On Sunday, Jan. 20, the Independent learned that a man had been carjacked at gunpoint on Saturday afternoon in the 800 block of Hillcrest in Elmhurst. Police said the incident took place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19.

According to reports, the man had just pulled up to a friend’s house when he was approached by a black male, who displayed a silver handgun and demanded the car keys.

The offender was described as about 6’, 155 pounds, with a thin goatee. He was wearing a purple hoodie, blue jeans and black shoes, police said. He took the victim’s 2017 Cadillac Coupe and fled the scene.

Police said the car was found about 30 minutes later abandoned near I-290 and Lexington St. in Chicago.

Cable TV producer, author and community volunteer Genie Urick of Elmhurst will be honored as the 2018 inductee into the exclusive Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry Civic Hall of Fame.

Urick will become the Hall of Fame’s 27th member during the induction ceremony at the Chamber’s 100th Annual Awards Gala held in the main floor ballroom at The Drake Oak Brook Hotel in Oak Brook on Friday, Jan. 25, from 5 to 9 p.m.

“Genie is one of those rare individuals who are happy to work behind the scenes to accomplish great things so that others may stand in the limelight,” said John R. Quigley, ECCI President and CEO. Urick worked closely with the Elmhurst Chamber during her decades of service as the City of Elmhurst’s Cable Television Coordinator (starting in 1982) and producer of Elmhurst Our Kind of Town (EOKT), which began as a monthly local cable TV access program.

For nearly two decades, EOKT has aired coverage of annual ECCI’s Awards Gala and “State of Our City” Mayoral Address Membership Breakfast, and Elmhurst’s annual Memorial Day Parade, St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony on Comcast Channel 6 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Elmfest was among EOKT’s featured programs during the 1990s through the community festival’s end in 2008.

Urick has produced more than 1,400 cable TV programs, ranging from EOKT to “Newsline Elmhurst,” from “Elmhurst NOW” to “Time Travelers.”

“The level of professional coverage that Genie and her crew has provided over the years to our Chamber and many other organizations in Elmhurst is unmatched for local access,” stated Quigley, who serves as EOKT co-anchor for both the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation 5K Run and Elmhurst’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Urick is co-author of “The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the Twentieth Century,” with Ruth Strand, who died before the book published in 2001.

Long active in the Ray Graham Association, Urick received the Professional Leadership Award (1998) for “striving for a better tomorrow” and is a two-time Excellence in Volunteerism Award honoree (1996 and 1997).

She is among the Founding Parents who established the Reality is Respect, Appreciation and Fulfillment (RRAF) Day Program for young adults with autism and developmental challenges, and a RRAF Volunteer Support Award recipient.

a National Research and Projects Grant in 1987, Urick started a Sunday Recreation Program for autistic children at the Elmhurst Community Center.

She was named an Educational Foundation honoree in 1984, with the Elmhurst AAUW establishing a Grant Fellowship in her name.

While serving on the Bicentennial Project Committee, the Elmhurst AAUW produced an acclaimed booklet, “Elmhurst: Origin of Names, Streets, Parks and Landmarks,” with Urick contributing the illustrations.

Urick became the first female recipient of the Elmhurst College Bluejay Backers’ Community Service Award for her crucial role in expanding the cable TV coverage of EC’s intercollegiate athletic programs.

Arthur LaVelle, 96 Dr. Arthur LaVelle, of Elmhurst, died this past autumn at the age of 96, leaving his wife of 71 years, Faith, and daughter Audrey and granddaughter Jocelyn. He was born in North Dakota and spent his childhood in a farming community established by Scandinavian immigrants. At the age of seven, an infection left him profoundly deaf, a disability he contended with and overcame diligently for the rest of his life.

During World War II his family moved to Seattle, Washington, doing factory work that supported the war effort. Since Arthur’s deafness prevented any military service for him, he continued working while becoming the first member of his family to enter college. He graduated from the University of Washington, in Seattle, with a BS degree in Biology. Graduate work followed at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, with an MA in Biology and marriage to Faith, a fellow graduate student.

The next move was to Philadelphia, where he earned his PhD in Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was soon invited to join the Department of Anatomy in the College of Medicine, University of Illinois, in Chicago. He remained there for 35 years, teaching pre-professional students, doing grant supported laboratory research, and publishing research articles and reviews in the field of developmental neurocytology. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1987.

Because his wife was also a Professor of Anatomy, they shared interests in the field of neuroscience and in the training of the young people they taught. At home in Elmhurst they also enjoyed participating in the changing interests and activities of their daughter as she grew. In the summer they took time to travel across North America, always by car, usually camping, and visiting many national parks and monuments.

Arthur had quite a collection of tools and gadgets at home and found many ways to use them around the house and yard. For a change of pace, he competed in target archery, wrote poetry, read widely, played the banjo and harmonica, and listened to music. For all who knew him, he was a man who lived his life seriously, but with courtesy, good humor, and an ever-exploring mind.

A memorial gathering was held in Wilder Mansion in Elmhurst on January 3, 2019, with private interment at Mount Emblem Cemetery.

Peg was born in Flint, Mich., and graduated from Albion College. She pursued a career teaching mathematics. In 1946 she married Allan Mackey, and they resided in Elmhurst for the majority of their life together.

While at Albion, she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. In 2018 she was honored with the Order Of The Shield from Zeta Tau Alpha, recognizing her for being a participating member for 75 years.

She was very involved in Elmhurst Panhellenic, and held various board positions.

She was an active member in PEO, an organization committed to helping women pursue higher education, and participated in their mission in Elmhurst and St. Petersburg, Fla. She volunteered at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital as a member of the ‘Pink Elephant’ staff.

One of her passions was music.

She was a member of the choir at Elmhurst Presbyterian church for more than 40 years and the choir at Pasadena Community Church in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, and caring grandmother and will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Memorial Service was held at Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, at Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, 367 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst. Private interment.

Olga Jordan, 104 Longtime Elmhurst resident Olga Jordan passed away peacefully on January 12, 2019, in the arms of her daughter and granddaughter.

