District 205 holds special meeting about new superintendent Interviews firms; selects School Exec Connect to conduct search

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a special meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven Board members participated in the meeting. Six members attended in person, while Board member Karen Stuefen took part remotely.

The special meeting was held to interview search firms to assist in finding a replacement for District 205 Superintendent David Moyer, who recently accepted a superintendent’s position in a district in New York. Moyer, who has been District 205’s superintendent since 2015, will officially begin his new position on July 1. He did not participate in the Jan. 20 Board meeting.

The Board heard presentations from three search firms during the Jan. 20 meeting. The representatives from each firm included current and former school superintendents. After hearing each presentation, Board members discussed the three proposals and decided to utilize the services of School Exec Connect, which is based in Oak Park.

Dr. Linda Yonke, a former principal of York High School, was one of School Exec Connect’s representatives at the Jan. 20 Board meeting.

Yonke, who was York’s principal from 1998 to 2004, later became the superintendent of New Trier Township High School District 203. She retired from that position in 2017.

It can be lengthy, feel a little messy and at times appear disorganized while the seven of us with varying education, backgrounds, professions and values work toward solutions to best serve both our school community and our greater community, who sacrificially supports our schools.”

Caforio then noted that Board member Jim Collins has taken part in two searches for a new superintendent during his time on the Board, while Board member Margaret Harrell and Stuefen have both been involved in one search.

Caforio proceeded to conclude her statement: “All of us bring our experiences as longtime community members, parents of students and diverse professional backgrounds to this effort, and as we work through the search process, we are committed to ongoing regular communication and updates for our community,” she said.

“There’s no question that we all care deeply about our schools, and are looking forward to a renewed sense of community as we begin this process tonight.”

burg-based Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) delivered the first presentation of the meeting. School Exec Connect gave the second presentation, while BWP and Associates of Libertyville provided the third.

Dr. Timothy Shimp, the current superintendent of Yorkville Community Unit School District 115, joined Yonke in giving School Exec Connect’s presentation at the Jan. 20 meeting. Giving a timeline of

the firm’s proposed plan, Yonke and Shimp said School Exec Connect would develop a profile for a new superintendent. The firm would then seek Board approval of that profile.

The search process, which would include community engagement, would lead the Board to interview a slate of candidates. The firm proposed that the Board could narrow that field of candidates down to three finalists. School Exec Con-

nect recommended that the finalists each give a presentation to the Board before taking part in another formal interview.

Yonke and Shimp stated that School Exec Connect’s consulting fee for the search would be $20,500.

Nooses found hanging at York football field

Police continue to investigate possible hate crime

As of Monday, Jan. 25, the Elmhurst Police Department and Elmhurst School District 205 were still investigating an incident that was reported on Sunday, Jan. 17 at the York Community High School outdoor football field.

A press release from the City of Elmhurst and from Police Chief Michael Ruth explained that sometime between 12 noon and 2:30 p.m., when a group of adults gathered

to play an informal soccer game at the field, they discovered two rope nooses hanging from the top of the metal bleachers. The adults removed the ropes themselves and took them away with the intent to give them to school administrators later.

School administrators were contacted on Jan. 18 and informed Elmhurst police of the incident. Police said both ropes had messages affixed to them with tape, one reading, “Let them play!” while the other read, “Hear us now! Please!”

Ruth said Elmhurst police evidence technicians processed the scene at the football field. He added that District 205 had been working cooperatively with police during the investigation.

Police presence was increased at the York campus and surrounding neighborhoods last week, as the investigation proceeded. Additional security cameras are expected to be

installed at the high school, including at the stadium as further precaution.

The incident remains under active investigation as a possible hate crime to determine the motive and identify the suspect(s).

“The City of Elmhurst has no tolerance for symbols of hatred, oppression and violence,” said Elmhurst Police Chief Ruth. “One of

our City’s core services is to provide safety for the Elmhurst residents and the community.”

Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to call the Elmhurst Police Department at (630) 530-3050.

District 205 relayed this information in a special message to parents and other stakeholders last week after the incident took place.

This is a photo of the farmhouse at Bucholz Farm taken in 1885. The Bucholz family was among the early settlers of the Elmhurst area, and there are heirs living in the area to this day. Among the artifacts at the Elmhurst History Museum’s new exhibit, “Together We Cannot Fail: Overcoming the Great Depression,” there is a recently-donated uniform, ID card and coin changer that belonged to Elmhurst resident Carl Bucholz. According to the museum, Carl worked at a ticket booth during the 1933-34 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago.

Salt Creek Primary School in Elmhurst and Stella May Swartz Elementary School in Oakbrook Terrace have received Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Grants to fund the creation of butterfly gardens at each school, State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) announced.

“Creating interactive, educational spaces at our schools will teach children the importance of taking care of their environment,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Butterfly gardens will provide students with a hands-on learning opportunity about many aspects of nature including insects, pollination and native plants in Illinois.”

The Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant program is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Illinois Conservation Fund (ICF) to support the development or enhancement of wildlife habitat on the school grounds or other public places.

Funding for the program is provided through donations to the ICF. More than $329,000 in Illinois

The Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI) is warning Illinois taxpayers about a new wave of COVID-19-related scams as the agency delivers the second round of Economic Impact Payments.

In the last several months, IRS-CI has seen a variety of Economic Impact Payment (EIP) scams and other financial schemes designed to steal money and personal information from taxpayers.

Criminals are taking advantage of the second round of Economic Impact Payments – as well as the approaching filing season – to trick honest taxpayers out of their hardearned money.

“Criminals will look for any opportunity to take what they are not entitled to and this is no exception,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Tamera Cantu, of IRS Criminal Investigation, Chicago Field Office.

“This payment is meant to help those that are struggling to get by as a result of the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. Be wary of any phone calls, emails, or text messages asking for your personal information or offering a deal that seems too good to be true,” said Cantu.

prevention, investigation and prosecution of criminal conduct related to natural and man-made disasters and other emergencies.

Taxpayers can also report fraud or theft of their Economic Impact Payments to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).

Reports can be made online at TIPS. TIGTA.GOV. Taxpayers who receive unsolicited emails or social media attempts to gather information that appear to be

from either the IRS or an organization closely linked to the IRS, should forward the message to phishing@ irs.gov. Taxpayers are encouraged not to engage potential scammers online or on the phone.

