Morley delivers impressive State of the City address Three keys to City’s success: planning, planning and planning

Tuesday, Jan. 9 was one of those unseasonably warm mornings we’ve had lately when 150+ business and community leaders gathered at Community Bank of Elmhurst (CBE) for the annual State of the City address delivered by Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley.

Ken Bartels from CBE served as moderator as he usually does, but this year he was wearing an additional hat. Bartels is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI), who co-sponsors the breakfast. He will remain at the helm of the ECCI as it begins the celebration of its 100th anniversary year.

Bartels introduced ECCI President & CEO John R. Quigley who began the program with a “State of the Chamber” report, noting this was the 21st annual State of the City address.

“At 21, we’re legal now,” he quipped. “They should have served liquor this morning.”

State of the Chamber Quigley affirmed that 2018 was the ECCI’s 100th year and a year-long Centennial Celebration would be officially kicked off at the Drake Oak Brook, where the Annual Awards Gala and 100th Birthday Bash will be held on Friday, Jan. 26 from 5-9 p.m. The evening will also serve to salute the 2017 award winners which include Nancy Peterson, Ambassador of the Year; Brewpoint Coffee, recipient of the A. J. “Toche” Terrones” Business of the Year award; Ralph Pechanio will receive the Chairman’s Award; and Jack Island of Silverado Grill will be inducted into the Civic

Hall of Fame.

Starting with the finances Mayor Morley took the podium and began by announcing that the City currently had 291 full-time employees, 17 Boards and Commissions with 100 people serving, 17 elected officials, 40 volunteers and, when you count the library and the History Museum, there are 650 peo-

ple in total who make the City tick.

Morley gratefully thanked everyone, noting they are the reason the City’s is doing so well. He added that there were three secrets to Elmhurst’s success.

“The secret to our success can be summed up in three words – planning, planning and planning,” Morley said. “We now have the North York Corridor Plan, a strategic plan

for economic development, and with all the planning, we can say ‘if it happens in Elmhurst, it didn’t happen by accident.’”

He said the City’s finances continue to be strong and Elmhurst currently enjoys a AAA Bond rating, which is the top rating the City can have.

“What that bond rating means is that we get the lowest rate possible when we go out for Capital proj-

ects,” Morley said. “The Triple A rating allowed us to refinance about $7 million in debt, which resulted in a $900,000 savings to the taxpayers.

There is $18 million in the General Fund Balance, or the ‘checkbook’ if you will. Our policy is to have about 25-33% of our operating budget in the coffers, which is actually $12- to

New Metra station on the horizon The next topic Morley talked about was the Metra station which is slated to be rebuilt over the next few years.

“I met with our Congressman Mike Quigley and told him our station had a facelift about 30 years ago, but no maintenance for 50 years. I explained that we need to put our best face forward at the Metra station, which sees 120,000 riders per month or a million over the course of a year. The price tag to rebuild it is $17 million, which is a great deal, but through hard work, our staff went out to look for dollars available to help fund it. We were able to obtain a CMAP grant for $10 million and another $2.4 million in STP funding, so we already have

in development going on, 93 home permits and 243 commercial permits have been granted and seven storm water projects came on line this year.

“When you consider it, we had none five years ago, we now have the capacity for 68 acre-feet of flooding,” he said. “An acre-foot is 325 gallons of water. Imagine one foot of water in a football field – that’s one acre-foot.

“We received a Certificate of Achievement from the County for all the work we’ve done in storm mitigation. Our goal is to be able to mitigate storm water for a 100-year flood event. We’re getting there,

but it’s a lot of work and a lot of money.

Fond farewell to a friend Toward the end of his comments, Morley offered a salute to Darrell Whistler who passed away in the past year.

“He was Chair of the Zoning & Planning Commission and when I looked it up, I realized he’s been on the ZPC since before I was born!” he laughed. “When we added it all up, Darrell had served as a member of 63 boards, committees or commissions over the course of his lifetime. He is and always will be missed.”

“Our policy with economic development is, keep your foot on the gas at all times,” he said. “There’s competition out there and there is no level playing field. We want to bring development dollars to Elmhurst because it brings services to our community and broadens the tax base. When we broaden our tax base, we reduce the burden on everybody.”

He mentioned the new BMW dealership and the expansion of Toyota and Jaguar. The 192 luxury apartments at the Elmhurst 255 building, which Morley said was an increment of land that now generates almost $750,000 in taxes. He talked about the Opus development going up at First & Addison.

Accident closes St. Charles Road Friday afternoon

This car accident that took place on Friday afternoon, Jan. 12 forced the closure of St. Charles Road for a few hours after this van rear-ended a Penske commercial truck at Berkley and the railroad tracks across from York High School. Two first-responders were at the scene of the crash to investigate at which time the street was closed and detours were set up to clear the area. Even though it took place near York High School, police said the accident had no involvement with students, staff, or anyone at the school.

State of Illinois is fly in the financial ointment While it was good news for the City’s finances, there was a certain darkness lurking behind it, which was, of course, the state of Illinois.

“Financial challenges remain in our state,” Morley said. “We are in a constant battle with the state. We send our tax dollars there and they are supposed to come back, but they don’t always.

“Or they give us unfunded mandates. They come up with a great idea in Springfield and make us do it, but don’t provide money to pay for it. One example is defibulators – they want us to have them, but don’t provide them or the dollars needed to train our first responders. They direct us to do it but don’t provide funds.

“We send our taxes to Springfield and they are supposed to send a portion of it back to us. Even our sales tax is supposed to come back to us but this year, they’re even adding a 2% ‘maintenance fee’ to that.

So that is even more that they are taking away from us. As Springfield faces more and more troubles, it could be cut more.”

Obituary

James J. Wellwood, 91 James “Jim” J. Wellwood, 91, passed away at 10:53 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital following an illness. He was born June 28, 1926 in New York City to Samuel Moses Wellwood and Jeanette Smith Wellwood. He married Lucinda “Lucy” Kretschmer on Aug.14.

1954. He was preceded in death by his parents and by one sister, Janet Wellwood.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Lucy Wellwood; children Jim (Jackie), and Cindy (Charlie) Wellwood Burke Van Slyke; 10 grandchildren, Jamie (Ed) Fehr Wellwood, Jennifer Wellwood, Jimmy Wellwood, Jonathan (Shelbi) Wellwood, Joanna (Austin) Yackley Wellwood, Josiah Wellwood, Julianne Wellwood, Conner Burke, Evan Burke and Ryan Burke currently serving in the US Army; 3 great grandchildren Addison and Emma Wellwood and Delainey Yackley; and waiting for the arrival of twin Fehr’s due in February and a baby Yackley

due in July; a twin brother John (Joan) Wellwood; sister Sheila (the late Ben) Nickolson; sister-in-law Marie (Dale) Gierke; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim grew up in the Depression and was part of the Greatest Generation.

He lost his own father at an early age.

Life was hard. He helped provide for the family at an early age. Jim and his brother John were male sopranos singing at churches in the Oak Park area.

Jim was a gear head before they called it that. He worked on a plethora of old cars, boats and motorcycles growing up. He worked at a gas station pumping gas and also made machine parts for the war effort in cottage home front businesses during high school. He was a 1945 graduate of Oak Park River Forest High School. After high school he was drafted into the US Navy.

During his basic training at Great Lake Naval Base, he became sick and spent most of his time in the infirmary. He was honorably discharged after the A-bomb ended the war. He often stated that he fought the battle of the

“Great Lakes.” He wore the ruptured duck armed service pin on his hat with honor for many years. Jim attended Bradley University on the GI bill and graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He worked with a focus on sound engineer for many companies over the years. He met his wife at the Chicago Screw Company. Early in his career he worked at Ampex Studios, an early pioneer of the cassette tape industry and finished with a 23-year career at Shure Brothers (microphones and sound production engineering).

Some of the milestones in his life were designing a phonograph cartridge and microphone mixer (which was patented) and installing the pipe organ at Elmhurst Presbyterian Church. He was an avid gardener, having inherited his mother’s green thumb, which helped him become a Master Gardener after retirement. He could touch the tip of his nose with his tongue. He was very fastidious and one of his favorite bits of wisdom was, “cut once measure twice.” He was a quiet humble man

who liked working behind the scenes.

