School Board Capsules Here’s what’s happening at District 205

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on Jan. 22 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting. There were no public comments.

• Board elects to increase staff The board voted unanimously to authorize a staffing increase of 4.1 FTE (full-time equivalent) positions at a cost of about $372,000.

The positions that will be added for the 2019-20 school year include three 3.0 FTE elementary assistant principals to add a .5 assistant principal at Edison, Emerson, Field, Fischer, Jackson and Jefferson schools. Additionally, a .5 FTE will be added for an instructional coach at Madison Early Childhood Center, increasing that position from .5 to 1.0. An addition of .6 FTE will be made for a district fine arts coordinator.

According to district superintendent David Moyer, the addition of assistant principals will provide

support for principals with evaluations and supervision. The added support will also allow principals to spend more times in classrooms.

Board member Shannon Ebner stated before the vote that it’s important for principals to spend time in classrooms and interact with teachers on a daily basis.

Moyer noted that William Riddle, the performing arts department chair at York High School, is retiring at the end of the current school year. His successor in that position will also serve in the added position of district fine arts coordinator.

The .6 FTE addition will cover the course load of that position.

Moyer said the district fine arts coordinator will bring more continuity to music education at the district’s grade levels. The coordinator will also help with planning for new and renovated auditoriums in the district.

• Money transferred to Debt Service Fund The board also voted unanimously to approve a resolution to transfer about $360,000 from the district’s Operations and Maintenance Funds to its Debt Service Fund for the purpose of paying debt certificates for the 2019 fiscal year.

Moyer described the transfer as an annual occurrence. He said the debt certificates are related to the district administrative center and the stadium at York High School.

Board members also voted unanimously to approve a resolution expressing official intent regarding certain capital expenditures to be reimbursed from proceeds of an obligation to be issued by the district.

Board member Chris Blum explained that the district would use cash on hand to pay for some expenses regarding projects related to the recently approved referendum.

Blum said that by using cash on hand and paying itself back at a later time, the district could save money on interest payments and delay the issuance of bonds. According to information provided by the district, the district is planning to delay the first bond issue related to the recent referendum to save money on interest payments. The delay will not change the construction schedule in any way. Some of the planning and design costs will be paid out of the district’s fund balance and subsequently reimbursed to the district by bond funds.

• McCormick Foundation grant aids civic education The board also approved a $3,000 donation from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation to York’s social science department.

The donation will be used to pursue and implement projects related to improving civic education and closing achievement gaps.

That donation is renewable, so York’s social science department may continue to receive future funding from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on Feb. 12.

• Donation for Sprint ‘Hotspot’ devices approved The board also approved the District 205 Foundation’s donation of $2,650 for the purchase of Sprint Mobile Hotspot devices for student use as part of the Sprint ConnectEd Program. The program provides free home Internet access to eligible students with no Internet access at home. The devices allow a student’s computer or Chromebook

• Funds of $95,000 donated for Hawthorne playground The board also voted to approve a donation of $95,000 from the Hawthorne School PTA to pay for a new playground. Additionally, the board approved a donation of $2,000 from the Elmhurst Youth Baseball program to pay for baseball equipment for York’s baseball program.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Criminal damage to property Jan. 18-Jan. 19 Police said a complainant related that she checked the men’s washroom before her shift began at a gas station in the 600 block of W. North and there was no evidence of damage.

Later she checked the washroom and found the urinal wall divider was broken off of the wall. Damage is estimated at $100.

Domestic battery, domestic incident Jan. 23 Police said that subsequent to a call for a hit-and-run near North and Route 83 at around 7:46 a.m., a victim stated her husband followed her from her parent’s residence in Lombard and attempted to run her off the roadway.

The victim struck a box truck during the incident. The suspect was later located by Addison Police Department and placed under arrest.

The suspect, a 31-year-old Lombard man, was charged with one count of domestic battery and one count of aggravated assault.

Jan. 21 A 51-year-old Northlake man was charged with domestic battery in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 8:42 a.m. A victim told police that her ex-boyfriend came to the hotel room and tried to enter her room. The victim tried to push the door closed but the suspect reportedly grabbed her around the neck, leaving some red marks on her neck.

Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic incident involving a telephone threat in the 100 block of Bonnie Brae at around 6:59 p.m., and that a party involved may use a firearm. Upon arrival, the occupant of the home, the suspect, reportedly refused to exit and provided false information stating she was in Bellwood. Elmhurst Police used crisis negotiators and the suspect eventually exited the home safely. The suspect was taken into custody on a warrant out of DuPage County.

The warrant was confirmed as valid. No firearm was found at the scene. The suspect was issued a new court date and released. Investigation of the domestic battery and telephone threat is ongoing.

Jan. 19 Police said a complainant in the 500 block of W. Grand told police at around 10:50 a.m. that that following an argument, the suspect

slapped him in the face and he pushed her away. The suspect related the complainant grabbed her by the throat. Due to conflicting stories, no visible injuries and neither party wishing to pursue charges, no arrests were made.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Jan. 22 Nayeli J. Estrada, 33, of Sterling, Ill., was charged with DUI, trespassing on railroad property and improper lane usage, while Jose I. Estrada, 25, of Melrose Park, was issue a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol subsequent to a call of a vehicle stuck on the Union Pacific railroad tracks in the 100 block of W. Park at around 1:45 a.m.

Jan. 19 James Cuffe, 30, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI in the 600 block of W. Crockett at around 6:03 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle with the engine running and parked in the roadway, Cuffe was passed out behind the wheel and found to be DUI. Police said that while an officer was on patrol near York and Church at around 1:32 a.m., Eric W. Larmon, 20, of Evergreen Park, threw a snowball at the officer’s patrol vehicle. According to police, Larmon was found to be under the age of 21 and had consumed alcohol.

Police said he provided a breath sample and also was found to be in possession of a fraudulent Michigan driver’s license containing his name, photograph and a false date of birth. He was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor and possession of a false ID. Frank B. Rapport, 62, of Oak Lawn, was issued a citation for public intoxication near Spring and the Canadian National railroad tracks at around 10:39 p.m. Police said officers responded to the report of a highly intoxicated subject who was yelling at people. According to police, Rapport was located stumbling in the middle of Spring Road, was slurring his words, and was unable to care for himself.

Marquiez Y.D. Sanders, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a report of a loud party in the 200 block of N. West at around 12:34 a.m.

Jan. 18 Amy Koczor, 25, of Elmhurst, was charged with two counts of DUI, improper turn and failure to signal when required subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and York at around 12:20 a.m. Police said Koczor failed field tests and was placed under arrest for DUI. At the police station, Koczor provided a breath sample of a 0.179, according to police.

Jan. 17 Sydni Gizynski, 19, of Highland, Ind., and Alexis Ramos, 18, of Merrillville, Ind., were each issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 100 block of Van Buren at around 11:54 p.m.

Fugitive from justice Jan. 19 Josiah Yeaman, 45, of Wheaton, was charged with being a fugitive of justice in the 100 block of W. First at around 1:11 p.m. Police said a reporting officer observed Yeaman, who was yelling at people and appeared intoxicated. A check of his information revealed an

extraditable warrant out of Jackson County, Ind., according to police.

Harassment, threats Oct. 18-Jan. 22 A victim in the 400 block of S. York told police that he has been receiving numerous harassing phone calls from the suspect between the above dates. The suspect admitted to making the phone calls, stating his friends told him who to call and what to say. Further investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Jan. 24 Zaire Parker, 22, of Maywood, was charged with possession of cannabis, improper passing of an emergency vehicle and driving while license suspended subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 12:53 a.m.

Jan. 23 Brandon Lam, 21, of Addison, was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, driving while license suspended, no rear registration plate, loud muffler/exhaust and no insurance, while Sergio Amparan, 25, of Villa Park, a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, subsequent to a traffic stop in the 700 block of W. North at around 8:29 p.m. Police said officers located 240 grams of cannabis inside the vehicle. Lam also had three warrants out of DuPage County, according to police.

