U.S. Senator, presidential candidate Cory Booker visits Elmhurst

U. S. Senator Cory Booker, Democratic Candidate for President of the United States, came to visit Elmhurst last week to meet and greet friends he had known since his college days at Stanford University, where he graduated in 1991.

Cory Anthony Booker has been serving as the junior U.S. Senator from New Jersey since 2013. The first African-American U.S. Senator from New Jersey, he was previously the 36th Mayor of Newark from 2006 to 2013.

Booker’s visit was coordinated by Elmhurst residents and fellow Stanford grads Jill Hayes and Tom Lee, along with Jill Hennessy. It was held at Hayes home on the 200 block of E. Adams on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 17. The Independent caught up with Hennessy to hear about the gathering.

“I am currently president of the Stanford Club of Chicago and Cory Booker was part of the class of 1991, which Tom Lee is also a member,” Hennessy said in an exclusive interview. “Tom flew out to New Jersey for an unrelated event a while back and got together with Cory and other Stanford friends and decided to get involved in Booker’s campaign for president. Tom had supported him when he originally ran for U.S. Senate.”

Hennessy was impressed with Booker and found his message “refreshing.”

“I can’t say enough good things about him,” she said. “He’s really a

person who lives his message. His mission is to heal our country of its division, to reach across the aisle to work together to get things done.”

She said he also has good ideas on the issues.

“My son asked him a question about gun violence and Booker has a plan to combat gun violence,” Hennessy said. “He has real ideas on the issues. Booker also made the point that U.S. citizens need to play their part as well, that we must all be responsible, play our role and not to sit back. He noted that even small things you do have a ripple effect.”

Asked if he said anything about President Donald Trump, Hennessy said he did indeed.

“But he said it shouldn’t be our goal just to get [Trump] out of office, which is popular right now,” she said. “Booker said that is a shallow goal, that there’s much more to it than that. If that’s all we want is to get him out of office, then we’re not seeing the big picture.”

Overall, she said Booker was a positive person, a positive thinker, rather than negative. He seemed to strike a cord with the citizens gathered at the Hayes residence in Elmhurst.

“People really seemed to find the evening inspiring,” Hennessy said.

“People were moved by his message, some, almost to tears. But he’s very real and down to earth.

“You know, he was mayor of Newark, which is not the nicest city. In fact, he’s witnessed shootings, he ac-

York freshmen team supports Marshall

The York High School freshman football team gathered recently to celebrate its teammate/Team Manager, Marshall Bell, during a Monocles for Marshall postgame tailgate party at Doc’s Victory Pub. The freshmen Dukes team helped raise more than $4,000 for the Bell family, as Marshall bravely lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic disease that causes progressive muscle degeneration. The team surprised Marshall, (sitting center back row), and his family with the donation which will be used for much needed medical breathing equipment Marshall needs for the upcoming winter. The York community greatly surpassed the initial $2,000 fundraising goal set by a few parent organizers. Prior to the tailgate, the freshmen Dukes enjoyed a 19-6 victory over Oak Park River Forest High School.

Epiphany Lutheran takes mission trip to Savannah

tually saw a young boy get shot and die right in front of him, so he knows the rough side of things and doesn’t separate himself from the issues, the ‘dark side.’ He still lives in Newark, so he’s still in the midst of it.”

She said Booker has a documentary called “Street Fight,” available on Amazon Prime that talks about his first run for mayor of Newark, when he was up against a corrupt

mayor – and lost the first time.

“It’s a good way to get to know Booker for those who may be unfamiliar,” Hennessy said.

Beyond that, it’s always fun and interesting when someone from the national political stage comes to visit Elmhurst.

“I’d urge people to listen to his message,” she concluded. “We can get more done if we all get along and work together.”

Elmhurst Police Department receives Halloween traffic grant The Elmhurst Police Department was once again awarded a year-long traffic enforcement grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The goal of this grant is to save lives by reducing fatal and serious injury crashes through additional enforcement of DUI, seatbelt, and other traffic laws.

This grant allows extra officers

to be on patrol looking for impaired drivers, distracted drivers, and seatbelt violations. The majority of extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, which is statistically the most dangerous time to be on the roads. The first campaign of this grant will coincide with Halloween.

From Oct. 19-Nov. 3, extra officers will be on patrol to enforce impaired

driving, seatbelt violations, and distracted driving laws.

Motorists who are planning on drinking should make alternate driving arrangements. In addition, citizens are encouraged to report any vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver by calling 9-1-1. As always, motorists are encouraged to drive safely and to buckle up.

The first-ever “Art in Bloom” display will be a central feature at this year’s Spotlight Gala, benefiting Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA) to be held Saturday, Nov. 9 from 7-11 p.m. at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

“We are thrilled to add a unique flair to this wonderful evening,” said Don Phillips, one of the owners of Phillip’s Flowers and Gifts, which is sponsoring the display.

Floral designers from Phillips are participating in a creative process in the weeks leading up to the Gala, interpreting selected paintings and sculptures from the Elmhurst Art Museum, and designing unique arrangements to showcase their talent and interpretation.

The arrangements will be on display around the museum at the Gala where attendees can view the pieces and vote on their favorite arrangement.

“This is an exciting invitation for our talented designers to showcase their individual talent, and to have fun with some friendly competition in the process,” Phillips added. “As a local business, we are grateful for the opportunity to be connected with the Elmhurst Art Museum and ECPA. This is a celebration of performing arts, with a

bow to the beauty of visual arts.”

In addition to the viewing of “Art in Bloom”, the gala event will showcase music and talent by local performing artists including Beyond Center Stage Jazz Dancers, York High School Jazz band and guitarists from Immaculate Conception Catholic Prep. Dance music and more.

“We have always loved being the venue for ECPA’s galas and look forward to seeing its future home expand on Elmhurst’s cultural offerings,” said John McKinnon, executive director of the Elmhurst Art Museum. “The Art in Bloom installation showcases the talents of local designers as well as collaborations across the arts and community organizations.”

The Gala benefits ECPA, a not-forprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to the creation of a state-of-the-art venue for theater, dance and comedy in the Elmhurst City Centre. Proceeds from the silent auction, live auction and wine and craft beer pull will benefit ECPA’s initiative.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Oct. 8 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting. Board president Kara Caforio noted at the beginning of the meeting that the board would not vote on anything during the evening. She described the meeting as a study session and stated the board would analyze data presented at the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Lincoln teachers receive ‘Shining Star’ awards The board presented its Shining Star awards to Shelley Rzewuski and Corie Fagan, who are both firstgrade teachers at Lincoln Elementary School. The board presents its Shining Star awards to staff members who make a positive impact on students and staff of the district.

Key performance indicators studied The majority of the meeting featured a presentation and discussion about key performance indicators within the district. Those indicators include graduation rates and average scores in standardized tests. Mariann Lemke, the district’s executive director of research and program analysis, provided the board with several statistics about district students. Lemke noted the district’s vision of having all of its students be college-, careerand life-ready when they graduate from high school. Lemke stated that about 84 percent of the students from York High School’s Class of 2018 enrolled in college within the first year after grading from high school.

