Pedal Power returns Nov. 2 Local siblings do their part to collect bicycles

Via Pedal Power, the bicycles will be donated to students in low-income areas of Chicago as an incentive to make the honor roll.

Last year, Grant and Lauren collected more than 100 bikes in El-

mhurst and 320 all combined with those gathered by students involved with Pedal Power in other communities.

In 2017, Lauren and Grant collected 154 bikes at the Elmhurst location and the group in total collected more than 500.

Lauren and Grant urge residents to repurpose their old bicycles instead

of disposing of them into a landfill.

Bring it to Stemples on the morning of Nov. 2, where bikes will be repaired or refurbished as needed.

They will then be transported into Chicago, which is all coordinated by the Pedal Power group.

• Traffic signage request along Niagra approved At the City Council meeting held on Monday, Oct. 7, one of the agenda items was a request for traffic signage at the intersections of Niagra/ Hillcrest and Niagra/Stratford. Third Ward Alderman Dannee Polomsky spoke to the issue when it was pulled from the consent agenda by Third Ward Alderman Michael Bram for further discussion.

“This is a traffic request from residents who approached staff about having no signage, no stop sign or yield sign at these intersections,” Polomsky said. “A traffic study recommended that yield signs be placed at the adjacent intersections, based on sight lines.”

Alderman Bram reported that he had driven by both locations to see for himself and determined the sight

lines were adequate.

“I believe there is a clear line of sight of 75 to 90 feet,” he said.

“Granted, there were two accidents this year and I don’t want to make light of that, but prior to that, there have not been accidents occurring there on any regular basis.”

He noted that both of the intersections are uncontrolled and the report said Stratford should have the yield signs “because of the commonality of the neighborhood.”

Bram moved to amend the recommendation to eliminate the Niagra/Stratford intersection and only include the Niagra/Hillcrest for the signage request. The motion died for lack of a second. A vote was taken and the motion was approved 11-1 with two absent. Bram was the sole ‘nay’ vote.

seeking to purchase a family home located at 633 Swain for $435,000 in order to help with a storm water mitigation project. Alderman Bram also pulled this item from the consent agenda for further discussion.

“I’m all for storm water mitigation, but the only reason I won’t support this measure is because we continually overpay for properties with the rationale that it’s for storm mitigation,” Bram said. “I have asked on repeated occasions to do an appraisal to see that we’re paying wisely, but so far, that hasn’t happened.

“According to my own personal research, I didn’t do a full market analysis, but I did look online and I believe we’re paying up to about $60,000 more than we need to for this piece of property. We need to purchase the property, but we don’t need to continually overpay. The residents know what we need it for, but that doesn’t mean they should be getting significantly over what I believe is the appraised or market value.”

so we do get an appraised value, at least we know a ballpark value of what we are planning to purchase,” he said. “This is not a situation where you offer a price and if you don’t like it, you move on to another neighborhood, this is a particular parcel that we need. This parcel was targeted because it’s adjacent to certain properties, which are necessary for us to move forward on storm water management.

“It’s not $65,000 over, that may be your estimation, but those are not the facts we rely on. If we pay a slight premium, it’s well worth the cost to complete this project. Otherwise, we would have to run a pipeline all the way to Salt Creek and that would cost $3 million more. So if we spend a few thousand more to save $3 million, I’d say it’s a fair deal.”

Seventh Ward Alderman Mike Brennan agreed.

“This property plus three others on the block will allow us to accelerate the more expensive project,” he said. “Otherwise, because we have to work with the County and it’s more complex, there could be three-year or even a four-year horizon. This allows us to address the problem in this neighborhood in a more timely fashion, relative to a three-year horizon. Because of the economics, and because of the timeline to get relief for the neighbors in this area sooner rather than later, I support the measure.”

“The picture likes to be painted that I’m making statements that I don’t make,” Bram replied. “I never said we shouldn’t move forward with this home purchase, I never said that once, not in any of my discussions with regards to any project at any City Council or Committee meetings or even Executive Session.

I said we pay too much and we continue to pay too much. Maybe Alderman Levin has more data than I do, but I was presented a purchase price with no data to back it up from City staff or consultant, no comparative market analysis, no appraisal, so I don’t know what other data has been shared – and I’m not saying it HAS been -- but according to comments made, there is other data that other aldermen are going by that I don’t know about.

“The data that has been provided does not include an appraisal, does not include a comparative analysis, I’ve asked those questions. I have asked for these things and I’m always told, we don’t need it, or it hasn’t been done. So don’t paint a picture that there’s other data. When I don’t get my request, I do my own research and my research reveals that we are significantly overpaying.

“We keep making references that we’re saving money, we’re NOT saving money. Let’s not compare a $60,000 saving to $3 million, that’s not realistic and it’s not the truth.

The truth is I believe we are paying too much in excess for these properties. It would be beneficial if I were given more data to say how much.

My point is from what I did – MY research.”

The measure passed by 11-1 with two absent. Bram was the lone ‘no’ vote.

Elmhurst College sees another strong enrollment year Elmhurst College is experiencing strong enrollments again this year.

The overall enrollment of about 3,500 students includes 1,263 new students, along with a higher retention rate of returning students than in previous years.

A variety of other initiatives, including a partnership with nearby DuPage High School District 88, two highly popular scholarship competitions, and an increase in the number of international students also contributed to the strong overall enrollment.

The current population includes new first-year students, incoming transfer students, new graduate students, new students attending the Elmhurst Learning and Success Academy, part-time students and all returning students.

Among the returning students, the retention rate—the percentage of first-year students who went on to their sophomore year at Elmhurst— rose this year to 82.5%, indicating a higher likelihood of graduation among those students. Another indicator that students will stay until

graduation is the campus housing occupancy rate, which reached 98% this fall.

“The high retention and housing occupancy rates are powerful signs that more students are engaging in the life of the campus, both in and beyond the classroom,” said President Troy D. VanAken. “We’re very pleased to see this, and are continually working to improve the student experience.”

As part of a partnership between Elmhurst College and DuPage High School District 88, just over 30 students from Addison Trail and Willowbrook High Schools are enrolled in advanced mathematics classes at Elmhurst. They will receive credit for the courses at Elmhurst.

