History and background The Forest Preserve District acquired the former Elmhurst Country Club in 1985, and the original 50,000-square-foot clubhouse at this location was destroyed by fire in 2009. After the fire, there was a public call to immediately replace the clubhouse, but Forest Preserve District Executive Director Ed Stevenson said he first wanted to address chronic flooding problems, improve environmental conditions, and address aging infrastructure on the property’s landscape before committing to replacing a building.

The Preserve at Oak Meadows underwent a major two-year restoration project to improve stormwater management and water quality for Salt Creek, enhance habitat for fish and other aquatic species, and create a premier 18-hole public golf destination. It reopened for a brief preview season in late summer 2017 and had a full grand-opening season in 2018.

The property was reconfigured to reduce flooding in nearby communities by holding an additional 20 million gallons of stormwater from Salt Creek during flood events, while minimizing flood damage to the course. Only 15% of the 288 acres is dedicated to fairways, greens and teeing areas, and the number of holes was reduced from 27 to 18. In addition, the project created 25 acres of wetlands and 43 acres of riparian habitat and restored 13 acres along the Salt Creek corridor to improve water quality and plant and animal diversity.

DuPage Forest Preserve District commissioners unanimously approved building a public clubhouse and visitor center at The Preserve at Oak Meadows in Addison.

Commissioners approved hiring Pepper Construction Company as the construction manager to deliver the project for a “guaranteed maximum price contract” of $12.6 million or less. Work is scheduled to begin in September 2019 and be completed

by September 2020.

The one-story public clubhouse will feature an 18,018-square-foot building with a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating areas, a multipurpose event room with an outdoor terrace, a pro shop, locker rooms, kitchen and office space.

The clubhouse design is a reinterpretation of midcentury modern architecture with angled flat roofs, transition spaces to blend the inside and outside, and large expanses of windows to feature views of the course.

Environmentally friendly features of the building include a green roof, bird-safe glass to reduce the number of birds flying into windows, sustainably sourced wood, LED light systems, and compliance with ComEd’s energy efficiency program.

As part of the project, commissioners approved installing a solar power system on the cart storage building at The Preserve at Oak Meadows. The solar arrays will produce enough electricity to fully power the facility’s 75 golf carts, making The Preserve the first golf course in the U.S. with a fully solar-powered golf cart fleet.

No injuries in vacant house fire Deemed unsafe to enter, structure allowed to burn

An empty house at Mayfair and Forest View in Addison burned to the ground on Friday, Aug. 30. Emergency crews from the Addison Fire Protection District (AFPD), along with mutual aid firefighters from Bensenville, Elmhurst, Itasca and Wood Dale were on the scene around 6:40 p.m.

According to an AFPD release, initial responders found the stairs and floors of the vacant home had failed,

and it was unsafe to enter the structure to fight the fire. The decision was made on the scene to allow the house to burn until the roof collapsed. Crews shut down power to the area for a short time and also blockaded the streets and nearby residences while the fire burned.

Once the roof collapsed, firefighters used aerial water streams to flood the structure and extinguish the conflagration.

The fire was finally put out at 10:05

p.m., after nearly 3 1/2 hours.

The cause of the blaze was unknown, but an investigation began immediately after the fire was extinguished.

AFPD did not release any further information related to the investigation or possible cause as of press time.

“Finished the night with no firefighter or civilian injuries,” the release read.

“Thanks to Northlake, Westmont and Elk Grove for protecting our fire district while we were committed at this fire.”

The mine, located in Cherry about 50 miles northeast of Peoria, was considered to be secure when it opened in 1905. But on Nov. 13, 1909, an electric outage prompted miners to light kerosene lanterns and torches to continue to pull coal from the deep mine.

Shortly after noon, embers from a wall lantern dropped below into a coal car filled with hay for mules.

Flames spread to support timbers and quickly raced through the mine.

Of 490 miners, 200 men and boys managed to scramble out. Meanwhile, a large shaft fan was reversed in an attempt to blow out the fire, but only succeeded in spreading the blaze. The mine’s two shafts were shut to smother the fire, but the tactic cut off oxygen to miners and allowed black damp (a suffocating mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen) to build up in the mine.

