Good news on the horizon for Fly Quiet Runway Tests

Last week, the Independent reported that the City of Elmhurst had scheduled a public meeting at City Hall to discuss the Chicago Department of Aviation’s Fly Quiet Runway Rotation Program (RRP) on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

The public meeting was requested due to the recent 100% increase in nighttime airplane noise affecting specific areas of Elmhurst. Christina Drouet, FAA Acting Regional Administrator for the Great Lakes, came to City Hall to speak before an

audience of about 60 people, including Mayor Steve Morley and several aldermen.

The test was implemented to analyze the shared impact of aircraft noise in neighborhoods surrounding O’Hare Airport. The RRP Tests encourage pilots and traffic controllers to use designated nighttime runways.

The tests are analyzed along with community feedback, including a survey designed for the RRP.

“Currently there are six east-west runways and two that are toward the northeast,” she said. “There is also a diagonal runway which is necessary because sometimes wind conditions make it tough to use east-west runways.

“Runway 1530 will be decommissioned next year. The last runway

in the O’Hare Modernization Plan (OMP) is scheduled to be completed by 2020.”

Drouet made the point that safety was the #1 primary concern.

During the question & answer portion of the presentation, she addressed a query about the environmental impact statements.

“We look at where the primary impacts are and how can we reduce those impacts,” she said.

In the Oct. 5 issue of the Elmhurst Independent, under Park Board Capsules, there was an incorrect quote, which read as follows: “Commissioner Doug Ennis said the issue is important to him. Ennis added that the district needs to continue to look at the possibilities of avoiding the use of pesticide-free products.”

The quote by Commissioner Ennis should actually say “… avoiding the use of pesticide products.” The quote as is indicates the opposite of what Ennis was trying to say, meaning he would like the District to avoid the use of pesticide products when possible. The Independent regrets the error.

Local resident honored by Illinois Office of Exports Bob Pine takes common device around the world

If you’re active in the Elmhurst community at all, you’ve likely heard of Bob Pine. Bob has been active for years particularly in the arts community and with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, which he has supported for many years.

Like most local citizens, it’s the things he does behind the scenes that have made an even bigger impact — to the point he has now received an award that places him in the forefront of the international scene.

Typically over the summer, Pine spends time in Europe, particularly Poland and Lithuania where he can speak the language. He teaches English and shares the books he has written for children and adolescents.

“Yes, I can speak Polish and Lithuanian,” he told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “I still remember a little of my high school French and a little Italian!”

Language leads to business opportunities His versatile ability with languages as well as his background in banking and financial investment caught the attention of several companies who have hired Pine as a consultant.

He has worked in many capacities, including providing representation at various European trade shows in England, France, Italy, Germany and Poland over the years.

Pine knows a 5th generation family which has been in the cemetery and funeral business since 1892. He began to learn and appreciate the traditions and rituals surrounding death, wakes, and burials in other lands such as India, Sri Lanka, West Africa and South Africa. That led to an opportunity to be a marketing consultant and relationship manager for a distributor of products used in the funeral business called the Frigid Fluid Company.

He described one such product.

“During a burial service, the casket is placed on a metal apparatus at the cemetery exactly where it will be lowered into the ground,” Pine explained. “If you’ve ever watched what happens after the ceremony, the casket is lowered into the ground automatically through the use of hydraulics. We’ve been using it in this country for many years, but no one knew about them in other countries.

They were still lowering caskets into the ground manually, using big straps or ropes.”

Pine said a Polish distributor saw a movie that featured an automatic device to lower caskets into the ground and decided to look into the

idea for Poland. By using his various languages —- and sometimes a translator — Pine helped Frigid Fluid bring its products to the international market.

With that came a flurry of regulatory issues that vary from country to country, especially with the European Union.

“Some regulations overlap but not always,” Pine said. “It was all part of my job in marketing to learn about them in order to take the product to the marketplace.”

It put him in touch with the U.S Embassies and commerce departments of countries around the world.

Frigid Fluid is now looking at markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Company honored by state export office The success of taking the company’s products to an international market caught the attention of the Export Office of the State of Illinois.

“This is an office that fosters ex-

ports,” he said. “They seek out companies in Illinois who manufacture and produce items that are later exported to countries throughout the world.”

The Export Office annually presents the Governor’s Export Awards and in 2016, Frigid Fluid Co. made the list, along with three other manufacturers. The company received an Export Continuing Excellence Award, which Pine accepted along with Brian Yeazel, president of Frigid Fluid.

According to the Export Office, Illinois is the largest exporting state in the Midwest, and the fifth largest exporting state in the nation. Exports

by Illinois companies totaled more than $63.4 billion in 2015. The 2016 awardees have a combined export revenue in excess of $75 million and employ more than 1,000 people in Illinois.

Pine was given the award at a reception in Chicago, presented by Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti.

“Our state takes great pride in its

exports and through this event we recognize businesses and organizations that succeed in international trading and exporting,” Sanguinetti said. “Our administration is committed to creating a friendlier business climate, focused on helping businesses grow by reducing bureaucracy and making Illinois more attractive for companies to grow and stay in our great state.”

When asked about the Export Continuing Excellence Award, Pine made a formal statement for the press.

“Frigid Fluid recognized and is responding to the increasing economic strength and consumer demand in Latin America and Africa, in addition to expanding its base in Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand,” he said.

When he’s not traveling around the world, Bob Pine does make it back for a symphony concert or an art show now and then. After all, he’s never lost his love for the community of Elmhurst.

A champion of causes, Brent fearlessly defends underdogs of all walks

of life. He is no longer hiding “behind the stick,” as he reveals his own hidden challenges.

“Winners and champions aren’t those without struggles; they are the people that overcome them,” he said.

The battles Brent fought on the ice left visible scars, but the invisible wounds he suffered cut deeper.

Brent’s personal story has directed

EEDC hosts special event for realtors, developers Officials offer overview of City’s recent growth, future potential

A group of about 50 people including commercial and residential realtors, architects, builders and developers were invited to Red Arrow Tap in downtown Elmhurst for a presentation by the Elmhurst Economic Development Commission.

“We have been visiting existing businesses and offering support,” Shanklin said in his welcome.

“That’s what the City and the EEDC can do for business, provide support and let them know we are interested in their success, because it’s our success, too.”