Elmhurst’s high enrollments this year mark the third straight year of similar growth at Elmhurst, and come at a time of continued financial strength and the launch of several initiatives aimed at enhancing student success.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage to property Oct. 6 Nicholas G. Baum, 32, of York, Pa., was charged with criminal trespass to real property and was served a no-trespass notice at a hotel in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 2:18 a.m. Police said officers responded to a report of an intoxicated subject in the hotel lobby who was causing a disturbance. The complainant related that Baum was harassing hotel guests, police said. According to police, Baum was escorted to his room and was advised to remain in his room or he would be arrested for trespassing. A short time later, the Baum allegedly exited his room.

Oct. 4 Police said that subsequent to a traffic altercation in the 700 block of N. Willow at around 8:20 a.m., a complainant approached the suspect described as a white male, 23 years old, around 5-10 and 130 pounds, wearing a black hoodie and sweatpants and riding a blue motorized bicycle, exchanged words, and punched the suspect in the face. The suspect broke the complainant’s passenger side mirror, threatened the complainant and left the scene before police arrival. No complaints are to be signed.

Aug. 8 A victim in the 600 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 4 p.m. that the suspect has been told multiple times to stay away from the residence. On the above date, the victim found the suspect inside of her home. The reporting officer made contact with the suspect who admitted to being at the residence and knew that she was not welcome there. The victim did not wish to sign complaints.

Domestic battery, domestic incident Oct. 9 An 18-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of E. South at around 6:48 p.m. Police said a victim stated that the suspect shoved her to the ground.

Oct. 3 A 29-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of Melrose at around 11:35 a.m. Police said a reporting officer spoke to the victim who stated the suspect had grabbed her neck with both hands.

A 39-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 600 block of S. York at around 8:32 p.m. According to police, a victim reports that the suspect allegedly inappropriately grabbed and touched her. The suspect admitted to touching her, according to police.

Police said that subsequent to a check on well-being near Park and Poplar at around 9:54 p.m., a suspect was found to have pulled her sister’s hair. She later allegedly pulled her father’s hair and struck him while he was driving. The suspect was arrested. A juvenile petition will be sought for domestic battery. The suspect was released to her mother.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Oct. 6 Nathan A. Locklear, 24, of Glendale Heights, was charged with DUI and no insurance near North and York at around 11:22 p.m.

Oct. 5 Bartholome Delgado-Beltran, 31, of Glendale Heights, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, illegal transportation of open alcohol and no insurance subsequent to the report of an alleged reckless driver near North and Route 83 at around 4:53 p.m.

Oct. 4 Javier Pinela, 24, of Wood Dale, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, a driver’s license classification violation, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and no insurance, while Edward Orozco, 23, of Wood Dale, was issued a citation for befouling city property subsequent to a traffic crash near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 9:25 p.m. Police said Pinela also was found to have an active warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Police said that during a non-custodial transport, Orozco urinated in the transport vehicle.

Harassment, threats Oct. 8 A victim in the 600 block of N. County Line told police at around 2:24 p.m. that he has not seen the suspect, his step-brother, in 17 years.

On the above date, the suspect came to the victim’s workplace in Elmhurst and dropped off a knife along with the suspect’s contact information. The victim has obtained an order of protection against the suspect.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance Oct. 8 A reporting officer responded to a hotel in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 10:41 a.m. regarding an employee who found cocaine in a room of a guest who had recently been kicked out of the hotel. The officer located cocaine, heroin, and various items of drug paraphernalia in the room. Further investigation is pending.

Oct. 9 Police said two suspects driving near Route 83 and St. Charles were stopped by a reporting officer after being observed street racing. Juvenile suspect #1 was cited for speeding, street racing, curfew and operating a vehicle outside permitted times while on a GDL. Juvenile suspect #2 was cited for speeding, street racing, curfew and no valid driver’s license. Juvenile suspect #3 was cited for curfew. All were released on scene to a parent.

Oct. 6 Police said officers responded to a commercial burglary alarm at a liquor store in the 100 block of E. Fullerton at around 10:57 p.m. Upon arrival, officers observed the front door to the business was shattered. Video surveillance shows the first suspect threw an unknown object at the door, which caused it to break. The suspects ran from the scene and did not make entry to the store. The first suspect was described as a black male with a medium build, wearing a white T-shirt, a bracelet on his right hand, dark pants and a dark baseball cap.

The second suspect was described as a black male, wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Oct. 5 A complainant in the 800 block of Chatham told police at around 11:28 a.m. than an unknown suspect sent her a Facebook message containing a video of an unknown subject involved in suspicious activity. An investigation is pending.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Oct 9 Residential burglary was reported in the 400 block of Holly at around 2 p.m. Police said officers responded for a suspicious person who jumped the fence at Ridge and had a pillow case in his hand. Another witness observed a black or dark blue vehicle leave the area at a high rate of speed. While conducting a search of the area, an open rear door in the 400 block of Holly was located. While searching the home, officers noticed the master bedroom had been disturbed. The victim noticed property was missing. The suspect was described as a white male, around 6-foot tall, 200 pounds, with short brown hair balding in the back, dark blue saggy jeans, a bomber style jacket, carrying a rust color pillow case.

Police said officers responded to the 500 block of S. York at around 7:45 p.m. to the report of a suspect who was using fraudulent cards at the ATM inside a gas station. Upon arrival, suspect #1 provided officers with a false name, was in possession of several Visa gift cards, and cash. The suspect was taken into custody for further investigation. Suspect #2 was in possession of alcohol and a stun gun., Further investigation is pending.

Oct. 8 Cecilia M. Sieloff, 34, of Oak Park, was charged with two counts of retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:03 p.m.

Identity theft was reported in the 1-100 block of Elm Creek at around 3:30 p.m. A victim came into the station to report at around 6 a.m. Oct. 9 that she observed her checking account to have a zero dollar balance. A transfer was made from her Chase checking account to another Chase account that was not one of her accounts. The victim contacted Chase, they acknowledged the fraudulent activity, and stated they would initiate an investigation.

The victim will pursue charges if a suspect is located.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. York. A victim told police that while unloading tools and bringing them into the York Theater, an unknown suspect(s) entered his work van through the open back doors of his Ford Econoline and removed two tool bags from his truck. The bags contained miscellaneous tools. Video surveillance was checked an no one was observed entering the

Oct. 5-Oct. 6 Theft was reported in the 100 block of S. Hawthorne. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed a FedEx package that was delivered to his home sometime between the above dates.

Oct. 1-Oct. 4 Theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Bryan between the above dates. A victim told police that his Social Security check usually arrives on the first day of every month and his check for October did not arrive. The victim contacted the Social Security Administration and was advised to file a police report.