Twelve volunteers went down a shaft in a lift to attempt a rescue. All died.

Eight days after the ordeal began, 21 survivors were brought to the surface, though two later died. In the end, 259 men and boys died.

Several families lost two or more relatives. Among the dead were a father-son team, the Kralls, whose bodies were found locked in an embrace.

The disaster also claimed the lives of brothers John, Morrison, David and James Love, immigrants from Scotland. A surviving Love brother, William, later married the widow of one of the men who died while trying to rescue the trapped miners.

However, at the Southern Illinois Coal Co.’s strip mine near Herrin, workers kept working to pull coal from the earth but not ship it out.

In mid-June, however, the owner decided to violate the agreement and ship coal. When the union workers refused, he fired them and called in replacements from Chicago — 50 men unaware that they had been hired as strikebreakers in an area where 90 percent of the workforce carried a union card.

On June 21, shots rang out at the mine, though accounts differ as to who pulled the trigger first. Regardless, soon one strikebreaker and two strikers were dead, with a third seriously wounded. Union men from the entire region thundered to the mine, en route grabbing guns and ammunition from shops.

Realizing their outnumbered predicament, the strikebreakers agreed to stop work in exchange for safe passage out. On the morning of June 22, they came out of the mine, and union workers marched them toward town, along the way killing the mine’s one-legged superintendent.

After several miles of walking, the group reached a barb-wire fence.

Strikers lined up the scabs against the fence and told them to run for their lives. As they clawed to climb the fence, strikers opened fire, killing and wounding many.

The final death toll was 23. In the aftermath, prosecutors obtained 214 indictments. But when the first few resulted in acquittals by sympathetic local juries, the rest were dropped.

The nation reacted to the massacre with disgust. President Warren Harding characterized it as a “shocking crime, barbarity, butchery, rot and madness.”

Army Specialist gets 75 years for sexually assaulting Oak Brook girl DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced last week that a former Army Specialist has been sentenced to 75 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for sexually assaulting a young female.

The sentence, which was handed down by Judge Liam Brennan, follows a jury trial in which the jury found Andrew Hui, 40, guilty of 12 counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault (Class X Felony) and one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 2 Felony). He has been held in custody since his May, 2015 arrest on bond of $750,000.

Last week’s sentence stems from allegations that from April, 2011 through June, 2013, Hui sexually assaulted his victim on multiple occasions while he was staying with the victim’s family at her home in Oak Brook. The abuse came to light when the victim alerted her father what Hui

had done to her. Her father then contacted the Oak Brook Police Department who then contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center.

“For more than two years, Andrew Hui repeatedly sexually assaulted his young victim just to satisfy his own sick sexual desires,” Berlin said.

“What is particularly disturbing in this case is that Mr. Hui was an Army Specialist and as such was trusted by the victim’s family and looked up to and admired by his victim. He repaid the trust and admiration placed in him by sexually assaulting his young victim time and time again.”

On the Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault charges, Hui received 72 years to be served at 85%. On the Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse charge, he will be required to serve three years of the sentence at 50%. The sentences will be served consecutively resulting in the 75-year sentence.

It is now illegal in Illinois to smoke in a vehicle in which a minor child is present.

Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Aug. 23 signed House Bill 2276 into law making it a petty offense to smoke in a vehicle in which there are one or more children under age 18. That can result in a fine of up to $100 for a first violation, and up to $250 for each subsequent violation.

Law enforcement officers are not allowed to issue tickets solely for violating the law, but they can issue tickets if they pull a vehicle over for some other violation. The law also does not apply if the person smoking is a minor who is the sole occupant of the vehicle.

If a minor is present in the vehicle, however, citations can be issued to anyone in the vehicle who is smoking, including the driver and any other passenger.

Earlier this year, Pritzker signed another bill into law, commonly known as “Tobacco 21,” which makes it ille-

gal to sell or provide tobacco products to anyone younger than 21. That new law, however, removed an earlier prohibition against minors possessing or using tobacco products.

That means minors cannot be charged with an offense solely for smoking. But if they smoke in a vehicle in which other minors are present, they could be cited for violating the new law banning smoking around minors in vehicles.

