Police investigate armed robbery at Butterfield gas station

According to a release from the City of Elmhurst, police are investigating a reported armed robbery that occurred at the Shell gas station located at 301 W. Butterfield Road, on Dec. 31, 2019 at approximately 5:45 a.m. An employee was inside the store when three suspects entered wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks.

One suspect reportedly displayed a black handgun and pushed the employee into a back room. The two remaining suspects then reportedly stole currency from the cash register as well as a quantity of cigarette cartons from the store. The three offenders then exited the store. The employee was not injured.

Police officers searched the area, including utilizing a K-9 team. During the search, tire tracks in fresh snow were located in a rear alley leading onto Butterfield Road.

At press time, the description of the suspect vehicle is unknown. Evidence technicians and detectives are canvassing the area for nearby security video cameras. The suspects are described as: • A male black wearing black or dark gray hooded sweatshirt, gray pants, black gloves, and a black mask partially covering his face. The suspect was armed with a black handgun.

• A male black wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, black pants, black gloves, and a black mask partially covering his face.

• A male black wearing a light blue hooded sweatshirt, black gloves, and a black mask partially covering his face.

Anyone with video footage of the area or with any information about this incident is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

Feds seize $60,000 cash from Ragucci’s home FOR THE INDEPENDENT

An investigation of a Cook County elected official has suddenly come around to hit a little closer to home.

According to a document recently released by the FBI, officials are not only interested in a Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski of McCook, but also have shown an interest in Oakbrook Terrace mayor Tony Ragucci. Over the past weekend, it was reported that Ragucci’s suburban residence had been investigated in October of 2019, when more than $60,000 in cash was seized from his home.

The FBI has been involved in an investigation of the company SafeSpeed, which operates and maintains red-light cameras that gather information about drivers not only

disobeying traffic signals, but also exceeding the speed limit. Federal agents have been looking into whether or not the company SafeSpeed obtained deals with various communities through payoffs.

During the investigation, Ragucci was quoted by the Sun-Times as saying everything in Oakbrook Terrace regarding the contract and installation of the cameras was done “legit and clean.” He also admitted, also to the Sun-Times, that the cameras were “doing big numbers,” in terms of apprehending and fining scofflaws.

Communities receive a portion of the receipts from fines collected as a result of the cameras.

State Senator pushes for SafeSpeed The push to install SafeSpeed cameras by various communities was

spearheaded by Illinois State Senator Martin Sandoval, who resigned from the legislature effective Jan. 1, 2020, amid charges of corruption. Sandoval’s resignation came just prior to a raid of his Chicago home and government offices in Springfield and Cicero by federal agents. Sandoval submitted his letter of resignation just before the Thanksgiving weekend and has made no other public appearance since, including at the fall veto session in Springfield in November, 2019.

Sandoval faced requests to step down from his seat from several people including Illinois Gov. J. B. Pritzker, who wanted to remove him as chair of the Transportation Committee. The governor was reportedly worried that the investigation into Sandoval could harm his $45 bil-

As of Thursday, Jan. 2, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), closed the Special Inspection of the St. Charles Bridge, officially removing the need for the 15ton weight limit restriction.

Effective Sunday, Jan. 5, the long-term detour routing on Pace Route 313 ended and buses will resume regular service through Villa Park.

Obituaries

Howard ‘Howie’ W. Lindman, 83 Howard “Howie” W. Lindman, of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019, at the age of 83. He was surrounded by his loving family in his home after a battle with cancer, and passed just in time to join his beloved wife Pattie for a New Year’s Eve celebration dancing to “Lady in Red.” Family members found themselves at a loss for words that were powerful or meaningful enough to describe their father, grandfather, and friend, whom they were so lucky to call their own.

Howie was born in Melrose Park on June 8, 1936, to Walter and Ethel Lindman. He attended Proviso Township high school where he met and fell head over heels for his Pattie. They married in 1956 and enjoyed 59 years together sharing a commitment that is rare in this world -- constructed by love, integrity, and kindness.

After her passing in 2015, Howie was left with a vacancy in his heart.

He honored Pattie’s memory every single day.

After high school, Howie went to work for his Uncle Pete becoming the third generation of Swedish carpenters. (Later, his son Jeff would become the fourth generation in the business and continues the business today.)

Howie and Pat moved to Broadview to raise their three children, Lori, Jeff and Gary, and lived two doors away from his sister Carol and her family.

In 1970 they moved to Elmhurst and soon after, Carol and her clan would follow. After losing their spouses, Howie and Carol shared blueberry muffins and coffee every Thursday morning and most other mornings, Howie could be found having coffee and solving world problems with “the boys” at Ron’s gas station until it sold; and, in later years, at Panera Bread.

Throughout the years, Howie never advertised his carpentry business. It was simply word-of-mouth from customer to customer about this master craftsman that always kept him busy and growing. Howie built love and care into hundreds of homes in the Chicagoland area. He specialized in finish work, crown molding and fine cabinetry. He also built lifelong friendships with many of his customers and was a father figure to the men who worked for him. The most prized project he ever built was his cabin on Two Sisters Lake in northern Wisconsin, which they named “Serenity.”

Howie counted the days until the snow melted and he could open the cabin again welcoming family and friends and making so many wonderful memories, especially for the grandchildren he adored.

“Captain” Howie loved to take pontoon boat rides, fish and sit around the bonfire for hours on end.

The cabin was a continual work in progress, built on a solid foundation of love and the most beautiful legacy a man could leave. Consider yourself lucky if you have one of his handcrafted birdhouses.

