Long-time Elmhurst businessman, civic leader and community volunteer Darrell L. Whistler will be honored as the 2016 inductee into the exclusive Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry Civic Hall of Fame.

Whistler will become the Hall of Fame’s 25th member during the induction ceremony at the Chamber’s 98th Annual Awards Gala held at The Drake Oak Brook Hotel in Oak Brook on Friday, January 27, from 5 to 9 p.m.

A former Sears Roebuck & Co. executive, Whistler serves as a Vice President and Director at Community Bank of Elmhurst and is the longtime Chair of the City of Elmhurst’s Zoning and Planning (Z&P) Commission.

“Darrell Whistler offers a life-time illustration for all of us to see of the good that people can accomplish through their volunteerism,” said John R. Quigley, ECCI President and CEO. A long-time supporter of the former Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, Whistler served as Chair of both the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees and the healthcare system’s Board of Governors, earning him the Robert E. Soukup Award for Leadership.

Zoning group, City committee divided on day care facility plan Good idea, but safety, traffic concerns plague location on York

City officials said a proposed day care facility is a good idea, but are divided about the location on York St. near City Hall.

Nine people testified in favor of the proposal for 187-195 N. York Street by Kasindra Miadenoff of Kads Development. The applicant is proposing a space that can accommodate up to 75 children. But on most weekdays, there could be 50-60 children attending, she said.

The space will be approximately 4,900 square feet with an outdoor space to the rear of the building. There would be 16 or 17 employees.

“It is a really bad spot,” said Alderman Michael Honquest (4th Ward) at a Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) Committee meeting on January 9. “I have almost been run over by

a car in the alley. I will not support a vote for approval. I love the idea of a day care center.”

“I still am a little bit concerned about parents’ cars backing out from the parking spaces,” commented Ald. Mark Mulliner (7th Ward). “I am still struggling. Cars fly down the alley.”

Scott Levin (5th Ward), chairman of the DPZ Committee, said he had a concern about whether the City would be liable for any accidents if it granted a variance for the day care request.

The DPZ Committee of the three aldermen is expected to issue a report probably after its next meeting.

The Zoning and Planning Commission (ZPC), an advisory group to City Council, voted previously 4-3 against approving the request. Negative votes were made by Lisa Callaway, Dave Garland, Susan McCoyd and Darrell Whistler,

chairman. Positive votes were made by Dan Corrado, Susan Rose and Kurt Wanke. Jordon Uditsky and Frank Mushow.

The ZPC report noted that commissioners who voted in favor of the proposal said the use is appropriate and that the owner will make all necessary adjustments to make pick-up and drop-off safe for families. Commissioners who did not vote in favor the request said using an alley as the primary access to the site was

“problematic.”

The alley runs from Palmer Drive to Third Street. At any given time delivery trucks are stopped in the alley to provide service to businesses. The ZPC report stated that using York Street would not be a feasible option due to the lack of an area for queuing of cars dropping off children at the day care center. But the report noted that a daycare center would be desirable somewhere in the downtown.

The Elmhurst Jaycees honored Whistler as their 1996 Distinguished Service Award recipient and in 2003 he was the inaugural winner of the West Suburban Philanthropic Network’s Nonprofit Volunteer of the Year Award.

Whistler is a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst.

The Civic Hall of Fame, which was established in 1992, recognizes women and men who make major contributions to the Elmhurst community. Up through 2008, inductions were conducted during the Opening Ceremonies of Elmfest. The 2009 inductee was honored at the Chamber’s Spring Luncheon in April of 2010.

Morley shares good news in his 4th address

“I think I’m in trouble.”

That’s what Bill Gooch, Chairman of the Board of Community Bank of Elmhurst, said to the crowd as he prepared to introduce John R. Quigley, president and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI), to the audience.

Every year at the annual State of the City address held early in January, Gooch and Quigley typically exchange barbs with one another about their respective baseball teams — for Gooch, the Cardinals, for Quigley, the Cubs. It’s always been easy for Gooch to take a few jabs at Quigley’s team, but with the Cubs holding the World Series title for the first time in more than 100 years, it was Gooch who had to eat some crow on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

As Gooch was speaking, Quigley slowly stood up and removed his suit coat, revealing his “Cubs Win World At the podium, Bill Gooch, Chairman of the Board of Community Bank of Elmhurst, greeted everyone Series” shirt (with his tie!), and put a who attended the State of the City address on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Quigley shares state of Chamber, upcoming centennial When Quigley took the lectern, he delivered a brief State of the Chamber report, noting the organization is currently in its 99th year and will hold its centennial celebration in 2018.

“We do our best to create an environment for success for all our members,” he said. “We do that by monitoring laws that are relative to business, by supporting fiscal responsibility and by encouraging job growth.”

He talked about some of the plans the Chamber has for its 100th anniversary, including a one-time Capital Campaign to raise $250,000 to fund several efforts in the upcoming years.

It is expected that the Capital Campaign will fund the building of a

monument to honor those who have been inducted into the Elmhurst Civic Hall of Fame.

There are also plans to raise $150,000 to set up an endowment fund for the Elmhurst College student intern reimbursement program.

The Chamber and several other businesses have taken advantage of that program, which not only connects the College with the business community but connects students with those who own or manage local companies, where they may work or at least, gather experience. Quigley and the Chamber have especially benefited from the program, having hired several interns who went on to work for member businesses or for the Chamber office itself.

Another plan is to establish a “Second Century Fund,” for purposes of supporting other as-yet- undetermined endeavors in the future.

Mayor Morley brings good news When Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley stepped up, he said he was “just there to deliver good news.”

“As mayor of this town, I feel like I am fortunate enough to be the captain of a luxury yacht that is the City of Elmhurst,” Morley said.

He was quick to credit the elected officials as well as the City staff.

“Every single Monday night of the year [except during months with a 5th Monday], 14 aldermen as well as the City Clerk and City Treasurer spend time at City Hall, either at City Council or at Committee meetings,” he said. “There are also parades, charity events, and all kinds of town hall meetings your elected officials attend.”

Morley went on to praise City departments, including police and fire, the History Museum, the Elmhurst

Public Library and others.

“The City has 270 employees who make sure the streets are clean, that problems are fixed, and that storefronts are filled as much as possible,” he said.

“In addition, there are 141 volunteer slots to be appointed every year to the City’s various Boards and Commissions.”

While not departments of the City, Morley still gave a salute to School District 205 and the Elmhurst Park District and mentioned how good working relationships help accomplish things that benefit everyone.

“We’ve done a lot together in the past four years,” he said.

The financial picture Morley then brought up the financial status of the City which was all good news.

“Our City is a $150 million corpo-

ration,” he said. “The City’s finances are better than ever. It’s how we provide all the things we do — with revenues.”

The General Fund, or “the amount in the checking account,” as Morley called it, is expected to have at least 25%-33% available by policy. This means that, if the City is in fact a $150 million corporation, it is considered policy that the General Fund have at least $12- to $15-million.

“Today, we have $20 million in the General Fund,” he said. “To put it in perspective, just eight years ago, there was only $4 million in that fund. It shows that people are investing in our community.”

There is also a Rainy Day fund, which currently has $1 million.

“Eight years ago, there was nothing in that fund,” Morley said. “We are in pretty good shape, in fact, we are in the best financial position of any town in DuPage County.”

The mayor also mentioned seeing a $2.1 million increase in sales tax revenue, reminding the audience that most of those dollars come from visitors from outside of Elmhurst who come to shop in our stores or eat in our restaurants.

“This allowed us to provide a reduction in property taxes in 2016,” he said.

Morley was grateful that the City is doing as well as it is financially, considering the state of Illinois is in pretty dire shape and that lately, the national political scene seems volatile at best.

He talked about the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF), which is the amount that is reimbursed to communities in Illinois from the state after taxes are collected.

“The money we take in in taxes is paid to the state, then the state is to pay a portion back to us, based

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault

Jan. 11 Police said that after officers responded to the 100 block of Brush Hill at around 12:45 p.m. for a traffic altercation, a suspect reportedly exited his vehicle holding a tire iron in one hand at waist level. The suspect was described as a white male, around 5-9 and 180 pounds, about 40 years old with a beard, wearing a dark sweater and dark sweatpants.

The suspect then returned to his vehicle and drove away in an unknown direction. The victim stated that he did not want to pursue the matter or sign complaints, but wanted the incident documented.