Proponents of the new law say it’s intended to reduce children’s exposure to secondhand smoke.

For purposes of the law, the word “smoke” means, “to inhale, exhale, burn or carry a lighted cigarette, cigar, pipe, weed, plant, regulated narcotic, or other combustible substance.” The word “vehicle” does not include motorcycles.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Jonathan Carrol, D-Northbrook, and Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield.

It passed the Senate by a vote of 4210 on May 29. It passed the House by a vote of 97-14 on June 1.

Pro-life law firm says Raoul, other AGs, should ‘stay in their own lane’ An anti-abortion law firm official said Aug. 26 that Attorney General Kwame Raoul was “interfering” in Indiana’s health care regulation system when he filed a court document in support of an abortion facility trying to open there.

The state of Indiana denied Whole Woman’s Health Alliance’s license application to open a medication abortion clinic in part because the organization did not disclose information about its affiliates in other states. Fourteen other attorneys general signed on to the document Raoul submitted to the court in favor of the Alliance.

Peter Breen, vice president and senior counsel for the Thomas More Society, said officials in South Bend, Ind., the selected site of the facility, have a “right to ensure that all businesses operate in a safe manner.” He is a former state representative from Lombard, and was the minority floor leader in the previous General Assembly.

“This affront is akin to a group of health inspectors from around the country trying to block Chicago from closing a restaurant for code violations,” Breen said in a news release Aug. 26.

Minors across Illinois will soon have easy access to EpiPens, thanks to a new law supported by State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton.

Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) advocated for House Bill 3435, which requires certain insurers to cover medically necessary epinephrine injectors for minors – the fast-acting treatments for severe allergic reactions.

“It’s our duty to take the necessary steps to ensure this life saving drug is affordable and easily accessible to children in Illinois,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Children with serious allergies should not have to go without a vital epinephrine injector simply because they cannot afford one.”

Epinephrine injectors – commonly known by the specific brand name EpiPen – deliver the life-saving drug epinephrine to individuals experiencing a severe allergic reaction. Epinephrine works by narrowing blood vessels and opening lung airways, reversing the symptoms of a potentially fatal allergic reaction.

This measure requires certain private insurance policies to cover medically necessary epinephrine injectors for those under 18 years of age.

“Families across our district rely on this essential medicine to keep their children safe,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This small step can help us save lives.”

House Bill 3435 was signed earlier this month and goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020.

ly denying this care in support of an ideological agenda does not advance care for residents in any state.”

Raoul’s filing of the court document comes after Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the Reproductive Health Act into law. It ensures no level of government in Illinois can restrict access to a woman’s or man’s access to pregnancy care, birth control, abortion procedures or other related services or benefits.

The statute makes Illinois an “aberration in the Midwest,” Breen said.

“Not content with setting itself up to be America’s ‘abortion destination,’ its attorney general has now led a group of East and West Coast states in attacking our neighbors in Indiana for their attempt to safeguard their women and children,” he added.

Joining Illinois in the court filing are the attorneys general of California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington.

New law serves to advocate for Alzheimer caregivers Illinois Alzheimer’s caregivers and patients will now have an advocate within the Illinois Department of Public Health to oversee the state’s Alzheimer’s efforts.

Senate Bill 1726 creates the position of Dementia Coordinator in the Department of Public Health to oversee the implementation of the Illinois Alzheimer’s Disease State Plan, was signed into law on Monday.

“As someone who cared for a husband and mother with Alzheimer’s disease, I know how impossible it can seem,” Glowiak Hilton said.

“Under the leadership of a statewide Dementia Coordinator, those living and caring for those with Alzheimer’s will have an advocate to fight for state policies that will improve their level of care.”

Senate Bill 1726 is an initiative

of the Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Illinois State Plan was established in January 2014 and is required to be updated every three years.

Nationally, the cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia was estimated at nearly $236 billion in 2016, and is expected to increase to $1.1 tril-

lion in 2019 dollars by mid-century.

Medicare and Medicaid cover about 68 percent of the total health care and long-term payments. In 2016, the Medicaid cost of caring for people with Alzheimer’s in Illinois was $1.5 billion.