Howie taught us all compassion through his words and actions, and that there is always room in your heart to love another person. He went out of his way to make people feel loved and thought of. He became an extension to so many other people’s families. He was a father and mentor to dozens of people, which we were happy to share him with. Howie leaves behind countless people who will miss him and always lovingly remember him.

Howie is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Ethel Lindman; his wife, Pattie Lindman; and brother-in-law, Bruce Most. He is survived by his children, Lori (Doug) Johnson, Jeff Lindman and Gary Lindman; his grandchildren, Jenna (Patrick Lopardo) Lindman, Scott Copas and Danielle (Justin) Johnston; his sister Carol (Bruce) Most; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Visitation will be held at Gibbons Funeral Home in Elmhurst on Thursday, Jan. 9 from 3 to 7 p.m., with a service at 6 p.m.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family would appreciate support with a memorial in Howie’s name to Ignite Hope. Arrangements provided by Gibbons Funeral Home.

Martin Stanley Larsen Sr., 87 Martin Stanley Larsen Sr., of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 87. Curlie Ann Engdahl, 94 Curlie Ann (nee Flowers) Engdahl, 94, of Elmhurst, formerly of Villa Park, passed away peacefully Dec. 25, 2019. She was born Dec. 8, 1925, in Paris, Tenn. Following training in Nashville she moved to San Bernardino, Calif., to work in an aircraft factory. On a blind date, she met Lt. Robert E. Engdahl of Chicago in 1944. They married May 23, 1945, just before he left for Guam. Following the war, they lived in Chicago and later, relocated to Neenah, Wisc., in 1949, where their three children were born. In 1960 they moved to Villa Park.

Curlie’s passion was in making a home for her family and supporting their interests. She was a steadfast member of the Methodist Church in Paris, Neenah, and Elmhurst.

She taught Sunday school and was active in the UMW. Curlie was also very active in the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Guild. She loved family visits, gardening, bike riding on the Prairie Path, traveling and camping in the north woods. In 1983, she and Bob embarked on an around-the-world voyage in their 38-foot sailing yacht, which they completed on their 50th wedding anniversary.

Curlie and Bob lived at Monarch Landing in Naperville prior to moving to Park Place of Elmhurst in 2012. In her final years, she was in the company of life-enriching caregivers and a supportive community.

Curlie will long be remembered for her engaging smile and gracious manner. A devoted, loving wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by her three children Cynthia Engdahl (Tony Sekera), Donald (Ruth) Engdahl, and Susan (Donald) Hornbostel; her grandchildren, Matthew Hornbostel and Eric Engdahl; sister-in-law Adrienne (Richard) Berna and numerous nieces and nephews. Curlie was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2015; by her parents Mary D. (Fryer) and Walter Crawford Flowers; by a sister Mary Belle Norwood; and by her two brothers, William Robert Flowers and Walter Crawford Flowers, Jr. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Visitation will be at 2 p.m., followed by the service at 3 p.m. and a reception at 4 p.m. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst, 232 S. York Road, Elmhurst.

Angela M. Amorosi Angela M. Amorosi died peacefully Dec. 22, 2019 at Park Place in Elmhurst. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, of 62 years; her parents, Anthony and Mary Marino; and her two brothers, Joseph and Jack Marino.

Angie was a graduate of Proviso High School (1948) and Greenville College (1952). She spent 30 years in the field of education teaching elementary and junior high students in the Berkeley School District. A few of those years were spent as an assistant principal.

Angie always loved children and teaching. Her artistic abilities were always displayed throughout the classroom. She was truly loved and respected by her students and peers.

In her early years, Angie was quite a seamstress. She sewed and knitted many beautiful jackets and sweaters for her daughter and husband. Many also knew Angie to be an avid cook and baker. She delighted her family with many delicious meals throughout her lifetime.

Angie also loved all kinds of Christian and classical music. She sang many solos in the various Free Methodist Churches that she attended.

She also taught many Sunday School classes to children and young adults. Angie was a very active member of her church serving on numerous boards.

She enjoyed being president of the Women’s Missionary Society, which met in her home monthly.

Her love and passion for Jesus were always very evident in her life.

Like her husband Frank, Angie enjoyed cycling. Her favorite destinations were Starbucks in San Diego and Elmhurst. Angie enjoyed spending time in San Diego after her retirement from teaching. Her hobbies included reading, writing and cycling. She brought laughter and joy into the lives of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.

Angie is survived by her daughter, Lisa Joy (Jerry) Quick of Springfield, Ill.; granddaughters, Ashley Marie (fiancé Jefferey Barnes) Quick of Glen Ellyn; and Colleen Joy (Cameron) Mitchell of Satellite Beach, Fla.; along with her sisters-in-law Rosemarie Sarno of Geneva, Ill., Mary Ann Marino of San Diego, and Nancy Marino of Tucson and many nieces and nephews.

A private Memorial Service will be held at Park Place Assisted Living.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

was not involved, the suspect threatened to “get her.” The complainant hung up and called 911. A reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect but was unsuccessful.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance

Battery Dec. 28 James S. Magro, 30, of Lisle, was charged with battery in the 300 block of W. Grand at around 12:07 p.m. A victim told police that while he was driving, Magro, who was in front of him, would allegedly stop and yell from his vehicle asking the victim to fight. In an attempt to avoid contact, the victim tried to drive away, but the suspect allegedly followed him to a car dealership, exited his vehicle, approached the victim and pushed the victim back, according to police. Police said Magro attempted to strike the victim several times.

According to police, Magro came to the police station on the above date.

Dec. 24 Victor H. Hernandez-Garcia, 25, of Bensenville, was charged with battery in the 100 block of S. York at around 11:16 p.m. A victim told police that while saying goodbye and wishing her coworker a Merry Christmas, the suspect requested a hug, according to police.

