ECPA names managing director, opens office space Shawna Roubitchek to lead project into the future

The Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA) has moved into the next phase of its growth and development by adding Shawna Roubitchek to their team as managing director.

The Board has also opened a permanent office space at 105 South York Street.

“The opening of the new ECPA office and the addition of such a talented person as Shawna … is the natural next step in the process of creating the Centre for Performing Arts,” said ECPA Board President Jeff Budgell.

Involved with ECPA since its inception, Roubitchek most recently served as co-Chair of the annual Spotlight Gala, ECPA’s largest fundraiser.

Roubitchek brings a wealth of experience in project management, hospitality and tourism, having Shawna worked at the Museum of Roubitchek Contemporary Art in Chicago, Hyatt Hotels, and the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau.

In her new role with ECPA, Roubitchek

will be overseeing its operations, managing the current fundraising and outreach programs, as well as looking for additional ways to spread awareness and gain support for the project.

“By Roubitchek handling these aspects of the business, it allows the ECPA board to concentrate on the upcoming capital campaign and naming rights needed to take ECPA to the next stage,” said Board member Laura Michaud.

Both professionally and personally, Roubitchek is passionate about expanding the visibility of the arts in the local community.

“I’m excited to be a part of such an incredi-

ble initiative,” she said. “In so many ways, the arts shape, change and, most importantly, enhance our lives. A performing arts center will be an impactful addition to our residents and those in the surrounding areas. For Elmhurst, to be the seat of something so wonderful... it’s quite rewarding on many levels.”

League to host Candidate Forum

The League of Women Voters of Elmhurst will host a Candidate Forum on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Elmhurst City Hall, 209 N. York St. Contested candidates for the March 17, 2020 General Primary Election have been invited.

After answering some League questions, the candidates will be asked to answer questions submitted in writing from those who are in attendance.

A new law sponsored by State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) will guarantee that all insured Illinois children will have access to lifesaving EpiPens.

“As a parent, I worry about my kids all the time,” said Conroy. “But no mom or dad should ever have to worry about being able to afford a device that could save their child’s life in the event of an emergency. That’s why I have fought to force insurance companies to put patients and chil-

dren with serious medical conditions above the interest of profits. The safety of our kids is what’s most important and commonsense legislation like this moves Illinois in the right direction.”

House Bill 3435, effective Jan. 1, 2020, requires healthcare policies in Illinois to cover epinephrine autoinjectors for patients under 18 years of age. Epinephrine autoinjectors are a life-saving drug used to temporarily treat severe asthma or allergy attacks, often buying patients vital time to get

Journal ranks Elmhurst library among top 7 in state For the third year in a row, Elmhurst Public Library received a five-star rating in a national ranking of Library Journal’s annual review of public libraries.

EPL earned five out of five stars, one of only seven libraries to earn that distinction in Illinois.

A total of 6,333 U.S. public libraries were rated nationwide and only 261 qualified as star libraries. In Illinois, 17 libraries received star ratings, but only seven earned the distinction of receiving a five-star rating: Naperville, Fountaindale, Northbrook, Wilmette, Lanark, Cook Memorial Public Library District, and Elmhurst.

“As food allergies become more common among our kids, Illinois law must evolve to better protect our kids’ health,” said Conroy. “Requiring health care providers to have EpiPen insurance coverage for minors is one step forward in guaranteeing affordable access to basic healthcare.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass Jan. 7 Christine Schacht, 69, of Addison, was issued citations for damage to city property, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle in the 1000 block of S. Euclid at around 4:27 p.m.

Jan. 4 A victim in the 100 block of N. Palmer told police at around 11:07 p.m. that an unknown suspect caused deep scratches to the rear passenger side door and rear quarter panel on her parked vehicle.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Jan. 4 A 45-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of E. Vallette at around 3:13 p.m. Upon police arrival, a victim stated that the suspect struck her and threw her to the floor. The victim had visible physical injuries.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Jan. 8 Joshua M. Feliciano, 18, of Berwyn, was issued citations for possession of alcohol by a minor and illegal window treatment, while Manuel A. Marin, 19, of Berwyn, was issue a citation for underage possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Maple and North at around 11:13 a.m.

Jan. 6 Michael S. Hollins, 29, of Chicago, was charged with DUI at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at around 4:26 a.m. Police said while a reporting officer was on patrol, the officer found Hollins asleep at the wheel in the parking lot. Hollins had an open bottle of Modelo® in the center in the center cup holder, according to police. Police said Hollins

Crime news Burglary attempted at two car dealerships

On Jan. 6, two instances of attempted burglary were reported at car dealerships—one in the 700 block of W. Lake at around 3:14 a.m., and the other in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 3:06 p.m.

Police said that while investigating

admitted to drinking at a friend’s house and thought he was in Chicago.

Jan. 5 William R. Valencia, 28, of Westmont, was charged with DUI, aggravated DUI, driving while license suspended, failure to signal and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Riverside at around 3:56 a.m.

Jan. 3 Jesus Cabera, 20, of Dolton, was issued citations for possession of open alcohol by a passenger in a vehicle and possession of adult-use cannabis by a passenger in a vehicle, subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Elizabeth at around 11:46 p.m.

Harassment, threats Jan. 8 A complainant in the 100 block of N. Willow told police at around 9 p.m. that she is a nanny for the suspect’s children. The suspect has not seen his children in months due to an active order of protection. The suspect reportedly texted the complainant several times communication of a disturbing matter. She was advised to block the suspect’s number. An officer left a voicemail asking for the suspect to contact him.