The position was created because previously the state plan could not be implemented by IDPH due to lack of staff and other resources.

“This new position would ensure our state is actively engaged in the fight against dementia,” Glowiak Hilton said.

An equivalent position exists in state government in Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Puerto Rico.

Measure to fight human trafficking now law Illinois now has a new law in place to help some of the people who have the most power to fight one of the fastest-growing criminal activities in the world: Hospitality workers.

Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) championed House Bill 3101, which would require hotels and motels to train employees to recognize the signs of human trafficking and know what to do when reporting it to authorities. It was signed into law on Friday.

“This new law will arm hospitality workers with the tools to spot and report human trafficking,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Just like we have discovered that teachers or hairdressers can be the ones who most readily spot the telltale signs of domestic violence, we’re learning that hotel employees might be the ones who spot human trafficking. This new training will give hospitality workers the knowledge and build the confidence to be able to identify signs of human traf-

ficking and act quickly to do the right thing.”

Under the new law, the Illinois Department of Human Services will develop a human trafficking recognition training program for hotel and motel employees.

Human trafficking is now the second-largest criminal activity in the world and the fastest-growing. The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally.

“It’s crucial that we take the lessons learned by other states and implement them in Illinois to help put a stop to this criminal activity,” Glowiak Hilton said.

House Bill 3101 goes into effect immediately. The Department of Human Services has until July 1, 2020 to develop and publish the human recognition training program.

I have lived in Addison for 40 years and have enjoyed and cherished those many years.

The people in our location (Kings Point and Presidential Estates) have always maintained their homes.

In the last few years, I have noticed a drastic change in our neighborhood. Many of the homes in the

area are becoming rental homes.

The tenants living in those homes do NOT apply the same standards as a homeowner does. They see a rental space, not a home. The landlords seem to feel the same way, they only see income as their main goal.

If this trend continues, Addison will lose its attractiveness. People will say, it’s a nice place to visit, but I would not want to live there.

And this year’s senior class?

They weren’t around to watch the TV coverage of 9/11. Most of them weren’t born yet. They were but belly bumps – quite literally.

On that day that we will remember like people before us remembered the end of the Civil War, both World Wars, Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, the assassination of JFK, the landing on the moon and any other day that lives on in infamy in our history and in our minds.

On September 11, 2001, I had a bump of my own, a budding life ready to make his presence known to the world. As I stood in my kitchen and watched the first plane crash into the first tower I thought it must be a horrible accident – an individual pilot who had lost his way.

What else could it be?

And then the second plane hit and I knew we were in the midst of something much more horrible than an accident. My heart sunk into my stomach. Or it would have if there had been any stomach left to sink into.

I held my bulging belly and was pulled in different directions. On the one hand, we were experiencing terror beyond belief. On the other, I had a life to nurture. I had optimism growing inside me. He, and those amongst him, had to be born to make the world right again.

But first, he had to learn to walk.

And later go to kindergarten. And then middle school and high school.

And now, he, and those in his class are anticipating graduation come spring. I’m not sure they realize the significance of their status.

This group of seniors (for the most part) is the first to be born after the tragedy of 9/11. They’ve never known 9/11 to be simply random numbers. They are the first to grow up in a nation influenced fully by September 11, 2001 – yet they no nothing of it firsthand.

It is our job to tell them.

And it is our job to help them move forward in ways that change the world in positive ways.

As I stood in my kitchen, belly bulging 17-plus years ago, I feared for the future. I didn’t know how

And despite all my mom worries about driving too fast, making the wrong choices, not making the team, underperforming on standardized tests, getting into the right college, online bullying, carbon footprints and the reality of big foot, we’ve made it this far.

Illinois Lottery expands online, mobile app ticket offerings

The Illinois Lottery is expanding the options players have to buy certain tickets without leaving the house after the General Assembly passed a law allowing them to do so earlier this year.

House Bill 3661, which became law on June 28, allowed the Lottery to sell single-draw tickets for the Pick 3, Pick 4 and Lucky Day draw games on Illinoislottery.com and their Illinois Lottery Official Mobile App. Previously, these games were available only through a subscription of a minimum of one week’s worth of tickets.