That number is about five percent higher than the national average of 79 percent. According to the most recent figures, about 66 percent of York graduates graduate from college in six years or less; the national average is about 53 percent.

Lemke also presented SAT av-

erage scores for the district’s 11thgrade students in 2018 and 2019.

The students’ average score in the standardized test’s evidence-based reading and writing component was 571 in 2018 and 566 in 2019. District students’ average math score in the SAT was 583 in 2018 and 572 in 2019.

Lemke also provided figures of district students’ SAT averages by the race and ethnicity of students.

Other figures showed the average test scores of English Language Learner (ELL) students, students from low-income families and students with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). Lemke stated there were some significant gaps in some averages among students in and out of different groups. According to the most recent results, the SAT evidence-based reading and writing average (EBRW) score for ELL students was 373, while the average score among non-ELL students was 573. In math, the SAT average score for ELL students was 366, while the average for non-ELL students was 579. In the subgroups of students from low-income families and students with IEPs, the average SAT scores were also lower than the averages of students outside those groups. Among students with IEPs, the average EBRW average was 448; it was 579 for students outside of that group. The average SAT math score for students with IEPs was reportedly 420; the average for students outside of that group was 588. Among students from low-income families, the average EBRW score was 457; the average for students outside that group was 584. In math, the average for students from the low-income families was 447; it was 592 for those outside of that group.

Discussion of post-secondary experiences, AP, ACP classes Lemke provided additional figures, including the percentage of York seniors who had at least one post-secondary experience in high school. Examples for post-secondary experiences include Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Advance College

Project (ACP) courses, dual-credit courses and courses with industry certification. Nearly 85 percent of the members of York’s Class of 2019 completed at least one post-secondary course while in high school.

According to figures provided in Lemke’s presentation, the four-year high school graduation rate of district students has been about 95 percent in each of the last three school years.

Third graders reading at or above their level Another statistic mentioned during the presentation provided information about the number of district third-graders who were reading on their grade level. According to the statistic provided by the district, 79 percent of the district’s 2018-19 third-graders met or exceeded their reading level.

Presentation discussed Commenting on the presentation, board member Christopher stated that he saw flat progress, and flat was not good enough. Board member Jim Collins said he would like to see district trends over a longer term instead. He added that he would like to see how the district’s key performance indicators compare to the best public districts in the state.

Nikki Tammaru, the district’s assistant superintendent of learning and leadership development, said the district is focusing on providing personalized and rigorous instruction for all students. When board member Karen Stuefen asked a question about homework, Tammaru responded that she has worked in school districts in Aurora and Glendale Heights. Tammaru said District 205 is the most affluent district she has worked in during her career. Tammaru said some students may not have the support at home to do homework. She added that what will impact them is teachers using high-level strategies and maximizing every minute they have with each student.

The board held its second meeting of October earlier this week on Oct. 22.

Promoter sues DGTT over canceled Toby Keith concert

Cite breach of contract, intentional misrepresentation

The Independent has learned that the promoter of the canceled Freedom & Dignity Music Festival scheduled in Schaumburg on Saturday, Aug. 10 is in the process of suing the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation (DGTT), the designated beneficiary of the concert, claiming a breach of contract and intentional misrepresentation. The concert was to be headlined by country music star Toby Keith.

According to the foundation, Imagn Events had requested a payment of more than $400,000 at the last minute to stage the festival. The DGTT said it could not and therefore, would not make the payment.

The action reportedly seeks more than $100,000 in damages and court costs.

“Statements made by the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation to the contrary, explicit or implicit, are false,” a written statement by Imagn Events read.

The process of refunding ticket prices to the public has reportedly begun, according to Imagn Events.

The foundation indicated it cancelled the Music Festival on the Wednesday before it was scheduled, after recognizing that Imagn would be unable to stage the event as originally planned. The fest was created to raise funds for Cafe Liberty, the DGTT’s culinary training program for veterans and their families.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage to property Oct. 12-Oct. 13 A custodian from the Elmhurst Public Library directed an officer to a damaged sign at the entrance to the library located on Cottage Hill Ave. The “Elmhurst Public Library” sign weighs several hundred pounds and appears to have been knocked over intentionally sometime between the above dates.

Oct. 12 A park district employee told police at around 8:46 p.m. that the sink in the women’s bathroom at Berens Park on the 400 block of Oaklawn had been broken off of the wall. A neighbor’s video surveillance shows a group of teens entering and exiting the men’s and women’s bathrooms.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct Oct. 16 India Bunch, 39, of Hillside, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/breaching the peace in the 900 block of S. York at around 6:39 p.m. Police said Bunch confronted a victim at his place of work on his lunch break because she thought her Ray-Ban prescription glasses were in his car. Bunch allegedly kicked the rear bumper of the victim’s vehicle but did not cause any damage.

A 31-year-old Lombard woman was charged with domestic battery in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 6:20 p.m. According to police, a victim said he located his wife in their vehicle parked at the above location with an unknown male. The victim got out and approached the suspect when the suspect attempted to drive away, allegedly striking the victim in the arm.

Cassandra Huffman, 49, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for disorderly conduct/public intoxication, pedestrian under the influence and possession of alcohol in public near North and West at around 1:18 a.m. Police said Huffman was found walking in the roadway, intoxicated, yelling profanities and unable to care for herself.

Oct. 14 Police said officers responded to an area near West and Utley for the report of a man with a gun at around 3:19 p.m. A search of the suspect’s vehicle yielded an air soft replica M1911 handgun and .22 grams of cannabis. Suspects were detained and transported to the police station for questioning. One of the suspects admitted to possessing the air soft gun and shooting it at another vehicle, police said. The suspect was issued citations for disorderly conduct, possession of an air rifle by a minor and possession of cannabis.

Oct. 12 An 18-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 700 block of N. Kenilworth at around 4 p.m. Police said the victim had visible red marks.

Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital at around 1:20 a.m. for a report of an intoxicated patient threatening hospital staff. The suspect told police he did not mean what he said

and had no intention of harming the staff. The complainant did not wish to pursue charges. The suspect was issued a no trespass notice and was released from the hospital’s care.

Vaszuez, 24, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage, illegal transportation of alcohol and failure to signal when required subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 3:30 a.m.

Oct. 11 Neil Eidel, 58, of Phoenix, Ariz., was charged with DUI, failure to signal when required, improper turn and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 11:51 p.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance Oct. 16 A juvenile suspect was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia at York High School at around 1:46 p.m. Police said the suspect was found to be using a vape device in the bathroom, and was taken to the dean’s office, where his vaping device containing THC oil fell out of his pocket.

Oct. 14 Alicia J. McGee, 22, of Melrose Park, was charged two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, no insurance and improper lighting subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Indiana at around 11:41 p.m. Police said McGee was found to be in possession of cocaine.

