Lori Murray to receive ECCI’s Chairman’s Award To be honored at Chamber’s 100th Awards Gala

Lori Murray of Inland Bank and Trust has been selected to receive the 2018 Chairman’s Award at the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 100th Annual Awards Gala in the main floor ballroom at The Drake Oak Brook Hotel on Friday, Jan. 25.

Traditionally, the ECCI’s annual award is given to a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors for his/her outstanding service to the Board, Chairman and President-CEO or to a non-Director for praiseworthy contributions or performance.

“Lori is one of those quietly understated individuals who willingly steps up to the plate whenever asked and often in times of great need,” said John R. Quigley, ECCI president and CEO. Outgoing ECCI Board Chair Ken Bartels will present the award to Murray.

Since joining Inland in 2012, Murray has served as VP Regional Manager since 2015, managing the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of 10 branch locations.

In 2018, Murray completed an appointed term on ECCI’s Board of Directors dating back to 2016, served on the Executive Committee as Second Vice Chair and Chair of the Membership Committee, and was elected to her first three-year term as a Director.

During her term as Membership Committee Chair, ECCI changed its annual dues investment structure from employee-based to tiers and reported membership growth in 11 of 12 months despite the absence of a Director of Member Services for three months.

Senior Commission presents Community Conversations Two presentations will be held for seniors on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 No. York Rd. Both are free and sponsored by the Elmhurst Senior Commission and the City of Elmhurst.

The first presentation is “Money Smart for Older Adults.” Learn the important points to consider in planning for a more secure financial future including: 1) how to guard against identity theft and other forms of financial exploitation; 2) how to prepare financially for unexpected life events; and, 3) what to have ready in case disaster strikes.

Elmhurst Police Sgt. Brett Kaczorowski’s family came to lend their support at the City Council meeting on Monday, Jan. 7, when he was sworn in to his new post as Watch Commander.

Kaczorowski introduced his wife Pattie, his 3-year-old daughter Elizabeth, and his son Blake who, after his father said he was 5, emphatically announced he was in fact “5 and-a-HALF!” to the delight of the audience.

Starting in January, the City of Elmhurst is offering two new options for residents: a 35-gallon refuse toter and a 65-gallon organic waste toter.

Residents will now have the option to rent a 65-gallon organic waste toter from Republic Services at an initial cost of $17.50 per month. The toter can be used for leaves, grass and other organic waste (including fruits, vegetables, meat, etc.). The organic material will be taken to a composting facility and will not be landfilled.

There is NO need to purchase yard waste stickers for the toter each week. If residents wish to use this service, they need to call Republic Services directly at 708-345-7050.

Residents will be billed directly by Republic Services for this program.

Police beat

Fleeing, eluding

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Dec. 28 Police said that while a reporting officer was on an extra patrol near Van Auken and Gladys at around 8:40 a.m., the officer observed the suspect’s vehicle with heavy tinted windows, violated a stop sign. When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the vehicle continued southbound onto eastbound Armitage at a high rate of speed. The officer lost sight of the vehicle after last seeing it westbound Gladys from Howard. The area was checked with no results.

Assault, battery

Dec. 23 Sean T. Iacobellis, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for battery in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 6:47 p.m. Police said that while walking behind Iacobellis’ vehicle, the victim banged on the rear of the vehicle.

Iacobellis exited the vehicle, approached the victim and shoved him, according to police.

Disorderly conduct

Dec. 28 A complainant in the 600 block of N. York told police at around 10:55 p.m. that a suspect came into the store, demanded to speak with the manager, cursed at the victim and stood outside the store for longer than an hour. The victim was alarmed by the suspect’s behavior.

The suspect is a service technician for a company the complainant no longer does business with. An officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Jan. 2 A complainant in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police at around 5:13 p.m. that a suspect attempted to grab her phone out of her hand. While reaching for the phone his body weight reportedly put pressure on her arm.

Due to conflicting stories, lack of visible injuries, and unwillingness to sign complaints, no arrests were made. The suspect left the home for the evening.

CALL 800-222-TIPS charged with DUI, speeding, improper lane usage and driving without headlights subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 4:57 a.m. Police said the suspect’s vehicle had fresh front-end crash damage which was determined to have occurred in a hit-andrun crash in Northlake. The Northlake Police Department was notified.

Shadonay Freites, 23, of Cicero, was charged with DUI and no insurance in the 400 block of N. York at around 1:45 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle, Freites was located sleeping inside with the keys in the ignition, and was found to be DUI. Chase J. Nacker, 20, of Countryside, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer Drive at around 3:35 p.m.

Adam Pozzi, 30, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near First and York around 12:48 a.m.

Dec. 31 Police said that subsequent to a 911 investigation at around 2:42 p.m., the suspects were found to be highly intoxicated and under the age of 21. The suspects were cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor and transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment.