He was a member of Christ Church of Oak Brook for more than 35 years.

Running the soundboard and recording church services was one of his favorite activities. He and his wife helped many people over the years and devoted countless hours to volunteering and giving back to the community and serving those in need.

Churchville holds annual Amerio student-faculty basketball game

On Friday, Jan. 12, the Churchville Middle School Student Council held the 13th annual Marsha Amerio Student/Faculty basketball game.

Players went nose-to-nose on the basketball court as student teams rotated in and out to challenge their teachers.

The youths also took part in raffles and competitions such as shooting contests throughout the evening during intermissions.

Churchville Principal Gina Pogue Reeder served as the students’ coach.

In the end, the faculty won 48-47.

Thanks to parents and families, it was a great evening for the Churchville community. Prior to the game, the 7th grade class held a tailgate party to make signs and generate excitement for the game.

All proceeds from the event go to the Marsha Amerio Scholarship fund, which awards seniors at York High School who have been in Special Education a scholarship to use for college or technical school.

The Student/Faculty basketball game is a yearly reminder to the Churchville community of the character traits so admired in Marsha Amerio.

About the scholarship The Marsha Amerio Scholarship was established in 2003 to commemorate the life of a remarkable woman. Marsha Amerio taught at Churchville Middle School for 28 years. She

worked with students who had learning disabilities and touched everyone who knew her with her compassionate nature and giving spirit. She was Churchville’s own Pollyanna, always seeing the best in everyone, students and coworkers alike. She had many passions—she volunteered tirelessly.

She loved to exercise, garden, and travel, and she was an active member of St. Peter’s Church in Elmhurst.

She was a woman of great character.

Marsha’s sudden death in 2002 left Churchville with a void to fill and, as a result, the staff established a York High School college/trade school scholarship fund in her honor. The award is given to students who represent some of the qualities that were admired in Marsha. To date, Churchville has awarded more than $40,000 in scholarships for deserving York High School students.

More about Marsha Amerio Marsha’s influence at Churchville was such that 7th Grade student Emily Belcher decided to write her English biography assignment about Mrs. Amerio’s life. Emily highlighted Marsha’s leadership skills, her dedication to her students and her enthusiastic volunteering within Churchville and throughout the Elmhurst community. Emily’s biography was shared with Marsha’s family last year and inspired them to make a generous donation to the scholarship fund.

served a vehicle parked in front of her house playing loud music. An unknown suspect described as a white male, between 40 and 50 years old, around 6’3” and 170 pounds, with dark colored stubble on his face, wearing a black ski cap and a purple jacket with gold trim, reportedly exited the vehicle and approached her and her 9-year-old daughter. The suspect did not say anything and left the area once the complainant’s dog started barking.

Neighborhood interviews were conducted, and a neighbor told police she has seen the vehicle on several occasions.

Disorderly conduct

Jan. 9 Brian Reedy, 46, of Bensenville, was charged with disorderly conduct at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:21 p.m. An employee told police that Reedy entered the store and allegedly created a disturbance by shouting at the employee who was working at the meat counter. Police said Reedy then chased the employee to the back of the store. A manager escorted Reedy from the store, and he was contacted and later surrendered himself to police, according to police.

Jan. 8 Tristan S. Clanton, 32, of Bellwood, was charged with disorderly conduct in the 100 block of E. Lake at around 10: 05 a.m. Police said officers responded to the report of a male threatening a victim, who related that she told Clanton he would not be able to see their daughter, which caused Clanton to drive around the victim’s apartment building looking for her. Clanton was located and charged.

After that court date, her brother has allegedly been making false police reports about the victim stealing money from their mother, and then sending copies of the police reports to her employer. Attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful to date.

Feb. 23-Nov. 7, 2017 A victim in the 400 block of S. Argyle told police at around 8:50 p.m. she was being harassed through text messages from the online app Pinger. The victim related she has received texts from 17 different phone numbers between the above dates which she believes were all created by the suspect in order to harass her. The victim is willing to pursue complaints if a suspect is identified.

Jan. 10 Oliver Boryszewski, 25, of Northbrook, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 12:45 a.m.

Jan. 9-Jan. 10 A reporting officer responded to the report of a burglary to a construction storage trailer in the 900 block of N. York. A company employee arrived at work at 7 a.m. Jan. 10 and found the company’s construction trailer was broken into. An unknown suspect(s) cut the lock to the trailer’s side door and stole a yellow Home Depot rigid chop saw and an orange Dewalt® hammer drill with drill bits.

Jan. 9 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of Monterey at around 8:32 a.m. A victim told police she was notified by Credit Karma that an unknown suspect(s) attempted to use her Social Security number to open a Comcast account and attempted to change the password on her account.

A victim in the 600 block of N. York told police at around 4:34 p.m. that an unknown suspect tampered with his locked gym locker and removed a Chase Visa card from his wallet. The victim contacted his bank and learned three fraudulent charges were made with the card.

Jan. 8 Piotr Grabowiecki, 32, of Chicago, was charged with theft at a restaurant in the 400 block of S. Spring at around 9:26 p.m. Police said a victim reported that Grabowiecki attempted to leave the restaurant after he was

unable to pay his bar tab of $48.18.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:20 p.m.

A victim told police that two unknown female suspects allegedly stole a display iPhone X valued at $1000. Police said one of the suspects used a screwdriver to unlock the phone from the display, ran out of the store toward a restaurant, entered a white hatchback vehicle and fled the scene northbound on Route 83.

The first suspect was described as a black female with shoulder-length braided hair, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The second suspect was described as a black female with curly hair wearing a black leather jacket.

Jan. 6-Jan. 7 A reporting officer responded to a fire alarm at a school in the 300 block of E. St. Charles at around 8:50 a.m. Upon arrival, it was determined that an unknown suspect(s) entered the school through an unsecured door. Once inside, it appears that the suspect(s) turned the water faucets on for all the sinks located in a science class room, causing extensive water damage to two classrooms. Fire department personnel were able to turn off all faucets, and school maintenance personnel responded to the scene. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 7, 2017 A victim in the 200 block of First Street told police at around 3:36 p.m. that an unknown suspect allegedly contacted the National Personal Records Center and obtained the release of his military records by forging his electronic signature. The records were then mailed to the victim’s address. The victim suspects his mother requested the records in order to qualify for a military discount on a student loan on which she and the victim owe money. The National Personnel Records Center was informed of the complaint and will initiate an investigation.

Oct. 9, 2017 A victim at a pharmacy in the 200 block of E. Butterfield told police at around 1:32 p.m. that an unknown suspect came into the store and reportedly asked for a 32-ounce bottle of Herbal Clean Detox.

The clerk gave the suspect the product. The suspect then allegedly fled the store without paying, entered a waiting vehicle and fled the area. Total loss is $59.99.

Discipio named Middle School Principal of the Year by IPA Jacquelyn Discipio, principal at Bryan Middle School, has been selected by the Illinois Principals Association DuPage Region as the 201718 Middle School Principal of the Year. The award recognizes middle school principals who have demonstrated a positive impact on their students and learning community.

Criteria for the award includes: • Demonstrates positive impact on education and advocacy for children • Ensures the school climate is positive and reflects high staff and student morale • Demonstrates creativity and imagination in bringing about positive change • Willing to take risks to improve student learning • Moves actively to implement the goals and objectives of the school • Works collaboratively with

teachers and other staff to improve educational programs and student achievement • Anticipates emerging problems and acts effectively to resolve them • Involves the community in the life of the school and uses community resources for students.

Discipio took over as principal at Bryan Middle School at the start of the 2015-2016 school year. Prior to that, she served as assistant principal of Washington Junior High School in Naperville School District 203.

Jacquelyn was nominated by Elmhurst District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer.

