Area police assist with arrest of kidnapper

Bond set at $3 million for suspect accused of abducting Wheaton College student

According to a release issued by DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Glen Ellyn Chief of Police Philip Norton, bond has been set for one of three men suspected in the kidnapping and armed robbery of a Wheaton College student that occurred about a week ago.

The release indicated that Abeet Ramos, 18, of 930 W. Spring Street, South Elgin, appeared in Bond Court on Friday, September 2, where Judge Alex McGimpsey set bond at $3 million with 10% to apply. Ramos has been charged with one count of Aggravated Kidnapping (Class X Felony), one count of Armed Robbery (Class X Felony) and one count of Aggravated Unlawful Restraint (Class 3 Felony).

It is alleged that on August 26, at about 9:50 a.m., the victim was walking in downtown Glen Ellyn when he was approached by a small SUV occupied by three men. Two men exited the vehicle, allegedly displayed a handgun and ordered the victim into the vehicle. It is further alleged that the three men then drove to several ATMs and withdrew more than $1,500 from the victim’s bank account using his ATM card. The men then allegedly drove to Chicago and at approximately 11:37 a.m., released the victim.

Upon his release, the victim ran to the nearest building and called 9-1-1. An investigation led by the Glen Ellyn Police Department, with assistance from other agencies including Villa Park, led to Ramos who was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 30.

Authorities are currently looking for Ramos’ accomplices, Jeremy Jones, 23, and an unnamed male juvenile. Berlin is asking that anyone who has any knowledge of these subjects should immediately contact the Glen Ellyn Police De-

partment at (630) 469-1187.

“I also want to give special thanks to [other area] police departments, whose officers provided valuable assistance to our detectives,” said Norton. “It is through cooperative relationships like this

that we can impact these intolerable violent acts.”

Ramos’ next court appearance is scheduled for September 13, in front of Judge John Kinsella.

Aug. 21 • Martique D. Barksdale, 34, of Villa Park, was arrested near St. Charles and Yale at around 8:59 p.m. on April 7 and charged with aggravated assault. The original complaint and arrest warrant was issued Aug. 21.

• Oleg T. Popov, 55, of Villa Park, was arrested in the 1600 block of S. Michigan at around 4:44 p.m. and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, battery, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a police officer.

• A 21-year-old Villa Park woman was arrested between 12:30 and 1 p.m. and charged with two counts of domestic battery and a violation of bail bond.

• Burglary to a vehicle and a stolen vehicle was reported in the 300 block of S. Yale. Police said that between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., an unknown suspect burglarized a vehicle that may have been left unsecured and stole an iPhone 4S, jewelry and an extra set of keys belonging to another vehicle, which also was stolen.

Aug. 20-Aug.21 A stolen vehicle was reported in the 800 block of Ellsworth. Police said that between 4 p.m. Aug. 20 and 2:38 p.m. Aug. 21, an unknown suspect stole a tractor and trailer that was parked unoccupied on the road. It was later recovered in Chicago.

Time to ponder summer storms, wind It started with an unexpected flash in the wee hours of the morning.

Not long after, a crack of thunder pulled me from sleep as the clouds opened up to share their aqualicious bounty with the earth.

The torrent began rapidly, and continued with a consistent barrage. I could hear it outside pelting the pavement. Bursts of wind swept through the open windows above the bed and my head. Once, but only once, a light spritz of raindrops blew in through the screen and hit my cheek. It was a pleasant sensation, on a warm night with the cool wind blowing through. I waited for a second spritz, anticipated and almost willed it, but none came.

I thought about getting up, to look outside at the downpour and watch for streaks of lightning shooting across the sky, but I stayed put.

The covers were cozy. I was warm and dry.

A strike of lightning lit the room for a moment illuminating a silhouette of my cat who had come into the room to make sure I was fully awake and to provide solace against the manifestations of the storm. Not more than a second later, lightning’s thunderous companion reverberated through the airwaves startling both

me and the feline. We were in the heat and heart of the squall. Instinctively the cat jumped up and nuzzled under the covers with her head on my husband’s arm. Thank goodness she was there to comfort me.

