Pantry Princesses help community

The Elmhurst Princesses dad-daughter organization recently volunteered at the less than a two-hour timeframe. Elmhurst Princesses, open to daughters in grades Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry. The girls dropped off food donations and helped K-5 and their dads, has more than 500 members and promotes strong bonds beweigh, sort and put donated items on the shelves. Morley delivers the goods in State Of Our City address Announces contract has been signed for Centre for Performing Arts

“No matter who you are or where you are, you live your life locally.”

That is a quote from Ken Bartels, who welcomed a group of about 100 business and community leaders to Community Bank of Elmhurst for the annual Mayor’s State Of Our City Address on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Hosted by the bank, it is the first event of the year for the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI).

While Bartels has officially stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, he will continue his reign through the upcoming 100th Anniversary Awards Gala on Friday, Jan. 25. The new Chamber Board Chair is Kevin Kost, who also spoke before Mayor Steve Morley took the podium.

“Thanks to Ken Bartels for leading us through the 100th year,” Kost said.

“It will be a tough task to fill his shoes, but I have pretty big feet!”

Richard Reichert, president of Community Bank of Elmhurst, addressed the crowd touting the recent successes and celebrations at the bank, which recently bid adieu to co-founder and long-time Chairman of the Board Bill Gooch who retired. Reichert talked about the bank’s 25th year milestone in 2018 and the new Prairie Garden just south of the bank, which was dedicated to long-time community leader Darrell Whistler, who served on the bank’s Board among numerous other endeavors.

Reichert announced that the bank would soon be opening a business center for its customers right off the Community Room on the 2nd floor.

“We want it to serve as a home away from home,” he said. “It will be a co-working space as well as a conference room. It will be available for customers only.”

Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley delivered his State Of Our City address on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Community Bank of Elmhurst, sponsored by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

He also announced that Elmhurst College would be holding a half-day conference on March 1 focusing on the “ABCs of Generations Y & Z,” how to understand those demographics and their differences. More details to follow.

State of the Chamber Before the Mayor spoke, John R. Quigley, president & CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI), offered a “State of the Chamber” report. Quigley has been busy preparing and guiding every step of the way for the Chamber’s 100th Anniversary Centennial Celebration.

He urged people to purchase tickets to the Gala and for the Split The Pot raffle. All fundraising goals for the Centennial year have been met or exceeded. Quigley also mentioned the new Elmhurst-Opoly game, half of which are already sold.

Quigley mentioned the Chamber was moving to a new tiered dues system rather than the employee-based membership program it has had up until now. He said membership had grown in 13 of the last 14 months, despite often being short-handed at the office.

The Mayor’s address begins Mayor Morley first expressed gratitude to all those who make the City work, including the elected officials, full-time staff, part-time staff and volunteers at the City, the Elmhurst History Museum and the Elmhurst Public Library.

“There are more than 650 people who make this town what it is,” Morley said.

He said the City could not move forward without them and without having a plan.

“If you don’t have a plan, you’ll never get to where you want to be,” he said. “We have done a lot of planning.”

The City’s Triple A Bond rating, key to issuing bonds at the lowest rate possible, has helped the City re-finance debt, include its General Obligation (G.O.) Bonds. The effort has saved the taxpayers more than $4.5 million in five years.

“The City’s ‘checking account’ typically has $12- to $16-million and, as of January 1st, we have $18.7 million, which is $500,000 more than last

year,” Morley said. “Also the ‘rainy day fund’ is fully funded with $1 million at this time – at one time, it was down to $42,000.”

Taxes have remained palatable, mostly thanks to all the new development.

“Over the last five years, we’ve reduced taxes by $1.5 million over a three-year period,” the mayor said.

“We raised $300,000 the next year and this year, there was no increase in taxes. We still have sizeable pension obligations, but investments and sales tax [are] our income to cover them, but it’s tough.”

Morley also noted that home values have increased more than 32% over the past three years.

“Since we’re Triple A rated and we’re a home rule community, it allows us to do more of what we want to do,” he said. “There are two ways to raise funds: increase taxes on the base or grow the base. As a business-friendly community, we have been able to grow our base. To put that into dollars, the total investment over the past year has been $195 million and $700 million over the past five years.”

