The Elmhurst Park District Board held its first regular meeting of 2018 on Jan. 15 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street.

Commissioners Doug Ennis and Patricia Morissette-Moll were absent from the meeting.

There were no public comments.

The board voted unanimously to approve an ordinance adopting a policy prohibiting discrimination, harassment and retaliation in the workplace. Shortly before the vote, Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers noted that a new Illinois law required local governments to take legislative action on a harassment policy by Jan. 16, 2018. Rogers said the park district already had a related policy in place.

He stated that after consulting with the Illinois Association of Park Districts, the district made some minor tweaks to its policy.

After the board approved the ordinance, Julie Bruns, the district’s division manager of human resources and risk management, gave a brief presentation outlining the district’s harassment policy. Bruns said the district takes all harassment reports seriously. She also said the district takes appropriate action in dealing with false reports.

The meeting included a discussion of the City of Elmhurst’s consideration of a new Tax Increment Finance (TIF) district in downtown

Elmhurst that would replace the existing TIF. Rogers told the board the existing TIF expires in 2021, and the city would like to create a new one.

The city is suggesting that Wilder Park and the district’s property at 135 Palmer Drive be included in the new TIF. Rogers said there is no downside to the properties being included in the new TIF. He said the city would have no rights to dictate or pressure anything the park district would do at Wilder Park or 135 Palmer Drive.

Rogers also said including the two properties wouldn’t guarantee anything for the park district, but it could create the potential to utilize TIF dollars for development.

Kari Felkamp, the district’s director of marketing and communications, noted during the staff announcements segment of the meeting that the district has reached out to the public to get feedback about the district’s community events. The district released its survey about its community events last week. According to Felkamp, the district received nearly 640 responses within 72 hours.

At the end of the meeting, Commissioner Kevin Graf said the Elmhurst Public Library was the only warming center in the city on extremely cold days. Graf asked if a park district facility could serve as a warming center on such days. Rogers said he would make a note of Graf’s suggestion.

The board will hold its next meeting on Jan. 29.

Elmhurst Academy students put on their thinking caps, adjusted their goggles, and brought to life their own inventions in celebration of the national Kid Inventors’ Day. This day commemorates the birthday of all-around genius and kid inventor, Benjamin Franklin and celebrates kid inventors around the world. It also aims to encourage children to be curious about the world around them and to be creative when solving problems. With the help of parent volunteers, the students used hammers, nails, drills, and other tools to build these complete inventions.

Elmhurst Police investigate residential burglary attempts up or SUV with a loud muffler leaving the area. Nothing was taken and there was no suspect description.

A short time later at 7:10 p.m. in the 500 block of Third Street, a resident discovered a male/black, 5’09, thin build, wearing a dark hoodie, standing in the foyer of the home holding a handgun. The resident fled inside of the house and summoned a fami-

ly member who called police. Responding police checked the house and did not locate the offender. It appears that the offender may have entered an open rear patio door.

Nothing is known missing at this time.

Committee examines stronger DUI laws

The advisory committee reviewed the following three measures designed to combat impaired driving: • Strengthen DUI laws by revising the statue defining a first-time DUI offender. Under current statutory summary suspension law, motorists are considered first-time DUI offenders if five or more years have passed since their last DUI. • Strengthen prosecution of DUI by allowing prosecutors to introduce as evidence past DUI offenses committed by the defendant to a jury during a trial. Currently, the law does not allow past DUI convictions to be introduced as evidence during a jury trial.

• Strengthen impaired driving laws by cracking down on impaired driving with a special emphasis on prescription drugs such as opioids.

This measure is in response to the opioid epidemic and the increase in DUI cases involving the use of prescription drugs. Amends certain sections of the Illinois Vehicle Code to include prescription drugs alone, or in combination with alcohol, that may result in impairment and administrative sanctions.

The advisory committee, comprised of legislators, federal and state traffic safety experts and law enforcement officials, is scheduled to meet again on Monday, Jan. 29, to vote on the proposals and consid-

MARGARET ELIZABETH “BETTY” WILSON Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away Jan. 12, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Betty was born September 15, 1927 in Dousman, Wisconsin to Robert and Margaret Pritchard, both of whom preceded her in death. Betty had an idyllic childhood in Dousman and later met Robert “Bob” Wilson while working at the Wisconsin Masonic Home.

They were married on October 1, 1949 and remained together happily for 68 years. Betty and Bob raised their two daughters, Sandy and Linda, in Elmhurst, Illinois while Bob worked as a pilot for American Airlines. The family enjoyed many trips

The preserve, including its offleash dog area, will remain open.

As a precaution, the Forest Preserve District has posted signs at the preserve and notified off-leash dog permit holders of the unconfirmed sightings.

“If it was a cougar, it is highly likely it was a young adult searching for a mate or suitable habitat and was just passing through,” said District ecologist Brian Kraskiewisz. “Many wildlife species move through the landscape using passageways such as river corridors and railroad tracks, both of which are present at East Branch.”

A cougar weighs between 70 and 240 pounds and has a tan or tawny coat with white or cream-colored chin, undersides and inside of legs.

The backs of its rounded ears are solid black to dark gray. Its thick blacktipped tail can be as long as half of its total body length.

By 1870 cougars were nonexistent in Illinois. In recent years only a handful of transient lone animals have been found in the state. Cougars are a protected species in Illinois.

Forest preserve visitors who think they see a cougar should not approach it. They should keep pets near them as they slowly leave the area and report sightings to the IDNR at 847-608-3100. For preserve safety concerns, contact the Forest Preserve District police at 630-933-7240.

2 people killed in Addison house fire

According to a WGN-TV news report, Addison Fire Department officials have confirmed two people were found dead inside a home on Ellsworth Avenue near Armitage following a fire that broke out at the home early Monday morning.

Addison Fire Department officials told WGN-TV the fire started in the kitchen area, moved up into the attic and spread to the rest of the house, and the two individuals were found dead in the back bedroom.

Fire Department officials told WGN-TV there were no working smoke detectors inside the home at the time of the fire.

The WGN-TV report showed smoke coming from the single-story house. Fire Department officials told WGN-TV that a couple driving by in a semi-truck saw smoke from the house and called 9-1-1 at around 2:30 Monday morning, and firefighters responded within five minutes.

Addison Deputy Fire Chief Scott Walker told WGN-TV at the scene of the fire that when firefighters were trying to get into the building, “a lot of fire had consumed the roof area.” A lot of the structure had collapsed in, Walker said, and “we had to pull crews back and kind of regroup to find a better access into the

building.”

The Addison Fire Department is still trying to find out exactly what caused the fire, according to the WGN-TV report.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee met on Jan. 18 in Chicago to examine impaired driving laws and consider measures aimed at making Illinois roads safer by reducing impaired driving crashes and fatalities.

“My mission as Secretary of State is to make the roads of Illinois safer than ever,” said White. “I reconvened the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee to review and develop innovative measures to further strengthen our state’s impaired driving laws. Although Illinois is ranked among the top states in the nation for efforts to fight drunk driving, I refuse to grow complacent.”

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Melissa Guerrero, 18, of Peotone, and Amanda Pridmore, 19, of Oak Park, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 2:11 a.m. Police said a reporting officer responded with medics to Elmhurst College for the report of an intoxicated female. College security was standing by with an intoxicated female student, Pridmore, who had been found lying in the hallway, according to police. Police said Pridmore had been brought home by Guerrero, who later admitted to drinking alcohol at a house party.

Assault, battery

Jan. 5 A victim in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police that a suspect struck her in the face with an open hand while in a car, according to police, and ripped her necklace and bracelet off after accusing her of stealing money. The suspect, police said, related they did have a verbal agreement; however, it never turned physical. No arrests were made due to the victim refusing to sign complaints.

Disorderly conduct

Jan. 12 Police said officers responded to a complaint of a patient at Elmhurst Hospital who made threats over the phone. A complainant told police that the suspect requested a callback regarding complaints against the hospital. When the suspect received a call, police said he became belligerent on the phone and was threatening the complaint. The suspect was served a trespass notice.

Jan. 6 Police said officers responded to the 400 block of Parkside Avenue at around 3:31 a.m. for the report of a suspicious subject. Police said the reporting officer spoke to a victim who stated that Kyle Perrone, 22, of Elmhurst, rang his doorbell and was standing outside the house. Officers located Perrone, who appeared to be heavily intoxicated, according to police.

Perrone was issued a citation for two counts of disorderly conduct.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Jan. 16 A 22-year-old Berkeley man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill Road at around 11:16 p.m. Police said officers responded to the report of a physical altercation between a male and female where the male reportedly punched the female in the face. The victim told police she and the suspect began arguing, and the suspect reportedly pushed her, causing her to lose her balance. Police said both parties ended up on the ground mutually hitting each other, and the suspect struck the victim in the face with an open hand. Both parties had marks from the altercation.

A 20-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 200 block of N. Maison Court at around 1214 p.m. Police said the suspect was found to have damaged the front door to the home and also pushed and grabbed a victim by the arm, causing a bruise.