Suspicious circumstances Oct. 11 A complainant in the 600 block of S. Fairfield told police at around 3:39 p.m. that his Ring doorbell alerted him of an unknown subject on his front porch. The video surveillance shows the suspect opening the screen door and entering an enclosed area of the home that contained only shoes. The subject did not attempt to open the home’s front door and the video did not show the suspect leave the residence. The complainant told police that noting appears to be missing from the residence. The suspect was described as a white male around 5-9, 165 pounds, with medium length hair wearing a dark long-sleeved half-

Theft/burglary/ attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery Oct. 16 Isaac Underwood, 27, of Chicago, was charged with theft near a pharmacy in the 200 block of N. York at around 12:03 a.m.

Oct. 15 Rosanna J. Ruffolo, 37, of Elmwood Park, was attempted retail theft, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a hypodermic needle at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 11:19 a.m. Police said the suspect attempted to steal liquor from the store and was found to be in possession of a hypodermic needle and cocaine.

A victim in the 400 block of N. York told police at around 7:12 p.m. that he thought he won a contest and provided his credit card information over the phone to an unknown suspect. When the victim realized this was fraudulent, he called the police. The officer advised the victim to cancel his credit card; no loss has been recorded at this time.

Oct. 14-Oct. 15 Theft was reported in the 800 block of N. Larch. A victim told police she received two emails on her work account from an unknown suspect who purported to be the owner of the company. The email directed the victim to purchase eBay gift cards and supply information to the suspect via email. The victim complied with the request. As of the above dates, the victim has sent the suspect $2,000 worth of gift cards.

Oct. 13 Police said a victim arrived at a car wash in the 900 block of N. York at around 5:22 p.m. and was approached by two suspects who offered to fix scratches on the rear bumper of his vehicle for $200. The victim declined the offer. After driving through the car wash, the suspects approached the victim again. They walked around his vehicle and pointed out a scratch on the passenger door. The victim believes the suspects intentionally caused this damage. They sprayed an unknown substance on the victim’s vehicle and requested $200. The victim refused to pay and called 9-1-1. The suspects left the scene. An officer observed a 10-inch long scratch on the passenger door. There were no signs of damage from the product that was sprayed. One suspect was described as an Hispanic male in his 30s, 5-7, 150 pounds with short black hair, bad acne and wearing a green hoodie and cargo pants. The second suspect was described as an Hispanic male around 35 years old, 6-foot tall and 220 pounds with short black hair and wearing a blue hoodie and cargo pants. In a related incident, police said that while a victim was driving south on York near Diversey at around 5:47 p.m., the victim was waved down by two suspects and the victim and suspects pulled over. One of the suspects stated he worked for a car dealership in Westmont and he could remove the existing scratches from the victim’s vehicle. The other suspect began rubbing an unknown substance on the victim’s vehicle and stated the victim owed them $1,500. The victim got into his vehicle, drove away and called 9-1-1. A reporting officer observed a white filmy substance all along the vehicle. It is unknown if the substance will leave permanent damage. One suspect was described as an Hispanic male between 30 and 40 years old

with a thin build, facial hair and wearing a green jacket. The second suspect was described as an Hispanic male between 30 and 40 years old, heavy set, with facial hair and wearing a longsleeve gray shirt and a dark blue shirt.

Oct. 11-Oct. 12 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 400 block of W. St. Charles. Police said an unknown suspect used an unknown type of saw to remove the catalytic converter on a victim’s vehicle sometime between the above dates.

Aug. 31-Oct. 12 Theft by deception was reported in the 700 block of W. Alexander between the above dates.

A victim told police that she was in an online relationship with an unknown suspect. During the course of the online communications, the victim sent the suspect currency and nude images of herself. When the victim refused to send additional funds to the suspect, he attempted to extort the victim by threatening to publicize the images.

Oct. 2-Oct. 11 Theft was reported at a business in the 100 block of N. York. A complainant told police that a former employee failed to return company property after terminating her employment between the above dates. The reporting officer contacted the suspect, who stated she previously disposed of the property in anger. Charges are pending.

Oct. 10 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of W. Park at around 5:39 p.m. A reporting officer spoke to the victim, who stated that an unknown suspect entered her unlocked vehicle and removed her property. The case is pending investigation.

Aug. 31-Oct. 10 Forgery was reported at a car dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake between the above dates.

The dealership was alerted by US Bank of possible fraudulent activity with a refund check they had issued. The check amount, date and the original “pay to the order of” had been altered. And investigation is pending.

April 25-Oct. 10 A vehicle was reported stolen from a rent a car company in the 800 block of N. York. A complainant stated that the suspect had rented a vehicle that has not been returned to the branch.

The complainant has made multiple attempts to retrieve the vehicle between the above dates with no results.

Oct. 9 Ionut Valentin Batausu, 38, of Chicago, was charged with felony possession of an unlawful fictitious identification card at a gas station in the 500 block of S. York at around 7:45 p.m. Police said that upon arrival, Batausu provided officers with a false name, was in possession of several Visa gift cards, and cash. A second unnamed suspect was in possession of alcohol and a stun gun, according to police. Further investigation is pending.

Warrant arrest

Oct. 16 Police said Eric W. Eichinger, 38, of Elmhurst, had a warrant out of DuPage County in the 200 block of Illinois at around 4:29 p.m.

Oct. 13 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Industrial and Grand at around 12:45 a.m., Alexis Olea, 24, of Bensenville, was found to have a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Olea also was issued citations for no valid driver’s license, no insurance and speeding.

Prescription Drug Takeback Day The Elmhurst Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration for the Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Officers will be on hand in the west parking lot of the police station to collect expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs for safe destruction, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse. The non-medical use of prescription drugs is one of the most common forms of drug abuse in America. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from the home medicine cabinets of family and friends. Unused drugs that are flushed into toilets or thrown into the garbage are also environmental hazards, as they contaminate the water supply.

During the April 2014 collection, 461 pounds of medications was turned in for destruction in Elmhurst alone. Since the event was first held in 2010, more than 4.1 million pounds of medications have been removed from circulation nationwide.

Fun and fundraising par for the course at Epiphany Golf Outing More than 40 golfers and guests helped raise funds recently at the annual Golf Outing of Epiphany Lutheran Church’s Men in Mission group.

The Elmhurst church organization uses funds raised to benefit needy individuals and families, as well as other charitable groups and programs.

Park Board to obtain additional assessments at site of potential sports facility At the Park Board meeting held Monday, Oct. 14, the Board approved a contract with V3 Companies Ltd. to perform additional assessments at 837 S. Riverside Drive at the intersection of Route 83 and Riverside Drive. Also known as the Kieft Brothers property, the site is 16.4 acres divisible over two adjacent lots and is the planned location of a potential indoor sports facility.

The Board approved the referendum contingent-based purchase of the property on Monday, Sept. 23. Prior to that date, the seller of the property completed a Phase I environmental site assessment of the property, which indicated the need for additional assessment.

The contract with V3 will include completion of a Phase II environmental assessment and an earthwork analysis. The company has extensive experience in this type of work and has worked with the District on past projects, including storm water analysis. V3 will complete their work and present findings to the Park Board in advance of the end of the due diligence period for the property, which is Monday, Dec. 30.

“Imagn Events required a loan from us for $248,750, documented by a written note that was due to be paid back by Aug. 1, 2019,” the foundation said in a written statement.

“They defaulted on the note.”