The victim reluctantly gave the suspect a hug.

The suspect, police said, forcefully pulled the victim in, kissed her and bit her upper lip. Officers spoke with the suspect, whom police said admitted to kissing and biting the victim after she attempted to pull away.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass Jan. 1 Steven M. Halka, 22, of Elmhurst, was charged with criminal trespass to a motor vehicle near Schiller and York at around 12:32 a.m.

Dec. 29 A victim in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police at around 7:56 p.m. that while his Jeep was parked in the Schiller parking deck, an unknown suspect(s) used black marker to write profanity on its passenger side window. The victim was able to remove the graffiti.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Dec. 30 Michael C. Wright, 34, of Villa Park, was charged with disorderly conduct and theft in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 9:58 a.m. Complainants told police that Wright allegedly yelled at, and threatened, employees and customers. According to police, Wright was found to be in possession of a stolen package.

Dec. 27 A 47-year-old man from Harvey was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 800 block of S. Route 83 at around 10:16 a.m. The complainant, who is an employee at the above location, called 911, stating there was a suspect described as a black male who

CALL 800-222-TIPS was repeatedly hitting a female in the front seat of his car. Both parties told police there had been a verbal argument, but nothing physical had happened. After reviewing video surveillance, the suspect was placed under arrest.

Dec. 26 Officers responded to the 300 block of W. North at around 8:23 p.m. for the report of a physical domestic where the suspect reportedly punched a victim in the face. The suspect was not on the scene when officers arrived.

The victim told police that she and the suspect had a verbal argument, nothing physical took place and she did not want to pursue charges.

A reporting officer spoke with the suspect who related that he and the victim were involved in a verbal argument and the victim slapped him on the right triceps. Due to conflicting statements and no visible injuries, no arrests were made.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Jan. 1 Michael A. Guzman-Andrad, 18, of Addison, was charged with zero tolerance DUI, consumption of alcohol by a minor, speeding, failure to dim headlights and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near York and North at around 3:13 a.m.

Josue Hernandez, 25, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, aggravated driving while license revoked, possession of cannabis in a vehicle, and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and York at around 3:48 a.m.

Dec. 31 Courtney L. Davis, 38, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, possession of open alcohol in a vehicle, possession of cannabis, failure to signal and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Lake at around 11:16 p.m.

Dec. 28 Maira A. Casilla, 32, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, endangering the life of a child, speeding and failure to signal when required subsequent to a traffic stop near North and West at around 1:41 a.m.

Harassment, threats Jan. 1 Police said officers responded to the 200 block of E. Columbia at around 7:05 p.m. for a report of a telephone threat. A complainant told police she received a phone call from an unknown suspect who stated that someone hit his car and left her phone number on the windshield. After the complainant stated she

Dec. 30 Elizabeth Gonzalez, 29, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and York at around 2:26 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances Jan. 1 Officers responded to the report of a disturbance at an establishment in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 2:18 a.m. Upon arrival, officers learned that the subjects were asked to leave the establishment and were reluctant to do so. The complainant escorted the subjects out of the establishment where a physical altercation occurred between the parties.

There were no injuries, and the subjects were released at the scene.

Dec. 31 A complainant in the 500 block of Fern told police that he observed a suspect describe as a black male, between 18 and 25 years old, around five feet, 11 inches, 165 pounds, wearing a dark slim winter coat with its hood up, approach his vehicle and attempt to open the rear passenger door. The complainant shouted at the subject who subsequently ran across the street and through a neighbor’s back yard.

The complainant advised that nothing was missing from his vehicle. Officers checked the surrounding area and no vehicles appeared to have been burglarized.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Dec. 30 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 8:51 a.m. A complainant told police that three suspects loaded two grocery carts with cases of alcoholic beverages and exited the store without paying for the merchandise. Police said the suspects entered a silver SUV and fled the scene with the stolen merchandise. An investigation is pending.

Theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 11:10 a.m. A complainant told police that after paying his service bill, he lost his wallet containing his driver’s license, credit cards and $500 in cash. Surveillance video shows the victim unknowingly dropped his wallet in the parking lot, and the suspect picked up the wallet and concealed it in his pocket.

Dec. 29-Dec. 30 Identity theft and burglary to a vehicle were reported in the 500 block of S. Cedar. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered her unlocked vehicle and stole multiple credit cards and her driver’s license from her wallet, which she left on the center floorboard. The

victim later discovered fraudulent transactions totaling $746.84 on her credit cards. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 29 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 1:53 p.m. The store’s loss prevention checked video footage that showed two suspects entering the store, filling a shopping cart with 24 bottles of Jack Daniels whiskey and 36 bottles of Woodford Reserve bourbon and leaving the store without paying for the merchandise.

Dec. 28 Police said an officer responded to a burglar alarm at a car dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 2:50 a.m. The key holder arrived and located a broken service window behind the fenced area. Video footage shows at around 2:04 a.m., four suspects described as black males, medium build, between the ages of 18 and 20, broke the window of the south service door. One suspect apparently entered through the broken window and opened the side door for the others. They attempted to enter and start vehicles. They left after being in the building for approximately one minute without removing any items or vehicles.

Theft was reported in the 1-100 block of Elm Creek at around 9:33 p.m. A victim told police that while taking items out of her trunk, she left her purse sitting inside the open trunk and went up to her apartment. When she returned, her purse was missing. The purse contained her cell phone, Illinois driver’s license, several credit cards, gift cards and other miscellaneous items.