She was born Olga Catherine Visca on November 27, 1914, in White Plains, New York. Her father, Benedict Visca, came to America alone as a teenager in 1906. He became a successful businessman who loved his adopted country, living the American dream and in return contributing to his country’s prosperity.

Olga moved to Elmhurst in 1957

with her husband (Robert Jordan, 1913-1962). She was a piano teacher her entire adult life until she was 98. She also held an Illinois drivers license until 98. She had two daughters, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She had a keen interest in all kinds of music, often attending performances of the Chicago Symphony (her daughter is a former member) and Lyric Opera (her son-in-law is a former member). Two adult grandchildren are professional musicians. Mrs. Jordan was a choir member and organist in a number of area churches. She is fondly remembered by hundreds of former piano students.

Jacqueline A. Grigg, 92 Jacqueline A. Grigg passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday January 13, 2019 at the age of 92.

She was born Sept.

13, 1926, to Bill and Ruth Fiene of Elmhurst. Jackie graduated from York High School in 1944. She married Robert S. Grigg in June of 1950.

Jackie had a full life and is survived by her five children, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

Jan. 15 A victim in the 300 block of N. River Glen told police at around 4:23 p.m. that he and his son were having a verbal argument. The son then got into a car being driven by an unnamed suspect. As the suspect drove from the residence, he allegedly struck the victim with his car and also struck the victim’s parked vehicle, causing injury to the victim and damage to the parked vehicle. Officers located the suspect, who had fled the scene. The suspect told police that he accidentally struck the victim and the parked vehicle while he was fleeing the area.

The victim declined medical aid and refused to sign complaints against the suspect.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Jan. 13 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Lake told police at around 11:36 a.m. that she and the suspect were involved in a verbal argument. The suspect then allegedly grabbed the complainant’s wrist in an attempt to have her hang up the phone and speak with him. There were no visible signs of injury and the complainant agreed to leave the house for the day.

Due to no signs of injury, refusal to sign complaints, and conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Jan. 16 Typiess Altier, 42, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, damage to city property, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage in the 200 block of Elm at around 11:16 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a suspicious auto in the 1000 block of N. York at around 7:41 p.m., Christian Lucey, 20, of Elgin, was found to be urinating at the above location.

He was issued a citation for befouling public property. Yovani Escobedo, 22, and Kyle Cuchna, 25, both of Elgin, were in possession of open alcohol inside their vehicle, according to police. They were both issued citations for illegal transportation of open alcohol.

Jan. 14 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Madison and Bryan at around 12:43 a.m., the driver, a juvenile, was found to be in violation of curfew. Michael Mancini, 18, of Elmhurst; a second juvenile suspect and a third juvenile suspect were found to be under 21 years of age and to have consumed alcohol. Mancini was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor. The other two juveniles were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor and curfew violations. All suspects were released to their respective parent.

Jan. 13 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Sturges at around 1:38

a.m., the driver, a juvenile, was found to be in violation of curfew and did not have a valid driver’s license. Police said an officer observed open beer bottles in the vehicle. The juvenile was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage and a curfew violation. He was subsequently transported home and released to his parent. Daniel Mares, 29, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, consumed alcohol in front of the officer, according to police. He was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol.

Ricardo Vazquez, 21, of Aurora, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, speeding and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 2:15 a.m.

Jan. 12 Sonja M. Nelson, 69, of Clarendon Hills, was charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a traffic crash near Butterfield and York at around 12:42 a.m.

Matthew J. Olsen, 41, of Twin Lakes, Wis., was charged with DUI subsequent to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 800 block of Howard at around 12:50 a.m.

Harassment, threats

Jan. 16 A victim in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police at around 3:44 p.m. that she had been talking to the suspect via messenger hoping to start a dating relationship. Eventually the victim ended all contact with the suspect.

However, after a few months, the suspect began to reach out to the victim once again. The victim stated the suspect then continued to contact the victim via text using an unknown phone number. The victim does not wish to sign complaints, but wishes the suspect stop contacting her. The reporting officer spoke to the suspect and advised he end all contact with the victim.

Missing person

Jan. 10 A complainant told police that she had not heard from the victim since April of 2018.

The complainant stated the victim suffers from bi-polar disorder and had not been taking his medication. The victim was last arrested

by Chicago police in May, 2018. The victim drives a 2010 Toyota Corolla. The victim was entered into LEADS.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Jan. 16 Israel Aviles, 18, of Northlake, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Crown at around 11:20 a.m.

Casey Blicharz, 24, of Addison, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and an expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at around 9:06 a.m.

Police said a reporting officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near Crown and Diversey at around 8:19 p.m. due to having knowledge an occupant in the vehicle had a valid arrest warrant. Teresa Klein, 27, of Elmhurst, was found to have a warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Police said Klein also was in possession of heroin

CALL 800-222-TIPS and drug paraphernalia. She was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Jan. 14 Nadia Solis, 20, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and an expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Prospect at around 11:30 p.m.

Jan. 11 Jorge E. Ruiz, 26, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a disabled vehicle near Hagans and Spring at around 12:47 p.m.

Jan. 10 A York High School administrator advised a reporting officer at around noon that a juvenile suspect was in possession of several nicotine products in her backpack. According to police, the suspect admitted she planned to sell pods of nicotine product to fellow students. Police said the suspect also had one pod containing THC. The suspect was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of an alternative nicotine product, and was released at the scene. The suspect’s parent was notified of the incident.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Jan. 16 Identity theft was reported at a business in the 500 block of W. Wrightwood at around noon. A complainant told police that while reviewing the company’s checking account she noticed multiple fraudulent transactions on the account. The complainant contacted Chase Bank which reported all transactions were completed online using the company’s routing and account number.

Jan. 15 Police said that subsequent to a motorist assist near Roosevelt and Butterfield at around 8:40 p.m. where a subject was waving at passing motorists, the vehicle was located. The vehicle was found to be reportedly stolen out of Westmont. Officers then located the suspects nearby. According to police, Eduardo Lopez, 26, of Woodridge, who later admitted driving the stolen auto, resisted arrest. He was charged with unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of hypodermic syringes, obstructing/resisting a police officer, obstructing identification and driving while license suspended. Mikaela Snyder, 26, of Darien, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of hypodermic syringes and two counts of un-

lawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Theft was reported in the 500 block of Poplar at around 4:44 p.m. A victim told police that she returned home from work and noticed jewelry was missing from her bedroom. There is no evidence of forcible entry into the residence. A reporting officer questioned a suspect who denied any involvement in the theft.