Shanklin pointed out that the EEDC was encouraging local businesses to consider other resources available in the community, such as the Elmhurst Public Library and Elmhurst College, which not only has an excellent on-campus library but also offers marketing, logo design, planning and other services for businesses who wish to engage students in the classroom.

Mayor talks growth, new development, expanding tax base Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley was then introduced by Shanklin.

“I had no idea how hard it was to foster development before I became mayor,” he said. “It’s development that keeps a town vibrant and you can see how vibrant Elmhurst is by the amount of development we currently have going on in this town.

the more revenues we have, which makes our City run. It fosters a high quality of life.”

He noted that Elmhurst had 15,000 households and that it was in the top 10% of communities in the state with the most ongoing development.

“We look to grow revenue at every turn,” Morley said. “It’s better to grow the tax base, rather than raising taxes. We are a very pro-growth community and we have a pro-growth City Council right now.

“It is best to foster a fertile business environment and then sit back and let it happen.”

Morley noted that occasionally, he hears complaints that there is too much of one kind of business or another in the City.

“I hear sometimes that there are

too many bread shops, too many yogurt shops,” he said. “But we don’t turn them away. It’s really not the job of government to step in and get involved in that. We just want to create the environment and step aside.”

Morley introduced Willis Johnson, owner of York Theater, noting he had been there “through tough times and good times.”

“Willis Johnson brings hundreds of thousands of unique visits to our community who come to York Theater,” he said. “Those visitors don’t just see a movie and leave, they stay and take advantage of everything the City offers.”

He added that the retail market is changing due to the Internet, but that downtown Elmhurst remains especially vibrant and that is because of the theater. It had much to do with adding the 700-space parking deck on Addison Street. Morley also mentioned the Elmhurst 255 building, which is open and offers public parking, and the OPUS development that is expected to break ground soon.

When there’s an empty retail space, it can take six months to a year to build it out the way the occupants want it,” he said. “But typically, we have three or four people waiting in line to fill our vacant stores.”

The mayor said that in terms of development and growth, “we are #1 with a bullet.”

District 205 schools prepare for Veterans Day

York High School plans annual breakfast, assembly for vets

York Community High School will be holding its 7th annual all-school Veterans’ Day assembly on Friday, Nov. 10. Any interested U.S. veterans, as well as current servicemen and women, are invited to come and be honored in York’s Campbell Gym. The assembly begins at 8 a.m. and will include speeches from selected veterans, as well as York students and administrators. Veterans are encouraged to arrive at 7:15 a.m. for coffee, pastries and bagels in the high school’s Yorker Room, 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst (please enter through main door, #3).

An overview of development in the community The City’s Business Development Coordinator Erin Jason was introduced to provide updates on development going on at various parts of the City.

She first spoke about the business parks in town.

“We have consistently low vacancy in our business parks,” she said.

Jason mentioned several businesses which currently occupy the north business park by York and Industrial Drive. For instance Gerber Glass had decided to move its company headquarters to Elmhurst. Other companies were LAS Hardwoods, Long Supply, the Railway Supply Group and KB Kelly Barn.

“Our plan is to put $300,000 worth of sidewalks along Industrial Drive as a way to connect all the businesses there,” Jason said.

She talked more about the newer development on north York Road, which began with Mariano’s grocery store. Now the area houses Goldfish Swim, Brewpoint Coffee’s on-site roasting facility, GEM Car Wash and the new Thornton’s convenience station which stands in the spot formerly occupied by Stevens Steakhouse.

She further mentioned Elmhurst Hospital’s new clinic on north York and that Wilkins Hyundai and Mazda had recently split in two dealerships.

Spring Road was actually at full occupancy at the moment. She noted that Doc Ryan’s had just reopened following a compete renovation.

Other newer businesses on Spring include VM Design, Top Driver, Doshi Orthodontics and that Betty’s, Thrive, and Spenga now occupied the area that was the former home to Tree Town Printing.

Like Morley, Jason talked more about businesses in downtown and how important density is to the downtown area, because it provides a daytime population that uses the restaurants and stores during the day, rather than only nights and weekends. She noted that Elmhurst was rapidly becoming a “wellness destination” — due to the number of fitness facilities, medical offices and yoga studios.

“We are blessed with a great location,” she said. “We have a pro-business City Council and a comprehensive downtown plan, which makes it easier for builders to bring projects to Elmhurst.”

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

Oct. 3 • Police said Richard Hernandez, 59, of Wood Dale, was seen publicly viewing internet pornography and taking pictures of a female customer on his cell phone at a coffee shop in the 600 block of N. York at around 7:43 a.m.

Hernandez admitted to these actions, according to police, and was charged with disorderly conduct and was issued a trespass notice.

• Luciano Perez, 48, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication and possession of open alcohol in public at a restaurant in the 500 block of W. North Ave. at around 1:07 p.m.

• Police said that while a reporting officer was on patrol near Route 83 and Second at around 8:53 p.m., the officer observed Mario Raddi, 65, of Elmwood Park, riding his bicycle in the left lane on northbound Route 83 without any proper lighting and obstructing traffic. According to police, the officer subsequently stopped Raddi, and upon further investigation, it was learned that Raddi provided officers with a false name and also had an open bottle of liquor in his possession. Raddi was charged with disorderly conduct/obstructing identification and possession of open alcohol in public.

Oct. 1 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police at around 8:50 p.m. that a suspect entered a store and began yelling at the complainant to stop picking on her daughter.

The complainant did not have any idea what the suspect was talking about, did not want to sign complaints, but was worried that the suspect might come back into the store at some point and create a scene or worse. The suspect was served with a no trespass notice.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

Oct. 2 A victim in the 100 block of Industrial told police at around7:22 a.m. that she and a suspect were arguing and the suspect refused to give her the keys to the vehicle so she could leave. The victim related that while the suspect was driving with their child in the backseat, the suspect slapped the top of her hand and struck her in the face. The suspect told police that the victim sprayed water on him and

York at around 3:23 a.m.

Sept. 30 • Gail Brasie, 33, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and injury to city property in the 700 block of S. Parkside at around 1:59 a.m.

• Abel Cabrera-Jaramil, 34, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated DUI and misdemeanor DUI subsequent to a suspicious vehicle that was parked and running in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 1:54 a.m.

• Romerio Cruz-Evangelista, 34, of Glendale Heights, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Palmer at around 1:53 a.m.

Sept. 29 Cheryl Rekar, 36, of Highland, Ind., was charged with DUI, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at around 9:05 p.m.

