Republicans are calling for their Democratic counterparts in the Illinois House to join them in efforts to repeal criminal justice reforms, known as the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act, commonly known as the SAFE-T Act. Reps. Patrick Windhorst, R-Metropolis, Ryan Spain, R-Peoria, and Deanne Mazzochi, R-Elmhurst, joined House GOP Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, at a news conference Jan. 20 to announce their support for legislation, House Bill 4499, introduced recently, to repeal the SAFE-T Act. Spain called the SAFE-T Act “damaging and dangerous with real consequences for the people of the state of Illinois.”

Democratic proponents of the SAFE-T Act, who called the effort by super minority Republicans “all for show,” pointed out that many of the substantive changes created by the bill had not yet taken effect.

That includes a measure that would eliminate cash bail in favor of a pre-trial detention method that prioritizes aspects such as the level of danger a suspect poses rather than their ability to post bail. The exact parameters for pre-trial detention will be determined by the courts.

That measure takes effect in January 2023.

After 40 years, Odeum Expo Center to close

Plans announced to hold ‘Farewell Season’ at Villa Park facility

The Independent has learned that after 40 years, The Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park would be hosting its 40th anniversary and Farewell Season in 2022.

Owned and operated by the Elmhurst-based Greco family since 1981, the Odeum Expo Center has been a popular venue for concerts, indoor sports, haunted houses, trade shows, and much more, drawing patrons from throughout Chicagoland.

According to a release issued by the Odeum, Arrow Trans Corp, a trucking and warehouse business currently based in Elk Grove Village, will be relocating to the 12.9-acre site as of June 1.

History of the Greco family’s establishment Back in the 1970’s, the Greco family owned a hockey team called the Chicago Warriors. At that time, the family had to pay expenses for the

team to play at the old Chicago Stadium, where the Blackhawks played until it became the United Center. The costs were tremendous so Emil “EG” Greco decided to build his own hockey arena and the future Odeum was born.

EG built a facility that had three ice rinks and Hat Trick Ice Arena came to be. With the state of the economy what it was at the time, the Grecos decided to change from hockey to indoor soccer.

With no compressors needed to make ice and no power needed to run the compressors 24/7, costs of operation were reduced significantly.

On Nov. 13, 1981, the Odeum Sports & Expo Center was opened.

In its four decades, the Odeum has hosted various events, including concerts by KISS, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, and Amy Grant; haunted houses with Rob Zombie; both a Spring and Autumn Arts & Crafts Festival; mixed martial arts matches, semi-pro soccer and football teams, rodeos, pro wrestling, dog shows, circuses, religious and ethnic events, along with numerous public and private trade expositions. Last year,

the Odeum also became a COVID-19 drivethrough testing site for the DuPage County Health Department.

Grecos weigh in Odeum owners Phil and Sis Greco released the following statement: “We have had a lot of fun and have met fantastic and unique people from around the country, so we’ve enjoyed this business. We’re still booking and making things happen. We currently have a full plate seven days a week with indoor soccer and lacrosse through the end of March, and then we go into our spring season of special events through May 31, 2022.”

The following is the text of the recent “State of Our Chamber address as delivered

by John R. Quigley, president and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry: “As today’s Annual “State of Our City” Mayoral Address Membership Breakfast has been postponed until March 17 (yes, St. Patrick’s Day) due to concerns over the ongoing spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its related variants, I still want to take this opportunity to share my annual address on the State of Our Chamber with you.

“The Pandemic ranks as the mostchallenging of times during my now 22-year tenure as ECCI’s President and CEO and three decades of Chamber service—more so than the Great Recession of 2007-09 or even the 9-11 terrorist attacks of 2001, which marked its 20th Anniversary last September.

“Speaking for both our Chamber and myself, we feel blessed to be relatively healthy when so many businesses and individuals have not survived this economic and medical crisis. We have kept our door open for business during regular office hours throughout the Pandemic, and no full-time or part-time staff members were furloughed or fired.

“While negative impacts of the twoyear-old COVID-19 Pandemic cannot be downplayed, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry accomplished much worth celebrating in 2021—which will be done in fine fashion at our Chamber’s 103rd Annual Awards Gala hosted by Elmhurst University come March 25 (instead of the traditional late January date).

“Honorees include (no surprise here) Sesquicentennial-celebrating and Awards Gala host Elmhurst University as the A.J. ‘Toche’ Terrones Business of the Year; the late Jackie Hayden (Delta RMS), a COVID-19 casualty herself, as the Ambassador of the Year; Elmhurst History Museum Director Dave Oberg as the Chairman’s Award recipient; and former EU President and First Lady Bryant and Jeanette Cureton as ECCI Civic Hall of Fame inductees.

During 2021, ECCI joined the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in endorsing two major bipartisan federal bills—the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act and $1.2T Infrastructure Investment and Jobs

Act—to expand pandemic relief and foster job growth. ARP increased Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) of forgivable loans for small businesses and not-for-profit organizations John R. Quigley (including chambers of commerce) to pay for rent, employees and related expenses.

ECCI supported the refunding of both the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s (IDCEO) Back to Back Grant program and County of DuPage’s Reinvest DuPage Grant administered by Choose DuPage, our County’s economic development agency.

Last June, our Chamber resumed inperson monthly networking events, safely conducting Membership Breakfast and Business After Hours. September’s Chamber of Commerce Month activities featured our belated 102nd Annual Awards Gala as a breakfast event in Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187’s Normandy Banquet Room and “Networking on the 9s,” our 73rd Annual Golf Outing held at the Elmhurst Park District’s Sugar Creek Golf Course. With ECCI’s assistance, last October’s Second Annual Nashville Songwriter Fundraiser generated more than $20,000 to benefit our American Legion Post.

“Striving to comply with ever-changing federal, state, county and city mandates, our Chamber worked tirelessly (and safely) during the past 103rd year in operation to help ANY AND ALL Elmhurst businesses to both sustain operations financially and keep their workforce employed.

Since the troubling gravity of the virus first revealed itself back in March of 2020, ECCI has advocated on our member’s behalf to assure that federal, state, county and city governmental agencies and elected

officials understand the economic damage that COVID-19 and related public policy restrictions have inflicted on the Elmhurst business community.

“Our Chamber also promoted patronage of Elmhurst restaurants and bars online via ‘Dine Out’ From Home, a special website page which ranked as the No. 1 visited page among ECCI website users across Chicagoland over the 13-month period following its March 2020 development.

‘Dine Out’ From Home marketed some 90 member and non-member restaurants and bars which were “open for business” via walk-in takeout, curbside pick-up, drive-thru and/or delivery options for patrons during multiple bans on indoor dining.