Business friendly indeed Morley mentioned the newer businesses, companies and stores that have moved into Elmhurst such as @ home, Elmhurst Brewing Company, the City’s first-ever brewery, a new UPS store, the new BMW dealership and Christopher Glass in the north industrial park, which boasts a 50-foot glass globe that used to sit in front of Willis Tower (the former Sears tower) in downtown Chicago.

“The owner [of Christopher Glass] purchased the globe for a $1, then spent $400,000 to move it to Elmhurst,” Morley said. “It was originally made for $1 million. It’s worth it to drive by and check it out.”

Development drives downtown Fitness Formula Club (FFC) has now opened in downtown Elmhurst.

Morley said according to FFC company officials, a study was done of what Elmhurst would look like in the future.

They felt that Elmhurst had “enough of a downtown” to have two main thoroughfares and therefore, was deemed an ideal spot to build one of their facilities. FFC expects to bring 800-1000 unique visits every day.

“York Theatre has always remained a big draw to our City,” Morley said, giving a shout-out to owner Willis Johnson. “Even in tough times, Willis Johnson has drawn hundreds of thousands of new unique visits to the City.”

The mayor also mentioned the many residential structures going up in the City such as “The Mark,” meaning the Opus Development, the Condos on the Hill, and the project at 2nd & Addison.

“These things are required to keep our downtown vibrant, they are also good for other taxing bodies,” Morley said. “All these units are paying property taxes, but are usually not adding a burden to the schools.”

He assured that keeping an eye on commercial real estate development and new growth initiatives, the City is becoming known as being business-friendly, which attracts developers.

Morley said the Phase I Engineering for rebuilding the Metra Station has

been completed.

“The project is estimated to cost $18 million, but thanks to City staff, we have secured outside funding of $16 million,” Morley said. “If we built it today, we’d only have to fund $1.6 million of an $18 million project.

“But we need a good Metra station, the one we have has that ‘Russian industrial feel,’ so we need to change that. Elmhurst is the busiest stop along the line.”

Public Works Dept. manages its full plate Morley talked about projects and activities of the Department of Public Works, including: • Installing new water meters and use of WaterSmart software technology, which can identify leaks.

• Sandblasting and repainting all fire hydrants.

• Two additional storm water management projects, one behind Messiah Lutheran Church; another behind Christ United Church, which will handle 112 acre-feet or 36.4 million gallons of water.

• Storm line cleaning has removed 300 cubic yards of debris over a threeyear period.

News from the Elmhurst Police Department • Narcan®, which stops a heroin overdose, saved five lives in Elmhurst this past year.

• The Annie LeGere Law, spawned in Elmhurst following a young lady’s untimely tragic death, was signed in Springfield. Just 17 days later, the Elmhurst Police Department became the first in the state to equip officers with Epi-Pens.

• The Drug Take-Back drop box has been highly successful.

• The license plate reader system, used in 26 incidents, resulted in 19 felony arrests in one year. “[License plate readers] are not being used to invade anyone’s privacy,” Morley assured, “but you should know, if you’ve been in your car 20 minutes, you’ve been photographed at least five times.

“Chief Ruth assured me those felony arrests would not have been solved without that system.”

Accomplishments at the Elmhurst History Museum: • Attendance has increased by 62%.

The Snoopy exhibit alone drew 6500 visitors.

• A new Curator of Exhibits has been hired.

• Outstanding public programs presented by the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation have included the Craft Beer Fest, which drew 600 attendees and raised more than $35,000.

• Coming in 2019: The Worlds of Wonder exhibition, more quarry tours and a dramatic re-enactment of the Lincoln-Douglas debate.

ECPA announcement Morley concluded with the announcement that the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts has signed a contract for a location – he stopped short of telling what that location might be.