Oct. 4 A victim told police that her ex-boyfriend has sending messages not only to her but also to her brother, mother, and current boyfriend.

In the messages, the suspect reportedly stated that he will continue to bother the victim.

The suspect was contacted and advised to not contact them anymore. The suspect’s mother was also made aware of the situation and will speak with him.

Sept. 30 A victim at Elmhurst College told police at around 5:23 p.m. that her boyfriend called her and left voicemail messages and threatening to cause her bodily harm she did not answer his calls while she was out with friends. She blocked his number from her phone and noti-

York at around 9:50 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle, Leavings was found to be in possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Sept. 29 Police said that upon arrival to an unknown request near York and North at around 11:28 p.m., it was determined that a victim and a suspect were involved in a verbal argument. The victim attempted to call 911 and the suspect reportedly took her phone and smashed it on the ground. The suspect was taken into custody and was then found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, cannabis, and Zolpidem® pills. He was taken to the Police Department and later released pending lab results.

Sept. 28 Tevin Parks, 23, of Aurora, was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended, no insurance and one headlight, while police said Taylor Wilkinson, 26, of Aurora, was found to be wanted out of DuPage County subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Wrightwood at around 11:59 p.m.

Oct. 4 Burglary was reported in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 1:37 p.m. A victim told police that his locker, which was secured with a lock, was broken into. Missing from his locker was an iPhone and a pair of Apple headphones.

Sept. 29-Oct. 3 Police said that a blue Ford F450 dump truck was stolen from a parking lot in the 900 block of S. Riverside Drive sometime during the above dates. The complainant was still in possession of both sets of keys to the vehicle. Upon running the vehicle’s registration through LEADS, a reporting officer found the registration had been run by the Chicago Police Department on Oct. 2. The stolen vehicle was later located in a City of Chicago tow yard. An investigation is pending.

Oct. 1 Theft was reported in the 400 block of Cottage Hill at around 11:57 a.m. A victim told police that a suspect was observed removing an empty beer keg, a table, and other party supplies from the front parkway. The victim yelled to the suspect, described as a black male, that the items belonged to him. The suspect stated, “I’m taking them anyway.” The suspect fled the scene south on Cottage Hill.

Sept. 30 • Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer at around 4:52 p.m. A complainant told police he observed a male Hispanic with long wavy black hair, around 5’10”, wearing a blue and white polo shirt and light khaki shorts place various medications into a black bag and leave

the pharmacy without paying. The area was checked for the suspect with no results.

• Theft was reported in the 200 block of S. York at around 12:48 p.m. A victim told police that she was at a consignment sale at a church when she set her company-owned cell phone down. She returned to the area moments later and found the phone missing. The area was crowded and the victim did not see who took the phone. The cell phone is owned by the victim’s employer.

Sept. 29-Sept. 30 A victim in the 500 block of W. Grand Ave. told police at around 8:10 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) broke the glass on the bed cap window of his vehicle that was parked in the rear lot on the south side of a hotel. Numerous tools had been removed from inside the bed of the truck.

Sept. 29 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Avery at around 12 noon. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) made several fraudulent transactions on his Discover credit card.

Sept. 1-Sept. 29 Police said a victim in the 300 block of E. Parkview Ave. noticed he had not received his direct deposit from his Veteran Affairs (VA) Disability account. The victim determined the money had been deposited into an unauthorized account. The VA office has been notified.

Sept. 28 • A victim in the 200 block of Ridgeland told police at around 10:59 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicle while it was parked in the driveway and removed cash.

• A victim in the 400 block of W. Fremont Ave. told police at around 10:49 a.m. that she had an appliance company come out to fix her refrigerator. A part had to be ordered and the appliance company has not been back since cashing her check.

• Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Verret at around 2:34 p.m. A victim told police he received a letter in the mail from the Social Security Office informing him his direct deposit information had been changed. The victim stated he did not give anyone permission to change the direct deposit and was advised to file a police report. The account change was caught before any funds could be transferred.

• Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 4:02 p.m.

A victim told police that while inside a gas station paying for gas and unknown suspect(s) removed her blue wallet and temporary license plate from her unlocked vehicle.

Sept. 18 A complainant in the 100 block of S. Prospect told police at around 10:41 a.m. that an unknown patron used another patron’s lost/stolen library card to rent library materials. The offender rented four video games which were then not returned to the library.

Unlawful use of a weapon

Oct. 3 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for no registration near Route 83 and Riverside at around 12:55 p.m., Tyree Phillips, 28, of Wilmington, Ill., was found to have a loaded, uncased handgun without a concealed carry permit. Phillips was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and no registration.

Warrant arrest

Oct. 2 Police said the Cedrick Montgomery, 36, of Addison, was wanted on a traffic warrant out of DuPage County subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Cayuga at around 12:30 a.m.

Montgomery also was charged with driving while license suspended and one headlight.

Third graders at Visitation started off their social studies unit on “Community” in a big way.

On Friday, Sept. 29, Officer Poli, an Elmhurst K-9 officer came to Visitation for a presentation on his role and responsibility in the community, what it means to be the K-9 handler, what his dog Diesel is trained to do, in addition to laws and safety for the students in their daily lives.

The presentation was an extension of the unit the students are studying which talks about the rules and responsibilities of people in the community, identifying the names of people and their jobs.

Officer Poli had Diesel demonstrate how he sniffs out items by having someone rub his keys in their hands and toss them into the grass while Diesel did not look. After a series of commands given by Officer Poli, Diesel quickly found the keys and the students cheered!

Officer Poli went through all the items he carries with him as a police officer and then answered questions from the students. At the end, students lined up and were able to pet Diesel as Officer Poli walked him by.

It was an informative, hands-on activity to help introduce students to their unit of study.

The school appreciates having Officer Poli visit the students and to help teach them about what it means to be a police officer in the community.

Home grocery delivery: Will it last?

It’s no secret; technology is changing the way we do things. I don’t trust myself to get dressed in the morning before checking my weather apps (I have three). And I’m not sure how I survived prior to having the find my family app at my fingertips.

But retailers are attempting to influence us in a new way (or at least new for me). They want us to purchase our groceries online. There are even incentives – free shipping or discounts, for instance. The largest retailers are in competition for our grocery dollars. Whoever wins us over first gets the prize – ka ching!