Jan. 4 A citizen reported witnessing a road rage incident near North and Wolf in Northlake at around 1:20 p.m. The witness reported the suspect displayed a handgun in the road rage incident. The suspect’s vehicle was located North and West Aves. The suspect and vehicle were searched but no handgun was located. The suspect was released at the scene.

Dec. 19 A victim in the 200 block of W. Brush Hill told police at around 5:23 p.m. that a former boyfriend was stalking her after she ended their relationship. The suspect had also sent text messages to the victim. The suspect was contacted and was advised to cease all contact and communications with the victim.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance Jan. 7 Police said officers responded to the report of a robbery in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 3:25 a.m., which was determined to be the solicitation of a prostitute. According to police, Ecstasy pills were located in the vehicle of David Williams, 34, of Chicago, who was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Shaquille V. Archibaldo, 26, of Warrenville, was found to have a valid warrant from the Rosemont Police Department, according to police, and also was

a burglary at a dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake, a reporting officer responded to a dealership in the 700 block of W. Lake and observed broken glass on a front service bay door. The interior of the building was cleared and it appeared nothing had been taken.

In the incident in the 500 block of W. Lake, police said while a re-

charged with solicitation of a sexual act. Jennifer M. Diaz, 22, of Chicago, was charged with prostitution.

Jan. 3 Jocelyn Villeda, 22, of Cicero, was issued citations for unlawful possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle by a passenger, subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Ardmore at around 9:32 p.m.

Jan. 2-Jan. 3 A complainant in the 400 block of N. York told police at that she located drug paraphernalia along with a white powdery substance in the former tenant’s room sometime between the above dates. The room is supposed to be unoccupied. The complainant believes the former tenant’s son was entering the room illegally. This case is pending investigation.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Jan. 8 Theft was reported in the 700 block of S. Euclid at around 3:20 p.m. A victim told police that while on a work site, his company set up a sewer camera, a monitor, and a portable generator. While the employees were occupied, an unknown suspect removed the equipment from the site.

Theft of a vehicle was reported at a rental car business in the 800 block of N. York at around 3:44 p.m. A complainant told police that the suspect rented a grey Ford Ecosport on Nov. 27 and has failed to return the vehicle.

Numerous attempts to contact the suspect and repossess the vehicle have been unsuccessful. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Dec. 15-Jan. 7 Theft was reported at a business in the 900 block of Riverside. A victim told police that his business stores a snowplow bucket in the northeast part of the storage lot. The victim checked on his property Jan. 7 and discovered the bucket had been stolen sometime between the above dates.

Dec. 29-Jan. 3 A reporting officer responded to the 400 block of W. Wrightwood for a delayed stolen vehicle report. Upon arrival, a complainant stated that the victim called him and asked him to check on a new Mercedes that he had bought. The complainant checked the area and was unable to locate the vehicle, which has been entered into LEADS as stolen. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 27-Jan. 3 Entering a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of S. Rex. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered her unlocked vehicle while it was parked in the driveway of the

porting officer was checking the building, broken glass on a door on the northeast corner and an opened service bay door were discovered. It did not appear that any vehicles were missing.

About the suspects The first suspect was described as a black male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, and also

residence sometime between the above dates.

The victim returned from vacation to find her glove box was opened and several pieces of paper were lying on the front passenger seat; however, nothing appeared to be missing.

Jan. 2 Theft was reported at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 4:46 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect described as a black female around 50 years old, wearing a gray jacket, a leopard print shirt and black pants removed her wallet from her shopping cart while she left it momentarily unattended in the produce department.

Oct. 31-Jan. 1 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of W. Fremont sometime between the above dates.

Dec. 10 A victim who had been incarcerated through Dec. 27 told police that when he arrived at his apartment on Dec. 27, he noticed his laptop, two baseball jerseys, eight pairs of gym shoes and an Armani® wristwatch were missing.

The victim did not give anyone permission to be in his apartment or remove anything from his apartment.

Nov. 22-Nov. 25 Forgery was reported in the 400 block of Lexington. Police said the complainants related that several times, they found the deceased victim’s vacant apartment unsecured between the above dates. They learned that a check was cashed from the victim’s account and the signature on the check did not belong to the victim. Investigation is pending.

April 5-Oct. 1, 2019 Mail fraud and identity theft were reported in the 800 block of N. York. A victim told police that the suspect filed a change of address form with the U.S. Post Office, which forwarded all the victim’s mail to the suspect’s residence. At this time, the victim has not suffered any financial loss.

Warrant arrest Jan. 7 Police said a reporting officer had knowledge that Christopher W. Wright, 53, of Elmhurst, had a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. A traffic stop was conducted near Addison and Third at around 4:43 p.m., and the warrant was confirmed, according to police.

Jan. 6 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and Albert at around 8:46 a.m., Sharon Holliday, 37, of Villa Park, was found to be driving while license suspended. Upon further investigation, Holliday was found to have two valid warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police. Holliday was charged with driving while license suspended, speeding and no insurance.

Hospital warns parents about rare virus RSV a danger to kids, babies — what parents should know

The symptoms sound a lot like a common cold, but respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause severe illness in babies and toddlers. RSV is a common infection that starts with cold-like symptoms that can worsen over time.

