If York did experience an outbreak, in-person learning and athletic practices and competitions would be suspended.

According to information provided by the district, 17 district students and six district staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 since mid-August. The administrators noted that 93 staff members have had to quarantine or been symptomatic (for COVID-19) since mid-August, resulting in them being unavailable to work in-person for several days. Additionally, 356

district students have had to quarantine or been symptomatic for COVID-19.

District 205 administrators stated during the Sept. 22 meeting that the district is preparing to launch a COVID-19 dashboard that will provide information on the district’s website. More details can be found in “School Board Capsules,” elsewhere in this issue.

Whelton presents District 205 Board with budget details

At the regular meeting of the Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held on Sept. 22, Christopher Whelton, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance and operations, provided details about the district’s 2020-21 budget during a budget hearing. Board members voted unanimously during the regular meeting to approve the district’s 2020-21 budget.

Whelton began by noting that the district’s 2020-21 budget covers the year from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021. The budget calls for revenues of approximately $132.7 million, with expenditures of about $138.2 million, for a deficit of about $5.5 million.

The district started the 2020-21 fiscal year with a balance of about $63.4 million in its operating funds, Whelton said. The 2020-21 deficit of about $5.5 million with leave the district’s operating funds with a total balance of about $57.85 million at the end of the budget year.

“There are so many people unemployed, so many people, especially seniors, almost trapped in their surroundings making it difficult to do most anything, much less keep themselves supplied with food and household items,” Gibbons told the Independent in a recent interview.

“We knew this year we had to come up with something that would allow us to continue the annual tradition of the DGTT, while bringing in the kind of support we have counted on to continue to serve the clients who so greatly depend on us.”

Just tap on the app Thanks to a new smartphone app called RaceJoy and a bright new neon yellow T-shirt, the DGTT is going to continue its tradition—perhaps in a better way than it ever has before. Following the guidelines of the CDC as well as state and local authorities, this year’s 37th annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot will be a virtual race.

“First of all, this year everyone has to register online,” Gibbons said. “We’re completely doing away with live registration at [Elmhurst University] on the day of the event, no in-person registration at all.

“Once you register online, you can download the smartphone app, which will allow you to tap in at the time you start your race and it will track everything for you. Thanks to real-time GPS tracking, it will report back to the race directors, who will keep track of everyone’s efforts.”

What happens to the many people who come to Elmhurst from out of town every year to participate? Some people plan their entire Thanksgiving weekend around the race. The event typically draws as many as 8,000 for the race which is roughly three miles long.

“That’s the beauty of this app,” Gibbons said. “Anyone across the country can take part, no matter where they are. Since many people aren’t traveling in the first place, this is still a way to participate. Local

people are asked to invite and inform their out-of-town friends and relatives that they can register as usual at dangibbonsturkeytrot.org.”

Out-of-towners will receive their T-shirts by mail. They are urged (as everyone is) to take photos while running in their shirts and uploading the photos to the app for all to see.

The better ones will be chosen to appear on the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot web site.

Go at your own pace — over seven days Another feature of this year’s DGTT might just make some people very happy. You may run the race any time throughout Thanksgiving week.

That is, any time beginning Monday, Nov. 23 at 12:01 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29.

(That means, unless you really want to, you don’t have to get up early on Thanksgiving morning!)

The app will also include encouraging messages from Dan Gibbons and others to urge runners to press on.

“I hope if people are driving down the street and come upon a group of runners in bright yellow t-shirts, they’ll give them a honk in support.”

Let’s run around the Earth When Dan Gibbons realized that the circumference of the planet is 24,901 miles, it dawned on him that 8,000 people each running 3 miles would equal 24,000 miles—almost all the way around the world.

“So that’s our goal now,” he said.

“We want to keep track of everyone’s miles – no matter where they live -- and add them all together and see if we can make it around the full circumference of the Earth.

Since the race will take place over the period of a week, we can let people know via the app when we’ve made it from Elmhurst to L.A., or to Tokyo, or the Taj Mahal, something like that. We’ll keep reporting the progress.”

Morley will not seek another term as mayor

Just when most people are counting the days until the Nov. 3 General Election is over, on the horizon comes yet another Election Day in the spring of 2021. This will include local offices such as Mayor, City Treasurer and several aldermanic seats, as well as District 205 School Board, the Elmhurst Park Board and others.