Jan. 1 A 28-year-old Gary, Ind., woman was charged with state charges of DUI, two counts of domestic battery, illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor and driving without headlights when required near North and Route 83 at around 1:15 a.m. Police said officers were dispatched to a gas station in the above location for a report of a domestic. The complainant advised his ex-girlfriend was intoxicated and keeps trying to fight him. Upon arrival, officers observed the female suspect driving out of the parking lot. A traffic stop was conducted for driving without headlights and the driver was found to be intoxicated, according to police.

Dec. 30 Jerry Benson, 31, of Mount Prospect, was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while license suspended and improper parking/ stopping on a roadway subsequent to a driver passed out behind the wheel near St. Charles and Lawndale at around 4:19 a.m.

Lupe DeLapuz, 28, of Hammond, Ind., was charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident near York and Industrial at around 7:22 p.m.

John Kerrigan, 53, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, parking in the roadway and no insurance subsequent to a call for what police said was an unconscious person in a vehicle parked in the middle of the roadway near Rex and Montrose at around 11:13 a.m.

Dec. 26 A 38-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence in the 500 block of Swain at around 7:13 p.m.

Police said a reporting officer spoke to the victim who stated that the suspect had pushed her to the ground, pulled her hair and took her phone to prevent her from calling 911.

Dec. 29 Alexis M. Ramirez, 22, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, speeding, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 2:06 a.m.

Francisco J. Zepeda-Ponce, 27, of Des Plaines, was charged with DUI, damage to city property, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and disobeying a stop sign subsequent to a traffic crash in the 400 block of N. Howard at around 5:29 a.m.

Dec. 28 A victim in the 800 block of N. Eastland came into the police station at around 1:24 p.m. to report she received a threatening text from a suspect. The officer was unable to make contact with the suspect.

Dec. 27 A complainant told police at around 1:37 a.m. that his son received several text messages from a suspect relating something was going to happen to the victim because he was hanging out with the suspect’s girlfriend. An officer made contact with the suspect who admitted to sending messages to the victim and agreed to cease all contact.

Nov. 5 A complainant—the manager of a restaurant in the 100 block of N. York—told police at around 1:16 p.m. that a former employee has been harassing current employees and the business.

Obstruction

Jan. 2 Keith Campbell, 23, of Lombard, was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license revoked, no valid registration and no insurance near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 12:27 p.m. Police said Campbell supplied the officer with a fictitious name and date of birth. His true identity was established and he was found to have a revoked driver’s license, according to police.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Jan. 3 Noor M. Qabalawi, 19, of Chicago, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 12:09 a.m.

Jan. 2 Abel C. Medina, 22, of Glen Ellyn, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and speeding while Saul T. Mendoza, 21, of Glen Ellyn, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 12:26 a.m.

Francisco Uriostegui, 21, of Franklin Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a to a traffic stop near North and Myrtle at around 1:36 a.m.

Jan. 1 Gustavo Garcia, 23, of Burbank, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and disobeying

railroad gates subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Berkley at around 12:11 a.m.

Najhay D. Neal, 21, of Carol Stream, was issue citations for illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 10:45 a.m.

Dec. 31 Elijah Hawkins, 21, of Carol Stream, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 10:50 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle, Hawkins was found to be in possession of cannabis and one MDMA pill.

Police said officers responded to the Elmhurst Hospital emergency room at around 6:50 p.m. for a report of a women who had just injected heroin. Contact was made with the suspect who admitted to using heroin and was found to be in possession of a syringe and unknown type of blue pill, according to police.

Dec. 29 Brenda Garcia-Latiolet, 22, of Northlake, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 1:25 a.m.

Dec. 28 Amber Clanton, 24, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, no valid registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Mitchell and Garfield at around 4:42 p.m.

Candace A. Trent, 22, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, tinted windows and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North End and Van Auken at around 9:36 a.m.

Police said an officer observed a parked, suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 9:51 p.m. which had the odor of cannabis coming from the open windows.

Both juvenile occupants admitted to possessing cannabis and relinquished the cannabis to an officer, according to police. They were cited for possession of cannabis and released to their parents on scene.

Dec. 26 Darnell P. Hill Washington, 25, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 12:50 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Dec. 31 A victim in the 300 block of W. Lake told police at around 2:28 p.m. that she misplaced her wallet while at Sky Zone and found that it was turned in to the front desk. When checking her wallet, the victim noticed the credit cards were missing. The suspect who had turned in the wallet was found to be in possession of the credit cards. The victim did not wish to pursue the matter. The suspect’s father was notified of the incident.

Dec. 29 A victim received a SnapChat at around 7:17 p.m. from a person he thought was a female schoolmate, asking him to meet at Jackson School.

The victim arrived at the meeting location but did not see the female student whose name was on the SnapChat account. Instead, an older teenager described as a white male arrived and chased the victim home.