In healthy older children and adults, RSV usually only causes mild symptoms that can be managed at home with over-the-counter fever reducers and pain relievers.

Those at a higher risk of severe infection who get RSV — including infants, people with weakened immune systems, people with chronic heart or lung disease or neuromuscular disorders, and adults age 65 and older — may need to be hospitalized, depending on their symptoms.

In some children, RSV can lead to pneumonia or bronchiolitis, which is an inflammation of the small airway passages entering the lungs.

Bronchiolitis can be caused by many viruses, but RSV is a leading cause of the illness.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports virtually all children will have an RSV infection by the time they turn 2 years old.

The early signs of RSV include runny nose, cough and decreased appetite.

As the infection progresses, the cough may worsen and wheezing and/or difficulty breathing and a fever may develop.

Infants who are younger than 6

months old may only show symptoms such as irritability, unusually low levels of activity, lower appetite and pauses while breathing (apnea) or shallow, rapid breathing.

Most children who have RSV do not require treatment by a doctor or a trip to the emergency room.

Take your child to the ER or call 911 if they stop breathing, turn blue around the lips or nail beds, if they’re showing signs of dehydration (including less frequent wet diapers or crying without tears), or if they’re having severe difficulty breathing, such as nostrils flaring (getting bigger), grunting, or looking like they are getting tired from working hard to breathe.

Call or visit your doctor if you hear wheezing, your child has problems eating or drinking, if they are younger than 3 months and have a fever more than 100.8 or if they have a persistent fever and are older than 3 months.

There is no vaccine for RSV or medication to treat the virus. Antibiotics do not work for RSV or other forms of viral bronchiolitis.

Most children and adults recover in one to two weeks, but some cases of bronchiolitis or RSV require a hospital stay for extra oxygen and supportive care such as frequent suctioning. At home, you can make sure sick kids get enough fluids and suction their nostrils if needed with a suction bulb.

Take steps to prevent infection.

Mazzochi condemns Democrats’ refusal to recommend real property tax reform State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) stood with House Republican Leader Jim Durkin and Property Tax Relief Task Force members to denounce the missed opportunity and failed effort of the Democrat-controlled Task Force to seriously consider and recommend meaningful short- and long-term property tax relief. Rep. Mazzochi served as one of the task force’s cochairs.

“People are tired of empty promises,” Mazzochi said. “Democrats say they want reform. Ignore what the Democrats say; watch what they do.

Republicans placed dozens of im-

pactful reform ideas before the Task Force to protect our schools, help our cities and villages, and lower costs.

Democrats refused to consider and debate them all, and have repeatedly ignored them. It is also telling that their biggest recommendation is to raise even more taxes--that doesn’t bring relief, it is just more of the same.”

Mazzochi highlighted several reform options from the Republican caucus, including: • Property Tax Caps for Senior Citizens. Seniors are being pushed out of their homes because they can’t afford always-rising property taxes.

Both blue state California and red state Indiana have tax caps to prevent this, which Illinois should consider.

• Reduce Unfunded Mandates.

Unfunded state mandates hike school compliance and administrative costs and don’t improve educational outcomes for students. Eliminate them and honor local school control.

• Pension Reform. Without pension reform, income tax dollars will continue to feed legacy costs, not present-day classrooms and public services.

• Eliminate Conflicts of Interest.

The current system protects and rewards the politically-connected.

United Community Concerns Association would like to thank the Elmhurst community for their donations of food, money, and endless hours of time volunteered during this year’s Annual Holiday Food Drive. Their generosity helped make the holiday season brighter for 225 families with children in Elmhurst Community School District 205 schools who received more than 1,300 boxes of donated food, valued at as much as $39,000, and weighing in excess of 12 tons.

We would like to give a special thanks to the City of Elmhurst, City Manager James Grabowski and all employees, especially from

Public Works; Dr. David Moyer, Superintendent of Elmhurst District 205, all District 205 students, families, social workers, and staff; Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot; Elmhurst Jaycees; Elmhurst Park District; Elmhurst Public Library; Elmhurst YMCA; Elmhurst Rotary Club; and to the many local churches, organizations, businesses and approximately 400 volunteers who sorted, packed, loaded cars, and delivered the food.

Well-known conflicts of interest and insider deals plaguing Chicago’s property tax process should be ripped out and replaced with a clear, objective standard that is fair for everyone.

“We can get this done and help our residents if we think big,” said Mazzochi. “It is sad that for all their talk about reform these last several months, the Democrats’ ideas are in essence: pay more taxes here to pretend we’ve ‘saved’ money there.

That’s just playing whack-a-mole; it doesn’t leave taxpayers better off.

“It’s clear the majority on this Task Force will produce no concrete, actionable steps the legislature can take to meaningfully lower property taxes. I look forward to filing real reform legislation as our next legislative session begins.”

Sweet Saturday

Monday morning comes along almost every seven days or so and the workweek looms ahead.

Five. Long. Days. Standing at the end, however, is Saturday. Sweet, unencumbered, unscheduled Saturday. A day to sleep in. A day of freedom.

On Monday morning, I think about the evening and the chores I will accomplish. I will get things done that can’t get done during the workday. Errands. Home repairs.

A need to clean the fridge. My list is long, but I figure I can knock a project or two out of the park.

Monday evening rolls around and somehow at 7 p.m. my plans for projects don’t seem as necessary as they did at 7 a.m. And besides, there’s always Saturday. I can clean the fridge on Saturday. Sweet Saturday.