“At a typical chamber, membership dues revenue covers the cost of staffing, but not much more.

“I am happy to report that Director of Member Services Grace Bagnole recruited a December record of 10 new members and reactivated the memberships of another four businesses.

“While amount of membership dues income stabilized in 2021, our Chamber still endured the loss of non-dues revenue from the Pandemic-caused cancellation of fundraising programs and special events— including the City of Elmhurst’s Explore Elmhurst Summer Trolley, “Salute to…”

Spring Luncheon, Pig Roast and a handful of multi-chamber networking and educational luncheons. Non-dues revenue is essential for a chamber to keep its financial head above water.

To safeguard ECCI’s future financially, our Chamber secured an increase of $200,200 in its Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) through the SBA for a total of $300,400.

The federal loan is payable over a 30-year period at a not-for-profit interest rate of 2.75 percent. We have invested some of those monies in Certificates of Deposit with member banks and recently purchased $20,000 in U.S. Treasury Series I Savings Bonds with a 7.2 rate of return.

“To those members who have remained loyalty to our Chamber during the most challenging of times, I thank you for that steadfast support.

“Believe me when I say that our organization is essential to the economic life of the Elmhurst community.”

800 block of N. York at 2:05 a.m. A reporting officer located a vehicle which was determined to have its catalytic converter removed. This case is pending investigation.

Jan. 13-Jan. 15 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 800 block of N. York. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converter from her blue Hyundai Tucson sometime between the above dates.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Jan. 13-Jan. 14 A victim in the 100 block of N. Pine told police that an unknown suspect(s) slashed the rear driver side tire of her vehicle sometime between the above dates.

DUI, DUI-drugs, transportation of open alcohol, possession of open alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor Jan. 19 Julie McFadden, 25, of Glenwood, was charged with illegal transportation of open alcohol by a driver, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Clinton at 9:52 p.m.

Jan. 16 Hugo V. Campos, 35, of Bolingbrook, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, no insurance, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an accident subsequent to a traffic crash near Lake and County Line at 4:59 a.m.

Pastor Sanchez Felix, 47, of Bellwood, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, speeding and improper lighting subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and York at 2:31 a.m.

Esben Garcia-Lopez, 28, of Addison, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, transportation of open alcohol and having a loud muffler subsequent to a traffic stop near North End and York at 12:52 a.m.

Jan. 15 Sameh Adwan, 22, of Alsip, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis by a driver, parking in the roadway and no insurance in the 400 block of N. York at 8:28 a.m. While on routine patrol, a reporting officer observed Adwan asleep behind the wheel in the area of York and Lake, according to police.

Jan. 14 Santos Rivera, 22, of Alsip, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, possession of open alcohol by driver, improper lane usage and no insurance near Route 83 and North at 3:33 p.m.

A reporting officer in the 400 block of N. West located the victim who appeared to be intoxicated on the ground. The victim was transported by medics to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. He was later cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor and released to a guardian.

Harassment, threats Jan. 13 Police said a victim in the 400 block of S.

CALL 800-222-TIPS Argyle was notified by co-workers of threats posted on social media by an activist group regarding his medical practice.

Possession of cannabis by a driver of a vehicle Jan. 12-Jan. 19 Between the above dates, Francisco Caksarrubias, 32, of Stone Park, was issued a citation for unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver.

Suspicious circumstances Jan. 14 A victim in the 600 block of N. York told police at 1:37 p.m. that he received a phone call from an unknown subject identifying himself as a police officer and attempted to gain information from the victim. The subject ended the call when the complainant questioned the subject.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Dec. 25-Jan. 19 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of E. Park between the above dates. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) had attempted to open an account using the victim’s personal information.

Jan. 16 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 100 block of W. Industrial at 3:07 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle at the above location, the offending vehicle fled upon seeing officers. Upon investigation, one truck was found to be missing its catalytic converter and a sawzall blade was located on the driver side of one of the vehicles. The offending vehicle was last seen westbound I-290 from York. An ISPERN message was broadcasted.

Retail theft was reported at a food store in the 900 block of S. York at 7:18 p.m. Upon arrival, the complainant relayed that an unknown suspect described as a black male in his 40s exited the store with multiple products which he did not pay for. The suspect’s vehicle was last seen heading eastbound on Butterfield. An investigation is pending.

Jan. 15 Commercial burglary was reported at an auto dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand at 9:53 a.m. A complainant told police that a suspect described as a black male between 35 and 50 years old entered the open service shop with his vehicle and loaded four brand new tires with rims into his vehicle.

Jan. 13-Jan. 14 Attempted theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 500 block of W. Grand. A victim reported upon hearing a loud noise, he observed an unknown suspect crouched under his vehicle. The victim yelled at the suspect who fled the scene in a newer model Ford sedan.

Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 800 block of N York. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converter from her vehicle sometime between the above dates.

Dec. 20-Jan. 14 Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of W. Lake between the above dates.

A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) gained access to one of the company’s checking accounts and made fraudulent charges.

Jan. 12-Jan. 13 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 300 block of W. Butterfield. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converter from his vehicle which was parked at the above location sometime between the above dates.

Jan. 12 Edwin Enger, 44, of Addison, was charged with burglary and theft at a store in the 600 block of W. Lake at 6:40 a.m. According to police, a reporting officer discovered a forced entry had been made to the business through a rear window. Upon further inspection, police said it was determined Enger took cash from a desk drawer and fled the area.

Dec. 23-Jan. 10 A victim in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police at 1:18 p.m. that he was missing several coins from a green box which was kept in a dresser. It was later discovered approximately two years ago the coins were given to a trustee of the bank to sell for the victim.

July 30, 2021-Jan. 5 Identity theft was reported in the 900 block of S. Spring, where a victim told police that an unknown suspect used her information to obtain NICOR gas service at an address in Steger Ill. Pending further investigation.

Dec. 26 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of Argyle at 11:28 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information in an attempt to open a bank account. Due to insufficient identification, the bank denied the suspect’s request. The victim has contacted the bank’s fraud department.

Dec. 16 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block

of W. Grantley at 4:08 p.m. A victim told police that he received a letter and credit card from PNC Bank in the mail that he did not apply for. The victim notified PNC of the identity theft.

Nov. 20 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 12:30 p.m. A victim told police that used the ATM at the above location and a few days later he received notification an unknown suspect(s) used his debit card and PIN information at the same ATM. The suspect(s) withdrew cash from the victim’s checking account.

Nov. 1-Nov. 5 Credit card fraud was reported in the 100 block of S. Hawthorne between the above dates. A victim told police that after returning home from shopping, she was unable to locate her wallet. A few days later, her wallet was found on the roadway and was returned to her. Upon receiving her wallet, she found she was missing two credit cards and received notification of fraudulent activities on those credit cards.