Oct. 3 Three cases of burglary to a vehicle was reported at a fitness center in the 600 block of N. York at around 6:33 p.m., 6:40 p.m. and 7:14 p.m., respectively. In the first incident, a reporting officer spoke to the complainant who located an unoccupied vehicle with a broken window. Officers located the owner who discovered a purse had been removed from the vehicle. In the second incident, while investigating the first incident, the reporting officer was made aware of another burglary to a separate vehicle. The victim stated an unknown suspect broke into his vehicle and took a backpack. In the third incident, the reporting officer was made aware of another burglary to a separate vehicle. The victim stated he discovered a side rear window had been shattered; however, nothing appears to have been taken from inside the vehicle.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported at an auto dealership in the 700 block of W. Lake at around 8:39 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered his unlocked car and removed an Illinois handicap placard from the rear-view mirror. ECPA 4th annual Spotlight Gala to honor Molly Lindberg On Saturday, Nov. 9 from 7-11 p.m., Elmhurst Center for Performing Arts (ECPA) will host its fourth annual Spotlight Gala to celebrate the arts in the community. The Gala benefits ECPA, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to the creation of a state-of-the-art venue for theater, dance and comedy in the Elmhurst City Centre. It will be held at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

“This year’s Gala could not be happening at a better time,” said ECPA Board Chair Jeff Budgell, referring to the recent announcement of the Elmhurst-First LLC purchase of property on behalf of ECPA. In September, the Elmhurst-First LLC (EF LLC) announced its purchase of the 109-119 First Street property securing the location for the ECPA and advancing the overall plan to establish a performing arts center in downtown Elmhurst.

This year’s Gala honoree is Molly Lindberg, founder and artistic director of Spirito! Singers. Lindberg founded Spirito! in spring 2008 with an ensemble of 50 high school treble singers. Her passion for choral music and her love for working with singers of all ages has expanded Spirito! into five rehearsal ensembles and more than 240 singers yearly.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the Elmhurst community at this year’s ECPA Gala event,” Lindberg said. “ECPA is a grassroots initiative, supported by people who believe in the value of the arts, and accessibility for all. Having built Spirito! from the ground up, I recognize the magnitude of the effort

A special feature of this year’s Gala is “Art in Bloom.” Ten floral designers from Phillip’s Flowers west suburban locations will compete with their floral interpretations of art pieces in the Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM) galleries, which will be on display for the viewing (and voting) pleasure of Gala attendees.

City’s Commission on Youth plans program for teens A mother’s story of losing two sons in one night to drugs, alcohol On Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Bryan Middle School, the City of Elmhurst Commission on Youth is hosting a program with an exceptional guest speaker. It is called Teens, Alcohol and Prescription Drugs: a deadly combination; a Mom’s story of losing two sons in one night.

Nick Savage was 19 years old, and his brother Jack was just 18 on June 14, 2015. On this day, they attended high school graduation parties, celebrating the milestone with all their friends and classmates. It was also the day these two brothers died. The reason for their passing: acute alcohol and oxycodone overdose.

They chose to drink, and they chose to take a pill when it was offered to them. These choices were mistakes and they paid the ultimate price for them.

As a result, Becky Savage chose to honor her sons, Nick and Jack, with the creation of the 525 Foundation – their hockey numbers were 5 and 25.

The goal is to prevent another family from having to endure the pain of such a tragedy through outreach, education and support.

The Elmhurst Police Dept will host an information session and Q & A following the presentation.

Fish love

We are losing a fish.

It’s happened before. We are fish people and fish sometimes die.

It’s the whole circle of life thing.

Humans typically live longer than pets. Unless your pet is a tortoise.

Even though we’ve been through this before with other goldfish (and an occasional bullhead or two), no two fish are the same and each time it’s difficult. No matter how little you believe goldfish matter in the big scheme of things.

At our house they do. And either way, seeing one clearly sick and probably dying is not pleasant for anyone.

Often the death comes fairly quickly. A fish loses the ability to swim or balance and floats near the top of the water. This wasn’t the case with Spot, who got his (her?) name because of an obvious physical characteristic.

He lingered at the bottom of the tank, resting, semi-floating atop a large flat rock. A day later he started leaning to the left, as though it was difficult to stay upright. The next day he was lying on his side, still at the bottom of the tank.

I Googled remedies as fast as my fingers could type and tried various methods, but the consensus was that our Spot was soon to lose his spot in our tank.

He’s been living with us for the last four years. The other goldfish in our tank are a year older. They all came from local fairs – the kind you win by throwing a ping-pong ball into a tiny fish bowl. Humble beginnings. But over the years, Spot and his tank mates have grown on us. They gravitate to the side of the tank each morning when they see me approach because they know it’s time for breakfast. They’ve got big beautiful eyes and even bigger and beautiful tails.

We had differing opinions on how to approach Spot’s situation.

Spot’s suffering. Others in the house couldn’t imagine killing him – because in essence that is what it would be.

After considerable discussion we decided premature flushing was not the answer. That left us in limbo. Waiting for the inevitable.

This went on for a couple of long and lingering days. He remained at the bottom of the tank and just when I thought maybe he’d passed over the rainbow goldfish bridge, he’d wiggle from one spot to another and I knew he still had at least a little bit of life left in him.

His tank mates were clearly aware of his situation. They tried to revive him by nudging him with their noses. We worried that they might be disturbing him and discussed moving him into a separate tank, but then decided that moving might be stressful, so we left him in his spot and protected him with a net.

By the fourth morning, it was clear. He was gone. I gathered him in the net and we all gathered in the bathroom to complete the final flushing process. Spot was just a goldfish, but he was our goldfish.

We were committed to giving him the best that we could – in life and in death.

And I guess in the big scheme of things that means something – something golden.

Saying goodbye

For over 18 years, I have been writing this weekly newspaper column. EIGHTEEN YEARS! That’s how long it takes to raise a child. I guess I’ve been raising me.

I have loved writing this missive every week, more than you will ever know. In this space, I have chatted on raising my two sons, now ages 25 and 27. In this time span, I have divorced The Man of the Place and married my Prince Charming.

Over all these years, I have had the privilege to share my thoughts and musings on all things life.

My gratitude is deep.

This year has been one of reflection and introspection. It is clear to me that I want less time at my desk. I am on my computer all day. It’s time for something different.