Michael Perrino, 80 Michael Perrino, of Elmhurst, passed away surrounded by family on January 2, 2019, at the age of 80. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, his service went beyond that to his country. He was a loving husband to Sharon Jean for 57 years, loving father of Michael N. (Cindy) Perrino, Valerie (Jay) Cooper, and Natalie Perrino; a proud grandfather of Nico, Dan, and Christina Perrino; Jaden, Ethan, Caitlin, and Rachel Cooper, and Chance Perrino; a devoted son to the late Rose (nee Loizzi) and the late Nicholas Perrino; a dear brother of Theresa Perrino and the late Marie Loizzi; a fond uncle

of Francine (Ray) LeRoy and the late Roselle Frey; and an honored great uncle of Matt LeRoy, Rae-Mi LeRoy, Carolyn Arny, and Kevin Frey.

The son of immigrants from southern Italy, Michael was born and raised in Melrose Park, where he was a member of the class of 1956 at Proviso East high school.

After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force. When he returned home, he went to work at JewelOsco, where he met his future wife Sharon. Sharon said she would purposely stock shelves near his butcher’s station to try and capture his attention. It worked, they married, had three children and built a life together.

Michael and Sharon later moved to Elmhurst with their young kids.

Dec. 30 Police said an officer responded for a delayed report of a retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 11:34 a.m.

A complainant told police he was notified by an employee that a theft had occurred. He reviewed security video and confirmed that the suspect placed three clothing items into a shopping bag and fled the store on foot. The complainant believes additional items were stolen during the incident. The suspect was described as a white male in his 20s with a medium build, wearing a blue hoodie with red writing on the left sleeve and an insignia on the left chest, gray pants and light brown boots.

Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of W. Fremont at around 1:45 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) attempted to make two purchases from her Chase Visa credit card. Both charges were declined and there was no dollar loss to the victim.

Dec. 27-Dec. 28 Burglary was reported at a business in the 100 block of W. Vallette sometime between the above dates.

Police said that upon arrival, officers observed a shattered entrance door, the front reception desk ransacked and several cabinet doors opened.

Dec. 19-Dec. 22 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of N. York between the above dates. A complainant told police that a fraudulent prescription for 90 pills of Oxycodone® was filled in Palatine, using the victim’s DEA number. The victim was given an identity theft packet.

Nov. 2-Dec. 16 A victim in the 400 block of E. Vallette told police at around 4:28 p.m. that an unknown suspect(s) used his personal information to open three fraudulent credit card accounts between the above dates.

The victim notified the creditors of the fraudulent accounts.

Nov. 28 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of N. Elm at around 1:27 p.m. A victim came into the police station to report an unknown suspect hacked his PayPal account and transferred $720 from his bank checking account into his PayPal account. Further, the suspect changed the victim’s PayPal account shipping address, email and name on the account.

Oct. 24 Identity theft was reported in the 700 block of N. Michigan. A victim told police that unknown suspect(s) used her personal information to create a fraudulent Verizon wireless account and purchase an iPhone XS Max.

Dec. 26 Theft was reported in the 1200 Warrant arrest block of S. Prospect at around 6:22 Jan. 2 Police said that Caitlin R. Denz, p.m. A complainant told police that the suspect entered his residence 24, of Lombard, came into the Elmand removed a gray laptop, black hurst Police Department at around

1:54 p.m. to post bail for an individual in custody. Denz was found to have a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Palmer and Marion at around 12:39 a.m., Marshall Reed, 23, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be wanted on a warrant by Chicago Police Department and was in possession of open alcohol in a motor vehicle. Reed was issued a citation for illegal Transportation of alcohol and was transported to the DuPage County Jail on the warrant.

Dec. 30 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Lamont at around 6:43 p.m., Fernando Torres-Ramos, 21, of Addison, was found to have no valid driver’s license and wanted on two warrants out of DuPage County. The suspect also was charged with no valid driver’s license and unlawful use of an electronic device.

It was there that Michael spent most of his life, raising the kids, visiting with his grandchildren, and enjoying his retirement after 40 years at Jewel-Osco.

Those who remember Michael will recall many things, including his hearty laugh, his big smile, and his stories about his family and his time in the Air Force. He also told stories about hitchhiking home from California on Route 66; about the mostaccioli his Italian mother made; and about the homemade walnuts and almonds his father and uncles would use at the dinner table to re-enact World War I battles from their time in the Italian army.

Michael was also a man of many talents and interests. He could draw a perfect knight on horseback and had the most beautiful penmanship; he loved boats and built elaborate galleon models; he could play the harmonica if you put one in front of him and he once built a guitar from scratch.

Because he came from a poor immigrant family that emphasized work over education, Michael never attended college. That didn’t stop him from becoming a lifelong learner. He was a voracious reader, always with a stack of books from the library on the end table (usually non-fiction). Among his proudest moments was seeing all three of children graduate from college.