July 9, 2021 Forgery was reported in the 100 block of N. Richard at 4:25 p.m. A victim was notified by a financial institution regarding an outstanding business loan. The victim believes the suspect had forged her signature to obtain the loan from the lender. This case is pending investigation.

Warrant arrest

Jan. 19 Police said David Bonner, 49, of Elmhurst, was arrested on a warrant for criminal trespass to a vehicle subsequent to an ambulance assist in the 400 block of W. St. Charles at 11:40 p.m.

Jan. 17 Police said Mariusz Czyz, 30 of Morton Grove, was found to have a valid warrant from the Skokie Police Department in the 100 block of N. York at 12:19 a.m. Czyz also issued a citation for possession of open alcohol in public and released to the custody of the Skokie Police Department.

COVID testing available at Odeum Expo Center

DuPage County offers communitybased COVID-19 testing at the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park. Testing is free but limited tests are available per day.

This is a drive-thru testing site where individuals will give themselves a nasal swab test with instructions from staff.

Individuals are encouraged to get tested if they are experiencing symptoms or were in close proximity to someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

The Odeum Expo Center testing site is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and now on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The facility is located at 1033 N. Villa Ave. in Villa Park.

Obituaries

Patricia Corning, 92 Patricia Louise (Sander) Corning, age 92, left this life Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, to join our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as is promised in Holy Scripture.

Already there waiting for her are her husband, Charles H. Corning; parents, Leo P. Sander and Mary Elizabeth (Lyndon) Sander; sister, Carol (Sander) Luebering; and grandson, Matthew Thomas Corning. Pat is survived by her sons, Tom and Kevin; their spouses, Kim (Bujnowski) Corning and Mary Rose (Neven) Corning; granddaughters, Julia (Corning) Miller and Colleen (Corning) Griggs; and great grandsons, Charles Matthew Miller, William Matthew Griggs, James Thomas Miller, and Wesley Thomas Griggs.

Born June 8, 1929 in Atchison, Kansas and raised in Topeka during the Depression and War Years, Pat met Charles Corning while both were in attendance at Catholic Colleges in Denver. Married shortly after graduation, they first settled in Fort Belvoir, Va., during his military service, followed by happy years in Columbus, Ohio. Pat and Charles ultimately made Elmhurst their long-time home, residing on Avon Road for over 55 years. They raised their sons in Elmhurst, where Pat was an active member in civic, cultural, volunteer, and spiritual affairs of the community. Utilizing her collegiate education, where she was a Magna Cum Laude Graduate in Mathematics, Pat was a longtime volunteer in assisting the elderly in Elmhurst to prepare their income taxes. She loved her grandchildren very much and was always at the sideline for support during their activities growing up. In her final years, she lived near her son in Highland Park in Assisted Living and is most remarkably remembered by the staff there as a bright beacon of cheer, optimism, and by her always pleasant demeanor. William C. Schumacher, Jr., 95 Bill Schumacher, born May 2, 1926, passed away peacefully in Elmhurst on Jan. 15, 2022, at the age of 95.

Among the last of his generation, Bill lived a remarkable life characterized by

service, accomplishment and faith.

He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth Horn Schumacher, father of William C. Schumacher III, Margaret S. (Alan) Rehwinkel and Barbara S. (Robert) Hagenberg, grandfather of Robert John (Toby) Hagenberg III, Andrew S. Rehwinkel and Thomas C. (Heather) Hagenberg, and great-grandfather of Adeline, Afton, Charlie and Robbie.

The son of William and Eta Mae Schumacher, Bill was born in New Orleans and in many respects embodied the German ancestry of his father and Southern traditions of his mother. He was older brother to “R.E.” and often fondly remembered their summers together as youngsters at the family farm in southern Georgia. In 1944 at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an electronics technician during World War II. He resumed studies at Northwestern University following naval service, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from the School of Engineering in 1950.

Soon afterwards, he met the love of his life and was married to Betsy for nearly 70 years. He greatly enjoyed activities with his children and grandsons whether fishing, boating or traveling.

He had an illustrious career at International Harvester Company for more than 30 years, starting as foreman with progressive levels

of management responsibility to manufacturing director at the Tractor Works facility and then as an executive in the global purchasing unit. Subsequently, he was a sales associate in residential real estate for several decades.

He was also active in the community. A founding member of Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, trustee of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ and president of the board of directors of the Adult Christian Care facility at Epiphany Lutheran Church.

With the attention to detail of an engineer, the character of a moral person and the perspective of a family patriarch, he was a decent, kind and honorable man, always thankful for “these and all Thy many blessings.”

Latest COVID-19 surge has likely peaked, Pritzker says Numbers of hospitalizations, and patients in ICU or on ventilator, declining in Illinois

Gov. JB Pritzker said Jan. 18 that he is “cautiously optimistic” that the recent surge in COVID-19 cases spurred by the omicron variant has peaked, but he cautioned that another variant could appear at any time and continued to urge people to get vaccinated and wear face coverings when in public.

“Over the last two years, I’ve said over and over that you don’t know when a surge has reached its peak until you’re on the other side of it,” Pritzker said during a news conference in Chicago.

As of late in the day Jan. 18, 6,507 Illinoisans were hospitalized with COVID-19, a relatively high number but still down 11.8 percent from the peak recorded on Jan. 13 when 7,380 were hospitalized.

Of those hospitalized, 1,085 were in intensive care units and 608 were on ventilators, also high numbers but still down from their peaks of about a week earlier.

On Jan. 19, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported 26,491 new cases of the virus out of 194,306 tests performed. Over the previous seven days, the case positivity rate averaged just over 12 percent. But IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said the reported number of cases is no longer the most important statistic to track.

“I am absolutely moving away from the cases because we know that that’s not even the full story, given all the home tests and all the positives that are happening at home that are not recorded in any of our Department of Public Health databases,” she said. “But the hospitalizations, you can’t hide a hospitalization.

And so as we look at those hospitalizations and

understand where those numbers are going, … that is definitely a clear signal of the direction we’re moving in.”

The news conference took place on the same day the U.S. Postal Service officially opened a new website on which people can order free home testing kits. Every household can order a package of four individual rapid antigen tests that will be shipped in late January. That website is https://special.usps.com/ testkits.

Despite the downward trend, Pritzker and Ezike both urged residents to get vaccinated, to get booster shots when they’re eligible and to continue wearing face coverings in public places.

“The omicron surge has tested and proven once again that vaccines and masks are our best tools to keep most people safe from each variant of COVID-19,” Pritzker said. “Nevertheless, omicron’s high transmission rate caused more COVID hospitalizations than ever before. The vast majority unvaccinated. Our hospital systems and health care workers have battled to treat and to save not just COVID-19 patients, but every patient who walks through their doors.”