Battery

Dec. 29 A victim in the 600 block of W. North Ave. told police at around 5:04 p.m. that she met the suspect at a restaurant to discuss a new business the suspect was starting. According to police, the suspect was highly intoxicated and struck victim in the shoulder several times. The victim did not have any visible injuries, but her shoulder was sore. No complaints are to be signed (a matter of record).

Child pornography

Nov. 29, 2016 An officer received information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that Facebook reported the transmissions of two files suspected of containing child pornography. Subpoena requests were submitted. An investigation is pending.

Criminal damage or defacement to property/criminal damage to a vehicle/criminal trespass to property/criminal trespass to a vehicle/damage to city property/damage to property Jan. 8 Damage to city property was reported near Evergreen and First at around 12:16 a.m. A city light pole was struck by an unknown vehicle. Public Works was notified and responded to the scene.

Deceptive practice

Oct. 27, 2016 A complainant at a vehicle repair shop in the 400 block of N. York Road told police that he had work done on the suspect’s vehicle and the suspect wrote a check. The check has been deposited three times and returned as non-sufficient funds. The complainant sent a certified letter to suspect and the letter was returned without being signed. An officer advised the complainant this would become a civil issue. The officer spoke with the suspect, who stated she will pay for the work.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

Jan. 6 Officers responded for a domestic in the 200 block of N. Maple at around 12:03 a.m. between roommates. Upon arrival, the victim and suspect stated they had been fighting over missing clothing. The suspect accused the victim of taking her clothing and forcing her way inside the victim’s room. Both

Indecent solicitation of a child

Dec. 23 An officer received information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that the child victim had complained of being blackmailed to provide nude images of herself. An investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia

Jan. 9 George Garcia, 39, of Stickney, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 800 block of N. Larch at around 8:02 p.m. Police said Garcia also was found to be wanted out of DeKalb County on a warrant.

Jan. 8 Drew Edward Wraight, 22, of Mishawaka, Ind., and Katelynn Mishelle Heltzel, 20, of Elkhart, Ind., were issued citations by police on eastbound W. Roosevelt approaching S. York at around 5:42 p.m. subsequent to a traffic stop. Police said Wraight was cited for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to signal and no valid insurance. Heltzel, a passenger in the vehicle, was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jan. 6 • Andres Lopez, 25, of Northlake, was issued citations by police for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and disobeying a stop sign subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and Madison at around 7:12 p.m.

• Police said an unnamed suspect near Lake and I-290 was found to be in possession of five plastic baggies with white residue inside and 13 small blue pills, along with being found to be driving while license suspended, subsequent to a traffic stop at around 11:55 p.m. Charges are pending lab results.

Suspicious circumstances

Jan. 11 Officers responded at around 12:53 p.m. to the report of mutilated livestock near DuPage and Berteau. A citizen was walking his dog and found several chickens that had been decapitated lying next to oranges, pears and sliced pieces of bamboo.

Dec. 16, 2016-Jan. 11 A victim in the 200 block of Elm Park told police that over winter break his sound bar was stolen. The victim reported that the

apartment door is always locked and he suspects his roommate. Security related during a foot patrol that he observed the front door open but no one around over winter break.

Security made sure the apartment was vacant and then secured the door.

Jan. 10 Residential burglary was reported in the 300 block of May at around 10:24 a.m. Officers responded to a burglar alarm; upon arrival, they discovered forced entry to a side door. Upon checking the residence, officers discovered evidence of a burglary. Missing items included jewelry. An evidence technician responded to the scene. Neighborhood interviews were conducted.

Dec. 22, 2016-Jan. 10 A complainant in the 100 block of W. Lake St. told police she was looking at her bank account for her business and noticed three checks had been cashed. The checks were cashed to a person who the complainant does not know. The complainant notified her bank of the three fraudulent checks.

Jan. 8 • Elmhurst Hospital security told police at around 8:30 a.m. that a victim was transported to the emergency room by a Westchester Fire Department ambulance for treatment of a drug overdose. While the victim was in the emergency room, a hospital security guard recovered suspected heroin from the patient.

An officer took possession of two bags of suspected heroin and submitted the items to the property officer.

• A complainant in the 500 block of Van Auken told police at around 2 p.m. that a male knocked on the back door of her residence and asked her to check her hot water because he might have broken the water line while doing work. The complainant closed and locked the door, as she was not having any work done at her residence. After checking her water, the complainant told the male through the closed door that her water was fine.

He then reportedly yelled for her to open the door; he wanted to come in and talk to her about fixing the concrete on her back patio. The complainant stated she was going to call the police and the suspect ran to the front of the house, got into a large dark SUV and exited the area. The suspect is described as possibly an Hispanic male, approximately 30 years old, 5’5” with short, dark hair and wearing a gray jacket. The driver is described as possibly an Hispanic male approximately 20 years old with dark, curly hair.

Jan. 5 An officer responded to a complaint of suspected gunfire which occurred on the above date. The complainant was able to supply the officer with security system recordings of the suspected gunfire. At 11:08 p.m., three suspect gunshots were audio recorded. At 11:16 p.m., two more suspect gunshots were audio recorded. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 16, 2016 A victim in the 100 block of W. Virginia told police he received a letter from his credit card company regarding a fraudulent charge on the above date. The victim notified the credit card company that it was a fraudulent purchase and had his credit card cancelled.

Dec. 14, 2016 The credit manager of a trucking company in the 700 block of N. York told police that a suspect had purchased some parts from their store and paid with a company check which was returned for insufficient funds twice.

The credit manager sent out a certified letter regarding the payment. The suspect was contacted and said he would pay the balance.

He stated he thought the check would clear, but it did not.

Oct. 29, 2016 A victim told police that on the above date, her vehicle was repossessed and was being held at an auto dealership’s impound location until she settled the remaining balance with the collection agency. The victim recently went to pick up her vehicle and found it to be missing the front and rear license plates, her iPad and two pairs of sunglasses from the vehicle’s glove box. The auto dealership stated that the repossession company did not inventory any property in the vehicle and if the vehicle was stored for over 45 days, the property inside the vehicle no longer belonged to the owner. The victim was advised to provide the iPad serial number so it could be entered into LEADS.

Theft/burglary/ attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery

Jan. 6 Hoa Thi Diep, 71, of Wheaton, was charged with attempted retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3 p.m.

Police said Diep had taken numerous items from the store, removed the tags and then attempted to conceal them on her person.

Jan. 5 A victim in the 400 block of E. Schiller told police at around 7:51 p.m. that he was advised from a bank in Ohio that a suspicious attempt to withdraw money from his checking account had occurred. The suspect, described as a white male, came into a Chase branch in Ohio with a fictitious Illinois driver’s license in the victim’s name, the victim’s Social Security number and the victim’s bank account number. When the suspect was questioned, he grabbed the fictitious ID and walked out of the bank. There was no dollar loss.

Jan. 2-Jan. 3 Unlawful use of a credit card was reported in the 700 block of Prospect. A victim told police he misplaced his wallet on Jan. 2 and then on Jan. 5, he discovered fraudulent charges on his debit card. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 28 Theft was reported in the 600 block of Babcock at around 11:33 a.m. A victim told police that he had two pieces of furniture delivered to his residence. Two days later, he noticed that an electric drill was missing from his garage. The victim suspects the deliverymen may have taken the drill. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 23 Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of Stratford at around 12:49 p.m. A victim told an officer that he was contacted

by Bloomingdale’s Credit Customer Service because his application had been denied. The victim reports he never applied for a credit account at Bloomingdale’s. He contacted the store and was informed that an unknown suspect used his personal information on Dec. 20 to apply for credit.

Dec. 18 Identity theft was reported at an entertainment center in the 300 block of W. Lake St. at around 2:03 p.m.

The general manager told police he found fraudulent activity on credit cards while auditing the budget. Further investigation is pending.

on the LGDF,” Morley said. “This past year, we paid the state about $4.4 million and we usually get back roughly $100 per person. But now in Springfield, they are talking about reducing the LGDF. “But for now, our fund balances are looking good.”

Building and development At the present time, Morley said there were $54 million in new residences, $5 million in new additions, and $130 million in commercial development going on in the City.

“No one else in the County is doing as well as we are,” he said. “In fact $54 million in new homes is more than double than the next closest community.

“There are 96 commercial permits to build in our City, which allows us to increase revenue through growth rather than through taxes.”

Elmhurst 255, formerly known as the Hahn Street development, is open and occupied at the present time.