Attempted theft was reported near Second and Addison at around 7:03 p.m. A victim told police that as she was driving a juvenile suspect to his father’s residence, the suspect became angry because she would not give him money for a video game. The victim stopped the car and the suspect reportedly grabbed the victim’s passport from the vehicle and fled the area. The suspect was located by officers. The suspect was released without charges to his father’s custody.

Jan. 14 Theft was reported at a business in the 100 block of N. York at around 5:37 p.m. A victim told police that a suspect described as a black male between 17-18 years old, wearing a gray Gap hoodie, gray sweatpants, gray winter hat, one black glove, red shoes and a blue backpack was observed behind the bar. The subject was holding a box of candy and asked if they would like to purchase any. The subject left the business and the victim then noticed the cash register open. An investigation is pending.

Jan. 13-Jan. 14 Commercial burglary was reported at a hair salon in the 1000 block of S. York sometime between the above dates. Police said a reporting officer observed the front glass door to the business to be shattered and possibly two pry marks near the middle of the door on each side. The owner and employees stated nothing was missing from the business.

Jan. 13 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at around 11:38 a.m.

A victim told police she parked her unlocked vehicle behind a business between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. The vehicle was entered by an unknown suspect(s) who removed an iPad from under the driver’s seat.

Nov. 22-Jan. 13 Theft was reported at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York. A complainant told police that the driver of a suspect vehicle pumped $36.24 worth of gasoline and left the scene without paying. A search of business records and surveillance video revealed a driver of the same vehicle had stolen $37.21 worth of gasoline on Nov. 22. There was a total loss of $73.45.

Jan. 12 Lashunna S. Burnett, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of a false ID, driving while license suspended and for failing to use headlights when required, subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 9:01 p.m. Police said Burnett was found to possess another person’s Illinois State ID. Identity theft was reported in the 900 block of S. Hawthorne at around 1:47 p.m. A victim told police that he received a bill from Verizon for two phones including two phone lines. The victim related he had never opened an account with Verizon Wireless and that he is a customer of Sprint for his personal cellular service.

Theft was reported in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 8:13 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect stole her wallet while she was shopping at Party City. The victim was not aware of the theft until later in the evening. The wallet contained the victim’s driver’s license, cash and several credit

cards. The victim canceled all of her credit cards. Several days later the victim noticed a fraudulent purchase charged to her Chase Bank credit card at Whole Foods in Elmhurst.

Jan. 11 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of W. North at around 1:15 p.m. A victim told police that she made a purchase, returned her credit card to her wallet and hung her purse on a chair at her table.

She was later notified that two of her credit cards were each used for an unauthorized transaction. She checked her wallet and found two credit cards were missing.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 4:55 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect concealed a bottle of alcohol in the left side of his hip pocket area and left the store without paying for the item.

The suspect entered a grey, Toyota Yaris and fled eastbound Butterfield Road. The total loss is $26.15. The suspect was described as a black male between 25 and 30 years old, with a full beard, a dark complexion, 6’2”, between 150 and 180 pounds, wearing a gray hoodie-style sweatshirt, a black baseball style hat with unknown markings, blue jeans and unknown colored gym shoes.

Jan. 10 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of S. York at around 8:29 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect attempted to open unauthorized credit accounts at six different banking institutions using the victim’s personal information.

The victim contacted all the banks

to report the fraudulent activity.

Theft was reported in the 100 block of W. Virginia at around 12:05 a.m. A victim told police that her ATM card was stolen from her purse and an unauthorized withdrawal had occurred. She believes the suspect stole the ATM card out of her purse during a visit to her home.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of S. York at around 11:22 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect made an unauthorized charge on her debit card.

The purchase was made on-line using the debit card number with the merchandise being shipped to a name and address in Oregon. The victim has her debit card in her possession. The victim contacted the bank and the merchant to report the fraudulent activity.

Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of N. Oaklawn at around 4:57 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used his personal information and opened an unauthorized credit card account.

Jan. 9-Jan. 10 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of Industrial Drive. Police said an unknown suspect pried open a locked cargo bin of a company owned vehicle and removed several pieces of equipment sometime between the above dates. A security camera recorded three suspects in the lot at around 11:36 p.m. Jan. 9. One of the suspects was described as a man of an unknown race, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and white gym shoes. There is no description of the other two suspects.

Theft and criminal damage to

property was reported in the 700 block of Industrial Drive sometime between the above dates. A victim told police that they discovered an unknown suspect had cut the locks off of three storage containers and removed a Stihl chainsaw. The victim will review security video when it becomes available.

Lombard citizens save 96-year-old woman from being struck by train

Herrera, along with Spapperi and Mueller, assisted Lazarra out of her vehicle and off of the tracks. Shortly after that time, Metra Train #134, traveling westbound on the tracks, collided with Lazarra’s vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was treated at the scene by Lombard paramedic/firefighters. She appeared disoriented and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for tests and observation.

“It’s nice to know that we still have people that act when others are in need,” said Lombard Police Chief Roy Newton. “I truly believe that they helped save a life this day.

“These are both Lombard residents and I’m very proud of our town. Lombard is a community that cares about its neighbors and that’s evident with this situation.”

In my opinion

Joy in our 70s and 60s and 80s and 50s and 90s and 40s….

An article that appeared in the New York Times on Jan. 12, written by Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist and author, was sent to me by a friend who said, “This sounds just like you!” (Thanks, Don!).

Mary states that happiness is a skill and a choice. Amen. I’ve been preaching that to clients and myself for the last decade or more. She also writes, “Our happiness comes from self-knowledge, emotional intelligence, and empathy for others.”

What is fascinating is that her vantage point and the title of the article is “The Joy of Being a Woman in Her 70s.” We absolutely do not have to wait until we are in our 70s to expand our capacity for happiness.

Start now.

The key to all things in life is awareness. What are you paying attention to?