Elmhurst Princesses deliver the goods The Elmhurst Princesses dad-daughter group, which boasts 600 members, recently gathered with their families – a total of 80 volunteers – to help pack meal boxes at the “Feed My Starving Children location in Schaumburg.

“Due to the pandemic, we have not held an inperson event since last February’s winter campout in Michigan, up until a few weeks ago when some of our members volunteered at the Feed My Starving Children distribution center and warehouse,” said one Princess’s Dad, who was unable to attend the recent

event due to his family’s own COVID-19 issues.

Family members worked in two shifts, adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols and social distancing guidelines. The second shift alone packed 79 boxes, which provides just over 17,000 meals, or enough to feed 46 needy children three meals a day for more than a year.

The decades-old Elmhurst Princesses program promotes strong bonds between fathers and daughters through shared activities such as campouts, monthly meetings and community outings.

Common COVID-19 scams include: • Text messages asking taxpayers to disclose bank account information under the guise of receiving the $1,200 Economic Impact Payments.

• Phishing schemes using email, letters and social media messages with key words such as “Coronavirus,” “COVID-19,” and “stimulus” in varying ways. These communications are blasted to large numbers of people and aim to access personally identifying information and financial account information (including account numbers and passwords).

• The organized and unofficial sale of fake at-home COVID-19 test kits (as well as offers to sell fake cures, vaccines, pills, and professional medical advice regarding unproven COVID-19 treatments).

• Fake donation requests for individuals, groups and areas heavily affected by the disease.

• Bogus opportunities to invest in companies developing COVID-19 vaccines while promising that the “company” will dramatically increase in value as a result.

Understand how IRS communicates According to the IRS, although criminals are constantly changing their tactics, taxpayers can help protect themselves by acting as the first line of defense. The best way to avoid falling victim to a scam is knowing how the IRS communicates with taxpayers. The IRS does not send unsolicited texts or emails. The IRS does not call people with threats of jail or lawsuits, nor does it demand tax payments or gift cards.

COVID-19 drive-thru testing in Wheaton to close after Jan. 29 Villa Park location remains open for up to 1,000 tests per day

DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) will close the COVID-19 communitybased drive-thru testing site located at the DuPage County Complex in Wheaton at the end of the month, with the last scheduled day set for Friday, Jan. 29.

The COVID-19 drive-thru testing site at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park will remain open with the capacity to provide up to 1,000 tests per day.

The community-based drive-thru testing site in Wheaton is closing to provide additional support to DCHD’s COVID-19 mass vaccination efforts. Over the last few months, the number of testing facilities in DuPage has increased. Thus, residents have various options across the county for their viral testing needs, including doctor’s offices, urgent care facilities, pharmacies, and mobile sites which offer nasal swab and saliva tests.

DCHD opened the community-based testing site to meet the significant demand for COVID-19 testing from our communities in June 2020. Since then, staff at the site have collected 56,009 samples, as of Jan. 15.

Details on testing at the Odeum COVID-19 testing site will continue to be available at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park. The site is open Sunday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone can get tested, and no appointment, doctor referral, or insurance is required. Visitors are encouraged to pre-register at testdirectly.com to help reduce wait times. Please note, each individual being tested must create an account, and staff members will register anyone who does not have an email or who has not already created an account.

expenses not to exceed $2,500. If the selected candidate resigns or is dismissed for any reason within 24 months of the starting date, School Exec Connect would conduct a new search at no cost.

Yonke and Shimp added that their timeline would lead to the Board selecting a final candidate in April or May. They also said that the goal would be to finish the search before the new Board is seated. The three seats currently occupied by Caforio, Collins and Harrell will expire this year. The election takes place on April 6.

Board members raise pros and cons As Board members discussed the three proposals near the end of the meeting, Board member Courtenae Trautmann stated that she was disappointed in a statement from BWP representatives that there will be a limited number of candidates because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Caforio said she values the district’s relationship with BWP—the firm that conducted the district’s superintendent search that led to Moyer’s hiring.

Caforio added, however, that she gave an edge to School Exec Connect over BWP in the choice to select the firm that will conduct the upcoming search.

Collins said he was encouraged by School Exec Connect’s large network. He added that he liked the firm’s proposal of having each of the finalists give a presentation to the Board.

School Exec Connect chosen At the end of the discussion, the Board members reached a consensus on choosing School Exec Connect to conduct the search for the district’s next superintendent. Caforio said she would work to put the firm’s proposal on the agenda for the Board’s next regular meeting, which took place earlier this week (Jan. 26).

On Jan. 14, Caforio sent a message informing the community that Moyer would be leaving the district.

Farewell to Moyer “It is with candor and openness that I share with you that after six years of service to D205, Superintendent Dr. David Moyer has accepted a position out of state for the 2021-2022 school year,” stated Caforio in the message to the community. “The Board of Education was recently made aware of his intentions to further his career elsewhere.

We will be working closely with Dr. Moyer and the D205 administrative team in order to ensure a smooth transition as he completes the school year here in D205 before beginning his new role on July 1.

“We are grateful for the dedication Dr. Moyer has exhibited these last six years to implement a vision of continuous growth and improvement for all of our students and staff,” added Caforio. “His educational vision will be missed.”

Moyer will be the next superintendent of schools of the Arlington Central School District. The district office is located in LaGrangeville, New York.

A statement on the district’s website noted that Moyer was selected for his new position following a national search. He was chosen from a field of 40 applicants, the statement noted.

The statement from the Arlington Central School District also included comments from Moyer.

“People are obviously proud of their schools, and the sense of community has been obvious from the outset,” said Moyer in the statement. “This is the perfect professional and personal opportunity for me at the perfect time.”

In August 2018, the Board learned that Moyer had applied for a superintendent’s position in another state. Moyer subsequently withdrew his application for that position.

Attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking Jan. 17 Police said that officers responded to the 500 block of N. Emory at around 11:12 a.m. for the report of an attempted vehicular hijacking. The victim stated he was approached by two unknown suspects who produced a handgun and demanded the victim’s vehicle.