It’s an interesting concept: shopping for groceries without ever entering a store. I’m not sure how I feel about it. There are some things I simply prefer to pick out myself. Bananas. Steak. Bread. Ice cream. A cart.

But there are a slew of other products I buy over and over – week in,

all ate in college cost about 20 cents at the store, but nearly a dollar online.

Chicken noodle soup, however, is the same both places.

Despite the advertisements claiming you can choose from millions of items, not everything is available online for home delivery. You can purchase toilet paper, but not my preferred brand and type (I’m fussy that way). Some things still require a trip to aisle 12.

Shipping is free if you order a certain amount. When my cart didn’t total enough to get the free shipping I threw in a pack of paper towels (because my toilet paper wasn’t available).

I ordered a variety of random items: the aforementioned paper towels, shampoo, cat treats, potato chips, coffee, vitamins, sports drinks and assorted canned goods including soup, crab meat, tomato sauce and those

spicy diced tomatoes.

The store guaranteed delivery in two days and came through on its promise. Delivery itself was surprisBy ing.

The books that we sell are 100% community donated and we received a tremendous number of books. We are also sincerely grateful to everyone that attended the sale.

We had our best sale ever this year and we look forward to awarding our local scholarships in the upcoming months. This year, we will be able to award 3 local scholarships in addition to supporting our national efforts on gender equity.

Reader contemplates Las Vegas ‘act of evil’

Recently, we experienced an act of evil with the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

As we watched the details of the horror unfold, the people injured, and the deaths of the innocent, we were mortified and saddened.

Something happened though, as evil rained from the sky.

As people realized what was happening and ran for their lives, they helped their fellow man.

They helped each other over fences. My nephew was one of them.

They stopped to help those who were shot. They took off their shirts to minister to the wounds of their fellow man. They carried others who were injured. They helped one another get to a safe place. They loaded strangers in vehicles. First responders, police officers, and others went toward gunfire to bring others to safety. Some died covering the bodies of others with their own. No one cared if they were Republican or Democrat.

In an horrific evil act, people instantly responded with love towards complete strangers.

We showed who we really are as people.

Yes, there will always be evil acts, but Love will always win; as we’ve seen recently in Vegas and where we

Longfellow’s article in the wrong section

The recent article by Editor Dee Longfellow on York’s flag display appears to have been placed on the wrong section of your paper. (“York community taken aback by flag display; What was meant to be lesson in First Amendment turns into debacle,” Elmhurst Independent 10-5-17 issue.) Ms. Longfellow stated that York’s flag display was a “debacle.”

As I understand it, debacle means the same thing as a major failure or a fiasco. But isn’t this really her opinion?

I really hope that Ms. Longfellow is not so delusional that she things the event was a ‘major failure’ as a statement of fact. Personally, I thought it was tastefully handled (no one stepped on the flag like they were encouraged to do by the Art Institute’s School’s display [in 1989].

I also believed the timing couldn’t have been better. And whether flags can be placed on the floor is, for the moment, the well-settled law of the land.

So the next time Ms. Longfellow wants to offer her opinion on something, please act professionally and move it to the Op-ed page. But thanks for showing off your journalistic patriotism, Dee. Bob Howard

Perhaps most surprising were the spicy tomatoes. I’d ordered four cans, what with it being football season – which is just another name for spicy tomato and cheese dip season. The cans arrived together, but not in the same box. Each one came in its own box, with a cushioned plastic packing pillow and nothing else. One 12-ounce can per box. The packaging and delivery had to cost more than the profit margin on the tomatoes, but I’m no grocery (or tomato) expert.

This was an experiment of sorts.

I’d probably do it again – with certain items, especially heavy or bulky ones (with apologies to delivery persons).

But I’m not sure the concept itself will last – unless they figure out a way to pack items in a more streamlined manner.

Until then I’d advise doing one thing: invest in packing pillows.

Mayor Steve Morley was impressed.

“The presentation was very informative, I’d like all of our residents to hear it,” he said. “The explanation was the most detailed presentation I’d ever heard about O’Hare Airport and I hope everyone takes advantage of the information made available, most of which can be found at the City’s web site.”

The mayor indicated that the program had been recorded and he believes it will soon be available to the public. The Independent will report the exact details when they become available.

Where do we go from here For more information, the public is invited to visit the City’s web site at elmhurst.org. The home page immediately shows where people can voice their concerns about the 100% increase in airplane noise.

There is a 5-minute survey available at elmhurst.org/voiceconcern.

The City is advising residents to answer “No” to questions 15 and 21.

Question 15 asks, “Would you like a nighttime Fly Quiet Runway Rotation to be in place from Spring 2018 until Fall 2020?” Question 21 asks roughly the same question.

The City urges all residents to participate in the survey, even if they are

not directly affected by airport noise.

“By voicing your concern, you are supporting fair distribution of night time air traffic that minimizes the current noise impact on residents in our community,” the web site reads.

“Even if this issue does not impact you, helping your fellow neighbors will improve the entire community.”

Also from the City’s web site, there are links to several other places that offer explanations and more

information. One connects to airportprojects.net. Another leads directly to the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) site, which offers a great deal of information about O’Hare Noise Management includ-

ing “Noise 101,” the Fly Quiet Runway Rotation effort, sound insulation programs and additional resources. It is a good place to start if you were unable to attend the presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Here. Luncheon Cancer awareness event scheduled for Oct. 25

The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation will host its Hope.

Lives. Here. Luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m. at the Butterfield Country Club, 2800 Midwest Rd. in Oak Brook. The annual event is held to increase awareness and raise funds for the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center and Elmhurst Hospital’s oncology services.

Proceeds from the luncheon are used to provide patients with educational materials to learn more about their specific needs, provide community screenings for early detection and prevention, and offer the latest therapies, such as the use of the DigniCap Scalp Cooling System to lessen hair loss during chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.

Speakers at the luncheon include Christina Lavin, MS, LCGC, Genetic Counselor at the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center and Deborah Lindner, MD, FACOG, LCGC, Chief Medical Officer for Bright Pink, an organization with the mission of saving women’s lives from breast and ovarian cancer by empowering them to live proactively at a young age.

College gives alumni, faculty, staff merit awards Elmhurst resident among recipients honored on Homecoming Weekend

As one of the highlights of Homecoming & Reunion Weekend 2017, Elmhurst College presented Alumni Merit Awards to four of its graduates who have made exemplary contributions to society and to the College.