Tuesday rolls its eyes at the rest of the week, which remains plentiful.

There is much time to get much done. My morning ideals involve an evening spent sorting through the junk drawer; it’s been nearly a year since I did that and you know how junk multiplies.

The day unfolds and I find myself in the middle of Tuesday evening and I hardly have the time or energy to help with dinner prep and cleanup. I decide I deserve a rest and the junk drawer can wait. There’s always Saturday, after all. And I don’t have much going on Saturday, except for plans to sleep in.

Wednesday – hump day. We all know how this is going to unfold, don’t we? My plans for getting ahead on the laundry sounded so good at 10:00 a.m.; but by dinnertime, not so much. Plus (you’re already ahead of me here, aren’t you?) why not just do it on Saturday?

What a joke.

But a true one. My weeks unfold this way. Saturday seems like a great big expanse of time – 24 whole and long hours – when it is three or four

days away. I can get so very, very much done on Saturday. No need to worry about procrastination on the weekdays. Sweet unencumbered Saturday can conquer anything.

By Friday I am feeling the heat.

I realize I have stacked activity and chore and task one on top of the other in anticipation of Sweet Saturday and there is no way no how I will be able to get all the tasks on my to-do list checked off as done. I realize sleeping in may be a dream because my Saturday is no longer unencumbered.

Sigh.

So on Friday I kick it into top gear. I attempt to dive into the tasks I’ve been putting off all week so that Saturday can remain sweet. I launder. I make muffins out of the brown bananas so they don’t go to waste. I vacuum and make a partial attempt at cleaning out the junk drawer. I even make dinner.

By the end of the day (evening) I am exhausted. It’s been a week.

And then Saturday rolls around.

Sweet Saturday. I still have a lengthy to-do list, but I decide to sleep in anyway. Besides, who’s going to see my dirty fridge?

And junk drawers are so named for a reason. Saturdays are meant to be Saturdays. Encumbering them with anything other than an empty to-do list is more bitter than sweet, and I’ll take sweet any day of the week – but especially on Saturday.

EGC prepares for 25th Garden Walk and Faire The next Elmhurst Garden Club (EGC) meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 3, beginning at 11:30 p.m. at Wilder Mansion. Following a luncheon and a meeting, the program will begin at 1 p.m.

by Mel Zaloudek. Zaloudek holds a BSA degree in Taxonomic Botany, the science that finds, defines, describes, classifies, and names plants; has served on the Horticultural faculty at Triton College; and is currently an independent landscape consultant.

The year 2020 marks a special one for the club as members will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the annual “Garden Walk and Faire – An Afternoon in the Garden.” Multiple private and public gardens are featured on the Walk for inspiration and enjoyment of visitors. College news Resident named to Dean’s List Elmhurst resident Gavin Wahlgren has made the Dean’s List for the 2019 fall semester at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Local woman earns degree Kierstin Lane Kurczek of Elmhurst was among 1,404 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during winter commencement exercises Dec. 20 and 21. Kurczek earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.

The December graduates are from 49 countries and 36 states.

Profits from the Garden Walk and Faire are donated to local, cultural and charitable causes. Beginning in 1999, profits were also used to fund scholarships for college students pursuing degrees related to horticulture, landscape design, biology, environmental studies, and science education.

York freshman Keovan wins U.S. long track speedskating title Preparing for nationals event in late February in Minnesota

York freshman Keith Keovan certainly qualifies as having one of the more interesting “What I did on my Christmas vacation” stories.

Keovan won the U.S. Junior C (14-and-under age division) title at the U.S. speedskating long track championships at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City over the holiday break.

The U.S. event serves as the qualification event for the winter World Cup team, world team and junior world team.

However, Keovan is in the Junior C division, which is not old enough to qualify for the junior world team.

In Salt Lake City, Keovan took first in the 500-, 1,000-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter distances.

“I really like the 500 because you can go at top speed,” Keovan told the Independent late last week. “It’s pure speed and it’s the fastest race out of all of them. A regular long track is 400 meters long. You start and do your 100 opener and then come around for a full lap and finish.”

Keovan noted there are two types of competitions. A metric competition involves only a skater racing against time, while a pack competition involves skater-against-skater competition.

Keovan noted when he makes the trek up to the nationals meet in Minnesota in late February, that will be a pack race.

Keovan started ice skating through the Elmhurst YMCA kindergarten after-school program. “I

wanted to go there every day and I really started skating,” he explained. “My mom signed me up for speed-skating classes and I have stuck with it ever since.”

Keovan currently is a member of the Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club and also trains out of the Petit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, one of two indoor ovals in the United States.

“I like skating because it’s really fun and you go fast,” said Keovan, who also played on the York freshman A boys soccer team this past fall. “The sport teaches you to work hard. The more work you put into it, the better you get. This sport makes me want to try harder.”

Keovan, 15, admitted he’s a bit surprised at the success he’s been able to have. “Not like this at this level,” he said. “I always had a feel for the ice when I was younger, but I never thought I would be at this level. I didn’t think I would be here this quick.”

Keovan is hard at work training for the upcoming Minnesota nationals event. “I am hoping to get the national record in the 500, and hopefully place fist overall,” he said. “I have a chance. My time right now in the 500 is only five-hundredths of a second off. The big difference in Minnesota is it is an outdoor track.