“Ms. Discipio has been asked to lead monumental and transformative change in a short period of time,” he said in his nomination, “examples of which include: a successful one-toone personalized learning implemen-

tation utilizing Chromebooks in year one; implementation of a new English Language Arts curriculum and the addition of instructional coaches in year two; ongoing development of common assessments in all grade levels and content areas; and a major overhaul of the schedule to include dedicated time for interventions and enrichment and increased co-teaching for the 2017-18 school year.”

The next step Jacquelyn’s application will now be forwarded for consideration among the other nominees throughout the other 20 Regions of the Illinois Principals Association. She will also be recognized at the DuPage IPA’s annual Spring Student Recognition Breakfast on April 23, 2018.

School Board Capsules Here’s what’s happening at District 205…

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Commissioner Jim Collins was absent from the meeting, which was the board’s first meeting of 2018.

Music students honored The board recognized the district students who were selected to attend the Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) Elementary and Junior High Division annual District 1 Music Festival. The event, which took place on Nov. 4 at Lincoln-Way Central High School in New Lenox, featured middle school students from more than 60 area schools. The selected students completed rigorous auditions to earn invitations to the festival. The District 205 students who were selected to perform in the festival’s concerts included students from Bryan Middle School, Churchville Middle School, and Sandburg Middle School. Three District 205

students were selected to play in the ILMEA Junior and Senior Jazz Band Festival, which took place Nov. 11 at Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing.

IPA honors Bryan Middle School Principal The board also recognized Bryan Middle School Principal Jacquelyn Discipio during the Jan. 9 meeting.

The Illinois Principals Association DuPage Region recently named Discipio its 2017-18 Middle School Principal of the Year. District 205 Superintendent David Moyer nominated Discipio for the honor. (Look for a story about Discipio receiving her award elsewhere in this issue of the Elmhurst Independent.)

CPAs present annual audit review The meeting included a brief presentation regarding the annual audit review of the district. Klein Hall CPAs of Aurora conducted the annual audit. Andrew Mace of Klein Hall CPAs delivered the presentation about his firm’s comprehensive annual financial report of the district for its fiscal year ending June 30, 2017.

According to the accounting firm, as of June 30, 2017, the district’s assets and deferred outflows exceeded its liabilities and deferred inflows by nearly $60 million. Of that amount, about $32.5 million may be used to meet the district’s ongoing future obligations. The audit states the district had total revenues of about $155.2 million and total expenses of about $148.5 million during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017.

The Jan. 9 board meeting also featured a short presentation about proposed summer facilities projects in the district. The proposed capital projects for the summer of 2018 are estimated to cost about $1.3 million.

The projects included tuckpointing at York High School ($175,000), Emerson Elementary School ($125,000) and Jackson Elementary School ($200,000), as well as the replacement of the auditorium roof at Sandburg ($145,500), the replacement of the cafeteria roof at York ($150,000) and the replacement of the chiller at Field School ($150,000).

The program, which will begin at Conrad Fischer Elementary School, will roll up one year at a time, with full implementation (kindergarten through fifth grade) in the 2023-24 school year. Staff members supporting the program gave a presentation to the board at the last board meeting on Dec. 12, 2017. The two-way immersion dual language program will replace the traditional Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) program.

Speaking at the Jan. 9 meeting, Moyer described the two-way immersion program as a phenomenal enrichment opportunity. Board member John McDonough stated the two-way immersion program is transformational and “a gem of a program.” Board president Shannon Ebner said the dual-language immersion program has been discussed for many years, adding that she feels the TBE program is not working. Ebner said that there is evidence that the Dual language immersion dual-language immersion will help program approved both native-Spanish and native-EnBoard members voted unanimous- glish speakers.

A dual-immersion class would ideally include 50 percent native-English speakers and 50 percent native-Spanish speakers. Fischer students will have the priority to join the program. Students at other district schools would have a chance to opt in through a lottery. Families at Fischer and other district schools who are not interested in the immersion program will not be forced to enroll, and no students will be forced to leave their home schools.

Participation fees set for boys, girls lacrosse The board also voted unanimously to approve that participation fees for York’s boys and girls lacrosse teams be set at $175 per student beginning with the spring 2018 season. Until this year, boys and girls students and their families have paid the full cost of participation. Beginning this year, the IHSA has given lacrosse equal standing with other high school sports. The fee of $175 is consistent with participation fees in York’s other athletic programs.

The board will hold its next meeting on Jan. 23.

Elmhurst Art Museum presents In This House Exhibition explores form, functionality within historic Mies van der Rohe home

The Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM) presents IN THIS HOUSE, a group exhibition featuring new sculpture and a site-specific curtain by acclaimed artist, writer, and curator Michelle Grabner. The show will also include collaborative works by Grabner and Brad Killam, and works

by Paula Crown, Tony Tasset, and James Welling. The exhibition will be presented in Mies van der Rohe’s McCormick House Jan. 20-March 18, 2018.

“Regular exhibitions within the McCormick House grant new, ongoing interpretations of the home built by one of the 20th Century’s greatest architects,” said Executive Director John McKinnon. “We are excited to host a new group exhibition featuring Michelle Grabner, who has made a wide variety of works about the domestic throughout her career.

Additionally, she and her husband Brad Killam used their own suburban home as a platform for avant-garde art The show’s title stems from an advertisement for prefabricated housing designed by Mies, for which the McCormick House was a prototype.

The 1955 brochure states “In this house, architecture and technology have combined to contribute a new dimension.” The works in the exhibition expand on this intersection and celebrate the formal languages that inhabit domestic structures. Materiality, repetition, color and spatial order will be featured and minimally distributed throughout the volumes of the McCormick House living

space.

A public artist talk with Grabner will be held on opening day, Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m.

About the artists Michelle Grabner will contribute a series of cast iron forms designed by the Kohler Company. These reductive plumbing fixtures are heavily coated in black oil pigment stick to emphasize their abstract properties over their functional attributes.

Grabner will also contribute a selection of cast brass and iron textiles and household articles that function through repetition.

Michelle Grabner and Brad Killam will create new mobiles for the museum’s main space. The large piece will feature a painted canvas with garbage can lids attached to it. Together, they will also exhibit a video from the 1990s where Grabner and Killam passed their son Oliver back and forth to each other.

Paula Crown’s series of cast red plastic Solo Cups show how color and design of disposable materials reveal social conditions.

Tony Tasset’s Domestic Abstractions reinforce tactility and familiar materiality as a means to critique gestural abstraction. These finely crafted pieces capture abstract forms with animal hides and fur often used as interior design elements.

James Welling’s photographs of the Farnsworth House in Plano, IL study how glass and light breakdown the spatial volumes of architecture and introduce the ontologically different order: The physics of the color spectrum.

Just reward: A 2017 comeback story for the ages

Lisa Creason’s life changed overnight.

After working as a certified nursing assistant in Decatur for more than a decade, on Oct. 9, 2017, she walked into work as a registered nurse.

It was more than just a title change—more than a pay raise, too. That day, a hard-fought education, a crushing loss, a legislative battle spanning two years and a shot at redemption all paid off.

Creason’s dream had come true.

Her comeback story starts in the same place it ended, Decatur. More than 20 years ago as a teenage single mother, Creason stole money from a sandwich shop cash register in order to feed her daughter. She spent one year in prison as a result.

But she never could have imagined the scarlet letter that crime would become.

Creason fought to rebuild her life over the next two decades. She started a nonprofit to combat violence in her community. She raised three children despite the death of her fiancé. She went back to school, and received a waiver from the state to work as a certified nursing assistant.

But she wanted more. Her earnings weren’t enough for Creason to be completely independent, and she desperately needed to move her family to a safer part of town. She returned to school again to begin the process of becoming a registered nurse.

“I just want to go to work as a nurse, take care of my kids and get off of government assistance,” Creason said at the time. “That’s it.”

After countless hours of work— whether buried in books on the bleachers at her son’s football games or burning the midnight oil with an early-morning shift the next day—Creason graduated with an associate degree in applied science in nursing from Richland Community College.

She called her mom in tears.

“I will never forget coming home from the school and calling my mom and telling her I passed the final. I’m done,” Creason said.

But that wasn’t enough for the state. Despite her graduation, Creason was denied access to the test she needed to become a registered nurse due to the crime she committed decades earlier. She was crushed. But she fought back.