Something else is calling me, but I am not sure what. I truly do not know what 2020 and beyond holds for me and my dear sweet husband, but we do know we are all about exploration and discovery.

He will be saying goodbye to his job and I too am letting go. What our future holds, we don’t yet have

Penning a weekly article for nearly two decades is for me a Big Deal. I have learned so much. My world and my heart expanded. It shall continue to do so.

Please carry on in kindness and respect to our fellow humans who are walking this journey too. The world is full of delight and wonder and beauty and love sweet love.

Choose to see the good. Choose to be a conduit of compassion. Choose curiosity. Choose patience. Choose magic and awe.

Elmhurst Cool Cities advocates for greener parks Park District makes changes, but more work is needed

spaces. Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide found in weed killers, including Monsanto’s Roundup. A University of Washington study concluded that glyphosate significantly increases the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The product currently being used for broadleaf weed control in EPD parks, TruGreen’s SpeedZone, is not without risk, according to the ECC. Two of the main active ingredients include 2,4D and dicamba, which are listed as either “probable” or “possible” carcinogens by the International Agency for the Research on Cancer.

“Homeowners and park districts can keep their green space organic by increasing cultural controls of core aeration, overseeding and mowing

high,” said MGG’s Ryan Anderson.

“These practices build the soil, turf and plant system at every step.”

Communities across greater Chicago that have implemented pesticide-free parks include Naperville, Park Ridge, Highland Park, Evanston, Riverdale, Lake Bluff and Chicago. A number of school districts have also committed to pesticide reduction including Park Ridge/Niles School District 64, Maine Township High School District 207, La Grange Elementary School District 105, Winnetka Public School District 36, Lisle School District 202 and Evanston High School District 202. Elmhurst Cool Cities has advocated for pesticide-free lawn care within District 205, most recently addressing

the school board on Sept. 10.

In appreciation of Midwest Grows Green’s work and assistance in Elmhurst, Cool Cities donated $500 to the non-profit organization. The funds will be used to create an online toolkit to assist decision-makers in reducing chemical use.

“Just as MGG helped us advocate for pesticide-free green space, we’re confident the MGG toolkit will assist others here in town and throughout Chicagoland move away from harmful lawn chemicals,” said Jarvis.

According to members of the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition (ECC), parents can breathe a bit easier knowing their children will play on more than 30 acres of Elmhurst Park District green space that will not be sprayed with harmful pesticides.

The Park District’s decision to eliminate broadleaf pesticide application from 30 acres of park space this fall follows the decision to eliminate synthetic pesticides and fertilizers at the 2.57-acre Van Voorst Park in 2017 and the 3.49-acre Marjorie Davis Park this past June. This equates to one-quarter of the District’s turf not receiving broadcast application. Plans are also underway to transition fertilization of all parks to organic by 2020.

The Park District adopted this new park maintenance plan thanks in part to the efforts of Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition and Midwest Grows Green (MGG).

“We applaud Park District board members and staff for the work they’ve done to make Elmhurst a sustainable and vibrant community, but our efforts are not complete,” said ECC member Jill Jarvis. “It’s our hope that the Park District continues to expand their sustainability efforts by eventually eliminating synthetic pesticide applications at all parks. Their eco-friendly lawn care efforts should serve as an example for the City of Elmhurst, Elmhurst School District 205, businesses and residents.”

Task force recommends merging 649 pension funds

A task force Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker formed in February is recommending the state consolidate 649 suburban and downstate police and firefighter pension funds into just two, saying the move would generate billions of dollars in additional earnings over the next 20 years while cutting administrative costs.

But it stopped short of recommending consolidation of other state retirement funds, or the Cook Coun-

ty and Chicago pension funds, saying those are issues that should be reviewed at a later time.

In a 22-page report released Oct. 10, the Pension Consolidation Feasibility Task Force urged lawmakers to consider its plan in the upcoming veto session.

lic employee pension plans behind Pennsylvania, and it ranks 42nd out of 50 states for the average amount of total assets in each system. The suburban and downstate police and fire plans have an average of just $22 million in assets per fund, compared to $16.9 billion for each of the six state retirement funds.

On average, the 649 funds are only 55-percent funded, with 88 of the plans funded at 20 percent or less. Combined, they have a total unfunded liability of $11.5 billion.

By consolidating them into two funds—one for police and one for firefighters—the new funds could generate between $820 million and $2.5 billion in additional earnings in just the first five years, assuming they earn at roughly the same rate as the larger Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

Put another way, the report noted, the 649 local pension funds are missing out on roughly $1 million a day in lost earnings potential.

“We know that every dollar we can raise in interest is a dollar that doesn’t have to be raised in taxes or a dollar that doesn’t have to be made in cuts,” state Treasurer Michael Frerichs said during the news conference.

The task force recommended carrying out the consolidation in two phases. The first would be to consolidate the financial assets of the

systems into two funds, each with its own board and its own investment manager. The second would be to review the possibility of consolidating their benefit administration systems.

Currently, according to the report, the cost of administering those 659 local plans is significantly higher than it is for larger funds like the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund or the six statewide plans run by the state of Illinois. By consolidating administration, those plans could save an estimated $14 million a year, but the task force said there might be other forms of consolidation that could save on administrative costs while preserving “local knowledge of unique local cases.”

Pritzker said he expects the consolidation effort to run into opposition, particularly from investment managers and others who make money from managing the 649 small plans.

“I realize that this is going to disrupt their business model, but frankly we have to do what’s best for taxpayers of the state,” he said. “And that’s why this task force made sure that the special interests weren’t in the room, and the people who are directly affected – the retirees, the first responders themselves and the municipalities themselves—were in the room, as well as financial experts, to make sure they were getting the right plan put forward.”

The York Distinguished Alumni Program (YDAP) serves to recognize and honor alumni who have distinguished themselves through significant and/or extraordinary accomplishments, service and/or an outstanding contribution to society.

This year, six Dukes of Distinction have been chosen by a panel of York alumni judges and will be honored on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 2, beginning with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the York High School Commons. The program is free and open to the public.

This week, the Independent joins District 205 in a salute to Laura Orvidas from the Class of 1978.

Dr. Laura Orvidas is a nationally-recognized expert in Pediatric Otolaryngology and has been a leader in her field for many years at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. However, her story began with hard work and making the most of her opportuni-

These stories, taken from a publication called “Old Elmhurst,” were printed serially in the Elmhurst Press, during the winter of 1919 and 1920.