A struggle ensued and the victim was able to gain control of the gun. Both suspects fled the area in a silver Toyota RAV4. The suspects were described as black males, both in their early 20s, both wearing all black clothing and surgical masks. The weapon was determined to be a replica gun.

Criminal trespassing, criminal damage Jan. 16 Sana Akhoon, 23, of Glendale Heights, was charged with injuring property in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 4:01 p.m. A complainant told police that Akhoon became involved in a physical altercation which caused damage to a ceramic light fixture, according to police. The parties involved paid their bill and left the establishment in an unknown direction. Police said Akhoon also left the scene prior to officers’ arrival but was located nearby and placed under arrest.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance Jan. 14 A victim in the 300 block of Sunnyside told police at around 4:58 p.m. that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect threw a plastic fence cap which struck her. The suspect and witness related that the incident was a verbal argument and nothing physical occurred. An investigation is pending.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol Jan. 20 Vanessa M. Castillo, 25, of Lombard, was charged with DUI and operating a vehicle in an unsafe condition near Roosevelt and York at around 2:24 a.m.

Jan. 18 Azara Pillatsch, 42, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and driving while license revoked in the 100 block of W. North at around

Richard Washington, 36, of Chicago, was charged with transportation of open alcohol, possession of cannabis by the driver, driving while license revoked, improper display of registration and no insurance subsequent to at traffic stop near Lake and N. Route 83 at around 8:12 p.m.

Jan. 17 Fabian Duenas, 29, of Streamwood, was charged with DUI, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near E. First and N. York at around 2:46 a.m.

Carlos Fuentes Rocha, 36, of Aurora, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance in the 300 block of E. Butterfield at around 8:41 p.m.

Police said officers responded to an area near W. North and N. Route 83 at around 11:49 a.m. for the report of a possible intoxicated driver. Officers located the suspected vehicle crashed into a light pole. The reporting officer made contact with the suspect, who was found to be driving under the influence and in possession of a controlled substance. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the station. Charges are pending lab results.

Jan. 16 David Galvez-Romero, 28, of Berwyn, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage subsequent to a report of a multi-vehicle crash in the 100 block of E. Lake at around 2:23 a.m.

Yazmin Rojas-Rios, 20, of Woodridge, was charged DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near W. North and N. Shady at around 2:04 a.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Jan. 21 Kenny L. Glover, 27, of Maywood, was charged with possession of cannabis by the driver, driving while license suspended and tinted windows, while Kenji Glover, 26, of Maywood, was issued a citation for unlawful possession of cannabis by a passenger subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Clinton at around 1:49 a.m. Police said Javante M. Murray, 25, of Bolingbrook, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have two valid warrants from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Cory A. Warnicke, 23, of Glendale Heights, was issued citations for possession of cannabis by the driver and for no insurance, while Glenn A. Warnicke, 42, of Villa Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis by a passenger subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 1:35 a.m.

Suspect #1 was cited for improper lighting, more than one passenger on a graduated driver’s license, and possession of cannabis by the driver Suspect #2, a passenger in the vehicle, was cited for possession of cannabis and consumption of alcohol by a minor. Suspect #3 was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor. All three suspects were released to their parents.

Jan. 15 Julio Gonzalez-Guillen, 24, of Norridge, was charged with possession of open cannabis in a vehicle and one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Crown at around 8:26 p.m.

Jan. 14 Taevion Martin, 18, of Streamwood, was charged with possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle, no valid driver’s license and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Poplar at around 11:04 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances Jan. 19 An officer responded to the report of a suspicious circumstance /found property report in the 900 block of Riverside at around 11:51 a.m. The complainant located a Winchester 9mm Luger bullet on the ground in a vacant parking space. The bullet was placed into evidence for destruction.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Jan. 20 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 3:45 p.m. Police said an employee reported that two suspects— one described as an Hispanic male and the other described as an Hispanic female—exited the store with a basket full of liquor without paying for the merchandise. The suspects entered one of the suspect’s vehicles and left the area onto Butterfield Road.

Jan. 19 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 5:22 p.m.

A complainant told police that an unknown

suspect described as either a white male or Indian male between 30 and 35 years old entered the store, removed two bottles of tequila and two bottles of scotch and left the store without paying for the merchandise. The suspect was observed getting into a tan minivan and leaving the scene.

Jan. 16 Commercial burglary was reported at a store in the 400 block of N. York at around 1:30 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a commercial burglary alarm, officers found a broken glass door at the above location. A key holder responded to the scene and reviewed camera footage which showed three unknown suspects described as black males forcing entry into the business taking cigarettes, liquor bottles, lottery tickets and cash from the cash registers. This case is pending investigation.

Jan. 15 A vehicle was reported stolen from a store parking lot in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 10:40 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) took his white BMW 325i while it was parked in the lot. The complainant left the keys in his jacket which was hanging on an employee coat rack. The complainant later returned to find his keys were missing and his car was gone. This case is pending investigation.

Jan. 14 Theft was reported in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 3:09 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole his jacket and wallet containing his driver’s license, state identification, and a debit card which was later used in Willowbrook.

Jan. 13 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of N. Myrtle at around 3:33 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) used her personal information to open a Nicor Gas account for service at an address in Round Lake Beach. The victim contacted Nicor to report the fraud and cancelled the account. .

Jan. 11-Jan. 12 Theft was reported at a business in the 600 block of N. County Line. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed an empty 53-foot semitrailer that was docked behind the building sometime between the above dates.

Jan. 2-Jan. 4 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 400 block of W. Butterfield. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) cut the catalytic converter from a bus sometime between the above dates.

Sept. 19, 2020 Identity theft was reported in the 800 block of S. Hawthorne. A complainant told police she received a collection notice for a Verizon Wireless account she did not open. The complainant later learned an unknown suspect(s) used her information to purchase two smartphones.

Unemployment benefits identity theft Oct. 15, 2020-Jan. 19 Between the above dates, the Elmhurst Police Department reported 27 incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Eclipsing all other accomplishments was Ed’s deep dedication to Jesus, witnessed chiefly in his loving devotion to his wife and children and his decades-long service at First Baptist Church of Elmhurst (now Cityview Community Church). There, Ed served as Deacon, taught Sunday School, helped lead boys in Christian Service Brigade, and contributed in countless other ways. After retirement, his service also included missionary work with his wife Sandy at HCJB radio in Ecuador, and regular work at the local food pantry.