“In 2007, when I first took office as an alderman, Hahn Street was just a drawing on a piece of paper,” said Morley. “And now, even my in-laws have moved in there! They told me, ‘Now we can come to every meeting!’ ”

A summary of good news Morley gave an overview of the storm water management projects, which are currently taking a high priority in the City. Other topics were: • the police department will continue Neighborhood Roll Calls when the spring weather comes; • the fire department received

FEMA money to obtain new breathing apparatuses; • the fire department has not only a new Fire Chief but also bought a new ladder truck in the past year; • a new salt storage facility is allowing the City to buy and store up to 5,000 tons of salt for use on the roadways in winter. Ample storage allows the City to buy salt in the off-season when it is cheaper and to be able to keep it until it is used, not just run through it; • the anticipated remodeling of the Metra Station, which has not been done in more than 30 years and even then, it was just a “face lift,” not a full remodel; • the resurfacing of Industrial Drive on the north side of town in TIF #4 and adding sidewalks to the area to make it more pedestrian-friendly; • the success of Explore Elmhurst and that the trolley is coming back again this summer; • that Fruitful Yield is moving to a new site, which will triple its size.

Mayor Morley concluded his comments by saying that the City and all its entities boast a long list of honors and accomplishments, including Elmhurst being named #2 on the list of Best Places to Buy A Home in the 2017 Book of Lists published by Crain’s Chicago Business.

It brings him back to the feeling of being the captain of a luxury yacht named Elmhurst.

“It’s an honor to be here,” said Morley, who is running unopposed in the upcoming spring election. “It will be an honor to serve another four years.”

Nybo says new General Assembly means new challenges, opportunities The convening of the 100th General Assembly Jan. 11 brings with it new leadership and a renewed commitment to meeting current challenges and welcoming future opportunities awaiting Illinois, according to State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst).

The 24th District State Senator took part in inaugural ceremonies Jan. 11 in the Senate Chambers. He has served in the Senate since August 2014, and previously served a term in the House of Representatives.

“Our legislative inauguration symbolizes a new start. I hope the spirit of cooperation extends beyond today’s ceremonies, and Illinois’ leaders move beyond the partisan impasse,” he said. “It is clear that Illinois is better served with bipartisan government and bipartisan solutions.

We need a responsible approach and long-overdue reforms to a system that clearly is not working.”

With no meaningful reforms, Illinois is projected to have a $5.3 billion hole in the Fiscal Year 2017 budget and by June 30, the state could have $13.5 billion in unpaid bills. The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget has released its

three-year fiscal projections mandated by state statute, and those numbers are daunting. The projections show that under “auto-pilot” budgets over the next three years, the state’s backlog of bills could reach $34 billion by June 30, 2020.

Nybo said the lawmakers should support the kind of policies that encourage job creation and growth.

Other legislative priorities should be property tax relief; education funding and reforms that prepare young people for careers; workers’ compensation and regulation reforms that encourage business growth and jobs; and reining in state spending.

The 24th Senate District includes all or parts of the communities of Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Oak Brook Terrace, Western Springs, Westmont, Wheaton and Willowbrook in DuPage and Cook counties.

Slices of life We’d been looking forward to the week for months. We planned and packed and prepared to play. The months of waiting became weeks, the weeks became days and then it was here: vacation!

Seven days of perfectly choreographed bliss. Or maybe not.

Our trip took us on a journey to visit the world’s most famous Mickey. It’s one of our favorite destinations because it’s a place where grown adults wear silly looking mouse ears on their heads while dining on oversized, overpriced turkey legs and no one thinks that’s weird. Oh, and there are the rides and attractions.

Most vacations include a hiccup or two. Ours had several. The problems started before we ever got to the parks. We ordered brightly colored matching T-shirts to commemorate our vacation. I forgot to mention, families wearing silly matching T-shirts are also the norm at Disney. Except our T-shirts didn’t arrive until the day after we left so we never got the chance to take a dorky group photo to post on Facebook. There’s always next year.

Vacation foibles By

and prepped to hit the parks hard the next morning. I set my alarm for 6:30, which is much earlier than any family should ever have to wake up when on vacation. All hail the mouse.

Before bed, I went to brush my teeth and encountered a mysterious and scary situation. My pink travel toothbrush was already wet. I was vacationing with my husband, three sons, daughter and son-in-law. My daughter had her own bathroom and toothbrush. While perhaps a bit sexist, it seemed obvious that the pink toothbrush would belong to the mom. Apparently not. A wet brush doesn’t lie.

I did what I usually do when confronted with a mysterious and scary situation. I quizzed the brothers.

“What color is your toothbrush?” I asked.

“Pink,” said one who shall not be named to save him from embarrassment. Luckily I had a spare brush.

I’m a seasoned mom. A spare brush goes with the territory.

Despite my responsible alarm setting, we overslept the next morning. That’s because I’d set it for p.m. instead of a.m. We scrambled to get out the door and managed to be just 15 minutes off our goal time.

“We can do this,” my husband said. He’s the biggest kid in the bunch.

The roads in Florida are plastered with purple signs telling you where to turn and which way to go in order to reach the park of your choice.

We managed to get lost in the maze of purple signs. The boys found the correct route on their phones and blurted directions from the back seat. My husband gripped the steering wheel, the stress showing just a wee bit in his white knuckles.

After a few rights and a couple of lefts, we managed to reach our magical destination, just minutes before the park opened. We exited the vehicle and ran to the gates.

Most of us made it through the bag checkers and metal detectors without a hitch, but my husband (lucky guy that he is) got chosen for extra security screening. This caused him to scowl and delayed our entire party by at least 30 seconds.

We ran (I jogged) to the ride of choice and prepared to wait in line.

It’s what you do at the parks. A woman in a red dress cut through the queue in order to catch up with her party. We let her past and watched her progress. She got to a spot where all that separated her from them was a railing, which she hopped over without further ado. Her dress flew up and we all saw what none of us wanted to see.

She wore a red dress – and nothing more.

After the viewing, our day was rather ho-hum, and by that I mean filled with great rides and fun-filled family times. That, and a lot of walking.

We left the magic tired, spent and fulfilled – until we realized we’d violated a primary rule of the parks.

You’ve got to remember where you park.

To our credit, we knew which lot we were in, but not which row.

Imagine seven weary park-goers walking up and down the immense expanse of asphalt looking for a nondescript crossover vehicle in a sea of nondescript crossover vehicles. By some miracle, the same son who thought his toothbrush was pink found our car, and we didn’t even get lost on way back to our rental house.

I’m happy to report that after that we turned the corner on our trip hiccups. Except for the day the son with the pink toothbrush actually got the hiccups, the rest of the week was nearly flawless and for the next six days we went on to make our vacation great again.

Which is all that anyone can ask for. Especially a princess who wears mouse ears instead of a crown.

GERALDINE GUERINO, 70 Geraldine (Gerri) Marie Guerino was born December 11, 1945, to parents Fred and Alice Knudsen and passed away on December 6, 2016, just five days short of her 71st birthday.

World War II had ended just a couple of months before and, like many

couples, her parents were living with relatives, waiting for new housing to be built. Imagine their surprise to discover they were expecting twins!

Gerri and Terri were born at Little Company of Mary Hospital, where their mother had recently completed training as a nurse. Their father had to take three buses to get there from their home on 12th Street in Broadview.

The twins moved with their parents to 13th Street a couple of years later, where the girls attended St. Eulalia School. In 1956, younger sister Peggi arrived and a year later, the family moved into a larger house on 8th Avenue in Maywood.

Gerri and Terri graduated from Proviso East High School, where both parents had also graduated. In 1963, while attending Chicago Teachers College, they became big sisters to a brother, Tom. It was also at college

that Gerri met her husband Paul.

Gerri worked in the Admissions Office, Terri worked for one of the Deans, and Paul worked in the Earth Sciences Labs. Gerri graduated with a degree in education with a minor in math in just two years and eight months. She also studied Mandarin and her first teaching position was at St. Theresa Mission School in Chicago’s Chinatown.

In 1966, Gerri and Paul married and, in 1967, both took teaching positions at the Taipei American School, a Department of Defense School, in Shih Lin, outside of Taipei in Free China.

A true dog lover, Gerri saw her first Spitz in Tokyo in 1967 and eventually, owned three of her own. The first was purchased from a puppy vendor out of a basket on a bike in Shih Lin. The other two were obtained here in

the United States. In 1969, they returned to the U.S. where they built the home they lived in until her death.