The foundation described the loan as an initial payment to secure performers for the festival. It had also arranged for the sponsorship of two suites for $65,000, and those funds went to Imagn Events right away to further cover other expenses.

“On a conference call five days before the event, Imagn told us we needed to give them another $406,250 in order to move forward with the event or the event would have to be canceled,” DGTT executive director Dan Gibbons told the Independent. “This was not part of our original contract, nor was the foundation in a financial position to agree to their ultimatum of $406,250.”

The Foundation Board looked at the numbers provided by the promoter, determined Imagn Events would not be able to stage the concert as expected and terminated their agreement effective Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The Schaumburg Boomers joined the DGTT in trying to save the festival, but determined it was not financially feasible.

“At present, the foundation’s financial outlay and potential losses are in excess of $340,000,” Gibbons reported following the cancelled event.

The lawsuit states that in November, an oral agreement between the two parties cited that the foundation would cover all event costs through ticket sales and its corporate account.

Imagn would serve only as promoter. The suit says that the written contract didn’t cover the handling of ticket sales and ultimate financial responsibility for the event.

Imagn informed the foundation of numerous down payment deadlines to vendors and other parties throughout July, but the foundation claimed it lacked the funds, according to the suit.

The lawsuit also claims the foundation posted personal information and the cell phone number of an Imagn owner and employee online, leading to harassment and threats.

Gibbons was unable to comment further on the lawsuit.

I buy him treats because I can. My teenager who now looks down on me by about eight inches. My teenager who thinks he doesn’t need his mom anymore, and he’s probably mostly correct. Sigh.

So I surprise him with treats. Small things I know he likes.

I leave them in places where he will find them – on the front seat of the car, on the kitchen table, on the table beside his bed. For the most part, he is thankful; although sometimes he tells me he doesn’t eat junk food before a football game. Sometimes I think he takes my efforts for granted.

That’s okay. Sometimes it’s okay to take your mom for granted – especially when you are a teenager.

Still I enjoy providing little happy surprises whenever I can.

It’s a small gesture. But I’ve learned that small things can become big, or at least large enough to make a difference.

Sometimes, in life, it’s the little things. Heck, most of the time it’s the little things.

Big things happen, sure. But it’s not every day you get married, or give birth, or buy your first house, or get a new puppy or have all the socks match on laundry day. If we waited for big things like this to make us happy, most of us would spend most of our time waiting. And waiting is no way to spend a life – unless your driver’s license is up for renewal.

Hence the importance of the little things: finding a penny, petting your cat, sleeping in on a Saturday, popcorn and a movie, freshly washed sheets, a comfy sweatshirt, your favorite pair of jeans, a new Netflix show to binge watch, the first potato chip from a newly opened bag, planting a garden in the spring, harvesting in the fall, a smile from your spouse, a freshly brewed cup of coffee and chocolate.

Although some would argue that chocolate is not a little thing. That aside, I think we can agree: little things are pretty easy to find.

And here’s the really good part: we are all capable of little things. For the most part, they are simple and take hardly any time or effort.

Like holding the door for someone.

Or giving a compliment. Or a smile. Saying good morning. Even saying a person’s name can bring on positive feelings because you are acknowledging them as an individual.

And you know what? Kind gestures bring about a boomerang effect. We send them out and they come back at us, often twice as strong and twice as powerful.

There have been times when I’ve felt compelled to do something nice for a stranger. A little thing.

Sometimes I hold back, thinking I shouldn’t interfere or get in the way. But there are those times when I let my gut speak and I act on my convictions.

And, even though my actions constitute something very small in the big scheme of things, when I get a positive reaction my heart gushes.

Doing something nice brings nice back to you. Boomerang.

So there’s my confession. I give my son treats, because I can, but that’s not the total answer. Not if I am being honest. Of course I like making him happy. But that’s not why I do it. I do it because it makes me happy to make him happy. It’s the logic of the human condition. We want the people we love to thrive and be happy – to feel wanted and needed and loved. And in doing this, we are doing the same for ourselves.

How’s that for a piece of good news for the day?

Old Elmhurst: Personal recollections of a native: Part 15 A history provided by Dr. Frederick H. Bates (Editor’s note: This is the final installment in Dr. Bates’ story about Old Elmhurst.)

Under the impelling influence of Henry L. Glos’s personality, coupled with his indefatigable efforts, the wheels of local government began to turn rapidly. Associated with him on the board of village trustees, of which he was president, were some of the best and most reliable men in town. During these years of transition, Judge Geo. Sawin was the first city attorney, and upon him evolved the duty of formulating the ordinances governing the newly created village, and William H. Litchfield was the first village magistrate who administered them without fear or favor.

Dr. George F. Heidemann served as village treasurer for more than 20 years. In fact, the village so long dormant began to take on a busy air. Plank sidewalks, four feet wide, were built on the principal streets; a street lighting system installed; the two main streets (York and Cottage Hill avenue) were macadamized; the present city hall built; sewers laid and buildings, long unsightly, were moved away or torn down; many new streets, long needed were opened, others made wider, some straightened, and crossings built at intersections.

Private companies, encouraged by liberal ordinances, built water mains and organized an electric lighting system. The village grew very rapidly and in ten years more (1890) had a population of 1390. We now have more than 4600.

Early in the last decade of the nineteenth century, Mr. Glos, who had been President of the Village Board since the first organization, with the single exception of one year, of which Peter A. Wolf served in that capacity, thought the time auspicious for an increase of the saloon license to $1,000, (the State law provided only for a minimum rate, which could be increased at any time by the governing body). Men who could be depended on were selected to fill the places vacated the following spring. These were elected without difficulty and the

new board assembled for action. It was customary to fix and grant licenses at the first meeting of the new board, hence, after the members had taken their seats, been properly sworn in, and the president had announced the various committees, the recommendation was made for the increase, an ordinance presented and rushed through with a majority of one vote. (My vote was the deciding one). The amount of the saloon license, decided on that memorable night, remained unchanged until the national prohibition went into effect last year.

The full significance of this action and its far-reaching effect may not be fully understood today without explanation. Up to this time even the most sanguine workers for good government had despaired of so sweeping a victory. Any effort to curtail the saloon influence was met with derision. The reputation of the village as a “saloon town” worked greatly to its disadvantage by keeping out desirable citizens. I recall an instance, which will serve to indicate the existing condition as one of extreme intolerance. An enthusiastic young man from Wheaton came down to Elmhurst one hot summer night in 1880 to give a temperance lecture at the school house. He had just commenced speaking and was well along in his introductory remarks, when a young fellow beastily intoxicated in the audience, who used to go to school with the speaker, deliberately got up from his seat and stumbling forward, with outstretched hand, said: “Hello Bill! come out and have a drink.”

The young teacher was so disconcerted that he could not proceed, and the meeting broke up. It transpired afterward that this unfortunately dupe of the saloon men had been sent to the school house to prevent the address.

To go into detail regarding the many improvements that followed up to the close of the nineteenth century, is not within the intention of these series, which are supposed to deal only with “Old Elmhurst.” It has been a privilege to relate these stories of the past, and I thank those who have followed me so patiently to THE END.

