City announces plans to celebrate Frank Lloyd Wright Day to honor famous architect coming Oct. 24 By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
Mayor Steve Morley has already issued an official proclamation marking a special cultural collaboration between two of the award-winning museums in Elmhurst in a salute to famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Elmhurst Art Museum and Elmhurst History Museum are presenting two different exhibits, each focused on different aspects of Wright’s life and work. The Elmhurst History Museum is presenting “Frank Lloyd Wright:
Architecture of the Interior,” a national touring exhibit from International Arts and Artists that explores the interior design of Wright’s houses, often considered his greatest architectural accomplishment. With a greater emphasis on the architect himself, rather than his structures, the Elmhurst Art Museum is exhibiting Wright Before the “Lloyd,” curated by Chicago’s cultural historian Tim Samuelson. The exhibition focuses on the early work by the young architect “Frank L. Wright,” Wright Before the “Lloyd” takes the art enthusiast inside the mind of Wright who borrowed from styles such as modernism, classicism, Tudor, Colonial and Japanese, while remaining true to his own style. nership, the City of Elmhurst has declared Saturday, Oct. 24 Frank Lloyd Wright Day in the City of Elmhurst. The community is asked to come together to celebrate the work and life of this well-known individual, who once lived in Oak Park in a house with a studio that both still stand. Elmhurst is blessed to have the Henderson House, which is one of Wright’s classic Prairie-style homes built in 1901. Wright’s architectural influence can also be seen in two residences designed by Walter Burley Griffin, a former Elmhurst resident, who followed in Wright’s footsteps on his path to success. Wright’s work received international acclaim in 2019, when he became the first modern American architect to be on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list. Many special events and programs will be held throughout the fall and winter season in conjunction with both exhibits, as both Museums are offering interesting ways to learn more about Wright, even for children. The Elmhurst History Museum is located at 120 E. Park Ave., while the Elmhurst Art Museum can be found at 150 Cottage Hill Ave. in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park. Both museums are located in downtown Elmhurst within walking distance from each other and the Elmhurst Metra station.