A lot of stuff comes into play when you skate outdoors. Salt Lake was indoors and we were at altitude, which means less oxygen so you can go faster because there is not as much wind to break through. I have been training for this and have about a month left before it happens. Hopefully I will pick things up even more by then.”

deavors. “My mom has been very supportive,” he said. “She drives me up to Milwaukee three times a week whenever she can. That’s three hours roundtrip. She’s been extremely supportive of what I am doing.”

When asked about his future plans in the sport and if, given his current successes, the Olympics have entered his mind, Keovan quickly downplayed the thought.

“Yes, hopefully, but I’m not worried about that right now,” he said.

“I am worried about taking small steps toward that. Hopefully next year it might be the junior worlds and then I keep working my way up. Something like the Olympics is not my main focus right now. I just want to keep getting better.”

York hockey teams wins thriller against Loyola Academy Dukes rack up another victory against a stateranked opponent

The York hockey team earned one of those signature wins recently.

The Dukes were 3-2 winners over Loyola Academy at the Addison Ice Arena. Loyola was last year’s state runner-up.

“We have had some impressive wins this season, but none were as impressive as Loyola,” York coach Marc Kapsalis noted.

Kapsalis noted York had not defeated Loyola over the last two seasons, plus playoff seeding was on

the line in this contest.

“It was impressive to watch how hard our boys battled,” he said.

York got on the scoreboard first when freshman forward Frank Nicosia scored an unassisted goal with 2:36 remaining in the first period, giving the Dukes a 1-0 edge.

Loyola answered quickly with a goal by Nick Freda with just under a minute left in the first period.

York went up 2-1 at the 13:24 mark of the second period when Tighe McCarthy found brother, Sean, with a pass. The younger McCarthy fired the puck past Loyola’s goalie for a 2-1 lead.

Loyola’s Freda tied the game at 2-2 with 1:39 left in the second, but York responded with the game’s final goal less than a minute lat-

er when James Millins scored the eventual game-winner off assists from Jack Ray and Mikey Kamienski.

“This was a battle that got more gritty every shift,” Kapsalis said.

“Our guys dug deep and answered each of Loyola’s goals quickly. Recapturing the lead just before heading into the locker room was a huge part of our victory.”

That offensive grit and determination Kapsalis referenced was needed at the other end of the ice for the Dukes in the third period.

Hanging on to that one-goal advantage, the Dukes were hit with backto-back penalties in the final period. Those penalties, with 2:55 to play in regulation, and again with 48 seconds left, found York playing

6-on-4 hockey for most of the final three minutes.

York capped the thriller with penalty killers and goalie Thomas Wesolowski making every sacrifice necessary to stop the Loyola rush, Kapsalis explained. “It was a great hockey game and a big win for us,” he said. “Our staff took the time to ensure the boys knew how proud we were of every one of them and their role in this important win.”

In addition to the key win against state No. 10 Loyola, York holds a pair of wins over No. 2 Glenbrook North, as well as triumphs over No. 3 St. Viator, No. 6 Stevenson and No. 11 Hinsdale Central.

York is ranked No. 16 in the state over the past 10 games and No. 20 overall.

“The boys are firing on all cylinders right now,” said Kapsalis, who went on to praise his players for their effort and competitiveness, particularly over the last month of the season.

The coach noted senior leadership from the likes of Jack Ray, Jackson Trimble, Brad Lynch, Will Ciannella, Nathan Kriz, Declan Quinn, Charles McPherson and Tyler Gelsomino also has been key.

“Not just these guys, but all our players have stepped up and contributed these past few weeks,” Kapsalis said. “Everybody loves to win, but watching these young men mature and start to enjoy being part of something bigger than themselves, for our club and for us as coaches, is our greatest reward.”

At Harlem, York was fourth with its 5,788 total. The 1,102 was the top high game at the tournament. Minooka won the tournament with a 6,003 score. York’s second entry into the tournament took 14th at 4,825 with an 850 high game.

At Plainfield South, York ended at 5,518 and had high games of 981, 943 and 925. Bolden finished fourth overall in the tournament with a 1,254 series. She had high games of 234, 213 and 209 and went over 200 in five of the six games.

Santucci was 22nd at 1,135. She had high games of 226, 202 and 201. Lauren Rickenbrode was 54th at 1,063. She had high games of 192 (twice). Madeline Mountcastle was 58th at 1,051. She had high games of 223 and 183. Klinger was 71st at 1,015 with a high game of 190.

Caroline Collins led the way, finishing 35th overall at 1,098. She finished the day strong, going 170, 205 and 215 after the lunch break. The York boys swimming team came up big at its own recent 14th annual York Invite.

The Dukes were second in the 10-team field with 246 points, comfortably ahead of third-place Deerfield (181).

Plainfield won the title with 337 points.

Ben Harrington took ninth in the 50 free with a time of 23.47. Michael McKenna was 20th at 25.73.

Connor Groya was third in the 100 free with a time of 48.83, while Harrington was sixth at 51.08.

Groya earned a second-place finish in the 200 with a time of

1:47.53, while Cameron Mullis was 16th at 2:04.59.

York also fared well in the 500 where Jay Jensen was second at 4:55.88, while Jacob Dunlap was third at 5:00.27.

In the 100 backstroke, Josh Allen was ninth for York at 1:01.55, while John Schroeder was 11th at 1:02.22 and Anthony Bauer was 12th at 1:02.27.

Nick Kamenica was sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.16. Kessler Dayton was right behind him with a seventh-place finish in 1:07.47 and Colin McNamara was 11th at 1:09.78.