Gerri worked for former District 46 in Elmhurst until she was forced to resign due to her pregnancy. At that time, pregnant women were considered a “distraction” and “disturbing to children.” She tried West Leyden and then Immaculate Conception High School before going to College of DuPage, where she spent the rest of her career teaching math.

Paul was an avid gardener and Gerri loved roses. Eventually, they had more than 1600 rose bushes with 650 named varieties in their garden. They were on several local garden walks as well as some hosted by the American Rose Society National Convention. The Guerinos were interviewed and featured on a Rebecca’s Garden television program. At the time of

her death, the garden had 385 bushes. Gerri is remembered by her rose friends for two hybrid bushes named in her honor — “Gerri G.” and “Elmhurst.”

Gerri is survived by her husband Paul of 50 years; by a son Gregory (Jen Bondelli), a daughter Julie (Edward) Dunham and their sons, Trevor Riley and Noah Joseph. She is also survived by her twin sister Terri (Stan) Calwell, her sister Peggi (Dan) Ellis, a sister-in-law Mary Ellen Guerino, and cousins Nancy, Karen and Susan, who were like sisters to her.

Numerous nieces, nephews, a great niece and a great nephew also survive her. A Mass of Christian Burial was held. Donations would be appreciated to the Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Cancer Center, 3160 So. 1st Ave., Maywood, 60153. Information provided by family members.

History Museum puts a fresh face forward to celebrate 60th year FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

It seems like just a few years ago the community gathered to help the Elmhurst History Museum (then the Historical Museum) a milestone, with the addition of the award for Distinguished Service, which was given for the first time.

Now it’s time to look at how the Museum will celebrate yet another milestone — it’s 60th year bringing history and happenings to the Elmhurst local community and others in the surrounding area.

On January 13, 1957, the history museum was born, starting with just 300 artifacts and drawing 500 visitors in its first six months of operation.

Known then as the Elmhurst Historical Museum, it became a quiet entry as a

department of the City, charged with recording the history and archiving the records and artifacts that shaped the background of the City of Elmhurst.

Having begun on the 3rd floor of the Glos Mansion, here we are 60 years later and the Elmhurst History Museum now spans two floors of the building, where it has evolved into an award-winning regional history museum. Today that museum presents an ever-changing array of innovative and interactive exhibits, maintains a state-of-the-art exhibition on Elmhurst’s own history, cares for more than 10,000 items in its collection, and serves more than 10,000 patrons annually from throughout the Chicago area and across the U.S. Just in time for its anniversary, the Museum recently completed a number

of improvements to put a fresh face on the interior of the Glos Mansion and enhance the visitor experience. Improvements include: Fresh paint throughout; Better lighting in the lobby and stairwell; A new digital greeting monitor; An electronic registry; Updated gift shop merchandise.

In addition, two key features were added to expand the “By All Accounts: The Story of Elmhurst” exhibit on Elmhurst history which covers the entire second floor of the Mansion. In November, a new section depicting the history of Elmhurst veterans was added, featuring photos and rare artifacts from the Museum’s collection. In December, the Museum unveiled a new display in the second floor hallway that

shares the story of the Glos family and the home’s history.

Sixty years is a long time to be in business, and the History Museum continues its endeavors to engage local people with the history of their com-

New yoga establishment comes to town

The Independent recently learned that a new yoga studio has opened at 381 No. York St. in Elmhurst. The business, called Blissed Out Yoga, is owned by Kelly Merydith and Masin Ouksel from Ahimsa Yoga Studio, which has two other locations in Oak Park and in Berwyn.

Blissed Out Yoga was established in 2010 and was purchased by Merydith and Ouksel in 2016.

Ahimsa (ah-HIM-suh) is a sanskrit term that means non-violence or non-harming in thought or deed,

according to Merydith.

“It’s one of the five yamas, or moral codes, that yogis (people who practice yoga) follow,” she said.

Students of Ahimsa Yoga Studio enjoy the excellent classes and instructors, as well as the feeling of being welcome and well cared for by instructors and staff. Ahimsa has a work/trade arrangement in which students can exchange four hours of desk work for an unlimited membership at the studio.

Friends since the 6th grade, Kelly and Masin are committed to adding more yoga classes to the schedule

including yin, restorative, beginners, and vinyasa flow, and speciality workshops and events like gong meditations. In January, there will be a Yoga for Cancer Care class on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., taught

by Karen Jansen. Cassie Quick will lead a teen yoga series in early

March.

They hope to benefit the Elmhurst yoga community by bringing more classes for students and more instructors to teach and share their passion.

“We hope that Ahimsa in Elmhurst will become a place where

many students can develop on their path to find and maintain health and well-being,” said Merydith.

Ahimsa’s special for new students is one month of unlimited classes for $49. Students can take unlimited classes at any of the three Ahimsa locations.

Sticky note wisdom stands the test of time

There is a whiteboard in my office that I’ve had for several years and the gems written on it have remained unchanged. No matter how well life and business go, it never hurts to have constant reminders of our own power.

The biggest reminder on my board, in size and importance, is a bumper sticker: LOVE > FEAR. Always, love is greater than fear.

Those two emotions are what every motivation boils down to. I can trust and leap or I can fear and back down. Or lash out. Or do any number things. In our current society, fear-based behavior is rampant. I also see that love-based behavior is responding and stepping up.

In Conversations with God, the first in the book series by Neale Donald Walsch, it says: God says, I do not show my goodness by creating only what you call perfection. I do not demonstrate my love by not allowing you to demonstrate yours.

Life here on earth is not perfection, and not about perfection. Why do we expect otherwise? How did we get the notion that life was supposed to be “perfect”? And perfection is so subjective. My perfect life is not the same as anyone else’s definition. A perfect world? Seven billion different takes on that.

I also understand that I get to demonstrate my love. The most divine expression, and only divine expression, is love. Sometimes that can be hard to wrap our heads around. The more things seem less perfect, the greater opportunity to express and demonstrate love.

2017 may be a year that is ripe for demonstrations of love.

In truth, every year is.

That is the “secret” to my success.

I once had a sticky note taped to my computer simply stating: “Love them.” When I come from that energy, be it ghostwriting a book in a client’s voice or having a chat with someone wanting to determine if I’m the right fit for them, the energy of “love them” has made all the difference. I do genuinely love helping my clients bring forth their mes-

sages and I love how my business is flourishing too.

I no longer shy away from using the word the love. I give highly intuitive highly intimate pep talks to clients when needed and they are forever grateful. I take the stage when teaching or as a guest speaker and proclaim to the audience that if they do the right thing with love, their businesses too will flourish.

For those who hear and take it in, it’s working. My inbox overflows with gratitude.

Stepping into being a demonstrator of love and being vocal has been interesting. Some dismiss me. Some envy me. Reactions of others are never in my control. All I can do is love them.

That sticky note wisdom of LOVE THEM is now on my whiteboard wisdom. I also jotted down the twoword catchphrase I picked up from hearing Patch Adams speak: Relentless love. Those two words play well with the energy of my reminder board. If I am to err in my ways, I would rather it be on the side of love than fear.

Perhaps you have you your own way of reminding yourself how to operate in the world. Too many operate on autopilot. If you do one thing differently this year, have it be that you notice how you behave and think. If your behaviors and thoughts don’t feel good or don’t bring good results to your life/love/ bottom line, know that they can change. Start now. It’s the “perfect” time.

FITT-RX, Fleet Feet raises $2000 at charity fashion show

Fitness studio FITT-RX and running store Fleet Feet Sports in Elmhurst paired up this fall to bring the second “Fall Fashion Show” with the goal of raising money for “No Frills Fun Run,” a 501(c)(3) charity.

The totals are in and the fashion show was a hit for the second year in a row, selling out at 80 tickets and raising more than $2,000 for the charity. The show featured looks from the top running vendors - Nike, Lucy, Saucony and Mizuno - while personal trainers from FITT-RX and local personalities strutted their stuff down the runway.

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Within a week, AFSCME has gone from saying they’d agree to a wage freeze to now calling for a strike authorization vote, something Gov. Bruce Rauner says puts Illinoisans at risk.

In a letter to union members Friday, Jan. 13, AFSCME Executive Director Roberta Lynch said their attempt at a “settlement framework,” which said the union would support a wage freeze but called for step wage increases, was unsuccessful.

Lynch then scheduled a strike authorization vote for Jan. 30 through Feb. 19.