Jan. 15 Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic incident in which one person threw a frying pan and another punched a door. Both were involved in a verbal argument over house rules and agreed to stay away from each other the rest of the evening.

Jan. 13 Police said officers responded to the 100 block of E. First at around 7:26 p.m. for the report of a domestic dispute between two parties. A victim told police that a suspect reportedly pushed her and took her purse. The

CALL 800-222-TIPS suspect told police he was pushed by the victim. Due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

Jan. 7 A 42-year-old Chicago man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of E. Lake St. at 12:47 a.m. Police said officers located the victim, who stated she ran from her apartment to get away from the suspect. According to police, the victim stated the suspect battered her and threatened her with a hand gun. Officers were unable to locate the gun at the scene.

Jan. 6 A 25-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 12:12 a.m. Police said officers responded to the above location, and the victim stated the suspect was intoxicated and began to punch the victim.

DUI, illegal consumption or possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of open alcohol, illegal possession of open alcohol Jan. 17 Jamar White, 29, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, expired registration, unlawful use of an electronic communications device and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Villa at around 11:32 p.m.

Jan. 16 Marvin R. Mendoza-Castill, 28, of Addison, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal parking in the roadway, failure to dim headlights and no insurance near Lake and York at around 11:16 p.m.

Police said an officer witnessed the suspect’s vehicle parked diagonally across both lanes of eastbound Lake Street and made contact with the suspect, who was slumped over the wheel.

According to police, the officer also observed a case of beer on the front passenger seat and an open beer in the center cup holder.

Jan. 13 Brittany Battaglia, 28, of Bloomingdale, was charged with DUI, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and St. Charles at around 3:06 a.m.

Police said an inventory of Battaglia’s purse yielded a straw with a white powdery substance, suspected to be cocaine.

Christopher Dumitrescu, 28, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 1:24 a.m.

Jan. 12 Brian T. Cahill, 20, and Jake Fejes, 19, both of Elmhurst, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor near St. Charles and York at around 1:08 a.m. Police said that subsequent to observing suspicious subjects at the above location, Cahill and Fejes were found to have consumed alcohol while under the legal age.

Jeanette Murphy, 51, of Lemont, was charged with DUI near Quincy and York at around 9:19 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a report of a vehicle parked at the intersection, Murphy was found to be DUI. Jan. 8 Cesar Tlacualtl-Mendoza, 35, of Cicero, was charged with felony DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license suspended, improper lane usage and driving without headlights near York and Vallette at around 7:17 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a report of a vehicle that had struck a light pole and was driving recklessly, Tlacualtl-Mendoza was found to be DUI and failed field tests. Police said Tlacualtl-Mendoza refused to provide a breath sample, and a warrant to obtain his blood was subsequently obtained.

Jan. 6 Steven J. Molinari, 42, of Orlando, Fla., was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a vehicle crash near North and York at around 4:32 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding

Jan. 14 An officer from the Wood Dale Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle near I-290 and St. Charles at around 2:18 a.m. The suspected vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, eastbound on I-290 from Route 83, according to police. A reporting officer located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle reportedly accelerated rapidly and failed to stop.

Harassment, threats

Jan. 15-Jan. 16 A complainant in the 900 block of Cedar told police that she has been receiving text messages from a phone number she did not recognize. The complainant states she has received over 100 text messages from a person whom she had dated in 2017, but was no longer dating him. The text messages were attempting to pursue the complainant for a date; they were not threatening in nature. An officer contacted the number and advised the suspect not to contact the complainant anymore.

Police said while investigating a report of a runaway juvenile in the 900 block of Virginia Lane at around 9:46 p.m., officers made contact with Mario Reyes, 24, of Forest Park, who was sitting inside a suspicious vehicle in front of the residence. Police said Reyes was found to be in possession of cannabis and was issued a citation.

Jan. 16 A complainant at a business in the 100 block of Industrial Drive told police at around 11:14 a.m. she allegedly received an email from her boss, stating, “Wire (an undisclosed amount of money) to the wire instructions below and let me know when it’s done. I’ll reimburse next week,” followed by wiring instructions with specific banks and account numbers. No funds were transferred. Officers will contact the bank. The employees were advised to re-set all of their email passwords.

Jan. 13 A complainant told police he was involved in a verbal altercation with a suspect in the parking lot of a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 8:06 p.m. Police said the complainant entered the store and contacted 9-1-1.

A reporting officer made contact with the suspect, who stated she was meeting a possible buyer for an Apple watch in the parking lot, saying she wanted to sell the watch she purchased from a friend, and believes it was stolen. The officer took possession of the watch and placed it into evidence.

Michael Jones pleads guilty to 1985 murder of Kristina Wesselman

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin recently announced that Michael Jones, 64, formerly of 2508 Southmoor Drive, Champaign, has entered a plea of guilty to the 1985 murder of fifteen-year-old Kristina Wesselman. Jones appeared in court this afternoon in front of Judge George Bakalis, who accepted Jones’ plea. Jones has been held in custody at the DuPage County Jail without bond since September 21, 2015.

In the afternoon hours of July 21, 1985, Kristina left her home on Cypress Drive in unincorporated Glen Ellyn to go to the Jewel Grocery store near her home. She never returned home from the store. At approximately 11:15 a.m. the following day, her partially nude body was discovered in a field between her home and the store. She had been sexually assaulted and stabbed multiple times. An extensive investigation into her murder yielded no results and the case eventually went cold. The case has remained active since then. On September 10, 2015, the DuPage County Crime Laboratory informed detectives from the Sheriff’s Office that there was a DNA match through the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) that identified a specific person as the contributor of the DNA profile obtained from the sexual assault kit performed during Kristina’s autopsy. Further investigation led by the Sheriff’s Cold Case Unit with assistance from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office led to Jones. On Friday, September 18, 2015, authorities from DuPage County traveled to Champaign, took Jones

I’m sure that in that time, not a day has passed that Kristy’s family hasn’t thought about today, the day of reckoning for the man who sexually assaulted and murdered Kristy. Her family and friends have waited a long time for justice and today, justice was delivered.

Jones’ next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 23, at 1:30 for sentencing.

Hold on to your wallets; Springfield back in session for 2018

State lawmakers will start returning to their perches in Springfield Jan. 23. What can Illinoisans expect?

2017 left a bad taste in the mouths of many. The year began with an impasse and ended in a torrent of treacherous policy choices. In exchange for waiting out a historic budget logjam, Illinoisans were rewarded with the largest permanent income tax hike in the Land of Lincoln’s history. And state lawmakers couldn’t even balance the budget with that extra money, as they made not a single significant spending reform.

This year is different. With statewide elections in November, the 2018 forecast calls for gridlock.

House Speaker Mike Madigan will aim to block anything that could be perceived as a “win” for Gov. Bruce Rauner. This hurts Illinoisans in two major ways: The first being the largest tax they pay, the property tax, will likely continue to grow at an alarming clip.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau show property taxes grew six times faster than household incomes in Illinois from 2008 to 2015. That growth is squeezing family budgets across the state. The real property tax burden—property taxes paid as a share of income—grew by nearly 38 percent.

Those who checked their local newspaper at the end of 2017 were bound to see news of local governments voting to raise those bills even higher. Instead of imposing a property tax freeze and providing tools for those bodies to more effectively manage their costs, state lawmakers will more than likely continue to sit on their hands while they chain those of local leaders—ensuring property taxes continue to go up.

And good luck slipping reform past a House speaker intent on winning back the governor’s seat for his party.

The second way Madigan’s game hurts Illinoisans is that legislation will be driven not by the most pressing policy matters, but by what can be used as an election-year cudgel.

That could include a proposal to hike Illinois’ minimum wage. Regardless of the economic effects of such a move, recall Illinois Democrats enjoyed recent years of supermajority control of the General Assembly and the governorship yet did not touch the issue. This is politics.

It will also likely include discussions to scrap Illinois’ constitution-

ally protected flat income tax—one of the only pro-growth policies left unsullied in the state—in favor of a progressive tax structure.

This is already being sold as a way to make the rich pay their fair share. What proponents won’t tell you is that bringing peer states’ progressive tax structures to Illinois means a massive middle class tax hike.

And they won’t tell you that Illinois can ill afford to make it more expensive to live here. The state is currently experiencing a severe outmigration problem, losing nearly 643,000 residents on net to other states since 2010. That makes the surging cost of government even more expensive for those who stick around.

The Trojan horse that is the progressive tax doesn’t require the governor’s signature, but rather a threefifths majority vote in the House and Senate, after which voters would have to approve the change at the ballot box.

Illinoisans should also keep their eyes peeled for discussion of marijuana legalization. It’s a worthy debate to be sure—especially in a state with a criminal justice system that produces eminently poor outcomes and some of the nation’s worst finances—but in 2018 it will be staged primarily for political purposes.

In all likelihood, none of these three proposals will pass this year.

They will simply suck up air.

In the meantime, homeowners will be gasping for breath. And many more will seek refreshing opportunity in greener pastures.