The College also presented its Faculty and Staff Merit Award to retired biology professor Frank Mittermeyer, who is a resident of Elmhurst.

The Dr. Andrew K. Prinz Faculty/ Staff Merit Award was given to Frank Mittermeyer, a retired Elmhurst College biology professor and founding director of the Center for the Health Professions. A longtime professor of biology at Elmhurst, Mittermeyer was a passionate, dedicated mentor to generations of students. After joining the Elmhurst biology department faculty in 1969, he quickly became known for courses that were challenging, creative and directly relevant to the real world, and for his support of students as they explored careers. He also spearheaded the founding of the College’s Center for the Health Professions, which provided advising and other resources to students interested in careers in health care. Mittermeyer, who lives in Elmhurst, retired in 2013 after 44 years of service to the College.

Other recipients were: Susan Frick (Class of 1985) received Distinguished Service to Society Award; Herb K. Washington Jr. (Class of 1997) received the Distinguished Service to Alma Mater Award.

York Distinguished Alumni Program announces 2017 Dukes of Distinction The York Distinguished Alumni Program (YDAP) serves to recognize and honor alumni who have distinguished themselves through significant and/or extraordinary accomplishments, service and/or an outstanding contribution to society. Launched in the fall of 2013, YDAP honored 8 members of the inaugural class. In 2014, seven Dukes of Distinction were honored; eight were inducted in 2015; and seven more in 2016. (elmhurst205.org/ydap) This year, six Dukes of Distinction have been chosen by a panel of York alumni judges and will be honored on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 2, beginning with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the York High School Commons. David Bosse

David Bosse, Class of 1980 – tried many jobs before answering an ad for a part-time fireman. He was hired by the Lisle/Woodridge Fire Department and later by the Bartlett Fire Department. He graduated from the Paramedic Program with honors. Dave worked the aftermath of Katrina, receiving Armed Forces Humanitarian and Mutual Aid Box Alarm System medals for his service. He assisted the New York Fire Department after the 9-11 attacks.

He received the Medal of Merit after saving a man from a burning building and taking him to safety. Lieutenant Bosse retired in 2016 after 20 years of full-time service.

Linda French

Brigadier General Thomas Fisher

Brigadier General Thomas Fisher, Class of 1986 – began his military career in the Michigan Army National Guard and continued with the Utah Army National Guard. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 2016, a position appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the US Senate. He is currently the Land Component Commander.

This is a rare achievement: less than one tenth of one percent of US Army officers reach the rank of General Office. BG Fisher was deployed to Iraq from 2003-2005 and graduated from the U.S. Army War College with a Masters of Strategic Studies.

Blake Byrne, Class of 1953 – spent 35 years in television broadcasting before retiring in 1997. He is Chairman of Byrne Acquisition Group, with TV and radio stations in Wisconsin and South Carolina. Blake founded the Skylark Foundation, advocating for the protection of LGBTQ rights and supporting diversity. Blake is a supporter of the arts and an avid art collector. Ballet is my main focus, but I also enjoy modern dance and jazz.”

“My most memorable performance was the run of West Side Story at York last spring. Not only was the show very emotional and meaningful to all involved, but it also was the first time that I had a lead role in a musical, one that was a dream part to play because it involves and helped me improve in acting, singing, and dancing all equally. In addition to my own accomplishments, the other students in the show all were very supportive of one another and it was very special to be able to create something with them.”

According to its website, the Marriott Theatre sells more than 400,000 tickets a year and has the largest subscription base of any musical theater. When will Newsies run?

“Newsies runs from October 25th to December 31st, with shows on Wednesday at 1 pm and 8 pm, Thursday and Friday at 8 pm, Saturday at 4:30 pm and 8 pm, and Sunday at 1 pm and 5 pm, with slightly adjusted schedules during the holidays.”

“I have been in many productions at York, most recently as Riff in West Side Story, which won the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Award for Best Production. I have also been a dance captain since my freshman year. Every performance I have been in at York has taught me something different and I am very grateful for those opportunities.”

Tell us about being cast in Newsies at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire.

“Newsies is very dance-heavy Disney musical inspired by the newsboy strike of 1899 in New York City. It follows Jack Kelly, the leader of a group of Newsies, as they fight the publishing titans of New York. I play Henry, one of the newsboys who follows Jack through the show. A few years ago, I saw the National Tour of Newsies come to Chicago. I immediately knew that I had to someday, somehow be in that show so I kept my eyes open for productions around the area until I found an open casting call for this production. I went into the dance call with around 85 other men and the creative team kept only about 6 of us to sing the next day.

When I found out I had gotten the part, I was ecstatic and couldn’t contain myself. It is a dream come true.”

What are your plans after graduating from York?

“After I graduate from York, I plan to go to college for Musical Theater while continuing to audition for professional productions. I am currently looking at several performing arts colleges and conservatories. I am very excited to see what the future holds for me.”

County Health Department reminds it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the DuPage County Health Department reminds women that early detection and regular testing are the best defenses against breast cancer.

The Health Department offers an important program to women who are underin-sured or have no health in-surance. The Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Pro-gram (IBCCP) offer free screenings to detect breast cancer or cervical cancer, both of which have better treatment results if detected early.

Although IBCCP is available throughout Illinois, the Health Department only serves DuPage County resi-dents. For more information about IBCCP and enrollment forms, visit dupagehealth.org.

In 2016, the Health Department’s IBCCP served 657 clients, and provided 1,386 screenings, including breast exams, mammograms and pelvic/pap exams.

There are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survi-vors in the United States, including women being treat-ed and those who have com-pleted treatment.

Women should be aware that: • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women.

• Hispanic women have fewer mammograms than Caucasian women and African American women.

• Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women.

• Women below the poverty level are less likely than women at higher incomes to have had a mammogram within the past two years.

Another game and another 50-point outburst by the IC Catholic Prep football team.

This time, the Knights were 59-7 winners on the road in West Chicago against Wheaton Academy in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division Saturday matinee game.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep

to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in MSC Blue play. The Knights, the defending Class 3A state champions, now will officially be able to defend that crown after having earned an automatic playoff bid with its sixth victory of the season.

In the game against Wheaton Academy, quarterback CJ West completed nine passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns with

no interceptions.