Earlier last week, Rauner told Illinois News Network it was time to move on with terms from his last, best and final offer.

“We’ve been at impasse,” he said.

“A bipartisan labor board, the majority of which I did not pick, declared us at impasse. And to hold up the process in court, which is what the union leaders are doing–they’re blocking implementation in court–that’s costing Illinois taxpayers roughly $2.5 million a day.”

The governor said that’s money that could go to education, social services or other vital state government operations.

Instead of a strike, Rauner said the right answer is to work with the administration to implement common sense terms from his offer, like zero tolerance for workplace intoxication.

“We’ve also recommended a work week that’s 40 hours before overtime, like taxpayers have in their own lives, rather than 37.5,” he said.

“We’ve recommended let volunteers work in our state parks and in our health facilities to increase productivity and lower costs.”

AFSCME covers a wide range of workers like interns, physician specialists, engineers and others.

Bellock takes oath, reappointed Deputy House Leader

First female Deputy GOP Leader in state history looks ahead to tackling new challenges

State Rep.Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale) was recently sworn into office for a new two-year term serving the 47th District, citing her eagerness to work with both Democrats and Republicans to reform Illinois’ budget and spending policies and strengthen the state’s safety net for vulnerable families.

All 118 members of the House of Representatives took the oath of office for the inaugural of the historic 100th General Assembly at the University of Illinois-Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium in a noon-time ceremony.

Rep. Bellock has also been reappointed to the post of Deputy Minority Leader by House GOP Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs).

First appointed to the post in October 2013, Rep. Bellock is the first woman to serve in the #2 leadership position for House Republicans in Illinois history.

A recognized expert on state budget, Medicaid and disability issues, Rep. Bellock shared her priorities for the coming year, emphasizing the opportunity for bipartisan action in 2017.

“Our most immediate priority must be end the state budget impasse and protect the well-being of our state’s most vulnerable families; especially children, seniors and the disabled,” Bellock said. “We have a clear choice: maintain the status quo, raise taxes without reforms and force greater fiscal crisis, or go in a new di-

rection and work together on changes that create jobs, strengthen schools, lower property taxes and ensure that a strong safety net remains in place.”

In addition to her role as Deputy Leader, Bellock serves as Chief Budget Negotiator for House Republicans and as Minority Spokesperson on the Human Services Appropriations Committee. Her landmark legislation includes: the Smart Act reforming Illinois’ Medicaid system and bills requiring mental health parity, MRSA infection control, improving the Amber Alert system and strengthening child support in Illinois have been recognized on a national level.

Bellock’s 47th District includes portions of Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Burr Ridge and Western Springs.

Charity Ahlgrim to receive ECCI’s Chairman’s Award Recently retired community banker Charity Ahlgrim will receive the 2016 Chairman’s Award at the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 98th Annual Awards Gala at The Drake Oak Brook Hotel in Oak Brook on Friday, January 27, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Traditionally, the annual award is given to a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors for his/her outstanding service to the Board, Chairman and President/CEO or to a non-Director for praiseworthy contributions or performance.

“Whether for our Chamber, the Spring Road Business Association, the York & Vallette Business Association before that or any number of civic, business and charitable causes, Charity always contributes above and beyond the call to duty,” said John R. Quigley, Chamber President and CEO. Outgoing ECCI Board Chair Tim Gurrie of Pampered Chef TLG will present the award to Ahlgrim.

Ahlgrim retired as a Vice President and Business Development Officer for Community Bank of Elmhurst in September of 2016.

She was appointed to the Chamber’s Board of Directors in late 2015 after serving consecutive one-year Executive Committee terms as the appointed Treasurer (2014-15). In 2016, she served on the Executive Committee as Second Vice Chair, which included chairing the Membership Committee.

Previously, she had served two

terms as an elected Director after her 2006 Board appointment and also was a Board member back in the 1990s.

Charity A longtime Ahlgrim volunteer at the Chamber’s Steak Fry and Elmfest, both now defunct, Ahlgrim is a former member of the green-coated Chamber Ambassadors as well. She was elected to serve as Treasurer for the City of Elmhurst from 2005-09.

Ahlgrim retired with more than 30 years of community-based banking experience in Elmhurst, including the last 11 years with Community Bank of Elmhurst.

During her decades in community banking, she was active in both the Spring Road and York & Vallette business associations. She is among the Co-Founders of the Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade, along with realtor Frank Catalano Sr. and the late Doug Kuester of Great American Exteriors.

Ahlgrim is also a member of League of Women Voters of Elmhurst and a former Trustee for the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation.

A 24-year resident of Elmhurst, Ahlgrim is married to Scott Ahlgrim, Owner and Director of Ahlgrim Funeral Home on Spring Road.

Study: Illinois House rules give its speaker more power than any other state ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK A new report highlights how the rules governing the Illinois House of Representatives concentrate more power in one person than any other legislature in the country.

Illinois Policy Institute Vice President of Policy Ted Dabrowski said researchers scoured the legislatures in all the other states and found the

rules crafted over three decades by Illinois Speaker Michael Madigan are a big outlier. “[The rules allow] him to not only choose who votes and when people vote, but whether a bill even makes it to a vote in the first place,” he said.

“It’s an amazing amount of power.”

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich is asking President Obama to end his corruption sentence early. But one former Democratic state lawmaker thinks that’s probably too much to ask for.

Former Quad Cities State Senator Mike Jacobs served with Barack Obama and Rod Blagojevich. Jacobs knows them both, and he said the

Meanwhile, State Senators approved a resolution to impose term limits of five two-year terms on the positions of Senate President and minority leader. Current Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) said they intend strengthen this by introducing a constitutional amendment that would put term limits on legislative leaders in both chambers.

Civic-minded college students have a unique opportunity to gain some hands-on experience in Illinois government during this spring semester.

State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) has announced that he is seeking area college students who wish to volunteer as interns during the coming months in his District office in Lombard.

“The Legislative Intern Program provides community-minded young people an inside view of state government, including legislation and constituent communications, through supervised projects and other efforts with experienced staff,” Nybo said.

“As I head to Springfield with fellow legislators to embark on another session, interns will have a chance at truly being part of the process. Their efforts with my staff will help me get some much-needed work done to benefit my District and all of Illinois.”

The internship program will be offered from February through May. It provides hands-on experience in community relations and communications, monitoring local issues, along with research projects.

“I was given more responsibility and

creative liberty than I ever expected, and it helped me grow as a student and as a professional by leaps and bounds,” said former intern Amanda Nero, a University of Missouri student. “The people I met and opportunities I was given, made this a great way to spend my summer.”

Interns say they expect benefits to extend beyond college education and experiences.

“The connections I have made, and skills I have learned will benefit me for years to come,” said Meredith Cantey, an Indiana University student who interned last year.

“I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to intern for the Nybo Office.”

The district staff will work with students in need of education and community service credits. Internships are flexible in terms of hours and length of commitment for students who may have other obligations.

Applications are available on Nybo’s website at chrisnybo.org. Applicants are encouraged to provide a resume by e-mail to chris@chrisnybo.org by Feb. 15 for the spring semester internship program. Applications for the summer program will be accepted as well.

Roberto’s Ristorante named ECCI Business of the Year To be honored at upcoming Awards Gala

Roberto’s Ristorante & Pizzeria will receive the A.J. “Toche” Terrones Business of the Year Award for 2016 at the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 98th Annual Awards Gala held at The Drake Oak Brook Hotel in Oak Brook on Friday, January 27, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Since 1962, the family-owned business has operated in the Spring Road Business District.

A Chamber member since 1991, Roberto’s has been owned and operated by the Moreci family—starting with father Vito, continuing today with the next generation, Pasquale and Rosalia, Vito’s son and daughter.

Vito Moreci, who started out in the construction business before becoming a restauranteur, transformed Roberto’s into a fine-dining establishment with table and bar seating for eat-in customers, featuring rooms with full service catering for special events and an outdoor patio for dining al fresco on the south side of the building overlooking the 9-11 Memorial, Gazebo and Illinois Prairie Path.

The restaurant’s iconic turret-style entryway—formerly the entrance to a corner liquor store—was pictured on the cover of the Chamber’s 2001 Elmhurst Community Directory.

In recent years, the Moreci family has purchased several Spring Road properties for either redevelopment or repurposing, attracting new businesses to Elmhurst as tenants.

Named for a former Chamber President who

served almost a decade until his death, the A. J. “Toche” Terrones Business of the Year Award will be presented at the gala by Outgoing Board Chair Tim Gurrie of Pampered Chef TLG along with last year’s recipient, Café Amano.