Even into his 90’s, Ed’s razor-sharp wit was always at the ready, charming caregivers and brightening every situation. And he was always ready to share his faith.

Ed is survived by his 10 treasured grandchildren: Kyle (Shawn) Russell, Amy Jo (Niko) Morales, Lauren Russell, Luke Ronne, Ethan Ronne, Grace Ronne, Emma Ronne, Ben Ronne, Will Ronne, and Larry Ronne – and two great grandchildren – Esther Russell and Ellie Russell.

He was laid to rest January 20, 2021 at Abraham Lincoln National Military Cemetery in Elwood, Ill., in a small service led by his dear friend, Air Force Chaplain General John Wendel.

Beloved wife of Marco for 36 years; loving mother of Fred and Adam Paoletti; proud grandmother of Nico, Frederick, Liam and Blake; fond sister of Sandra, Bernadette and Tammy; fond aunt to several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents Richard and Louise Buckley.

Cynthia was known for her perseverance while battling with health issues for many years. She will be remembered by her unwavering strength and positivity. The world has lost a truly beautiful person who was like a second mother to all.

Edward Ronne, 93 Edward Ronne, Chicago broadcaster and communications leader, died peacefully on January 19, 2021, at the age of 93. Born Norphin Edward Ronne on January 16, 1928 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Jorand and Gust Ronne, he would later go by his middle name. Loving husband to Sandra (nee Holt), Ed is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, half-brother Finn Espeland, numerous other relatives, and countless friends. Ed was preceded in death by Sandra, his parents, and by siblings Krist (Lebakken), Gordon, Emma (Carter), and Rev. Reuben Ronne.

In 1946, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as Chief Mechanic on F-80 Shooting Star fighter jets in the 1st Fighter Group, 27th Squadron at March Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged in 1949.

Ed found the love of his life in nursing-student Sandy Holt, and they married on June 15, 1956. They were together for 56 wonderful years, until Sandy’s death in 2012. The Elmhurst couple raised four beloved children: Brent (Suzanne) Ronne of Dewey, Brenda Ronne-Russell of Terre Haute, Ind., Eric (the late Amy) Ronne of Wheaton, and Oed Ronne of Beaverton, Ore. After earning his B.S. in Speech from Northwestern University, Ed worked as a radio personality for stations such as WNUR, WAIT, and Moody Bible Institute’s WMBI, which featured his popular “Music Room” series and the “Ranger Bill” show, starring Ed as Gray Wolf (listen online at archive.org/details/OTRR_Ranger_Bill_Singles.

As a broadcaster for WMBI, Ed also interviewed such luminaries as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Billy Graham, and the mayor of Seoul, Korea.

Ed later led communications for several organizations: Argonne Labs, the American Nuclear Society, and the Chicago Medical Society. He was also the first Director of Communications for Compassion International, traveling around the world to promote their cause. He helped produce the

Slices of life

When I wasn’t looking

It’s been nearly two months, and I still keep his phone charged. I check it each morning. We didn’t share the same thumbprint, but I knew his password, as he did mine.

It was like that between us. We shared almost everything.

I know taking his phone off the account would save me money, but somehow it doesn’t feel right quite yet – to disconnect him. It feels too much like disconnecting with him, and I’ll never be ready for that.

We always used to share a charging cord. Still do. I charge at night and then plug him in during the day.

Early this morning, sleep was elusive, as it often is right now. I went downstairs to check his phone and decided to bring it upstairs with me. I haven’t been able to peruse his phone, other than to check news notifications. So far, it’s felt too raw. Too painful.

But something about this morning was different; I clicked on the photos icon. And I scrolled through.

The last photo he took was of a piece of pumpkin pie that tasted especially good to him when he was in the hospital. It was dated Oct. 4. He passed away Nov. 16.

Ever since he got his first smartphone he’s been the family photographer. He relished in it.

Sometimes we giggled at his huge appetite for taking photos, but we went along with his wishes. He was so giddy and innocent and kid-like about it. We sometimes thought it was overboard, but we indulged him.

I’m so glad we did.

As I scrolled through, there were lots of photos of fun family times, at home and at the lake. There were lake views, holiday pics and restaurant photos, you know, the usual.

I knew he loved taking photos of us and over time I learned to smile patiently whenever we went to a restaurant, and he made a big to-do about getting up and taking my picture. In one of my favorites, I’m sitting at a table with a mirrored wall behind me so the photo features not only me, but his mirrored image holding the camera.

Of course he took photos of our granddaughter. In one video, he and I were at the fleet supply store; it must have been in the spring because they had baby chicks and ducks. The video starts out with

my face, full frame.

He narrates. “Here I am with Grammy at the store, and we found some baby chicks.” Then he pans to the metal bins holding the tiny birds. As he videoed, he encouraged our granddaughter to ask her mommy for a pet ducky.

It was all fun, of course. We had a lot of fun. I miss that. I miss that a lot. We were so darn cute together.

As I continued scrolling, there were other memories, moments in time, I didn’t expect to see.

He took photo, after photo, after photo – of me. Many of them were taken without my even knowing.

What I didn’t understand then, but do now, is when I wasn’t paying attention, when I wasn’t smiling or even looking at the camera, he was still capturing moments in time. He was still capturing me.

He took countless pictures of me sitting on the boat, staring at the water. Many don’t include my face, but the back of my head. He captured my profile at sunset. He caught me with my feet up, eyes closed and sunbathing. Whenever he had a moment and thought about his camera and it was just the two of us, he took a photo of me.

From my perspective, this demonstrates an undying, true and beautiful love. He could have taken a photo of the gorgeous sunset, or loons on the lake but he chose to focus his camera on me, much like he focused his life on me. Now, looking back, this sentiment is even more breathtakingly beautiful than a sunset could ever be.

He loved me even when I wasn’t looking. What more could a girl wish for or want than that?

I miss you, Thom. I treasure the photos you took. Thank you for doing that.