In his retirement, Michael’s grandchildren were a constant source of pride, fulfillment, and joy for him. When he wasn’t building battlefield models with them, taking them on fishing trips to Eldridge Park, or leading an explorations of Graue Mill or the Morton Arboretum, he could be found at their sporting events, graduation ceremonies, and dinner tables — always with a smile, a good story, and reminders of how proud he was of them.

Memorial visitation was held Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst.

Give yourself a gift of the here and now

We are all living just ten years away from a world we can hardly imagine.

I’m not talking about technology, global warming or advances in medical science. I’m talking in the personal sense. For most of us, our lives will be completely different ten years from now. Just like they were probably completely different ten years ago.

Think about it.

Where were you 10 years ago?

What were you doing? What thoughts occupied your time? What did your days look like?

I was changing diapers and probably pregnant, but that’s just me. I’m happy to report that all my kids are now potty trained and I am no longer preoccupied with my due date. Some changes are for the better.

Ten years before that, I didn’t yet know the rigors of parenthood firsthand, and was probably living what I now would consider a fairly self-centered life. This means I got to eat when I wanted, sleep when I wanted and watch what I wanted on TV. These days, I’m in what I call the ‘taxi season’ of life. I spend a lot of my time driving other people around.

Most of them are the people I gave birth to. They’ve since grown into kids who need rides to school, practice, games and lessons.

Ten years from now, they’ll have their own driver’s licenses and won’t need my taxi services anymore. Some of them will probably be living in houses of their own. My son’s voices will have changed, and they’ll probably all be taller than me.

Ten years beyond that they may be driving me around, but I’m not ready to go there just yet – even in my imagination. Going too far into the future feels uncomfortable and unsure.

There are just too many what ifs.

So, for the most part, we live in the moment. Of course we have to think long-term when it comes to things like life insurance and retirement plans, but otherwise, our minds stay firmly planted in the here and now. When you are pushing a baby stroller or changing a diaper, it’s hard to imagine that the day will come when the baby will walk and take care of his poop all by himself, let alone a day when that same baby may be pushing you.

Still, nothing in life is permanent.

ios. Pretty soon they are pressing the buttons on the microwave and before you know it they can cook a pretty mean frozen pizza. Some of them never learn to flush the toilet, but never mind the minor details.

As the years progress, we simply carry on. We start life out by being carried. We grow older and independent, carrying a tune as we drive around town in our first car. We carry a large backpack in college. After college graduation and marriage (if everything goes in order) we find ourselves carrying a baby or two. Our babies grow and we carry their hockey or dance equipment. They grow some more and we might have to carry a balance on their college tuition. Finally life comes full circle and we get to carry our grandbabies.

Most of us don’t think about the big picture like that. I know I don’t. I’m much more likely to focus on current events: The bills I need to pay, the upcoming choir concert, returning a phone call from a friend and the fact that we’re out of milk again. Heck, I find it hard to focus on more than just one day on the calendar sometimes.

That’s taking life in the here and now to the extreme.

I heard a saying once that went something like this: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why they call it the present.”

Those are probably pretty good words to live by. Staying in the moment keeps us grounded. It allows us the luxury of feeling like now will last forever. That, truly, is a gift.

Pretty simple, really, but most of the more profound things in life usually are.

New year is a time for reflection, hope for future

As I print out the final newsletter I sent in 2018 and put it in the binder for year, I am awash in emotion. I have been sending a weekly “joy letter” since September 2008.

Ten years. (I have been writing this newspaper column even longer, since May 2001.)

So much life has transpired in these last ten years. Gratitude overflows my cup (and leaks out my eyes.)

When I first started writing my email newsletter, it was a follow-up to a joy workshop I had done. I had more to say. I wanted my people to stay in tune with what they had discovered about themselves and their own joy journey.

The newsletter now goes out to thousands of people across the land.

I still have a lot to say. I still want to encourage people on their path. I want to uplift and fortify.

And I write it for me.

times it’s easier, sometimes it’s not.

Sometimes it’s a baby step, sometimes it a flying jump. Every time, it’s worth it.

The new year is upon us. Time for introspection and reflection.

Time for attention and intention.

Time for action.

That is the kicker.

We (me included) often ponder our possibilities and never move toward what we want. We see it, feel it, maybe even believe it’s possible, and we stay swirling in the comfortable familiarity.

What I have learned over and over is that the new normal is fantastic. Any action is good. It gets me in momentum.

When I relax and trust and be me, shaky and confident at the same time, things work out. Better than I imagine. New opportunities and invites fall from the sky. Things fall into place.

The secret to living an incredible life is first to believe it’s possible.

Second, take one action, large or

small (or teeny tiny) toward what you desire. Sometimes for me that is as simple as buying a new domain name. It could be a new haircut. A new pair of shoes. Something outwardly symbolic and empowering for you.