There is a glimmer of hope, however. Illinoisans should take heart in the fact that the 2017 income tax hike vote spurred a political exodus, driven by grassroots participation in the political process. Thirty-three lawmakers already are certain not to return to their seats in 2019, without anyone casting a single ballot.

Speak up. Tell your lawmaker what issues he or she should focus on, and don’t relent.

What’s there to lose?

Lawmakers highlight what they’d like Rauner to address at State of the State ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

Illinois state lawmakers are highlighting what they’d like the governor to address during his State of the State later this month.

Gov. Bruce Rauner delivers his fourth State of the State address Jan. 31 to a joint session of the House and Senate, and one focus could be pensions.

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said how to deal with continued deficit spending is one of the most pressing issues. But the elephant in the room, he said, is Illinois’ worst-in-thenation pension debt.

Illinois lists its unfunded pension liability at $130 billion, though many actuaries say it’s significantly more than that because the state inflates its anticipated return on investments.

Batinick has proposed a pension buyout plan he said could save taxpayers billions of dollars down the road, but the state needs to reverse its trend

of continuous population loss.

“The more people you keep in this state,” Batinick said, “the more that that legacy cost is spread out amongst more people. And the more economic growth you have, the easier it’s going to be to deal with the pension crisis.”

State Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, said pension reform is going to be tough.

“If we’re going to change any pensions, it has to be negotiated with the employees that are going to be affected,” Manar said.

Manar also said he’d like to hear Rauner bring both parties together with healing words to solve the state’s problems.

State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, said as the chairman of the Senate Education Committee, she wants the governor to focus on funding education.

“I think the governor should contin-

ue, he says it, but he needs to act on making education a No. 1 priority,” she said.

State Rep. Avery Bourne, R-Raymond, noted the major strides made for education funding reform already and said she hopes Rauner emphasizes the need for spending reductions.

“We will have to do that in a bipartisan way, but I think that this is an opportunity to come out really strong and say, ‘Here’s the case for why we have to change. Here’s the issues we’ve seen in the past,’” Bourne said.

Partisan gridlock is also an issue, but Bourne said Rauner needs to persuade Democrats of the need for spending controls to shore up the state’s structural budget imbalances.

Two weeks after the State of the State address Jan. 31, Rauner will deliver his third budget address as governor for the coming fiscal year. That address is Feb. 14 in Springfield.

Conroy bill to provide greater protections against hate crimes State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, sponsored legislation that gives courts the power to crack down on hate crimes against places of worship and increase penalties for those convicted of hate crimes. This bill went into effect Jan. 1.

“Our current political climate has seen an increase in divisive rhetoric used by politicians to push forward agendas that infringe on religious freedom. Unfortunately, this climate has fostered an increase in hate crimes targeting religious institutions,” said Conroy. “As legislators, we must ensure that that perpetrators of these heinous crimes receive serious sentences and victims of these

crime get the justice the deserve.”

House Bill 2309 was created in response to incidents of vandalism and racist graffiti targeting houses of worship throughout Illinois. This bill allows police and prosecutors to charge criminals who target religious institutions with a hate crime.

Individuals convicted of committing hate crimes must attend in-person educational classes focused on discouraging hate crimes against the targeted group. Additionally, if community service time is court ordered, the offender must perform the service in the county in which they were convicted of the crime.

The new law also gives judges

the ability to determine if an offender must compensate the victim for damages, based on the severity of the crime suffered by the victim. Parents and legal guardians would also be financially responsible for crimes committed by minors.

“The passing of this bipartisan legislation shows the people of Illinois that we are serious about protecting the religious liberties of our diverse population,” said Conroy.

“We will not let hate crimes become the norm in Illinois. I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure that our state remains a place where people of all faiths can feel welcome and safe.”

What is depressing is not realizing and living each day and each moment as though it is no different from the one before or the one after until they all blur together and nothing stands out.

Now there’s a concept.

I’m not saying every moment of every day for all the rest of the days of our lives should be filled with lollipops, unicorns, infinite insight and all things bright and beautiful. That would be impossible.

But we do have moments that are better than others. And when we do, perhaps we should take note. Realize. Grasp. Savor. Be aware of the goodness surrounding us so we can remember and revisit that state of being at a later time.

Conversely, we can recognize, discern and be aware of negative moments for what they are: moments.

Lingering over negativity (and let’s face it, we all do) literally robs us of an inverse moment we could spend revisiting a joyous occurrence, or better yet, creating and living a new one to add to our arsenal.

Hurt and pain are real and it’s oversimplifying to say we can just “get over it” in a moment or minutes or even days or years. But being cognizant of how we choose to feel and what we choose to focus on can aid in the journey to positivity.

Both joy and pain are basic states of being; they are undeniable parts of life. And while we all probably wish for a little more happiness and a little less angst, neither is a total crime against time.

Wasting it is.

And we do that, not when we are

feeling, but when we are not.

The new plugged-in tendencies of our culture provide a potential sinkhole of wasted time. When we sit in a room with a group of people and no one is talking because they are all staring at their screens, moments are lost.

Our devices make us more productive and that’s good because busy is the new black. Multitasking is a survival strategy. At least it feels that way at my house. But multitasking can be a huge time crime because when we are doing five things at once we are so focused on the whizzing whirr of action surrounding and consuming our to-do list that we fail to realize, grasp or discern the moments as they occur.

Chatting with another person instead of texting. Giving someone a real-live smile instead of an emoji.

Putting the to-do list away to chat with your spouse after work or your son after school. The cashier who tells you to, “Have a nice day,” and seems to really mean it.

Moments in time. Choices we make.

Mundane? Sometimes yes. But if we don’t find meaning in the mundane, then life becomes rather meaningless. And finding joy in the mundane everyday starts with paying attention to it.

Not paying attention – now there’s where the waste comes in.

Hook ‘em, hold ‘em, release ‘em is good advice for fishing and life Being a judge for the international Erma Bombeck Essay Competition is a thrill and honor that never grows old.

The contest is held bi-annually, and entries for 2018 are closed, so this isn’t a hype to encourage you to write an essay. I’m simply ruminating over the entries I was tasked to review. My “pile” held several of what I believe to be contenders and that makes me happy.

I’ve been doing this for several years now and this time had the most that could probably make the cut to the final round. Final Round Judge: Dave Barry.

I, of course, do not get the names of the writers or which move on. I read and score and submit. Each essay is identified by a number and all scoring is done online. When winners are announced, I read the essays to see if any were from my first-round batch. I had a couple that I think could get at least honorable mention.

But many miss the mark. The writers are given clear instruction on how to craft their 450-word essay, including this timeless sage advice from Erma herself: The piece should “Hook ‘em with the lead. Hold ‘em with laughter. Exit with a quip they won’t forget.”

Very few managed to do all three.

I judge essays in the Humor category (the other is Human Interest) and the Humor criteria is obviously: “Is it funny?” It’s surprising how many are not. Alas, during the first readthrough, only a handful made me scribble in my notes “I laughed.”

Erma’s advice is great for storytelling in general, be in print or in person.

Hook ‘em, hold ‘em, and then release them. It’s about being intentional. If you are speaking in front of a group, you don’t have to be a stand-up comic or the king of one-liners. Simply open with an interesting tidbit, throw in something light and humorous (no matter what your topic), and leave them with a lovely nugget of value.

You can do that with a talk, a blog post, a keynote speech, or even your introduction at a networking event.

Hook, hold, release.

The other tidbit that I gathered while judging was simply to follow directions. “Stay on topic.” “Evoke emotion.” That goes with other

time-tested advice to know yourself and know your audience. Apply that to whatever you are doing and gauge your remarks accordingly.

When I first started writing my newspaper column back in 2001, I was funny. I wrote about kids and dog hair and butts and bras and faux pas. My personal episodes were also universal. When you write or tell a story, you want your reader/audience to self-identify. You want to connect.

You want to share a moment. You want to improve their day, even if just for a minute. Hook, hold, release.

Know that your interactions, whether in writing or speaking, can have impact and uplift someone else. Good juju will come back to you in return.

When I started writing in 2001, never could I have imagined where it would take me. Erma Bombeck was already gone, and here we are now, all these years later, and I am still learning from her. Being a judge for the contest that bears her name is a privilege that never grows old. Thanks, Erma.

Conroy chairs Committee House Hearing on Insurance Coverage for Addiction Treatment

Continuing her efforts to raise awareness about the opioid crisis and hold insurance companies accountable, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, convened the House Mental Health Committee to discuss inequity in insurance coverage for addiction treatment.

“Our hearing in December reaffirmed the committee’s understanding that the lack of insurance parity in Illinois is a large barrier to treatment for those who struggle with addiction,” said Conroy, who chairs the committee.

“It has been 10 years since the federal parity law was signed and in that time we have seen the opioid addiction reach epidemic proportions. The Illinois Department of Public Health released a report that shows that overdoses continue to rise, Narcan use is way up, and deaths continue to rise but hospital admittance is down. The lack of parity enforcement directly contributes to the rising numbers.”

Both the federal government and the state of Illinois have laws in place to require insurance companies to provide the same coverage for mental health and addiction treatment as they would for any other health treatment.