These games join Mega Millions, Powerball and Lotto as available for single-draw sales.

Jason Schaumburg, communications director for the Illinois Lottery, said the Lottery expects the new features to contribute almost 12 percent of the department’s sales growth target for the year.

“The ability to purchase single-draw tickets for Pick 3, Pick 4 and Lucky Day Lotto was introduced earlier this month (Aug.12),” he said in an email. “Average daily sales across the three games is up 20 percent compared to the three weeks before single draw

Schaumburg said total sales for the Lottery were $2.93 billion in fiscal year 2018 and $2.84 billion in fiscal year 2017, the last two audited fiscal years. In those fiscal years, the Lottery transferred $722.5 million and $732.7 million to state coffers respectively, with the rest of the money going to pay prizes to players, commissions to retailers and operational expenses.

Schaumburg said the profit margin is slightly higher for online sales as opposed to retail sales because the bank fees the state pays for online sales are cheaper than the commissions paid to retailers, but he did not expect retailers to be negatively affected by the expansion of the online platform.

Retailers receive a 5 percent commission on all tickets sold and a 1 percent winning-ticket selling bonus for all winning tickets sold with a value of $1,000 or greater. They also receive a 1 percent bonus for any prizes they pay to a player in-store up to $600.

Schaumburg said those commissions and bonuses do not apply if a ticket is sold online because the transaction did not occur in a store.

Rob Karr, president of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, said the organization didn’t view the online expansion as one that would sap business from storefronts, because the online sales are expected to reach different players and do not apply to instant games.

Schaumburg agreed and said the

Lottery has not seen retail sales falter because of online offerings.

“We haven’t seen that to be the case. The Lottery’s digital program is meant to compliment the retail program,” he said. “Efforts to grow the business online are rooted in the desire to offer players (new and old) an additional way to engage with us, not in converting existing players from retail players to digital players.”

While instant game tickets will still be available only at participating retailers, players can use their mobile app to scan an instant ticket to see if it’s a winner.

According to a news release, players have executed more than 1.5 million ticket scans through the mobile app since it was launched in February.

New gun dealer regulations proposed in Illinois

Following through on a new law that Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed in January, the Illinois State Police published a set of proposed new regulations requiring gun dealers in Illinois to comply with stricter security and recordkeeping requirements.

That law, however, is being challenged in Sangamon County Circuit Court by the Illinois State Rifle Association and a number of gun dealers in the state who argue it’s an unconstitutional infringement on their right to keep and bear arms.

Known as the Firearms Dealer License Certification Act, the state law requires anyone who holds a federal

firearms license to also obtain a state “certificate of license” and comply with state regulations.

Those proposed new regulations were published in the Illinois Register on Aug. 23, opening a 45-day public comment period. After that, ISP may amend the proposed rules based on the feedback it receives.

It then must publish a second notice and forward the proposals to the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, or JCAR. That opens another 45day comment period, after which JCAR can either approve the rules for adoption or request additional changes.

Under the proposed new rules,

starting Jan. 2, 2020, all licensed and certified gun dealers who maintain an inventory will be required to have electronic security alarms that notify local law enforcement of any unauthorized intrusion into areas where firearms are kept and maintained.

Also beginning in 2020, all licensed and certified dealers operating retail locations must implement electronic record systems to track their changing inventory. That means recording all sales and purchases within 24 hours of the transaction and recording shipments from manufacturers or wholesalers within 24 hours of unpacking the shipment.

A hearing in that lawsuit is scheduled for Sept. 5.

Warriors kick off season with a loss to Providence Catholic Late drive ends with a turnover

The Willowbrook football team, which posted a perfect regular-season record last year, opened the 2019 season with Friday night’s 14-7 loss to Providence Catholic in front of a packed stadium in Villa Park.

The Warriors scored their only touchdown on a 13-yard run by senior quarterback Sam Tumilty in the second period. Providence Catholic tied the game early in the third quarter. The visiting Celtics scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown with about 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Tumilty and senior receiver Everett Stubblefield connected on a 47-yard pass play late in the fourth quarter to give the Warriors’ a firstand-goal opportunity with less than two minutes to play. Moments later, the Celtics intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned the ball to midfield. Providence Catholic then made one first down and proceeded to run out the clock.