Creason’s struggle took the form of Senate Bill 42. The bill would allow those with forcible felonies on their records (other than sexual

offenses) to seek waivers from the state to obtain health care worker licenses, provided the convictions occurred more than five years prior to applying for a waiver.

Creason drove to the Statehouse every day of legislative session for two years in support of the bill, talking to anyone who would listen about the need to provide second chances for Illinoisans like her.

Against all odds, she succeeded.

After passing the General Assembly and receiving Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature, SB 42 took effect January 2017.

Free to take the test she needed, Creason hit the books yet again in preparation for the final chapter of her journey. She passed. Creason is now a registered nurse in the state of Illinois.

That brings us to 2018.

Illinois still puts up too many barriers for ex-offenders seeking work, driving up the odds of recidivism and costing taxpayers millions as a result. And even for those who haven’t served a sentence, occupational licensing laws can be far too costly for Illinoisans trying to climb the economic ladder.

A November 2017 report from the Institute for Justice showed Illinois imposes particularly harsh restrictions on a number of seemingly arbitrary occupations.

Sign language interpreters in Illinois are required to pay a $900 fee, complete over four years of education, and pass two exams to obtain a license despite the fact that 29 states don’t license the profession at all. A cosmetologist must complete 350 days of educational training to practice in Illinois, but an EMT can be licensed after just 37.

Few individuals possess Creason’s resilience. Most would have just given up. That’s a problem, especially in a state with meager jobs growth and where too many find it in their best interest to leave for greener pastures.

State lawmakers would be wise to re-examine the barriers to second chances and first careers throughout the state.

So why should we pay those who work for us when they don’t do their jobs?

Sadly, many of our own employees are telling us they don’t plan to do much of anything this year. By “our own employees,” I mean public employees, those paid with taxpayer dollars—more specifically, elected Illinois state lawmakers.

There’s a growing sentiment under the dome in Springfield that, because of a number of factors, the 2018 legislative session scheduled to start later this month is going to be a throwaway one.

As in, why should they even bother showing up?

Majority legislators already received their $5 billion income tax increase. They approved a budget last summer for the first time in more than two years, even though it’s unbalanced despite the $5 billion in new tax revenue annually.

And, most significantly, this is an election year, a big one at that.

Vulnerable Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner faces a primary challenge from Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, after a disastrous 2017 in which he signed separate pieces of Democrat-pushed legislation that make Illinois a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants and allow taxpayer funding of elective abortions.

A handful of members of his own party joined majority Democrats to override his veto of the massive tax increase. And he infamously admitted publicly that he isn’t “in charge.”

Powerful House Speaker Michael Madigan, the person who apparently is in charge, also will be trying to hold on to his Democrat majority so he can be rubberstamped to an 18th term as his chamber’s leader.

In recent days, many lawmakers told Illinois News Network that, given what will be among the most contentious and certainly most expensive gubernatorial elections in Illinois history, they don’t expect to accomplish much of anything this year. Some, particularly on the Republican side, even suggested that would be a good thing.

“Generally speaking, the less we meet the less damage can be caused,” Rep. Joe Sosnowski, R-Rockford, said last week. “I think the less that the state legislature does, the better.”

The General Assembly has, in fact, done more harm than good for, well, quite a while now.

Illinoisans paid the highest combined local and state taxes in the nation before last summer’s income tax hike. As a result of that tax burden, more residents are fleeing Illinois than any other U.S. state.

Despite Rauner’s and job creators’ pleas, the General Assembly has done nothing to help reduce the state’s highest-in-theMidwest workers’ compensation costs, which are driving wellpaying manufacturing jobselsewhere as well.

And then there’s the pension crisis. State officials say Illinois’ five public pension systems are underfunded by $130 billion. But actuaries maintain the pension debt probably is more than $200 billion when more realistic rates on investment returns are used to calculate it. Yet legislators sit on their hands and hope the insurmountable debt goes away on its own.

Given Illinois’ mountain of fiscal problems, legislators doing nothing in 2018 would be a dereliction of duty.

“I think that’s the conventional wisdom now, that nothing will get done,” state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said. “But that’s not what the people of this state want.”

On Saturday, Dec. 9, my 8-yearold daughter competed in Tampa, Fla., for a Nationals Cheer Competition where she and her Leyden Bears 8U teammates came in first place.

Youth Commission hosts workshop on teen depression On Thursday, Feb. 1 from 7-8:15 p.m., the Elmhurst Commission on Youth and Elmhurst/Linden Oaks Behavioral Health are hosting a workshop called “Teen Depression: Healthy Habits and Coping Strategies” at the Elmhurst Public Library.

Depression is a real and treatable brain illness. It can be caused by many different life stressors and changes in brain chemistry. At this workshop, you’ll learn about the warning signs and symptoms of depression in teens and healthy ways to combat these symptoms.

Senior Lifestyle January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month In recognition that January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, VNA Health Care wants women to know that cervical cancer is a highly preventable and treatable cancer, but only if women take the steps to get screened and vaccinated. In 2018, an estimated 13,240 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, and 4,170 will die from the disease.

The current recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding cervical cancer screening is having a pap smear every 3 years for women age 21-65. Women age 30 to 65 years who want to lengthen the screening interval may opt to have a pap smear with human papillomavirus (HPV) testing every five years. Vaccinations

can protect people from getting the types of HPV that most often cause cancer and genital warts. Vaccines that protect against the types of HPV that cause 90% of cervical cancers, as well as several other diseases and cancers, are recommended to be given to girls and boys ages 11 to 12 years of age.

About 80% of women will get HPV at some point in their life, but in the vast majority of women these virus will not cause any symptoms or problems. HPV infections that don’t go away can cause changes in the cervix cells, and those changes can lead to cervical cancer. This happens over 10 to 20 years. Many women younger than 30 will have HPV, but these infections are more likely to go away.

Resident celebrates centenarian status Bertha Anderson turns 100 years old

She was born to Scandinavian immigrant parents on a farm in Clare, Mich., on January 21, 1918. Now, 100 years later, R. Bertha Anderson is here in Elmhurst to celebrate the status of being a centenarian.

Being the youngest of two sisters and one brother, her family moved to Chicago and settled in the Austin area on the city’s west side. There, she attended Austin High School, was active in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church forming a girls club from her Confirmation class. This club lasted all of their lives, meeting on the third Friday of every month, celebrating their sisterhood. Bertha is now the sole survivor.

She found the love of her life James Clarke while attending Austin High. As their romance bloomed, they married in May of 1939 living in a two-flat on Chicago’s west side. With the onset of World War II, Jim was drafted and stationed in Alaska. As life unfolded living in this new wilderness, three children were born -- Jim, Barbara & Gary.

They moved to Elmhurst in Aug. of 1951 and settled on Saylor Ave., where they raised their family. Bertha’s life revolved around her family, her work and her faith. Her love of singing brought her to sing in the Epiphany Lutheran Church choir; however she eventually transferred to St. Peter’s United Church of Christ where she holds this membership today.

As Bertha has resided at Elmhurst Extended Care for more than 13 years, she is still quite active. She is the proud grandmother of five and great grandmother of seven. She enjoys Bingo, bowling, sing-a-longs, and daily exercise programs.

Her thoughtfulness is enjoyed by everyone who receives her cards, which are faithfully sent.

Her family and friends wanted all residents and readers of the Elmhurst Independent to think about Bertha on her momentous day.

On Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., travel expert Rick Steves, best known as the host of the acclaimed PBS television series Rick Steves’ Europe and the author of several bestselling guidebooks, will present Travel as a Political Act, part of the Roland Quest Lecture Series at Elmhurst College.

It will be held in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Steves believes there is more to travel than good-value hotels, great art and fine cuisine. Americans who “travel as a political act” can enjoy themselves and come home with a better understanding of the interconnectedness of today’s world.

In a slideshow lecture, drawing on lessons learned while exploring Europe, Central America, Asia and the Middle East, Steves will talk about the transformational power of travel, and how to travel thoughtfully and gain a broader perspective.