Born in Springfield, Davis attended the University of Illinois, earning a BS in General Engineering and his JD at the College of Law, where he served on the Law Review and was admitted to the Order of the Coif. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

After moving to Chicago, he joined the law firm of Chadwell & Kayser, where he was a partner and head of the Litigation Group, un-

Involved with many legal issues and matters, in 2010, he was appointed Chair of the Full Hearing Board of the ARDC (Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission of the Illinois Supreme Court). For his long history of dedicated service in the Illinois Bar Association, he was recognized by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin as a “Leading Lawyer” in Illinois in the fields of commercial litigation and computer and technology law.

From 1992-2012, he taught Negotiations as an adjunct professor at the Chicago-Kent College of Law, receiving accolades from the student reviews and faculty alike.

A resident of Oak Brook since 1986, he unselfishly volunteered his time, effort, and expertise. The past eight years, he served as the vil-

nized as the Ambassador of the Year for a record-tying third time (1991 and 1998). Hanisch joins realtor Thomas Myers Sr. (1995, 2001 and 2014) and John Zawaski (1996, 2000 and 2013) of Dependable Business Forms as the only three-time Ambassador of the Year recipients.

Lori Murray, Vice President and Regional Manager at Inland Bank, will receive the Chairman’s Award.

Murray, who was first appointed to the Board in 2016 to fill a vacancy and then elected to her first threeyear term last fall, served on the Executive Committee as Second Vice Chair and chaired the Membership Committee in 2018.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage

Jan. 4 A victim in the 500 block of N. Oaklawn told police at around 12:41 p.m. that he was visiting his mother’s house when his sister became erratic. When he returned home, he observed a long scratch on the passenger side of his vehicle.

Dec. 24-Jan. 1 A victim told police that her vehicle was in her parking lot at 300 block Kimbell when she left for vacation. When she returned, she found the front windshield cracked and the front driver’s side window completely shattered out.

There was nothing missing from inside the vehicle.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Jan. 8 A 34-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of Virginia at around 10:27 p.m. Police said it was determined the suspect pushed the victim down the stairs of the apartment complex.

Jan. 7 A 33-year-old Wood Dale woman was charged with domestic battery at a clinic in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 5:56 p.m.

Police said that after the suspect completing a doctor’s visit she became agitated and angry. The complainant and suspect ensued in a verbal argument in the lobby of the clinic. The suspect then struck the victim in the shoulder and face.

A victim told police that her son was not getting up for school and had pushed her into a dresser. The suspect related that his mother attempted to get him out of bed by throwing water on him. The suspect pushed her out of his way and left the residence on foot. Officers located the suspect; he was transported to his school where he was released to a school resource officer.

Jan. 6 Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic in the 100 block of Elm at around 6:05 p.m. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the suspect who stated her brother (the victim) pushed her down the back stairs. The suspect was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident. According to police, the victim related the suspect was intoxicated and jumped on his back. Due to conflicting statements and no visible signs of injuries, no arrests were made.

Jan. 9 Marcos Gonzalez-Arias, 33, of Summit, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol and failure to yield subsequent to a traffic stop near York and St. Charles at around 11:49 p.m.

Jan. 5 Police said that subsequent to traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 12:27 a.m., it was discovered that Karen Stephenson, 53, of Gilberts, had been involved in a recent traffic crash, struck the traffic light at St. Charles and Spring roads, and fled the scene.

Stephenson was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, injury to city property, improper lane usage and no insurance.

Jan. 4 Eric Hodurek, 18, of Lemont, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Frontage at around 12:09 a.m.

Jan. 5 Police said officers responded to the report of harassing phone calls in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 8:14 a.m. According to police, a complainant received a call from an unknown person, who made a threatening statement. The complainant was unable to identify the unknown person.

Jan. 5 Quinn Billingslea, 31, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Clinton at around 3:15 a.m.

Cohen said there are 168 band and orchestra sixth-grade students in the district during the current school year.

Additionally, world language is now an option, not a requirement, for students entering middle school.

Henderson said over half of the district’s middle school students are opting not to have a world language experience. According to Henderson, about one third of the district’s sixth-graders are currently enrolled in accelerated language classes in either Spanish or French.

Referring to changes upcoming in the 2019-20 school year, Henderson and Cohen stated that band, orchestra and choir will take place during the school day in grades six, seven and eight. One more change in the next school year will be the option for seventh-graders to opt in to pre-algebra classes.