The Independent learned late last week that Mayor Steve Morley had decided not to seek another term as mayor of the City of Elmhurst. While he confirmed he was not running, he said he was not ready to release a formal statement by press time.

Meanwhile, 7th Ward Alderman Mark Mulliner announced his intention to run for the top seat on the Elmhurst City Council.

“I feel that I have a vision for Elmhurst that will preserve the history of Elmhurst, as well as move Elmhurst into the future,” Mulliner said in a released statement. “I am proud of what I have done to help in implementation of that vision to date and feel that I can move us to the next

step.”

Mulliner is the longest-sitting alderman currently on the dais, having served 22 years, since 1998. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor against Morley in 2012. He has been president of School Technology Services Inc. since 2001 and was Director of Technology for District 205 Schools for 24 years, from 1982-2006. He holds a bachelor’s degree in education and B.S.ed in Industrial Arts Education.

Over the course of his tenure as an alderman, Mulliner has served on each of the four City Committees at various times and is also an ex-officio member of the Elmhurst Veterans Commission. He was instrumental in organizing the Memorial Day ‘Caravan’ last May, when COVID-19 caused the City to cancel the annual Memorial Day Parade. The Caravan began at the American Legion Post THB 182 located on Butterfield Road in Ward 7, which Mulliner represents.

Mulliner was also behind the move of “Cool Cars Under The Stars,” a car show that took place weekly on Wednesdays in downtown Elmhurst, to the American Legion Post parking lot, renaming it “Cool Cars Under The Stars & Stripes.”

Early Voting for the November 3, 2020 General Election is now available at the DuPage Fairgrounds, 2015 Manchester Rd, Wheaton.

‘Traffic cop’ for the day

Mazzochi challenges Madigan’s refusal to testify before special committee Among the Superheroes…

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst), who serves on the Special Investigative Committee into Michael J. Madigan, responded on Monday, Sept. 28 to a recent letter from Madigan stating his refusal to appear voluntarily before the Committee to provide testimony.

“Madigan has stated that he is not exercising his Fifth Amendment rights as an excuse to not appear before the Committee,” Mazzochi said.

“Thus, there should be no impediment to him providing testimony.”

Mazzochi further noted that while Madigan had “invoked the ongoing federal investigations as an alternative excuse to not appear before the Committee, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has expressly confirmed, twice, that they do not have any general objection to our investigative committee seeking testimony from witnesses or the production of documents in the course of our investigation, so long as the Committee is not seeking to provide an offer of immunity in exchange for testimony.”

“Madigan’s next excuse for non-appearance is, essentially, that he believes this entire process to be a ‘political stunt,’” she said. “It is a truth hunt. Governor Pritzker and members of Madigan’s own caucus have agreed that there are questions Madigan must answer relating to the Commonwealth Edison Deferred Prosecution Agreement and bribery admissions contained within it.

“I understand Madigan wishes to take the position that his conduct was not improper. But that is precisely the question that the Committee has been charged to investigate. If Madigan wants to dispute the charge or the ComEd admissions with his own recitation of how he understood various facts, his statements must be provided to the Committee in person, and under oath.”

Mazzochi has committed to keeping district residents informed on the Special Investigative Committee’s activities.

“Our residents deserve to know the truth of what is really going on in Illinois.”

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County

As of 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, there were 17,542 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 561 deaths. Since Sunday, there were 107 new cases and one death related to COVID-19 reported, of a female in her 60s.

Sept. 20 Rachael Scarborough, 50, of Milwaukee, was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Butterfield at around 12:57 a.m.

Assault, battery Sept. 18 Police said officers responded to an establishment in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 10:44 p.m. for the report of a battery.

The reporting officer met with the complainant who stated he was pushed by another suspect while inside of the above location. The suspect stated he shoved the complainant against a wall after a brief verbal altercation. The complainant did not wish to sign complaints and both parties left the establishment without incident.

Sept. 22 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 7:52 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect described as a white male in his 40s wearing a dark windbreaker and dark shorts left the store without paying for alcohol and fled the area.

The reporting officer reviewed video surveillance footage which showed the suspect leave the scene in a black Mitsubishi. This case is pending investigation.

Cullerton reminds residents of license, ID expiration extensions State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) wants to make sure DuPage County are aware that expiration dates for Illinois driver’s licenses and IDs have been extended until Feb. 1, 2021. All expired driver’s licenses and IDs will remain valid until then.