Ralph Pechanio to receive ECCI Chairman’s Award Ralph Pechanio of Elmhurst will receive the 2017 Chairman’s Award at the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 99th Annual Awards Gala and 100th Birthday Bash at The Drake Oak Brook Hotel in Oak Brook on Friday, Jan. 26, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Traditionally, the annual award is given to a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors for his/her outstanding service to the Board, Chairman and President/CEO or to a non-Director for praiseworthy contributions or performance.

“Ralph is a touchstone through which multiple generations of business people, civic leaders and community volunteers have connected dating back to the 1970s,” said ECCI President & CEO John R. Quigley.

Outgoing ECCI Board Chair Joe Muchow of E.L. Foust Co. will present the award to Pechanio.

In 2017, Pechanio served as the appointed Treasurer on ECCI’s Board of Directors for the third straight year and remained the primary donor to both the Ralph P. En-

dowment Student Internship Fund and non-endowed student internship fund at Elmhurst College.

An active Chamber member for 45 years, Pechanio also has served three Board terms as an elected Director (1980-82, 1987-89 and 199092), including tenures as 1992 Chair (then President) and as Treasurer in 1981 and 1990.

A green-coated Chamber Ambassador since 1992, Pechanio is a twotime recipient of the Ambassador of the Year award (2011 and 1993).

Prior to Elmhurst Federal, he served as a Savings and Loan Examiner at the State of Illinois’ Department of Financial Institutions (1964 and 1967-70).

Pechanio graduated from DePaul University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science of Commerce with a major in accounting and then served in the U.S. Army (1965-67).

He and his wife, Georgette, have resided in Elmhurst since their marriage in 1969.

Nancy Peterson named ECCI Ambassador Of The Year Nancy Peterson of Elmhurst will of Commerce & Industry’s 99th Brook Hotel in Oak Brook on Fribe honored as 2017 Ambassador of Annual Awards Gala and 100th day, Jan. 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. the Year at the Elmhurst Chamber Birthday Bash at The Drake Oak The award is presented annually to a member of the green-coated Chamber Ambassadors for his/her outstanding service.

Peterson has served as a Chamber Ambassador for the past three years, while representing the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry, a Chamber member since 2013.

“Nancy is an amazing person with great empathy for those in need,” said Chamber President and CEO John R. Quigley, “and an unbounding capacity for giving back to her community.”

As ECCI’s public relations team, Ambassadors welcome new members at their Grand Opening celebrations with ribbon-cuttings, and

join members celebrating Grand re-Openings, major anniversaries and office expansions or relocations.

As a Board member, former Treasurer and Capital Campaign Committee member of the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry, Peterson helped raise more than $900,000 to construct a new 2,500-square-foot facility on Yorkfield Presbyterian Church property.

The Food Pantry has hosted one of the Chamber’s monthly Membership Breakfasts in each of the past two years.

Immediately following her retirement after 21 years as a school psychologist at Wheaton North High School, Peterson assumed the position of Treasurer of the then-

Food Pantry Committee. She is a Past President of the West Suburban School Psychologists Association and Illinois School Psychologists Association.

Peterson has served on several board and committees at Yorkfield Presbyterian, where she also teaches Sunday School to high schoolers and serves as coordinator of the ushers.

She earned a Master’s of Arts degree (1996) in School Psychology from Illinois State University in Normal and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (1974) from Millikin University in Decatur with a double major in psychology and sociology.

In 2011, ISU’s Psychology Department awarded Peterson as “Alumna of the Year.”

Local Scout Troop 82 pitches in to help the hungry

Close to 40 Boy Scouts, leaders and family members of Boy Scout Troop 82 in Elmhurst spent part of their recent winter break to venture to the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva, to volunteer their time and effort in packing meals for distribution among the Food Bank’s network of partners.

In all, 7600 pounds of food were packed, enough for 6350 meals for distribution to more than 800 network partners.

The partner feeding members include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and youth and senior feeding programs that serve more than 60,000 hungry neighbors each week in Northern Illinois.

“This has become an annual tradition for Troop 82 and a great way for the scouts to give back to the community,” said Scott Glosner, Community Outreach Director for Troop 82. “The scouts and families have fun doing it and it feels good to help those in need!”

The Northern Illinois Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, a non- profit organization that engages the community in a commitment to feed our hungry neighbors across 13 counties.

The NIFB accepts volunteer help throughout the year from individuals, families and groups but the most help is needed January through April.

York’s Dollaske named assistant tennis coach of the year Helped lead Dukes JV girls team to historic season; lauded for work with student-athletes

In high-school athletics the contributions of all coaches on a staff are vital to a program’s success.

One particular York High School coach recently was recognized for her efforts. Kara Dollaske, an assistant coach for the York girls tennis team, recently was named assistant coach of the year by the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association.

This past fall was Dollaske’s sixth season with the program.

She is the JV 1 coach on Tres Heimann’s staff.

“It’s pretty flattering,” said Dollaske, who is a school counselor at York. “I was nominated by Coach Heimann. I didn’t really expect it.

We had a historic season at the JV 1 level. It’s nice that our program has grown so much and to be honored for that growth and improving the JV level so much is pretty cool.”

Dollaske previous coached soccer and poms at Waukegan High School, but loves numerous aspects of tennis. “It’s a lifetime sport and it’s such a sportsmanship-focused

sport,” she said. “It’s competitive but it’s also a friendly game. I love what it brings out in the girls. It teaches a lot of valuable lessons.

You can be a tough competitor and a good sportsman. I enjoy teaching those things to the players, especially at the younger levels and fostering that in each player. And the weather in the fall is gorgeous.”

Dollaske’s JV 1 team went 27-2 this past fall and took second in the tough West Suburban Conference Silver Division behind perennial power Hinsdale Central. York also won two eight-team invites and two quads.

“We’ve had a lot of growth in the overall program,” she said. “We are up to more than 100 girls in the York tennis program. The girls at that level have tenacity and want to get better and make it up to the varsity level. That’s what we prepare them for. Every player wants to go out there and play their best and contribute to the team. That was what was so great with this year’s team. We took second in conference and we don’t normally do that. We were one point behind Hinsdale Central in the conference tournament. We can’t do that without depth. It’s not just the No. 1 singles player doing well. It’s up and down the lineup. We have a solid core of players. It’s a popular sport at York and now we have a lot of girls hitting outside of the season

The York boys swimming team recorded a recent 151.5-31.5 victory over Glenbard West in West Suburban Conference Silver Division dual-meet action.

York won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.02. That team included Anthony Bauer, Jay Jensen, Branko Kosanovich and Ben Harrington.

Isaac Marlott won the 200 with a time of 1:58.50, while Harrington took second with a time of 2:03.63.

Jensen was a winner in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.66, while Brennan Sanders was third at 2:22.03.

Simon DeGrace won the 50 free for York with a time of 23.50, while Will Salek was second at 26.31. Simon David won the diving competition with a score of 168.65. Jonathan Virgio was second.

Marlott took home the butterfly title with a time of 57.14. David Butterfield was second at 1:06.77. Kosanovich won the 100 with a time of 50.64.

Jensen was second at 52.71.

DeGrace won the 500 for York with a time of 5:19.19. Gary Derwin was second at 5:32.46. York won the 200 relay with a time of 1:35.95 with Harington, Michael McKenna, Jensen and Kosanovich. York’s second entry into the 200 relay was second at 1:38.62 with Marlott, Butterfield, Nick Ward and DeGrace.

Kosanovich won the backstroke with a time of 58.38, while Salek was second at 1:04.99.

Dollaske, who played tennis at Maine South and was part of the program’s 2001 state-championship team, has a good idea why the program continues to expand.

“We’ve grown this strong family,” she said. “We have a strong varsity team all the way down to JV Green, which is the players who are beginners in the sport. “There is a place for all of them and ultimately it helps the strength of the program.

We mix it up and keep it fresh.

York has done a really great job of pushing students being involved in activities after school. It’s OK that a newcomer to the sport comes out.

They give it a shot and they like it and then word spreads. Everybody has fun and it continues.”