Pritzker noted that some hospitals in Illinois have been strained so much that they are reaching out to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for help.

On Jan. 18, he said, more than two dozen health care workers were deployed to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, a south suburb of Chicago. That’s in addition to the 22 workers deployed last week to the Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford.

Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s bridge funding for Illinois

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi Recently, I was delighted to join my colleagues in Congress and local representatives on the Rand Road bridge in Des Plaines to announce the funding that Illinois will be receiving from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to repair our bridges.

Illinois will receive $1.4 billion over five years to repair or replace bridges in poor condition. Of the more than 2,000 bridges in our Congressional district, about 12 percent

are classified as structurally deficient.

With this funding, we will begin to repair our bridges, keeping our communities and economy running smoothly and safely. I was proud to vote for this infrastructure bill so that Illinoisians can truly come together to promote safety and prosperity.

DHS establishes Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council The Department of Homeland Security is establishing the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council (HSAAC), a body that will consist of homeland security and

academic experts aimed at preventing the exploitation of the American higher education system to advance foreign interests.

Last Congress, I proudly introduced the bipartisan and bicameral Homeland Security Higher Education Advisory Council Act with Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Ralph Norman to reestablish this important council, and we successfully passed the key components of this legislation in the FY21 Appropriations Bill.

This council will re-establish a vital dialogue between the Department of Homeland Security and educational institutions regarding academic research, campus and

community resiliency, security and preparedness, and cybersecurity.

Membership on the new HSAAC will consist of representatives of universities, community colleges, K-12 school systems, historically, Black colleges and universities, Hispanic serving institutions, Tribal colleges, and Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander serving institutions.

My bill to rename Schaumburg Post Office in honor of the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars I recently introduced a bill to rename the Schaumburg Post Office

at 450 West Schaumburg Road as the “Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial Post Office Building.”

This renaming would honor veterans who risked their lives to defend America in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

When we visit this post office during our daily lives, this new name will remind us to reflect on the courageous sacrifices of these veterans.

Two-income households spur income inequality and polarization

By Jim Nowlan Household incomes in America have become more and more unequal over recent decades, as measured by the Gini Index of Inequality. American society has also become more sharply polarized, as measured by Donald Trump’s continuing, intense support in small town and rural America.

I know why, or at least know some of the key factors.

From my perch in rural Illinois since just after World War II, I have seen the causes at play: women now work, at any jobs they can achieve, and like kinds marry; unions are often shadows of their former strength and numbers, and singleparent households have tripled since my childhood, to about 30 percent of all.

Growing up in the 1940-50s, I recall that most married women stayed at home, and single women worked in limited fields until they married. Indeed, school boards required female teachers to stop teaching when they wed, to open a job for a man. Obviously, all is dramatically different today.

I illustrate with two families, composites of many households I have known personally.

Post WWII, Dr. Sam Smith, the local family doctor, and his family lived on the same block as Joe Jones and his brood. Doc Smith had a good income. His wife Sally, an RN, stayed at home with their children.

Joe Jones worked “on the line” at CAT in Peoria, a good UAW job.

His wife Joan stayed at home with the children.

The ratio of the doc’s income to that of the CAT worker was about 2- or 3-1. Both solidly middle-class families back then. Sam and Joe

were in the local Lions Club; they coached each other’s kids in Little League. Sally and Joan were active in the American Legion Auxiliary.

Fast forward to the present.

Dr. Smith’s granddaughter Susan is herself an MD. She married, not unsurprisingly, an MD. Their income is, say, half a million annually. One-time CAT worker Joe’s grandson Bob has little access to good union jobs. The crawler company has moved most of its jobs out of Illinois, to the non-union South, and the jobs aren’t as good as they once were, anyway. So, Bob now works at the local hog slaughtering plant, making around $35,000 a year. Of necessity, his wife Emily works at Walmart, making, say, $15,000 a year.

Now, the ratio of the medical family income to the worker stiffs is probably 10-1. The doctor-doctor couple is long gone from their grandparents’ small town, living far away in a leafy suburb or gated community. Bob and Emily are still in the small town, and depending on their cultural values, live in either a neat bungalow, or a sloppy small house with two rundown pickups in their yard. The twain of the doctorworking stiff families today shall never meet. And unfortunately, there are no young docs or other professionals left in the small town to strengthen the community leadership pool.

Bob is honked off about the situation. He sees on TV what the wealthy have. It doesn’t seem fair.

He backs Trump.

But there is worse, such as the single-parent household, headed by often ill-educated mother Marilyn (father has been absent since conception). Marilyn lives in a trailer on the edge of the small town, or in a low-income, federally subsidized apartment building, with lots of other single-mother

households.

On either minimum-wage work or a panoply of welfare programs, Marilyn receives about $15,00020,000 per year in income or benefits. Thus, the income of the gated-community docs to Marilyn is about 30-1! But kids of the single mom still want the same Nike sneakers as the docs’ children.

Trying to handle a rambunctious family on her own, Marilyn is hyper-stressed. Any resilience she may have had is about shot, for she lacks the strong support network the better off tend to have. Marilyn is so far behind in the race for stability

and comfort that she is thinking about giving up—maybe already has—to a life of welfare, drugs and alcohol.

What to do, to build stronger families in the struggling middle and at the bottom, and to reduce inequality?

Democrats favor replacing the income provided by a second person in the household in my youth with a range of government programs, which runs the risk of increasing long-term dependence on Uncle Sam. Republicans say more education is the answer. I propose incentive-driven, stair steps

of increased government support in return for increased efforts in the household at better parenting and more education and skill development.

Women work today, and at whatever jobs they qualify for, and they marry like kinds, if they marry.

Nothing wrong with any of that. Yet, it has consequences with which we need to grapple.

Don’t put off a chance to chase your dreams

There’s something about a new year that often has me reflecting on time. I guess that’s fairly natural.

For many of us, January is a time of assessing priorities, setting goals, wrapping up the old year and planning for what’s to come.

This year, those thoughts were punctuated by a note I received in the mail from my friend, Alice, in Ohio, who is a regular reader of this column.

Alice originally reached out to provide kind words of support after the loss of my husband and we became friends. She was 96-years-old at the time.

Alice has since had a birthday and is currently 97. I hope she doesn’t mind my divulging her age; it should be a source of pride. Not many of us have the opportunity to grace this

planet for 97 years—and remain in good health. Alice has managed to do both.

In her latest letter, Alice shared a bit of advice about life and this column. When a 97-years-young friend is kind enough to offer guidance based on their own life lessons you should understand it’s high time to listen. I sure did.