I closed my eyes, listening to the ruckus, under the cool sheets on the bed, under the cool sheets of rain falling outside – finding peace and contentment in the unyielding strength of Mother Nature. I’ve always loved a summer storm, especially in the middle of the night, when you can lie still and safe in the calmness of your bed under a sturdy roof while around you the world reacts with intense energy, strength and power.

It makes me feel small and insignificant, but somehow in a good way. There’s comfort in knowing Mother Nature is in control and can

cleanse the earth, water the garden, fill birdbaths and make mud puddles all in one fell swoop – it’s multitasking by the master. I guess there’s a certain amount of relief in realizing you are a tiny cog in the overall scheme of the universe, and power and control are in the hands of something much bigger and grander than yourself. It sort of takes the pressure off.

That, and it relieves you from the duty of having to water the garden this week.

The rain continued in a steady stream while I lay listening and thinking about everything and nothing the way one can do sometimes in the wee hours of the morning. I may have dozed off mid-storm (one can never be sure of dozing). When I checked the clock the storm had been brooding for over an hour. By

this time the thunder and lightning had abated, but the rain maintained a firm presence as night prepared to hand the reigns over to morning.

The sun rose and the rain finally subsided into something slightly more than a sprinkle and then, finally, into something slightly less.

The storm had passed and it was time to get up and get started with the day. As I did, I gave thanks – for summer storms, the wind, time to ponder, Mother Nature, comfy beds, pillows, rooftops, husbands and, of course, kitties that jump up in the night.

I love the local library I haven’t partaken of library services much in the past decade, but I feel the pull to return as I today type from the peace and quiet of a little study room here at my local library. My Internet at home has gone AWOL and I have work that needs the almighty iInternet, so to my trusty library I come with laptop in hand.

Many an evening was spent at the local library when I was in high school. My friends and I would meet to do homework together. We got shushed occasionally, but all in all it was a social hour where we spent just as much time doing algebra problems as talking about boys.

Sometimes we’d even see boys there. [Blush! Giggle!]

In college, many hours were spent at the library and all I remember is endless reading and paper writing. The library was not a thing of joy then.

The happy memories of libraries came back when I became a mommy. When my sons were preschoolers, we were regulars at the library for story time and checking out books for reading at home. But that fell away as they started school.

The times and technology changed. They got their info from the web and I got my books at the bookstore. When when one of my sons had to do a report for high school, the teacher made them go to the library and learn how to find a book on the book shelf. Remember card catalogs? The search system is on computer now, but my sons and

their classmates had never found a book in the library that way.

With my love of books, one would think I would frequent the library. Alas, I use Amazon instead.

It is quicker and easier to click than to get in my car and borrow. I think that will change as we move into our empty nester love nest.

With this recent move, I have donated bins upon bins upon bins (and more bins) of books that I have purchased to give to the library for their sale. I still have many more bins of books I am taking with me.

I will not know until we unpack if they will fit in our new space.

The library appeal is growing stronger. As I wander the shelves today, I see magazines. I love magazines too. I have piles and piles and piles.

The recycle man may get a hernia. Maybe I can get my mag fix at the library. It’s a thought.

They have movies here too. We use the Amazon FireTV stick so we don’t rent movies anymore and that too I had boxes and boxes and boxes of DVDs. They went like hot cakes at our sale.

Another treat is audio books. My husband listens to books on tape (as

I still call them) and he had boxes of Great Courses that we sold. The library could provide fodder for his time in the car.

The library has much to offer and it hasn’t gone anywhere. It was me who strayed. But I’m back.

Using the private room. Using the internet. And, when we get moved

and settled, using the books.

If I fall in love with a book that I want to keep and highlight and mark up, I will buy a copy.

Otherwise, it’s to the library I will go.

For now, I have work to do and I am grateful for the library. All I need now is a fridge with some

snacks.