It could be saying no to an obligation that no longer brings you joy. It could be saying yes to something that excites you, even if it feels a wee bit scary to venture in.

Take a few minutes for some quiet time with yourself. What would you like more of this year? What would you like less of? What can you do to make that happen?

My ceaseless motto, one I need to inhale every day: Do more of what makes you happy.

So simple. Yet we do not always heed.

Let us see the new as an adventure. One to enjoy, to savor. To explore and discover. To love and let be.

That is my wish for you and me.

Join me, will you? Keep me up to date on your leaps and baby steps.

Let us encourage one another to do more of what makes us happy. That is how we can change the world.

Woman carjacked at Oak Brook Center Florida man held for $500,000 bond

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger announced last week that bond has been set for a Florida man accused of Anthony Riola robbing a woman of her car from the Oak Brook Shopping Center.

Anthony Riola, 39, of Florida, appeared at a bond hearing, where Judge Brian Telander set bond at $500,000 with 10% to apply. In all, Riola has been charged with one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking (Class X Felony), one count of Armed Violence (Class X Felony), one count of Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Theft Over $10,000 (Class 2 Felony.)

It is alleged that at 11:50 a.m., December 29, 2018, Riola approached a woman seated in her car in the Oak Brook Center parking lot. It

is alleged that Riola told the woman, “Give me your car,” and that he told her he had a knife and then brandished the weapon. According to Berlin’s report, Riola entered the vehicle after the woman fled but was unable to start the vehicle as he did not have the keys. Riola then left that vehicle and approached a valet parking attendant and entered a running vehicle and drove away, while the valet attendant and owner of the vehicle stood nearby.

An investigation by the Oak Brook Police Department led to Riola who was apprehended in Chicago later than day.

“My office will do everything within our power to ensure that DuPage County residents will not have to worry about their personal safety while out shopping, dining or otherwise enjoying themselves … ,” Berlin said.

Woman found blacked out on sidewalkAssault was reported on Jan. 1 at about 6:22 a.m., when the mother of a victim told police the victim contacted her on the phone and complained that a girl had struck the victim on the head with a hammer. The mother drove to the Elmhurst area and found the victim lying unconscious on a sidewalk near Elmhurst Hospital.

The mother transported the victim to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment. The victim refused to speak to officers about the incident or where it occurred.

The victim was treated and released.

Man found lying on bathroom floor On Dec. 31, Fred Conidi, 67, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication in the 100 block of S. York at around 10:28 p.m. Officers reportedly found Conidi intoxicated and lying on the bathroom floor.

800 block of N. Willow at around 6:38 a.m. The victim told police that the suspect was irate, out of control and had pushed her. It was found the suspect had a valid warrant, was placed under arrest and transported to the police department. The suspect was charged with domestic battery.

Business receives anonymous threat over phone A complainant in the 700 block of N. Church told police at around 2:24 p.m. related that the suspect called the business and demanded cash or he would release information which would harm the company. The suspect related that he contacted the business manager and requested payment for overtime work he performed. The suspect was advised to no longer contact the business or the complainant.

City plan recycling event The City of Elmhurst, in cooperation with DuPage County, will host an Electronics Recycling event on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Public Works Facility, 985 S Riverside Drive.

The following items can be recycled free of charge: computers, laptops, DVD players, game consoles, mobile phones, VCRs, mice, scanners, fax machines, keyboards, satellite receivers, copiers, printers, digital converter boxes, cable receivers, servers.

Fees for TVs and monitors: Up to 21 inches, $25; 21 inches or larger, $35. A coupon and 501(c)(3) tax receipt provided upon payment at the site. Payment can be made in advance at recycle.eworksesi.org.

Symphony season continues with ‘Trumpet Glory’

These two students work with wires, bending and twisting them to create a base for their gem trees. Lizzadro Museum hosted a Gem Day celebration on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Enjoy an afternoon of music as the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, continues its 2018-19 season with a concert of Baroque favorites on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. “Trumpet Glory” features soloists from the Symphony, who will play Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and Concerto Grosso No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 3, C.P.E. Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto in G minor, performed by Maestro Alltop, and music of Telemann, including Concerto for Violin, Cello, Trumpet and Strings in D major and Concerto for Three Trumpets in D major.

The performances of Telemann’s works and Handel’s Concerto Grosso are underwritten by a generous gift from Carl Amrhein.

A bake sale to benefit the Youth Outreach programs of the ESO will be held throughout the afternoon.

The Elmhurst Symphony performs at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, located at 149 W. Brush Hill Rd. in Elmhurst. The church has accessible parking and facilities; parking is free. The concert experience at ECRC is enhanced by the informative and lively discussion, Behind the Music Stand, led by audience favorite Dr. Ted Hatmaker, which takes place at

1:45 p.m. prior to the concert.