Congressman Raja votes to ensure working families receive their tax refunds without delay Last night, Congressman Krishnamoorthi joined his colleagues in passing the FY 2019 Department of the Treasury and IRS appropriations bill to ensure Illinois families will receive their tax refunds on time and in full.

Due to the partial government shutdown, only 12% of IRS employees are currently on the job, meaning that thousands of families’ tax returns are vulnerable to delays and administrative error.

Last year, more than 5 million Illinoisans received tax refunds totaling almost $14 billion, an average refund of $2,900 per filing.

“I voted to reopen the US Treasury Department and to ensure that Illinois’ working families receive the tax returns they’re owed, on time and in full,” said Congress-

man Raja Krishnamoorthi. “Each year, millions of families across Illinois pay their taxes on time, secure in the knowledge they’ll receive their full refunds promptly. But this year, President Trump has endangered the financial wellbeing of those families through his decision to shut down the government and furlough the vast majority of the IRS workforce responsible for processing those refunds.

I used to worry. About a lot of things.

I used to worry about what other people had and what I didn’t and then I realized I didn’t use or need half of what I had anyway and life went on.

I used to worry about impressing people and then I came to understand that it isn’t what others think of me, but what I think of myself.

I used to worry about acquiring more things. Now I worry about how I’m going to get rid of things and live with less clutter and more clarity.

I used to worry about expressing my viewpoints and opinions because they might not line up with someone else’s and that would cause discord. Then I learned to live with a little discord

I used to worry about the future and then the future became the now and I came to understand that everything unfolds at its own pace with its own plan and ruminating about it isn’t going to change anything. It is only going to change me – in a negative way by stealing time and energy that is better spent in other ways to help life move forward.

I used to worry about bad things happening and then I learned to count the things I am grateful for and I found I always have more gratitude than bad possibilities, so it’s easier, actually, to be grateful than to worry.

or achieve. We can’t find them in another person, experience or inanimate object. They are choices inside each of us. They aren’t bestowed upon us; we bestow them upon ourselves.

I used to worry that others were smarter than me, richer than me, better looking than me, faster than me, more hip than me and all things better than me and I realized that even if this were true, which it probably is, that it was okay because my life is my life and I’m pretty used to it the way it is and being smarter, brighter, richer or better looking isn’t all that important anyway. I’ve got what I need.

I used to worry about writing this column every week. What if the words dried up at some point?

Now I realize there will be a day when the words are absent and it will be time to move on to other things and that will be okay. For now, I’m thankful that I still have things to say.

I used to worry about worrying and that maybe I worried too much and I decided it was probably true, but the only remedy was to stop myself in my own tracks. So I did, finally, and life went on, as usual.

History Museum’s new exhibit explores love through wedding gowns, vintage valentines ‘Heart’s Desire: Reflections on Love & Marriage’ opens Jan. 18

Long before dating apps changed the way people meet and fall in love, American modes of courting, communicating love and affection, and eventually tying the knot have been steeped in romantic gestures and traditions passed down through generations. Although technology has evolved and styles have changed over the years, many of these symbols and traditions remain constant: wedding gowns, veils, flowers, cakes, and invitations are still part of modern weddings. Even in the digital age, valentines continue to be that ubiquitous annual symbol that is delivered with roses, chocolates, and candy hearts.

What is it about these outward expressions of love and affection that continues to draw couples together and eventually say “I do?” The Elmhurst History Museum presents a new exhibit that explores this theme through 19th and 20th-century matrimonial styles and exquisitely-detailed vintage valentines spanning 100 years. “Heart’s Desire: Reflections on Love & Marriage” is open from Jan. 18 through March 17 at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. Wedding gowns, photos of local brides To create the “Heart’s Desire” exhibit, the Elmhurst History Museum staff tapped into its own collection to select six special wedding gowns that have never been exhibited before. Along with an additional loaned wedding dress, the collection of seven gowns date from 1892 to the 1970s, and all the dresses and brides have connections to Elmhurst. One of the key factors in the selection process was that the Museum also had a photo of the bride wearing the dress on their wedding day.