College’s fall art exhibition opens Sept. 19

‘Revelations: Banner Paintings’ to feature works of Chicagoan Glen C. Davies

Elmhurst College will present “Revelations: Banner Paintings,” the work of painter and muralist Glen C. Davies, opening on September 19.

In the late 1960s as a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Davies fell under the spell of the great museums and Chicago’s homegrown “Imagist” pop art genre. These influences led

to Davies’ recurring art themes of figural fantasies, spiritual conflict and the journey toward enlightenment. Davies also spent some time traveling with circuses and carnivals, and came to see the canvas banners used to promote sideshow attractions as a compelling way to present his own art work.

He has been painting and displaying some of his work in the

banner format throughout the last 30 years.

“Revelations: Banner Paintings” can be viewed days and evenings from Monday, Sept. 19, through Friday, Nov. 11, in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

A reception with the artist will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. in the Founders

Lounge, with an artist talk at 5 p.m.

Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

ATHS names Ryan Cabildo 88’s Best for August Ryan Cabildo has been named as Addison Trail’s August recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his academic accomplishments. Cabildo, a senior, was recognized during the Aug. 29 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

When he graduates, Cabildo will have completed 11 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and 14 honors courses, receiving a grade of A in all of them.

“I’ve had Cabildo in AP language, and he is an exceptional student who excels in both reading and writing,” said English teacher Jessica Clark. “Cabildo provided enlightening discussion and set the bar high for all other students.

Aside from academics, he is extremely respectful and mature. As a teacher, I’m very lucky to have had him in class.”

Guidance Counselor Dana Marine agreed.

“Of all the students I have taught/counseled through the years, Cabildo ranks at the top,” Marine said. “Not only is Cabildo’s transcript flawless, but his AP exam and standardized test results are beyond remarkable. This year, Cabildo is enrolled in six AP classes, and I am in awe of his ability to balance a rigorous course schedule, music and co-curricular activities; somehow, he makes it all look easy. While I am impressed with Cabildo’s intelligence and academic achievements, I am most impressed with his character. Cabildo is a fine, humble young man and a balanced individual. He has

a warm personality and is respected by his peers and teachers.”

Cabildo excels in all areas of academics, but his favorite class has always been music.

“Cabildo is that student who exemplifies hard work, while maintaining grace under pressure,” said

Band Director Mark Corey. “He achieves at the highest level in all his academics, while balancing a busy life outside of the school day with involvement in theatre and musical projects. Cabildo is driven to succeed in all he does, but does so not because of the accolades it

will bring him, but because he believes in giving his very best in all he does.”

Last year, Cabildo represented Addison Trail at the Illinois Music Education Conference in the Jazz Ensemble, where he played with some of the best musicians in the

state, worked with professional directors and educators, and saw other great artists perform. Cabildo also is involved in other extracurricular activities, including National Honor Society, Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society, Theatre and Academic Team. He has reached out to the community as well through programs such as Feed My Starving Children and the PADS homeless shelter.

“I have had the honor of coaching Cabildo on the Academic Team, and I’m very impressed with how he conducts himself,” said Matt Bauers, AT Academic Team sponsor and math teacher.

“He is obviously highly intelligent, but he doesn’t just coast on innate talent. He works extremely hard, raises up those around him and shows integrity and determination in the face of competition. Cabildo leads by example and improves the morale of his teammates (and coaches) with his positive attitude and sense of humor. He is a true leader and an excellent choice to represent Addison Trail as District 88’s Best.”

Cabildo’s future plans include going to college, preferably at Stanford University, Harvard University or Yale University. Yale is Cabildo’s top choice, as it offers him an opportunity to earn a double major in music theory and engineering.

As of now, Cabildo’s end goal is to be a composer of music.

ATHS frosh visit University of Wis. at Madison At the beginning of each school year, Addison Trail takes freshmen on college visits to University of Wisconsin-Madison. The first two trips of the 2016-17 school year took place on Aug. 30 and 31, and the next visits will be on Sept. 20, 21 and 22.