If you look for idiots, you will find them. If you look for kind people, you will find them. If you seek beauty, love, trust, fun, compassion, you will roll around in it. If you choose to look for the worst, that is what you will see.

It’s always our choice.

Mary proclaims, “We have

learned to look every day for humor, love and beauty. Happiness is built by attitude and intention.”

At any age, it is never too late to be intentional!

I just had a visit with my friend Bernice who will be 95 in April.

Every other word out of her mouth is “I have been so blessed. I have had such a good life.” She is sprite and chipper and healthy because of her attitude and intention.

This article quotes jazz great, Jane Jarvis, “I have everything I need to be happy right between my ears.”

Yes. My sweet Prince Charming shares that same sentiment regularly and he is a mere lad in his 50s.

Mary rattles off a list of things that women in their 70s can do now with the gift of aging and several decades of life experience, “We can be kinder to ourselves as well as

more honest and authentic….We can listen to our hearts.”

I agree with every fiber of my being AND I am equally adamant that it starts this second, ladies and fellas. However old you are, it is time to be you, fully you, unabashedly you, unapologetically you. It is time to be kind to you. It always is time to listen to the heart.

My workshops now all focus on listening to your heart, be it a life visioning workshop or write your book workshop. The answers are within. Our guidance system for life comes equipped at birth. We simply are not taught how to operate it.

If you want to feel more at peace inside, start paying attention to what you pay attention to. Make a point to look for kindness or beauty every day for the next week. (For the rest of your life.)

Simple gestures of kindness, little bits of beauty, everything is in the eye of the beholder. What do you behold? What do you want more of?

Focus on that.

This seemingly simple exercise in attention has a profound impact.

Perhaps you just ask yourself while you are brushing your teeth in the morning, “What will I look for today?”

See what happens. Do you want to be happier as you age? This is where it begins.

Bettering bacon: Make the grease into a candle

There’s a saying: “Everything’s better with bacon.” And it’s true.

Bacon is greasy and crunchy. It’s chewy and salty. It’s delectable and balanced. Bacon is akin to nature’s perfect food.

I’d never contemplated the idea of improving bacon. I don’t think many people have. Bacon is great flying solo or combined with any number of foods – both savory and sweet, from the traditional breakfast fodder to sprinkled on a luncheon salad or draped around a dinner steak. You can even dip it in chocolate for a flavor combination that’s just about beyond this world.

When God created bacon it was a good day.

So making bacon better? It should be impossible, or nearly so. At least that’s what I thought.

Then, last weekend, I made bacon.

And I was left with the dilemma most baconistas encounter: What to do with the inevitable grease?

Since the beginning of time, I’ve been using heat proof containers – empty soup cans, milk cartons and pickle jars – to dispose of the grease before placing it in the garbage. You aren’t supposed to wash that bad boy down the sink, unless you want to clog your sink. (Reference my plumbing column from November

2018 for my views on that unneeded adventure.)

Anyhow, last Sunday Funday it was just the two of us - me and the grease.

I looked around the kitchen for an empty can or otherwise suitable vessel for discarding purposes. Seeing none, I hit upon my Eureka moment.

Quick sidebar here: I’ve recently taken to making candles. As I scanned my kitchen for a suitable place to get rid of the bacon grease, I spotted an empty candle jar waiting for its wax. I knew exactly what I was going to do and where I’d pour my bacon grease.

You’re right in guessing the candle jar. Yep. I made myself a little, albeit delectable, bacon grease candle. It hardened up nicely – not as hard as a regular candle, but hey, on previous occasions the bacon grease would have been garbage. I call that nothing

short of magic.

I let the candle cure for a few days before lighting the wick. It burned nicely. It didn’t smell like bacon, but I never claimed this is a perfect world.

I suppose this exposes my inner weirdness. Who makes a candle out of bacon grease? Someone not wanting to clog her sink or add unneeded garbage into her can. Someone who makes something out of nothing.

Someone who sees the candle jar as half full. Someone who thinks outside the box in ways that take bacon from a great addition to breakfast to a multi-tasking two-fer.

Bacon – it’s not just for breakfast (or lunch or dinner or dessert) anymore! It’s an accessory to your tablescape! It’s a candle for goodness sake! That is a wow in my world.

(Again, inner weirdness but when

you’re going for broke you might as well go all the way.)

I could go on and on, but I probably already have.

I’ve since made more bacon candles. What can I say? My family likes bacon. It’s a Sunday treat. Not to mention an ingredient for candles. I’ll take a two-fer product anyway of the week. But I’m not done. My bacon has been elevated beyond even that.

It’s the topic of this column. That, my friends, brings it to the trifecta level of a three-fer.

Tom Cullerton selected to lead Senate’s Labor Committee As a former Teamster member, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is no stranger to the importance of organized labor in Illinois.

This week Cullerton was tabbed to chair the Illinois State Senate Labor State Senator Committee.

County Coroner releases 2018 opioid statistics DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, M.D. has completed evaluation of the Opioid related deaths for 2018.

“The Opioid epidemic continues to escalate and destroy the lives of too many DuPage County residents,” Dr. Jorgensen said. “The influx of potent synthetic opiates including fentanyl has increased significantly,

and now represents a higher percentage of illicit drug usage and cause of death than heroin alone.

“I and my office remain committed to continue our efforts to fight against this plague through education, support of drug treatment and the DuPage County Narcan® Program.”

DuPage County consolidates Election Commission into County Clerk’s Office The DuPage County Board voted on Jan. 15 to officially dissolve the DuPage Election Commission into the County Clerk’s Office, completing a multi-year process to consolidate the sixth unit of government under the County’s ACT Initiative.

The action comes as a result of the

enactment of Public Act 100-0628, which was passed by the General Assembly in May 2018 and signed

by Gov. Bruce Rauner in July 2018.

“Today marks the conclusion of our efforts to bring greater oversight to the Election Commission and the election process by fold-

ing its operations into the County Clerk’s Office,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “The Election Commission staff performed admirably during the latest election, and we have faith the transition to the Clerk will be a smooth process.”