“Extending these important deadlines will provide relief to many and help reduce the spread of COVID-19,” Cullerton said. “We all must work together to keep our communities healthy. This smart step will help prevent long lines and overcrowding at our local driver services offices.”

The secretary of state’s office has repeatedly pushed back the deadline to renew expiring licenses since the pandemic began. The newly extended deadline will also cover driver’s licenses and ID cards set to expire in October, November, December and January.

Older adults age 75 and over have also had their driver’s license expiration dates extended by one year. The new expiration date is the motorist’s

birthday in 2021.

However, expiring license plate stickers will not be valid past the current Nov. 1 deadline, as they can easily be renewed online at cyberdriveillinois.com. Other common services, such as requesting a replacement or duplicate driver’s license or ID, are also available on the website.

“The secretary of state’s office as worked diligently to allow residents to renew and request services online,” Cullerton said. “This is a smart move to help reduce long lines and cut down on overcrowding at our local offices for residents who have no choice but to go in.”

Illinois residents who must visit a driver services facility should be aware that they will be required to wear masks. They may also have to wait outside for an extended period of time to maintain social distancing and should take the weather into account when planning a visit.

In defense of Karen: Dedicated to all the innocent Karens in the world None of us chooses our own name (at least not the original one.) Let that sit for a moment. You might be John or Steve or Julie or Lisa, but not by choice. Most likely your name came by the choice of your parents.

Imagine that another Steve or Julie did something publicly embarrassing. What if John or Lisa acted in a manner that caused others to shake their heads in disbelief and mumble, “Man what were they thinking?”

And then, ponder Karen. Poor, poor Karen. (Not the original manager-seeking one, but those who just happen to have that same name.)

I counted and I’ve known an estimated 12 Karens during my lifetime. An even dozen – by and large they were an agreeable lot. Not condescending. Not complainers.

Not unkind. Not entitled. Not demanding. Not unreasonable. None of those things.

The Karens I know are teachers, nurses and social workers, to name a few. They are helpers. They give more than they receive.

And none of them, to my knowledge, has ever asked to speak to a manager.

But people are ruthless, especially when anonymous and online. That’s why Karens are taking a beating – on every social media platform capable of posting a meme. Because memes

The victim stated nothing appeared to be missing from inside.

Sept. 18 Meagan Carter, 23, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 5:30 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the complainant who stated an employee loaded bottles of liquor into a backpack and exited the store without paying. According to police, Carter was later located and placed under arrest. Police said officers recovered stolen liquor from Carter’s backpack.

Amie Lynn Smith, 40, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 600 block of York at around 2:22 p.m. Police said a reporting officer made contact with loss prevention who stated Smith left the store with unpaid merchandise.

Theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 11:04 a.m. A complainant reported that a white electrical box was missing from the back of the business. The complainant reviewed surveillance video which showed a suspect described as a white male loading the box into a red Toyota sedan and driving away from the business.

Sept. 17-Sept. 18 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of W. Diversey. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) used a crowbar to force entry into two vehicles while they were parked in the company’s parking lot sometime between the above dates. The complainant will conduct an inventory to determine if any items were taken. This case is pending investigation.

Sept. 17 Ronnie M. Esposito, 32, of Bensenville, was charged with felony retail theft at a store in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 9:23 a.m. Police said Esposito left the store without paying for merchandise and fled the area. According to police, Esposito was apprehended and was transported to the police station.

Theft was reported in the 800 block of S. York at around 1:53 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed a plastic “slow down” sign left in the grassy area outside of a church parking lot.

A vehicle was reported stolen in the 200 block of Linden at around 1:17 p.m. A victim told police that a family member parked their un-

secured white Infiniti QX60 on the driveway and left the key fob inside of the vehicle. An unknown suspect stole the vehicle and fled the scene eastbound St. Charles Road. The vehicle was entered into LEADS. Theft was reported in the 300 block of Oak at around 11:15 a.m.

A complainant told police that as he was working in the backyard in the above area, an unknown suspect stole his orange/black Echo leaf blower from the front of the residence. Video surveillance shows a silver sedan, possibly a Nissan, with tinted windows, stops briefly past the trailer. Suspect #1, described as a black male wearing a long black shirt, black pants and white gym shoes, exited the passenger side of the vehicle, picked up the leaf blower and placed it inside the vehicle.

