Fenton seeks guest speakers Share your immigration story with our students The Social Studies department at Fenton High School is looking for community members to share their experience of being a “New American.”

Every year, freshmen students in Introduction to the Social Sciences class become historians to collect oral histories of family members or friends who have immigrated to the United States.

The students then create a commemorative project about the first-hand experiences they heard.

Through this project, students demonstrate an understanding of the steps of immigration, the reasons New Americans have for coming to the U.S., and the challenges and opportunities that came with their new lives. This real-life connection to another person in our community helps to bring to life the concepts we learn in the first few weeks of school.

To assist those students who may not know anyone born in another country, teachers arrange for community members to be interviewed. This year, Fenton would like to arrange virtual interviews during the week of Aug. 31 and Sept. 4. Interviews usually last 20 to 30 minutes.

Ribbon cutting ceremony held for SpecBond, Inc.

On Friday, Aug. 21, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for SpecBond, Inc., located in Unit 1B at 1000 Industrial Drive in Bensenville.

SpecBond President Dan Murphy and Village Manager Evan K. Summers cut the ceremonial red ribbon while joined by representatives of the Bensenville Chamber of Com-

merce, Village Trustees, and Spec Bond Partners and staff.

Since 2012, Spec Bond, Inc. has specialized in fabricating and distributing high performance pressure sensitive materials such as adhesive tape and die-cut products for applications for bonding, mounting, assembly, and masking.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, they expanded their operations in March to also supply much needed personal protective equipment (PPE). Products include KN95 masks, surgical isolation masks, hand sanitizer, mask extenders, IR non-contact thermometers, children’s disposable masks, student

desk dividers, and face shields.

“It is great to see business owners like Dan adapt and overcome the many challenges the pandemic has presented – a true testament to America’s entrepreneurial spirit,” said Summers. “We are thrilled you have chosen to grow here in Bensenville and we wish you continued success.”

Rate of COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County continues to decline 195 deaths in May to 83 in June to 34 in July; 12 deaths reported during the first 30 days of August STAFF REPORT

The DuPage County Health Department’s daily update on Aug. 30 reported 14,459 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in county residents, including 533 deaths.

The update from one week earlier—Aug. 23—reported 529 deaths related to COVID-19.

As of Aug. 30, the county health department reported 428 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Villa Park residents, including five deaths.

Through the first 30 days of August, the DuPage County Health Department reported 12 COVID-19 related deaths of county residents during the month.

The health department notes that its figures are provisional and subject to change.

The Illinois Department of Public

Health (IDPH), which also releases daily updates, has reported 23 COVID-19 related deaths in DuPage County residents during its 30 updates from Aug. 1-30. The IDPH does not provide a specific date of death for those whose death is related to the coronavirus. The DuPage County Health Department does provide the actual date of death of residents whose death is related to COVID-19.

According to the county health department, the first COVID-19 related death in the county took place on March 19. There were 14 deaths related to the coronavirus in DuPage County during March. There were 195 COVID-19 related deaths in the county in April, and another 195 deaths related to COVID-19 in May. There were 83 DuPage County deaths relat-

According to the IDPH report from

Aug. 30, there have been over 233,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Illinois. More than 4 million tests for COVID-19 have been performed in the state, including about 250,000 in DuPage County.

The IDPH states that about 86 percent (6,920) of the state’s COVID-19 related deaths have involved residents 60 and older. About 45 percent (3,575) of the state’s deaths related to the coronavirus have involved residents 80 and older.

Health Department provides framework to return to school The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is releasing a “Return to School Framework” with the DuPage Regional Office of Education (DuPage ROE). As COVID-19 cases continue to rise locally, the “Return to School Framework” recommends that school officials review and consider the level of disease activity in their communities as they make decisions about if and when to shift between learning models this school year.

DCHD has been working closely with the DuPage ROE and school district administrators in DuPage County to help inform plans for safely reopening schools this fall.

“Reopening schools is complicated, as is providing guidance for a virus we are still learning about,” said Karen Ayala, DuPage County Health Department executive director. “This framework will help school officials and parents understand when it is appropriate to transition to more in-person learning.”

“As we begin the school year, our school leaders have resources from IDPH and the DuPage County Health Department that will allow them to make decisions to keep our students, teachers, and families healthy and safe,” said Dr. Darlene Ruscitti, superintendent, DuPage County Regional Office of Education.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) encourage school administrators to make decisions about school reopening in collaboration with local health officials. The health and safety measures recommended for schools by IDPH and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) are important tools to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission in a school setting. The success of these measures, however, is also dependent on the level of COVID-19 activity in the communities where our students, teachers, staff, and families live, learn, work,

pray, and play.

In addition to county-level metrics and COVID-19 surveillance data, school-level considerations are important as well, such as case and outbreak activity, specific trends and distribution of cases, absenteeism among students and staff within a school, and alternate remote learning site options and safety protocols.

