For many boaters, boating is a family tradition – a way of life that includes shared experiences like the first time you take the steering wheel, catch a fish or trim a sail. Not only are moments like these fun for the whole family, but they also bring parents and kids closer together as the family becomes a “crew” through teamwork and shared responsibilities.
For every family member to join in and participate, however, you’ll naturally want to choose a type of boat that everyone can enjoy to the fullest potential.
Which is ideal for you and your family will depend on several factors: what type of boating does your family enjoy? How large does it need to be, and what accessories should it have? As you ask yourself these questions, remember that for most families, one of these seven boat types is likely ideal. Discover Boating says these are the best starter boats for families:
BOWRIDERS
If joyrides across the lake or bay, towing water toys, swimming at the beach, and
The top 7 BEST BOATS for families
generally kicking back on the water sounds like good times to you and your kids, a bowrider may be your perfect choice.
Bowriders are one of the most popular family boats, thanks to their high versatility, copious seating, and easy access to the water.
Bowriders are available in a vast range of sizes that match just about every budget, from small 16-foot runabouts to 30-plus-footers with every comfort feature imaginable ranging from enclosed head compartments (full bathrooms) to complete outdoor kitchens (though we call them galleys, on a boat). And while they may not be the ideal platform for activities like fishing or overnighting, bowriders can be used just about any waterborne activity you can dream up.
CABIN CRUISERS
Cabin cruisers are larger than many other boats and can cost quite a bit more. Still, they also expand your abilities to include adventures like visiting distant ports, weekending aboard, or even taking
a family vacation on the water. They’re more or less like having a mobile home that floats, and most come with everything you need for adventures that last days at a time.
FISH-AND-SKI BOATS
Fish-and-ski boats are designed to be just what their name infers. They have all the essential accouterments you need to chase those finned critters in the morning, then enjoy water skiing, wakeboarding, and similar watersports in the afternoon.
Most have a layout similar to that of a bowrider, but with the addition of fishy features like livewells, rod holders, and an electric trolling motor, plus tow-sports goodies like a ski-tow pylon and ski lockers.
Although some trade-offs must be made for a boat to be designed for multipurpose use (that livewell could be a drink cooler on a dedicated watersports boat, and that bow seating might be a casting deck on a boat meant purely for fishing). But on the whole,

the fish-and-ski is perfect for families that want to participate in both activities.
JET BOATS
Though the range of available choices is a bit less expansive when it comes to jet boats, and jet propulsion tends to be slightly less efficient than more traditional choices, they have one perk that many family boaters love: there’s no propeller.
Propeller injuries are exceedingly uncommon in any case, but the mere thought of doing away with the prop and instead propelling the boat with a powerful jet of water gives many parents invaluable peace of mind. Plus, jet boats have excellent handling, minimal draft, and all the other features and accessories found on runabouts.
PONTOON BOATS
Pontoon boats are incredibly popular, and it’s no wonder why: the stable, comfortable platform they provide is ideal for kicking back and lounging on the water. But don’t think for a moment that today’s pontoons can’t be downright thrilling, too.
Many come with potent engines that provide exciting performance and the ability to enjoy watersports. And while they may not be as apt at handling large waves as monohull boats, many of the larger pontoons and “tritoons” (boats with three pontoons instead of just two) are surprisingly capable in choppy waters.
SAILBOATS
Sailing is, of course, a very different experience than powerboating. Speeds are significantly reduced, and operating a sailboat is far more complex than pressing down a throttle and turning a steering wheel. Yet these “drawbacks” are, in some ways, what makes sailing so appealing –it takes skill and teamwork to sail a boat
from your dock to your destination, and every family member has a role to play. Plus, modern sailboats are available in all different sizes and comfort levels. Added bonus: since sailboats don’t require huge, powerful engines, compared to powerboats on a foot-to-foot basis, they generally cost significantly less.
WALKAROUNDS
Walkaround boats can be ideal for families that enjoy fishing and day cruising yet also want overnighting abilities. They usually have large, open aft cockpits where you can swing a rod or set a trolling spread, but the bow is enclosed and provides both sleeping accommodations and weather protection. And while it’s true that many types of fishing center consoles may be the most effective design, many angling families with young children – especially those who may go fishing in chilly or rainy conditions – choose walkarounds mainly because of that added protection.
CONCLUSION
In most cases, one of these seven boats will prove ideal for you and your waterloving family. Of course, there are other, more highly-specialized boats that you may find tempting.
If bass fishing is your true love, bass boats will be impossible to beat. Speed demons will naturally gravitate toward high-performance boats. And if wakesurfing is your sport of choice, then getting a dedicated ski boat/wake boat may be in the future.