Even with these laws in place, expert panelists shared their struggles with insurance parity in the Illinois insurance market.

Dr. Tom Britton of the Gateway Foundation, an organization dedicated to alcohol and drug treatment, spoke about his struggles with insurance providers when trying to provide the most effective treatment plans for his patients. Critical treatments are withheld until insurance companies approve them, which can take up to 48 hours.

Insurance companies can “claw-back” on services that have already been approved for coverage and require patients to pay back the cost of the services received. Luke Thomsha of the Perfectly Flawed Foundation stated that his insurance company would only cover seven days of the minimum 30 days he would need at a recovery facility to avoid relapsing.

Legislators questioned the practice of the Department of Insurance in light of a report by the Kennedy Forum, which highlights the lack of insurance compliance for mental health and addiction treatment. Of the 8,000 consumer complaints received by the department last year, only 37 were for mental health or addiction related treatments, raising concerns as to how the Department of Insurance can proactively enforce parity laws and ensure that customers who are being denied coverage are aware of their ability to file a complaint.

“It is not the patients’ job to enforce the laws. That responsibility belongs to the Department of Insurance. I want to thank the Kennedy Forum for their commitment to this issue,” said Conroy.

“The House Mental Health Committee will continue to fight this issue and hold the Department of Insurance accountable for enforcing mental health and addiction parity. This is about the treatment and care of our brain health. Parity dictates that insurance companies treat it that same as any other health issue.”

Former teacher sentenced to ten years for possession of child pornography DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Glendale Heights Chief of Police Douglas Flint announced recently that a former Cook County elementary school teacher has been sentenced to ten years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for possessing child pornography. Andrew Clarke , 29, of 179 Golfview, Glendale Heights, entered a plea of guilty to two counts of Possession of Child Pornography (Class 2 Felony) this afternoon in front of Judge John Kinsella, who handed down the sentence. Clarke, who was out on bond after posting $20,000 of

his $200,000 bond, was immediately taken into custody following today’s court appearance.

In January 2016, as part of an ongoing investigation into the possession and dissemination of child pornography, authorities with the Illinois Children’s Advocacy Centers, with assistance from the Elmhurst and Glendale Heights Police Departments, identified a computer in DuPage County that was downloading files containing child pornography.

Through the course of their investigation, detectives were led to Clarke where it was discovered that he was

IDPH shows flu dip; doctor says Illinois still in midst of flu season

The latest report on the flu in Illinois shows a dip in the number of people getting sick. But one doctor said Illinois’ flu season is not slowing down yet.

Dr. Brian Curtis, director of Physician Practice for OSF HealthCare Medical Group, said that the latest report from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) showing a dip in flu cases for the first week of the year isn’t a sign that flu season has peaked.

“Usually the flu season will last two to three weeks, then come down,” Curtis said. “And then, about two to three weeks later you get a second spike, a second wave of illnesses that come through.”

The latest IDPH report says 218 people went to the emergency room in the first week of 2018. The season total is now more than 600.

Curtis said that most of the people who’ve already gotten sick in Illinois are either very old or very young.

He said the latest outbreak is among middle-aged folks, which can cause some of its own problems.

“The big thing is that if you are sick, you need to stay home,” Curtis said. “Don’t try and tough it out.

So why is this flu season so early, and so strong? Curtis said blame the flu vaccine.

“Usually the flu vaccine is 50 percent to 60 percent effective. Now you’re looking at 20 percent to 30 percent effective,” Curtis said. “So you’re going to have a worse flu season.”

Curtis said even if the vaccine is only 20 percent to 30 percent effective, that’s better than not getting a flu shot at all.

The Center for Disease Control’s latest flu report says every state but Hawaii is reporting widespread flu activity, and the number of flu cases across the country is starting to level off but not decline.

this case is beyond disgusting,” Berlin said. “Every time one of these images is downloaded or shared on the Internet, child pornography claims another young, innocent victim. To protect these innocent victims, my office stands ready to vigorously prosecute any allegations of child pornography. Clarke was sentenced to five years on each count with the sentences to run consecutively.

Katie Kempke, a certified medical assistant in Elmhurst Clinic’s pediatrics practice, recently donated 100 chemo bags to Elmhurst Hospital’s Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center.

The bags include items to help patients during cancer therapy.

“We wanted to do something to directly give back to the community,” says Kempke, who, with support from family and friends, made the donation through the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation. “I have worked at Elmhurst Clinic for

10 years and my family and I have been patients at Elmhurst Hospital forever.”

DuPage Care Center seeks Valentine donations for residents The DuPage Care Center is offering the community an opportunity to send Valentine wishes to Center residents.

For a $3 donation, community members can send a Valentine balloon to a Care Center resident to spread cheer and warm wishes. Last year, the public sent more than 1,000 heart-shaped, helium balloons to line the corridors and rooms on Valentine’s Day. Volunteers and staff delivered the balloons to more than 350 residents living at the Center, brightening their days and bringing lots of smiles along the way.

Historian finds rare artifact linked to Abraham Lincoln ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

A fragile object tucked away in a room of unknown historical treasures has been found and it is tied to one of the most well-thought-of presidents in U.S. history, Abraham Lincoln.

Sandy Vasko, director of the Will County Historical Society, discovered a dried rose a few weeks ago that she said was on the funeral bier of Abraham Lincoln when his remains were at the capitol in Washington D.C. on April 20, 1865.

The flower is fairly rare, according to Vasko. She knows of only one other group of flowers and they are in the Library of Congress.

Vasko said the flower was given to General Isham Haynie of Illinois, who was a good friend of Lincoln’s and may have been by his bedside when he died.

General Haynie presented it to Mrs. James G. Elwood, who lived in suburban Joliet. Her husband, James Elwood, was the mayor of Joliet and a civil war veteran.

The Historical Society received some of Elwood’s possessions and the flower was inside one of his boxes.

In 1971, the Will County Historical Society moved into the building they occupy now. Many of their boxes were put in closets and attics, and were soon forgotten.

Vasko had been tasked with looking through those rooms and, a

few weeks ago, she discovered the dried rose.

“For a museum director to find this kind of incredible artifact, it is so lucky,” Vasko said. “When I was touching it and handling it, it was like electricity. It was just so amazing.”

Vasko said a few lucky people will soon get the opportunity to see the flower.

“The first thing we’re going to do is have a sneak peek,” Vasko said. “On Feb. 17, we’re going to allow 50 lucky people to come in this building and view it firsthand.”

After the viewing, the flower will be put back in a safe and won’t be displayed again until about June, according to Vasko.

Vasko said she and the museum staff are working to make the flower available for Illinois’ Bicentennial.

“You have to be approved,” Vasko said. “We started the process a week ago, but being incorporated, everyone has to look at it and see it and approve it.”

She also wants people to be aware of what hidden treasures could possibly be in their homes.

“There are so many attics in the state of Illinois that have boxes full of things,” Vasko said. “Don’t let them sit there. Look through them.

Elmhurst Academy celebrates Kid Inventors’ Day with creativity, ingenuity and innovation

Elmhurst Academy students put on their thinking caps, adjusted their goggles, and brought to life their own inventions in celebration of the national Kid Inventors’ Day. This day commemorates the birthday of all-around genius and kid inventor, Benjamin Franklin and celebrates kid inventors around the world. It also aims to encourage children to be curious about the world around them and to be creative when solving problems. The academy students used their own ingenuity as well as group collaboration to experience the thrill of invention in the classroom.

They brainstormed their own unique inventions by sketching sets of detailed blueprints and then constructed 3D models using recyclable resources. With the help of parent volunteers, the students used hammers, nails, drills, and other tools to build these complete inventions.

Roskam named chair of Subcommittee on Health Ways and Means

After serving as one of the leading voices ushering through the most significant tax reform in over three decades, U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (IL06) has now been named as the new chairman of the Subcommittee on Health on Ways and Means.

Roskam served as chairman of the Subcommittee on Tax Policy last year and was one of the architects of the historic Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which has already lead a great number of employers to offer bonuses, pay raises and new investments as a result of the new law.

During the tax reform debate, Rep. Roskam was a strong advocate for small businesses, middle- and low-

er- income families and taxpayers throughout his district.

As chairman of the Subcommittee on Health, Roskam will lead the subcommittee in its work under its jurisdiction that includes Medicare and tax credit and deduction provisions of the Internal Revenue Code dealing with health insurance premiums and health care costs.

“I’m honored to be named chairman of the Subcommittee on Health at this critical time for thoughtful health policy,” said Roskam. “Our health care system has been broken for many years, and it’s important that we get this right. I’m focused on the needs of our families and what changes we can

Roskam has been a member of the Committee on Ways and Means since 2009 and had previously served as chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee, during which time he led bipartisan investigations and legislative activity that has resulted in millions of dollars of wrongly seized funds being returned by the IRS and Department of Justice to hundreds of small business owners.

Roskam will continue to serve as a member of the Subcommittee on Tax Policy.

Lawmaker proposes law to let people rescue dogs from hot cars Leaving a dog inside your car in the summer could soon mean a broken window in Illinois.