Alice suggested that if I was looking for something to write about, I might tackle this credo: “Don’t

sweat the small stuff and always think on the positive side.” It’s a mantra that Alice lives by, so it must be a pretty good one. In fact, it’s so good I think I may have heard it before.

Writers may have already covered the subject, maybe even in a book.

Still, the words are appropriate and worthwhile to ponder, as I did.

They’ve served Alice for many years and have proven themselves not only enduring but true. I will keep them in mind and think of Alice when I do.

This advice from Alice, while appreciated, was not, for me, the most important part of her letter. That came at the very end, when she told me that if and when she makes it to 100 years old she is going to go for a ride in a hot air balloon.

Upon reading that sentence, I knew it was my turn to share some

advice. I may be much younger than Alice, but I’ve got a few gems up my sleeve. If the last year has taught me anything it’s this: Alice, don’t wait three years for the hot air balloon ride. You’ve already waited 97 years, why wait any longer? Go tomorrow. Go today.

Just go.

Even if you go tomorrow, nothing is stopping you from going again when you turn 100. Nothing is stopping you from taking 100 hot air balloon rides between now and your 100th birthday. Or, by then you may have thought of something even grander you want to do.

Some of us wait our whole lives for our own hot air balloon ride, never taking the time for lift off. Some of us never get the chance for lift off. We bank on tomorrow when tomorrow

isn’t guaranteed.

I’m living that out through grief right now. We are all living it out through this “damndemic,” if you’ll excuse my semi-profane, albeit clever, play on words.

We are all living it out, but in 2022 whether or not you are 97, or 49 or 28, my advice is to live. Don’t wait for your next “big” birthday or life event to live out your own hot air balloon ride. Don’t wait to enjoy.

And, whatever the color of your balloon, or experience, it’s going to be spectacular because you can make it so.

Make it so.

If you are not yet familiar with US Congressman Sean Casten (District 6), I urge you to do so. If re-elected in November 2022, he will be representing me in Elmhurst. We have to also familiarize ourselves with the redrawn districts. For example, the new District 6 encompasses a lot of the west and north sides of Elmhurst.

I was first impressed with Sean Casten on March 24, 2018, when he spoke at the local March for Our Lives event organized by Downers Grove high school students. But the evidence scientists have gathered over the last two years can help people understand how to stay safe and avoid serious illness or death.

The COVID-19 vaccine is the safest and smartest protection someone can have from COVID-19, but there is some misinformation about it.

Anyone, including vaccinated people, with symptomatic COVID-19 should consider themselves contagious and follow the recommended quarantine procedure laid out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Vaccine myth: The Pfizer vaccine isn’t FDA-approved In December 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use for people age 16 and older.

That emergency use authorization (EUA) has been expanded over the last year to include anyone age 5 and older.

In August 2021, the FDA officially approved the Pfizer vaccine for ages 16 and older. As part of the official approval, the agency reported that the vaccine would be “marketed as Comirnaty.”

Before vaccines are officially approved, they’re known by the name of the company that created them.

Once they’re licensed for use in the U.S. by the FDA, most vaccines are given a name. Even the Varicella Virus Vaccine Live (chickenpox vaccine) has a name: VARIVAX. Pfizer simply named their officially approved vaccine Comirnaty.

EHM presents ‘People of the Prairie: 12,000 Years in DuPage County’ New exhibit uses archaeology to study of early Native cultures

History in Chicago’s suburbs didn’t begin when the first white settlers arrived around 1830. Long before that, since the end of the Ice Age about 12,000 years ago, people have taken advantage of DuPage County’s location and natural environment to provide for the needs of their families and communities. To put it in perspective, Euro-American communities have existed in this area for less than two percent of all the time people have lived in northeastern Illinois. So how do we unravel the stories of the Native people who lived here before the arrival of European settlers?

To answer that question, the Elmhurst History Museum will use an archaeological lens to gain a deeper understanding of the vibrant Native cultures and communities of the earliest inhabitants in their latest exhibit, People of the Prairie: 12,000 Years in DuPage County. The exhibit opens on February 4 and runs through June 5, 2022 at the Elmhurst History Mu-

Sunday, Feb. 6: Journeying Through the American Indian Way of Life, Free, 2 p.m. — On the exhibit’s opening weekend, award-winning Ojibwa author Kim Sigafus McIver will interweave history, storytelling, songs and drumming to discuss tribes that once inhabited Illinois and share their traditions and cultures. An Illinois Humanities Road Scholars program.

Sunday, March 6: Gallery Talk with the Curator, Free, 12 p.m.

— Curator of Exhibits, Dan Bartlett, will lead participants through highlights of the “People of the Prairie: 12,000 Years in DuPage County” exhibit.

Week of March 28-April 1: Spring Break Activities for Families — Families are invited to participate in different programs including a free Meet an Archaeologist! drop-in day, an off-site workshop at St. James Farm called From Atlatl to Archery: Ancient Hunting Technologies ($5 per person), and a free Three Sisters Make-and-Take Activity where participants will learn to grow corn, squash and bean plants together following Native traditions.

Sunday, April 10: Billy Caldwell and the Great Lakes Trail Lecture, $5/Free, 2 p.m.: Author Susan Kelsey shares the intriguing story of Billy Caldwell, a Chicago man of Native and Irish descent caught between two nations. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Sunday, May 15: Elmhurst Museum Day, Free, 1-5 p.m.: Elmhurst’s annual Museum Day celebration will feature exhibit tours, craft activities and members of Midwest SOARRING with Native dancers, crafts, drumming and more. Additional event partners include Elmhurst Art Museum with free tours and a hands-on art project and Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville with a “Voyageur for a Day” activity.

• Materials from the site of the Grand Village of the Kaskaskia at Starved Rock where Marquette and Joliet stopped in 1673 on their way up the Illinois River, including fragments of European trade goods that arrived at the site before the French explorers.

• Artifacts illustrating Potawatomi life at the edge of removal from the Windrose archaeological site near Kankakee, which was home to a Potawatomi village ca. 1800-1830 and one of a very few 19th century Potawatomi sites excavated in Illinois.

• Objects recovered from an archaeological dig of the circa 18301860 Euro-American Thompson Paxton Farmstead. Paxton was an early settler near the present-day DuPage County Big Woods Forest Preserve, and the Big Woods Congregational Church was founded in Paxton’s cabin in 1835.

• Three oversized, contemporary metallic print photos by Potawatomi photographer Sharon Hoogstraten taken for her “Dancing For Our Tribe” project to document contemporary Potawatomi Indian regalia.