“We wanted to showcase some of the real treasures of our collection, and these wedding gowns tell a very meaningful story,” said Dan Bartlett, exhibits curator and the designer of this exhibition. “Weddings are one of the most significant events in a person’s lifetime, and the thought and detail that goes into how people celebrate this occasion says a lot about who they are and the times in which they lived. “Environmental factors such as light and air quality can damage wedding gowns over time,” he said.

“We saw this exhibit as an opportunity to bring these beautiful dresses out of storage for a short-run exhibit, and also to tell the stories of the brides who wore them through their wedding photos.

By presenting a photo of the bride alongside the gown, we can add historical context and meaning. The dresses vary from ornate to simple designs, but collectively they tell a story of how bridal fashion has both changed and stayed the same over time.”

‘Will U Be Mine?’ Decades of Valentines Due to the exhibit’s timing, the Elmhurst History Museum is adding valentines from its collection and other sources that span more than 100 years of sharing love and affection on Valentine’s Day. From elaborately-detailed Victorian Valentines to vintage 1950’s cards, the exhibit depicts how Valentine’s Day messages evolved from a religious feast day to the more commercialized holiday as we know it today. A few examples of “vinegar valentines,” a cynical and snarky style of valentine greeting that was popular in the 1850s-1940s, will also be on display. In addition to valentines, other subjects such as the language of flowers will be explored and local florists and bakeries that made wedding cakes will also be remembered.

Special interactive features Additional interactive features in the “Heart’s Desire: Reflections on Love & Marriage” exhibit will include a three-dimensional giant-sized valentine where guests can step inside for a photo opportunity in the gallery. A Community Wedding Photo Wall will also be available for visitors to share nonreturnable copies of their own wedding photos to leave behind in the exhibit.

Elmhurst Children’s Theatre presents ‘Shrek The Musical’ “Once upon a time, there was formed under the direction of Helen Knudsen with Music Director Melaa little ogre named Shrek....”

And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue.

Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand... and his name is Shrek.

Elmhurst Children’s Theatre has announced its plans to perform Shrek The Musical, a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure that is fun for the whole family.

Sandburg Middle School eighth-grader, Aidan Costanzo, plays Shrek.

“Shrek is a fabulous musical, he said. “It is a great fantasy story with many characters that are so much fun to play. At the heart of the story, it has a great message of tolerance and self-acceptance. Who doesn’t want to play a big ugly ogre who wins the day?”

Oliver Roy, also a Sandburg 8th grader, plays the role of Donkey.

“It’s been a lot of fun playing a character so different from me,” he said. Shrek is Oliver’s third ECT show.

Shrek is Luke Hanley’s 8th ECT production. A Bryan Middle School eighth-grader, Luke has been involved with ECT since 5th grade.

“The Shrek show and ECT have taught me about inclusion, acceptance of one’s differences and how to have fun,” he said. “I feel I am at my happiest with my ECT family.”

Daniel Conlon, bishop of the Joliet Diocese, will present “Did Jesus Really Intend to Establish a Church?” on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m., when he gives this year’s Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Lecture at Elmhurst College. It will be held in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

York girls basketball team defeats Hinsdale Central Sophomore Molis scores career-high 18 points

After a tough stretch of games against top-notch competition, the York girls basketball team got back to familiar winning ways.

The Dukes outscored Hinsdale Central 43-14 in the second half to record a 75-42 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win.

York led only 32-28 at halftime.

Sophomore Sydney Molis had a career-high 18 points, including 13 in the second half. She made two 3-pointers. Carly Schwartz added 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. Sophomore Kaitlyn Kjome added 13 points, including one 3-pointer. Kathleen Levins had nine points and Megan Juneman, a sophomore, added eight points to complete a well-rounded scoring effort.

“We just got done with a tough stretch,” said York coach Brandon Collings. “We had a nice Christmas tournament. We had Geneva down and couldn’t finish it out. We ended up winning the consolation champi-

onship at Montini.”

The Dukes then dropped a sixpoint WSC Silver game to Downers Grove North and also lost a 44-41 league game to Glenbard West.

“We had Glenbard West down by seven most of the game and we couldn’t hold them off in the fourth and lost by three,” said Collings.