The suspect vehicle left the scene northbound on Oak Street. A second suspect described as an unknown white, drove the vehicle.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of Hawthorne at around 9:12 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used the victim’s personal information to file for unemployment benefits.

Sept. 15-Sept. 17 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of Fair. A victim told police of receiving a letter from IDES stating his unemployment benefits were denied sometime between the above dates. On Sept. 17, he received an IDES debit card in the mail. The victim did not activate the card and will advise IDES of the incident.

Sept. 16 Deceptive practice was reported in the 700 block of Spring at around 3:35 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who stated an unknown suspect contacted her, stating her Social Security account would be blocked unless she transferred money into an online account. The victim was aware of the scam and filed a report with the Federal Trade Commission and Social Security Administration.

Whelton stated that the district needs to keep its increases in salaries and benefits aligned with increases in property tax revenues. He said property tax revenues are up about 2.1 percent from last year to this year.

The increase in expenditures for salaries is about 6.3 percent from last year to this year, while the increase in benefits is about 3.4 percent.

He also noted that the 2020-21 budget includes $4 million in spending to maintain district facilities. He said the district used to spend $1.5 million each summer to maintain its facilities.

Karol King, 67 Karol King died on Wednesday Sept. 16, 2020 in Elmhurst at the age of 67.

From her birth to her death, Karol nourished people around her with a free spirit, a sense of adventure and unbridled love. She was born in Cleveland on Sept. 15 ,1953 and was one of five children to Kathleen and Earl King.

Karol was a true daughter of the Kings. She had a strong sense of duty and love for her family, cherished animals, was witty and sarcastic, loved an adventure and traveling, savored food and drink, and greatly enjoyed a good story.

She was an accomplished artist and traveler living many places throughout the world to include Hawaii, Germany, Hong Kong and Tonga. Karol was remarkably accepting of all walks of life. She had an uncanny ability to reach people, touch their lives deeply, earn their trust, and make lifelong friendships with them filled with love. She was the true Gypsy of the King family. She will be remembered as being bound

by nothing, completely free, adventurous and willing to go anywhere, being able to adapt to any environment, fiercely loving and loyal to her tribe, a fighter and survivor, and being the storyteller and historian of the King family heritage.

Karol’s survivors, all of whom she loved dearly, gave her purpose and brought her great joy. DuPage Foundation elects new Trustees, two from Elmhurst DuPage Foundation recently announced that four new members had been elected to its Board of Trustees.

They are Julius W. (Wes) Becton III, Betsy Goltermann, Gerald E. Lewis Jr., and James (Jim) G. Myers. The four officially began their tenure at the Foundation’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17.

In addition to her past service on DuPage Foundation’s Grant Committee, Goltermann serves on the boards of the Elmhurst Art Museum, Family Shelter Service and the advisory board of Loaves and Fishes. She also chairs the City of Elmhurst’s Public Arts Commission. She received the 2013 WSPN Philanthropic Leadership Award.

Moyer offers “Start of School” update The Sept. 22 meeting included a 2020-21 Start of School Update from Moyer and other district administrators. Moyer noted that the school year began with fully remote instruction on Aug. 24. Since then, students have started to return to school buildings for In-person instruction. Moyer stated that in-person learning for some district students began on Sept. 2. He added that In-person learning for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students began on Sept. 8, while in-person learning for students in grades 1-5 started on Sept. 14. On Sept. 21, students in grades 6 and 9 returned to in-person learning. Students in grades 7 and 10 returned to in-person learning on Sept. 28, while students in grades, 8, 11 and 12 are scheduled to return to in-person learning on Oct. 5. The majority of District 205 students are receiving in-person instruction as part of a hybrid model that also includes remote learning. Students are in school for about five hours on the days they receive in-person instruction.

Moyer said the district could administer the COVID-19 saliva tests and drive the tests to the university’s DuPage County lab. Test results would reportedly be available in three to six hours. Moyer said the tests have sensitivity rates of about 99.8 percent, so there would be very few false positives.

Moyer said that if the district tested all York students as the flu season began, it would be able to make a distinction between students with the flu and students with COVID-19. Moyer, who related that new rates of COVID-19 are high in the 15-19 age group, said the board could consider testing all York students once a week for five weeks, at a cost of about $250,000.