The goal is to “begin with the end in mind” and expose first-year high school students to a post-secondaryeducation campus. About 90 percent of the class of 2020 will participate in a field trip to University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Along with learning about the

campus and the social and academic activities available, students also receive information about the history of the university and the admission process. This is the eleventh year Addison Trail freshmen have gone to University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Willowbrook football team defeats Proviso West Addison Trail football team falls to Oak Park-River Forest

The Willowbrook football team got its first win of the season in the form of a 35-0 West Suburban Conference crossover victory over Proviso West.

The win moves the Warriors to 1-1 overall on the season. Willowbrook opened the season with a loss on the road to Grayslake North.

The Warriors open WSC Gold Division play Friday on the road with the annual District 88 game against Addison Trail (1-1).

Bobby Daniels had 54 passing yards, while Michael Ruffolo had a 20-yard touchdown pass to Stevan Jones. Conrad also caught two passes for 50 yards. Jones kicked both extra points.

On defense, Carlos Rosado had 10 tackles, while Juan Bracamontes had seven tackles and three tackles for loss. Jack Kent also had seven tackles. Conrad, Nick DiBernardo, Andrew Felix and Ryan Sheehan each had a tackle for loss.

Fenton boys golf The Fenton boys golf team will be led this season by returning golfers Andrew Hill (junior) and Nik Fischer (sophomore).

“We have a young team with 10 sophomores,” said Fenton coach Rick Johnson. “They get along great. The sophomores play together all year on the basketball and baseball team.”

Johnson has been pleased with the performances of Hill, Marcus Astorga and Fischer. “They all are playing well this year,” he said.

The Fenton girls volleyball team has plenty to celebrate.

The Bison got off to a strong 6-2 overall start over its first eight matches. In recent results, Fenton defeated Proviso West 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 and lost a conference game to IC Catholic Prep by scores of 25-20, 25-19.

At the Bison Blast-Off tournament, Fenton finished second. The Bison defeated Waukegan, North Chicago, St. Joseph and Ridgewood and lost to Deerfield (25-12, 25-20) in the championship match.

Through eight matches, Paulina Milanowski was leading the team with 26 service aces, while Ashley Lira had 22. Milanowski was tops in kills with 40. Natalia Skop had 31. Milanowski had 51 assists, while McKenzie Miller had 39. Melinda Boehm and Vicky Krzyskkowski were the team leaders in blocks, while Lira was leading the team in digs with 26. Skop had 25.

“Offensively, we are doing a very good job of moving the ball around and getting kills from many different people,” Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer said. “We are making sure our opponents can’t focus in on one hitter.

Defensively, our serve-receive is improving. Also, our middles are doing a very nice job of getting a touch on the ball at the net.”

Kleidorfer cited recent strong play from Milanowski and sophomore setter Miller. “Paulina has stood out up to this point,” she said. “She leads us in aces, kills and assists. She also is our team leader and someone that everyone on the team looks to when we need that big point. Her hitting has gone to a new level this year. Mackenzie also has elevated her game and has done a great job getting the ball to the hitters.”

Kleidorfer said the team is hard at work on its passing. “We always can get better with our passing,” she said.

“We know we need to keep improving that aspect so we can beat some of the

better teams.”

Overall, the coach likes the way her team has started out of the gates. “We are pretty happy with the way it has started,” said Kleidorfer. “We would have really liked to win the tournament, but Deerfield outplayed us in that match. The girls re working hard and realize they have the team this year to accomplish some really great things.”

Cross-country team looking to take next step

Addison Trail boys cross-country coach Brad Donaldson has high hopes for his 2016 squad.

“If all the kids stay healthy and run where they are capable of, we should have one of the better teams we’ve had,” he said.

Back for the Blazers are returning sectional qualifier Demetrio Cervantes (senior), Julio Cervantes (senior), along with juniors Nick Czorniak and Danny Bueno, who were part of Addison Trail’s postseason roster last year. Sophmore Ricardo Arreguin is a key newcomer to the group.