The Independent will print Dr. Bates’ recollections periodically in its upcoming issues. For the most part, Dr. Bates’ language has been unchanged, but part of the story has been edited for length.)

From a civic standpoint Elmhurst simply “drifted” during the first 40 years. No concerted action had ever been taken toward local government aside from that afforded by the usual township organization until Henry L. Glos began very quietly during the winter of 1880 and ’81 to work up a sentiment in favor of incorporating the village.

The four saloons were running “wide open”, absolutely free from local control, under a nominal county license of $50, issued annually by the Board of Supervisors. This insignificant tax was remitted, or not collected, if the saloon barons objected, but as a rule, it was paid with a superior, conciliating air, and collected, by the county very deferentially and apologetically, as a sort of honorarium, or free-will offering. Occasionally, some outraged citizen would venture to complain to the Grand Jury that liquor was being sold to minors, or the saloons habitually open on Sunday, but these trifling misdemeanors were usually graciously overlooked in view of the exigency. Naturally, when the suggestion to incorporate the village was first made it was indignantly regarded by these political favorites as an invasion of their inherent rights, and condemned accordingly. Anything that might possibly restrict the

Fortunately, just at this time, the temperance cause received a great impetus on the passage of a new State law, providing for an annual license of $250 for the sale of malt beverages and $500 for both malt and alcoholic drinks, with local option.

Gradually, the saloonkeepers began to read “the handwriting on the wall,” and realize that the privileges were soon to be curtailed, if not denied entirely. Taking advantage of this panicky feeling, Mr. Glos went to the local leaders and adroitly argued them into agreeing to incorporation the following spring. They were pictured as public benefactors, inasmuch as the money they paid, in order to sell liquor, would, after incorporation, go into the village treasury, instead of to the county. They were between “the devil and the deep sea.” The license could no longer be avoided, and their conclusion was, as Mr. Glos cleverly urged. “To jump on the wagon and keep the license money at home.” Following this excellent advice, all four saloonkeepers paid five hundred dollars each into the village treasury as soon as the organization was effected and proceeded to tell how “public spirited” they were. The village treasury was benefitted to the extent of two thousand dollars overnight, without the trouble of going through the formality of making a tax levy and then wasting six months before it could be collected. In other words, the money was immediately available for public purposes. Necessarily, John Barleycorn had to have representation on the village board of trustees, but it was not of a brand to do him much good.

(StatePoint) As America’s opioid epidemic continues to impact communities large and small, new trends are raising new challenges for doctors and policymakers.

While opioid-related overdose remains a top concern, the epidemic is now driven by illicitly manufactured fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. In 2017, more than 70,000 people died from drugrelated overdoses, according to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, the bulk of which were from illegal drugs.

Since its founding in 2014, the American Medical Association (AMA) Opioid Task Force has sought ways that practicing physicians could play a role in helping end the epidemic. The task force’s recommendations include urging physicians to enhance their education, as well as advocate for comprehensive care for patients in pain, and for those with a substance use disorder.

Perhaps thanks in part to these efforts, more than 700,000 physicians and other health care providers took courses related to opioids in 2018. What’s more, between 2013 and 2018, the number of opioid prescriptions decreased by more than 80 million — a 33 percent decrease nationally — with every state indi-

vidually decreasing opioid prescriptions over the past five years.

When it comes to helping patients with substance use disorder lead satisfying, productive lives, the science shows what works: medication prescribed by a physician or dispensed at special opioid treatment centers, combined with behavioral counseling and other services.

Despite certain positive trends and clear science, of the 20.3 million people nationwide with a substance use disorder, 90 percent receive no treatment, according to federal officials.

“The opioid crisis today is a national tragedy that requires the same resolve we have mustered for other public health epidemics. Those with substance use disorders deserve no less,” says AMA president, Dr. Patrice A. Harris. “Most people agree we need access to treatments that include medication. Unfortunately, that’s not readily available for many patients, and this epidemic will not be reversed until we deal with access issues and stigma associated with opioid misuse.”

The AMA stresses that while doctors are leading in areas where they can have an influence, they cannot end the epidemic alone. To combat the issue at the state and national

level, the organization has issued a national “roadmap” to policymakers focused on these specific actions: • Patients and physicians should have conversations about safe storage and disposal of opioids and all medications; and increase access to the opioid overdose reversal medication, naloxone, to patients at risk of overdose.

• Insurance providers should remove barriers that prevent patients from obtaining affordable medication-assisted treatment combined with counseling.

• Policymakers and regulators should enforce laws that require mental health benefits to be on par with other health benefits, thereby broadening access to treatment related to mental health and substance use disorders.

• Health insurance providers and pharmacy benefit managers should ensure patient access to affordable, non-opioid pain care.

Montini Catholic High School has recognized 18 freshmen from the Class of 2023. Montini offers scholarships to incoming freshmen who excel on the Freshman Placement Exam.

“All prospective students are encouraged to take the exam,” said admissions representative Jennifer Long Kavanagh (Montini class of ‘97). “This year’s exam, for the Class of 2024 will be on Saturday, Dec. 7.”

Scholarships are awarded based on national percentile ranking of the placement exam scores. Students scoring between the 95th to 99th percentiles are granted a $2,500 scholarship; those between the 90th to 94th receive $1,500; those between the 85th to 89th percentiles earn $1,000.

Kavanagh said all awards are renewable as long as students meet the renewable criteria each year.

State Rep. Mazzochi rejects pay raise Donates funds to People’s Resource Center instead

Illinois law automatically grants lawmakers a guaranteed cost of living adjustment (COLA); and this appeared in the Fiscal Year 2020 budget. Rather than keep any pay raise, State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) recently announced she would donate the excess to non-profit organizations in the 47th District each quarter. Mazzochi previously rejected the General Assembly’s legislative pension and health care benefits on offer, because “state pension plans remain woefully underfunded, and it is hard to get consensus for real reform when legislators have that conflict of interest.”

The Illinois State Constitution prohibits changing a legislator’s pay during the term they serve; thus, pay changes must be done a term in advance. Democrat lawmakers blocked Republican-sponsored legislation to reject the COLAs for the current 101st General Assembly’s term.

Mazzochi’s first donation was to the People’s Resource Center (PRC) in Westmont. “Westmont’s People’s Resource Center may have lean staff-

ing, but they and their army of volunteers are rich with generosity for our community,” she said. “They truly reflect the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor, and paying it forward, whether we look at their food pantry;

Mazzochi also noted that the PRC is in frequent need of disposable diapers, particularly for older infants.