DuPage County began soliciting public input on the proposed consolidation of the DuPage Election Commission in 2017. In March 2018, a majority of DuPage County voters said they were in favor of consolidating the Election Commission into the Clerk’s Office.

Youth Commission seeks nominees for volunteer service awards

On Saturday, March 9, the 23rd annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will step off at 12 noon from Wilson St. & Spring Rd. heading north, ending at the railroad tracks just beyond Silverado Grill.

This year’s Grand Marshal will be Immaculate Conception Catholic Prep and its outstanding football team.

The parade features floats, marching units and animated characters along with local organizations, businesses and clubs along a mile stretch.

Police search for ‘Till Tap’ thief Elmhurst police are searching for a man wanted in connection with a “Till Tap” Theft that occurred at Marco’s Table 130 N. York in Elmhurst.

According to Police Chief Michael Ruth, on Monday, Jan. 14 at 3:24 p.m., a man entered the restaurant

Officer-involved shooting takes place during domestic incident

On Jan. 17, the Addison Police Department reported that at about 4:25 a.m. that morning, officers responded to the 200 block of Mill Road to investigate a domestic disturbance. When entering the apartment at the scene, officers encountered a person armed with a knife.

Officers gave commands to gain the person’s compliance in dropping the knife. This person advanced on officers while brandishing the knife.

One officer fired their duty weapon and struck the person. Other officers and medical personnel responded to the residence and provided medical attention.

Police officials called it “an isolated incident, which has ended, and there are no concerns for the ongoing safety of the public.”

An investigation will be conducted by the DuPage Major Crimes Task Force, which is standard practice for an officer involved shooting. The Addison Police Department requests the community’s patience while the investigation proceeds. It will release information when it becomes available via Facebook.

Due to unforeseen storm damage, Krave Restaurant, located at the northwest corner of St. Charles Rd. and Rte. 83, has announced through a sign on the door and on its Facebook page that it is closed “for the time being.”

“We are very grateful to everyone

whom supported us in the past years and to shine some light on such a unplanned and unfortunate situation, we do have some good news,” according to the Facebook page. “Our new location will be in Bridgeview right in front of Toyota Park.”

Born Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, King was ordained and became assistant pastor at his father’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1948. He married Coretta Scott King in 1953, with whom he had four children.

It was in 1955 that his civil rights efforts began in earnest, when he became president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, the group that led the 13-month Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus. It ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling segregation on public buses unconstitutional.

King gave his tide-turning “I Have A Dream” speech at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and in 1964 came the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Selma to Montgomery marches, following the infamous “Bloody Sunday” at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, followed in 1965.

And King would spend most of the following year in Chicago, marking the expansion of the civil rights battle from the South to northern cities, with key activists Jackson, James Bevel and Al Raby.

King’s mark—while combating racial segregation and discrimination in Chicago—extended to suburban and Downstate Illinois, such as his Feb. 10, 1966, speech before thousands at the Fred Young Fieldhouse of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

Some still debate the success of King’s Chicago campaign— Illinois’ largest city remains one of the nation’s most segregated. But

the Chicago Freedom Movement inarguably led to the Fair Housing Act of 1968, signed into law a week after King’s assassination.

Jackson, however, says the larger quest at the heart of the revered leader’s work in Chicago also is inarguably achieved—empowerment and representation, evident in the diverse political landscape of Illinois, of Chicago and nationwide.

“King’s legacy is the Voting Rights Act, which has stood the test of time and resistance,” says Jackson.

“Today,” Jackson continued, “Chicago is the urban center with the most U.S. senators of color, Carol Moseley Braun, Roland Burris and Barack Obama; and the home of two African-American men who ran for president, myself and President Obama. In Illinois, we now have an African-American lieutenant governor. So King’s legacy stands tall.

“And on this past Nov. 6, his legacy manifested itself in the largest number of women and minorities ever elected in a freshman class of Congress, along with statewide candidates. If you look at Stacey Abrams’ candidacy for governor in Georgia, Andrew Gillum’s candidacy for governor in Florida, and U.S. Senate races in Texas and Mississippi, a new South is rising,” adds Jackson.

“The gap that was once a horizontal gap between black and white is now a vertical gap of disparity between the haves and the have-nots. That, more than anything, is the unfinished business of Dr. King’s work.”

YMCA, Blackhawks host ‘Girls Hockey Day’ In partnership with the Chicago Blackhawks, the Elmhurst YMCA hosted its 3rd Annual “Girls Hockey Day” on Monday, Jan. 14 A group of 32 girls ages 5-12 attended the hour-long clinic held at the Elmhurst YMCA’s outdoor ice rink.

The skaters were grouped by skill level and focused on skating techniques, passing and stick handling.

On Tuesday, Jan. 15, DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry announced the opening of the application period for the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program.

The Program allows qualifying seniors, aged 65 years and older, to defer up to $5,000 of their property taxes until the time they sell their home.

“To qualify, the applicant’s household income cannot exceed $55,000,” said DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry. “Additionally, the property must be used exclusively for residential purposes. The deferral is treated as a loan and accrues at 6 percent simple interest until paid.”

Unfortunately, many seniors are unaware of this worthwhile program.

“To increase awareness, our office is once again working with local churches and other organizations to help inform seniors about the existence of the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program,” Henry added.

Henry said that application forms were automatically mailed to last year’s participants.

Bethel presents Story Club On Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., Story Club returns to Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst. Story Club is a storytelling event with true stories told live, featuring a mix of experienced storytellers with an open mic opportunity for anyone Here’s how Story Club works: you can attend as an audience member and have the experience of hearing real stories told live.

And, you can join in the storytelling by preparing an eight-minute story to share. Our storytelling theme for the

evening is “Closets.” We hope you can join us!

Story Club is geared for 14+ years old. There will be a free will donation of $10 to support Youth Outlook, one of Bethel’s Human Concerns mission partners, the first social service agency in Illinois solely dedicated to the support of LGBTQ+ youth.

This organization works in six counties in the Chicago suburbs, offering drop-in centers for youth, parent support, and community education. Youth Outlook provides dedicated program-

ming related to safer sex, healthy relationships, and HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Bethel is developing plans to host a Youth Outlook Drop-in Center beginning in the fall of 2019.