Above is Santa Claus carved out of ice on the day the Spring Road Business Association hosted their annual Sleigh Rides and Ice Carving event. Ice sculptures were on display up and down Spring Road in front of the merchants, but the warm weather didn’t allow them to last long.

Right: Kids look delighted as they watch this ice artist create sculptures and company logos to display in front of the various stores, restaurants and businesses up and down Spring Road. While visitors to the event enjoyed the nice weather, it didn’t help the ice creations stay around very long before they went the way of Frosty the Snowman.

York boys basketball team 14-1 overall after championship run over holidays Dukes have now won Jack Tosh Holiday Classic three times since 2012

Since Vince Doran became York’s boys basketball coach seven seasons ago, the Dukes and success in their own Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament have become synonymous with one another.

After winning the recent 2018 version of the tournament, York now has won the Jack Tosh three times during Doran’s seven-season tenure (2012, 2015 and 2018), finished second once (2013) and has never had a below .500 mark in the tournament, which expanded to a massive 32 teams in 2013.

York finished 3-1 in the tournament in 2017.

York’s recent 5-0 run in the tournament, which included a 55-52 win in the title game on New Year’s Eve against Downers Grove South, puts it at 14-1 overall heading into the second half of the season.

“We did great,” said Doran. “It was really exciting for our kids. We’re certainly excited about what we did in the Jack Tosh tournament. We’ve had success in the tournament. We

take a lot of pride in that tournament.

There is a lot of pride from the administration, parents, players, coaches and community members. A lot of people do a lot of great things to make the tournament a success. We had great crowds this year, probably the best crowds we’ve had in the last seven years.”

For his team, Doran said teamwork ruled the day over the holidays. “The key for us was playing unselfish basketball,” he said. “We had four guys all averaging 12 to 13 points per game. That’s a big deal at our level.

We have kids who are unselfish and share the ball. That was our key to success—playing unselfish at both ends of the floor.”

Doran noted York tied the tournament record for number of steals at 56 and averaged 11.1 steals per game there.

“Our defense was great,” he said.

“We had the fewest opposition points allowed in the tournament (average of 43.6 points per game allowed).

Our defense is getting better as the games go on and that’s a credit to our kids and how hard they play.”

Sam Walsh earned MVP honors in the tournament, while Nate Shockey was an all-tournament selection as well in the 32-team field.

“You could throw Erik Cohn and Nick Kosich in there as well for all-tournament consideration,” said

Doran. “You could put those four names in a hat and be justified with any two you choose. Any individual awards are team awards. These kids are so unselfish. They sacrifice individual stuff to get the greater team accomplishments.”

While most holiday tournaments have teams playing four games, the Tosh, with 32 teams, has a fifth game for those squads that make it to the final championship day.

“It’s a real grind playing five games in that short a timeframe,” said Doran. “Our kids are tough and they battled each game. They understand the importance of the games and they seized upon the opportunity. As the games became bigger and bigger, the kids stepped up. They played a great championship game that was very well-played by both sides. We had a great tournament overall.”

York heads into the new year sit-

ting at 3-0 in the tough West Suburban Conference Silver Division.

The Dukes returned to league play earlier in the week in Glen Ellyn against Glenbard West and will head to Oak Park to face Oak-Park River Forest Friday night.

“Our schedule is as tough as you are going to find,” said Doran. “We have some great challenges in front of us and the kids understand that.

Timothy Christian girls basketball team reflects on holiday experience Trojans brought 5-1 conference record into new year; Strube alltournament at Lisle

Timothy Christian girls basketball coach Mark Baumbach saw plenty of positives out of his squad at the recent Lisle Christmas tournament.

Timothy went 2-2 at Lisle and lost to Elgin St. Edward 47-37 in the consolation-championship finals.

“Unfortunately, that was the only game we did not play well in,” said Baumbach. “I don’t know if it was the fact we played four games in four days? We were just kind of flat.

It was tough. We were up two points at the half and had not played well. I thought we would really take off, but we came out flat in the second half.

That game was the only downside.”

Timothy opened the tournament with a loss to Antioch by a basket.

“That’s a game we probably should have won,” said Baumbach. “We were up by five points with a minute and a half left. We squandered it. They were a very good team and

ended up finishing third or fourth in the tournament. It was a good game, but we lost.”

The Trojans came back in the second game and avenged an earlier-season conference loss to Chicago Christian. “They had beaten us by 15 points earlier in the year,” said Baumbach. “This was probably our best game of the tournament. We played a full and complete four quarters of good basketball. We threw a junk defense at them and they didn’t respond to it. We played great from start to finish.”

Timothy then defeated Rockford Jefferson to advance to the consolation final. “Rockford was a good team as well. They spread us out using a four corners offense,” said Baumbach. “It was different—kind of like a delay offense. We were losing the whole game until the fourth quarter when we started hitting shots and our defense locked in and we won by 12. We went 2-2 there and played three really solid games. The last game was a clunker. Overall, I’m really pleased and was very happy that we had the chance to play for something there. Yes, it’s the conso-

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team looks at positives from holiday games Knights return to conference action against Aurora Central Catholic

While the IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team went 1-3 during its own IC Catholic Prep-Westmont tournament over the holidays, coach TJ Tyrrell is far from hitting the panic button with his younger crew.