Jarrett Matthews, 27, of Chicago—a passenger in a vehicle—was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Highview at around 11:54 a.m.

Jan. 22 Steven Y. Morales-Rivera, 21, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:20 a.m.

Jan. 20 Kennedy A. Harris, 22, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 2:56 a.m.

Jan. 17 Juan Claudio, 21, of Cicero, was charged with possession of cannabis and no front license plate, while Kevin Robles, 20, of Cicero, was charged with possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 9:40 p.m.

Danielle Dicarlo, 23, of Arlington Heights, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 200 block of N. York at around 4:20 p.m.

Police said a reporting officer noticed Dicarlo staggering in the above area. The officer contacted Dicarlo to check on her well-being.

During the subsequent investigation, it was learned Dicarlo had recently ingested heroin, according to police. Medics were called to the scene and Dicarlo was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. Police said she had in her possession a controlled substance as well as drug paraphernalia.

Suspicious circumstances Jan. 20 Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital for the report of a sexual assault at around 9:01 p.m. It was determined that the incident occurred in Chicago. The Chicago Police Department was advised of the incident.

An investigation is pending.

Jan. 18 Police said a complainant in the 100 block of E. First located a black Walther pistol, three boxes of .25 caliber ammunition, one box of .38 SPL ammunition and two pistols holsters in his mother’s apartment in Chicago. He brought them into the police station to be destroyed. All of the property was entered into evidence for destruction.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Jan. 23 David Fultz, 25, of Maywood; Michael Goodwin, 25, of Maywood; and Christie Lopez, 25, of Naperville, were charged with attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools in the 100 block of Columbia at around 12:39 a.m. Police said that while a reporting officer was on patrol, the officer located a suspicious vehicle near the above location.

The reporting officer made contact with the occupants of the vehicle who were found to be planning to burglarize a store in the 500 block of N. York, according to police. Police said Lopez also had three active arrest warrants.

Theft was reported in the 700 block of Poplar at around 6:11 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed the mail from their front porch mailbox. The victim observed footwear impressions in the snow on the front walkway.

Jan. 22 Attempted residential burglary was reported in the 400 block of Arlington at around 8:22 p.m. A witness reports seeing two suspects reportedly attempt to steal an air compressor from an unoccupied house which is in the process of being renovated. The witness observed the two suspects running from the house and fleeing the area in a red Dodge pickup truck with front driver side damage. The victim responded to the scene and determined no tools or equipment were missing.

Jan. 20 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:31 p.m.

Police said officers responded for a retail theft in progress. The suspects allegedly exited the west doors of the store with a shopping cart containing $836 worth of stolen Nike apparel.

The suspects abandoned the cart full of merchandise, entered a green Honda Accord and fled the scene northbound on Route 83. The first suspect was described as a black male approximately 50 years old, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with blue writing on the front, black pants, a red hat and glasses. The second suspect was described as a black male approximately 25 years old wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and grey pants.

EWAN offers help during government shutdown Last week, President Donald Trump announced a short-term deal to reopen the government after a 35-day shutdown. Although government workers are returning to their jobs, the impact of the shutdown could have a lingering financial impact on many of them.

The Elmhurst Walk-in Assistance Network (EWAN) is concerned about the impact the government shutdown may be having on local families and wants them to know that EWAN is a place they can come to for help while they get back on their feet.

EWAN is an organization that provides financial assistance to families in the Elmhurst community who are going through a difficult time. In situations where families or individuals experience a job loss, a cutback in hours, divorce, disability, or other sudden, unforeseen circumstances that leave them unable to pay a bill, EWAN can offer assistance with rent, utilities, car repair, prescriptions, and gas. They can also coordinate access to local food pantries and clothes closets.

“The government shut-down has been a big concern for us,” said EWAN Board President Jennifer Morrissey. “We do not want to see families struggle to get through. EWAN can help.”

EWAN serves Elmhurst residents, families with children in Elmhurst schools, or registered members of partnering Elmhurst churches. Cullerton, Pritzker focus on veterans homes State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is praising Gov. JB Pritzker’s move to protect Illinois’ veterans.