Moyer described the proposal of testing all York students as an offensive strategy of testing asymptomatic people, versus a defensive strategy of only testing people with COVID-19 symptoms.

Moyer said that if the district were to test staff members, it would cost the district more money. Additionally, the district might have to examine its agreements with staff members to determine if the district could stipulate that they be tested.

He said that all of the district’s scheduling plans are contingent on safety and staffing metrics. He also stated that it will be a challenge to maintain in-person in-

He said the university is looking to set up a local lab in DuPage County, which it hopes to have up and running by Thanksgiving. Moyer said the board and district could consider testing all of the students at York, which he said as an enroll-

Pinot’s Palette of Elmhurst celebrated its two-year anniversary a month before COVID -19 hit. The art studio’s success was quickly halted when it had to close in early stages of the pandemic.

Located at 214 N York St., the ‘paint and sip’ studio became popular in the Elmhurst community, owner Anam Bokhari said.

Bokhari and her mother decided to open an Elmhurst location of the franchise in 2018.

The studio offers a variety of painting experiences for all ages, and serves beer, wine and cocktails.

Bokhari started Elmhurst’s location because art has always been important in her life, she said.

“Art opened up so many things for me,” she said. “But there is a huge disconnect of arts with people. I decided to open because I wanted to see people happy.”

Opening a business at 26 was difficult, Bokhari said, even with the help of her mother. But the studio’s wide variety of options drew in customers.

Pinot’s Palette offers studio events and classes, children’s classes, private parties, corporate events and freestyle days. All art supplies are included and local artists teach classes. Customers can bring in outside food and purchase drinks at the studio. Pinot’s Palette also offers crafts, such as chunky knit blankets and wood stenciling.

Bokhari said she thinks of the studio as art entertainment.

“It’s solely for your soul,” she said. “We play music, and it can be a party or therapy.”

The staff was stumped at first about what to do, Zdun said. But after their first idea came, the creativity kept flowing.

The Pinot’s Palette team wasted no time.

They began doing virtual art only four days later.

Customers registered online and came in during pick-up times to get a take-home paint kit, which were instantly popular, according to Bokhari.

“I think parents wanted to help their kids stay busy,” she said. “We were selling 120 kits a day.”

The studio also makes an effort to give back to the community by hosting fundraisers and donating any extra supplies.

Customers appreciate the inclusive and comforting atmosphere, especially Raffaella Caputi.

“The staff makes you feel at home,” she said. “The experience isn’t just a night out.

The service they provide is far greater than one would think.”

There were 50-90 kids in each class.

They then morphed the camp into an after-school program to keep customers involved. Bokhari said their most recently successful idea is online video tutorials.

Customers can pick up their supplies at the studio, and they receive a link to the tutorial so that they can do it anytime.

“It’s been very successful,” Bokhari said.

“People have hosted virtual parties at home and corporate parties nationwide.”

Caputi, who used to go to Pinot’s Palette two or three times a week, said she is just as involved during the pandemic.

“It’s truly amazing how supportive they’ve been,” she said, “and how much they’ve tried to reach out to the entire community to keep this going.”

Recently, Pinot’s Palette reopened its doors with a limited capacity. Bokhari said it has been difficult to transform the entire business.

“It has been straining,” she said. “I’ve been working 70-80 hours a week.”

However, she said she remains hopeful, as her customers are loyal and Pinot’s Palette locations across America are working together to create new ideas.

Amidst all this, the staff remains dedicated to giving back to the community. They donated paint kits to the local fire and police departments, and still work with not-forprofits.

Bokhari said she hopes to continue reaching new audiences at Pinot’s Palette.

“I just hope we are doing everything that we can for our surrounding communities,” she said. “I want to do this for as long as I can.”

Crestview awards scholarships to students pursuing horticulture The Crestview Garden Club (CGC) in Elmhurst has presented its annual scholarships to Adrienne Payette and Docia Jarecki.

Each student received an award of $1,000. Through a partnership with the College of DuPage Foundation, the Crestview Scholarship Program supports those students pursuing a career in horticulture, landscape design, botany, conservation, forestry, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, city planning, land management or other related fields.

Adrienne Payette is from Oak Forest and is entering her final year of pursuing an associate applied science in horticulture. Her specific interests are in sustainable landscape design and floral design. She is an adult student who came to COD to pursue a second career. COD’s flexible horticulture program has allowed her to discover what she is truly passionate about and she looks forward to finding a job in the field after graduation.