Roberto’s neighbors organize to oppose parking plans For years, the owners of Roberto’s Ristorante and Pizza have been buying up residential property off Spring Road and Eggleston to build two parking lots which would increase their parking capacity by approximately 57 new spaces.

On October 19, 2020, Roberto’s filed a Conditional Use Application with the City of Elmhurst requesting permits to allow zoning for two commercial parking lots in a residentially zoned area. In response to the proposed application, Elmhurst Neighbors United, an Illinois not-for profit corporation was formed.

Elmhurst Neighbors United (ENU) opposes the pervasive encroachment of commercial use into Elmhurst residential areas and aims to protect the safety of our children and the character of our neighborhood. We have garnered support from the community through our Facebook group and 690 signatures on a petition.

The Spring Road district already experiences severe drainage, flooding and traffic issues. This parking proposal would only exasperate these problems and infringe on our rights as residential property owners. We have several families with young children on Eggleston, so this proposal is also a concern for their safety.

The matter will go before the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission again on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.

Elmhurst History Museum Now through May 2, the Elmhurst History Museum is hosting an exhibit, “Together We Cannot Fail: Overcoming the Great Depression.” It is a look-back to one of the most difficult times in U.S. history through the many challenges faced and changes brought on by the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Created in-house by Museum staff, the exhibition sheds light on how Americans — both nationally and in Chicago-area suburbs like Elmhurst and others — faced down the country’s worst economic crisis.

Lizzadro Museum Now through January, a Special Exhibit is on display called “Re-carving the Past: The Art of Chinese Bronze and Jades.” The exhibition features 11 bronzes from the MacLean Collection and 16 Jade carvings from the Lizzadro Museum illustrating the enduring importance of antiquity in Chinese art and culture. Elmhurst has not been immune to the hardships. Crnkovich noted that EWAN’s rental assistance increased close to 200% in 2020 and the typical number of new clients in a year doubled. She fears people will be feeling the financial impact of the crisis long after the virus is gone.

“So far we have been able to handle the influx of requests due to the generosity of the Elmhurst community,” Crnkovich said. “It’s truly gratifying to see the people who are doing okay show such tremendous concern for those who are struggling.”

In early 1929, Chicago and the nation celebrated another prosperous year. Then came Black Thursday on Oct. 24 when a series of further crashes eventually ushered in the Great Depression, ravaging Chicagoans financially in the economic collapse and leaving a lasting imprint on the nation.

Now through May 2, Dominic A. Pacyga, Ph.D. and Emeritus Professor of History at Columbia College Chicago, is presenting an illustrated lecture exploring the impact of the Great Depression on the Chicago area. DCVB reports optimism rising across travel industry Marchetti: It is undeniable how important visitors are to the health of your business equated to $2.86 billion in revenues, with those hotel guests spending money in substantial ways: $800 million on eating and drinking; $744 million on transportation; $458 million on retail; and $372 million on entertainment. It is undeniable how important visitors are to the health of your business. In fact, hotel guests accounted for a whopping 35% of expenditures in eating/ drinking establishments and 26% of general merchandise and apparel expenditures.

Marchetti said DCVB has directed efforts toward areas that prioritize the health of local businesses and the return of guests to DuPage hotels. The DCVB’s $15,000 meeting incentives program, in a six-week reporting period in November and December, yielded more than 1,000 future room nights and an estimated economic impact of $1.69 million.

The DCVB’s marketing programs result in trackable conversion rates, with a seven-week $25,000 Expedia program yielding 8,370 room nights,

more than $700,000 in gross hotel revenue and 3.7 million impressions, according to Marchetti.

“DCVB has kept DuPage top of mind, with features running in AAA, CVENT, Chicago Style Weddings, and digital social media ads,” she said. “Efforts continue to promote DuPage as an ideal destination for road trips and future small meetings, weddings and events. Major

programs such as Dining at a Distance and #CelebrateLocal remain ongoing.

“There are challenges ahead— recovery is going to require investment, continued unification of DuPage’s voice and brand, and collective strategies among leadership.

Each DuPage organization plays an important role—and its own individualized pillar—as we move forward.

“I call upon our partners to remain engaged with DCVB, your local chamber, Choose DuPage, local and state elected officials, and the various county leadership organizations which help define DuPage’s appeal to a local and broader audience.

“DCVB will continue to collaborate and work in alignment, as efforts intensify to address business needs and economic priorities.”

Elmhurst Rotary announces new ‘Service Above Self’ Scholarship The Elmhurst Rotary Club has initiated the “Service Above Self” Scholarship, now available to an outstanding high school senior. The recipient will receive $4,000 for the first college year, renewable for three successive years for an overall total of $16,000.

“Judging will be based on the student’s commitment to helping others through volunteering, service projects and communitybased initiatives,” said Charlie Laliberte, Elmhurst Rotary

president. “Service Above Self is Rotary’s motto, so we want to encourage and reward a student who finds real joy in serving others.”

Applicants must be graduating this year (2021) from IC Catholic Prep, Timothy Christian or York Community high schools but need not be an Elmhurst resident.

Financial need will be considered.

According to a release shared by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI), Beth Marchetti, Executive Director of the DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau, recently reported that optimism is rising across the travel industry as Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines are more widely administered.

Her report included statistics from Destination Analysts, which stated that Americans’ openness to travel inspiration measures at 6.0 on a scale of 0-10, with excitement levels about travel in 2021 at 6.1. The percent of American travelers who believe COVID-19 vaccines are safe is a solid 68% with 61% reporting they will be getting vaccinated. The report said 56% of American travelers are more optimistic about being able to safely travel in the next six months due to vaccine availability.

WorkNet DuPage: The Year in Review Last week, WorkNet DuPage released its annual Year in Review: Unlocking Opportunity During Crisis.

During a program year unlike any other, DuPage County’s workNet center established itself as a bedrock of support during an unprecedented pandemic. By adapting to the urgent needs of both job seekers and local businesses, workNet DuPage played a crucial role mitigating the economic fallout.

Laid-off and furloughed workers turned to the Lisle-based center to participate in From Layoff to Launch, a first-of-its-kind communications program amongst workNet offices in the State of Illinois. Live weekly seminars covered everything from unemployment insurance, health care, career training, job search support, and rent assistance.