“These can cost a family close to $1,000 per year,” she said. “If you have any extras in your home you are willing to donate, this is a simple way to help families facing financial difficulties.”

Support building for ban on red-light cameras

Bipartisan support appears to be building in the Illinois General Assembly for a statewide ban on redlight cameras.

Those are devices that some municipalities install at intersections to detect drivers running through red lights or turning without coming to a full stop.

Critics of those devices, however, argue they serve only to generate revenue and are a potential source of political corruption.

“Studies have shown that it does not improve safety. In fact, that it increases rear-end collisions,” Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said in an interview. “So this is really a revenue grab by local governments.

And, as we’ve seen recently, this is obviously tied up, but likely with cor-

ruption.”

McSweeney was referring to recent news reports indicating that one private company, SafeSpeed LLC, which supplies red-light cameras to several Chicago suburbs, is the focus of a federal probe that led to raids on the offices and home of state Sen. Martin Sandoval, chairman of the powerful Senate Transportation Committee.

Timothy Christian girls tennis team wraps up regular season Lee sports impressive 27-1 record; Freshman Yelenosky excelling as well

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team finished the regular season on a high note.

The Trojans capped off a fourmatch winning streak with a 3-2 upset win of rival Wheaton Academy.

Timothy also downed Trinity 4-1, IC Catholic Prep 5-0 and Rosary 4-1.

Timothy also took second at the Lockport invitational, defeating Lockport Maroon, Providence Catholic and Plainfield East.

The Trojans finished the regular season 9-8 overall in duals and 2-2 in Metro Suburban Conference East Division play.

Cassandra Lee was 27-1 through

late last week at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Freshman Alexa Yelenosky was 17-7 between No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Sarah Carstensen was 14-8 at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Lee defeated 2018 state-qualifier Carly Chan recently by a 6-2, 3-0 (retired) count and then downed highly regarded St. Viator freshman Maia Nowicki 6-2, 6-0.

Yelenosky was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Wheaton Academy’s Madison Brown at No. 2 singles. Brown was the conference-champion at No. 2 singles last year and was 9-1 before losing to Yelenosky. Sarah Carstensen and Yelenosky defeated St. Viator 6-3, 3-6, (11-9) in a close doubles match.

“Alexa Yelenosky as a freshman has played great and likely is our most improved since day-one of the season,” said Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills. “She has shown a lot of confidence in tight matches.”

Yelenosky and Carstensen will play doubles at the sectional tournament.

“We are adapting to my many different lineup changes,” said Mills.

“We have changed the lineup almost daily to improve matchups with opponents and build teamwork through playing doubles with numerous partners.”

Mills said consistency of play and the team’s hitting ability have improved a great deal and said strategy continues to be an area of improvement emphasis.

“Our singles play has been solid all year, and our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles have had a few bright spots lately, but we still are lacking consis-

tent strategic play,” Mills noted.

Mills added Kiana Morrisey has played mostly No. 2 singles and has enjoyed some key wins over the past few weeks, and had a four-match winning streak. Mills noted Lee is locked in on both singles and doubles, and should be a top-16 or topeight seed at the state tournament.

Mills said he’s been most impressed this season with his team’s resilience. “Win or lose, we have the same demeanor and comeback fighting the next day,” he said.

Timothy hosts a Class 1A sectional this weekend.

“We probably have played as expected with only one senior,” said Mills. “Inexperience at several spots showed at certain points of the season. Cassie and Alexa have been shining stars throughout and have exceeded expectations. Six of our nine losses have been by 3-2 scored.

A couple games here and there and we could easily have been 15-3.

We’ve lost three matches in third-set tiebreakers. The upset over Wheaton Academy was fun for the girls, which led to a solid showing at the Lockport invite where we were the smallest school in the field.”

IC Catholic Prep shuts out Elgin St. Edward Knights have sights set on another conference title; showdown with St. Francis this week

It’s test time for the IC Catholic Prep football team.

The Knights routed St. Edward 41-0 in their regular-season home finale at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst to move to 7-0 on the season.

IC Catholic Prep now turns its attention to Friday’s Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division showdown with Wheaton St. Francis in a game to be played at Wheaton College with a 7:30 p.m. scheduled kickoff.

St. Francis blew out Riverside-Brookfield 59-13 on the road to move to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Blue Division. IC Catholic Prep also is 4-0 in the conference. R-B dropped to 2-2 in conference play, meaning this Week 8 matchup with IC Catholic Prep and St. Francis likely will determine the Blue Division champion.

Three-time defending state-champion IC Catholic Prep is in search of its fifth conference title in a row. The last time IC Catholic Prep didn’t win

the conference title was 2014 when Glenbard South, now a member of the Upstate Eight Conference, won with a 5-0 record (MSC West Division at the time).

Against St. Edward, Danny Cronin completed 5 of 7 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. George O’Brien, a sophomore, went 4 of 6 for 68 yards and one touchdown.

The Knights needed to rush the ball only 13 times for 148 yards in the game (11.4 yards per carry). Max Cook ran nine times for 102 yards and scored a touchdown. He had a long run of 52 yards. Kyle Franklin ran three times for 41 yards and two touchdowns. He had a long run of 20 yards. Rashad Sbeih ran one time for five yards.

Cook caught four passes for 49 yards (26 long). Chauncey Lee caught two passes for 53 yards and a touchdown (42-yard long). Anthony Parille caught two passes for 39 yards and a touchdown (30-yard long). Franklin caught one pass for 25 yards and Sbeih caught two passes for 27 yards and one touchdown (24-yard long catch).

Koby Reed led the defense with seven tackles. Malachi Morris and Will Cooke each had five tackles.

York’s Blattner shoots career-low 79 to advance to girls golf sectional Dukes send four players to next round

York senior Haley Blattner picked the perfect time to shoot a career-low round.

Blattner shot a personal-best 79 for 18 holes and finished tied for third overall at the recent Class 2A Glenbard East regional at Glendale Lakes in Glendale Heights. Blattner shot 39 on the front and 40 on the back.

Blattner was one of four York girls golfers who qualified for this week’s Class 2A Hoffman Estates sectional where berths in the state meet were on the line.

It’s my lowest round, which is very exciting,” she said. “I was playing in a group with two other really strong players. I was feeding off some of their energy. I didn’t allow my emotions to get in the way. I think it helped to be competing in such a good group. I knew I had to step up my game playing with better players.