Docia Jarecki is resident of Lisle and is pursuing an associate degree in science. Upon completion of her degree she plans to transfer to West-

ern Washington University with the intention of triple majoring in marine biology and environmental biology, and Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology. Docia says that this scholarship will help propel her to reach higher and higher towards ever-growing aspirations.

The CGC’s mission is to encourage the love of horticulture and gardening by educating its members and the community. The scholarship program is funded through proceeds from the club’s annual plant sale.

The Crestview Garden Club is affiliated with the Elmhurst Park District. Unfortunately, many of the club programs and annual plant sale have been cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please follow the CGC on Facebook: Crestview Garden Club – Elmhurst and keep updated on when meetings will resume. The club meets monthly on the first Tuesday of every month at the Community Bank of Elmhurst, 330 W. Butterfield Road at Spring Road, second floor, at 7 p.m.

‘Great Midwestern Road Trip’ exhibit ends Oct. 11 at EHM The Elmhurst History Museum’s latest adventure in regional history, as told by the “The Great Midwest Road Trip” exhibit, is coming to the last leg of its journey. The

exhibit closes on Oct. 11 after running throughout this summer at the Elmhurst History Museum, which is located at 120 E. Park Ave. in downtown Elmhurst.

The “Great Midwestern Road Trip” has a timely appeal especially for museum-goers whose travels have been curtailed this year. The exhibit takes anostalgia-fueled journey through the pleasures and pitfalls of packing up the station wagon for a classic Midwest vacation experience from the 1940s through the 1970s.

Visitors explore some of the iconic

settings Chicago area families visited during this era, from cheesy roadside attractions and tourist traps to memorable resorts and restaurants.

Throughout the exhibit, visitors learn about the topic through different themes including development of the interstate highway system; trip planning and budgeting; the “Green Book” guide for Black travelers; billboards and advertising; and making “pit stops” at waysides and gas stations. Family movies and vacation photos, replicas of neon road signs, and a 1950s-era gas station vignette

evoke vivid memories. Guests can pinpoint the vacation spots they’ve visited over different decades on a large wall map, and view a camping and fishing equipment display.

Interesting collectibles and curiosities featured in “The Great Midwestern Road Trip” exhibit include mid-century travel brochures, posters and advertisements; kitschy souvenirs; vintage cameras and equipment from the Elmhurst History Museum collection; eight-millimeter films, post cards and photos from family vacations shared by commu-

nity members. Visitors can also take a 1946 “A Vacation That Fits” quiz and kids can play Road Trip Bingo.

Admission to the Elmhurst History Museum is free, and face masks are required. Online reservations can be made at elmhursthistory.org. Visits are limited to one hour with a maximum of 15 guests per hour.

Elmhurst student earns NMS semifinalist at Fenwick Fenwick High School has announced the name of five students who have been named National Merit Scholar Semi-finalists. Among them is Elmhurst resident Anna Dray, who previously attended Immaculate Conception before enrolling at Fenwick.

Elmhurst University has announced its Fall 2020 Cultural Season of public lectures, under the theme “The Courage to Change: Reflection, Action and Resilience.”

Coming one year before Elmhurst’s sesquicentennial anniversary, this year’s theme is inspired by the widely-known Serenity Prayer, written by leading American theologian and Elmhurst alumnus Reinhold Niebuhr: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

All of the fall lectures will be offered virtually and most are free.

The Fall 2020 Cultural Season kicks off on Thursday, Oct. 1, with Olympic gold and silver medalist

Laurie Hernandez, who will present “I Got This: To Gold and Beyond,” this year’s Roland Quest Lecture. 7 p.m.

Admission is $5 for the general public and free for Elmhurst University students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Author and comparative religion scholar Charles Kimball will give the al-Ghazali Lecture “Truth Over Fear: Overcoming Islamophobia Through Education, Dialogue and Cooperation.” Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Researcher and Upswing Chicago Executive Director August Stockwell will give the William R. Johnson Intercultural Lecture “Liberation Access: Neurodiversity and Disability Justice in LGBTQ2IA

Work.” Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. Admission is free.