Illinois is one of 24 states without a Good Samaritan law that allows people to rescue pets from hot cars. But that could change by the summer.

State Rep. David Olsen, R-Downers Grove, is pushing a plan to allow people to bust out a car window to rescue a hot dog from a hot car, and avoid any criminal liability.

Olsen said the idea is to let people help.

“If people act in good faith, in consultation with law enforcement,” Olsen said recently. “This legislation is reasonable. It doesn’t allow for random acts of violence or criminal damage to property.”

Olsen said his legislation requires that people call the police before breaking a window, and then to wait with the dog at the car until police arrive.

“We’re looking to save animals and not make somebody liable for a lot of money, when they are just trying to be a Good Samaritan and help out,” Olsen said.

Olsen’s legislation comes after the Illinois News Network reported on Illinois’ law regarding hot dogs in cars last summer.

Olsen admits hot dogs are not as important as Illinois’ pension crisis, but he adds that animal laws are more real to a lot of people in the state.

“I wish every plan that I introduced got this much enthusiasm, when we’re talking about pension reform, or saving money for the state of Illinois and making our state more fiscally responsible,” Olsen said. “I’d hope that would evoke the same emotions. But ultimately, people have such a strong connection with their dogs, their cats, their pets. And that emotional connection is really, really important.”

Biggs said the state does not have any cost associated with the program, because posters are provided to the Illinois EPA by the National Safety Council.

Cronin impresses with State of County address

DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin delivered his “State of the County” address at a luncheon held on Wednesday, Jan. 10, to a group of about 125 business and community leaders, many from area Chambers of Commerce.

He began by stating that one of the most important topics the County Board keeps in mind over the course of their meetings and deliberations throughout the year is economic development, not only to bring in new businesses, but also to retain existing companies in the area. The latest accomplishments in this area include a new Hungarian Airline that serves 40 different countries which is coming to DuPage County.

Also in November, 2017, a Portuguese mobility services business relocated its world headquarters in Colorado to DuPage County. The company, A-to-Be, was awarded a contract to supply the Illinois Tollway with 270 Automatic Toll Payment Machines (ATPMs), which will improve service to tollway users, while saving the Illinois Tollway Authority significant operational costs. They are moving into a brand new building and will be adding 455 new jobs.

It was no surprise when he pointed out that healthcare was currently the largest and fastest growing industry in the County, as it is throughout the country as the Baby-Boomer generation moves into retirement age.

No increase in tax “The best news I have to report is, this year, the County portion of your tax bill did not go up,” Cronin said. “Our property tax level remains flat and has for the past 10-15 years.”

He said there had been a reduction in sales tax of a quarter-cent as well, stemming from the “sunset” of the DuPage Water Commission.

“We are doing everything we can [to maintain] a low tax environment,” Cronin said, “and we are doing it without taxing a soda.”

More consolidation of governmental units Cronin has championed many efforts to consolidate governmental units, which has become the hallmark of his political career.

His latest action will come in the form of an advisory question on the ballot in the next election, asking voters whether they would support consolidating the DuPage Election Commission with the County Clerk’s office.

An advisory question means it will serve to get voters’ opinions on the matter, not pass a law set in stone. The move would save $3 million, Cronin said.

The new consolidated headquarters of DuCOMM was next on Cronin’s list to discuss.

“It will be the County’s headquarters for communication,” he said. “There will be safety experts work in a collaborative effort with Homeland Security and other agencies.”

Again, it comes down to too many layers of government, which Cronin illustrated in a comical fashion by showing a political cartoon of a little boy flat on his back in the snow, flailing his arms and legs in an attempt to stand up. The caption read, “Too many layers, too many layers!” It was a nod to the movie A Christmas Story, in which the main character Ralphie’s little brother Randy is so bundled up in winter clothing, he can hardly move; then he falls in the snow and cannot stand up.

For Randy, it was layers of clothing and layers of snow; for Illinois, it’s 7,000 layers of government.

“The sheer number of government units assures us the highest property taxes,” Cronin said. “We’re in a tough business climate but our unemployment rate is at 3.9%. I want to further explore more public-private partnerships.”

He also said he’d like to see more citizen initiative, more input.

“We need to get the public’s input on consolidation,” he said. “We want to ask citizens, ‘do we really need this program or service?’”

Progress on the western access to O’Hare project When someone in the audience asked about the progress with western access to O’Hare, Cronin noted it was a $3.4 billion project, but that he was optimistic it was moving in the right direction. The City of Chicago is currently renegotiating leases with the airlines at O’Hare.

“The City doesn’t want to impose too much on the airlines because they want them to stay,” Cronin said. “There are wonderful opportunities out there, but it’s a delicate dance.”

The last mile Finally, Cronin spoke briefly about transportation around the County and the role played by the PACE Board.

“The challenge remains what we call ‘the last mile,’” he said. “Sure, we’ve got trains to Elmhurst, Hinsdale, many DuPage communities, but then, how do you get to Oak Brook or wherever your final destination may be?

It is especially an issue for seniors and the disabled. We need to find ways to get people from the train to their final destination. It’s a new way of thinking about transportation.”

Timothy Christian boys basketball team defeats IC Catholic Prep Trojans push winning streak to three; Cap off first round of conference 6-0

After an eye-opening experience at the York Jack Tosh Holiday Classic where it went 1-3, the Timothy Christian boys basketball team has quickly righted the ship

The Trojans were recent winners against Guerin Prep and crosstown neighbor IC Catholic Prep to push their winning streak to three to start the new year. Through late last week, Timothy stood at 12-4 overall and with the win against Guerin, completed the first round of play in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division with a perfect 6-0 mark.

In a 67-49 win over Guerin, the Trojans led 17-16 after the first quarter and 38-27 at halftime. Timothy

outscored Guerin 24-10 in the third quarter to pull away.

“We defended very well in the third quarter,” said Timothy coach Scott Plasier. “We were able to get the ball into Brandon (Orange) pretty well in the third and we scored at a high rate and that opened up things for others.

We got on a roll and built things with a good third quarter. That solidified things for us. We moved the ball, defended well and got the ball inside in that quarter.”

Orange had 22 points in the game on 11 of 14 shooting. Michael Thomas added 20 points on 9 of 13 shooting. The Trojans shot 56 percent from the field in the contest.

Sophomore Matt Owens added nine points. Orange also had 13 rebounds, while Ty Merrick pulled in seven rebounds and junior Danardo Jones had six rebounds. Merrick also had eight assists, while Thomas had seven assists. Timothy had 25 assists on its 31 made baskets, backing up

York boys basketball team fares well at Wheaton-Warrenville South tournament Dukes run record to 3-1 against strong competition

The York boys basketball team came out of the challenging environment of playing four games in three days at the Wheaton-Warrenville South Martin Luther King Jr. tournament quite well.

The Dukes opened the event with a 73-51 win over Chicago University High. York led 13-11 after one quarter and 28-20 at intermission. The Dukes used a big 29-14 third quarter to seal it.

Angelo Martucci led the Dukes with 14 points, while Erik Cohn had 13 points. Sam Walsh chipped in 11 points and Nick Kosich had nine points in a balanced scoring attack.

Cohn drained three of York’s eight 3-pointers. Patrick Baer made two 3-pointers. Walsh had five rebounds, while Kosich had four. Nate Shockey had five steals, while Kosich, Martucci and Jeff Grace each had three. York had 19 steals and forced U-High into 25 turnovers.

The Dukes then edged host WWS 41-39 in overtime. After playing to an 8-8 tie in the first quarter, WWS held a 20-17 lead heading into halftime. York trailed 29-24 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored WWS 12-7 in the final frame and 5-3 in overtime to win it.

Cohn led the Dukes with 12 points, while Kosich had 11 points. Martucci finished with eight points. Walsh and John Milling each had five points.

Kosich made three 3-pointers, while Cohn made two. York made six 3s in the game. Cohn had six rebounds, while Kosich had five. Milling had three assists and Martucci had three steals.

York then dropped a tough 37-36 game to Benet Academy at WWS. Benet led 11-7 after the first quarter and 21-19 at halftime. Benet held a

29-26 lead heading into the fourth and held off a York comeback.

Martucci and Cohn each scored nine points, while Kosich had seven points. Shockey finished with five points. Cohn had six rebounds, while Martucci had five rebounds. Kosich had three assists and five steals. Milling had three steals. York had 11 steals in the game and forced 15 turnovers. The Dukes shot 32.6 percent from the field and held Benet to 38.4 percent. York hit 5 of 10 free throws.

In the final game at WWS, York rolled against Niles Notre Dame to the tune of a 62-40 win to finish 3-1 in the tournament.

York led 12-10 after the first quarter and then exploded on a 28-6 run in the second quarter to put the game out of hand at 40-16. York outscored Notre Dame 18-15 in the third quarter.

Kosich led the Dukes with 18 points and was one of four players in double digits. Martucci had 15 points, while Shockey and Cohn each scored 11 points. They accounted for 55 of the team’s 62 points. Kosich hit three 3-pointers and shot 7-for-8 from the field. Martucci was 7-for-10 shooting, while Shockey was 4-for-6 and Cohn 5-for-9. York hit on 59.5 percent of its shots.