Dec. 21-Dec. 28 Burglary was reported in the 600 block of N. Michigan. A victim told police that while on vacation, an unknown suspect(s) entered his attached garage sometime between the above dates and removed a hammer, drill and miter saw. Also missing was miscellaneous change from his Lexus IS300 that was parked in the garage. The miter saw was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Dec. 27 Melvin Lofton, 33, of Bellwood, was charged with burglary, two counts of identity theft, possession of a fraudulent ID and obstructing in the 900 block of S. York at around 12:10 p.m. Police said that subsequent to an identity theft in progress, Lofton was attempted to open a checking account with false identification. Lofton was located in the bank and fled from officers, according to police.

A reporting officer observed a red Dodge Challenger pull into a bank in the 300 block of S. Route 83 with dark tinted windows and no front registration plate displayed. An inquiry on the vehicle revealed the owner had a suspended driver’s license and a warrant out of Georgia. Contact was made with the suspect, who was taken into custody for a traffic violation. An inventory of the suspect’s vehicle yielded five checks, which are suspected to be fraudulent and/or forged. The suspect was released without charges pending further investigation. The suspect’s two cell phones were seized, pending the approval of a search warrant.

Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of S. West at around 6:15 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) had made several unauthorized transactions on three separate credit cards. The charges totaled more than $1,000.

Elmhurst firefighters and police officers gathered at Fire Station #2 on Friday, Jan 3 to pick up ‘comfort bears’ provided by Elmhurst Knights of Columbus, Fr. McDonald Council #1911. Each first responder vehicle will have a bear equipped for use by the event the first responder. According to the KOC: “The bears can be given to children (or intellectually disabled adults) involved in traumatic events such as car accidents, fires, domestic violence, etc. The bears can serve as friends and confidants for the children as they seek to find new order in their mixed up world. Teddies also help build trust between the police and the child. They help kids feel safe.”

York Alumni Night to be held at basketball game Jan. 16 The York Community High School Alumni Association (YCHSAA) will host an alumni night at the school’s home basketball game on Thursday, January 16 against Oak Park River Forest (OPRF). The game will also be a “Green Out”, so fans are encouraged to wear York apparel or green and white colors. The varsity game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Recreational marijuana brings long lines, waits up to four hours still illegal to partake indoors in a public place.

Never mind that any marijuana in that room was clearly not purchased at a state-licensed dispensary facility.

Never mind that the room suddenly filled with a pungent cloud of aromatic smoke, whether you wanted it or not.

It was a special moment especially for the Baby Boomers, many of whom have been waiting for the legalization of recreational marijuana since the soldiers came back from the Vietnam War. Last week, the Independent reported that recreational marijuana dispensaries would be allowed in

some of the communities of the Rock Valley Publishing readership area, that is, in towns of Addison, Bensenville, Lombard and Villa Park. Elmhurst and unincorporated DuPage County have voted against the sale of recreational marijuana.

At this time, the closest legal dispensary selling legal marijuana Dee is EarthMed Medical Marijuana Longfellow & Cannabis Dispensary at 852 S. Westgate St. The next closest facility is Med Men Chicago at 1132 Lake Street in Oak Park. Legalization results in lines, long waits The staff of the Independent took turns driving by EarthMed in Addison at different times of the day on Wednesday, Jan. 1, just to see how

busy the first day of legal weed sales would be – and it was!

Most of the day, the line was as much as a half-mile long, with people patiently waiting. It was a cool day, but not bitter cold, and although it wavered between sunny and overcast, there was no precipitation, making it reasonably pleasant to stand outdoors for long hours.

No one confirmed exactly how long they had waited in line at EarthMed, but the private security personnel employed there told the Independent that lines at various dispensaries in Chicago were reporting four- to five-hour waits. While there was speculation about supply and demand, there were no reports of any dispensaries running out of product, nor were there any reported incidents of arguments, fights or disruptions at any facilities.

One more thing Has anyone else noticed that some cars on the road seem to be traveling a whole lot slower than usual?

Think. Speak. Create.

Years ago I came up with a mantra I attempt to live by: Think positive thoughts. Speak positive words. Create a positive world.

In other words, look on the bright side. It’s all about perspective.

Easier said than done. Believe me.

My mantra is just three simple sentences, but not always simple to implement. Sometimes in life, the simple becomes the most complex.

It’s hardly ever easy.

I’ve been contemplating perspective lately and the fact that even if you have multiple kids growing up in the exact same household they will come away with totally different ideas and takes on their experiences.

Take sports. I have three sons who’ve played their fair share of sports. Their insights were all unique.

One son took a factual approach to his own play-by-play commentary. He would tell us about when he scored – or didn’t.

He remembered specific plays. The game was a game and when it was over it was over.

A second son always saw the best in his athletic performance. He remembered his best plays. When the coach looked at him and smiled it was a sign of approval for a good effort. After the final buzzer, the games lived on in his mind – with his performance getting better with

every recollection.

A third child played well during the game. We know because we were there. We told him so. We reminded him of some of his stellar moments. He didn’t respond with more than a couple words, or more likely a slight nod.

Ten minutes into the ride home he often began lamenting about his shortcomings. He didn’t score enough points. He should have been faster. Everyone on the team played better than he did. And so on.

The interesting part about this, from my perspective, is the lamenting child was probably the best athlete out of the three, yet he saw himself as less-than.

We are born with the tendency to see the world through our own unique eyes. But our perspective is also shaped by our current position in life.

Take this simple example: A 4-year-old spills a glass of milk at the breakfast table and thinks, “Oh no, am I going to be in trouble?”

Mom thinks, “Another mess to

clean up.”

Dad thinks, “That was the last glass of milk. We’ll need to get more.”

Big brother thinks, “I’m glad it wasn’t me.”