York introduces one of this year’s Dukes of Distinction Joel Herter, class of 1955, among honorees

The York Distinguished Alumni Program (YDAP) serves to recognize and honor alumni who have distinguished themselves through significant and/or extraordinary accomplishments, service and/or an outstanding contribution to society.

This year, six Dukes of Distinction have been chosen by a panel of York alumni judges and will be honored on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 2, beginning with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the York High School Commons. The program is free and open to the public.

This week, the Independent joins York High School and District 205 in a salute to Joel Herter from the Class of 1955.

Joel Herter firmly believes his four years at York High School prepared him to succeed in college and to be life ready. After college and his military service, he passed the CPA examination and began an accounting career. In 1978, Joel acquired a small CPA firm in Elmhurst. Over the years, the firm blossomed, and he grew the business into the largest independent CPA firm in DuPage County. In 2014, Joel sold his firm to a large, national CPA conglomerate and retired.

a mark county-wide. During his career, Joel was privileged to sit on three local boards, including his alma mater, Elmhurst College. As Board Chairman of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, the new hospital was built for $450 million and while leading the DuPage Water Commission, the DuPage System, a $500 million project, was built bringing Lake Michigan water to DuPage County, the largest public water project of its kind at the time. With each of these defining projects, Joel is most proud of his fiscal responsibility as a steward of the community’s trust. Both endeavors were com-

pleted on time and under budget.

He also served as a trustee at Elmhurst College for 41 years (1977-2018) and as ChairJoel Herter man of the in 1955 Board for four years (1997-2002). In his honor, the nursing scholarship was renamed the “Joel Herter Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare Nursing Scholarship” (2001). On January 8, 2019, he was elected Trustee Emeritus. He also received the college’s prestigious Alumni Merit Award in 1978, Founders Medal in 2002, and was inducted into the Bluejay Backer Hall of Fame in 1980.

Herter was a member of the basketball team at York High School and went on to become the Captain of the basketball team at Elmhurst College. He is still an avid Bluejay athletics fan.

Joel holds fond memories of York and proudly notes that his family upholds the legacy of being Duke graduates. Moreover, his commitment, work and actions have shaped and changed the Elmhurst community.

The Childhood Cancer Research Fund receives most of its funding

from voluntary charitable contributions donated by Illinoisans who check the applicable box on their state income tax return.

Mazzochi joins 10 other members on the board, including the Director of the IDPH, qualified medical professionals with expertise in pediatric cancer, and bipartisan colleagues in the General Assembly.

Man found guilty of aggravated DUI in deadly crash DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Onecimo Vazquez-Velazquez, 31, of Westmont, has been found guilty of Aggravated DUI Causing Death and Reckless Homicide involving a 2018 crash that claimed the life of his passenger, Annajeanne Dewey. Judge Liam Brennan rendered his verdict following a three-day bench trial. In all, Judge Brennan found Vazquez-Velazquez guilty of one count of Aggravated DUI Causing Death (Class 2 Felony) and two counts of Reckless Homicide (Class 3 Felony.)

On Oct. 7, 2018, at approximately 1 a.m., Vazquez-Velazquez was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Fairview Avenue near the intersection of 55th Street in Downers Grove.

As Vazquez-Velazquez attempted to pass a car by entering the oncoming lane of traffic, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, splitting the vehicle in half and killing Dewey. VazquezVelazquez was interviewed by officers who observed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath as well as glassy and bloodshot eyes. Vazquez-

Velazquez’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was .077 approximately one and one-half hours after the crash. Vazquez-Velazquez was taken into custody and appeared at a bond hearing on Oct. 11, 2018 where Judge Brennan set bond at $500,000 with 10% to apply. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

“Just over one year ago, Annajeanne Dewey was killed in a crash so horrific it split the vehicle in which she was a passenger in half,” Berlin said. “An investigation into the crash revealed that the driver of that vehicle, Onecimo Vazquez-Velazquez had been drinking before getting behind the wheel. Sadly, because of the irresponsible and reckless actions of Mr. Vazquez-Velazquez, Annajeanne’s life was taken from her as she took her place as a statistic of drunk driving. I offer my sincerest condolences to Annajeanne’s family and friends on their tremendous loss.”

Vazquez-Velazquez’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 20 for return of the Pre-sentence Report.

Visitation holds dunk tank fundraiser

On Oct. 4, Visitation students took part in the Viking Glow Run, which was a week-long fundraiser to help raise money for the school. If students reached the school goal of $15,000, assistant principal Ms. McVey and the athletic director/PE teacher Ms. Roberts would spend the day in a dunk tank allowing each student a chance to dunk them. Visitation exceeded its goal and the kids had a blast trying to dunk their assistant principal and PE teacher. IC Catholic Prep football team loses to St. Francis Knights have 33-game winning streak snapped

The streak is over.

The IC Catholic Prep football team had its 33-game winning streak snapped after a 20-19 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division loss to Wheaton St. Francis in a game played at Wheaton College.

IC Catholic Prep dropped to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in MSC Blue play.

St. Francis moved to that same 7-1 record, but now is 5-0 in Blue Division action. IC Catholic Prep must win at Riverside-Brookfield Friday and have St. Francis lose at home to 1-7 Aurora Central Catholic in order to gain a share of the MSC Blue title.

IC Catholic Prep had won the last four conference titles and had a 26game conference winning streak snapped by St. Francis.

The Knights led 19-7 at one juncture of the contest. IC Catholic Prep led 7-0 after the first quarter and 13-7 at halftime. The Knights held a 19-13 edge after three quarters.

Danny Cronin completed 11 of 19 passes for 129 yards. The Knights got it done once again on the ground, racking up 292 rushing yards on 32 carries (9.1 yards per carry).

Junior Kyle Franklin ran 18 times

for 214 yards and scored two touchdowns. He averaged 11.9 yards per carry and had a long run of 78 yards.

Cronin ran 14 times for 78 yards (5.6 yards per carry) and had a long run of 27 yards. Franklin’s 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put IC Catholic Prep up 19-7.

Chauncey Lee caught six passes for 69 yards and had a long reception of 34 yards. Junior Anthony Parille had six catches for 37 yards and caught a 31-yard pass. Rashad Sbeih had five catches for 20 yards.

Kevin Cooke stood out on defense for the Knights. He had 25 tackles and four tackles for loss. Cooke had almost half of the team’s 55 tackles.

Jaydon Mims had five tackles, while Antonio Richardson had four tackles. Kevin Akins, Jaydon Mims and Alonzo Howard each had a tackle for loss. Richardson, Akins and Howard each had a quarterback sack. Richardson had two quarterback hurries.

Richardson, Cronin and Cooke each had an interception. Richardson returned his 56 yards. Lee had three pass deflections, while Cronin had one and Howard had two. Tommy Ryan had a fumble recovery, while Richardson, a sophomore, and Akins each caused a fumble.

IC Catholic Prep closes out the regular season Friday at R-B and will then find out its first playoff foe Saturday night. The Knights are likely to host a first-round playoff contest as they begin defense of their three state titles in a row.