Businesses witnessed workNet DuPage expand from its traditional role providing workforce training grants and recruitment assistance. By distributing additional funding to small companies and nonprofits, numerous entities avoided layoffs and remained open. WorkNet DuPage saved nearly 700 jobs generating a total of $36.2 million in annual wages.

More than $2 million used for apprenticeships, partnerships Despite overwhelming, unforeseen disruptions, the center carried on with its primary mission: unlocking opportunities in the County’s fastest-growing industries. WorkNet DuPage awarded $2,611,641 to boost the skills of 521 job seekers mostly advancing careers in four key sectors: 42 percent of clients pursued information technology, followed by healthcare (12 percent), transportation, distribution, and logistics (11 percent), and manufacturing (10 percent). Successful job training graduates collectively earned more than $17.7 million in wages.

All year long, the center promoted the value of apprenticeships, most significantly, spearheading a public-private partnership to upskill regional Ford automotive technicians and combat the alarming rate of retirements among skilled diesel and auto mechanics.

WorkNet DuPage amplified its impact by developing key partnerships.

The center joined forces with the DuPage County Health Department to augment the county’s contact tracing efforts and create jobs for individuals who lost work due to the pandemic.

The center also collaborated with the DuPage County Community Services staff to offer qualified county residents rent assistance, removing potential barriers to job training. Additionally, the center strengthened alliances with organizations such as World Relief DuPage Aurora to provide job training opportunities for the community’s most vulnerable residents. As a result of the partnership, refugees and asylum seekers saw their wages increase by an average of 40 percent.

During an historic time, workNet DuPage’s unfaltering commitment to DuPage County communities continued unabated. By focusing on direct assistance to residents, new programming, and strategic partnerships, the center created momentum and established new tools to help job seekers and businesses navigate a post-pandemic economy.

More than 46,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses administered despite limited supply DuPage County leads the state in number of inoculations

As of Wednesday, Jan. 20, DuPage County leads the state with 1.39% of the population fully vaccinated.

More than 46,000 vaccines have been administered to DuPage County residents, and 12,949 persons have been fully vaccinated with two doses, according to COVID-19 vaccination data. As the number of individuals vaccinated in the Phase 1a category increases to a substantial level, DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) anticipated beginning the transition to Phase 1b starting Monday.

Based on the very limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine across the country and in DuPage County, we anticipate it may take approximate-

ly 12 weeks to vaccine the estimated 268,000 individuals in DuPage County who meet Phase 1b criteria.

Anyone who lives, works, or attends college/university in DuPage County can register for updates about where and when COVID-19 vaccine will be available at dupagehealth.org/covid19vaccine. Over the coming months, people will be able to access vaccine through a health care provider, retail pharmacies, the Health Department, and many other locations. As the vaccine supply increases, much more information will be available from all of these providers about vaccine scheduling.

Healthcare providers in DuPage County have made substantial

progress in administering vaccine received into the arms of Phase 1a healthcare personnel. DCHD is receiving and distributing an average total of 13,000 Pfizer and Moderna vaccines per week. The most significant factor in how many vaccines can be administered in DuPage County is the supply of vaccine available to us each week. The vaccine supply made available to DuPage County has varied from 10,075 to 23,925 each week.

“We recognize the sense of urgency to vaccinate our residents as quickly as possible. The Health Department team is working tirelessly seven days a week to increase vaccine accessibility and to ensure everyone who

wants the vaccine will get it,” stated Karen Ayala, executive director of DuPage County Health Department.

“The demand for vaccine currently exceeds the supply available to us which means it will take time to fully vaccinate those in DuPage County.

We ask for everyone to understand that we can only administer the vaccine that is available to us each week through both the Health Department and our network of partner providers in the community.”

The Health Department is working diligently with many different partners at all levels, including hospitals, healthcare providers, pharmacies, and community leaders to expand access to vaccine through numerous

sites across DuPage County. As vaccine supply increases over time and additional vaccination sites become available, the Health Department expects the rate of vaccination will increase and more information will be available about the specific locations people will be able to contact to schedule appointments for vaccine.

Furthermore, to provide additional support to the expansion of vaccination efforts in the County, the community-based drive-thru testing site in Wheaton will close at the end of this month. The last operating day is Friday, Jan. 29.

Education bill to revamp social studies classes Bill also puts heavier emphasis on computer science and computer literacy

Social studies classes in Illinois public schools are about to get a major overhaul, with more emphasis on black history and the contributions of other underrepresented groups to American culture.

In addition, within the next few years, all school districts in the state will be required to offer computer science courses and more instruction in computer literacy.

Those are just two of the major provisions of a 218-page education equity bill, House Bill 2170, that passed during the recent lame duck session of the General Assembly with the backing of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus.

Jennifer Kirmes, executive direc-

tor of teaching and learning at the Illinois State Board of Education, said in an interview that the agency has been working toward updating the state’s social studies standards for months.

“Over the summer, we convened a working group of educators and advocates and gave that group the task of reviewing the existing Illinois social science learning standards, in particular through the lenses of equity and social justice, and to ensure that the standards aligned with the statutory mandates to teach about the contributions of underrepresented groups like African Americans and LGBTQ Americans,” Kirmes said. “So really, what’s in the bill codifies work that we started several months ago, and are still under-

State Senator calls on young artists to enter state art contest ‘Art Surrounds Us’ theme of Lincoln-inspired competition

State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) is encouraging K-12 students to create and submit artwork for the annual art contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Illinois State Board of Education.

This year’s theme is “Art Surrounds Us.” “Creating artwork allows students to express themselves, be creative and inspire the people around them,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Parents, teachers and friends: Please encourage your young, talented artists to enter. I look forward to seeing the pieces of art submitted to this statewide contest.”

The contest includes four entry levels: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. A

panel of judges selects a winner and three runners-up in each entry level.

All winners and runners-up will have their work displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

One student’s work will be chosen by the judges as “Best in Show” and will be featured on a poster to celebrate the arts during Illinois Arts Education Week, which takes place March 15-19 this year.

Specifically, the bill calls on ISBE to adopt new standards by July 1 “that are inclusive and reflective of all individuals in this country.”