In the 100 butterfly, Andrew Hausoul was eighth at 57.43. Jeremy Harrington was 14th at 1:00.83.

Allen excelled in the 100 IM with a fourth-place time of 1:00.85, while Hausoul was sixth at 1:01.18.

Bauer capped a York top-10 trifecta in the event with an eighth-place showing in 1:01.86.

Jensen took second in the 200 IM

at 1:59.25, while Dunlap was seventh at 2:09.61.

Owen David was sixth in the 1-meter diving with 299.25 points.

Cory Logan was 10th at 261.35.

York ended up in third place in the 200 free relay at 1:30.24 with Ben Harington, Dunlap, Groya and Jensen on that team. York’s second relay entry finished seventh at 1:38.32 with Will Yasdick, Hausoul, Michael McKenna and Jeremy Harrington.

The Dukes were third in the 400 relay at 3:20.85 with Ben Harrington, Dunlap, Groya and Jensen.

York finished sixth in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.22. That team included Bauer, Nick Kameinica, Hausoul and Allen.

York’s varsity team took fourth at the Harlem invitational, third at the Oswego East tournament, sixth at Plainfield South and followed that up with a fourth-place showing at the Mid-State tournament, also hosted

But there’s more. The Dukes junior-varsity team won the Rich East invitational, took first and third after entering a pair of squads in the Oswego East tournament. The York JV team also took 14th at the Plainfield South at the varsity level out of 42 teams thee.

“We have a lot of depth on the team this year with the ability to bring two to three teams to every tournament,” said York coach Katie Turnbull. “And we have the ability for all of them to do well.”

And both the York varsity and JV teams are off to 3-0 starts in West Suburban Conference action.

Junior Holly Santucci and freshman Jermyah (JJ) Bolden lead the Dukes in scoring average. Santucci is at 193, while Bolden checks in at 190. Senior Rose Klinger is right there as well at 185.

At Harlem, York broke the school records for single game and six-game series when it shot 1,102 for a single game (first time York has ever shot 1,100) and 5,788 for the six-game series.

“The girls are bowling great,” said Turnbull.

Turnbull said one area of focus for the team continues to be its play in tournaments after the lunch break.

“Our big challenge right now is

Santucci took fourth in the tournament with a 1,124 (209 and 203 high games). Bolden was eighth at 1,054 (high games of 220 and 204). Rickenbrode was 19th at 1,021 (181 high game) and Klinger was 25th at 941 (210 high game).

York’s JV Green team won the JV tournament at 4,534. Catalano was third overall at 990 (184 high game).

Khloe Lesus was fourth at 971 (180 high game). Katherine Svehla was fifth at 926 (178 high game), while Jensen was seventh at 913 (166 high game).

York’s JV White team was third at 4,071. Gabby Costabile was ninth at 894 (187 high game). Anna Clink was 13th at 858 (166 high game) and Maya Valdez was 17th at 811 (153 high game).

“It’s been a great first half,” said Turnbull. “The team is bowling very well, and it’s usually not until the second half of the season that we have really hit our stride in past years. So if that is the case, we are only going to get better and better as the weeks go on.”

York has a busy week with WSC duals on the road against Downers Grove North and Willowbrook (today at Stardust in Addison), plus tournaments at Hinsdale South (Friday) and Hinsdale Centrall (Saturday).

Banged up IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team faces tough competition Knights squared off against St. Pat’s and York

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team is in the middle of a meat-grinder portion of its schedule.

The Knights squared off last week with Chicago St. Patrick, crosstown neighbor York and Aurora Central Catholic.

And though the Knights went 0-3 in those games, coach TJ Tyrrell took away plenty of positives.

“It was a tough week,” he said.

“We were a little banged up. We had that real nice win against St. Francis (in early January) and then we had to quickly turnaround and prepare for a very good St. Pat’s

team. We didn’t come out ready to go in that game and they took it to us.”

The next day the Knights made the trek down the street to York for a non-conference game, which York won 49-40. “I thought we came out very focused against York,” said Tyrrell.

“The kids were very excited about that game. We had great community support. The crowd was outstanding for both teams. They hit first early, but we stuck right with them and battled back. We cut the lead to one point and had an outstanding second quarter going into halftime.”

IC Catholic Prep suffered a tough blow in the game when standout Zach Jordan went down with an ankle injury and did not play most of the second half.

The York boys basketball team continued its winning ways with two more victories to kick off the 2020 portion of its schedule.

The Dukes were 49-40 non-conference winners at home against neighbor IC Catholic Prep and then went to Downers Grove and recorded a 59-44 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win to move to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.

In the Downers North win, Nate Shockey hit for a career-high 34 points to help boost the Dukes to victory.

“Nate shot it really well,” said York coach Vince Doran. “He had six 3s. He played really well from beginning to end. He had a really solid game. Nate also had his best defensive game. I thought he created a lot of offense with his defense.”

Doran was pleased with how his team again performed defensively and on the road. “Downers North is real big and real young,” he said. “We did a really good job of keeping them off the glass. A win on the road in our league is a good thing. We only had a one-point lead at halftime and then had a great third quarter that gave us control of the game. Nate had two steals in a row that pushed the lead into double digits.”

Shockey shot 12-for-16 from the field and 6-for-8 from three against Downers North. He also had six steals and five rebounds. More impressive, Shockey scored 19 of his 34 points off Downers North turnovers.