It helped bring out the best in my own game. I was in it to win it.”

Blattner’s previous low for 18 holes was at the same Glendale Lakes about a month ago where she shot 85 at the Glenbard East Ram invitational.

At the regional, Blattner birdied the ninth hole. “I had a really strong drive and then my second shot went on the green about three or four yards away,” she said. “I putted and sank it in. It was a fast putt, but it was online for birdie. I had a lot of up-anddowns where I was chipping and putting for par. I sank the putts I had to make. Putting was the strongest part of my game.”

Blattner also qualified for the sectional last year. “Being a senior, this means a lot,” she said. “I played in the sectional last year and didn’t do too well. I wanted to redeem myself.”

Blattner started playing the sport about six years ago, she said. “I played when I was younger and then I started back up about a month-anda-half before freshman year of high school started,” she said. “Since then, I have absolutely loved the game.”

Blattner doesn’t think she will play the sport in college, but could go the intramural or club route or try and walk-on at a school. She has her eye on the University of Georgia from an academic standpoint. She wants to study biology and go into pre-med.

“I love the south and I loved the atmosphere there when I went to visit the campus,” she said. “I fell in love with the place.”

Looking back, Blattner has nothing but positive words for the York girls golf program. “York girls golf is one of the best things to happen to me in my high school career,” she said. “It’s like family. Everybody is supportive of each other. Going to golf practice after school was never a task. It’s something I always enjoyed, and the coaches are the best ever (Barb Tilden and Peggy Babyar). They are amazing coaches who are supportive and always there to

with a 96 and lost on a tiebreaker for the 10th and final individual-qualifying spot.

York was three shots off the third and final sectional-qualifying team position.

The Dukes shot 353 as a team, York junior Elle Borchardt was the fourth Dukes golfer to qualify while Wheaton-Warrenville South for Sectionals. The Dukes did not qualify for Sectional as a team, was third at 350. finishing 4th out of 9 teams (top 3 qualified).

IC Catholic Prep boys golf team advances to sectional Timothy Christian cross country teams readying for conference

The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team advanced to the Class 1A sectional round by finishing third in the 13-team Class 1A IC Catholic Prep regional at Maple Meadows.

The Knights shot 344 and scooped up the third and final qualifying spot by seven strokes. Chicago Christian was fourth at 351.

Freshman Jann Atendido was the team medalist with an 82. Senior Louis Narcisi and freshman Kenny Jones each shot 86. Senior Shane Rollins shot 90 and junior Michael Hilgart shot 93. Freshman Nick Zanoni shot 96.

“It’s always nice to advance as a team out of regionals,” IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack said. “We weren’t very consistent. Everyone had a tough stretch during the course

of their round and that created lots of uncertainty. Fortunately, there was enough good play to offset our lapses, and we’re off to Freeport.”

IC Catholic Prep played earlier this week in the Class 1A Freeport Aquin sectional at Park Hills where berths in the state meet were on the line.

“We face a bit of an uphill battle from here on out,” said Sujack. “We are very young, but our freshmen now have the experience of an elimination tournament under their belt. I think that makes them more likely to play to their capabilities at sectionals. Considering Jann is on the short list to win every event he enters and that Louis just missed going downstate last year, we absolutely can take advantage of our opportunity at sectionals.”

Timothy is gearing up for the conference meet and the IHSA state series. “The best month of the year,” Zylstra said. “How we do for both the boys and girls teams will depend on our pack. We are strong at the top and if we can keep our pack moving up together we can do well.”

The IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team upped its Metro Suburban Conference Red Division record to 3-1 with a recent 5-0 win over Westmont. The win also moved the Knights to 4-12-1 overall.

Through 17 games, Braeden Borinkhof was leading the team in scoring with nine goals and 11 assists, while Thomas Sloan had seven

goals and eight assists.

“The team is working well with our different formations,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Miguel Garcia. “We have improved the most by playing together as a team.”

Garcia has been pleased with the team’s offensive improvement.

“Yes, our offense has progressed,” he said. “We have scored in eight out of the last nine games.”

The coach has been equally pleased with his team’s defensive development. “We are still playing strong on defense and giving up less goals,” said Garcia.

York boys soccer team enjoys recent hot streak Dukes wrapping up conference play; earned No. 7 sectional seed

The York boys soccer team chalked up plenty of momentum during a recent three-game stretch.

The Dukes went 3-0 with wins against a strong Addison Trail team, as well as Proviso West and Wheaton-Warrenville South.

Through its first 15 games, York was 9-5-1 overall and was 1-2 in its first three West Suburban Conference Silver Division contests.

In those 15 games, Joe Meade was leading the Dukes in scoring with 15 goals and 10 assists. Parker Gawne had six goals and four assists, while Ryan Woolfe had seven goals and three assists.

York coach Lukasz Majewski said his team is doing a good job of scoring multiple goals in a short amount of time.

“Although the first goal might allude us for some time, as soon as we get one in, we seem to play energized and get even more hungry for another,” he said.

The Dukes scored 48 goals in those first 15 games (3.2 goals per game average). “Sharing the ball and ball movement have been our key in the offensive-third of the

field,” said Majewski.

On the flip side, York allowed 26 goals in 15 games (1.7 per game).

“That’s too many for a team of our quality,” Majewski said. “We’ve changed some players around to solidify the defense and that seems to be working much better lately.”

Majewski said earlier last week York still was figuring out who its No. 1 goalie was and hoped to have a better idea on that topic later last week.

Individually, Majewski said Sebastian Benavides and Woolfe have been playing well of late. “Sebastian solidifies our back line and has been playing great soccer all season,” he said. “Ryan has been warming up and putting the ball in the back of the net more consistently.”

York earned the No. 7 seed in the upcoming St. Charles East sectional. The Dukes play Lake Park in the Lake Park regional on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Lake Park’s East Campus on Medinah Road in Roselle. Lake Park is the No. 9 seed. The winner advances to the regional title game on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. at Lake Park.

“We have been a little inconsistent for my liking, however we are hoping that we are peaking at the right moment of the season,” said Majewski. “It’s not how you start, but how you finish.”

York boys golf team wins Class 3A regional Dukes continue season-long dominance in 18-hole events

The Dukes won the Class 3A Addison Trail regional held at The Preserve of Oak Meadows in Addison.

York won the regional title with a 307 score, well ahead of second-place Lake Park’s 323. The Dukes played earlier this week in the Class 3A Glenbrook North sectional at Sportsman’s where berths in the state tournament were on the line.