The Warriors, who have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the IHSA state playoffs in each of the last three seasons, posted a perfect 9-0 record last season. They finished the year with an overall record of 11-1. Willowbrook won two playoff games before losing an overtime thriller at Batavia in the IHSA Class 7A quarterfinals.

Willowbrook kicked off the 2018 season with a convincing win over Chicago’s Curie Metro High School. The Warriors played their 2019 opener against a much stronger program. Providence Catholic of New Lenox has won 10 IHSA state football championships. The Celtics won their most recent state title in 2014, when they captured the 7A trophy. Providence Catholic lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs last year.

“We couldn’t’ get much going all night,” said Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth after Friday’s contest, which was played in ideal weather. “We were just depending on big plays. We weren’t at any point really sustaining drives.”

Hildreth, who described Friday’s loss as a wasted opportunity, noted big-play capability of his team’s offense, which includes two deepthreat receivers—Stubblefield and senior Deandre Holliday.

Willowbrook scored its touchdown on an 82-yard drive that began after Holliday made a solo defensive tackle on a Providence Catholic running play on a fourthand-two play from the Warriors’ 19-yard line. Willowbrook began its drive late in the first quarter and completed it with Tumilty’s scrambling 13-yard touchdown run with 10:15 left in the second period.

Sophomore Izzy Manning converted the extra-point kick to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead.

Willowbrook tried an onside kick to start the second half. The Celtics recovered the kick at midfield and drove 53 yards for a touchdown. The Celtics kicked the extra point to tie the score at 7-7 with about eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Both of Willowbrook’s third-quarter offensive drives ended in punts. Providence Catholic drove 73 yards for the go-ahead score. The drive began in the third quarter and ended in the fourth period. The Celtics managed to draw the Warriors offside on a fourthand-three play from the 7-yard line.

The penalty gave Providence Catholic a first-and-goal chance. The Celtics crossed the goal line on a second-down run. The extra-point kick gave them their 14-7 lead with 9:55 to play.

Willowbrook’s next drive ended with a punt. The Celtics eventually punted the ball back to the Warriors, who took possession at their 20-yard line with 3:39 to play. Tumilty was sacked for an

eight-yard loss on the first play of the drive. He fired a 28-yard pass to Holliday on the next play. Moments later, Tumilty fired the long downfield pass to Stubblefield, who made a running catch and raced down to the Celtics’ 7-yard line.

“Sam led me to the ball,” said Stubblefield. “It was a good throw and I made a nice catch. I just couldn’t put it all the way into the end zone.”

Providence Catholic made the interception at the goal line one play later on a second-and-goal pass.

“We need to be more efficient and convert more,” said Tumilty, who played offense and defense and intercepted a Providence pass during the second quarter.

“We need to get better at doing the little things. We’ve got to keep our heads up and get better in practice.”

The Warriors face a tough opponent this Friday; they will travel to Oak Park to take on the Oak Park/ River Forest Huskies of the West Suburban Silver Conference. The Huskies, who won the Silver championship last season, posted an 8-3 overall record and advanced to the second round of the 8A playoffs in 2018. The Huskies opened the 2019 season with a 23-14 loss at Waubonsie Valley.

Addison Trail girls volleyball team has busy first week Blazers record four victories, including two at Metea Valley/Oswego East tournament

The Addison Trail girls volleyball team got match-tested real quick.

The Blazers started the season with seven matches last week, going 4-3 overall.

Addison Trail opened the season with a two-set win against Lake Park in non-conference action and then downed Maine East in another non-conference sweep.

The Blazers then headed to the Metea Valley/Oswego East tournament where they went 2-3.

“We played some great teams there,” said Addison Trail coach Dan Styler.

The Blazers lost to a Sterling team that is garnering national recognition. “They are ranked first in Class 3A and are ranked nationally,” said Styler.

Addison Trail also dropped a contest to Naperville Central. “We lost to them, but battled well,” said Styler.

The Blazers defeated Yorkville in pool play, lost a three-setter to Oak Park-River Forest and then came back to close out with a win against

Glenbard East.