The Hinsdale Central win put York at 14-8 overall and 5-3 in WSC Silver play.

“We came out in the second half and defended,” said Collings. “We had steals and created turnovers and hit shots. We had been in a shooting rut. We put pressure on them offensively. We hit six 3s in the game.”

York won the game without leading scorer Sara Krissinger who was injured in a game against Maine South and missed the majority of that contest and the Hinsdale game.

“The girls picked her up and played well,” said Collings. “Sydney Molis had a career high, Kathleen Levins played really well. Megan Juneman is only a sophomore and played well.

Everybody played well together.

Sydney Fuglsang has been doing a great job at the point-guard position.

Everybody, overall, is getting better.

We’re still a team on any given night where we can have a different lead-

ing scorer. Sydney and Kaitlyn have been stepping up scoring for us lately. We’re getting a lot better and our sophomores are getting a lot better.”

York plays Lake Park tonight and then faces Proviso West in a conference game Saturday.

“We get another shot at Downers North at the end of the month,” said Collings.

Collings noted York will host a Class 4A regional next month.

“We had a rough nine-game stretch

recently,” he said. “I added up the records of our opponents during those games and it was something like 100 wins and 30 losses. We played Benet, Bolingbrook, Glenbard West, Downers Grove North and Geneva and those all were losses during that stretch. Those were tough games, but in quite a few of them we were playing well three of the four quarters.

It’s a young team that still is learning how to close out games. We just have to keep taking care of business and

continue to get better and improve so we make sure we are playing our best basketball by the regional.”

In the Glenbard West game, York led 9-8 after the first quarter and 2418 at halftime. York increased the lead to 34-27 after three, but the Hilltoppers outscored the Dukes 17-7 in the fourth.

Molis had 12, while Kjome scored 11 points. Krissinger had six points and shot 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Fuglsang had five points.

York student Isabella Cook excels in U.S. national soccer team program Senior will continue her academic and athletic careers at the University of Tennessee

Isabella Cook’s athletic journey started as it does for many other children.

“I was five years old and my parents signed me up for soccer,” she said.

Smart move by Cook’s parents.

More than a decade later, the York High School senior is excelling in the sport at the highest levels as a member of the U.S. national team program.

“As the years went on, I started to love soccer,” said Cook, who does not play on the York girls soccer team. “It was a hobby that became a passion.”

Cook started playing AYSO soccer locally and then moved on to the Team Elmhurst club from ages 8 to 14. She later moved to the Chicago Magic club before participating in her first national team camp. Cook’s

current club is Eclipse Select Illinois, which trains out of Oakbrook and Darien.

Cook has seen national team camp action ranging from age groups 17, 18, 19 and 20. National team camps are held throughout the country.

Cook noted she’s played in such camps in Kansas, Florida and California.

At the recent Nike International Friendlies in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, Cook had the U19 national team’s only goal in a 1-0 victory over China. She also played in the team’s 2-1 loss to France in Florida.

Another of her most recent national stints came in November when she headed to the Netherlands as part of the U19 women’s national team squad that went up against the Netherlands national team.

“I’m hoping to get to go to more places internationally,” said Cook.

Cook, a holding midfielder, explained the national camps consist of a week of training and then players are chosen from the camp to comprise a roster that plays against international competition.

“It’s been an incredible experience,” said Cook. “The environment

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team defeats St. Edward CORRESPONDENT

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team earned its first Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win of the year with a 54-50 victory in Elgin against St. Edward.

IC Catholic Prep trailed 13-5 after the first quarter and 26-20 at halftime, but the Knights outscored the Green Wave 19-9 in the third quarter and 14-13 in the fourth quarter to earn the road win.

Dom Gaudio had 17 points and hit 8 of 8 free-throw attempts. Chauncey Lee added 14 points, while Ryan Wojtalewicz had nine points. Mike Carpanzano had eight points. Carpanzano hit two 3-pointers, while Lee, Gaudio and Zach Jordan each had one 3-pointer. The Knights shot 15-for-16 from the free-throw line.