Martucci added five rebounds, while Walsh had four. Martucci had five assists and four steals. York had 14 steals and forced 27 turnovers.

“It was a real positive weekend for the kids,” said York coach Vince Doran. “It’s one of the best Martin Luther King tournaments in the state.

There are a lot of very competitive teams there. It’s great competition.”

Doran liked his team’s toughness in playing so many games in a short timeframe. “When you play five games in three days, that’s really challenging, especially when you are at this level of competition,” he said. “The kids did a great job staying mentally tough. It’s physically taxing and it wears on you mentally.

The kids did a great job of having a

good mental mindset to play. If you can do that, good things are going to happen.”

York’s defense also impressed its coach. “Our defense was great,” he said. “We were holding people in the 30s and low 40s. We beat Wheaton-Warrenville South in a game that hinged on every possession. Our defense creates a lot of offense for us and gives us opportunities. Everybody we played in that tournament we turned over to some extent, which was a good thing.”

Doran also cited strong offensive play at various times in the tournament. “The kids stepped up,” he said.

“We had a really strong third quarter against Notre Dame and at times really gelled offensively. We still need to be more consistent there. Notre Dame was a talented team and we were up 30 to 40 points. You have to be doing well to do that.”

Kosich, Cohn and Martucci were cited for strong tournament play.

“They did all kinds of things for us,” said Doran. “They all were excellent in different areas. They complement each other well. They all stood out for us.”

York was 12-7 overall after the tournament. “A tournament like that gets you ready to play in tough games,” said Doran. “We feel like we are battle-tested. We were able to see different styles of play. We went to Buffalo Wild Wings between games.

It’s a well-run tournament and if you love basketball you spend Saturday and Monday there playing. Our kids love the game.”

In earlier action, York was a 53-49 West Suburban Conference Silver Division winner against Hinsdale Central. York led 13-3 after the first quarter and 22-11 at halftime. Hinsdale outscored York 17-12 in the third and 21-19 in the fourth quarter.

The win moved York to 2-2 in conference play.

Cohn and Kosich led the Dukes with 15 points each. Martucci had 11 points. Cohn and Kosich each made

three 3-pointers. Kosich had seven rebounds, while Martucci had six.

Shockey had four assists and Kosich had two steals.

In a 66-61 overtime loss to Oak Park-River Forest in WSC Silver play, York trailed 16-11 in the first quarter and tied it at 26-26 going into halftime. Oak Park-River Forest held a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and York outscored the Huskies 13-12 in the fourth to force the extra session.

Kosich had 17 points to lead the Dukes, while Cohn had 16 points.

Shockey and Martucci each had nine points and Walsh scored eight points.

Cohn and Walsh each had four rebounds. Shockey had seven assists and Cohn had two steals. York shot 61.8 percent from the field, while holding Oak Park-River Forest to 45.8 percent from the field. York made 9 of 14 free throws, while the Huskies hit 20 of 27 foul attempts.

Through 19 games, Kosich was leading the team in scoring at 12.4 points per game. Cohn was at 10.9, while Martucci was at 9.7. Shockey was at 6.3 and Walsh at 5.7. Kosich was tops in 3-pointers made with 43 (39.8 percent), while Cohn had 32 threes (41.6 percent). Cohn was at 75.8 percent from the free-throw line (25 of 33), while Kosich was shooting 70 percent (21 of 30). John Milling had less attempts but was 16 of 17 for 94.1 percent and Grace had hit 13 of his first 14 attempts to check in at 92.9 percent. Kosich was tops in steals with 40. York was shooting 43.9 percent as a team and had a turnover ratio of plus-108. York had had committed 249 turnovers and opponents turned the ball over 357 times.

Of York’s seven losses through 19 games, six have been by less than 10 points, including setbacks of one point (Benet Academy, 37-36), two points (Downers Grove North, 58-56, two overtimes), five points (OPRF, 66-61 in overtime) and seven points (Benet Academy, 42-35).

Timothy then hosted IC Catholic Prep in a MSC crossover game. The Trojans continued their momentum from the Guerin game and got out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter. Timothy led 26-12 at halftime and withstood a fourth-quarter IC Catholic rally. The Knights outscored Timothy 22-15 in the final stanza.

“IC was a good win for us,” said Plasier. “We played really good basketball for three quarters. And as is typical in some games when a team gets down they come back and play like gangbusters in the last quarter. IC did that and played very well in the fourth quarter and made it tight. After three quarters they had only 20 points.

We did a good job on defense and made enough plays and made enough free throws to hold on. The boys battled hard and we still held them to 42 points, but 20 points through three quarters. It was a good effort.”

Plasier said his team did a good job of keying on IC Catholic Prep’s ball screen. “They like to run the court with that ball screen and we did a good job defending that,” he said. “We made them do a couple other things to look for baskets. We responded well and kept them to one shot for the most part. They had no easy baskets. We got out on them early and then played even in the second quarter. We were crisp that first quarter. We shot well and that gave us enough of a lead to hold on at the end.”

Thomas had 17 points for Timothy, while Merrick, Owens and Orange each had nine points. Timothy shot 47 percent from the field and also hit eight 3-pointers with Merrick, Owens and Thomas each draining a pair of 3s.

Thomas was 5-for-6 from the foul line, while Merrick was 3-for-4. Senior Nick Huisman, returning from injury, led the Trojans with seven rebounds, while Orange had six rebounds. Owens had four assists.

“Michael Thomas offensively played well in both the Guerin and IC games,” said Plasier. “Brandon scored the ball against Guerin and against IC had one of his best defensive efforts since I’ve been coaching him. We also had good minutes out of Ty Merrick who did a good job rebounding and playing defense. He also knocked down some big shots.”

Plasier said the return of Huisman also made a difference. “Getting Nick Huisman back after him being out six weeks was good,” the coach said. “He played some really good minutes as well against IC.” Timothy knocked out a pair of MSC crossover games against Illiana Christian and Wheaton Academy recently and will head south to Chicago Christian Friday to open the second round of MSC Red play.

It’s been a trying season to say the least for the IC Catholic Prep girls basketball season.

Coach Kelsey James noted her team has been felled by injuries and sicknesses throughout the campaign.

Standout Claire Gibler has not played in a game yet this season but was scheduled to be cleared medically earlier this week, James noted.

Kiersten King, who it was anticipated would pick up the scoring slack in Gibler’s absence suffered a shoulder injury early in the season and missed a month.

“It’s been a rough year,” said James. “We’ve been battling some injuries and have been battling some sicknesses where we’re down players. Every week it’s been something different.”

IC Catholic Prep was 6-14 overall and 1-5 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play through late last week.

In recent play, the Knights lost 4938 to Aurora Central Catholic in conference action and dropped a 55-13

MSC Blue game to Glenbard South.

“We’ve gotten better at playing more as a team as things have gone on,” said James. “We’ve done more team stuff.”

Individually, point guard Jaida Smith and King, a guard-forward, have been two bright spots for the Knights thus far.

“Jaida is having a good year,” said James. “She’s probably been our most consistent player. She’s been averaging four assists and four steals for us. She’s been doing a lot of work.

Kiersten has been having a good year as well. She’s been battling injury, so we haven’t had her every game. She attacks the basket for us and gives us a lot of good looks for layups and gets a lot of offensive rebounds.”

During the holiday, the Knights went 2-2 at a tournament in Bloomington. IC Catholic Prep scored wins against Leroy and Fairbury Prairie Central. “We shared the ball really well in the tournament,” said James.

“We finished both games we won with about 15 assists and we played really good team defense.”

James said the return of Gibler will be a nice boost for the team. “Claire did most of our scoring,” said James.

“We had to adjust who would do the scoring. Kiersten was scoring and then she was out for about a month.

Claire hasn’t played this year. It will

make a big difference.”

James noted around Christmas time the IC Catholic Prep staff figured out the team had exactly one practice up to that point where everyone was in attendance due to injuries and illnesses.

“We’ve had to take our lumps as the year has gone on,” she said.

Despite the tough go of it, James has been pleased with the team’s demeanor. “It’s a great group of girls.

They definitely keep you on your toes,” she said. “They stay motivated and they come to play. They come in with a positive mindset, but the losing gets hard.”

The Knights have Riverside-Brookfield and Illiana Christian this week in MSC Blue play. IC Catholic Prep will host a regional this year and will find out regional seeding on Jan. 27.

“Being at home hosting regional will be beneficial to us,” she said.

“Hopefully we will be healthy going into the playoffs.”

James noted the school’s recent Coaches vs. Cancer event that featured IC Catholic Prep boys and girls basketball games throughout the day was a major success. “We had a great turnout for it,” said James.

“We raised a lot of money and all the teams had a good time. It was a fun night for everyone.”

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team’s season-long improvement continued recently.

The Trojans racked up wins against Lisle, Chicago Christian and Elmwood Park to move to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

In a 35-25 non-conference triumph over Lisle, Timothy led 6-0 after the first quarter and 15-6 at halftime. The Trojans extended their lead thanks to a 14-4 run in the third quarter.