“We were a little out of sync and made some mental mistakes, but our kids played hard,” he said. “Our kids are making progress. Sometimes losses teach more than wins.

With the losses you tend to reflect a little more and put more pressure on yourself. We’ve been able to dig into some films and talk to the guys and help them learn, grow and improve.

We don’t want to use it as an excuse anymore, but we’re a young group.

That can only last so long. Our goal is to get the guys playing their best basketball in February. With this tournament, we did not come out with the reward we wanted, but we saw a lot of areas where we can improve and we will improve.”

The Knights were 7-6 overall af-

ter the tournament.

“All the teams we played in the tournament brought pressure,” said Tyrrell. “That gave us some experience that you can’t replicate in practice. We saw some very athletic teams. The two Chicago Perspective schools and Chicago Legal Prep are all Chicago charter schools and they were athletic. We don’t usually see that, but we were able to see improvement in each game where we were breaking their pressure.”

Tyrrell noted IC Catholic Prep lost by three points to Elmwood Park, one point to Perspectives MSA and by 10 to Perspectives Leadership.

The Knights defeated Chicago Legal Prep by seven points.

Notable individual performances included Zach Jordan hitting for 22 points (5 three-pointers) in the Elmwood Park game. Dom Gaudio turned in a 15-point, three-assist effort, while Chauncey Lee had 14 points, six assists and seven rebounds. Ryan Wojtalewicz had nine points and six rebounds. “That’s three juniors and a sophomore there that contributed to our point totals,” said Tyrrell.

Tyrrell noted the team had 22 turnovers against Perspectives MSA. “And we lost by one point,” he said. “We have to look at the de-

cisions we made in that game and any one or two corrections could have been the difference. We need to cut down on turnovers.”

In that contest, Lee had 15 points.

Mike Carpanzano had 12 points, Jordan had 10 points and Wojtalewicz had five points and eight rebounds.

In the Legal Prep game, Jordan had 23 points and five rebounds, while Lee had nine points and three assists. Johnny Falduto, a sophomore, had nine points and four assists. “We did a better job cutting down our turnovers with 14 and we shot 50 percent from the 3-point line, which is very good,” said Tyrrell.

In the Perspectives Leadership game, Wojtalewicz had 18 points.

Jordan had 14 points, while Lee had 10 points and a team season-high nine assists. Sophomore Justin Hall had eight points and nine rebounds.

“Chauncey’s nine assists were the high on this team over the last two years, at least,” said Tyrrell.

Tyrrell said fixing a few issues here and there will help his squad in the second half of the season. “We told the kids if we had a couple better possessions and executed when we needed to, it would have been a different story in the tournament,”

he said. “It hurts to lose those games, but after processing the losses and digging into the film, there sure is a lot to be optimistic about.

We feel like we are in a good place with our team development.”

Tyrrell lauded Jordan’s recent offensive outputs. “Zach offensively has had a strong stretch the last several games,” he said. “You can see it with his confidence. He’s calling for the ball and looking for opportunities. That is a good sign to see in his development. It’s his first year on varsity.”

The coach also was impressed with Lee’s efforts in the tournament.

“Chauncey Lee is coming off that nine-assist game. We told him in film that it was a great job to have a nine-assist game, but we think he can get even more,” he said. “That’s what is exciting for him to where he can create even more and make the guys around him even better and it shows his development as a leader.”

Wojtalewicz continues to excel around the rim and as a leader. “We call him Big Woj,” said Tyrrell.

“He’s a great leader for us. He’s vocal and is a hard-worker. He hustles. He’s a great kid to coach.”

Tyrrell added IC Catholic Prep has been bolstered by the play of sophomores Falduto and Hall.

“Both are football players who are working their way into the lineup and have taken advantage of the minutes they have been given,” the coach remarked. “They are two of the hardest workers on the court.

Justin is under 5-10 and had nine rebounds off the bench in a game to lead the team. He puts in a lot of effort.”

The squad’s two lone seniors, Carpanzano and Ryan Asmussen, also have excelled in the leadership department.

“Their leadership has been very good,” said Tyrrell. “Ryan and Mike have done a good job mentoring the younger guys and taking them off to the side in practice and helping them understand concepts or plays. They have helped create a very good culture.”

IC Catholic Prep returned to action after the break and dropped a tough 44-43 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contest against Aurora Central Catholic.

ACC led 12-6 after the first quarter and 27-20 at halftime. The Knights trimmed the lead to 35-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

Wojtalewicz led the Knights with 13 points. Gaudio had 11 points (two 3-pointers), while Lee had nine points.