Bethel UCC is located at 315 E. St. Charles Rd. in Elmhurst. Church facilities are fully accessible and parking is available behind the church; please enter from St. Charles Rd. or Huntington Lane off Poplar.

Man found guilty of First Degree murder of Wheaton woman DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Thursday, Jan. 17 that a jury has found Myron D. Ester, 50, guilty of the 2013 murder of Wheaton resident 39-year-old Linda Valez. The jury returned their verdict this afternoon after deliberating for approximately two hours following a seven-day-long trial. In addition, the jury also found that the murder was committed in an exceptionally brutal or heinous manner.

On Sept. 25, 2013, Glen Ellyn police officers responded to a missing person in the Glen Ellyn area. Through the course of the investigation, officers went to Panfish Park where Valez was known to frequent. Three days later, while at Panfish Park, officers discovered a disturbed area of vegetation and drops of blood nearby.

Further examination of the area revealed a shallow grave in which officers discovered Valez. She had been stabbed 39 times. An investigation led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department and the Major Crimes Task Force revealed that at some time in the evening of Sept. 24, 2013, Valez and Ester had gone to Panfish Park together.

While at the park, a verbal altercation between the two turned violent resulting in Ester stabbing Valez numerous times about the head, neck and torso. On Sunday, Sept.

29, 2013, Ester was taken into custody without incident. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail without bond since that time.

“On September 24, 2013, Mr. Ester brought Linda to Panfish Park knowing full well he would be walking out alone,” Berlin said. “Once at the park, Mr. Ester stabbed Linda thirty-nine times and dumped her body in a shallow grave he prepared. This was a pre-meditated senseless act of domestic violence that … will not go unpunished. I would like to thank the jury for seeing through Mr. Ester’s ridiculous claim of self-defense as well as Judge Telander for ensuring a fair trial for both sides.”

Ester’s next court appearance is scheduled for February 20, 2019, for return of the presentence report. Because the jury found the crime to be committed in an exceptionally brutal or heinous manner, Ester faces a possible sentence of up to natural life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team battles Aurora Christian Gaudio, Lee and Jordan in double figures

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team went toe-to-toe with Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division entrant Aurora Christian recently.

The Knights lost 54-46, but led by six with 2:31 left in the game. “We almost had them,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “We couldn’t close out. Our kids played hard.”

IC Catholic Prep trailed 9-5 after the first quarter and 22-15 at halftime. The Knights outscored Aurora Christian 20-8 in the third quarter, but Aurora Christian outscored the Knights 24-11 in the fourth quarter.

Dom Gaudio led the Knights with 12 points and hit two 3-pointers. Chauncey Lee had 11 points, while Zach Jordan had 10 points (two 3-pointers) and Mike Carpanzano had eight points

(one 3-pointer).

The Knights also dropped a 4626 MSC crossover game to Chicago Christian. The Knights trailed 11-5 after the first quarter and 19-12 at halftime. Carpanzano and Ryan Wojtalewicz each had seven points. Lee had six points.

In IC Catholic Prep’s recent game against St. Edward, Gaudio had 17 points and hit 8 of 8 free-throw attempts. He also had four rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks. Lee had 14 points (two 3-pointers). Wojtalewicz had nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Carpanzano had eight points and hit two 3-pointers.

The Knights shot 53 percent from the field and 93 percent from the foul line (14-for-15).

In a loss to Bishop McNamara in conference play, the Knights shot 31 percent from the field. Lee and Jordan each had 10 points, while Wojtalewicz had eight points.

The York girls basketball team continued its recent momentum in a big way with a non-conference 66-54 win over highly touted Lake Park.

“We played really well,” said York coach Brandon Collings.

Sydney Molis led the Dukes with 19 points. Sara Krissinger had 18 points, while Bridget Los had 11 points. Kaitlyn Kjome contributed seven points and seven rebounds.

“It was a big win for us, especially after a couple tough losses,” said Collings. “Their best player is going to DePaul and we tried to contain her and she still had 30 against us.”

York also recently scored a West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against Hinsdale Central. The Dukes’ conference game with Proviso West was postponed due to the bad weather last weekend.

The Dukes are scheduled to play Oak Park-River Forest, Proviso West and Lyons Township (Friday) this week. The Dukes head into this week’s three conference games with a 5-3 WSC Silver mark.

“It’s a big stretch of games for us,” said Collings.

Collings said confidence has been

“I think we have our confidence back in general,” he said. “We are playing with better energy, we are shooting the basketball better and that makes life easier. We’ve been hitting shots. We scored 75 against Hinsdale Central and had 66 points against Lake Park.

“We are starting to finish better around the basket,” said Collings.

“We’re getting 3s and we are defending with better energy. Our sophomores on the varsity also have had a nice stretch.

Sydney Molis had 12 against Glenbard West, 18 against Hinsdale Central and 19 against Lake Park. We’re also getting a lot of production from Kaitlyn Kjome—those are our two sophomore starters. Sara Krissinger is getting better and better and Bridget Los has done a nice job for us. Sydney Fuglsang also has done a nice job taking care of the ball for us. Carley Schwartz is shooting the ball well and Kathleen Levins is doing what she does, grabbing rebounds and playing well.”

Collings said injured players Maddy Stark and Kiah Rufus continue to progress. Collings said Stark was cleared to start practicing last week and practiced with contact and Rufus is starting physical therapy for her injury.

“That would help us out if we had those two healthy and back playing a little bit,” said Collings.

It’s been an eventful few weeks, to say the least, for the York girls bowling team.

The Dukes recently won the Hinsdale Central Red Devil invitational by shooting a 5,750 team score (with 5 bowlers) and setting a new school record for total pinfall in the process.

Junior Lauren Rickenbrode won the Red Devil individual title, while Krystyna Panek took fourth and Holly Santucci was sixth overall.

Rickenbrode had a 1,269 series with games of 191, 226, 192, 246, 200 and 214. Panek had a 1,223 series with high games of 204, 219, 195, 235 and 232. Santucci had high games of 199, 175, 247, 191 and 232 for a 1,207 series. Ruby Noel had a 225 high game and Caroline Collins had a 188 high game.