Freshman Kyle Franklin continued his strong play. He ran 14 times for 214 yards and three touchdowns. He had a long run of 62 yards. Senior Lazerick Eatman had nine carries for 41 yards and a touchdown. The Knights ran for 310 yards on only 30 carries, averaging more than a first

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team has itself quite a 1-2 punch in the form of junior Abygale Ahn and freshman Cassandra Lee. Through late last week, Lee had a 27-1 record, while Ahn, who also plays on the girls volleyball team, had a 19-1 mark.

“Cassandra and Abygale have cruised through competition, whether it is singles or doubles,” said Timothy coach Keith Mills.

Timothy was 9-8 overall and 4-0 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action through late last week. The Trojans recently lost 4-1 to Fenwick in non-conference action and also scored MSC Red wins over Ridgewood and Elmwood Park by 5-0 counts.

Lee and Ahn each went 5-0 at the recent 32-team Lockport invitational.

“In dual meets we are undefeated at first singles with either Abygale or Cassandra,” Mills noted. “They both are hitting the ball extremely well and are looking forward to the state tournament.”

Second singles, Mills added, has been a rotating group of players in that spot led by junior Abby Carstensen, who recorded a recent solid 6-4, 6-0 win over Providence Catholic.

On the doubles front, the No. 1 position has only one loss rotating between Ahn and Lee. That duo teamed up at first doubles against Fenwick and recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory that Mills labeled winning “in impressive fashion.”

Senior Anna Thompson has been a mainstay at No. 2 doubles with either Avy Traux or Carstensen. “They have had steady improvement over the last three weeks,” said Mills, who

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball Roster depth helps York boys golf team team defeats Illiana Christian to successful season Knights still in hunt for MSC Blue title

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team kept itself in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title picture with a recent 14-25, 25-14, 2515 win over Illiana Christian.

Nailah Landon had 13 kills and one block. Maya Stovall had nine kills, four aces and one block. Bella Leslie had 16 digs and one ace. Kristen Brachmann had two kills, one block and two aces. Sophie Hurt had 27 assists, three kills, eight digs and one block.

Kaya Hood had four kills and two blocks, while Josie Lytton had one kill, two blocks and eight digs.

The win moved the Knights to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in MSC Blue play.

“We’ve been playing a little stronger our last four or five matches,” IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore said late last week. “Some of the superclose matches we had been dropping before, we’re finding ways to close those out now, which is a good sign.”

D’Amore noted the recent acceleration on the floor has to do with three freshmen players on the team becoming used to the varsity game.

“It’s time,” she said. “We have three freshmen on the court and we knew it would take some time to build chemistry. We were starting from scratch with half the players on the floor and one is running our offense. It was just a matter of time of them being on the court together and figuring each other out and learning each other’s tendencies. It’s been a natural thing that has happened.”

D’Amore has been particularly pleased with one of the program’s staples—defense.

“Typically we get better and better with ball control,” she said. “Our defense is improving. Bella Leslie, our libero, is getting better and better every match. She is learning the game. She has good reads on the ball and is an aggressive defender.”

D’Amore has seen other areas take a step forward as well. “The experience we are gaining is helping,” she said. “We’re working a lot on getting our middle

attack more involved every time we are on the court.

We’re always working on our outside attack, which has been up and down at times. In volleyball you live and die by your outsides. We haven’t gotten to a good place of consistency with it yet, but we sure are working on it.”

The coach also likes the varied contributions she receives throughout her roster. “Every match someone else steps up. It’s always someone different,” D’Amore said. “We’re not depending on one person. Sophie Hurt is doing well setting for us. Her timing and confidence are getting stronger every day. She’s learning to lead and that’s difficult being a freshman setter. Kristen Brachmann is our freshman middle who is a workhorse. She gives 100 percent on the court and does a little bit of everything for us. Her presence is always known.

Maya Stovall and Nailah Landon are productive for us on the outside and Kaya Hood is our other freshman middle and is learning the varsity speed and the varsity aggressiveness. Every match it is someone different for us.”

D’Amore predicted in the preseason that the MSC Blue would be competitive and she wasn’t kidding.

“The conference is literally up for grabs,” she said. “It is all over the board. Someone beats someone one night and then that team gets beat the next night. At one point there were four or five teams that were in the hunt for first or second place with almost identical records. I think now it’s Riverside-Brookfield, Glenbard South and us who have taken a one or two match step away from the rest of the pack. We’re still definitely in the hunt.

That’s nice for us. It’s something tangible for the girls to work toward. We haven’t been in the hunt for the conference title since we joined the MSC. Usually we go through the season and we want to get better every day so when we hit postseason we are playing our best. Now these conference matches mean something. We’re in it to win it. We know there is a potential title on the line and that’s what we want.”

Dukes played earlier this week for berth in state finals meet

In many sports, the numbers don’t lie.

In the case of the York boys golf team that certainly has rang true this season.

The Dukes recently finished second at the Class 3A Elk Grove regional and advanced as a team to the sectional round of the state series. York played earlier this week in the Class 3A New Trier sectional at Winnetka Golf Club for a chance to earn a spot in the state finals meet this weekend at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington.

York shot a 306 to take second at Elk Grove, four shots off team champion Fenwick. Sophomore Josh LaBounty led the way with a 71. Senior Jake Brown shot 72, while sophomore Matt Buckley shot an 81 and junior Aidan Mann and freshman Sam Bartolone each had 82s.

That 306 came on the heels of York shooting a 304 at the recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division

meet. York also shot sub 310 18-hole rounds at Hinsdale Central (306), Limestone (309), Fenton (306) and Dundee-Crown (302, 1st place). York also turned in a 9-2 dual-meet record this season.

“We have a lot of young talent on the team,” said LaBounty, who was tied with Mann at 38.786 for the team lead in nine-hole average heading into the sectional. “We all worked hard over the summer and we all know what we still have to work on. We’re very encouraging to each other and we push each other.”

LaBounty said York’s deep talent roster makes things easier on match days. “We all know we can shoot par or better,” he said. “We give each other a hard time about that because we all know we always can do better.”

Brown is impressed with the team’s cache of young talent. “Josh, Matt and Aidan all are very good,” he said.

“They have a big drive to be good and all three want to play in college. All

On defense, the Knights needed to make only 44 tackles in the game, led by sophomore Kevin Cooke and junior Kemon Reese who each had seven. Sophomore Kevin Akins had five tackles. Junior Declan Barney, Reese and Akins each had one quarterback sack. Those three sacks totaled 19 yards in losses.