It also calls for establishing an “Inclusive American History Commission” to help the board develop the new standards. That 22-member commission will be charged with reviewing educational resources that teachers can use that “reflect the racial and ethnic diversity” of Illinois and the United States, providing guidance for educators on how to ensure that their class content is not biased in favor of certain cultures and providing guidance on how to identify resources for “non-dominant cultural narratives.”

The bill also calls on every elementary and high school to develop a curriculum that includes one unit of studying pre-enslavement black history. That unit will cover the period from 3,000 BCE to 1619, when the first enslaved Africans were brought to America. Black history units will also have to include the study of the reasons why black

Social studies programs in the United States have been criticized for years for putting too much emphasis on the white European origins of the original 13 colonies and the development of a predominantly white culture while paying only scant attention to the history of slavery or the contributions of people from other, non-European cultures.

“I cannot speak to what is happening in every district across Illinois and I think it’s hard to make any kind of sweeping statement about all of history education in Illinois,” Kirmes said. “Our position is that we want it to be well supported and well executed in every community.”

Kirmes said ISBE expects to have a draft of the new standards available for public comment in March.

The final standards will then be presented to the board for approval early in the summer.

In addition to revising social studies standards, the bill also tries to ensure greater access throughout the state to computer literacy programs and computer science education.

It calls on all districts to provide “developmentally appropriate opportunities” to gain computer literacy skills beginning in elementary school.

Also, starting in the 2022-23 academic year, students entering ninth grade will be required to take at least one course that provides “intensive instruction” in computer literacy. That could be a course that also meets other graduation requirements such as math or social studies.

Beginning in the 2023-24 academic year, all districts that operate

high schools will be required to offer at least one course in computer science, which is defined as “the study of computers and algorithms, including their principles, their hardware and software designs, their implementation, and their impact on society.”

It does not include the study of everyday uses of computers and applications such as keyboarding or accessing the internet.

ISBE does not currently have educational standards for computer science, Kirmes said, so those will have to be developed from scratch.

She said ISBE has already convened a group to begin drafting computer science standards and the agency expects those to be adopted this summer as well.

Other provisions of the bill call for changing the state’s high school graduation requirements so they are more closely aligned with college admission requirements at the University of Illinois. Starting in the 2024-25 academic year, students entering ninth grade will have to complete two years of laboratory science. And beginning in the 202829 school year, they will be required to complete two years of a foreign language.

In the area of higher education, the bill changes the funding formula for the AIM HIGH student aid program. Instead of splitting the cost of those grants evenly between universities and the state, schools where 49 percent or more of their undergraduate student body are eligible for federal Pell grants will only have to match 20 percent of their state allocation while schools where fewer than 49 percent of students qualify for Pell grants will have to match 60 percent of the state allocation.

The bill needs only a signature from Gov. JB Pritzker to become law.

About the artists Alisha B. Wormsley runs a new arts residency project in Pittsburgh, PA, for Black Mothers called Sibyl’s Shrine.

She is an interdisciplinary artist and

cultural producer. Her work is about collective memory and the synchronicity of time, specifically through the stories of women of color. Wormsley’s work has been honored and supported by a number of awards and grants.

Wormsley has an MFA in Film and Video from Bard College and was awarded the Postdoctoral Research fellowship in art at Carnegie Mellon University.

Ayanah Moor is a conceptual artist whose work explores blackness,

The exhibition references national, community, and grassroots organizations—like Moms 4 Housing—that advocate for affordable, dignified housing for all. There is Black Housing in the Future is inspired by Afro-Futurist artists and writers who affirm the visibility and well-being of Black communities across notions of space and time.

An artist activity video for youth will complement Wormsley and Moor’s artwork. Using everyday household items, the artists will guide viewers in the production of message-based posters, yard signs, and even kites to support communities’ voices.

High school sports restart outlook much brighter About-face by IDPH last week gives hope for local basketball and football teams

Late last week the Illinois Department of Public Health announced all COVID-19 regions of the state that reach Phase 4 mitigations can resume high school athletics competitions, including the much talked-about higher-risk sports of football and basketball.

As of last Friday, only two regions in the state had reached Phase 4 (East Central and Southern). The DuPage County region (Region 8), which encompasses York, IC Catholic Prep, Timothy Christian, Willowbrook, Addison Trail and Fenton, moved into Tier 2 or two steps away from Phase 4 (the next stop for Region

8 would be Tier 1 before reaching Phase 4).

According to an IDPH chart posted on the IHSA website, low-risk sports currently in Tier 2 can begin to play games within their conference and COVID region. Medium-risk sports can conduct practices and intra-team scrimmages, but no games. High-risk sports in Tier 2 are allowed to stage non-contact practices and trainings.

For the current winter IHSA season that has been on hold, girls badminton, boys swimming, cheer and dance, boys and girls bowling and girls gymnastics are all low-risk sports, while boys and girls basketball remains high-risk. The IHSA said all medium-risk sports will need seven practices before starting a competition schedule, while basketball will need 12 practices before starting competitions.

Of critical interest was the IHSA’s board meeting held earlier this week that was expected to lay out a com-

pletely revised competition schedule for the remainder of the school year, including what a truncated winter sports schedule will look like.

For Independent coverage area schools (all classified in Tier 2 as of Sunday morning), winter low-risk sports can begin practice immediately and will await competition start dates coming out of that IHSA board meeting. Basketball teams may start intra-team scrimmages immediately.

Spring and summer sports, the IHSA noted, for schools in the Tier 2 phrase were able to conduct contact days starting this past Monday. All contact days must be conducted under IDPH All Sports Policy based on risk level. This means football teams in the Independent coverage area were able to reconvene starting this week. Weight training may be conducted under Tier 2 mitigations as along as social distancing and masks are utilized.

Also of note in Phase 4, IDPH al-

lows for the return of tournaments, out-of-conference/league play, outof-state play and championship games for all low-risk sports. Any sports in the medium-level category can enjoy Phase 4 designation for outdoor sports and then Phase 3 for indoor sports, meaning intra-conference and COVID-region games allowed, plus intra-league play/meets.

High-risk sports (currently basketball in the winter, football in the spring) in Phase 4 can play against teams in their conference and COVID region only.