“Our girls applied pretty good serving pressure in the tournament,” said Styler. “We also did a really good job grinding out points with hustle plays. We battled through some long volleys, which was exciting to watch. We stretched some volleys against some great attackers on the other side of the net. We had some great touches. I’m very proud of our defensive effort so far this year. The girls are gelling on the floor and that’s something that has resonated in every match so far, win or loss. The team camaraderie has been great.”

Styler cited Amy Reyes, the team’s

setter, with strong play. “Amy is doing a great job,” said Styler. “She’s a 5-foot setter running a 5-1 offense.

She’s probably the best undersized player in the western suburbs and I say that being unbiased. We beat two teams with Division I college setters by Amy running our offense efficiently. I’m proud of her play so far. It’s exciting to see Amy compete against these teams and run our offense.”

Jess D’Ambrose also has played well out of the gates for the Blazers.

“She’s a four-year varsity starter who has elevated her game even more this year,” said Styler.

Looking back on the first seven

matches, Styler said a point of emphasis going forward will be consistency. “Every team probably says they want to be more consistent,” he said. “We will go through spurts where we gash teams for points on long runs and then we’ll get stuck in a few rotations. I think that’s going to be a priority. We are only as good as our serving and passing. We are built on running a fast offense. If we are predictable, we will have challenges with bigger blockers across the net.”

Addison Trail played York earlier this week and then heads to the Willowbrook tournament this weekend.

“York is always tough, so we’re excited for that,” said Styler.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team split its first two matches of the 2019 season. The Warriors opened the season with a tough three-game loss at Bartlett.

Two days later, Willowbrook earned a home victory against East Aurora.

The Warriors beat East Aurora 25-16, 25-8 in an Aug. 28 match in Villa Park. Freshman Natalie Cipriano provided seven kills for Willowbrook. Sophomore Kyla Ostrowski contributed three kills and nine digs.

Junior Grace Reckamp handed out nine assists and connected for three kills. Senior Payton Ceh made seven digs, while junior Alejandra Lopez delivered four digs and three service aces. Sophomore Katie Linnig had five assists. Senior Alondra Mendoza had three kills.

Bartlett outlasted the Warriors 2927, 18-25, 26-24 in the season-opening battle on Aug. 26. Ceh piled up 29 digs; she also contributed four service aces and two assists. Ostrowski piled up 18 digs, seven kills and three aces. Cipriano hit 12 kills, while Mendoza bashed six kills.

Reckamp amassed 22 assists, 14 digs, seven kills and a pair of blocks.

Linnig had 10 assists, six digs and a

pair of kills. Junior Stephanie Dasbach had six blocks.

“It was a good battle over there,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason of the match at Bartlett. “We saw a lot of good things.”

Mason noted that last year’s team included eight seniors. The current group, however, includes several experienced players.

“We have a strong core of girls who have played a lot of club volleyball,” said Mason. “It’s a solid crew. Hopefully they’ll keep working hard.”

Mason mentioned the strong play of two of the team’s youngest players—Cipriano and Ostrowski— through two matches.

“She’s been giving us great swings in the front row,” said Mason of Cipriano. “Kyla has been dominant on the outside. She was on the freshman team last year. She’s made a lot of growth.”

The Warriors return to action with this week’s non-conference home match against Glenbard North. They will then play in their own eight-team invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Willowbrook will open its West Suburban Gold Conference season with a Sept. 10 match at Addison Trail.

Addison Trail then faces Proviso East in Week 3 before squaring off against state power Glenbard West, which opened eyes with a Week 1 win against fellow power Maine South.

Blazers record big win at Lake Park

The Addison Trail boys soccer team got itself off to a nice start by winning its first three contests of the 2019 season.

The Blazers kicked off the season with an impressive 2-0 non-conference road win at Lake Park. The game was tied 0-0 at halftime.

“Lake Park plays on a grass field, so it took us some time to get adjusted to that,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini, who noted his squad usually plays on turf fields. “We had a very good second half.”

In the win, Jose Galindo, a junior, scored both goals. He tallied his first off a crossing play and then nailed a 35-yard strike.

“It was a beautiful goal,” said Dini of the second tally.