Baby thinks, “Let me down from this highchair. I want to play in the white water.”

When mom mentions the incident on the phone to grandma she thinks, “ I wish I saw my grandbabies more often.”

Cat thinks, “Oh good, I love lapping up spilt milk. I can perhaps help you with clean up.”

Dog thinks, “I don’t think I spilled the milk. I didn’t mean to. If I did, I’m sorry.”

Seven different beings, seven different perspectives on the exact same scenario.

No situation is the same for any two people (or pets). It’s all about our own unique perspective. And it’s hard to escape from our own perspective. It’s as much a part of us as our fingerprints or eye color or personality. Sometimes more so.

My example involved a spilt glass of milk – an ordinary, daily occurrence in some households.

Imagine how perspective can skew real life issues: relationships, friendships, love and loss.

Often during these occasions perspective is magnified – at a time (quite honestly) when we’d benefit

from viewing the world through lenses other than our own.

So the next time someone spills milk on your kitchen table, remember, it’s all about perspective. And no one in the room (even a crowded one) sees things exactly the same. Your thoughts and words determine your reality, and no one else’s, but they can provide a positive or negative impact, depending on how

your react, what you say and the perspective you choose.

Simple concept. Big outcomes.

Think. Speak. Create.

YMCA hosts 4th annual Girls Hockey Day In partnership with the Chicago Wolves and local female coaches and players, the Elmhurst YMCA hosted its 4th Annual “Girls Hockey Day” on Monday, Dec. 23, when a group of 36 girls ages 5-12 attended a one-hour clinic held at the Elmhurst Y’s outdoor ice rink. Participants spanned from girls who were brand new to the ice to those that play for the local Chiefs Hockey Club.

Led by Coach Abbie McDonald of the Glen Ellyn Admirals Hockey Club, the skaters were divided by skill level and focused on skating techniques, balance, passing and stick handling.

Additional instructors on the ice included Olivia Quick, York High

School junior who plays for Madison Capitals AAA U19 girls team; Madison Matrasko, Glenbard East High School junior who plays for Team Illinois AAA U16 girls team; Tim Weaver, Chicago Wolves sr. mgr. of partnerships; and, Brandon Yunker, Chicago Wolves account representative.

“Skates,” the Chicago Wolves mascot cheered on the participants from the glass during the clinic.

IC Catholic Prep wrestling team comes up big in multiple events Knights win Plano tournament, fare well at Abe’s Rumble and tough Dvorak events

The IC Catholic Prep wrestling team mixed it up with the best of the best over the holiday break.

The Knights were part of the large Abe’s Rumble dual-team event in Springfield.

“This is the fourth year of the tournament and it’s up to 60 teams now,” IC Catholic Prep coach Kevin Sliva explained. “It’s one of the largest dual-team tournaments in the country.

There are 12 matches going on at the same time. It’s craziness but it’s a lot of fun for the kids to get to be with their teammates at something like this.”

The Knights finished 26th out of 60 teams in the Class 1A tournament held at the Bank of Springfield Center. “That was good,” said Sliva. “We were missing three starters and we gave up four matches to forfeits. We finished 20 places higher than we did last year when we were 44th out of 55 teams.”

IC Catholic Prep was able to jam in nine dual meets during the twoday event. The Knights scored wins over Wilmington and Warrensburg-Latham and lost to Benton and Stillman Valley. “We were in one of the toughest pools,” said Sliva.

IC Catholic Prep through its strength of pool earned a spot in the 32-team championship bracket where it lost to Tolono-Unity, the No. 2-ranked team in the state. “They are even better than advertised,” he said.

“They made it to the championship and beat Coal City, which finished second in the state in Class 2A last year.”

The Knights then lost to Seneca before coming back to win a pair against Anna-Jonesboro and Toledo Cumberland.

In the 25th-place match, the Knights lost to Heyworth, which finished fourth in the state in Class 1A last year.

“I was happy with our performance,” said Sliva. “We had a kid out of town, another out with the flu and another injured.”

On the individual side, sophomore Nick Renteria went 9-0 at 120 and 126 pounds. Senior Joe Scott was 7-2 at 195, while sophomore Jadon Mims was 7-2 at 220 pounds.

“Nick was ranked No. 2 in one of the polls at 120,” said Sliva. “He does everything. He wins. He’s really good and he never stops moving.

He’s an exciting kid to watch and is very strong for his weight class.

any fear. They are really focused and have had a lot of success because of that. Jadon is starting to turn it on of late. Joe and Jadon both played football and came to us a little later.”

Sliva has seen major progress throughout the program. “It’s absolutely been night and day compared to last year,” he said. “We still have a lot of growing to do, but overall I am really happy with everybody.”

Earlier, IC Catholic Prep won the Plano tournament and had five individual champions in the nearly 20team field.

Freshman Saul Trejo won the title at 106 at Plano. Freshman Michael

DiBenedetto won at 113. Renteria was a titlist at 126, while sophomore Brandon Navarro won at 160, as did Isaiah Gonzalez at 285. Gonzalez also is a freshman.

“Nick beat a ranked kid in the semifinals and upset a kid who is a senior and a three-time state finalist and former state champion in the finals,” Sliva explained.

Renteria was voted co-most outstanding wrestler in the tournament and won a wrestler of the week award in an online poll on the Illinois Matmen website.

“That was pretty cool,” said Sliva of the online honor. “He was up

against five or six other kids from big schools.”

At the prestigious Dvorak tournament by Rockford, IC Catholic Prep finished in 16th place out of 35 teams.

“That is awesome for that tournament,” said Sliva, noting the Dvorak does not separate teams or wrestlers by state classification.