The Bulldogs’ wins have come against Morton (0-8), Wauconda (2-5 after 7 weeks), Aurora Christian (4-4), Aurora Central Catholic (1-7), Ridgewood (2-5 after 7 weeks) and Wheaton Academy (4-4). IC Catholic Prep’s Kyle Franklin has run for 898 yards on 98 carries and has scored 17 touchdowns. Quarterback Danny Cronin has passed for 1,106 yards and 12 touchdowns and run for 575 yards and 4 touchdowns.

York boys cross country team wins WSC Silver title Dukes compete in Indiana at Nike event; Raise funds for homeless running club

The York boys cross country team thoroughly enjoyed some recent home cooking.

The Dukes won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title at Berens Park in Elmhurst. York finished with 40 points, 24 better then second-place Downers Grove North and 25 points better than third-place Lyons Township.

York senior Daniel Klysh won the WSC Silver individual title in 14:40.83.

He was ahead of second-place Jack Ehlert of Lyons Township, who ran 14:50.89.

Senior Michael Moriarty was seventh in 15:03.49, while senior Ethan Kern was ninth at 15:08.51 and junior

Colin Hill checked in at 15:09.53 and finished 10th. Senior Will Yasdick was 13th at 15:13.27 and senior Max Lupo was 20th at 15:38.13.

York runs in the Class 3A Glenbard West Saturday.

Earlier, York ran in the Nike Twilight meet in Terre Haute, Indiana.

York coach Charlie Kern pointed out this was the first time York has competed outside the state during the high school season.

“The goal was to have one more opportunity to run on the 5K course before the NXR meet in November,” said Kern, in his usual update to alumni, referring to the meet York runners will compete in as the Kroy club team.

The meet also was the first time the top seven included Kern, who had been recovering from a leg injury.

York won the race with 78 points.

Klysh finished fourth at 15:38.2 for 5,000 meters. Hill was 10th at 15:48.2 and Moriarty was 15th at 15:55. Sam Ayers was 18th at

15:58.9. Kern was 36th at 16:12.5.

Kern noted York had six runners within two seconds of each other at the mile marker (4:51-4:52) and Jackson Geiger was at 5:00. At the two-mile mark York had four runners within three seconds (Klysh, Hill, Moriarty and Ayers).

“At the Peoria Notre Dame meet we were able to stay together for 1.5 miles and (at Nike) it was about 2.25 miles,” Kern said. “Overall we had a 1-5 split of 34 seconds with Ethan as our No. 5. He will quickly close that gap in the next few weeks and make our team that much stronger.”

While York sent its top 10 runners to Terre Haute, it dispatched its next seven to Peoria and the Peoria Central meet at Detweiler Park. Sam Rodgers ran 15:39 and finished 47th.

Johnny Brennan was 69th at 15:50.

“The race did not go as planned,” Kern said. “We had to deal with a great deal of adversity in this race.

Jeff Luka took eighth in 16:36, while Zack Fidrocki took 16th at 16:53. “Zack moved up very well in the last mile,” Kern said. Colin Lewandowski was 32nd at 17:13 and Emmet Doyle was 34th at 17:15.

York was fourth in the freshman race at Palatine. Aidan Hill took 10th. Lance McCann finished 28th, while Luke Lestina was 35th. Payton Bryk was 38th and Ethan Brown was 42nd. “Aidan and Lance ran together early,” said Kern. “Luke, Payton and Ethan ran as a pack for the entire race.

They are beginning to understand the importance of pack running.”

At Peoria Notre Dame, York was sixth on the varsity level. “This meet was stacked,” Kern said. “St. Charles East, Wheaton-Warrenville South, Sandburg and a top-five team from California were among the teams we had to race. I had been talking about this race since the summer. I knew teams would come to this invite ready to show their might. My goal was very different. The boys were instructed to be conservative at the mile (4:55) and run together as a group. This goal was achieved through 1.5 miles with four runners within three seconds. Fitness and race sharpness began to show. Although we were sixth, my faith was not shaken. We have seen these movies before. Teams looking like world beaters in September, but unable to sustain their effort through November. I asked the boys, ‘What happens to fruit that ripens early?’ We will be fine.”

Klysh was 15th at 14:54. Ayers was 42nd at 15:22 and shaved 36.5 seconds from his 2018 time there.

Hill was 50th at 15:29. Moriarty was 51st at 15:29 and shaved more than 25 seconds off his time. Lupo was 73rd at 15:47, while Brennan was 85th at 15:55 (about 12 seconds faster than last year) and Yasdick was 93rd at 16:00 (more than 26 seconds faster).

Pratt won the JV race in 15:42 and shaved 14.1 seconds from his 2018 time. Rodgers was seventh with a personal record of 16:06 while O’Leary was 12th at 16:14. Vreeland was 20th at 16:25 and Rosario was 23rd at 16:27 and cut 40 seconds from his 2018 Notre Dame time. Alex Birnbaum was 56th at 17:04 and Jack Fitzpatrick was 83rd at 17:32.

“Brian Pratt earned his way back into the varsity lineup with that performance,” Kern noted.

York won the JV team title by 19 points.

Away from the course, York recently raised funds for the Back on my Feet organization through a car wash and online donations. The cross country program has raised more than $3,000 to help support a running club for homeless people.

York’s Cartis and Nikoleit qualify for state girls tennis finals Dukes finish second in West Suburban Silver

The York girls tennis team got a double dose of great news recently.

The Dukes finished second as a team at the recent Class 2A Lyons Township sectional. York had 21 points behind powerhouse Hinsdale Central, which finished with 32 points.

York qualified singles players Melissa Cartis and Gianna Nikoleit for this week’s Class 2A state finals tournament.

Cartis finished second in the singles tournament at the sectional behind Hinsdale Central freshman Nicole Hu. Cartis opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Downers Grove South and then won 6-0, 6-0 against Glenbard East. Cartis won her semifinals match 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 against Hinsdale Central’s Prachi Shah (freshman) and then lost 6-1, 6-1 to Hu in the final.

Nikoleit was third in the singles tournament. She won 6-1, 6-1 against Riverside-Brookfield in the opener and then won 6-0, 6-1 against Lyons Township. Nikoleit lost 6-0, 6-1 to Hu in the semifinals and then defeated Shah by injury default in the third-place match.

Earlier, York made a bit of history when it took second in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division.

It was York’s best finish in the conference since 1984.

York took second in the tournament and then leapfrogged Glenbard West to finish second overall in the WSC Silver. York was a point behind Glenbard West heading into the tournament.

Morgan Burnham won the WSC Silver No. 3 singles title, becoming the first York girls player to win a

conference title since Kelly Barry did so in 2005.

“I am so proud of how our team has come together throughout the regular season and the way we finished in the conference tournament,” said York coach Tres Heimann. “This was a total team effort. So many of our players stepped up.”

York had conference medalists in six of the seven flights at the WSC Silver meet.

The Dukes finished with 30 points in the tournament. Hinsdale Central had 38. Hinsdale won the conference with 44 points. York had 34 and Glenbard West had 33.

Cartis took third at No. 1 singles and earned all-conference honors. She won 8-0 in her first match against Downers Grove North and lost to Hu 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Cartis won 6-2, 6-1 in the third-place match against Lyons Township.