“We have a large group of kids that is new to cross country, so we will have a lot of kids to pull from,” said Donaldson. “Their attitudes are very positive. The kids are excited as they go through the season and learn what the sport is all about.”

Donaldson lauded the work Arreguin has put in. “Ricardo has really improved since last year,” he said.

“He put in a ton of miles over the summer and likely will challenge for a varsity spot.”

Donaldson is hopeful his team can be a Top 3 finisher in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division.

“We’re looking to be middle of the pack and we hope to challenge for second or third place,” he said.

Addison Trail competed in a race last weekend at Fenton and will head to Peoria for another invitational Saturday.

The Addison Trail girls tennis team has momentum on its side after winning three recent dual matches.

The Blazers scored wins over Plainfield Central (5-2), Glenbard North (6-1) and Riverside-Brookfield (5-2). It was the first time in coach Justin Hegner’s career that Addison Trail beat R-B. “We are off to the best start since I have taken over coaching (11

years),” said Hegner. “It usually takes us half the season to get our feet under us and be mentally tough to win close matches. This year we have started off by winning most of our close matches with other teams, so the mental focus is already apparent.”

Addison Trail is coming off a 2015 season where it went 6-10 and 2-4 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action (fifth place).

Back for the Blazers is junior

Marina Tollko, who is playing her second year at No. 1 singles. Also back is returning all-conference player Pamela Kobeszko (No. 2 singles). Kobeszko was an all-conference performer at No. 1 doubles last year. Seniors Gianna Sarli and Jessica Bach are back and will play No. 1 doubles this season. Sarli was all-conference at No. 3 doubles last season. Senior Meryem Ahmed also returns and is playing No. 2 doubles.

IC Catholic girls volleyball team splits pair of matches

The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team had some good news and bad news in its first two contests of the season.

The good news was a 22-25 259, 25-22 non-conference win over Lisle. Giana Curran had 21 digs and seven aces, while Tess Reardon had 11 kills, seven assists and 14 digs.

Katie Hendricks and Maya Stovall each had six kills, while Nailah Landon had three kills and one block.

“I liked our serving against Lisle,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore. “We served very well and our ball control was really good.

Serving and passing normally are our strengths. We had a strong showing in those areas. We kind of knew early on that we would struggle with attacking efficiency. We had a few blocks and that has been a point of emphasis and something we need to keep working on. The ability of putting the ball down has been a struggle. It was a struggle against Lisle and against Aurora Central.”

IC Catholic Prep lost 25-22, 32-30 to Aurora Central Catholic in conference play. Reardon had 11 kills, five

assists and eight digs. Hendricks had five kills, while Kaitlyn Falduto had three aces and eight digs. Curran had 12 sigs and one ace.

“What really got us against Aurora Central Catholic was serving.

It was a little off,” said D’Amore.

“When things you count on do well, you have that consistency. When things are a little off, it exasperates the rest of it. The wheels kind of fell off for us serving. We struggled with ball control, but got it back together.

We had a lot of blocking errors and a lot of unforced errors. If you have that and you are not as efficient as you need to be, offensively it becomes a struggle.”

D’Amore had good things to say about her senior class early in the season. “The seniors are stepping up,” she said. “Tess is setting and playing outside and Giana is our libero. Those two have been good floor leaders. Katie Hendricks is doing a good job for us in the front row.

Those three are the ones we will lean on all season.”

The new partners seem to be doing well quickly this year. I like that this group comes out and enjoys the sport of tennis, but they also know when it is time to focus and play hard.”

Hegner would like to see his team move up the conference standings.

“We’re always hoping to improve from last year, but we’re hoping to move up a couple positions compared to last year when we finished fifth,” he said. “With the way we already are focused, I think that is a reachable goal. We want to do well in conference, but also outside conference. A few girls always have wanted to make it to state, so hopefully with the more mature and mentally focused team, that will be possible.”