On Friday, Jan. 18, Pritzker issued an executive order to examine and get to the bottom of the Legionnaires’ crisis in the state’s veterans homes.

Pritzker’s administration is directing the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs to issue a report in 120 days that will provide a comprehensive review of weaknesses,

strengths and opportunities for improvement of policies, protocols and procedures related to ensuring the health and safety of residents and employees at Illinois veterans homes.

“This report will help move us in the right direction. It’s about time that we get a comprehensive review of the Legionnaires’ crisis in our state veterans’ homes,” Cullerton said. “The last administration focused on playing political games

instead of providing real answers to help alleviate this catastrophe. I look forward to reviewing the report and coming up with long-term solutions to protect the health and safety of our veterans for generations to come.”

Cullerton served in the Army from 1990 to 1993 as an infantryman and has been a staunch advocate for Illinois’ veterans, especially those at the Quincy home greatly impacted by continuous cases of

Legionnaires’ disease during the last governor’s watch.

“Our nation’s heroes have survived foreign conflict zones – the greatest danger they face should not be living in a state facility,” Cullerton said. “We need to work together in a bipartisan manner to take care of our veterans, like they took care of us.”

Congressman Raja named Chair of Economic, Consumer Policy Subcommittee Last week, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-8th Dist.) was named Chairman of the House Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy.

Now through March 2, A Walk Through My Mind, a solo show featuring original paintings, drawings and sculpture by EAG member, Gregory Albin Stall, is on view in the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild Gallery inside the Elmhurst Art Museum.

Stall, a member of the National Audubon Society, has always had a love for the natural world, especially birds. Thus, it is no surprise that wildlife and birds feature prominently in Stall’s work.

“Through my art, I enjoy showing the public the importance of the natural resource of the world’s wildlife,” he explained.

In addition to birds and fish, other artworks displayed feature mammals, such as bunnies, chipmunks and a Canadian lynx. Stall chose to paint the lynx “because it is a majestic predator with very few enemies.”

“I encourage the public to hunt wildlife with a camera and not a firearm,” he said.

“With approximately 50 artworks ranging in price from $100 - $300, Greg’s show provides a wonderful opportunity to acquire original artworks,” commented EAG President Charlene Lee-Freislinger. “Proceeds benefit three ways, supporting the artist, the EAG and the Elmhurst Art Museum.”

About the local team Led by Dr. Dean Jensen of Elmhurst College and a group of dedicated parent mentors, all four Club teams competed in the CyberPatriot X State Round held Jan. 12-13, demonstrating impressive teamwork, critical thinking skills, and technical

knowledge key to a successful career in cybersecurity.

The varsity team’s performance earned it Illinois’ 1st Place Award in the top division, for the fourth consecutive year. They earned a spot in the Platinum Semifinal Round to be held next month. Varsity team members are Sophie Ward, Will Phillips, Justin Pajak, Nathan Moskal, JJ Hennessy and Joseph Black.

In addition, a team comprised of Jack Riekse, Peter Quas, Brian Niederman and Martina Lepicki earned a 1st Place in Illinois Award in the

Following the Semifinal Round, top Platinum teams will advance to the CyberPatriot XI National Finals Competition in Baltimore, Md., in April.

Jeffrey Panko, artistic director of the concert series will accompany Kilburn on the piano.

“Maya brings a skilled presence to the stage and performs with a mature sound well beyond her years,” said Kimberly Diamond of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra.

Kilburn has played the violin since age 4. She currently studies with Mimi Zweig at the Indiana University Jacobs School String Academy.

She is a recent winner of the 2019 Muncie Symphony Young Artist Competition, where she performed the 3rd movement of the Tchaikovsky

Evans will perform with headliners Randy Brecker and Mike Stern along with the Elmhurst College Jazz Band on Thursday, Feb 21 at about 4:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, Feb. 24 to cap off the event.

Elmhurst College’s 52nd annual Jazz Festival begins Feb. 21 York Big Band.