York hockey club gathers toys, victories The York hockey club held its 8th Annual “Toys for Tots Night” on Friday, Dec. 2nd at Addison Ice Arena when the teams played host to Oak Park River Forest High School. The evening was a huge success with hundreds of toys collected, and both JV and Varsity teams prevailing over the visiting Huskies.

Since 2009, the York Hockey Club has collected over 6,000 new toys to share with under-privileged children throughout the community in conjunction with the Marines Toys for Tots program. Two Marines provided assistance at the York event and were honored with a beautiful rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” sung by Nicole Polizzi, York junior, to kick off the evening.

The York players volunteered their time to solicit support and donations from family members and friends for the weeks leading up to the event.

According to Toys for Tots representatives, the York Hockey Club col-

lection is the largest one night event in the Chicago area. “For the past several years our Hockey Club has sponsored the Toys for Tots collection,” said Mike Davis, York Hockey Club President. “It is a great event for a great cause and our kids, families, and community really get behind it to make it a special night.”

In a showing of community support, the OPRF players made donations to the York Hockey Club’s effort. York players and families responded in kind with donations of non-perishable food items to OPRF’s Hockey Checks Hunger program, which distributes food to local food banks.

The York players were more charitable to the underprivileged of the community than they were to their opponents, allowing OPRF only two goals in total for the night. The junior varsity squad posted a 3-1 victory, while the varsity club followed up with a 5-1 victory.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team downs Walther Christian Sutton provides spark with 15 points

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak in convincing fashion.

The Knights were 65-25 winners over Walther Christian in Metro Suburban Conference crossover action.

IC Catholic Prep had lost the last two games in its Christmas tournament and then lost a non-conference game to a tough Chicago St. Patrick team.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 11-5 on the season.

“We controlled the game from the start,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “Our pressure set the tone.”

The Knights led 21-8 after the first quarter and 34-12 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep outscored Walther 19-6 in the third quarter and 12-7 in the fourth quarter.

Matt Sutton led the Knights with 15 points (3 three-pointers). Austin Reed scored 11 points (2 three-pointers).

Nico Gaudio added eight points, while Alex Meurer also had eight points.

Kevin Cheng finished with seven points and Amari Reed had six points.

The Knights made seven 3-pointers in the contest.

“We had a strong offensive effort,” said Tyrrell. “Matt Sutton had 15 points and gave us a lot of energy off the bench. He was a big spark for us.

We did a much better job being patient and with ball reversals. We talked all week about getting the best shot and asking ourselves on each possession if that’s the best shot we can get? We

showed patience against Walther and did a nice job.”

Tyrrell also lauded the work of Galvin Gecsey and Gaudio. “Galvin and Nico both did a good job in the post and running the floor in transition,” he said.

Meurer and Pat Shannon also were cited for strong play. “Pat and Alex continue to bring intensity,” said Tyrrell. “They leave everything they have on the floor all the time and as a coach there is not much more you can ask for.”

Tyrrell also took time to reflect on the non-conference loss to Chicago St. Patrick. “We lost to a very good St. Patrick team,” he said. “It was a tough loss. We struggled a little in the first half. We had no flow or rhythm going. Their pressure was tough. In the second half I was proud of our guys for staying resilient. They battled and never quit. Scheduling a team like St. Patrick is a good thing. Even though we lost, we don’t get to see that type of athleticism very often. Coming home from that game I was very optimistic even though we lost. We took a step forward in being able to play teams of that level.”

That game also will feature a 10-year reunion of IC Catholic Prep’s first boys basketball team that advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the state playoffs. Tyrrell was an assistant coach on that team.

“We’ll recognize them at halftime and hopefully as many guys as possible can come back for the reunion,” said Tyrrell.

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team returned to action after a long layoff and dropped a close 56-53 Metro Suburban Conference crossover game to Glenbard South.

The loss put Timothy at 10-5 overall.

Glenbard South led 17-14 after the first quarter and 31-24 at halftime.

Timothy outscored Glenbard South 16-15 in the third quarter and 13-10 in the fourth quarter.

Joey Davidson led the Trojans with 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting.

He made two 3-pointers and shot 3-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Brandon Orange added 12 points on 6 of 11 shooting to go with five rebounds and two blocked shots.

“That’s a very big church,” said LeGrand. “We worshiped there.

It was very nice. Overall, it was a very beneficial nine days. We practiced at a couple local high schools and colleges. We spent a day at the Grand Canyon and hiked Camelback Mountain, which was crazy. It’s an experience the kids will definitely remember. I was most impressed watching the relationship building that occurred. That was a big part of the trip. Hopefully that will carry

over to the court as we continue to grow men of integrity. It was nice to see the guys there for each other.

They shared things with each other that most 16-year-old kids wouldn’t do. It was great to see.”

LeGrand said the visit to Northwest Christian School had even more meaning given that was the school Davidson used to attend. His father, Matt, who is Timothy Christian School’s current superintendent, held the same position at Northwest.

“It was fun for Joey to go back there,” said LeGrand.

LeGrand noted while the team had a blast in Arizona, it was ready to get back to business on the court in Illinois.

York boys basketball team opens WWS tournament with win Martucci scores 15 points in overtime game against Hinsdale Central

The York boys basketball team opened play in the Wheaton-Warrenville South Martin Luther King tournament with a 52-50 victory over Glenbard East.

In earlier action, the Dukes dropped a 58-48 contest to Hinsdale Central in overtime in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action.

Hinsdale led 13-11 after the first quarter and 25-17 at halftime. But York roared right back and outscored the Red Devils 11-7 in the third quarter and that same 11-7 margin in the fourth quarter to force the extra period where Hinsdale went on a 19-9 run to seal it.

Angelo Martucci led the Dukes with 15 points. He shot 4-for-6 from the field and 7-for-9 from the freethrow line. Jordan Gray added 14 points and nine rebounds. Gray shot 6-for-9 from the field.

Erik Cohn added 10 points, while Nick Trapani had nine points. Cohn shot 3-for-4 from the 3-point line,

while Trapani shot 3-for-8 from the 3-point line. York shot 39 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free-throw line (10-for-14). Cohn and Martucci each added four rebounds, while Nick Kosich had seven assists. Martucci finished with two steals.

Through 14 games, York was shooting 48.7 percent from the field, 68.8 percent from the free-throw line and 38.9 percent from the 3-point line (82 of 211).

Gray was leading the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game, while Trapani was averaging 9.9 points and Cohn was averaging 9.8 points. Kosich was averaging 7.4 points and Martucci was at 6.6 points.

Gray was tops on the team in rebounding at 6.0 per game. Kosich was leading the team in assists with 60 and also had a 1.15 assists to turnover ratio. Kosich also was the team leader in steals with 24. Trapani was next with 22 steals.

York was holding opponents to 42 percent shooting from the field and 29.6 percent shooting from the 3-point line.

York hits the road this week for a pair of back-toback WSC Silver games. The Dukes face Proviso West in Hillside Friday and head to Lyons Township on Saturday. York is 0-3 in WSC Silver play thus far and 8-7 overall.

York cheerleading team logs another Top 10 finish Dukes getting themselves ready for sectional competition

The York competitive cheerleading team has fared quite well during the initial portion of its schedule.

The Dukes opened the competitive portion of its season by taking third at the Belvidere North Co-Ed Challenge and then two days later placed first at the Joliet East invitational.

More recently, York placed seventh at the Buffalo Grove invitational.

“We’re having a very upbeat season,” said York coach Olivia Wolicki. “There were 25 teams at Buffalo Grove and we went out there and did our best. Finishing first at Joliet West was good for us. It brought the girls’ hopes up.”

Wolicki said the team continues to evolve its routines in the co-ed division where it exclusively competes in.

“Our co-ed stunts are very good,” she said. “Overall, we have a very good team. It makes us feel good when we get text messages from people saying they enjoy watching us. We appreciate that. The girls are out there displaying good sportsmanship and exhibiting good behavior.”

Wolicki noted the team is cognizant of what judges prefer seeing during routines. “We’re changing it up a lot,” she said. “We watch what judges like and we listen to the feedback. It pretty much depends on how the girls perform and how the judges like the routine.”

This year, York has four boys in the cheerleading program.