“It was great because all our varsity bowlers competed over the course of those two days and contributed to the performances,” said York coach Katie Turnbull.

York also recently downed Morton in a West Suburban Conference match where Panek shot a 299, setting a new individual record for a single game. The previous York high game was a 289. Panek’s 299 ranks second all-time in WSC his-

The Dukes also took second at the recent Ed Puck invitational and lost a WSC contest to first-place Willowbrook.

“Over winter break we used that time to work on making some changes and improving parts of our mechanics while we had a break,” said Turnbull. “Sometimes we have to break things down before we can build them back up and that can lead to occasional setbacks.

We bowled a couple of invites over winter break at Harlem and Oswego East that we used as opportunities to work on some fundamentals instead of focusing on scoring. We returned with our conference matches against Willowbrook and lost that match, but over the weekend I think we turned a corner and started to take off.”

York’s JV won the Buffalo Grove invitational where junior Maggie Clink took second overall, freshman Kara Jensen was fifth and sophomore Abbie Romanowski was seventh. Freshman Gaby Costible was 12th.

York’s varsity was 6-2 through late last week, while the JV team still has not lost. “We have a lot of young talent that is really starting to shine,” said Turnbull.

Noel has the fourth-highest series in the conference this year at 643, while Panek is seventh at 634 and Klinger 10th at 615. Panek has the conference high game of 299, while Noel is eighth with a 241.

On the JV level, York was 7-0 in WSC contests, ahead of 6-1 Downers Grove South and 4-3 Addison Trail.

York’s JV has the high conference game of the year at 1,003 and high series at 2,675.

In the Morton win, York shot 3,364 to Morton’s 2,915. Panek had a 634 series with high games of 299 and 199. Klinger had a 615 high series with high games of 223, 213 and 179. Rickenbrode had a 584 series with high games of 203, 198 and 185. Santucci had a 554 series with high games of 189, 185 and 180. Noel rolled a 200 game.

The JV beat Morton 2,466-2,317.

Emily Catalano had a 467 series with a 193 high game. Svehla had a 445 series with a 176 high game.

York’s JV won the Buffalo Grove invitational Blue Division title with a 4,732 pinfall. Clink was second

with a 1,025 series with games of 182, 181 and 182 before the lunch break and a 193 in the afternoon.

Jensen was fourth with a 992 series with high games of 192 and 181. Romanowski was sixth with a 972, which included a 218 high game. Costible was 11th with a 902 and had high games of 167 and 163.

York competed in the Harlem Lady Huskie invitational where it had a 5,167 team score. Panek was 11th with a 1,211 and averaged 201 pins a game for six games. She also had the fifth-highest game of the day with a 257, which earned her a star bowler for the game award from Harlem for going 67 pins over average.

Santucci was 46th with a 1,006 with a high game of 188. Klinger was 50th with a 1,002 series and high game of 202. Collins was 55th with a 979 series and a high game of 185 and Rickenbrode was 59th with a 969 series with a 178 high game.

In the 3,395-3,065 loss to Willowbrook, the Dukes shot a 1,072 in the second game. Santucci finished with a 578 series with high games of 225 and 192. Klinger had a 577 series with high games of 223 and 199. Rickenbrode had a 509 series with high games of 199 and 172.

The JV defeated Willowbrook 2,527-2,269. Jensen had a 471 series with a 182 high game. Romanowski had a 453 series with a 167 high game and Clink had a 446 series with a 193 high game.

York boys basketball team moves to 17-2 with pair of wins Dukes open WheatonWarrenville South MLK event with two key victories

The York boys cagers opened up play in the Wheaton-Warrenville South Martin Luther King shootout with wins against Schaumburg Christian and Plainfield East.

“We defended well,” said York coach Vince Doran. “Nate Shockey didn’t play for us and I thought Jeff Grace did really well. He stepped in and started and we had other kids who had some good moments. It was a good day.”

In the Plainfield East win, Nick Kosich went 4-for-4 at the foul line late, while Sam Walsh also hit two free throws down the stretch.

“We had a lot of different guys step up,” said Doran. “With Nate

out, other guys did a good job. We made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch against Plainfield East. We saw some very good competition.

This is probably the best MLK tournament in the state.”

The two wins put York at 17-2 overall. The Dukes were tied with Oak Park-River Forest through late last week for the lead in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division at 5-1.

Earlier, the Dukes were 57-50 WSC Silver winners against Glenbard West. York trailed 16-15 after the first quarter and 25-24 at halftime. York took care of the small deficit with a 16-7 run in the third quarter.

Kosich led the Dukes with 16 points and sank 5 of 6 free throws.

Shockey had 15 points, while Erik Cohn had 14 points and Sam Walsh had nine points. Kosich made three 3-pointers, while Shockey made two and John Milling made one.

York shot 6-for-19 from the 3-point line (31.6 percent) and 43.9 percent from the field for the game.

Shockey added six rebounds, while Kosich and Walsh each had five rebounds. Walsh had three assists and Cohn had four steals.

York also lost 59-30 to Oak Park-River Forest in conference play. York trailed 10-6 after the first quarter and 31-11 at halftime after the Huskies went on a 21-5 second-quarter run.

Oak Park-River Forest outscored York 17-13 in the third and 11-6 in the fourth quarter.

Cohn led the Dukes with nine points. Kosich had seven points and Shockey had six points. York shot 28.9 percent from the field.

Kosich and Mike Pedote each hit a 3-pointer. Walsh had four rebounds, while Milling had four steals. Kosich, Shockey, Walsh and

Grace each had two steals. York did force 19 turnovers but made 20 of its own.

The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Dukes.

Through 17 games, Cohn was leading the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Walsh was at 12.7, while Kosich was at 11.9 and Shockey at 11.2, giving York key balanced scoring.

Walsh was tops on the team in rebounding at 4.5 per game. Kosich was the team leader in assists with 49 against only 31 turnovers.

Shockey had 38 assists. Shockey also was leading the team in steals with 40. York has five players with 30 or more steals.