On Sunday, Feb. 24, more Big Band sounds and combo performances will perform prior to the featured performance by Randy Brecker, Bill Evans and Mike Stern, performing with the Elmhurst College Jazz Band.

Other Festival headliners include pianist Michael Abene, baritone saxophonist Denis DiBlasio, tenor saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, drummer Dennis Mackrel, bassist Rufus Reid, trumpeter Bobby Shew, the Patrick Williams Big Band and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

The Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, one of the oldest and best collegiate jazz festivals in the country, is back this year with its usual all-star lineup of the industry’s most notable performing artists, as well as some of the country’s leading college bands.

Each February, the best college jazz bands in the country converge on the Elmhurst campus for three days of performances and education.

The bands take turns performing for some of the greatest names in professional jazz today, who offer critiques and award a variety of honors.

The professionals cap off each night of the Festival with a rousing performance of their own.

York boys basketball team completes conference sweep of Lyons Township Dukes reach title game of Wheaton-Warrenville South MLK tournament

The York boys basketball team continued its West Suburban Conference Silver Division roll with a recent victory against Lyons Township.

The win moved York to 20-3 overall and 6-1 in WSC Silver play, keeping the Dukes in a first-place tie with Oak-Park River Forest atop the league.

Dukes coach Vince Doran pointed to his squad’s strong defense as being a major catalyst in the win. “I think our defense has been strong most of the year,” he said. “I thought we really moved well and recognized.

It might have been our best recognition game of the year in terms of knowing where their shooters were at and identifying and always knowing what is in your area. I thought we were a little better than in earlier games.”

It was York’s second conference win against Lyons Township. York won by four points earlier in the season at LT. Nick Kosich and John Milling were two key cogs for York in the win. “Nick played really well offensively,” said Doran. “John Milling had his best rebounding game against Lyons. He had something like five offensive rebounds. He really gave us a number of second-chance opportunities. He was huge for the team. John went in there and mixed it up and came up with key offensive rebounds in the first half and that allowed us to extend our lead.”

York was playing its third game of the week after playing two last Monday at the Wheaton-Warrenville South Martin Luther King tournament.

“It’s a little bit different for us with two on Monday and then playing Friday,” said Doran. “We gave them Tuesday off and practiced pretty light on Wednesday and Thursday. It’s a grind, but our guys are excited to play games. They love to play games and we play a lot of them.”

Doran said York is quite happy to be in the thick of a conference race.

“It’s going to be an interesting race,” he said. “We have to take care of the games in front of us. We can’t think about what Oak Park is doing or what anybody else is doing. We have to worry about ourselves and take each game as a challenge and compete in the game in front of us and

not worry about what anybody else is doing. This is exciting. The games become more and more meaningful as you keep winning. I told them if you keep taking care of business, the stage gets a little bigger and bigger.

The challenge is not to look ahead.

That’s the challenge for the coaches, to keep the guys focused on each opponent.”

Earlier at the Wheaton-South MLK event, York kicked things off with a 62-24 win over Schaumburg Christian. York led 12-8 after the first quarter and 28-11 at halftime.

York held Schaumburg Christian to 13 second-half points.

Erik Cohn led the Dukes with 19 points, while Jake Brandolino had 11 points. Kosich, Mike Pedote and Milo Mann each had six points. Cohn hit 5 of 7 three-point attempts, while Pedote and Kosich each made two 3s.

York shot 12 of 18 from the 3-point line (66.7 percent) and 54.8 percent from the field. Jeff Grace added six assists, while Kosich and Grace each had four steals. York forced 18 turnovers and held Schaumburg Christian to 30 percent shooting.

York then recorded a 47-39 win over Plainfield Central. York led 11-8 after the first quarter and 23-17 at halftime. Plainfield East cut it to 3130 after three quarters, but York outscored Plainfield 16-9 in the fourth quarter.

Sam Walsh led the Dukes with 14 points, while Cohn had 12 points.