Dollaske said the program benefits from a strong coaching dynamic. “All the coaches get along well,” she said. “It’s great that Tres also is in student services because we get to collaborate and see each other frequently. We also get to see the girls when they come through the lunch room or when they see us as counselors. It’s nice that all four coaches are in the building. It helps that the girls see us every day.

We mix it up and keep it fresh. The coaches are doing different things in practice because we only have a certain amount of court space. One coach might do conditioning one day and another is running a drill.

We’re creative with the facilities we have because we have so many girls.”

Heimann was effusive in his praise of Dollaske in his nomination comments. “Coach Kara Dollaske has numerous characteristics that make her an excellent candidate for assistant coach of the year,” Heimann wrote. “She has all the attributes of a strong assistant coach, she is knowledgeable, ethical and understands the importance of communication. Coach Dollaske is very organized and has the best interests of the program in mind with her planning and helps the program run very effectively.

Coach Dollaske has great knowledge of the sport of tennis. She is able to teach strategies and technical aspects in a simple, yet effective way. Players respond to her in a very positive manner. Coach Dollaske is able to get the most out of every player from the top of the lineup all the way through the bottom.”

Heimann said there is one particular aspect that sets Dollaske apart from most of the pack. “Her ability to motivate student-athletes,” he wrote. “She does not use a one-

size-fits-all approach. She values relationships and responsibility and reaches every young lady in a unique way. All athletes respond well to her.”

Matt Johnson, the team’s JV 2 coach, gives a lot of credit to Dollaske for his growth as a tennis coach. “When I began coaching I did not know much about tennis,” Johnson wrote in a letter to the application committee. “Kara, along with our head coach Tres Heimann, took me under her wing to show me the ins and outs of a game in which I had little experience.”

Johnson is impressed with Dollaske’s ability to adapt. “Despite meticulously planned practices with clear objectives, Kara demonstrates an uncanny ability to recognize unplanned teaching opportunities with her athletes. She adjusts on the fly and caters her practices and carefully calculated changeover conversations to suit her individual players. Kara knows how to motivate each athlete on her team, in what ways she can bolster their

strengths, how to work on their areas of improvement and most importantly how to bring forth their best effort.”

And Johnson added Dollaske’s behind-the-scenes dedication has been instrumental in the program’s success. “While Kara’s on-thecourt coaching ability distinguishes her as a prominent coach, what she accomplishes behind the scenes is almost more impressive,” he wrote. “York’s girls’ tennis program has skyrocketed from 52 to 112 athletes in the last two seasons and Kara has been instrumental in its sustained growth. Kara’s efforts in organizing countless clothing orders, planning Saturday invites, coordinating bus schedules, constantly communicating with parents and hundreds of other items often go unnoticed despite their significance. Kara’s coworkers and coaches from other schools look at her as someone who will speak up, take charge and advocate for her players and students above all else.”

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team showed no signs of rust after a long layoff.

The Trojans, who due to the school’s annual Renew initiative had not played since the end of the York Jack Tosh Holiday Classic, started 2018 off on the right foot with a 45-40 Metro Suburban Conference crossover win against Glenbard South.

“Defensively, both teams were pretty good,” said Timothy Christian coach Scott Plasier. “It was one of those games where it was back and forth throughout where you make a couple free throws down the stretch.”

Timothy won the game after Justin Baez secured a rebound on a missed Glenbard South 3-pointer. Baez was fouled on the sequence and hit two free throws for the final five-point margin.

“They had a pretty good look at a 3 that could have tied it,” said Plasier. “Justin was fouled and made the free throws. We played hard and we played well defensively. I thought this was one of our best efforts of the year and it came against a pretty good

Plasier also was impressed with how his team defended against Glenbard South’s top player. “He’s a really good scorer,” said Plasier. “We did a really good job against him. It was a team effort. They run a lot of ballscreen action. We played a little man and zone. Our zone was as active as it has been. We closed the gaps with dribble-penetration and got back out on their shooters. The boys rebounded fairly well and we were really good with gap control and closing back out.”

Ty Merrick led Timothy in the rebounding department with 13 and also had nine points. Plasier also lauded the play of Michael Thomas and Baez. “Michael Thomas had another solid game defensively and offensively,” he said. “Justin also played well.”

Plaiser noted the team received a boost from Chris Brooks, who was inserted into the starting lineup. “Chris had played limited minutes up to this point,” he said. “He started for us and played really well against Glenbard South. We put him on their best scorer and he did a really good job. We had some good minutes from Chris.”

The win moved Timothy to 10-4 overall. The Trojans are 5-0 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play (Glenbard South is a member of the larger-school Blue Division).

The coach was thrilled with how his team responded after the long layoff.

“Especially after dropping three games in a row at York,” he said. “We didn’t play from Dec. 28 to Jan. 12.

The kids did a really good job of staying focused in practice. We got quite a bit better defensively in practice.

We went out there and it showed. We learned a lot from the York tournament. We played against tough competition and that helped us compete against Glenbard South. We played really hard and cleaned up some deficiencies we had at York.”

The Trojans played Guerin Prep earlier this week to close out the first round of Red Division play. Timothy plays IC Catholic Prep in a neighborhood game on Friday before seeing longtime rival Illiana Christian on Saturday.

“That will be a long week for us,” said Plasier.

In the Glenbard South game, Timothy led 13-4 after the first quarter and 27-20 at halftime. Glenbard South outscored Timothy 11-6 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 33-31.

Thomas led Timothy with 11 points. Baez had 10 points, while Merrick had nine points and Brooks chipped in eight points. Baez also had five rebounds. Merrick and Brooks each had four assists, while Merrick had two steals.

In addition to going 3-1 thus far in West Suburban Conference dual-meet action, the York girls bowling team also has found success in tournament action.

The Dukes varsity took second at the Rich East Invitational while the York junior-varsity won the tournament.

York also was sixth in the Silver Division at the recent Strikefest tournament, which is one of the largest events in the state. The Dukes were third at the varsity level and fourth on JV at the West Aurora Invitational.

Gould has been enjoying success throughout the season. She rolled a 276 high game and a 654 series for three games York’s WSC dual meet against Leyden. She was fourth at Rich East as well.

Gould, a senior, leads the team with a 197 average in conference and a 190 overall. Junior Krystyna Panek is at 170, while seniors Lauren Steck, Nora O’Brien and sophomore Lauren Rickenbrode all are sitting around 167 overall.

“This team works really well together,” said York coach Katie Turnbull. “They have a great attitude and are an awesome group to coach.”

Turnbull noted the team has been open to working on strategic parts of their games. “They are constantly learning more about strategy and making adjustments. They are doing a great job of learning to move inside when the lanes start to dry out.

We are constantly getting better at that.”

And as any bowling coach will say, the Dukes are hard at work on spare improvement. “We always can improve on our spares, especially single-pin spares,” said Turnbull.

Turnbull lauded the recent play of O’Brien. “Nora has stepped up as our leadoff bowler,” she said. “She bowled a 223 in our game at West Aurora that lead to the team’s first 1,000 series of the season. She is averaging 167 and is making fantastic progress.”

Through late last week, York had four dual meets and four tournaments left prior to the postseason.

“While the varsity has been bowling well all season, as a team we just seem to be hitting our stride in the last week or so,” said Turnbull. “Our goal always is to hit our peak at the end of the season and I still think our best series is yet to come.”

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team continued its winning ways with a recent 74-42 Metro Suburban Conference crossover win against Walther Christian.

The Knights led 16-7 after the first quarter and 29-21 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep kicked it into another gear in the second half, outscoring Walther 18-9 in the third quarter and 28-12 in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Ryan Wojalewicz led the Knights with 15 points on the strength of 7-for-9 shooting. He also had nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Kevin Cheng turned in a strong performance as well with 14 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Kris Askew added six points and eight rebounds. Nico Gaudio finished with 13 points, while Pat Shannon and Griffen Eichhorn each had six points. Cheng hit a pair of 3-pointers in the game.

IC Catholic Prep moved to 12-5 overall with the win.

York girls basketball The York girls basketball team shook off a pair of losses coming off the holiday break by scoring a pair of West Suburban Conference Silver Division victories against Hinsdale Central and Proviso West.