The Knights had five medalists at Dvorak with Trejo taking fourth at 106. Renteria was eighth at 120.

Scott finished seventh at 195, while Mims was sixth at 220 and Gonzalez took sixth at 285.

“That’s our third year in the tour-

nament and we only had one medalist before this year there,” Sliva said.

“We also were only one of four Class 1A schools in the tournament. It was huge what we did there. We finished ahead of seven other state-ranked schools and five were state-ranked Class 3A schools. Things are looking way up for us. We are building this program brick by brick the last four years. It’s finally all coming to fruition, but we know we still have a lot of work to do. Probably the most impressive thing this year is we probably have three or four kids who have a shot at being on the top of the podium in their weight class.”

York boys basketball team shows defensive chops at own tournament

Dukes finish second in loaded 32-team Jack Tosh field

While the York boys basketball team finished second in the loaded 32-team Jack Tosh Holiday Classic it recently hosted, the bigger story is the defensive effort the team put forth.

York held opponents to an average of 43.8 points in the five games it played on its home floor over the holidays, including holding Mid-Suburban League foes Rolling Meadows and Schaumburg in the 30s with both teams sporting high-caliber standout players.

York downed Meadows 46-39 in the Tosh quarters and defeated Schaumburg 49-33 in the semifinals before losing to Bolingbrook 57-45 in the title game.

“Rolling Meadows has a player, Max Christie, that has been offered

by all the college basketball powerhouse teams,” York coach Vince Doran explained. “We held him to 16 points, which is outstanding. He’s been offered by Duke and averaged close to 30 points in the tournament.

He is a first-round NBA prospect in my opinion. He’s probably the best high-school kid I have coached against. He’s very special and is a tough player. Schaumburg’s Chris Hodges is going to Wisconsin and we held him to two points and one shot attempt for the game. I am elated with our defensive performance throughout the tournament. Our players have really improved on that end of the floor.”

Doran said shots didn’t fall early on against Bolingbrook in the finale.

“We didn’t make shots early and it is very tough to chase a team like that,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier with our performance. It was a tremendous tournament for our team. We struggled offensively at times with shooting the ball, but defense is what put us in the championship game.”

Nate Shockey and Jeff Grace were

named to the Tosh all-tournament team. Shockey averaged 23.0 points in the tournament, hitting on 31.2 percent of his 3-point attempts (15 of 48). He also averaged 4.6 rebounds and had 10 assists and nine steals.

Grace averaged 8.4 points in the tournament and shot .548 from the field, while adding 3.4 rebounds per game to go with eight assists and a team-best 13 steals.

“Nate was able to create and Jeffrey has been really good,” said Doran. “I thought Nick Hesch, who is a sophomore, had a good tournament overall, as well.”

York moved to 12-2 with its 4-1 showing at Jack Tosh. The Dukes also are off to a 2-0 start in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play.

Doran lauded the continued support the tournament receives. “It was probably the most well-attended tournament we have had at York,” he said. “We had great crowds throughout the tournament, especially with the championship game. It was a lot of fun. I think we have clearly

“I am really proud of how much pride our team plays with as a host for this tournament,” Doran said.

York hosted crosstown neighbor IC Catholic Prep earlier this week and heads to Downers Grove North Friday for a WSC Silver game.

“I think we knew this group could be really good and they are,” said Doran. “They have exceeded expectations on the defensive end. This team is probably every bit as good defensively as last year. The bottom line is we have to step up when it comes to shooting the ball better. We are not shooting the ball like we can.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team finishes strong at York Trojans close out Jack Tosh with win against Providence

A 2-2 record at the recent Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York doesn’t tell the true story for the Timothy Christian boys basketball team.

“I thought the boys competed quite well,” said Timothy coach Scott Plaisier.

The Trojans defeated Lake Forest and Providence and lost to eventual tournament champion Bolingbrook and St. Patrick.

Timothy wrapped up the tournament with a 60-56 win over Providence Catholic. Timothy trailed 22-17 after the first quarter, but sued a 17-11 second-quarter run to go up 34-33 at intermission. Timothy trailed 48-45 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored its foes 15-8 in the final stanza to earn the win.

Timothy shot a strong 53 percent from the field. Sophomore Ben VanderWal led the way with 17 points. Josh Harris and Matt Owens each had 14 points, while AJ Vos had nine points. Timothy shot 12-for-17 from the free-throw line.

VanderWal finished with a double-double with those 17 points and 10 rebounds. Harris had six assists, while VanderWal also had two steals.

“Lake Forest was a nice team,” said Plaisier. “We were able to make a few plays there and get that win. We took Bolingbrook down to the wire and had our chances at the end. We missed a few opportunities but we battled with them every possession, which was nice to see.

We had a little letdown against St. Pat’s, but that’s a 10-3 basketball team that can attack off the dribble.

I was happy to see that we responded with the win against Providence.

I’m happy with 2-2. You get some good learning experiences with these games. For the most part, we were pretty consistent defensively.

We are starting to find our ID with that and have been able to string together a few stops in a row. A big concern of ours was rebounding the ball and we rebounded fairly well in all four games.”

Limiting turnovers also has been top of mind for the Trojans. “We have to take care of the basketball as well, even with the pressure Bolingbrook put on us, I thought we did a pretty good job taking care of the ball,” said Plaisier.

Plaisier saw a plethora of strong individual contributions throughout the event. “Josh Harris played well all four games as did Ben VanderWal, our sophomore,” he said.

“AJ Vos had two very good games in our first two games of the tournament. Matt Owens had a very good game against Bolingbrook and we have been getting very good contributions from Marquis Johnson coming off the bench with good, quality, consistent minutes.”