“People of the Prairie” will also feature: • A timeline of the different archaeological periods of northeastern Illinois featuring graphics and objects that allow comparisons as to how people lived, ate and interacted with their neighbors.

• An “archaeology lab” where visitors can find out about the scientific methods used by archaeologists to locate and excavate sites and make sense of the evidence they discover.

• A digital map that graphically depicts the swift displacement of Native people in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Exhibit and visitor information “People of the Prairie: 12,000 Years in DuPage County” will be on display from Friday, Feb. 4 through Sunday, June 5 at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Author, historian to give MLK Lecture at Elmhurst University Michelle Duster is an author, professor, public historian, and champion of racial and gender equity. The great-granddaughter of journalist and activist Ida B. Wells, Duster has initiated numerous local, state and national initiatives to honor Wells and other African American female historical figures.

Duster will present “Black Suffragists and the Fight for Inclusion,” this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Intercultural Lecture, on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge.

Duster has written, edited and contributed to numerous books that explore and celebrate the historical contributions of African Americans,

including her most recent, Ida B. the Queen: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells, which was released in 2021. She co-wrote the popular children’s history book Tate and His Historic Dream; and co-edited Michelle Obama’s Impact on African American Women and Girls; and Impact: Personal Portraits of Activism.

She has been a significant contributor to other media as well, working on documentaries for PBS; writing articles for TIME, Essence, Huffington Post, People, the Daily Beast and other print and digital publications; and appearing on MSNBC, CNN and CBS. Duster has received numerous awards, including the 2019

Multi-Generational Activist Award from the Illinois Human Rights Commission and the 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Award from her alma mater, Dartmouth College.

She teaches and tutors writing at the college level and currently is working on two children’s picture books and several public history projects that feature women trailblazers.

ECPA kicks off February with annual ‘Hearts For The Arts’ The Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA) is bringing back its Hearts for the Arts campaign for its second year this February.

DuPage County announces low-income household water assistance program DuPage County Community Services is accepting applications for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) to assist income-eligible households with their water and wastewater fees.

Residents can call to set up an appointment beginning Monday, Jan. 24; the program will begin Tuesday, Feb. 1 and runs through Aug. 31, 2023, or until funds are depleted. Applications will be taken on a first-come, firstserved basis by appointment only.

Income-eligible homeowners and renters may receive one-time assistance to help with

water and wastewater bills, reconnection of water service, and water bill arrearages.

Households must have a past-due bill of at least $250 and be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level to receive a benefit from the LIHWAP program.

The 30-day income guidelines are based on federal poverty guidelines, which are: $2,147 for a single individual household, $2,903 for a household of two, $3,660 for three-member households, and $4,417 for a household of four.

From the composing duo that brought “Bandstand” to Broadway, Ace journeys through the lives of three generations of one family, and takes us from World War I, to World War II, and into the 1960s. As a boy loses his mother and tries to make sense of it all, he unexpectedly meets a family member who will change his life forever.

“What is truly remarkable about this story is how easily everyone can find themselves in it, in one character or another, one moment or another,” York drama director Matt Bourke said. “Over the last 22 months, it has become increasingly easy to focus on ourselves in hopes of finding clarity.

Ace reminds us it is through others, and only through others, that we can gain a new perspective or insight on what we thought we already knew.”

Immediately, Marianetti and Bourke felt a resonance toward the musical however, the process of achieving permission to perform Ace was a journey within itself.

Richard Oberacker and Robert Taylor, currently composing the Broadway-bound musical, “Bruce” (the story of the making of Steven Spielberg’s, “Jaws”), wrote Ace in 2006, and have reconceptualized the piece to become the musical they always dreamed.

“A close friend of mine was in the original cast of Ace, and has always raved about the score,” Marianetti said. “Through her connection to the production and the generosity and open mindedness of the composers, we were able to reach out and talk extensively with them about the show, and about what we believed our students could bring to the story, as the musical has never been performed at the high school level. We were floored when they gave us the permission to do so, and also offered to come in and work with our stu-

Students reflect on play York students had the opportunity to learn from Oberacker and Taylor in a two-day master class and concert performance in January. During the experience, students were able to gain hands-on experience from two of the largest names in Broadway.

“It feels surreal to not only meet the people who poured so much of themselves into the show we are performing, but composers who are truly masters of their craft,” said Leo Macariola, York senior who plays the titular role in Ace. “I hope to study composition in college, so I feel incredibly blessed to be part of a program that allows me to work one-onone with industry professionals.”

In addition to students learning the various machinations of composition and storytelling, York Drama has engaged in extensive study and review of military and American his-

tory in preparation for this musical.

The production team includes three dramaturgs, the leaders responsible for providing historical context and perspective informed by detailed research.

“As the dramaturg for Ace I’ve done extensive research into the historical aspects of the story; everything from the history of the Air Force as a branch of the military to popular hairstyles of the 1940s,” said Janine Ruszkowski, a York junior. “It’s an incredibly rewarding job, because I get to learn so many new facts and help flesh this show out into something real. I’ve always had a passion for history so getting to use my skills and my passion to bring Ace to life for the first time is such an honor.”

Supported by a large crew of student leaders, the cast of Ace feels prepared and focused to present this one-of-a-kind theatrical masterpiece with their community. Freshmen through seniors have been able to engage in the process from start to finish.

“The greatest gift this year is that we were able to come back together and create something beautiful,” said Paige Greve, York junior who plays Elizabeth. “Ace has been such a huge learning experience for me; it is about life, death, and the amount of time we have with those around us. We have had conversations that I will take with me not only in theater, but in my everyday life.”

Ace will be presented Thursday thru Saturday, Feb. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. in York High School’s Baker Auditorium.

The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team added some more hardware to its trophy case recently.

The Knights defeated Reavis 59-36 to win the Reavis tournament that started prior to the holidays. The title game was postponed into January. IC Catholic Prep also won the Lisle Cage Classic over the holidays.

“I could not have asked the kids to come out any better than we did,” IC Catholic Prep coach Todd Fisher said.

ICCP led 27-11 after the first quarter and 31-18 at halftime. “We jumped on them in the first quarter,” Fisher noted. Claire Wagner led the Knights with 19 points. Allie Geiger, a sophomore, had 16 points. Analisa Raffaelli and Kelsey McDonough each had seven points. Wagner was named the tournament MVP.

“We have been pressing teams more and decided to press them from the get-go,” Fisher said. “Allie had quite a few easy buckets in the first quarter. This was a really nice game. We led from start to finish.

The kids were happy. Going back to our preseason goals, getting a trophy at this tournament was one of them. I am proud of the girls for doing this.”