Milling had nine points and Kosich added eight points. Milling made three 3-pointers, while Cohn had two. Kosich was 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. Walsh added nine rebounds, while Cohn had five. Grace had five assists and three steals.

York also was a 49-36 winner against host Wheaton-South. York trailed 6-5 after the first quarter, but led 13-8 at halftime. The Dukes outscored Wheaton-South 20-15 in the third quarter and 16-13 in the fourth quarter.

Kosich led the Dukes with 18 points, while Walsh had 13 points.

Nate Shockey finished with seven points, as did Cohn.

Kosich hit two 3-pointers and made 8 of 11 free-throw attempts.

Shockey was 5-for-5 from the foul line as York shot 72.7 percent from the line (16 of 22). Walsh added five rebounds, while Kosich, Shockey and Cohn each had four rebounds.

Milling and Grace each had three assists. Kosich finished with five steals.

York had 13 steals as a team.

While the IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team did not come out on the winning end in a pair of recent games, coach TJ Tyrrell came away impressed with the progress of his team.

The Knights lost recent contests to Aurora Christian and Chicago Christian.

“Between both games we feel we are in a good place with our de-

fense,” he said. “We have been doing a nice job there with our manto-man and our zones. It’s good to see the guys figure these things out at this point in the season.”

IC Catholic Prep led late in the game against Aurora Christian.

“The Aurora Christian game we thought that was one of our best of the season even though we came out on the losing end,” said Tyrrell.

“The kids did an awesome job controlling the possession time. They really controlled the tempo and put us in a good position to win the game. We were winning most of the fourth quarter and then Aurora Christian broke away at the end. I was really impressed with

the team basketball mentality. The boys did an awesome job running the offense and letting opportunities come to them instead of guys trying to create on their own. That was very encouraging.”

Tyrrell noted the Knights ran into a physical Chicago Christian team.

“We played on the road at Chicago Christian. They are physical and we struggled offensively in that game,” he said.

The Knights have been without senior co-captain Mike Carpanzano of late due to injury. “That’s been tough,” said Tyrrell. “Mike Carpanzano has been a catalyst in terms of his intensity, toughness and positive mindset. He’s one of

our captains and one of two seniors we have. He has been doing a great job. It’s unfortunate that he’s been injured.”

The Knights played crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian over the weekend in IC Catholic Prep’s annual Coaches vs. Cancer event.

“It’s a community fundraising charity event,” Tyrrell noted. “It’s a great opportunity to raise money for cancer research and awareness, plus you have two great schools and two great communities supporting a great event.”

IC Catholic Prep was 8-11 overall and 1-5 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play through late last week.

The Knights were scheduled to play York on Wednesday, weather permitting.

“We have some big tests ahead of us,” said Tyrrell. “The schedule doesn’t get any easier. Depending on the weather, we’re supposed to play at York, which is having a great season. Friday we go to Riverside-Brookfield and they are having an outstanding season. We still have Benet Academy and a few other conference games left.

It’s all good for us. We wanted a tougher schedule and that’s what we have right now. We’re playing teams ranked in the top 25 in the area. That gives us the opportunity to play strong competition.”

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team went 2-1 during a recent three-game stretch.

The Trojans wrapped up the run with a 38-34 win at IC Catholic Prep in a battle of crosstown neighbors. It was part of IC Catholic Prep’s annual Coaches vs. Cancer day on campus.

After a 10-10 first quarter, the Tro-

jans led 20-19 at halftime and outscored the Knights 7-4 in the third quarter. Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth.

Sophomore Josh Harris led the Trojans with 12 points, while Matt Owens had nine points and AJ Vos had seven points. Harris and Owens each had two 3-pointers. Timothy shot 35 percent from the field.

Junior Danardo Jones added seven rebounds, while Vos had six rebounds. Harris had five rebounds.

Vos added four assists, while Owens had three. Vos and Jones each blocked three shots.

The Trojans also dropped a 68-43 game to Aurora Christian as part of Timothy Christian’s Martin Luther King tournament.

Aurora Christian led 17-7 after the first quarter and 34-24 at halftime.