Timothy was 10-3 overall and 3-0 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division games heading into January.

“I am happy with the progress,” Plaisier said. “We still need to shore up some things, but I am very happy as a whole with where the boys are at.”

Timothy returns to conference action Friday against Elmwood Park and then heads to Michigan Saturday for a game against Covenant Christian in Grand Rapids.

IC boys basketball team strong coming out of holidays Knights 12-3 through first 15 games

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball coach TJ Tyrrell has plenty to be excited about these days.

In addition to his team going 3-1 at its own co-hosted IC Catholic Prep-Westmont Christmas tournament, the Knights came out of the gates strong after that with a 57-49 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win at Wheaton St. Francis.

The win pushed the Knights to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in MSC Blue play.

IC Catholic Prep led 15-9 after the first quarter and 26-21 at halftime.

The Knights extended the lead to 3830 after three quarters.

The big story in this game was

Chauncey Lee, who exploded for 30 points, including a 12-for-15 effort from the foul line. Dom Gaudio added 12 points (1 three-pointer), while Michael Hilgart had seven points, including one 3-pointer.

Looking back at the holiday tournament, Tyrrell noted there were plenty of positives. “We saw a lot of good things from the guys,” the coach said.

“Our only loss was to Evergreen Park. They were hot shooting. They shot 16-for-34 from three and hit 60 percent from 2. It was a hot night for them and it was a high-scoring game.

It was good to see that when needed, we can keep that pace and get the score into the 80s.”

Tyrrell was thrilled with how his team responded after the Evergreen Park loss against Chicago Perspectives MSA. “It was a nice bounceback win,” said Tyrrell. “They are

very athletic and applied a lot of pressure. It was good to see that style of play. There is a good chance we will see that in the playoffs. We played this game at Elmhurst College on the bigger college court. It was our third game in the tournament and it was on the college floor. Our guys did a good job of embracing the challenge and did a good job pulling out the win.”

The Knights wrapped up the tournament with a win against Burbank Reavis. “We did a nice job of finishing against Reavis,” said Tyrrell.

“Zach Jordan was outstanding. He’s an offensive threat for us. He did very well shooting the ball. He creates opportunities with his ability to finish.”

Tyrrell also was effusive in his praise of Lee and senior Danny Cronin. “Chauncey Lee is a floor leader for us and a catalyst in what we do,” he said. “He handles the pressure very well. I’m proud of him. Danny

Cronin is a senior who is coming around. He played in five games for us last year after sitting out after transferring from Fenwick. He sees the ball coming off the rim much better this year. He’s getting offensive boards and finishing around the rim and getting to the free-throw line. I am very pleased with his progress.

He gives us strength inside.”

Gaudio, Tyrrell noted, provides a steadying influence on the team.

“Dom is very steady and is very smart with the basketball,” Tyrrell said. “He’s also aggressive with the basketball, which is nice to see.”

Tyrrell said another key factor in the team’s strong play has been the emergence of Hilgart. “Michael Hilgart doesn’t make the stat leader sheet,” he said. “Against Reavis, he guarded their best guy. He does a good job of boxing out. He has a high basketball IQ and helps with the

needs of the team.”

Danny Roberto and Norvis Landon also have been key cogs for Tyrrell this season. “We’re getting good bench play from Danny Roberto,” he said. “He stepped up, especially when Johnny Falduto went down with an injury. He’s out there giving us energy along with Norvice Landon.”

Tyrrell said the strong start to the season has been an enjoyable one.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “The boys are having fun and are playing very hard. They have built good chemistry. To be where we are right now, I am very proud. We lost to Evergreen Park and Chicago Christian on the road and they are a tough conference team, and we lost to Fenwick by five points. We are playing very well right now. We’re looking forward to the challenges of the second half.”

Girls basketball team learns plenty at State Farm Classic

While the IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team went 1-3 at the State Farm Classic in the Bloomington-Normal area over the holidays, it walked away with plenty of knowledge to put to good use the second half of the season.

The Knights opened play with a loss to Sherrard, a school located south of the Moline-Davenport-Rock Island area. “It was one of those games where you look at it and you could tell both teams had been off for

a few days,” IC Catholic Prep coach Todd Fisher noted. “Both teams were trying to get back into basketball mode. It was a four-point game in the fourth quarter. It was one of those things where we got shots off, but you could tell we had been off from the holiday and things were not in rhythm like when we left the Reavis tournament (which IC Catholic Prep won before the holidays). The good thing was our second half was better than the first half. We were in it until the end. It was a two-possession game until we had to start fouling.”

Fisher was pleased with how his team responded in a win against St. Thomas-More out of Champaign.

“We played a lot better. We had a good first quarter and a good third quarter,” he said. “We outscored

them in three of the four quarters. It was a nice bounce-back game. We played better and knocked down shots and were very good at the foul line. This was a good team win.”

The Knights then lost to Camp Point Central, located northeast of Quincy near the Iowa state line.

“This was a game we would like to quickly forget,” Fisher said. “It was not our best showing of the year by any stretch of the imagination. We didn’t play well. We had a hard time scoring and we turned the ball over a lot. Camp Point was in a 2-3 zone and they were aggressive. We had a lot of unforced turnovers.”

IC Catholic Prep then dropped a game to Rockford Lutheran. “That was a better showing,” said Fisher.

The old saying of defense wins championships held true for the Timothy Christian girls basketball team.

The Trojans were strong on the defensive front once again in a 61-37 win over Rosary in the championship game of the Lisle Cage Classic Christmas tournament.

Timothy went 4-0 at Lisle to win the tournament. The Trojans led 12-4 after one quarter against Rosary and 31-15 at halftime. An 18-9 fourth-quarter run put the game away for Timothy.