Cohn was leading in 3-point shooting with 34 made (38.2 percent), while Kosich had 28 made (38.9 percent) and Shockey had 23 made (36.5 percent). York had made 107 three-pointers through 17 games. York was also forcing an average of 20.9 turnovers per game, while shooting .486 as a team compared to its opponents’ .456 average from the floor.

York was averaging 57.6 points per game through 17 games, while holding opponents to 47.9 points per contest.

Kosich was leading the team in tips and deflections with 50. Cohn had 48, while Shockey had 46.

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team finds itself in the thick of a conference race.

With a recent win over Fenton, the Trojans moved to 8-2 overall in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action. Timothy trails Aurora Christian by one game in the loss column with Chicago Christian having two losses as well.

“It’s been a crazy conference,” said Timothy coach Mark Baumbach. “We beat Aurora Christian in conference and Chicago Christian had our number twice. It’s been wild.

But the good thing is you want to be playing for something right now leading into the playoffs.”

During a recent three-game stretch, the Trojans were 38-32 winners over Lisle in non-conference play.

“We came out to a great start,” said Baumbach. “We led 15-2 and Lisle made a nice comeback. It was a gritty effort by us against a team that played hard man-to-man defense.

Hannah (Schuringa) made some nice free throws down the stretch and Lauren Gehrke had a big basket down the stretch. It’s one of the few games where we played a team that played hard man-to-man defense, bodied us and was physical. We were able to overcome that and it was nice to see.”

The Trojans also defeated Westmont 70-30 in non-conference play.

“The game pretty much was decided in the first half. It was 49-12 at one point. We were on fire the whole game. We came out hot. Everybody had good playing time.”

Schuringa led the way with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Sureya Alex had

15 points (2 threes) and four assists, Jordyn Strube had 13 points and Sarah Carstensen had 10 points. Timothy shot 27-for-54 from the field (50 percent) and 78 percent from the free-throw line (11 of 14). Celeste VanderMeer added six rebounds.

“We were very well-balanced,” said Baumbach. “We played great defense as well. That game helped get us prepared for Fenton.”

Timothy defeated Fenton 82-62 in MSC Red play and overcame the Bison attempting 71 three-pointers.

“That was 16 more than the first time we played them,” Baumbach pointed out. “It was a crazy game. Our transition game was outstanding. Defensively, you hope shots aren’t going in against them. You can defend and get a hand up on someone but it seems they always are getting a shot off and then you have rebounds going all over the place. We did a nice job with our guards and forwards getting rebounds and Greta (Hoogstra) and Hannah (Schuringa) rebounding as well. It was a nice effort. Fenton is such a different team. We decided to play the same strategy and that’s to outscore them. You have to get the rebound and be ready to run and push the floor. Sureya singlehandedly beat their press. We did a great job finishing. It was senior night for us and we were pumped up.”

Timothy was 16-5 overall after the Fenton win.

In the Lisle victory, Schuringa had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Strube had six points and two steals. Alex had six points and Hoogstra had six points and 14 rebounds.

Against Fenton, Schuringa had 24 points and 15 rebounds (11 offensive). Alex had 19 points (2 threes).

Strube had 17 points and Hoogstra had eight points. Carstensen had eight rebounds and four assists. Timothy shot 46 percent from the field and attempted 80 shots in the game.

The Trojans face Aurora Christian on Jan. 31.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Thursday, Jan. 17 that an Elgin woman will serve 28 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for setting fire to a Roselle townhouse and attacking one of the occupants of the residence in 2017.

Chavez Odio, 30, appeared in court this afternoon where she entered a plea of guilty to one count of Attempt Murder and one count of Aggravated Arson. Both charges are a Class X Felony. Odio entered her plea in front of Judge George Bakalis who will formally sentence Odio on Feb. 14, 2019.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on July 25, 2017, firefighters with the Roselle Fire Department responded to a call of a fire on Circle Avenue in Roselle. An investigation into the matter led by the Roselle Police

Department and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force found that at approximately 2 a.m. Odio entered the townhouse and was confronted by a female occupant of the home.

Following a brief verbal altercation, Odio stabbed the woman several times with a sharp knife-like object and attempted to suffocate her with a plastic bag. The woman was able to free herself from the attack and retreated to an upstairs room. Odio then started a fire on the first floor of the townhouse before fleeing in a vehicle that was parked in the driveway that did not belong to her. The woman and another occupant of the townhome were forced to jump from the second floor of the townhouse to escape the fire. An investigation led to Odio who was taken into custody the following af-

ternoon without incident.

On July 27, 2017, Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $2 million with 10% to apply. She has remained in custody since that time.

“In the middle of the night, Chavez Odio broke into a Roselle townhome, stabbed and attempted to suffocate one of the occupants and then set fire to the home forcing two occupants to jump from a second story window to escape,” Berlin said. “This afternoon, Ms. Odio learned that for this outrageous behavior she will spend the next 28 years of her life behind bars. Thankfully, neither of the victims were seriously injured. … Ms. Odio was identified as a suspect and taken into custody later that same day.”

Odio must serve 85% of her sentence before being eligible for parole.

Kiwanis Club alleviates some fears for families affected by government shutdown When paychecks for federal employees don’t come Friday, their kids will still get a nutritious meal at school. The Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst will cover lunch expenses for the kids of any family feeling the pinch of the government shutdown.

The club is prepared to donate whatever is needed to make sure every student gets lunch.

“We started this about 10 years ago, during the recession, when we learned kids who didn’t have lunch money were going without lunch,” said Rich Rosenberg of the program the club calls Food for Thought.

A long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst, Rosenberg says, “The circumstances with the government have changed the game.

Funds might not be available for lunch money.”

“The Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst saw a community need and responded, which is just what Kiwanis clubs do,” said Stan Soderstrom, executive director of Kiwanis International.

“Kids need Kiwanis to look out for them and help meet their needs.”

The Kiwanis club’s annual pancake breakfast raises $9,000 to $12,000 annually to cover the lunch project and other projects that help kids. The project costs $1,500 to $2,000 yearly.

Rosenberg said the school’s social workers help identify children who could benefit from the free lunch.

“This in no way replaces federal support or food stamps,” he said.

“We just serve kids whose mom or dad may be short for a one reason or another. The kid walks through the lunch line like every other child.”