Jeff Grace added eight points and three steals, while Jake Brandolino had seven points and four assists. Nick Hesch had six points and four rebounds, and shot 4-for-6 from the foul line.

In the win against IC Catholic Prep. Shockey hit for 24 points, which included three 3-pointers and a 7 of 9 effort from the foul line. Hesch added eight points.

“Nick Hesch had a good game along with Nate,” said Doran. “The scorebook says Nick only had eight points, but he hit a big shot for us in the third quarter. We were up only one going into the half and wound up extending the lead. We had a good start to the third quarter and wound up pushing it to double digits and then hung on from there.”

Doran also liked the way his team responded coming out of the holiday break. “That first game after Christmas can be a tough one,” he said. “The IC game we had a great crowd at home, especially for a Wednesday night.

It was for a great cause with the Relay for Life cancer benefit. And then we won a game in the league on the road.”

Now, York heads into a brutal stretch on the schedule with seven games in a seven-day timeframe. York started that run earlier this week against Glenbard West. The Dukes host Oak Park-River Forest tonight in a WSC Silver tilt before heading out to Wheaton-Warrenville South Saturday and this coming Monday for the annual Martin Luther King holiday shootout.

The Dukes play two games Saturday at Wheaton South and two more Monday there before returning to WSC Silver play this coming Tuesday against Proviso West.

“This is a crazy stretch of games,” said Doran. “That’s seven games in a week. It’s unbelievable. The Martin Luther King shootout at Wheaton, we love that shootout. We always see great competition there. The kids want to play games and we certainly will be playing a lot of games.”

“We’re a little banged up,” Tyrrell noted. “It was a rough week going 0-3, but this is not the time to feel sorry for ourselves. We have a lot of big games coming up.”

Tyrrell again cited strong play from senior Danny Cronin during the recent three-game stretch.

“With guys being injured, we’ve had other guys step up,” the coach said. “Someone who is very fun to coach and watch is Danny Cronin, our senior forward. He plays extremely hard and gives everything

he has every game. He’s diving on the floor and fighting for rebounds.

He does so many intangibles for the team. We are very thankful for his effort.”

Cronin went for 18 points against Aurora Central Catholic.

Dom Gaudio had 15 points, while Michael Hilgart had 10 points. IC Catholic Prep lost the contest 7057.

“Dom and Michael have been key to what we do,” said Tyrrell.

“Dom has been a leader for us, not just on the court, but off the court.

He has a great mindset this season.

Tyrrell noted IC Catholic Prep has games coming up with Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division leader Aurora Christian, along with Bishop McNamara and crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian.

“Aurora Christian is a first-place team and then it Bishop Mac and then Timothy Christian, which is a big game for us from both a rivalry and playoff standpoint,” he said.

“We have been very shorthanded depth-wise and are trying to get healthy and ready to go for these games.”

Tyrrell noted the tough schedule the Knights have played is something he hopes will pay dividends come February and the IHSA Class 2A state series.

“When you get these big-time games, you are talking about teams that are leading their conferences with York and Pat’s, and those are good conferences,” he said. “Each team we played ran a different zone defense and they had different offensive matchups. In a playoff scenario you have to be able to quickly adjust and game plan. We had the kids prepped and focused with several scouting reports. The kids got up for those games and that’s exactly what we want to see. It’s why you schedule those games—to get that playoff atmosphere.”

IC Catholic Prep was at 12-6 overall and 2-2 in MSC Blue play after the Aurora Central game.

In the 70-33 loss to St. Patrick, the Knights trailed 13-8 after the first quarter and 34-16 at halftime.

St. Pat’s scored 32 points in the third quarter to blow the game open. Lee had 11 points, while Jordan added seven points (1 three-pointer).

Danny Roberto had four points, including one 3-pointer.

The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team embraced the role of road warriors last week.

The Knights went 2-1 during a three-game stretch against Rosary, York and Elgin St. Edward.

IC Catholic Prep headed to Aurora and won a 37-33 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest.

Alia Johnson had 12 points, while Claire Wagner added 11 points.

“It was one of those games where both teams played good defense, but both teams had a hard time scoring,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Todd Fisher. “We both got shots off, but both teams defended well. I was impressed with our defense. When you hold any team to 33 points, we’ll take that any day.

We hit some big free throws in the fourth quarter. Claire hit some big free throws for us.”

IC Catholic Prep dropped a 4737 non-conference game around the bend at York. “We played a good second half against York,” said Fisher. “York was up 14-6 in the first and then we didn’t score a field goal in the second quarter. We had three free throws in the second quarter. We couldn’t score.”

Fisher was even more thrilled with the team’s play on the road in Elgin at St. Edward where IC Catholic Prep walked away with a 5546 MSC Blue win to move to 13-9 overall and 5-2 in MSC Blue play.

Riverside-Brookfield leads the MSC Blue with no league losses.

Against St. Edward, Gia Gaudio had 18 points, while Wagner had 16 points and Hannah Johnson added 10 points.

“We attempted 41 free throws in the game and they shot 13,” said Fisher. “Our kids did a great job of attacking the basket and getting them in foul trouble. We knew they would defend us man-to-man and like the first time we played them

Gaudio had 10 of her points in the fourth quarter, including 6-for8 on throws. Hannah Johnson shot 3-for-4 from the line in the fourth while Wagner and Annie Guinan combined to go 3-for-4 in the last quarter from the line.