“The kids did a great job,” Timothy coach Jill Groenewold said. “We were very consistent with our defensive effort. We held Chicago Latin

to 28 percent shooting and Walther to about 30 percent and Rosary was around 20 percent shooting. The defensive intensity was present for sure. The intensity was good and we did not back down from challenges.

We had a lot of help-side rotation and we rebounded the ball well. We didn’t give up a lot of second chances.”

Hannah Schuringa led the Trojans with 25 points against Rosary on 11 of 15 shooting. Freshman Maddie Drye added 12 points, while Sureya Alex had seven points. Drye made a pair of 3-pointers in the game. Timothy also shot 9-for-12 from the freethrow line.

In addition to her 25 points, Schuringa had 10 rebounds. Grace Roland, another freshman on the varsity, had four assists. Schuringa had seven steals to go with three assists.

“A lot of people keyed on Hannah and she certainly does her part, but you can’t just stop Hannah on our team,” said Groenewold. “Others have stepped up for us as well and that is great to see.”

Groenwold said rebounding strength has come from throughout the roster. “Our posts are very good with rebounding,” she said. “But our guards do a good job as well with boxing out and coming out with a few rebounds. Hannah is there along with Grace and Greta (Hoogstra), and the rest board well, too.”

Schuringa was named the tournament MVP and was part of the all-tournament team at Lisle. After the Lisle tournament, Schuringa was averaging a team-best 16.9 points per game to go with 5.8 rebounds per game.

“Hannah does so many things well,” said Groenewold. “She plays defense against the opposing team’s toughest players. She’s our leading scorer every night and can dribble through the press if we need to her to help out there.”

Timothy moved to 12-4 overall after the tournament win. The Trojans were 5-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play with a

wasn’t because of effort. I liked our effort, enthusiasm and energy. It was another game where we were right there. It was a one-possession game.

It was a loss, but I liked the way we played. I thought we ended on a positive note there. It was a good experience for us playing in that tournament. This will help us moving forward. We learned a lot about ourselves in the tournament, what we need to focus on in practice and what principles to have going forward. It also was good to get away and be together as a team. We had the opportunity to play different teams and it was good to see other teams and different styles of play throughout the state. Even though our record didn’t show it, it was a good tournament for us and it will help us move forward.”

Fisher was pleased with how Alia Johnson played in the tournament.

“Alia has been an important part of

the offense,” he said. “We have been able to isolate her and get her into situations and matchups where she can attack the basket. She can mix it up, too. She can hit the outside shots and crash the boards. Her and Claire (Wagner) probably are our two leading rebounders. She’s good with second-chance points, which are big.

Alia does a good job with that. We are doing a better job of recognizing the importance of shooting better. We have left some points out there and if we can keep getting better, we can get some easy baskets.”

IC Catholic Prep was 11-7 overall through its first 18 games. The Knights played Rosary and York earlier this week and head to Elgin tonight for a game against St. Edward before heading to Chicago Heights this coming Monday for a non-conference game against Marian Catholic.

Elmhurst takes part in 2020 U.S. Census Special committee formed to promote local participation

“Everyone Counts Elmhurst” is the City of Elmhurst Complete Count Committee’s theme for the 2020 United States Census and profiles of a dozen individuals representing disparate demographic groups are being developed to promote local participation.

The Committee just received $15,000 in grant monies from the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and another $7,500 as part of the City’s 2020 Operating Budget to develop marketing materials, purchase pro-

motional giveaways and staff community events.

Mandated by the U.S. Constitution every 10 years, the Decennial Census provides the federal government with population data used to appropriate some $700 billion annually in state, county and local funding ($180 per person) for public education, transportation infrastructure and healthcare programs. In addition, the number of seats proportioned to the State of Illinois’ Congressional delegation is dependent on those census figures.

Elmhurst Hospital nurse turns tragedy into comfort for homeless Operating room staff at Elmhurst Hospital recently found a way to turn surgical tray wraps into items of comfort for the homeless in Chicago.

In an effort led by Audrey Less, CRNA, a nurse anesthetist at Elmhurst Hospital who began the project to take her mind off a family tragedy, the team collected surgical tray wraps—waterproof fabric that wraps trays of sterilized surgical instruments.

Less’ cousin, 24-year-old Dayna Less, a pharmacy resident, was one of three people killed in a shooting at Mercy Hospital in Chicago on Nov. 19, 2018.

Audrey Less’ mother and aunt sewed the collected wraps into mats and blankets. On Dec. 27, they donated 170 mats and blankets to Southwest Chicago Homeless Services. Any leftover wraps that were too small were donated to the Hinsdale Humane Society.

“Our nature as health professionals is to help people. That doesn’t stop when we leave the hospital,” Less said. “All of my coworkers were so excited. It

turned out even better than I thought.”

Within seven days of Less’s callout to her coworkers, the OR staff had collected enough surgical tray wraps to create the sizeable donation.

“There’s a real entrepreneurial opportunity within hospitals to look at how we can use discarded, non-medical waste to benefit those in the community,” she said. “It would be great to scale up and help as many people as possible with the resources available to us.”

Now, she would like to make it an annual event. As the collection of wraps grows, she says she could use distribution ideas as well as volunteers to help sew and sort the wraps. Anyone interested in helping may contact Less at threadsofcareproject@gmail.com.

“The people working at the hospital aren’t done helping when you walk out the door,” Less said. “It was an opportunity for us to be not only healthy driven, but human driven.”

Looking back at 2019, the biggest disaster to impact our state was the devastating river flooding that occurred in more than 33 counties, impacting 2.1 million residents.