In other recent action, the Knights were 57-46 winners over neighbor Timothy Christian in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game. The Knights led 14-5 after the first quarter and 28-21 at halftime. Timothy led 34-33 going into the fourth quarter, but IC Catholic Prep used a 24-12 fourth quarter to pull away. Wagner had 17 points, while Geiger added 15 points. McDonough had 13 points.

“Defensively, I was very pleased

with what we did in the first and fourth quarter,” Fisher said. “We took care of the boards in the first.

Timothy came back in the third and outscored us 13-5. They got the ball nicely inside to Grace (Roland) and our interior defense that quarter wasn’t the greatest. We sped the game up in the fourth quarter and put on a press and went on a run pretty quick. We were down one or two possessions at one point. We did a nice job of putting pressure on them and getting a lot of easy buckets. It was a real nice conference win.”

IC Catholic Prep also recorded a 62-42 MSC Blue win over Riverside-Brookfield in a game that saw Wagner hit for 25 points. Geiger had 11 points, while McDonough added nine points and Fran Cook had eight points.

IC Catholic Prep led 19-7 after

the first quarter and 36-14 at halftime. The Knights were up 29 going into the fourth quarter, which triggered a running clock for the remainder of the game.

“We came out and had a real good first quarter,” Fisher said.

“Again, this was a real nice game against R-B. We were able to attack the basket, knock down 3s and get to the free throw line. We also played very good defense.”

IC Catholic Prep was 16-7 overall and 4-2 in MSC Blue play through late last week. The Knights have key upcoming conference games with St. Francis (Tuesday), Rosary (home for senior night, 7:30 p.m. tip) and at Chicago Christian (Friday at 7 p.m.) this week. Rosary and St. Francis each have one conference loss.

“We talked to the kids about climbing back into the race,” Fisher

said. “Rosary got us and St. Francis got us. We have to take care of business now. We have some huge games coming up and we can’t overlook any of them. We have to keep taking care of business.”

Overall, Fisher likes where his team is headed with February looming in the horizon.

“We emphasized with the kids that of those seven losses, three came in November,” he said. “The volleyball kids got started a little late with all their success. We were finding our identity. We had an unfortunate game against St. Francis where we were up big and didn’t take care of business. Rosary we were shorthanded, but we’re not here making excuses. We are playing really well and I like our defense a lot. I think we are going to be peaking at the right time, but we know we have business we have to take care of.”

Trojans earn huge victory over Aurora Central

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team stopped a rough skid with a recent 72-17 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win over Aurora Central Catholic. The Trojans led 24-0 after the first quarter and 38-8 at halftime. The win snapped a stretch where Timothy was 1-9 in 10 games dating back to the start of the York tournament.

“We had a rough stretch during Christmas where we weren’t scoring the ball well,” Timothy coach Scott Plaisier said. “We didn’t have Vandy (Ben VanderWal) for a few games.

And then we ran into a very good Riverside-Brookfield team and lost the double-overtime game to Rockford Lutheran. It had been a while since we were on the right side of a game.

But even through the losses, it felt like we were getting better, improving, and gaining confidence. We had a couple opportunities to secure the win against Rockford Lutheran and couldn’t make that final play to get it done. We took some aggression into the Aurora Central game. It was good for the boys to gain that amount of confidence against a relatively strong team in ACC.” Plaisier liked how his team competed defensively in the ACC win.

“We defended really well,” he said.

“Finally, for the first time this year, we jumped on a team right away. We extended our pressure out and got a handful of turnovers and stops that led into some buckets. Going into that game, we had been on the other side of games where other teams were coming out against us and getting up 12-2 and 10-0 and we’d have to call a time-

out two or three minutes into a game.

That used to be our MO. We used to get on teams eight away. Getting up 24-0 after the first quarter, it was nice to get a little confidence and score and get stops. That allowed a bunch of guys to get a lot of playing time in the second half.”

VanderWal led the way with 22 points. Trey Keizer had 14 points, while freshman Ryan McKenzie had eight points in a game that saw 14 Timothy players hit the scorebook.

Timothy shot 65 percent from the field. Trey Keizer and McKenzie each had two 3-pointers. Timothy hit eight 3s in the game. Ben McMillian had six assists, while Kyle Steiner had four assists and four steals. VanderWal had five steals, while junior Myles Foy had three steals.

Plaisier noted the team has been

receiving strong play of late from the likes of Keizer and Kyle Steiner. “Trey has played really well,” he said. “We have been getting really good minutes from Kyle. Those two and Ben have been leading the charge, stepping up scoring and their playmaking. They have helped us offensively. We needed a couple of guys to give us a boost and give Vandy some assistance. They have been doing that, which has been good.”

Timothy also dropped a 57-37 non-conference game to Northridge Prep out of Niles. Timothy led 11-9 after the first quarter and trailed 2321 at halftime. Northridge outscored the Trojans 34-16 in the fourth quarter. VanderWal led the Trojans with 14 points. McMillian and Jake Firnsin each had six points. Timothy shot 36 percent from the field. McMillian

made two 3-pointers. VanderWal was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. VanderWal also had 10 rebounds.

Timothy was 10-14 overall after the Northridge game. The Trojans returned to conference action earlier this week against Aurora Christian and will host Wheaton Academy Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip. Timothy heads across town Tuesday, Feb. 1 to play IC Catholic Prep again. Timothy won the first meeting 51-43 in December at home.

“We have some good games coming up against teams on our sectional side with Northridge, Wheaton Academy and IC Catholic Prep,” Plaisier said. “Those games will kind of determine where we end up falling in the next couple weeks.”

Timothy will host a Class 2A regional this year, Plaisier noted.

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team came up with a big one on the road recently. The Trojans were 42-37 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division winners over St. Francis in Wheaton. The loss was St. Francis’ first in Blue Division action.

Timothy led 14-13 after the first quarter and 23-21 at halftime. Timothy used a 14-3 third quarter to go up 37-24 and then withstood a 13-5 run by the Spartans in the fourth

quarter. Junior Grace Roland led the Trojans with 15 points, while Maddie Drye had 11 points and Tegan Gunn had seven points. Sami Drye, a freshman, had six points. Maddie Drye made three 3-pointers, while Sami Drye and Roland each made two. Roland had six rebounds, while Maddie Drye had five rebounds to go with five assists. Roland blocked two shots.

“It was a big win for us,” Timothy coach Jill Groenewold said. “Defensively, we held them to 25 percent

shooting from the floor. That will win you ballgames. We were very patient on offense. We looked inside and we had six 3s. We had good inside and outside scoring.”

Timothy also dropped a 55-33 non-conference game to Montini.

The Broncos led 16-13 after the first quarter and 26-16 at halftime. Roland led the way with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Mili Martens had seven points. Roland was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. She also had nine rebounds. Maddie Drye had

four assists and two steals.