But in every case, remember one thing: find a boat that makes you and your loved ones happy, and spending time on the water will draw your family closer together – and that’s one thing we can guarantee.

First-run flicks, contests, deals boost fun factor at McHenry Outdoor
Theater open seven days a week
By Cynthia Wolf CONTRIBUTOR
Weekly contests. mind-blowing entertainment even before the first film’s opening credits flicker across the screen. Weekly deals and free-popcorn opportunities for those in the know. Amazing new amenities.
Add to that a great lineup of first-run films and the chance to see them on the most iconic, giant screen around, and it’s shaping up to be one terrific summer at the McHenry Outdoor Theater. The sevendays-a-week part of the season began Memorial Day weekend, and owner Scott Dehn is excited about the season.
“Thanks to a great new partnership, audiences this summer are enjoying a vastly improved concession area – the newly named Bremer Team Tap House and Snack Bar,” Dehn said, adding that beer and wine are now available, as well as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, beer brats, a variety of candy, popcorn and more.
“It’s so nice in there now. I can’t wait for audiences to see it,” Dehn said.
The Bremer Team Keller Williams Success Realty and the Outdoor also are teaming up to offer Facebook fans weekly opportunities to win a carload pass that includes VIP parking.
“There will be up to four carload winners each week,” Dehn said. “Just keep an eye on both businesses’ Facebook pages to get in on the contests.”
Not only that, but those visiting the Outdoor on a Monday night can score free popcorn simply by mentioning the Bremer Team as they purchase their admission tickets at the theater’s box office. It’s located along Chapel Hill Road just south of the intersection with Lincoln Road, east of McHenry.
“It’s going to be such a fun summer,” Dehn said. “Even before the movies start, mind reader and mentalist Joe Diamond blows everyone’s minds with his hypnosis and amazing tricks beaming out from the big screen. Sometimes he is here live and sometimes it’s pre-recorded, but it is
always very entertaining.”
Kicking off the open-daily part of its season, the McHenry Outdoor showed Disney’s new “The Little Mermaid,” starring Halle Bailey, on Memorial Day weekend, debuting it the same day as its national release May 26. It was also the final weekend for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” Dehn said.
Highly anticipated films on the Outdoor’s agenda for this summer include new installments in several franchises,
including: “Spider-Man,” “Transformers,” “Indiana Jones,” “Mission: Impossible,”
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “The Fast and the Furious” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Expendables.”
Those ages 21 and older may buy beer or wine at two on-site locations, including the Bremer Team Tap House and Snack Bar as well as the Behind-the-Scenes Tap House, the latter of which is directly below the screen, in the tower itself. Theater merchandise, such as hats, T-shirts, discs
and more, can be purchased as well. Admission is $14 per adult, or $8 for children ages 3 to 11 as well as for military personnel and seniors age 60 and older. Children 2 and younger are admitted free. Premier parking (the front two rows) is $14 per vehicle.
On Tuesdays throughout the season, a $14-per-carload special is available.

Hook a kid on fishing
15 quick tips to make their day
As the weather warms, the desire to go fishing is undeniable. And if you love fishing, there’s only one thing more enjoyable than catching a big fish –watching a kid catch a fish.
This fishing season, the folks at Rapala fishing lures encourage adults to take a kid fishing. Why? Because kids represent the future of fishing. According to the American Sportfishing Association, kids who are introduced to fishing at an early age by a trusted adult are more likely to fish as an adult.
Here are 15 quick tips from the folks at Rapala on how you can get a kid hooked on fishing this year:
GET THEM ON GOOD BITES
The number one thing you can do to hook a kid on fishing, says legendary angler Al Lindner, is to get lots of bites for the child. “Taking kids fishing between the ages of 8 and 12 years old is a critical time. Try to get them on good bites. Their attention span is short. You will quickly know if fishing will be a part of their life in the future. They are either going to like it or not. But they have to get bites. I can’t say how important that is. You gotta get ‘em on a bite.”
START THEM ON BLUEGILLS AND SUNNIES
The easiest bites tend to be panfishbluegills, sunfish and bream. As your kids watch you catch bass, walleye and other gamefish, they’ll want new challenges. Keep panfish pliers handy to remove hooks from small panfish.
A SMALL FISH CAN BE A MONSTER FISH!
To a child, a small sunny can be a trophy. Don’t downplay a small fish. Every fish caught is a huge accomplishment.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Start your kid fishing with a single hook. They’re much easier to remove from fish. It could be a hook and a bobber or a
single hook soft bait, such as the Storm 360GT Searchbait. As your kids get more experience, let them graduate to a lure such as an Original Floating Rapala.