Nikoleit was third at No. 2 singles and earned all-conference honors. She won 8-0 in her first match against Proviso West and then lost 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals to Glenbard West before rebounding to win 6-3, 6-2 against Lyons in the third-place match.

Burnham won the No. 3 singles title. Burnham received a bye into the second round and then won 6-7 (3), 6-3, (10-3) in the semifinals against Glenbard West and defeated Lyons Township 6-4, 6-3 in the title match.

In doubles, Aleksina Jovic and Keira Polach finished fourth at the No. 1 position. They were 8-0 winners against Downers Grove North and then lost 6-2, 0-6, 11-9 to Glenbard West in the semifinals and 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the third-place match against Lyons.

Cate and Elle Duhig took third at No. 2 doubles and were named all-conference.

Junior Cassandra Lee is headed to the Class 1A state finals single tournament after finishing second in the sectional.

Lee opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nazareth Academy and then won 6-0, 6-1 over Fenwick and 6-3, 6-0 over Chicago F.W. Parker in the semifinals. Lee lost 6-4, 6-3 to Chicago Latin School sophomore Lucy Mitchell in the championship match.

Mitchell was the No. 1 seed in the sectional, while Lee was No. 2.

This is Lee’s third appearance in the state finals. Lee has a pair of thirdplace state doubles finishes to her credit.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team records two victories Knights closing in on 20 wins

After a tough showing at the Chicago Latin School tournament, the IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team turned things around in a hurry.

The Knights recorded a pair of recent two-set wins over Timothy Christian and Elgin St. Edward to move to 19-9 overall on the season.

In a 25-19, 25-20 win over Timothy, Sophie Hurt had 22 assists, 10 digs and one ace. Claire Wagner had 13 kills and one block. Jess Sobon had 13 kills, nine digs and one ace. Kristen Brachmann had two kills and three blocks, while Bella Leslie had 11 digs, two assists and one ace.

“We had a pretty good week,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy Kerrigan. “We went 2-3 at the Latin tournament before that and we had hoped to do a little better there. This time of the year is tough with kids coming off homecoming week. It’s the same way for everybody. With us, 75 percent of the team is dealing with some sort of illness whether it’s the cold or the flu.

It happens every year, so it’s not a surprise.”

Kerrigan liked how her team responded in the wins against Timothy and St. Edward. “That was a good sign,” she said. “I feel like we are back on track.”

Ball control has been a key positive for the Knights lately. “Our ball control is a little better. That was part of the issue at the Latin tournament,” she said.

“Once you have that ball control, you can run your offense and run to all your options. When we are able to do that, we are hard to stop. Our passers and defensive specialists/liberos are doing a nice job.”

IC Catholic Prep continues to excel on the offensive end as well. “Our attackers are doing a good job of putting the ball away,” said Kerrigan. “Sophie Hurt is doing a good job with ball distribution and making sure we are opening up the defense on the other side of the court. We saw it against Timothy. They put up a good block and we stressed that we need to use all our options and create seams in the block where our hitters can get to.

We were pretty solid against Timothy.

We were getting a lot of balls back up, which helped us, and against Ed’s we were aggressive with our serving. That helped a lot. Sophie had five or six service aces. We had a couple big serving runs that helped.”

Kerrigan is seeing improvements throughout the court. “Our back row has been good,” she said. “I look at them as a singular unit that is doing their job well. Sophie is running the floor well and has a lot less on her shoulders. She’s doing a great hob.

Our attackers are doing their jobs. Jess and Claire are on the outside and are consistent. We have a very balanced attack. They tend to finish with the

same amount of kills. We don’t lack or gain when they rotate through. Both are doing well. Our middles have been strong. Kristen and Carly (Holden) are getting the ball and placing good shots.

They are being smart.”

IC Catholic Prep has matches this week with Aurora Central Catholic and St. Francis. The Knights host their Jean Field invitational this weekend.

“This last week always is a good barometer of what are our comfort level is going into the postseason,” Kerrigan said. “We want to play our best volleyball now in this last week leading up to the playoffs. It’s a critical week for us.

The girls are getting healthy at a good time and hopefully we will be 100 percent by the time the playoffs start.”

IC Catholic Prep is in the Class 2A Regina Dominican regional and will host a Class 2A sectional. The Knights, the No. 1 seed in their own sectional, open the playoffs in Wilmette on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. against either No. 8 Intrinsic Charter or No. 10 Chicago Academy.

“We are hoping to be playing on our home court in the sectional,” Kerrigan said.

In earlier action, the Knights were 25-21, 25-10 winners over Riverside-Brookfield. Hurt had 23 assists, two kills, six digs and one ace. Wagner had 12 kills, two blocks and three digs.

Sobon had nine kills and one dig.

Holden had five kills. Brachmann had two kills and five blocks, while Leslie had six digs and Maddi Benson added five digs.

Burnham becomes York’s first girls tennis conference champion in 14 years Sophomore helps Dukes to best team finish in 35 years

York sophomore girls tennis player Morgan Burnham had a hand in breaking a pair of program streaks.

Burnham recently won the No. 3 singles title at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division tournament.

Burnham became the York girls tennis team’s first conference singles champion since 2005. Her play helped the Dukes take second overall in the WSC Silver, the team’s highest conference finish since 1984.

“It was really fun,” said Burnham. “I was happy to do it for my team.”

Burnham noted herself and the other competitors had to deal with weather issues at the conference tournament.

“That day was a real struggle for everybody,” she said. “With the wind and the weather, it was something none of us had dealt with before.”

Burnham chalked up her title to steadying the personal ship. “A lot of it was because of my consistent play in my game,” she explained.

“Being consistent is something I have been working on all season. I am making sure I stay out of my head and have a good attitude going into every match.”

In her championship match, a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lyons Township, Burnham was pleased with her shot selection. “I hit a lot of good shots that went in and I did well with my mental game,” she said.

Burnham said the team’s strong showing at conference was a big deal for the seniors on the team. “This is really great for us,” she said.

“We’re all really excited and happy for the seniors. It means a lot to us that they finished in a good place in their last year.”

Burnham said this season has been fruitful not only on the court but off it as well. “We all are such good friends,” she said. “We’ve made good connections with everybody. Everybody is so positive.

We’re all friends inside and outside the team. It’s easy for us to play well because we feel comfortable. We’re a family. You know you are there for your teammates and they will be there for you. That’s really important.”

Burnham finished the season with a 23-6 record.

The IC Catholic Prep girls cross country team finished second at the recent Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division championship at Elmwood Park.

The Knights finished with 67 points.

Rosary won the conference title with 48 points.

IC Catholic Prep sophomore Carly Manchester took second with a time of 18:28.2 on the 3-mile layout. Rosary junior Lianna Surtz won the conference title going away in 17:05.5.

Sophomore Kennedy Calcagno was ninth at 19:19.4. Junior Frankie Chaidez took 10th at 19:20.2. Junior Alia Johnson was 19th at 20:17.7. Senior Mimi Ciepiela was 27th at 20:57.3.