Jordyn Strube and Olivia Schuringa each had seven points to lead Timothy. Emily DeBoer added six points, while Lauren Gehrke and Hannah Schuringa each had five points. Sureya Alex had four assists, DeBoer had four rebounds.

Timothy also was a 71-53 MSC Red winner over Chicago Christian.

The Trojans led 18-11 after the first quarter and 37-28 at halftime. Timothy iced it with an 21-11 outburst in the fourth quarter.

Hannah Schuringa, a freshman, led the Trojans with 17 points. Alex had 12 points, while Olivia Schuringa

had 10 points, Strube had nine points and Heidi Westra had eight points.

Alex hit four 3-pointers in the game, while Olivia Schuringa shot 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Timothy shot 42 percent from the field. Abby Carstensen had five assists. Hannah Schuringa added nine rebounds, as did DeBoer. Olivia Schuringa had six rebounds. Carstensen had three steals.

In a 58-14 MSC Red win over Elmwood Park, Timothy led 20-0 after the first quarter and 39-5 at halftime.

Timothy outscored Elmwood 18-0 in the third quarter.

Strube had 16 points for Timothy, while Hannah Schuringa had 12 points and Olivia Schuringa and DeBoer each scored 10 points. Westra had five assists, while Carstensen had four assists. DeBoer finished with seven rebounds. Westra had seven steals, while Carstensen had four steals. Timothy had 25 steals and 24 deflections.

“The girls have been doing great,” said Timothy Christian coach Michele Strube. “They are so much more confident. Chicago Christian is a much-improved team since we played them in the beginning of December. It was back and forth. We were up 10 and then down by a point in the third quarter and then we went crazy and had a 20-point lead at one point. Our guards are scoring and our

posts our scoring. It’s been a great team effort. They all look to get each other the ball. It’s a great team that way. We’ve had a lot of different girls score. I love it when we have even scoring where everybody is scoring eight to 10 points a game. The Chicago Christian game was fun.”

And then Timothy limited Elmwood Park to five points through three quarters. “The girls worked on a lot of different things on offense and defense,” said Strube.

Strube said a key emphasis of late has been confidence. “We want them to keep playing confident going into regionals,” she said. “If we keep playing with confidence and as a team, hopefully we can go far.

It’s a special team. They don’t see what they have yet, but Jon (assistant coach Strube) and I do.”

Strube noted Hannah Schuringa continues to play well at the varsity level as a freshman. She also lauded the work of seniors Olivia Schuringa and DeBoer. “Those two seniors have been fantastic,” she said. “They are solid between rebounding, scoring and just being leaders on the court.”

The IC Catholic Prep boys hoops squad performed well on both ends of the court in two recent wins.

The Knights were 74-42 Metro Suburban Conference crossover winners against Walther Christian and also 56-39 MSC crossover winners against St. Edward. IC Catholic Prep also lost to Timothy Christian by a 50-42 count recently.

“St. Edward is a pretty good rivalry for us,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “That game did have implications in terms of seeding for the playoffs because we’ve played them head-to-head now.”

In the win against St. Edward, Alex Meurer had 19 points, while Kevin Cheng scored 18 points. Nico Gaudio added nine points and Ryan Wojtalewicz had seven points. Meurer made three 3-pointers, while Gaudio hauled in 11 rebounds. Meurer had six rebounds.

“Alex and Kevin were excellent,” said Tyrrell. “It was one of Alex’s best games all-around. He guarded St. Ed’s best player and stuck with him. He did a great job containing him in the second half. That player had 17 points in the first half and six in the second half when Alex was not helping off him. It was a nice win for us.

We made up some good ground.”

After the Timothy loss, IC Catholic Prep was at 13-6 overall. The Knights were 3-3 through the first round of MSC Blue Division play.

“We’re a little disappointed with the 3-3 conference record in the first half,” said Tyrrell. “Hopefully we can keep everybody together and focused. If we win out and Riverside-Brookfield loses two games, we would end up with the conference championship. We still are very much in the race. R-B has one loss and Wheaton Academy has two losses. R-B’s loss was to us and Glenbard South has two losses. It will be a fun way to end the season.”

Tyrrell also praised the work of Gaudio and Wojtalewicz, a sophomore. “Nico Gaudio is playing extremely strong,” the coach said.

“He’s doing things that go unnoticed. Rebounding-wise he is undersized, but he’s big in terms of his strength. He’s stronger than pretty much anybody he faces. He’s extremely smart. He uses his body on offense and defense and does a lot of things for us.

“With Khali Saunders out the last two games, Ryan has played outstanding. He dominated in the post against Walther. We kept dumping it down to him and he finished strong. It’s nice to see Ryan playing with confidence.”

Tyrrell said this season has been especially rewarding because of the chemistry on the team between the players. “This has been a fun season,” he said. “It’s a great group of seniors. We’re winding down to the last four weeks. I don’t want it to end.”

The St. Edward game also was part of the school’s Coaches vs.

Cancer annual event that featured boys’ and girls’ basketball games throughout the day at IC Catholic Prep. “It’s an outstanding community event that is made possible by many volunteers,” said Tyrrell.

“There were various fundraisers throughout the day that helped raise money for the American Cancer Society. We raised more than $5,000 for the day. The boys’ and girls’ games went back and forth all day and we had an all-program mass at church and then we watched the girls’ varsity play and then we played at 8:30 p.m.”

IC Catholic Prep played Fenton in a MSC Blue game earlier this week. The Knights head to Aurora Saturday to face Aurora Christian. Tyrrell noted as of late last week Aurora Christian was one of only two teams left in the Chicago area with no losses. “Aurora Christian is a Class 1A school and is very talented,” he said.

The IC Catholic Prep-Aurora Christian contest has been designated as a Comcast Game of the Week. The game will air the next day (Sunday, Jan. 28) on Comcast Channel 100 at noon and 4 p.m.

Through 18 games, Cheng was leading the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game, while Meurer was at 12 points per game. Saunders was averaging 10 points a game, while Gaudio was at 8.5 points.

Cheng was tops in 3-pointers made with 19, while Meurer was at 18 (50 percent accuracy). Gaudio was shooting 56 percent from the field (50 of 90), while Cheng was at 72 percent from the foul line with 76 makes in 106 attempts. Saunders was the team’s leading rebounder at 6.6 a contest. Gaudio was tops in assists with 33, while Cheng had a team-high 23 steals.

our defense. They tried to pressure us in the third quarter and we took advantage of some great passes up the floor and we finished in transition.”

York outscored Maine South 24-9 in the third quarter. “That was a little different than the third quarter against St. Viator,” Collings pointed out.

Collings lauded the recent play of leading scorer Danielle Dennis, along with the likes of Caylin Rufus, Matty Stark and Kathleen Levins.

Those four represent York’s top four scorers.

Stark is the team’s third-leading scorer thanks to a recent barrage of strong games. “Matty Stark has really stepped it up for us,” said Collings.

“In her last nine games she’s averaging more than 11 points a game.

That’s huge for us. She’s been that outside threat for us along with Danielle. Kathleen Levins also has been great. She had seven points against Maine South and was a big spark for us. It was great to see our top three scorers be our top three scorers in the same game. Maine South was that game. In fact, our top four scorers all played well in that game.”

The win against Maine South left York at 14-6 overall. The Dukes were 6-2 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play through their first eight contests—four remain.

In the win against Maine South, Dennis had her 23 points, which included two 3-pointers and a 3-for-2 effort from the free-throw line. Rufus had 16 points, while Stark had 10 points, which included two 3-pointers. Levins finished with seven points.

York shot 11 of 16 from the free-throw line and sank four 3-pointers.

Sears created modern retail in Illinois

As the home of Sears since the late 19th century, Illinois is the birthplace of modern retail.

Even today’s colossus, Amazon, can trace the roots of its business model to Sears’ original mail-order business that popularized the notion of buying products at home without first seeing and touching them in person.

“There were some small mail-order companies before, but Sears became the largest, the most successful, the giant,” said Libby Mahoney, senior curator of the Chicago History Museum.

And if it seems strange that such a retailer could grow strong enough to make its headquarters the tallest building in the world as Sears did in Chicago in 1973, consider today’s intense competition among cities to house Amazon’s second headquarters, she said.

It was Chicago’s central position in the nation’s railroad and highway networks that made it a better place for Richard Sears to operate the mail-order watch company he’d started in Minneapolis the previous year, 1886.

In Chicago, Sears partnered with watchmaker Alvah C. Roebuck, leading to the longtime name of the firm being Sears, Roebuck and Co. Its first catalog featuring only watches and jewelry was published in 1888, while its first large catalog of general merchandise came along in 1896.

Sears wooed customers with promises of savings gained by eliminating the middleman. It popularized the money-back guarantee to build trust with the consumer, Mahoney said.

The gradual diversification of the company’s products seemed to know no bounds, perhaps best illustrated by the advent of Sears Modern Homes.

Between 1908 and 1940, Sears sold about 75,000 such homes around the country by mail-order.