In other recent action, the Knights competed against Aurora Central Catholic. Wojtalewicz had 13 points, while Gaudio had 11 points and Lee finished with nine points. Gaudio hit two 3-pointers. Wojtalewicz had 12 rebounds, while Gaudio had eight rebounds and Lee had seven rebounds, two assists and four steals.

The Knights also lost 69-40 to Chicago St. Patrick in non-conference play and 62-40 to Bishop McNamara in Kankakee in a MSC Blue game.

Against St. Patrick, the Knights trailed 32-8 after the first quarter and 49-27 at halftime.

Lee had 10 points, while Gaudio

had nine points on three 3-pointers.

Carpanzano added seven points.

Lee’s 10 points came on a 10-for-12 effort from the free-throw line.

Knights coach TJ Tyrrell was pleased with how his team performed in the win in Elgin against St. Edward.

“We got off to a little slow start, but as a team we shot extremely well from the second quarter through the third quarter. I think we only missed two shots and they were end-of-quarter shots,” he said. “As a team since Christmas, we are doing a very good job of handling pressure. We’ve seen some type of press in our last several games and the guys are getting a ton of work against it. St. Edward is a very difficult place to play. It was nice to pull out the road win.”

Tyrrell gave high marks to Gaudio for his recent play. “Dom Gaudio is playing stronger the last few games,” he said. “He has more confidence.”

Lee continues to develop in his role as the team’s point guard. “Chauncey is really settling into his role as our point guard. He is creating opportunities for guys like Zach and Ryan.”

The Knights played some of the game against Bishop McNamara without Wojtalewicz, who was injured during the contest.

“He had to come out late in the game,” said Tyrrell. “We came out strong against them and had the lead at the end of the first quarter, but Chauncey and Mike Carpanzano each had two fouls and we had to

The Knights played Aurora Christian earlier this week in a MSC Blue Division game. “Aurora Christian is having an outstanding season,” said Tyrrell late last week. “They beat Riverside-Brookfield in overtime.

It’s an important game because they are in our sub-sectional and they are hosting our sectional, plus they are a new team in our conference and in our division, so we’ll see them twice.”

is amazing and the level of competition is outstanding. You get such a rush every time you step onto the field. This has opened a lot of new opportunities for me. The coaching staff is so great. They make me better as a player. Going to these camps as a younger person lets me learn so much from the game. I love it so much.”

Cook’s high level of play has opened the door to a Division I college career. She’s headed to Knoxville, Tennessee next fall to play on scholarship for the Lady Vols women’s soccer team.

“They are No. 9 in the country for soccer,” she pointed out. “I fell in love with all of it when I visited there. The coaches and the girls on the team all are great. It’s a great school academically as well. I visited there when I got back from the Netherlands. I love it, especially the coaching staff. A lot of the girls who are there are part of the national team program. They are from different age groups, but everybody there clicks. I love the facilities and how they treat their athletes. It’s so cool what they offer with all the training

options.”

Cook said she wants to study psychology there. “They have a really big psychology program,” she said.

When she reflects back on her already successful career, Cook admitted she couldn’t imagine being where she is today.

“When I was younger and playing, I had no clue about any of this,” she said. “When I started going to training, the coaches said I had a chance to go to the highest places. I get texts from other players I’ve trained with that say they knew I could go far. It’s beyond crazy to think, here I am.”

Cook said she has nothing scheduled in January for the national team program, but was told sometime in February things will ramp up again.

And when the term national team is mentioned, the subject of the Olympics isn’t too far behind.

“That’s one of my dreams,” she said. “I would like to play in the Olympics someday. My mom and I kind of have this thing that if I get into the Olympics I’m going to get the Olympic rings tattooed on me. It would be amazing to get to that level someday.”

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team wins three in a row Knights progressing after holiday break

Everyone involved with the IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team is happy with 2019 thus far.

The Knights came out of the holiday break with three wins in a row against Wheaton St. Francis, Aurora Rosary and Elgin St. Edward.

IC Catholic Prep downed St. Francis 52-44 in Wheaton in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game.

“Our press looked really good,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Kelsey James. “We forced a lot of turnovers.

Defensively, we had a really good second half. We kept their leading scorers down in the second half and forced others to be the ones scoring.”