In earlier action, IC Catholic Prep won its own Knight Invitational thanks to Manchester, Calcagno, Chaidez and Johnson finishing in the top 10.

Freshman Hayden James was 12th and freshman Liz Closterides was 17th.

Calcagno won the Westmont meet, while Manchester had two photo-finish wins at Harvest Christian Academy in Elgin and at Chicago Latin School. IC Catholic Prep was second as a team at Harvest.

At the Amboy Columbus Day invitational, Ciepiela made her cross country debut, helping the Knights to fourth-place team finish against some of the top Class 1A teams in Illinois.

Annie Guinan, a senior, ran in her first race of the season at Amboy after suffering a soccer injury that required surgery in April.

“The team is looking stronger and stronger each week as we approach the state series,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Dawn Calcagno. “I love the culture of our team right now. The girls are making improvements at every practice and are constantly cheering for each other along the way.”

“We thought the scores might be high as the golf course was a bit unusual for a sectional,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack. “The scores were high, and while that compressed things at the top of the leaderboard, the golf course got the better of us. We were all a little disappointed in our results. We could have played better, but the same holds true for everyone.”

Sujack said, overall, the 2019 season was a success. “The bus ride back from Freeport was upbeat,” he said. “We are very young and our dual meet results this year were solid. We advanced out of regionals, but didn’t step up at sectionals. These experiences will pay dividends down the road, especially for the freshmen. Our returning players are motivated to improve. They have some specific goals for next year. It should be fun to watch. Our varsity freshmen this year have much potential and showed enough flashes of excellence during the season that as they turn into young men it makes me think we could excel for the next three years. We have three other freshmen golfers who are nice young golfers with wonderful potential as they mature. All of these guys will be fun to coach. I’m already looking forward to next August.”

The York boys golf team topped off an exceptional season with an exceptional performance The Dukes finished fourth in the state at the recent Class 3A meet held at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington.

York finished 44 strokes over par, behind third-place New Trier (35 over), second-place Glenbrook North (33 over) and state-champion Lake Forest (25 over).

On the final day of competition, senior Josh LaBounty shot a two-under 70 and finished even for the tournament. Senior Matt Buckley shot 75 and finished 3-over par. Junior Connor Polomsky shot 81 and finished 19-over. Junior Joe Bonelli shot 83 and finished 25-over, while junior Sam Bartolone shot 85 and finished 25-over as well. Junior Zach Sutter shot 91 and finished 31-over.

LaBounty had three birdies. Buckley added two, as did Polomsky and Bonelli.

LaBounty tied for third in the state, among three golfers who shot even par during the 36-hole event. Buckley tied for sixth in the state at plus-2.

York sat in fifth place after the first day at 23 strokes over par. Buckley shot a 1-under 71 to lead the Dukes.

LaBounty shot 74, while Polomsky shot 82. Bartolone shot 84, as did Sutter. Bonelli finished with an 86.

LaBounty shot his round despite a double and triple bogey. He was aided by four birdies. Buckley had three birdies. Bartolone had three birdies, as did Bonelli.

This was York’s fourth trip to the state meet as a team and highest-ever finish. York last appeared in Bloomington in 2014 and 2015. York was eighth in both 2014 and 2015.

York qualified for the state meet after taking third at the Class 3A Glenbrook North sectional at Sportsman’s. York shot 296 as a team. New Trier won the sectional at 288 and Glenbrook North shot 292.

Salt Creek students observe White Cane Day Learn about life for the visually impaired

Salt Creek School District 48 students recently learned how the white cane is an essential tool that gives the blind and visually impaired person the ability to be independent.

The lesson was part of White Cane Day, a national commemoration that offers an opportunity to educate about blindness and to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by

blind persons.

All three schools in Salt Creek 48 house visually impaired students from the 92 member school districts in DuPage/West Cook County in the education cooperative SASED or School Association for Special Education DuPage County.

SASED teachers and visually impaired students explained to students

how to address a blind or visually impaired student and the purpose of the white cane. Students then played Goal Ball, a game, like soccer where players score a goal by getting the ball through the opponents net. But in Goalball, the players are often blind and/or blindfolded and bells are inside the ball to allow players to hear when the ball comes near.

Pritzker unveils five-year economic plan, touts ‘strong job growth’ CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity recently introduced a fiveyear economic plan, focusing on six industries that can boost the state’s economy and a variety of programs to build its workforce and encourage population growth.

It’s the first such plan since former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn released his in July 2014, when he declared, “Illinois is in the midst of a resurgence.”

“Over the past five years, the state has battled back from the worst financial crisis in seven decades to put the economy on a positive trajecto-

ry,” Quinn said in his 2014 plan.

Pritzker had similar sentiments in this year’s plan. He touted his first seven months in office and emphasized the passage of a $45 billion capital infrastructure plan, legalized recreational marijuana and sports gambling, and the passage of several pro-business reforms.

“For the first time in nearly two decades, we’ve seen simultaneous strong job growth in every region of the state,” Pritzker wrote in the plan’s executive summary. “Underlying my vision is the fundamental principle of equity. velopment has been elusive, instead I am committed to reinvigorating the most important foundational element of Illinois’ economy: our diverse and talented workforce.”

The report, which serves as a loose guiding document rather than binding public policy, also listed challenges to overcome, including outmigration.

“Illinois has experienced a mild outbound migration of approximately 0.3 percent on average for the past five years,” according to the report.

“This trend is driven particularly by migration among young people, minorities, and rural populations.”

Pritzker emphasized reforming government to “provide world-class customer service,” and “aggressively marketing” the state to its young people and those thinking of moving here.

The governor’s plan looks at government as an entity that can facilitate business growth through “regional economic hubs,” in which “all the key economic actors in regions across Illinois, including state and local governments, industry, unions, universities, and nonprofits are communicating well and working together to accomplish the same economic vision.”

The plan calls for creation of an online platform “that allows Illinois-based small businesses and startups to easily access resources, content, and connections to build and grow their businesses from anywhere at any time.”

It also calls for “updating and broadening” incentive programs for businesses and collaboration between industry and community colleges to develop apprenticeships and training programs, and the development of a “Governor’s Champions” program to acknowledge employers making workforce commitments.

It will also be necessary to revitalize downstate communities and increase investment in communities of color, according to the plan.

Pritzker’s plan calls for a 50 percent funding increase for Monetary Award Program grants from 2019 levels by fiscal year 2023. Those grants go to college students that have a financial need and help them attend college in Illinois.

The report added: “New business creation in communities of color and a downstate revitalization effort undertaken since the beginning of 2019 are intended to reverse outmigration in communities that have historically suffered disinvestment.”

Other challenges noted in the plan include income inequality along the lines of race and sex, unresponsive bureaucracy, lagging commercialization of research and development, and indistinct industry strength.

It also mentions a “history of fiscal imbalances,” calling attention to a 736-day budget impasse under former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and claiming the budget passed this year was the first such effort that was “bipartisan and balanced” in years.

“The fiscal condition of the state has affected the ability of government to operate efficiently and the ability of businesses to invest confidently. It has also driven many costs down to the local government level, where property taxes are now high relative to other states,” according to the document.