“They are all new this year,” Wolicki said. “They are gymnasts and football players. They enjoy it. There’s that old mentality that it’s not an athletic sport. That’s not true. The guys here put in the work and they see how hard it is. They are having fun doing it and we want to promote more involvement

from the male gender. We want to make it the new norm.”

Wolicki added the Dukes also have greatly benefitted from strong senior leadership. “We have very good seniors who are pumped up about the season. Getting seventh to them is not that exciting,” she said. “After Buffalo Grove, the whole team came back and had a great practice the next Monday.

The 12 seniors do a great job of uplifting everyone.”

York has competitions left at Grayslake North and Huntley prior to heading to the Lake Zurich sectional on Jan. 28. A top five finish at the sectional will get York a spot in the IHSA state finals in the Bloomington-Normal area in early February. York took fourth in the state last year in the co-ed division.

Wolicki also lauded the work of assistant coaches Emily Bowman, Aubry Gallione and Sarita Phipps.

“They have been very helpful,” she said. “The kids have been very enthusiastic about having them here.”

The York girls basketball team recorded a recent 55-42 non-conference win against St. Viator.

York led 14-12 after the first quarter, but used a 13-5 run in the second quarter to go up 27-17 at halftime. The Dukes outscored St. Viator 20-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

Junior Danielle Dennis led the Dukes with 19 points. Jaclyn Saco had 14 points, while Caylin Rufus had 10 points. Madison Park finished with six points.

Saco and Dennis each made two 3-pointers and Saco hit on 8 of 10 free-throw attempts. York shot 70 percent from the free-throw line in the game (16-for-23).

Dennis finished with seven rebounds, while Saco had six rebounds and Rufus pulled in five.

Dennis also had three steals.

In earlier action, the Dukes dropped a 61-57 West Suburban Conference Silver Division game to Oak Park-River Forest.

York led 18-14 after the first quarter and 38-34 at halftime. Oak Park-River Forest turned the tables with a 16-7 third-quarter run. York outscored Oak Park-River Forest 12-11 in the fourth quarter.

Dennis led the Dukes with 12 points, while Saco had 11 points.

Rufus had nine points, while Park had eight points and Jenna Dvorak had seven points. York shot 35 percent from the field.

York connected on eight 3-pointers in the game. Saco made three, while Hailey Walker had two, as did Park. Dennis made 8 of 9 freethrow attempts. York shot 73 percent from the free-throw line.

bounds. Dennis had six rebounds, while Kathleen Levins had four rebounds.

York also dropped a 46-31 WSC Silver game to Hinsdale Central.

In York’s 65-31 win over Oak Lawn at the Riverside-Brookfield tournament, the Dukes led 14-9 after the first quarter and then outscored their opponent 44-18 over the second and third quarters.

Dennis had 24 points, while Saco had nine points. Rufus finished with eight points. Eleven York players scored in the game. York shot 77 percent from the free-throw line (10-for-13).

Through late last week York was 12-7 overall and 3-5 in WSC Silver action.

Through 18 games, Dennis was leading the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game, while Rufus was at 9.3 points. Saco was averaging 7.4 points and Levins was at 5.9 points. Dvorak was averaging 4.2 points.

Dennis was tops on the team in rebounding at 6.1 per game, while Rufus was at 5.0 rebounds. Saco was tops in steals at 2.4 per game, while Dennis was at 2.0 steals per game. Saco was tops on the team with 15 three-pointers made. Park had 12 and Walker 11 three-pointers. Dennis was the team’s top freethrow shooter at 74 percent (75for-101).

York girls gymnastics team continues to raise scores Hill and Cronin leading the way for Dukes

The scores continue to rise for the York girls gymnastics team.

The Dukes recently logged a 129.5 team score in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet against Downers Grove North. In another recent event at Palatine, the Dukes recorded a season-high 131.175 score.

York coach Anthony Colant noted

Sydney Hill and Megan Cronin have earned the top scores in most events on a consistent basis.

“We are doing a fantastic job of pulling themselves together into a collaborative and competitive team,” he said. “While our overall team scores are still not impressive for the conference we are in, our overall progress with those scores is very impressive. Against Downers Grove North last year our team scored a 119.55, giving us almost 10 points of improvement from one season to another for that specific meet.”

Colant noted a team-first culture has been a constant presence in the

practice gym and during meets. “We have improved most in our ability to function as a team and retain a respectful and competitive attitude,” he said. “The atmosphere in the gym is now one of a team that strives to succeed in all aspects of gymnastics.”

The coach also lauded Cronin and Olivia Romano for their leadership abilities. “Megan and Olivia are two members of the team who have consistently shown leadership and determination in the gym,” Colant said. “To date, neither has had a poor attitude in a single practice and they come to the gym with a smile

on their face ready to work in whatever way I ask of them. While this attitude, of course, reflects on their scores, the most notable impact they have is helping to create an appropriate atmosphere for the team.”

Colant counts bars as the team’s strongest event right now. “Three of our five varsity girls are dismounting with double backs and two more will soon follow suit,” he said.

Colant has seen the team take major steps forward since the beginning of the season. “I am extremely pleased with the progress our team has made in every aspect of the word team,” he said. “We have become

much more of a cohesive unit and are making progress toward one goal or another in every practice. While this season may not end with us going to state as a team, it won’t be long before York becomes a contender for the state series yet again.”

Late last week, York was readying for its next competition at the Niles North invitational. “We plan on using that as a trial to put in a lot of our upgraded routines before the conference and state series, hopefully helping us gain the experience with those routines to execute them perfectly, or near to it, during the end of our season.”

The York boys swimming team notched a 107-79 West Suburban Conference Silver Division victory over Downers Grove North in recent action.

Nick Miklyukh won the 50 free in 24.25 for York. Simon DeGrace took second in the 100 with a time of 55.31.

Flanagan Waldherr won the 200 in 1:51.87 and also won the 500 with a time of 5:03.21. Jay Jensen was second in the 500.

Alex Marlott won the backstroke with a time of 54.90. Xander Hall was victorious in the breaststroke with a time of 1:08.53.

Branko Kosanovich won the butterfly with a time of 57.69. Marlott took second in the event with a time of 58.32.

Kosanovich was victorious in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.01. Jensen placed second with a time of 2:13.74.

Peter Barabolak won the diving competition with 278.90 points.

York won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:36.13. That team included Kosanovich, Miklyukh, DeGrace and Waldherr.

York also won the 400 free relay in 3:32.75 with Kosanovich, DeGrace, Waldherr and Marlott. The Dukes were second in the 200 medley relay in 1:49.34. That team included Marlott, Jensen, Hall and Gary Derwin.

In the junior-varsity contest, York won 140-23 against Downers North.

Owen DeGrace won the 50, while Alex Emich was second. Michael McKenna won the 100.

David Butterfield won the 200, while McKenna was second. Butterfield also was first in the 500. Griffin Sanders was second.

Liam Popovsky won the backstroke, while Will Yasdick was second. Sanders won the breaststroke and Nick Pomatto won the butterfly.

Tom Croster was second in the fly.

Popovsky won the 200 IM with Pomatto taking second. Simon David won the JV diving competition.

York’s 200 free relay team took first with Emich, Popovsky, Sanders and McKenna. The 400 relay team also was first with Emich, Pomatto, Owen DeGrace and McKenna.

The Dukes won the 200 medley relay with Popovsky, Sanders, Pomatto and Owen DeGrace.

In earlier action, York hosted its annual varsity invitational. Kosanovich took fourth in the 50 with a time of 23.12, while Miklyukh was fifth at 23.65.

Miklyukh was fifth in the 100 with a time of 52.70. Simon DeGrace was sixth at 53.38. Waldherr was second in the 200 with a time of 1:49.35.

Waldherr also placed second in the 500 with a time of 4:58.19. Jensen was eighth at 5:20.04.

Marlott was second in the backstroke with a time of 55.40. Hall placed fifth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:07.71. Teddy Boskow was 10th in 1:13.81.

Kosanovich won the butterfly with a time of 55.76. Marlott was third in 58.12 and Hall was fifth in 1:00.08.

Marlott took second in the 100 IM in 1:04.8. Jensen was fifth in the 200 IM in 2:14.63. Isaac Marlott was 10th in the 200 IM at 2:17.84.

Barabolak was second in diving with a score of 467.95. Cole Blank was fifth.

Advocacy group supports for ease on homemade food regulations ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Illinois’ restrictive laws on home-based food makers have limited economic growth and scared away potential small businesses. An advocacy group is now voicing support for the laws to be loosened.