BRING THE SNACKS
Whatever your kids like for snacks, such as chips, cookies or fruit chewies, bring them! You’re sure to work up an appetite catching all those fish. And don’t forget the wipes for sticky, slimy little hands.
CREATE TRADITIONS
One of the best things about fishing with a kid is creating little traditions to which they can look forward in the future. Maybe it’s stopping for a donut on the way to the lake or giving fish pins whenever your kid catches a new species.
BRING A FRIEND
If your child has a good friend, invite them along on the fun, too. That kid may turn into a lifetime fishing buddy for your kid.
TAKE PICTURES
Don’t limit yourself to just fish photos! Take photos of the entire experiencestopping for donuts on the way to the water, eating snacks, collecting rocks or seashells, feeding the ducks. Turn your photos
into a photo book or create a slide show with music that the kids can watch later. When fish are caught make sure the most important people in your kid’s life see their fish photos.
KEEP IT SHORT
With younger kids, especially, avoid overdoing it. Start out with short trips - a couple hours at most, and if the fish just don’t seem to be cooperating, cut it short and go have an ice cream cone. Gradually increase your time out on the water and try different types of fishing approaches, such as fishing with soft baits or trolling with crankbaits.
WATCH THE WEATHER
Sometimes the weather doesn’t always cooperate. You may think the fishing is best on an overcast, windy day, but that may not be the case for kids. Instead, watch the weather and choose a warm, clear day and get out early when the fish are most likely to bite.
BRING A LIFE JACKET
It only takes a second and you may find a kid in the water. When on a boat, kids should always wear a life jacket that fits properly (in many states, it’s the law). Use caution when fishing from docks, piers and
shorelines, too.
AVOID SUNBURN
Make sure your kid is wearing a comfortable fishing cap and together, apply sunscreen to ears, noses and other exposed skin.
HANDLE FISH GENTLY
Fish are slimy, prickly and wiggly. With young kids, adults should handle the fish at first and let kids gently “pet” them before they’re released. As they become more experienced, show kids how to carefully land, hold and release their catches.
FISH WITH TOPWATER
Watching a fish explode on the surface for a lure gives young anglers an exciting visual that will keep them coming back for more. An X-Rap Pop or Skitter Pop are amazing baits to throw from shore or the dock for heart-stopping action on top of the water.
KEEP A FEW
If your kids want to try eating fish, keep a few fish and cook them up. Don’t make an entire meal out of it though, as eating fish is an acquired taste. Use a trusty batter recipe and serve with French fries.

Boat insurance basics may help you stay afloat
With the new boating season underway, boat owners should know the basics of different types of insurance coverage, review their current plan, and be sure they have the one that best meets their needs.
Some key areas of coverage to consider this season include:
SALVAGE SAVVY
No one wants to lose a boat, but if the worst happens, don’t assume salvage is part of your insurance policy.
According to the Boat Owners Association of The United States, some boat insurers will subtract the cost of salvage from the boat’s insured value. That means owners receive reduced funds for repairs, or less money back if the boat is a total loss. So seek out a policy that offers salvage coverage separate, but equal to the hull-value coverage.
CONSEQUENTIAL CONCERNS
Consequential damage is a tricky area of boat insurance. Data from BoatUS indicate that about half of all sinkings occur when the boat is docked and a small part below the waterline fails, often as a result of wear and tear, corrosion, or inadequate maintenance.
An insurance policy may not cover the failed part, but ensure that it covers “consequential damage,” such as major repairs or the cost of the boat in cases of total loss in the wake of a failed part.
This consequential damage coverage generally only applies to major or total losses. It’s typical, for example, to cover the immediate consequential damage resulting from any sinking, fire, explosion, demasting, collision or stranding.
RESCUE REVIEW
On-water towing assistance is an element of some boat insurance policies, but understand what type is right for your needs.
If you have only one boat, ask your insurance company whether it offers a towing service. Some companies, such as BoatUS, have their own towing fleet. Important questions for your insurance company: Who is providing the towing service, if not their own fleet? Is there 24-hour service? Will you have to pay out of pocket and seek reimbursement?
For more tips and information to optimize your boat insurance, visit BoatUS.com/insurance for quotes or contact marine insurance specialists at 800-283-2883.
Donations will generate triple the impact to restore Heron Creek Forest Preserve
Funds from a recent grant will be used to restore 100 acres at Heron Creek Forest Preserve in Lake Zurich.
The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation awarded the Lake County Forest Preserves a Community Stewardship Challenge Grant. The funding will be awarded to the Preservation Foundation, the charitable partner of the Forest Preserves.
“We are thankful to receive this funding for a highpriority project,” said Erika Stergos, executive director of the Preservation Foundation. “This grant is unique in that it will triple the impact of every gift made to the Preservation Foundation to help restore Heron Creek.”
