FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
Late Sunday, Illinois State Police reported that a North Carolina man took the wrong way on Interstate 290, which caused him to crash into another vehicle right at the York Chester Gordon Road exit of the expressway. The incident reportedly happened on Sunday, Dec. 30 at about 4:30 a.m. Early state police reports said Chester Gordon, 24, of North Carolina, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-290 when he struck the other vehicle. Gordon as well as the driver and passenger in the other car were all taken to the hospital. At that time, the crash remained under investigation and charges were pending its outcome. Berlin’s office charges suspect Then, on Monday, Dec. 31, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced that bond had been set for Gordon who is accused of causing the head-on collision, while driving the wrong way on I-290 that seriously injured two individuals in an oncoming vehicle. Gordon appeared at a bond hearing on Monday in front of Judge Robert Miller, who set bond at $1 million with 10% to apply. According to Berlin’s investigators, it is alleged that at approximately 4:15 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018, Gordon was driving his vehicle in the wrong direction westbound on I-290 near York Road. It is further alleged that while driving, Gordon crashed his car head-on into an eastbound vehicle, severely injuring the two occupants. Following the crash, Gordon and the victims of the crash were transported
to the hospital. Both victims required surgery to treat their injuries. Gordon was arrested and taken into custody at that time. “Like all alleged DUI cases, the case against Mr. Gordon was 100%
avoidable,” Berlin said. “Thankfully, both victims are expected to survive their injuries. As I have said numerous times in the past and is particularly relevant with today being New Year’s Eve, if you have been drinking,
do not drive. It is a very simple idea but unfortunately, in far too many instances, people feel they are all right to drive when they are not and tragedy follows.” Gordon’s next court appearance is