In addition, the Office of the Chaplain will host a series of conversations on faith and diversity: • “The Struggle Continues: The NAACP in DuPage and at Elmhurst University,” with Michael Childress, president of the DuPage County chapter of the NAACP. National Merit semifinalists for 2021 announced

For the tenth consecutive year, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin presented a balanced budget for the County Board’s consideration. The Fiscal Year 2021 budget proposal does not include a property tax increase for homeowners.

The total proposed budget for DuPage County is $479.7 million, with a General Revenue Fund of $177.9 million and a $69 million property tax levy, which represents a slight increase to capture new construction in the county being added to the property tax rolls. The property tax rate remains flat and the average DuPage County homeowner will not see an increase in their property tax bill.

“Balancing a budget during a pandemic is difficult, painstaking work,” said Cronin. “We have worked diligently to keep costs low and trim costs wherever possible. Thanks to our prudent stewardship of taxpayer dollars, we are able to balance the budget without burdening our residents during this difficult time.”

In their budget presentations to the County Board, State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and Sheriff Jim Mendrick highlighted rising crime rates in the County. The Chairman’s budget focuses on public safety investments, including three specialized prosecution units for the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and a training initiative on policing in a diversity society for the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Cronin also highlighted the distribution of federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act dollars to the community, including $16.5 million to the DuPage County Health Department to continue the fight against COVID-19. Funds will support COVID testing, contact tracing, purchases of personal protective equipment, and preparations for a mass vaccination program.

Hawthorne Cub Scouts off and running Pack 24 Cub Scouts at Hawthorne Elementary School are off and running this September during the new, yet challenging school year. All activities are being conducted outside, with proper social distancing in place. Over 55 scouts (kindergarten thru 5th grade) have registered for the scout year. A group of 35 Scouts went hiking at Hidden Lake last weekend with an adult. Meanwhile, 16 Scout families decorated the sidewalks of Elmhurst celebrating First Responders, Scouting, and Nature last weekend.

By answering the call, you can help keep yourself, your family and your community safe.

Residents who test positive for COVID-19 may receive a call from the number 312-777-1999 or Call-

Health Department reminds residents to ‘Fight the Bite’ Multiple West Nile Virus cases reported in DuPage County

The DuPage County Health Department announced recently that there are now four human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) in DuPage County reported this year, since earlier this month, ranging in age from 40s to 70s. All four individuals have experienced severe symptoms and their conditions have been classified as neuroinvasive disease (e.g., meningitis, encephalitis).

The Health Department is reminding residents to “Fight the Bite” and protect themselves against mosquitoes by following the 4 Ds of Defense.

• Drain standing water around your home and yard; • Defend by using insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors; • Dress with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes when outside; • Wear repellant from Dusk to Dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

The Health Department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) remains at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito

batches testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County. View the PPI at dupagehealth.org/243/Personal-Protection-Index.

While most people infected with WNV do not develop any symptoms, approximately one in five people infected with WNV will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Less than one percent will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues).

People over the age of 60 years, and those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and organ transplants are at greater risk for serious illness and rarely may progress to coma and death.

Anyone who experiences symptoms should contact their health care provider for further evaluation and care.

The oft-quoted phrase, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” rings true for the Elmhurst Garden Club.

Unable to have their annual Garden Walk and Faire or their monthly luncheons and guest speakers, the Club’s Board devised a number of ways in which to continue their mission of encouraging, advancing and stimulating an interest in horticulture and providing an outlet for creative expression.

During the summer months, always masked and in small numbers, members learned much about native plantings, landscape design, and gardening tips by visiting various members’ gardens.

Recently over 20-some members meet for a Wilder Park Tree Walk lead by David Kusnierz, ISA Certified Arborist from Sav-A-Tree, a lawn care and tree service. David has spent time as a licensed applicator in the Plant Health Care field. He also worked in research at the Morton Arboretum for the Entomoly Lab, doing extensive tree research and has been personally involved in Emerald Ash Borer research studies throughout the Chicago-land area. The group enjoyed an informative lively stroll through the park learning about the many different trees from the stately Sycamores to the Kentucky Coffee tree noteworthy for its role in the Civil War. (Soldiers would crush the large tree pods for coffee or tea.)

All were supplied with an overview map of the Park with tree locations, names and ratings.

Plans are also in place for a Fall Swag demonstration in October using dried materials from member’s gardens. A limited number of members will attend but the demonstration may be viewed on YouTube.