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team again was part of the tough 32-team Jack Tosh Holiday Classic hosted by York.

The Trojans, playing against larger-enrollment schools, finished up 2-2 at York. “We didn’t do too bad,” said Timothy coach Scott Plaisier.

“We lost to Wheaton North by 19 points, but it was a one-point game at the end of the third. We didn’t have a great start to the fourth. We beat St. Francis and we beat Elk Grove and that got us to the semifinals of the consolation bracket.

Plaisier said the Trojans must continue to work on facets such as rebounding and turnovers. “Things happened to us in the tournament like giving up offensive rebounds and committing turnovers and that came back to bite us,” he said. “It’s kind of been our Achilles’ heel a little bit. We turn it over too often, but in bad situations where we need a bucket after we get a couple of stops. We also need more consistency on the offensive glass. We’re giving up a lot of offensive rebounds.”

“I am optimistic,” said Plaisier.

“We are playing quite a bit better now than we were the first part of the season. We went 2-2 at York and had a nice win against Wheaton Academy before Christmas. They were 3-0 in the conference going into the game. We were able to play well against a good team. Hopefully all of that will help catapult us to play even more good basketball the second half of the conference season. We’ve been doing well. I still feel like we have a ways to go, but I

feel like we are making good strides, especially on the defensive end. We can still clean up some things such as valuing each offensive possession and getting better on the defensive glass and not give up so many offensive rebounds.”

Timothy Christian is in the midst of its Renew initiative this week that has the boys basketball team in Arizona to not only work on service projects, but play a pair of games against local teams. The Trojans were scheduled to play Gilbert Christian Academy and Rancho Solano earlier this week.

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team competitive during holiday road trip Coach James looking for even more progress in second half of season

The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team packed its bags and headed to the Bloomington-Normal area for the holidays.

The Knights went 1-3 in the smallschool girls’ portion of the well-regarded State Farm Holiday Classic.

“We went 1-3, but we were competitive in every game,” said Knights coach Kelsey James. “The first game against Rochester we lost by 11 and that was the most we lost by. A couple of our younger girls really stepped up. Our girls showed up to play every game wanting to compete and wanting to win. We’re looking forward to turning the page this year.”

James has seen improvements on both sides of the ball. “I would say our offense is looking better,” she said. “It’s not as consistent as

it needs to be, but when we run our offense we can score almost every time. We’ve had a couple of games where we have scored more than 50 points. Our defense still needs some improvement. We did hold one team to 30 points and one to 32 points. Our on-ball defense has gotten better, but our team defense needs some work still.”

Sophomore Alia Johnson continues to excel of late for the Knights.

“Alia is playing very well,” said James. “She’s finishing every game in double figures. Against Rockford Lutheran in the tournament she had a double-double in the first half and finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds.”

Jaida Smith also has been a key cog for IC Catholic Prep. “Jaida also had a good tournament,” said James.

“She played almost every minute of every game. She’s a real leader on the court. She has the most experience and that’s been helpful for her in being a leader.”

After the State Farm tournament, the Knights were 5-12 overall and brought a 1-4 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division mark into the new year.

“We are excited,” said James. “One of the things we talked about is, before Christmas we were figuring out rotations and who was playing well in what sports. In the tournament we figured out who is really stepping up.

Hopefully we are turning the page here and everybody is ready to win more games.”

Johnson is the team’s leading scorer with Claire Wagner a close second. Wagner is a freshman.

“Jaida Smith is the lone senior who sees significant playing time,” James pointed out. “We mostly play juniors who are new to the team this year, a freshman and a couple sophomores. Girls have had to make that adjustment from JV to varsity.”

The Knights face Rosary and Wheaton St. Francis this week in a pair of MSC Blue games.

Congressman Raja sworn into 116th Congress

Later voted to end government shutdown

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi was sworn into the 116th Congress on Thursday, Jan. 3 by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to serve his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“It was an honor to take the oath of office this afternoon to kick off the 116th Congress, and to begin my second term serving the people of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District,” he said. “After a successful first term, during which I led the historic modernization of our national Career and Technical Education (CTE) system, I am thrilled to continue pushing bold and innovative policies to strengthen our economy by expanding opportunities for students, small businesses, and working families.”

Then Krishnamoorthi called on Congress to work to solve the issue of the government shutdown.

“Today, as my colleagues and I took the oath of office, we were keenly aware of our immediate and pressing responsibility as Members of Congress – to reopen the government,” he said. “Later today, I will vote to end the destructive government shutdown for the sake of our citizens and the health of our economy. ‘A Walk Through My Mind’ Artwork of Gregory Albin Stall comes to Guild Gallery

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) will host A Walk Through My Mind, featuring original paintings, drawings and sculpture by EAG member Gregory Albin Stall. It will take place in the EAG Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave. It opened Sunday, Jan. 6 and will remain through Friday,