“This is certainly positive news, but we still have a long way to go until we get all of our student-athletes back to being active,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a release. “High school student-athletes are hurting from a mental, physical and emotional standpoint, so we hope this is the first step toward getting that back to some normalcy.”

Anderson said he anticipates the

IHSA board will set competition start dates for low-risk winter sports prior to the January 27 meeting (earlier this week).

“We all need to continue to take the mitigations seriously,” he said.

“Wear a mask. Socially distance.

We need to get these other regions to Tier 2 and not risk having others backslide.”

Football, boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys gymnastics and boys and girls water polo are part of the IHSA’s adjusted spring season. Those sports, as of now, are slated to begin official season practices on Feb. 15 with football games slated to start March 5 and all other spring sports scheduled to begin competitions on March 1.

Football remains a high-risk sport, while boys soccer, girls volleyball and water polo are classified as moderate risk, while boys gymnastics is the lone lower-risk sport in the spring lot.

Onward and upward for York senior Mickey Vreeland Running standout headed to Division I Bradley University

York senior Mickey Vreeland has made the most of his downtime during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I used a lot of time that the initial lockdown order gave us to connect with a variety of coaches to get on their radar (for college),” he said.

Bradley University was one of the colleges Vreeland was communicating with. “I had a pretty good senior season and that allowed me to get in a better position with the coach,” he said.

The end result was Vreeland signing a national letter of intent to run cross-country and track at the Division I school located in Peoria.

“I will be running cross country and track next year and I am very excited about it,” he said.

Vreeland, who finished fourth individually at the season-ending Class 3A sectional last fall and then took 12th individually at an unsanctioned de facto state meet in Chillicothe, said during the recruiting process he was able to connect with his future teammates. “I got to know a lot of my future teammates through a lot of Zoom calls and texting a lot of them,” he explained. “A lot of Bradley kids are from Illinois and I know some of them from having raced against them in high school, so they were pretty familiar.”

Vreeland noted Bradley made sense for him on multiple levels. “It’s nice that the school is in-state,” he said. “I like the distance. It’s a pretty good distance where it’s not too far and not too close to home. Bradley has great athletic and academic programs where I will have the opportunity to succeed. It’s a nice overall fit for me.”

Vreeland saw a lot of similarities between the York program and Bradley’s. “Bradley has won the past five Missouri Valley Conference championships,” he said. “They got a new coach five years ago and he’s led the men’s team to a conference title ever year, and I think they would have repeated again if they had a season. I wanted to go somewhere and be part of something great. York has a very good cross country program, and I wanted to continue on in that tradition.”

Business is a field of study that greatly interests him. “I will be a business major — I’m looking at management information systems,” he said. “My dad is a manager at a company in the city and I have seen what he’s done. I have taken a lot of business-related courses at York and that has spurred me toward business management and a business major. It gives me a lot of flexibility to do a lot of different careers. It sounds exciting and fulfilling to me.”

Vreeland started running cross country in middle school because of friends, he said. “I also played soccer, but when I got into high school I was not the best soccer player and I liked cross country a bit more,” he

added. “Freshman year I was dealing with a stress fracture, but I realized I could be pretty good if I was going to continue on with it. Sophomore year, I was an alternate on the state team.

But freshman year with my knee, it left me out and it left me wanting more and wanting to get better and be with my teammates. Sophomore year I started to improve as an athlete and more as a person as well.”

Vreeland said being part of the York running programs and their importance have been huge difference-makers in his life. “Words cannot describe it,” he said. “It has given me a platform to not only express myself athletically and socially, but it has given me the ability to run in college. I have been able to go so many places because of the coaches and my teammates. Without York, I don’t know if I would be the person I am today. It’s prepared me for running and also almost anything life has thrown at me.”

In his spare time, Vreeland keeps himself quite busy, working a pair of jobs at Elmhurst Brewing Company and Fleet Feet in the downtown corridor. He has worked at the running apparel and shoe store since sophomore year and became a food runner and busser at Elmhurst Brewing over the summer. “I was able to keep working both during the past cross country season,” he noted. “It’s given me a sense of order to maintain despite the sense of craziness happening around us. It is an understatement to say that 2020 was one of the more difficult years in recent memory for most Americans. Yet if history teaches us anything, it is that we can gain perspective by looking at the past to learn from previous arduous times.

Weaving together news reports and artifacts, “Together We Cannot Fail: Overcoming the Great Depression” presents a timely story illustrated by regional examples of how communities pulled together to support one another as the economy mended and the country regained its footing. The exhibit, which is sponsored by Feze Roofing, will be open at the Elmhurst History Museum from January 22 through May 2.

Lastly, “Together We Cannot Fail” will leave visitors with some though-provoking questions that draw parallels from the Depression era to the crisis our country faces today.

Artifacts from the Depression era “Together We Cannot Fail” will feature a number of rare artifacts and images, many from the Elmhurst History Museum’s own collection, to

illustrate this account of the Depression era: • Photographs of Camp Elmhurst, a local CCC facility located near Salt Creek on the western edge Elmhurst that was open from 1934-35; • Video footage of a 1936 centennial celebration of Elmhurst’s settlement that was designed to improve morale during the Depression with parades and events; • A recently-donated uniform, ID card and coin changer that belonged to Elmhurst resident Carl Bucholz who worked at a ticket booth during the 1933-34 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago; • A turn-of-the-century stock ticker, similar to those used at the time of the infamous Stock Market Crash of 1929; • A WPA architectural rendering of the McKee House in Lombard (built in 1936), a former headquarters for the Forest Preserve of DuPage County.

“York has definitely played a huge part in my life,” he said. “I don’t know where I would be without the people I have met there. It’s been different not going to school physically. I am hoping in these next couple months that we get some type of normalcy again and are able to go back to the school I love.”

Exhibit themes “Together We Cannot Fail” begins by focusing on some of the key causes of the Great Depression, which included a weakening economy, wealth inequality, financial policies such as the Gold Standard, and the 1929 Stock Market Crash.

Visitors will learn how typical families responded to and survived the ravages of the Depression, and how communities pulled together to help citizens in need with food pantries, soup kitchens and more.