The Knights also were in top form on the takeaway front, recovering three fumbles. Saunders, Cooke and

Barney each had a fumble recovery.

Reese had a forced fumble, while sophomore Koby Reed had a pass deflection.

Eatman had a kickoff return for 30 yards. Khalil Saunders had a twopoint rushing conversion.

On the season, Franklin is leading the Knights with 705 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, while Eatman has 663 rushing yards and 10 scores.

The Knights have run for 2,131 yards on 224 carries through seven games and are averaging 9.5 yards per carry.

Hipskind is tops on the team in touchdown catches with six. Khali Sanders has four, while West and Eatman have three each.

IC Catholic Prep returns to action

Friday at home against Glenbard South in a MSC Blue game. The Knights and Raiders both are tied at 3-0 atop the conference standings.

York football The York football team dropped a 30-7 West Suburban Conference Silver Division game to Oak Park-River Forest at home in Week 7.

The loss dropped York to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in WSC Silver action.

Oak Park-River Forest became playoff eligible at 5-2 overall and moved to 2-2 in conference play. It was York’s last home game of the season.

The Dukes return to action Friday in Hillside against Proviso West, which brings a 2-5 record into the game.

Outlook: IC Catholic Prep continues to roll up the points and then some. Since losing 26-23 to St. Laurence in Week 2, the Knights have posted point totals of 54, 67, 56, 45 and 59. This game will be for the lead in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division.

To compare, Glenbard South edged St. Edward 16-13, while IC Catholic Prep beat St. Edward 56-13. Glenbard South defeated Wheaton Academy 27-23, while IC Catholic Prep defeated Wheaton Academy 59-7 last week.

IC Catholic Prep’s Leahy hitting stride at the perfect time Senior golf standout helps Knights win regional title

IC Catholic Prep senior Connon Leahy is playing his best golf at the right time of the season.

Leahy kicked off his postseason by winning the Metro Suburban Conference individual title and then followed that up by winning a Class 1A individual regional title and in doing so helped the Knights win their own Class 1A IC Catholic Prep regional title.

Leahy and the Knights competed in the Class 1A Rockford Christian Life sectional earlier this week where berths in the state finals tournament were on the line.

“I’ve been driving the ball really well,” said Leahy, who shot 76 to win the conference title (and the conference golfer of the year honor) and 75 to win the regional crown. “That’s pretty much been a key factor in my success this year.”

Beyond driving the ball, Leahy has been keeping those first shots off the tee in the fairway.

“I’ve been putting the ball in the fairway a lot and that has given me a lot of opportunity to score and has

certainly helped me be successful,” he said.

Leahy estimates his drives average in the 300-yard neighborhood. ‘That helps when you are playing courses that are not very long. You can almost overpower the course with length if you hit it that far and can keep it in the fairway.”

Leahy noted he would take a ball in the fairway he can score with as opposed to a 300-yard drive. “Hitting it in the fairway definitely is the most important thing,” he said. “It’s hard to score from the trees. But you can score from the middle of the fairway just about any time.”

Leahy said limiting mistakes helped him win a conference title.

“I kept the ball in play and didn’t make any silly mistakes,” he said. “I didn’t give myself a ton of chances, but I put the ball in the right spots and that took out the big numbers. I limited my mistakes and that lowered my score. I didn’t have much damage done.”

Leahy got hot at the back end of his regional round. “I got off to a not great start,” he said. “I battled and turned it around at the turn and

played solid golf. I had no big mistakes. If I had a bad hole I made a bogey at most. I came back and played well coming into the clubhouse.”

In terms of IC Catholic Prep’s team success, Leahy credits the guys he plays with for that. “Our team chemistry is really good,” he said.

“We’re all good friends and we all know each other well and we know each other’s game. We encourage each other. The atmosphere around here is great. These guys are absolutely wonderful. It seems somebody different is stepping up all the time.”

Leahy pointed out he missed a match against Glenbard South and stressed the importance of underclassmen Louis Narcisi (sophomore) and Michael Hilgart (freshman) stepping up at the varsity level.

“That was their first varsity match,” he said. “Younger guys stepped up.

Louis had a 46 and had we not taken a 45, Louis’ score would have counted. To shoot a score that could have easily been counted and helped win a match is impressive and that it was his first varsity match is even more impressive, especially since he’s only a sophomore.”

The York girls tennis team made some history recently.

The Dukes’ recent 6-4 non-conference win against Benet Academy in Lisle broke the school record for wins in a season.

York moved to 23-12 with the victory, breaking the old record of 22-8 that had stood since 1984.

“We have a team full of very competitive and very versatile girls who give it their all in every match and are able to play either singles or doubles for a given dual,” said York coach Tres Heimann.

“It has been a very fun season.”

Against Benet, Eva Jacobsthal was a 3-6, 7-5, (10-7) winner at No. 3 singles. Lauren Fonorow and Cristina Gamboa were 6-4, 6-3 winners at No. 3 doubles. Micki Neidigh and Rachel Kayman were 6-2, 6-4 winners at No. 4 doubles, while Jessica Paist and Wendy Zhang were 8-1 winners at No. 5 doubles. Siva Sreedhar and Isabella Nicoli also were 8-1 winners at No. 6 doubles, while Elysia Woodward and Olivia Brunke were 8-2 winners at No. 7 doubles.

Earlier, York took fourth out of 32 teams at the Lockport Invitational. The Dukes went 3-0 to start off the tournament and reached the semifinals.

York lost to Belleville East in the semifinals and to Edwardsville in the third-place match.

Cartis and Jovic were 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles, while Fonorow and Jacobsthal were 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles.

In a 3-2 win over Jacobs at Berens Park in the quarterfinals, Cartis was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles, while Nikoleit was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 2 singles. Gamboa and Fonorow were 6-3, 6-4 winners at No. 3 doubles.

In a 4-1 loss to Belleville East in the semifinals at Berens, Fonorow and Gamboa were 6-2, 1-6, (10-3) winners at No. 3 doubles.

York then lost 5-0 to Edwardsville in the thirdplace match at Lockport East Campus.

Through late last week, Fonorow was leading the team with a 29-7 record. Jacobsthal was 25-11, while Nikoleit was 24-13. Neidigh and Gamboa each were 22-8 while Cartis was 22-15. Sreedhar was 21-5, while Zhang was 19-7 and Woodward was 19-8. Jovic and Nicoli each had 18 wins, while Paist (17-11) and Riek each had 17 wins. Kayman was 16-11, while Duhig had 15 wins.