Aurora Christian outscored Timothy 17-8 in the third quarter.

Owens led the Trojans with 10 points, while Harris had eight points and Jack Baldridge finished with five points. Timothy shot 44 percent from the field. Zach Orange and Baldridge each made a 3-pointer.

Harris finished with eight rebounds, while Owens had five as-

sists. Vos had three assists and Harris had two steals.

Timothy also recorded a 65-49 Metro Suburban Conference Red Division win against Ridgewood. Timothy led 18-10 after the first quarter and 32-21 at halftime. The Trojans outscored Ridgewood 19-13 in the third quarter.

Harris hit for 19 points in the contest, while Baldridge had 13 points and Owens had 12 points. Jones chipped in eight points. Timothy shot 26-for-47 from the field in the game (55 percent). Baldridge canned three 3-ponters, while Harris had two.

Jones finished with eight rebounds, while Harris and Owens each had six rebounds. Owens finished with seven assists, Harris had three assists and three steals. Jones blocked two shots.

Timothy returns to action Friday at home against Fenton in MSC Red Division action and then heads to Addison to face Addison Trail in a non-conference game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Trojans face Wheaton Academy in West Chicago next Tuesday in another conference game.

Kosich exploded for 25 points in the game. He shot 6-for-11 from the 3-point line and was 9-for-16 from the field overall. Shockey added 14 points, while Cohn had 11 points.

York hit on 11 of 21 three-point attempts (52.4 percent) and shot 49 percent from the field overall.

Walsh pulled in 13 rebounds, while Grace had four assists. Walsh had two steals.

York outscored its four opponents at Wheaton-South 220-163. Kosich averaged 14.2 points in the tournament, while Cohn was at 12.2 points, Shockey at 10.5 points and Walsh at 8.8 points. Kosich made 11 of 25 three-point attempts (44 percent), while Cohn was 9 for 19 (47.4 percent).

Timothy’s win against IC Catholic Prep put it at 19-5 overall. The Trojans are 8-2 in MSC Red play and still are in contention for a share of the Red Division title.

Timothy was scheduled to play a makeup conference game Monday against Guerin Prep and another MSC Red game against Wheaton Academy on Tuesday. If Timothy won those two games, it likely would play for a three-way share of the conference title tonight at home against conference-leader Aurora Christian, which has one loss, that coming in overtime against Timothy at home earlier in the season. Chicago Christian also has two losses. Chicago Christian beat Timothy twice this season.

“Thursday (tonight) is a biggie,” said Baumbach. “If we win out, there likely would be a three-way tie. It should be a good one. We beat them in overtime the first time in a great game.”

Lailah Waddell also won the vault individual title at Niles North with a 9.4 and Megan Cronin won the bars crown at Niles North with a 9.05.

“We are learning that new skills are not necessarily good skills and that sometimes practicing what you have is more important than learning something different just because it’s flashy,” said York coach Anthony Colant.

Colant noted York has excelled on bars this season. “We now have all five girls with advanced high superior dismounts and releases,” he said.

Colant said Cronin and Sydney Hill, in particular, have stepped things up of late. “Megan and Sydney both have done a great job of pulling themselves together for the end of the season and have really stepped up their work ethic to try and make it to state this year,” he said.

York girls basketball The York girls basketball team scored a recent 62-54 win over Proviso West in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action.

The win moved the Dukes to 16-8 overall and 6-3 in WSC Silver activities.

Sydney Molis continued to be a key offensive contributor for the Dukes. She had 19 points, 17 of them coming in the first half. She had 12 points in the first quarter, helping York score 26 points out of the gates in the opening frame. Molis finished with three 3-pointers.

Sara Krissinger also had 19 points.

She had eight in the first half and then scored 10 points in the fourth quarter alone.

Carly Schwartz hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points. Kaitlyn Kjome added five points. Sydney Fuglsang had five points, all coming in the fourth quarter.

York led 26-15 after the first quarter and 39-26 at halftime. Proviso West cut the lead to 43-41 after three quarters, but York outscored the Panters 19-13 in the fourth.