“Montini is a pretty powerful team,” Groenewold said. “I was very proud of our effort. We were down by 10 at halftime and then they made a bit of a run on us. We played pretty fearless. I was happy with our efforts overall.”

Roland continues to be a bright spot for the Trojans since returning from injury. “Grace has been playing real steady coming off her injury and that has been a big thing for us,” Groenewold said.

Groenewold also has been pleased with the play of Maddie Drye, along with Ella VanderMolen and Tegan Gunn of late. “Maddie continues to play well,” she said. “She does a nice job of mixing it up on the outside and driving into the paint. Her leadership initiative also has been a big asset for us. Ella and Tegan have also helped us carry the load.”

For fans of cross-country skiing, rangers groom more than 50 miles of trails at forest preserves such as Blackwell in Warrenville, Fullersburg Woods in Oak Brook; Danada and Herrick Lake in Wheaton; Greene Valley and Springbrook Prairie in Naperville, Mallard Lake in Hanover Park, Meacham Grove in Bloomingdale, and Waterfall Glen in Darien.

Visitors who aren’t classic skiers should use the inside of the rails to avoid damaging the set tracks.

Ice fishing, ice skating and sledding are allowed at most forest preserves, although never at Spring Creek Reservoir in Bloomingdale.

Additionally, sledding is not allowed at Mount Hoy at Blackwell

or the closed landfill sites at Greene Valley and Mallard Lake.

The forest preserve district does not monitor ice conditions, so visitors go on ice at their own risk.

As a guideline not a guarantee, there should be at least 4 inches of clear ice for any activity for one person and 8 inches of clear ice for a group.

Finally, when there’s adequate snow conditions, mushers can dog sled on the Thunderbird Spur Trail at Greene Valley and on the West Branch Regional Trail, Bobolink and connector trails north of Mack Road at the McKee Marsh area of Blackwell.

Aiming to increase diversity in wind and solar jobs, a proposed measure in the Illinois General Assembly would require more transparent reporting on the level of participation of

minority-owned businesses in clean energy jobs.

Rep. William Davis, D-Hazel Crest, advanced House Bill 4217 through the House Energy and Environment Committee Jan. 18. The measure aims to increase “diverse

Businesses that make less than $15 million a year would possibly be exempt from filling out diversity reports but would still have the opportunity to do so if they desired.

Reports would be found on the Illinois Commerce Commission’s website under supplier diversity, which makes it easier for utility companies to look up and get in touch with the desired businesses.

Since renewable energy focuses more on the maintenance of wind and solar farms, Johnson noted that the law had yet to contemplate the reality of renewable energy businesses and suppliers when building these farms.

Language in HB 4217 would align standards with the Clean Energy Jobs Act, he said.

“In a way, we’re sort of trying to catch up to the workforce diversity that was in the (CEJA package) to say let’s catch up on the supplier diversity piece of it as well,” Johnson said.

ISBE data The survey results paint a different picture than the most recent state report card from the Illinois State Board of Education, which indicated the teacher workforce has been growing, due in large part to the additional funding districts have received from both state and federal sources.

“We are encouraged by a lot of what we can see at the state level in terms of growth overall in the number of full-time teachers,” Jen Kirmes, ISBE’s executive director of teaching and learning, said in an interview.

“We’re also encouraged by what we see in terms of educator preparation, programs, enrollment and completion.

And so there certainly are reasons to be optimistic.”

“We also know that there are great needs in places still for classroom educators,” she added. “But also, we’re hearing from districts about the need for other really critical support professionals who make school work for students like bus drivers, substitute teachers, paraprofessionals. And of course, especially during a pandemic, school nurses.”

Klaisner said IARSS does not dispute the data from ISBE, but he said 2020-21 findings were skewed by the pandemic and the fact that most districts were operating entirely remotely.

“A lot of folks are scratching their head, like, how do you measure those numbers in a year where some schools were closed all year long,” he said.

“And what are you counting? Are you counting contacts? Were you counting the number of kids enrolled? Were you counting attendance? And so we recognize our data, as well as anybody else’s data over the course of (fiscal year) ‘21 was skewed to some degree, no matter what you did, because we weren’t really sure how to count things.”

Kathi Griffin, president of the Illinois Education Association, the state’s largest teachers union, said there is definitely a teacher shortage that is being made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve been struggling with a teacher shortage for a number of years,” she said. “We’ve had fewer and fewer college students choosing the profession of education for their college degree. However, the pandemic has just really brought to light the real, true shortage.” She said shortages have also been fueled by early retirements and by teachers who left the profession.

“I don’t think that the general public realizes the stress, as well as what is being expected of educators,” she said. “It’s like, OK, we went back in the fall, and the doors opened, and magically everything was supposed to go back to how it was from March of 2020. And that’s just not realistic.”

School officials across Illinois say a shortage of teachers and substitutes is forcing them to cancel course offerings, move them online or fill open positions with people who are not fully qualified.

Those are the findings of the latest survey by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools, the fifth such survey the organization has conducted in as many years.

“Our schools need help, now more than ever,” said Mark Klaisner, IARSS president. “For five years of our study, we have shown how schools are struggling to find qualified teachers and are under tremendous stress to provide the best education possible while understaffed and overwhelmed.

COVID-19 has only made those challenges worse.”

The survey included responses from 663 of the state’s 852 school districts, representing 78 percent of public schools in Illinois. It was conducted in the fall of 2021 by Goshen Education Consulting, based in Edwardsville.

Overall, 88 percent of the districts responding said they had a shortage of full-time teachers, while 96 percent said they had a shortage of substitute teachers. Districts responding reported a total of 412 classes were canceled and 385 were converted to online instruction because of teacher shortage issues.

More than 2,000 positions are either not filled or filled by someone not qualified to teach there, more than double the number reported from last year. That includes the increased use of paraprofessionals—people who are not fully licensed as teachers but who are credentialed to work under the direction of a licensed teacher.

The shortage is most acute in the east-central and west-central regions where more than 90 percent of the districts responding said they had a teacher shortage problem. But even in the northeast region where the shortage appeared to be least significant, 79 percent of districts reported a teacher shortage, while overall 77 percent of districts said the shortage is getting worse.

In an interview, Klaisner said the biggest shortage areas were among special education and English as a Second Language teachers, while science and math teachers were also in short supply.

He also said regions that largely depend on career technical education have had a difficult time with staffing.

He also found “interesting” challenges in hiring physical education instructors.

Districts also reported having a harder time hiring administrators. Although the problem was less severe, 35 percent of the districts responding said they had a minor-to-serious problem hiring administrators, while 95 percent said they are receiving fewer

applications for open administrator positions.