Adrian Guzman and Aaron Sanchez, a junior new to the team coming out of one of the academies, each had an assist.

“Jose plays center-mid for us,” said Dini. “He came off the bench and has now worked his way into the starting lineup. He will play about half the game for us. He’s a senior who has a very good leg.

He’s dangerous anytime he’s on the field if he gets a shot off.”

Addison Trail also notched a 3-2 win against Fenton in the first game of the Blazers’ annual Joe Novy tournament.

Fenton played us tough. They are feisty and hung around the whole game. We outshot them 16-5 so finishing is a little bit of an issue for us right now.”

Addison Trail also downed Proviso West 9-0 in another Novy tournament game.

“Right now I like our depth,” said Dini. “We are able to go 15-16 players which gives us five guys off the bench. It’s a good mix of seniors and juniors, and the big thing is getting the juniors up to speed on the varsity game. In these next couple weeks they will be getting more minutes. I also like our senior leadership. We don’t have a lot of seniors, but the guys we have are key players and they are outspoken. They know what it takes to be a good team and they are consistently trying to get these younger guys up to speed.”

But overall, Dini isn’t complaining about the 3-0 start. “Lake Park was top-four in the state last year and they don’t lose many games at their place,” he said. “That was a big win for us that gave us confidence. We brought a couple guys back but we’re pretty much a new team. We had five goals in the first two games from four guys. That’s going to be a key. We need a lot of guys to contribute. We need this to be a team effort.”

The Willowbrook boys golf team had players going in two different directions this past Saturday.

At the always competitive Fenton Invitational at White Pines in Bensenville, Willowbrook senior Logan Rattana finished 28th in the field with an impressive 18-hole round of 78.

Willowbrook also sent a crew to its annual John Hamann Scramble it hosts at Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

The Warriors finished with a combined 1-under in the scramble. Individually, freshman Brett Vandergrift competed in his first varsity invitational. He shot a 90, including a 41 on the back nine at Sugar Creek.

GreenMan Theatre to perform ‘Power of Children’ In conjunction with current exhibition at History Museum bers-only opening event on Thursday, Sept. 5. Peter Piane, who plays Federal Marshal Robert Smith, will perform Sunday, Sept. 15.

Ryan Fleming, who plays Ryan White’s friend Heather, performs on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Elizabeth Thompson, who plays Miep Gies, one of the helpers who hid Anne Frank’s family, will perform on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The Sunday performances will run about 30 minutes and the actors will take questions from the audience.

The largest performance during “The Power of Children” exhibit will be on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m., and it will take place at the Education building next door to the History Museum.

Tickets are $5 for adults, free for those up to age 18 (registration required) and are available at elmhursthistory.org.

GreenMan Theatre will present performances in September and October given in conjunction with the Elmhurst History Museum’s exhibition “The Power of Children.”

Three children from history that have had particularly strong influences on our world will be featured in the EHM exhibition: Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White.

The characters from these three children’s lives who will be represented in monologues will be: Anne Frank, Otto Frank (Anne’s father), Miep Gies (who helped to hide the Franks), Robert Smith (a Federal Marshal who guarded Ruby), Mrs. Newkirk (one of Ruby’s teachers), Ryan White, and Ryan’s best friend, Heather.

GreenMan Theatre announces cast for ‘The Government Inspector’ GreenMan Theatre is pleased to announce the cast for the first production of their 16th season, The Government Inspector, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher, from the original by Nikolai Gogol. A talented ensemble of actors from around the area will take the stage to bring this wild and improbable comedy to life. The Government Inspector runs three weekends at GreenMan’s performance space in Elmhurst at 232 S. York St. The production opens Friday, September 27 and closes October 13.

Alan Sue photographs: New Winter and Old China Art exhibition opens Sept. 16 at Elmhurst College

Elmhurst College will host photographer Alan Sue’s exhibition “New Winter and Old China” beginning on Monday, Sept. 16.

The exhibition highlights two bodies of Sue’s work. His “Winter” series is photographed on a short stretch of beach along Lake Michigan in Wilmette, Ill. The project, which began in 1976, regained momentum decades later during the polar vortex of 2015 and has continued