Illinois’ laws once were among the most restrictive regarding home bakers and food makers.

Rebecca Osland, a policy associate at the Illinois Stewardship Alliance — which advocates for local food producers and farmers — contends that regulations favoring commercial kitchens are a barrier to initial entry and should be removed.

“The easier it is for people to get started with small business (the better),” Osland said. “When you eliminate barriers and provide financial opportunities, it is a good way for businesses to incubate. Then they can grow into larger facilities and then have the funds to make it worthwhile to move into a commercial space.”

Current state laws allow for the sale of homemade food via two ways.

The “cottage food operations” law lets an individual

sell cottage foods only at a farmers market, up to $36,000 worth of products each year.

In 2015, the legislature passed an amendment to the cottage foods operations law, House Bill 5354. This amendment favors the use of commercial kitchens for baked goods but does allow some use of home kitchens for selling baked goods outside of farmers markets.

However, it limits the amount of goods sold to $1,000 per month.

Additionally, individual counties must pass an ordinance to implement the law locally.

Osland contends that while the state has made some progress on the issue, it needs to take a private market approach and maintain a uniform law across the state.

“I don’t know of any counties that have passed that ordinance, so that means that essentially that law has not been implanted anywhere but at the state level,” she said. “As long as we can go about this safely — allowing people to go beyond just the very small list of foods — that would create that many more opportunities and that many more small businesses.

Death rate from opioid overdoses rising in Illinois ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Overdose deaths from opioids have seen an alarming increase in Illinois since 2008, and the Illinois Department of Public Health (DPH) believes it is vital to educate both the public and doctors about the epidemic to curb the problem.

Illinois had the third fastest-rising death rate from synthetic opioids in the nation, with overdoses rising by 120 percent from 2014 to 2015,

according to the latest data released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). More people have died from opioid overdoses in Illinois in 2014 than from all gun-related causes — including homicide, suicide and accidental shooting — according to a statement given by the DPH. Dr. Nirav Shah, director at DPH, said that an increasing amount of fentanyl is being found in street drugs.

“Data from our law enforcement colleagues nationally shows that the percentage of heroin that has been adulterated by these synthetic opioids has definitely gone up,” he said.

Overdose deaths in Illinois from opioids rose about 275 percent from 2008 to 2014, according to Shah. He is working with communities, faithbased groups, schools and law enforcement officials to try to halt the rise.

“If we’re really going to make a dent in the way this epidemic has taken shape, we have to start looking at it like a disease, a brain disease, and not some sort of moral failure,” Shah said.

Shah added that the epidemic is getting worse with “the very real human toll that comes from it, the costs that are associated from a fiscal point also grow.”

CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said state public health officials need help.

The annual societal cost nationwide of opioid abuse is estimated at $55 billion, according to the Center for National Drug Control Policy.

Harvest ice the 1890s way at Kline Creek Farm’s ‘Ice Harvest’ Jan. 27-29

Weather permitting, visitors will help cut and transport ice blocks Visitors are invited to harvest ice the old-fashioned way during the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s “Ice Harvest” from 1-4 p.m. Jan. 27-29 at Kline Creek Farm at 1N600 County Farm Road in West Chicago, if ice conditions allow.

Visitors will get a glimpse into how families kept food cold before

electricity and mechanical refrigeration by helping Kline Creek Farm staff and volunteers score and cut ice into blocks on Timber Lake. Then they can help transport the ice to the icehouse and see how properly stacking and insulating the ice allows the blocks to stay frozen for months — without electricity.

“Kline Creek Farm is one of the

few places in Chicagoland that cuts and stores ice the old-fashioned way,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Al Murphy, District 6.

“For many visitors, seeing the labor required during the coldest time of the year to make sure foods remained chilled through the hottest is a real eye-opener,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County

President Joe Cantore.

Registration is not needed for the free program, but visitors are encouraged to call the farm the morning of each day at 630-876-5900 to ensure ice conditions will allow cutting that day. Regardless of whether ice is cut, staff and volunteers will be on hand to show some of the tools and equipment used and to talk about ice cut-

ting and the importance of ice on a farm in the 1890s.

Sheriff John Zaruba announced today the arrest and charging of a West Chicago man by members of the Sheriff’s Office Sexual Predator Electronic Exploitation Detective Unit (S.P.E.E.D).

DuPage County Sheriff’s detec-

tives executed a search warrant on January 13, 2017, at 6:35 a.m. in unincorporated West Chicago. The issuance of the search warrant was a result of an undercover Internet investigation into the possession and distribution of child pornogra-

phy files. S.P.E.E.D. Unit detectives removed electronics from the residence and a forensic examination of those electronics revealed the presence of child pornography files.

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK The latest state economic forecast from the Illinois Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability (COGFA) isn’t pretty.

It suggested Illinois will remain an underperformer in the region thanks to manufacturing struggles and the state’s poor finances.

The joint report with Moody’s Analytics said Illinois is the Midwest’s weakest link. With soft job creation, a decreasing labor force, continued manufacturing slump and population losses, the report said the state must navigate its fiscal challenges without doing lasting damage to its business climate.

The COGFA/Moody’s report said Illinois is the only state in the region where no metro area has entered the expansion phase of the business cycle.

Four metro areas — Elgin, Danville, Decatur and Kankakee — have recoveries that are at risk of coming undone. Four other areas are in recession: Bloomington, Carbondale, Peoria and the Quad Cities.

“An uncomfortably high share of state residents are unemployed, underemployed or discouraged workers,” according to the report.

It also said that, at 11 percent, “the proportion of marginally attached and involuntary part-time workers in the labor force is the highest in the Midwest.”

House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, said the status quo is what’s hurting the middle class.

“In the last three years, we have lost approximately 80,000 citizens,” he said. “We’ve lost 29,000 jobs over the last 16 years. I don’t call that standing up for the middle class. Is that protecting anyone? The numbers speak for themselves.”

It’s possible to come back after a recession like neighboring states have, Durkin said, and he’s encouraged by Democrats recognizing the need for reforms to grow the economy.

Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, talked about how Senate leadership is ready to tackle reforms to the state’s business climate, like controlling workers’ comp costs.

“The Senate passed the 2011 workers compensation reforms that began to reign in costs while also protecting workers,” he said.

“Could more be done? Yes, and we are working on that proposal.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner said he’s encouraged Democratic leaders are coming around to offer up suggestions on ways to grow the economy.

He’s been pushing for reforms to grow the economy since before taking office two years ago.

The report said downstate is hurting more than Chicago, with a manufacturing slump punishing Decatur, Peoria and the Quad Cities.

Illinois Supreme Court hears hospital property tax case resents the Carle Foundation Hospital and said they hope the state’s high court clarifies state law “to tackle the constitutional issue and to provide clarity not just for Carle Foundation and for the public entities in Champaign county, but statewide.”

Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing hopes the court rules the hospitals should pay property taxes.

“Why should the most profitable companies in the state be shifting

their burden onto every other business and every homeowner,” she said. “Is that the right thing to do in this state? I don’t think so. And this is a national problem. It’s not just happening in Illinois.”

Prussing said one issue she hopes the court clarifies is which hospital-owned properties are exempt from paying property taxes.

‘Scott’s Law’ expanded to cover stranded motorists ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK A relatively obscure law making motorists move over when passing emergency vehicles on the side of the road has become much broader.

Enacted in 2002, Scott’s Law states that motorists passing emergency vehicles on a four-lane road must shift into the far lane, if possible. Not doing so can get you a ticket anywhere from $120 up to $10,000 and two years without your license, if you cause an accident.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Mike Link said that, as of Jan. 1, the law also covers stranded motorists.

“If a motorist is broken down on the side of the road with a flat tire and they have their four-way hazards on, people passing that person should take caution, slow down and move over,” he said. “The law is designed to get those vehicles to slow down and move over. If they don’t, they can be pulled over and issued a ticket for not doing it.”

“When only one or two justices speak about a particular issue, it’s hard to know what the other justices are thinking,” he said.

According to a court spokesperson, there’s no timeline for when the court would provide a ruling.

Link explained how expanding the law is meant to protect pedestrians, not just police.

“Anyone that’s been on the side of the road, broken down with a flat tire, they know that vehicles whizzing by at 65, 70 or even 80 miles per hour can be pretty dangerous,” he said.

The law is named for Chicago Fireman Scott Gillen, who was struck and killed by a drunk driver while responding to an accident on the side of the interstate in 2000.