“It was windy and wet, and I was proud of our kids,” said York coach Jim Borel. “Our kids competed throughout the day.”

Matt Buckley won the individual regional title with an even-par round of 72. Zach Sutter took third in the regional with a 77. Sam Bartolone was fourth with a 78 and Joshua LaBounty took fifth with an 80.

York now has won 18-hole tournament titles at Fenton, Batavia

With both the Dukes and Huskies sitting at 3-4, the loser of this game goes home with no shot at making the playoffs, while the winner heads to Week 9 in a must-win situation in order to become playoff eligible at 5-4. York was 3-1 at one point, but has lost three in a row. A good comparison here is Downers Grove North. York edged Downers North on the road, while Oak Park lost by a touchdown at home to the Trojans. Oak Park lost 22-15 to Hinsdale Central, while York lost 28-21. This will be a close one, but York might have the advantage with the game being at home.

“We are proud of our kids’ work ethic, which has led to some great success both on the golf course and in the classroom,” said Borel. “We have had an outstanding season.”

Borel noted the sectional field is stacked with strong teams, including his. “There are some very good teams at the sectional, including Lyons Township, New Trier, Loyola, Glenbrook North, Maine South and us,” he said late last week.

“We will have to play well to advance to the state meet. I like our competitiveness and our chances to do well at the sectional.”

After the regional, York was averaging 150.91 as a team for nine holes. Buckley was leading the way at 37.1 for nine holes. Bartolone was at 38.3, while LaBounty checked in at 38.4 and Sutter was at 38.7. Joe Bonelli was averaging 40.4, while Connor Polomsky was at 40.5.

Taking a look at the conference and regional meets, Buckley won the regional (even-par 72) and took third in conference (73). Bartolone was second in the conference with a 1-under 71 and took fourth in the regional (78). Sutter was third in the regional (77) and sixth at conference (74), while Sam Wit was 10th in the conference (76) and LaBounty was fifth in the regional (80).

York’s other two regional participants were Polomsky, who shot 84 and Wit, a sophomore, who shot 87.

York also won a regional last season, as well as in 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2006 under Borel. York qualified for state as a team in 2014 and 2015 and won the school’s only sectional title in 2015.

York Hockey Club to host annual Spirit Night

On Friday, Oct. 25, beginning at 7 p.m., the York Hockey Club invites the public to its largest fundraising event of the year, Spirit Night. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the American Cancer Society, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. It will be held on York’s home ice, which is the Addison Ice Arena, 475 So. Grace in Addison.

The Varsity game begins at 7:20 p.m., while the JV game will start at 9:10. There will be music, food and drink at the Blue Line Grill, free prize drawings, a silent auction, bake sale, a Split-The-Pot raffle and much more. There will be free t-shirts for York students with their I.D. The Club hopes everyone will come out for a great night of hockey and lots of fun for a good cause.

York girls cross country team third at Wheaton North Dukes running in WSC Silver meet Saturday at home

Coming off a big win at the Palatine invitational, the York girls cross country team followed that up with a third-place showing at the Wheaton North Falcon Classic flight meet at St. James Farm.

The race featured seven flights, all 2.95 miles in length. In the championship flight, freshman Brooke Berger finished ninth with a time of 18:02.6.

In Flight 2, sophomore Katelyn Winton was fifth at 18:12.9. Senior Lydia Hickey was fourth in Flight 3 with a time of 18:34.3.

Freshman Bria Bennis won Flight 5 with a time of 18:16.7. Sophomore Kathleen Buhrfiend was second in Flight 6 with a time of 18:45.4 and senior Margaret Clink won Flight 7 with a time of 18:56.5.

York coach Lauren DeAngelis noted York had a six-second split between its top five runners at Palatine. “Our pack on varsity has a tremendous 1-5 split,” she said. “Our team focus has been on our pack and staying together. All levels have had tremendous success this season and

have trusted our team preparation or each week.”

DeAngelis said she has been most impressed with her runners’ commitment to the team and dedication to their progression.

“They are workhorses in practice and have been doing a great job keeping a positive attitude and mindset,” she said.

DeAngelis said Winton, Bennis and Hickey, in particular, have been making big strides. “Katelyn has improved physically and mentally since freshman year. She is a fierce competitor,” she said. “Bria is so consistent and has been a tremendous addition to our top-five. She is continuously improving. Lydia is a tremendous leader and has been vital in helping this team develop.”

York hosts the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet Saturday at East End Park. “We are looking forward to seeing the entire team back in action on our home course at the conference meet,” DeAngelis said.

York was fourth at Wheaton North in the junior-senior open (2.95 miles). Senior Maya Curry was 18th at 19:46.9, while senior Ayesha Siddiqi was 19th at 19:48.5. Senior Emma Kern was 31st at 20:18.2.

Senior Courtney Dunlap was 40th at 20:35.8 and senior Mary Kritikos was 42nd at 20:39.4.

York dominated the frosh-soph open race at Wheaton North, winning the team title with 15 points. St. Charles East was an extremely distant second at 109 points.

Sophomore Bella Swanson won the race in 18:47.1. Freshman

Maureen Buhrfiend was second at 18:53.9, while sophomore Allison Fitzgibbons was third at 19:06.6.

Sophomore Charlotte Reedy was fourth at 19:21.2, while freshman Kate Pratt was fifth at 19:25.4.

at 19:26.8 and sophomore Shannon Farrow was seventh at 19:27.6.

Freshman Hellen Pygon was 11th at 19:42.3.

Chili Cook-Off: 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Enter your own famous chili recipe or bring your friends and sample some of the best tasting chili in the area. This will be the “hottest” event of the fall season. ESO presents Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique Nov. 10 To feature awardwinning sibling violin virtuosi

In a concert of music to stir your soul, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, continues its 59th season with Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church.

Filled with familiar melodies, Tchaikovsky’s beloved Symphony No. 6 in B minor (Pathétique) is one of the most expressive and moving musical works ever written and was the composer’s final testimony to his art and life.

The concert also features award-winning sibling violin virtuosi Isabella and Joshua Brown.

Isabella Brown recently won third place in the Cooper International Competition sponsored by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and The Cleveland Orchestra and performed with the Orchestra in a concert following the competition.

She will play Dvoák’s rhapsodic Romance in F minor with the ESO. Joshua Brown, an Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra Stanger Audition winner while in high school, has won numerous national and international competitions, including