Defense again was a key in the win against Rosary at home. “Our press again was very effective against them,” said James. “On offense we moved the ball around and everybody contributed.”

That balance was on display in the St. Edward game as well. “We played good defense against St. Edward and we had multiple scorers—I think we had three girls close to double digits.

It was a team effort.”

James said the recent winning streak is the result of her team believing in what it is doing. “They realize everything they are working on and everything we ask them to do are things they can do and things they want to do,” she said. “We’re seeing it all pay off. They are excited about these games and they are excited to go out there and work really hard.”

James said Jaida Smith continues to be a team leader, while Claire Wagner had 18 points and pulled in 16 rebounds in the win against St. Francis.

“Claire has been playing really well,” said James.

Sophomore Alia Johnson is another Knight who earned high marks from her coach. “Alia is contributing for us and getting about five steals a game in our press,” said James.

James said she made adjustments to the team’s press defense in recent times and that switch also has been a factor in the recent success. “We switched it up right before Christmas and figured out some of the kinks and what we weren’t getting out of it the first part of the season,” she said.

“Now the girls are seeing what their speed and length can do to teams.

They are figuring it out.”

IC Catholic Prep was 8-12 overall and 4-4 in MSC Blue play through late last week. The Knights played Addison Trail in a non-conference game earlier this week and will play Aurora Central Catholic tonight in a MSC Blue game and Chicago Christian in an MSC crossover game on Friday.

“The girls are really playing well these last few games,” said James.

“Hopefully it continues.”

Timothy Christian girls basketball team splits pair of conference games Schuringa hits for 26 against Chicago Christian

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team split a pair of recent Metro Suburban Conference Red Division games with Chicago Christian and Elmwood Park.

The Trojans lost 50-45 to Chicago Christian and downed Elmwood Park 5729. The game against Chicago Christian had potential conference-championship implications.

“Chicago Christian was a big game,” said Timothy Christian coach Mark Baumbach. “It basically was for first place.

We had a great effort that night, we just could not make enough baskets. It sounds simple. Hannah Schuringa had 26 points and then only one other girl was in double figures. Defensively, it was probably our worst effort of the year. We kind of gave

up everything. They hit 3s, were getting layups and were beating us on the boards.

It was rough.”

Timothy turned things around in the Elmwood Park game, jumping out to a 35-8 lead at halftime.

“Everybody played well,” said Baumbach. “The effort was there. The biggest difference in the game was our shots were falling. Our defense stepped up and we played a complete game, which was nice.”

Timothy moved to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in MSC Red play with the win against Elmwood Park. Both conference losses have come to Chicago Christian.

On the individual front, Baumbach had high praise for point guard Sureya Alex.

“Kudos to our point guard Sureya,” he said. “She has been unbelievable all year.

She makes our offense go. I think our transition game is one of the top transition games around. When we get a rebound, we are off and running and she finds the open player. Sureya probably could shoot a little more. She’s very unselfish. She’s the engine that drives us. She’s been fabulous all year. We have five girls who could lead us in scoring and Sureya knows who is hot and finds the right person at the right time.

She’s had an excellent year.”

In the Chicago Christian game, Schuringa shot 12-for-17 from the field on the way to her 26 points. She also hit a 3-pointer. Jordyn Strube added 10 points and Alex had seven points. Sarah Carstensen had four assists, while Greta Hoogstra had three assists. Carstensen had nine rebounds, while Strube had five rebounds.

Against Elmwood Park, Timothy charged out of the gates to the tune of a 26-point first quarter. Strube led the Trojans with 18 points, while Schuringa had 15 points, Alex had 10 points and Carstensen finished with nine points.

Schuringa shot 7-for-11 from the field.

Timothy also hit seven 3-pointers with Strube making three of them. Carstensen had two 3-pointers and Lauren Gehrke and Alex each had one 3-pointer.

Carstensen had three assists, while Schuringa had three blocked shots.

Schuringa finished with seven rebounds and Carstensen had six rebounds. Strube and Alex each had three steals.

Fenton played Westmont earlier this week in a non-conference game and then heads to Bensenville tonight to face Fenton in an MSC Red contest.