Many of the homes, which came in 447 different designs, exist today.

Such a company at that time was largely dependent on the U.S. Post Office for its success and reliability, Mahoney said.

But eventually, Sears, Roebuck’s original mail-order business began to be threatened by the greater urbanization of the country after World War I. The solution—championed by then-vice president and future company President Robert E. Wood— was the introduction of brick-andmortar stores in the 1920s.

Many other innovations followed under Wood’s guidance, including getting into the insurance business during the Great Depression with the creation of Allstate Insurance. Like several other Sears-created brands, Allstate eventually would be spun off as an independent company, but not until 1993.

Although Sears has never been a manufacturer, its brands such as Craftsman tools, Kenmore appliances and DieHard batteries helped build the company’s reputation.

Even as the biggest of all, Sears didn’t take customer loyalty for granted, Mahoney said.

“They were really trying to improve the appearance of their products and make them stylish in the 1930s,” Mahoney said. “I think they were really savvy merchants.”

The nation’s economic recovery after World War II was what enabled such imitators as Kmart, Target and Kohl’s, but probably not until the 1970s or 1980s did they start to have a significant impact on Sears’ business, Mahoney said.

Even in the mail-order years, Chicago-based Montgomery Ward was the country’s distant second-place retailer, despite having started earlier.

“Sears always seemed to have the upper hand,” Mahoney said. Nevertheless, Montgomery Ward’s successfully carved a niche for itself by

deliberately selling different products than Sears did, she added.

For the past 25 years, Sears has made its home at the 780-acre Prairie Stone Business Park it created on the west side of Hoffman Estates.

Though the now-vanished Poplar Creek Music Theater was probably the first name that put Hoffman Estates on the regional map, Sears was an even bigger one, Mayor Bill McLeod said.

“When it was announced, it was a really big deal,” McLeod said. “Sears was an iconic retailer. It obviously brought a lot of attention to the village. Sears made a big difference.”

Among the other developments that have located around it are the Sears Centre Arena—now home to the NBA G League’s Windy City Bulls—and the Chicago region’s 185,000-square-foot Cabela’s store.

The westward expansion of the village’s commercial presence was followed by equivalent residential growth.

“There was very little housing on the west side of the village before Sears came,” McLeod said.

Though headlines today often chronicle the company’s present struggles, reminders of Sears’ heyday are all around. These include the call letters of Chicago radio station WLS—which stands for “World’s Largest Store” for the four years Sears owned the station in the 1920s—and

Opioid overdoses in Illinois killed nearly twice as many people as car crashes in 2016, but public health officials and addiction specialists say most people either don’t know or don’t care.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Nirav Shah said that families of addicts and law enforcement are starting to wake up to the crisis. But they say there are still too many people in Illinois who think drug addictions are only the users’ problem.

“Fully 80 percent of individuals who find themselves dealing with a heroin addiction got their start on a legitimate prescription from a doctor,” Shah said. “So we have to think about the stigma attached to this crisis. And we have to wonder if that’s part of the reason why, up until very recently, people wanted to sweep it

under the rug.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation’s data show that 1,078 people died in car wrecks in Illinois in 2016. Shah said IDPH’s numbers show that 1,946 died from opioid overdoses.

Natalie Thukkaram with the Soft Landings treatment center in Naperville said that people perceive the two causes of death differently.

“There is a stigma that surrounds addiction,” Thukkaram said. “Many people don’t understand addiction.

They see it as a moral choice, as a poor choice that someone is making.

So there is a stigma around substance abuse and substance dependence in general.”

In other words, people feel bad for accident victims. They don’t feel bad for drug users.

Shah said education is the key, and not just educating people about the

Living History: Pamela Welcome as Sojourner Truth Living-history actor Pamela Welcome portrays Sojourner Truth, the African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. Truth was born into slavery but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. Two years later she went to court to recover her son, becoming the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. In 2014, Truth was included in Smithsonian magazine’s list of the “100 Most Significant Americans of All Time.”

Proposed law would make it easier for out of state teachers to work in Illinois

The latest proposal to solve Illinois’ teacher shortage could have schools, once again, looking across the state line.

Illinois schools need teachers.

Every fall, school districts say they can’t find enough qualified, licensed teachers to fill their classrooms.

The Illinois State Board of Education said the 2017-2018 school year started with about 2,000 open teaching positions across the state.

Gov. Bruce Rauner, about a year ago, signed a reciprocity law that will cut some of the red tape to allow teachers in Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa, and Wisconsin an easier time finding work here.

State Rep. Tom Bennett, R-Gibson City, wants to add to that law.

His proposal would expand the list of acceptable previous work experience to get an Illinois license.

“If they’re teaching already in

another state, why do they need to walk through the hoops to get them so they can teach here?”

Bennett asked. “The hoops could be several classes, it could take two months or more. Why do we do this?”

Bennett’s idea is to add another state’s ‘qualified teacher prep program’ to the list of acceptable previous work experience to get an Illinois license.

“If they are already teaching, let’s get them on the books,” Bennett said. “Let’s get them registered and let’s get them into the classroom, which is where we need them at.”

Bennett’s districts bumps up against the Indiana border, and he says his local school leaders would love to be able to recruit teachers there.

Mendoza could then take the delinquent payments owed to the pension funds out of the city’s expected LGDF money.

Cities across the state have announced tax increases that will go to paying off growing pension costs.

The city of Danville now collects a “public safety pension fee” that costs residents up to $267 a year to pay down their public pension debt.

Commission member and State Sen. Jil Tracy, R-Quincy, said most of her city’s property taxes go to pay police and fire pension debt.

“It’s definitely a snowball rolling, as to edging out other vital services,” she said. “They have to struggle to find ways to meet that obligation but still provide core services to the public.”

Mendoza’s office did not immediately provide statistics on whether this law has yet to be utilized.

Illinois comptroller can now seize local funds for late pension payments

By Illinois News Network In the first year that Illinois’ comptroller can seize local government’s funds for delinquency of pension payments, a report shows the debt of Illinois’ police and fire pensions has exploded, potentially leaving local services threatened.

A report by the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability shows Illinois’ 653 police and fire pensions outside of Chicago are nearly $10 billion in debt.

This reflects a funding ratio of only 58 percent.

Municipalities can be penalized if they miss a payment. 2018 is the first fiscal year that Comptroller Susana Mendoza can legally withhold the full amount that the city falls behind from state payments to the city via the Local Government Distributive Fund.

If a municipality falls more than 90 days behind in its required contributions, under the 2016 law, the police or fire pension fund “may, after giving notice to the municipality,

Specifically, DMMC supports: • Cutting the Tax Collection Administrative Fee. Proposed legislation would restore half of the amount taken from municipalities in tax collection fees. As a result of the fee increase, government officials were forced to impose local funding cuts, often driving them to tap into critical reserves to cover losses.

• Opposing Small Cell Limitations. The Small Cell Facilities Deployment Act gives wireless providers unbridled access to public property in Illinois, including streetlights and traffic signals, and would severely limit municipalities in authorizing placement, setting fees and negotiating contracts.

• Approving Continued Appropriation. Municipalities are urging lawmakers to pass legislation that would enable municipalities to access designated funds in motor fuel tax revenue (used for local road and bridge maintenance and the purchase of road salt), casino and video gaming receipts (which are placed in a municipality’s general revenue fund), and 9-1-1 wireless surcharge funds (used to support emergency dispatch).

• Supporting Financially Sustainable Public Safety Pension System.

Without cutting benefits, consolidating the 663 municipal public safety pension funds into a single multiple-employer pension system would expand investment opportunities and lower operational expenses for those who serve our communities.

• Removing the Home-rule Distinction. This would allow for com-

police and fire and village staff, road repairs and maintenance, garbage collecting and snow plowing.

DMMC is also advocating for reforms aimed at local authority so municipalities can govern themselves and make decisions when it comes to franchising, zoning, permitting and licensing, local code enforcement and regulating business activities.

DMMC also seeks to reform public safety pensions and components of the state’s workers compensation law to preserve benefits and also lower costs for residents.

The DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC) outlined its annual legislative agenda recently, stressing the importance of maintaining local governance and protecting local revenue for essential community services.

DMMC President and Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra addressed the group’s 33 members, representing more than one million residents, at its annual Legislative Reception & Dinner in advance of the Illinois General Assembly’s spring session, starting later this month.

Veenstra noted that municipalities have endured significant funding cuts amid rising costs during the past several years. In its Fiscal Year 2018 budget, the state reduced traditional local revenue sources for cities and towns throughout Illinois. In DuPage County alone, those cuts amounted to a loss of $15.8 million.

That includes: an $11.4 million cut in the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF), or each local government’s share of the state income tax; a $1.4 million cut in personal property replacement tax (PPRT), or revenues to local governments by corporations; and a $2.9 million cut from a new 2 percent sales tax collection fee on local municipalities.

“This year marks a critical year for local governments, not only in DuPage, but across Illinois,” Veenstra said. “The uncertainty and the stress on the state’s budget has resulted in local governments having significantly less revenue to provide essential services to local residents and keep a lid on property taxes.”