ICECF will contribute $3 for every $1 the Preservation Foundation receives, up to $7,000. “This turns a $25 donation into a $100 impact,” Stergos said. Volunteering during monthly workdays at Heron Creek can also bring in additional dollars. “When we reach 400 volunteer
hours, ICECF will provide us an additional $4,000.” Donations will support removing invasive species at Heron Creek, a 242-acre preserve that features a playground and 2.5 miles of trails for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing. The grant will also aid collecting and replanting native seed and providing volunteers with tools and training.
Heron Creek offers rolling landscape of scenic woodlands, wetland and wide-open fields, creating exceptional wildlife habitat. “Considered a birdwatcher’s paradise, more than 116 species of birds have been observed here, including a resident population of waterfowl and herons—the site’s namesake,” Stergos said. The Indian Creek basin, which flows through Heron Creek, is an Advanced Identification Wetland, the highest wetland classification in Lake County. To donate and learn more, visit LCFPD.org/3to1

Blues, Brews & BBQ is now Bands, Brews & BBQ
More diverse lineup still boasts top local blues artists, adds alternative rock, country, R&B and more
By Cynthia Wolf CONTRIBUTOR
The McHenry Area Rotary’s chief annual fundraiser has a new name, new top sponsor and a special Sunday feature in the works that club members hope will draw record crowds for the three-day music, food and craft brew fest along the shore of McCullom Lake.
The decision was made going into this year to rename the fest from Blues, Brews & BBQ to Bands, Brews & BBQ. This year’s fest will be Aug. 18 to 20 at Petersen Park.
“The change reflects our desire to appeal to a more diverse, inclusive audience,” said Diana Mark, lineup chairwoman for the event. “But those who’ve been longtime fans should not fear that we’re ditching the blues. We’re not. With John Todd, Jimmy Nick, Ivy Ford and Kevin Purcell among those in the lineup, we aren’t straying far from our roots.”
Headlining opening night, on Friday, Aug. 18, after Todd and Nick will be Cadillac Groove, which performs a highenergy variety of southern rock, blues, funk, R&B, soul and more. The fest gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 18, with musical performances starting at 5 and concluding at 11 p.m.
Saturday’s lineup starts with the indomitable, globe-trotting blues kitten Ivy Ford at 4 p.m., followed by The Simple Remedy, billed as “classic Nashville sound mixed with Motown soul.” Taking the stage for the evening’s final performance on Aug. 19 will be Too Fighters Chicago, a Foo Fighters tribute band.
Sunday’s performers will be Wall of Denial, Kevin Purcell & the Nightburners and Two Beer Tommy. Wall of Denial is Chicago’s premier Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute band, while Purcell’s swamp boogie blues licks are well-loved by the fest’s diehard fans, and Two Beer Tommy will bring a country rock conclusion to the musical weekend.
“As the lineup shows, we’ve also returned to three bands each day, so at $10 for presale tickets and $15 at the gate, it’s a great value,” Mark said.
The entire fest is presented this year by the McHenry Outdoor Theater – Golden Age Cinemas, whose owner, Scott Dehn, has been a longtime supporter.
“The McHenry Area Rotary does a great job coordinating this festival for the community to enjoy – and to raise money for worthwhile causes,” Dehn said. “It’s something I’ve been impressed with for years, and I’m thrilled to take a lead role.”
Additionally, this summer’s fest features
a first-time Sunday all-performance sponsorship by Ray Auto Group and Jeeps on the Run, coupled with a Jeep show.
“We’re excited to partner with our longtime friends at Jeeps on the Run to present all of the great music that festgoers will enjoy at Bands, Brews & BBQ on Sunday,” said Ray Scarpelli Jr., owner of Ray Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Ray Chevrolet, both in Fox Lake. “It’s going to be a great time.”
Don Tonyan and Denis Buch, McHenry Area Rotarians and festival co-chairmen,
said sponsorships are a huge factor in the event’s success, dictating how much money the club can allocate to charitable grants in the coming year.
“We’re grateful to Scott Dehn, Ray Scarpelli, Mike Missak of Jeeps on the Run and others who’ve stepped forward, like Adams Auto Body and Volo Museum, to help us get a running start this year,” Tonyan said. “We could not pull this off without them.”
Buch said due to the past support of sponsors and fest-goers, the club has
provided nearly $300,000 in grants dating back to the fest’s start in 2012. Recent recipients have included Feed My Starving Children, the McHenry FISH Food Pantry, Kids in Need of McHenry County, Youth and Family Services of McHenry County and Rotary Secret Santa. For other information about the fest, visit www.mrbbb.com, find Bands, Brews & BBQ on Facebook or send an email to mchenryarearotary@gmail.com.