York won 44-36 against Hinsdale Central and also recorded a 63-35 conference win against Proviso West.

In the Hinsdale win, York led 14-5 after the first quarter and 22-12 at halftime. Hinsdale outscored York 14-7 in the third quarter, but York outscored the Red Devils 15-10 in the fourth.

Against Proviso, York led 12-9 af-

ter the first quarter and 30-19 at halftime. The Dukes outscored Proviso 18-4 in the third quarter and 15-12 in the fourth quarter.

The two wins moved York to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in WSC Silver play.

In earlier action, the Dukes dropped a 60-58 WSC Silver game to Oak Park-River Forest.

York trailed 16-12 after the first quarter and 29-21 at halftime. York outscored OPRF 25-14 in the third quarter to take a 46-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Huskies held a 17-12 advantage in the final eight minutes to pull out the win.

Danielle Dennis led the Dukes with 17 points. She had one 3-pointer and made eight free throws. Matty Stark and Caylin Rufus each had 14 points.

Stark hit two 3-pointers in the second half. York had five 3-pointers in the game.

York played St. Viator in a non-conference game earlier this week and will play Maine South in Park Ridge tonight in another non-conference game before heading to LaGrange to face Lyons Township Saturday in a WSC Silver game.

Angelo Martucci led the Dukes with 14 points. Erik Cohn added 13 points, while Sam Wlash had 11 points and Nick Kosich finished with nine points. Walsh also had five rebounds. Cohn made three 3-pointers and Nate Shockey had five steals.

Coal mining has a deep history in southern Illinois

Louis Joliet and Pere Marquette, returning from an expedition on the Mississippi River in 1673, were the first explorers to notice the combustible material that would shape the Illinois economy. The coal just sat there on the surface like low-hanging fruit near Utica along the Illinois River.

The first mine appeared near Peoria not long after, but it wasn’t until 1830, when coal from Belleville found a market in nearby St. Louis, that the industry took off, according to Keith Weil and Alvin K. Grandys, who wrote the 1976 Illinois Coal Digest, a publication from the Illinois Department of Business and Economic Development.

Coal grew by leaps and bounds over the decades. In the 1850s and 1860s, railroads opened lines to new customers and the Civil War. Later, Weil and Grandys write, the formalization of geology and the appearance of the steam engine made coal easier to find and dig.

The mines attracted tens of thousands of workers, many of whom were exposed to the dangers of an unchecked industry. As mine collapses and explosions claimed hundreds of lives, new vitality sprang into labor unions that went on to fight for

better safety and health care.

Early mine collapses, the result of apathetic owners, encouraged miners to organize but still produced few gains, according to Rosemary Feurer, a history professor at Northern Illinois University. Reforms went unenforced, and even a nascent form of workers’ compensation, the victory of a particularly deadly episode in Cherry, Ill., in the north-central part of the state in 1909, barely compensated widows from a legal judgment.

Every law “was written in blood,” said Bernie Harsey, president of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1825 in DuQuoin.

Harsey also fought for a better way

of life for miners. In 1993, management wanted to reduce health care benefits, so the union went on strike, and Harsey was out of work for six months. If the strike didn’t happen, he said, he didn’t think he would have health insurance coverage.

Harsey, who started in the coal industry in 1973, said he’s used between $2 million and $3 million in health insurance to cover his family for everything from cancer to a kidney transplant.

“We wouldn’t have that without our labor disputes,” he said.

Health care was one of the items that miners fought hardest for, and in 1946, John Lewis, the leader of the

United Mine Workers of America, negotiated legislation that secured cradle-to-grave health care coverage for its members that was guaranteed by the federal government.

Recently, that compromise came under threat when Peabody Energy filed for bankruptcy in 2016, the latest in a series of coal companies to fail. After a temporary stopgap that saved health insurance for 22,600 retired miners, their widows and children, Congress finally saved the deal in April 2017.

Today, the “Promise of 1946,” a term the Krug-Lewis Act acquired relatively recently, seems sacrosanct, but miners at the time wouldn’t have seen it that way, Feurer said.

Throughout Lewis’s tenure, the UMWA grew closer to management, and the organization became more bureaucratic. Inspired by these trends, a more rebellious wave of labor action in the 1960s won the Federal Mining Safety Legislation of 1974, an improvement to narrower and weaker bills passed in 1951 and 1969.

For as much as miners sacrificed for their benefits, others who weren’t covered sometimes sacrificed just as much, as companies pit workers against themselves by bringing in different ethnic groups to undercut wages of more established groups.

The 1922 Herrin Massacre stands out as the one of the most violent episodes of labor violence in which union members shot and killed 19 strikebreakers.

The first people to mine in Illinois were slaves, Feurer said. Other early groups to settle the area were English, Scots-Irish and Irish, people who’d struck out with the poor soils of Appalachia, according to David Conrad, a history professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

From 1890 to the early 1920s, east-

ern and southern Europeans settled the area next. After the Civil War, African-Americans came north only to find that “southern Illinois was not greatly different,” Conrad wrote in “Tell Me A Story: Memories of Early Life Around the Coal Fields of Illinois.”

As evidence of coal’s importance to the economy and culture of Southern Illinois in particular, the first mining union, the American Miners’ Association, began in West Belleville in 1861.

Since then, Illinois has produced many generations of miners, and today, as a lack of opportunities clamps down on the region, it ensures that only an eager, if smaller, generation will continue the dangerous work.

Only, they won’t belong to the UMWA anymore, Harsey said. Not a single member works in any mine in southern Illinois.

About 98 percent of workers who belong to the Local 1825 are retired now. The other 2 percent, about 10 people, are waiting for work on the inactive list. It’s been this way since 1997, when the mine reached the end of its property and there was nothing more to dig.

“We knew the day was coming,” Harsey said. “You just get on with life.”

The future of coal mining in Illinois is bleak for workers, and although many believe the industry’s freefall began only recently, it peaked in the 1920s, and has been declining since, Conrad said.

In 1930, a whopping 185 coal mines employed 51,200 people who produced 52 million tons of coal. By 2015, just 19 mines employing 3,600 people produced 55 million tons of coal, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

While coal production varies from year to year, the number of workers has declined steadily. Technology and natural gas, the two biggest culprits for the industry’s current decline, were blamed 100 years ago, too, as trains became more efficient and other fuels found new markets.

After Harsey’s mine shut down, many workers were let go, but some stayed on for the next five years to work on land reclamation. Harsey worked with the operating engineers’ Local 5 for 10 more years.

“For me, only working (seven or eight) months out of the year, I was more fortunate than the others,” he said.

Local 1825 may be out of work, but it still celebrates the history of Illinois coal mining. Every year on April 1, it gets together to celebrate the victory of an 8-hour workday. In 2017, about 175 people showed up.

“We had a good turnout,” he said.

The member agencies of the Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium (NIPHC) would like to advise residents that seasonal flu activity has increased sharply in recent weeks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that influenza-like-illness activity is widespread across most of the country, including Illinois.

CDC’s latest surveillance data shows current ILI activity is similar to what was seen during the peak of the 2014-2015 season; the most severe in recent years.

Seasonal influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory virus that can cause mild to severe illness. Symptoms of the flu virus include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. Flu is spread primarily when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Conroy bill protecting residents with pre-existing conditions signed into law

“The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated,” said Dr. Terry Mason, NIPHC President and Chief Operating Officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health. “We know the best way to protect yourself and your family from getting sick is by getting the flu shot. The vaccine prevents millions of illnesses and tens of thousands of hospitalizations every year, and can lessen the severity of symptoms.”

In addition to getting the flu shot, follow these simple steps to help prevent the spread of the flu: • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

• If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

Legislation that would protect insurance coverage for the thousands of Illinois patients with pre-existing conditions sponsored by state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, became law on Jan. 1.

“I have been fighting to protect Illinois residents from unscrupulous insurance companies and ensure that every Illinoisan has access to affordable healthcare,” said Conroy. “This new law to protect coverage for Illinoisans with pre-existing conditions is a victory against the extreme agendas of Washington politicians that threaten to jeopardize the health of so many in our community. This state level protection will guarantee that insurance companies will not determine whether or not working families and residents are allowed access to affordable healthcare because of a pre-existing condition.”