Leahy, who skis in his spare time, revealed he most likely will not play the sport in college, instead choosing to focus on his studies where he is thinking about a business-related major.

“I don’t think so,” he said when asked about playing at the next level.

“I had such a good experience playing in high school. I’ll continue to play when I’m older, but I want to focus on schoolwork and my career in college. I’ll use golf as a hobby and something to do for fun. My dad always has been in the business world and I’ve been exposed to it for much of my life. I want to do something in business. It’s pretty interesting to me.”

praise the efforts of Knights coach Don Sujack.

“It’s gone by here crazy fast,” he said. “Freshman year seems like yesterday. I wish I had four to go, but I don’t. It’s been a crazy and unbelievable four years playing under coach Sujack. It’s been an absolute honor playing for him. He’s a tremendous guy who has taught me so much about life and about myself. What he’s done for the program here at IC is unbelievable. He’s a great guy and has been a tremendous mentor. He takes the game of golf and makes it about life and what you do outside of golf. What you do away from golf defines who you are. He’s taught us that golf is great, but there is more to life than golf, for sure. I’m going to miss playing for him.”

the younger guys want to get better and they are out there putting in a lot of practice. All of us are and that’s why we’ve been so successful. We all want to be better than each other. We have a drive to compete against each other and that makes each of us better.”

LaBounty said the regional performance was another confidence booster in a season full of them. “It was a really good feeling,” he said. “It was a big confidence boost and it’s something we’ve all worked for. We all knew we could get there if we pushed each other.”

But Brown said there is more than just golf to focus on with this year’s York squad. “We have a lot of fun together,” he said. “We don’t take things too seriously but we do take it seriously when we are on the course. There

are a lot of fun guys here.”

LaBounty added the friendships will be the main thing he will cherish when he leaves the program after his senior year.

“I like the friendships I’ve made on the team,” he said. “I probably will be with most of these guys a long time after high school and through college and that’s because of the friendships we’ve made on this team.”

Brown has seen the program continue to reach new heights in his four years at York.

“I didn’t start playing golf seriously until I was a freshman,” he said.

“Each year has been a step up from the last for us.”

And the Dukes are hopeful that next step results in another trip to the state finals meet this weekend.

The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team won its own 14-team Class 1A IC Catholic Prep regional at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale.

The Knights won the regional title with a 325 team score, outdistancing North Shore Country Day (339) and Francis W. Parker (345) for the crown.

Connon Leahy led the way for the Knights. He won his second individual regional title in a row after shooting a 75. Charlie Schoonveld finished fourth with an 82. Thomas Hilgart tied for fifth with an 83.

Charlie O’Brien tied for ninth with an 85. It was IC Catholic Prep’s second regional title in a row.

“We were actually chasing two at the turn in spite of Connon’s 35 so to win somewhat convincingly is a testament to each of the guys’ play,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack. “Connon was solid all day, but Charlie, O’B (Charlie O’Brien), Hoff (Michael Hoffman) and Jake (DeWitte) all had better back-nine scores knowing we were behind. The boys are pleased and eager to get another crack at sectionals.”

The Knights played in the Class 1A sectional at The Elliot Golf Course in Rockford earlier this week

for a chance to advance to the state finals tournament this weekend.

In other recent action, the Knights, Timothy Christian and York took part in the annual Elmhurst Classic.

York won the 2-man scramble event (three 2-man teams for each school).

The Knights were second and Timothy Christian took third.

York girls golf The York girls golf team finished fourth at the recent Class AA Nazareth Academy regional held at The Links of Carillon.

York finished with a 376 team score, five shots off third-place Glenbard West, which snared the final team spot.

However, York qualified its four scoring golfers for this week’s Class AA Wheaton Academy sectional.

Senior Jenna Koeppen and junior Bella Bartolone both shot 92 to advance as individuals not on qualifying teams. Senior Katie Wegmann shot a 93 to advance and senior Annie Grasse shot 99 and also advanced to the sectional round.

The York quartet played earlier this week in the Wheaton Academy sectional at Pheasant Run in St. Charles where berths in the state finals meet were on the line.

DuPage Foundation’s Bright & Early Initiative brings summer fun

The DuPage Foundation launched its Bright & Early DuPage initiative in 2012 with a goal of ensuring that all DuPage children, regardless of race, ethnicity or income level, are ready to succeed when they enter kindergarten.

Since its inception, the Foundation has provided more than $1,048,800 in grants to help DuPage communities build collaborative, sustainable systems to assist young children and their families, particularly those who are at risk, in obtaining the resources they need to prepare for success in school.

Experience fall harvest at Kline Creek’s ‘Corn Harvest’ Everyone’s invited to 1890s fun in the fields during the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s “Corn Harvest” Oct. 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kline Creek Farm at 1N600 County Farm Road in West Chicago.

Visitors will hear the history of this valuable crop at “Corn College” before hitting the fields to pick some of the corn that will feed the cows and sheep over the winter at this living history farm. They can help load the wagons and may even help store the harvest in the corn crib.

Throughout the day, visitors can tour the 19th century farmhouse,

where they can make corn-husk dolls, explore the barn, chicken coop, sheep fold and other buildings on the 200-acre farmstead. Volunteer beekeepers will be on hand to answer questions in the honey house, and a blacksmith will demonstrate the tools and techniques of the trade in the wagon shed on Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Registration is not required for this program. Admission is free and activities are ongoing. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes for walking in the fields and be prepared to handle corn and stalks. For more information, call 630-876-5900.

Fire Department hosts open house for National Prevention Week

On Sunday, Oct. 15 from 12 - 4 p.m., there will be an open house at Fire Station #2, located at 601 S. York, as the Elmhurst Fire Department celebrates National Fire Prevention Week. Learn about fire safety while enjoying fun activities and light refreshments. The event will be focused on this year’s theme “Every Second Counts. Plan 2 Ways Out!” Guests will learn fire prevention and safety techniques through a series of educational

demonstrations. Additional activities include station tours, Lutheran Charities Comfort Dogs, fire safety trailer, high angle rope rescue at 12:30 p.m., firefighter fashion show at 1:30 p.m., simulated EMS response at 2:30 p.m., bouncy house from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., AirMed1 Helicopter at 3 p.m., and a child passenger safety seat booth.