“We did a great job from the foul line in the fourth quarter,” Fisher said. “Even though the stats show we didn’t shoot well from the freethrow line, we went 12-for-14 in the fourth quarter. It’s a coaching cliché when I say we hit them when we needed to but we kind of really did. We also got after it on defense.

We were losing this game 28-22 and then held them to 18 points in the second half. Our defense was much better in the second half.”

The Knights played on the road at Chicago Heights Marian Catholic earlier in the week and will host Richmond-Burton in a non-conference game tonight.

“We talked after the St. Edward game and at practice about the fact we are very pleased with how we played in these three games,” Fisher said. “We had a hard game Tuesday at Rosary and a tough game at York and then another hard conference game at St. Ed’s. That’s three games in a row. Those kids were tired and I have to give them credit they played great at Ed’s. It was a fun game to watch.”

York girls gymnastics team fourth at Palatine Dukes post new season-high score of 137

The York girls gymnastics team took its next step forward at the recent Palatine invitational.

The Dukes placed fourth at Palatine with a new season-high score of 137. Prior to Palatine, York had posted identical then-season-high scores of 128 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division meets against Glenbard West and Hinsdale Central.

Coach Nick Criel lauded the recent efforts Megan Cronin and Martha Miklyukh. Criel noted Cronin’s floor routine now includes a double back tuck, while Miklyukh is doing a handspring front on vault and is doing well in the all-around.

“Martha has stepped up her skills on all her events,” said Criel. “She is adding advanced high-superior skills into her routines.”

Lily Cmiel, Criel added, is improving with high skills on floor exercise and beam, while Olivia Hyson, he noted, has stepped up to varsity on

bars with a consistent routine.

“The team is doing very well with its overall gymnastics form and how they present themselves as gymnasts,” Criel pointed out.

Criel said the team is hard at work on advancing beam routines to the next level. “We need to improve our consistency on beam,” he said.

“Routines are set well, we just need to improve our form and stay on that beam.”

At the same time, Criel noted York’s two strongest events are floor exercise and vault. “Our skill level is high and these are our most consistent events.”

York did suffer some bad news on the injury front in the past four weeks with the loss of its two best all-arounders in Maryalice Shockey (ankle) and Angelina Deblasio (leg), Criel noted.

“Our main focus now is to maintain our score without those two all-arounders,” Criel said.

York heads to the Niles North invitational Saturday. The Dukes then wrap up the regular season with a WSC Silver meet against Lyons Township (Jan. 22 at home), the York invitational on Jan. 25 and then the WSC Silver meet at Hinsdale Central on Saturday, Feb. 1.

charge that carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

In a courtroom on Jan. 10, Jensen pleaded guilty to the class H felony theft charge and her attorney made a $250,000 restiCynthia tution payment on Jensen her behalf.

Circuit Court Judge Phillip Koss sentenced Jensen to make an additional $24,575.58 in restitution payments within six months and serve two years of probation on the class H felony under a plea agreement.

Several other charges she faced were dismissed, but read into the record.

Jensen was charged Sept. 25, 2018, with seven counts of identity theft for financial gain and two counts of theft in a business setting of more than $10,000, all as a party to a crime.

According to the criminal complaint, Jensen, an Illinois licensed CPA and former business manager of Rock Valley Publishing, Southern Lakes Newspapers and Southern Lakes Publishing, made unauthorized transactions from the company to herself and her husband between May 2015 and early 2018.

Company records show that Jensen transferred $871,560 in company funds into her personal accounts from May 11, 2015, until Feb. 9, 2018, without authorization.

Jensen opened a slot machine video gaming business called CJ’s Gaming in DeKalb, Illinois, close to the same time the theft started.

ager for the publishing firm, Jensen made unauthorized ACH transfers from the company into her personal accounts and issued checks to herself and her husband without authorization by forging a signature of a company owner, according to the criminal complaint. Jensen transferred funds to her personal account and made payments back to the company from CJ’s Gaming in an attempt to pay back the stolen funds.

In January of 2018, bank managers noticed checks issued to Jensen without matching signatures. An audit at

the time revealed that the defendant owed the company $273,991.57 of the $871,560 in unauthorized transfers.

A company demand for Jensen to immediately return the funds was unsuccessful, according to company officials.

In July 2018, the company owners filed a police report at the City of Delavan Police Department.

Rock Valley Publishing publishes this newspaper and several other weekly newspapers in DuPage County.

Art Museum to open two new exhibits Tribute to local artist Sandra Jorgensen coming Jan. 25

Two exciting exhibitions open soon at Elmhurst Art Museum, opening Saturday, Jan. 25 through Sunday, April 12.

Sandra Jorgensen is a broad survey exhibition showcasing the works of the late artist-curator who was the driving force behind the internationally known Elmhurst College Chicago Imagist collection and helped found the Elmhurst Art Museum. The exhibition is dedicated to Jorgensen’s artistic accomplishments—as a painter, photographer, and her role as a major caretaker of Chicago’s cultural history. Featured in the exhibition is a series of never-before-seen photos taken by Jorgensen of the Chicago Imagists in their homes and studios.

The opening event for the Sandra Jorgensen exhibition will take place

on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 1:30 p.m., featuring a conversation with artist and curator Suellen Rocca and writer Margaret Hawkins who will discuss the life and work of Jorgensen, complete with personal anecdotes.

Business brief Pier 1 to close 450 stores