House Bill 2959 prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage on the basis of a pre-existing condition. This legislation was passed in response to threats by Congress to repeal the protections and provisions put in place by the Affordable Care Act. The bill was passed with bipartisan support.

“The passing of this legislation ensures that those who need access to affordable healthcare the most will not be denied,” said Conroy. “The bipartisan support of this legislation shows our constituents that legislators are serious about taking on the problems of our health care system regardless of what happens in Washington.”

Slices of life

Football is a big deal at my house. I live with a bunch of guys who love the game. My daughter married a guy who loves the game. It only makes sense I’d be pulled into the gridiron mix.

As such, I’ve contemplated certain intricacies about the game. Not the rules or playing strategies or scoring methods, but the really important stuff.

For instance: why is it called football?

The ball doesn’t look anything like a foot. Maybe a large, rounded pointy toe – if your creativity allows you such a transmutation, but certainly not a whole foot.

The technical name for a football’s shape (I did the Google) is a prolate spheroid, which is the shape of a pig’s bladder, which is what the first footballs were made from. That’s why they call it a pigskin. (No pigs were harmed or injured during this NFL season. Now the balls are made of leather.)

The game itself involves mostly throwing, catching and carrying the ball – in one’s hands. Except for the kicker, no one uses his feet for anything other than running and that’s hardly a reason to name an entire game after the foot.

The playing field is measured in yards, and a yard is technically three feet, but you never hear the announcer say third down and 12 feet to go.

They’d say third and four – as in yards.

In other countries, our American soccer is called football, which makes

more sense because soccer (or football depending on where you live) predominately involves kicking the ball – with one’s feet.

There’s probably not a logical explanation for the name. Some things you just have to take at face value. Football is football – unless, of course, it is soccer.

To some, the misnomered sport becomes bigger than just a game. And not just for the guys I live with. It mimics life. The parallels are practically endless.

In life – and football – sometimes you are on the offense, sometimes on defense. You have to be competent in both and know which one to play and when.

In both, success is most often a result of teamwork. There is no “I” in football. I can’t say the same for life so I guess my clever analogy stops there.

Players and people spend quality and quantity time trying to reach goals or goal posts all in search of the big “W” because winning is the objective

of football, life and just about anything else worth playing.

Football and life are serious business, not to be taken lightly. But a little levity along the way often enhances the heavier moments. At least it makes them more bearable. This is exactly why the coffee break and timeout commercials were invented. Dilly dilly.

We all have to tackle life’s obstacles and try to run with an idea whenever we perceive a gap in the defense. An occasional fumble is inevitable for just about everyone. You don’t want to go off sides or leave anything incomplete.

Sometimes we have no alternative but to dive head first into a pile of formidable opponents to push forward past the goal line to win the prize.

I haven’t always been a football aficionado, nor did I recognize the many relevant and significant ways the game impacts my life. It started a few years ago with a friendly family fantasy football competition. The first two years I came in dead last. This year I won. I guess some of my well-honed football knowledge is useful after all. That’s a touchdown by any stretch of the pigskin.

Chins, necks, aging, getting checked out I recently posted a photo of me on Facebook, a side view of my face, sitting and smiling at an event. I made the comment, intending to be funny, that my neck and chin are now becoming one entity and I have no name for it.

The merging of my butt and legs I’ve deemed the bleg. For chin and neck melting together, I asked for suggestions for a good word for that.

A few people rode my humor, but then all the comments started to come in to tell me how beautiful I still am.

Why, thank you very much for sure, but the post was a silly about the signs of aging. My chin does not have the same line of distinction it did when I was a decade younger. I was not looking for compliments or reassurance. I was not complaining, I was hoping for laughs.

I’m okay with the loose flesh under my chin. Tis life. I am happy (over the moon joyful) to be this age, saggy neck and all. Yet the ladies chimed in to tell me I’m “still beautiful.”

Not too long ago I was rushing through the grocery store and as I

zipped up and down the aisles, I noticed not one, but two, different gents in my general age demographic give me a second look. I smiled to myself, “I’ve still got it! And sorry fellas, I’m taken.”

Then I saw my reflection as I was leaving the store and realized my sunglasses pushed back on top of my head had created a tall six-inch high floppy mohawk kind of thing with my hair.

Yeah, I got a second look alright. They were wondering what kind of flippity flappity featherish thing had landed on my head. I looked kind of like an odd kewpie doll/troll mashup. Yes, I’ve still got it! Absolutely!

Physical beauty is such a subjective and interesting phenomena. We all

know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My husband, my beholder, compliments me all the time. And not just on my looks. As much as I want my Prince Charming to like my outer, I want him to appreciate more the inner me. And he does.

I tell him the same. I love his physical outer shell. I think he is handsome/ gorgeous/so dang cute. And even more, I like the amazing man that he is. I think all happy couples are like that. We love the outer package of our mate for sure, and we are deeply devoted to the prize inside.

Perhaps the tide is turning in society, yet it seems that no matter what we say about girl power/women’s movement/ etc., we still tend to care about our looks, perhaps a little too much. Yes, I care about my physical appearance. I want to look nice. And yet I if I gave a speech and asked how it went, and the response was, “Well, you looked pretty,” I wouldn’t be flattered.

Anyway, the post about neck/chin did circle back to comments of smiley faces and LOLs. When I re-read, I saw it was my fault that the tide had turned to reassurance because I started it by saying, “Sigh. My chin and my neck…” If I had omitted the sigh, the lovely friends probably would not have felt obliged to give comfort instead of humor.

I was just trying to keep it light. And keep our chins up. (And FYI, we think “check” is a good term for the chin/ neck coming together.)

McSweeney—an outspoken critic of the governor despite sharing party affiliation—says, bare minimum, a few things have to be accomplished in the upcoming session: Rauner and lawmakers have to determine a way to pay for $2.8 billion in unappropriated spending from last fiscal year. And they need to drastically reduce overall spending so a balanced

budget can be passed for the next fiscal year.

The spending cuts must come through meaningful pension reform, Medicaid reform and other reductions.

Doing nothing is not an option.

“We don’t deserve to get paid if we don’t pass a balanced budget and cut spending,” McSweeney said.

Lawmakers are paid a base salary of $67,800 annually plus benefits for what already is part-time work. The state’s median household income was just under $60,000 in 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

I agree with McSweeney.

Lawmakers need to do their jobs this year or not get paid. And then voters should fire them.

Elmhurst Art Museum proudly announces its upcoming exhibition Gertrude Abercrombie: Portrait of the Artist as a Landscape organized

by Jenny Gibbs and coordinated at the museum by Lal Bahcecioglu. Featuring works from Chicago painter Abercrombie, who frequently hosted and played with acclaimed jazz musicians in her home, the show will be on view Jan. 20 – Mar. 4. Following its presentation at EAM, the exhibition will travel to the Illinois State Museum, Springfield where it will appear from Mar. 23 - June 15.

About the artist Gertrude Abercrombie (19091977) was a painter based in Chicago who created surreal and dreamlike imagery. She developed her own unique style and color palette, and explained the images of her work with “It is always myself that I paint.” The exhibition will include 40 of the artist’s enigmatic paintings

of spare interiors and illusionary landscapes—which have been referred to as “psychic self-portraits.”

Idiosyncratic, charming and irascible, Gertrude was presciently contemporary. Referred to as “the queen of the bohemian artists,” Abercrombie entertained many jazz musicians at her home at parties on Saturday evenings and jam sessions on Sunday afternoons, including friends Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins.

Like the jazz musicians with whom she was friends, she established a repertoire of themes upon which she riffed for decades. Cats, clouds, ostrich eggs, doors, lightning bolts, rocks and sea shells set in airless landscapes and spare interiors became a shorthand with which she chronicled her recurring dreams, fears and obsessions. Her works are spare and syncopated—“off the beam” as Gertrude would say.

The exhibition includes works from the collections of Laura and Gary Maurer, the Illinois State Museum and Elmhurst College.