In every learning model, school districts are also advised to follow the health and safety protocols set forth

DCHD will post the current level of Community Transmission weekly each Friday afternoon on the DuPage County Health Department Website at dupagehealth.org/595/ Schools-and-Daycares.

Fenton superintendent offers information, guidelines for Remote Learning

I want to share portions of an article with you regarding Remote Learning. The article is from the Institute of Digital Media and Child Development - Helping children lead healthy lives in a digital world. In summary, the article provides 10 tips for parents navigating online education: With COVID-19 causing widespread school closures, children across the country are being given alternate resources, some online, to study outside of the classroom.

Temporary solutions being devised for remote education range from online classroom tools like Google Classroom, to Zoom and podcasts by teachers.

“This is a stressful, unpredictable time for everyone, including families, parents and children. You can help your children by providing them with a structure and routine, and being a positive force in their education,” said Dr. Pamela Hurst-Della Pietra, president of Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development.

With that in mind, Children and Screens has put together 10 tips for families as they adjust to the new reality of learning at home.

1. DIGITAL QUARANTINE: Consider limiting your children’s use of cell phones and tablets until their schoolwork is done satisfactorily, so that it can receive their undivided attention.

2. MAKE SPACE FOR LEARN-

ING: Your children will achieve their best work in a quiet, comfortable, and dedicated space devoted to learning.

Ideally, this will be a different setup than where they normally play games or watch television.

3. MONITOR THE (COMPUTER) MONITOR: In this new learning milieu, you can help by monitoring your children’s levels of interest and engagement. The simplest way to do this? Observation. Look at your child’s eyes to see if they’re following along with the screen. Check if they’re taking notes or zoning out.

Ask questions at the end of a lesson.

While this may require taking an hour off from work or stepping out for an early lunch, it’s important to confirm that your children are indeed learning.

4. DIGITAL RECESS: Encourage your children to get up, get some fresh air, go for a walk during the regularly scheduled school break times so they are not sedentary for the entire day.

5. FACETIME: In-person interaction is ideal for kids, but until it’s safe for them to return to school, encourage your children to video chat or text message with friends rather than simply scrolling through social media news feeds. You don’t want your children to feel socially isolated, but at the same time be cautious of the risk of becoming overly reliant upon their devices.

6. KEEP IT OLD SCHOOL: Overuse of screen time can have adverse

impacts on young brains. If available, request textbooks from your child’s school along with other print materials in order to offset the amount of screen time. Stimulate self-expression by having discussions with your children about what they are doing, and also encourage creative writing and imaginative storytelling.

7. WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER: Remember that you’re not alone in this journey. Check in with other parents to see what they’ve found effective or to ask if they need help. It is important that we all work together as a community for the good of our children and families.

8. PLAN YOUR WORK AND WORK YOUR PLAN: Good planning can relieve stress for both children and parents. Check in with your kids about their plans and help them develop a written schedule not only for the day, but for the week as a whole. Help them prioritize and learn to create goals, tasks, and deadlines, just like adults do when they go to work. Offer incentives for healthy behaviors.

9. THIS AIN’T NO VACATION: Even though staying home from school might feel like a holiday, remind your kids that they’re not on vacation.

10. DON’T FORGET TO HAVE FUN: Plan off-screen activities for the whole family. Between school and work obligations, it’s rare for parents and children to have this much time together, so turn it into

an opportunity for bonding. Write predictions for a TV show that the whole family watches. Organize a tournament, family card games, charades, or chess, or get outside for a hike or walk together after school.

Montini Catholic students celebrate their first Mass of the new school year Montini Catholic students celebrated their first Mass of the new school year on Friday, Aug. 28. This year’s opening Mass did look a little different, however, with some members of the student body able to celebrate socially distanced, in person, and all others watching virtually in the classrooms and at home. The intentions of the unique gathering, however, didn’t stray from the Bronco tradition of reflecting on the new school year ahead with a vision of hope for the future.

Rev. Matthew Nathan from St. Alexis Parish in Bensenville was honored to celebrate the Mass with the students.

“We thank you all for being here today,” said Principal Beirne in his address to students after the Mass. “Of course, we wish we were able to be all together, but we can still make the most of it.”

Principal Beirne welcomed the newest Broncos from the Class of 2024 as well as new teachers and students on what was the 10th day of classes this fall.

Bond denied for 2 Cook County men accused of breaking into homes in Lombard, Wheaton DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin, DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick, Chief of the Wheaton Police Department William Murphy and Chief of the Lombard Police Department Roy Newton have announced that charges have been filed against three individuals suspected of breaking into homes in Lombard and Wheaton, and shooting a homeowner in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 23.

Malik Pitts, 22, of Broadview; Isaiah Johnson, 21, of Blue Island; and Keytori Jackson, 22, of Broadview, appeared in bond court Aug. 30 where Judge Timothy McJoynt denied bond for Pitts and Johnson and set bond at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply for Jackson.

At approximately 5:04 a.m. Aug. 23, Wheaton Police officers responded to 1700 block of E. Evergreen St. in Wheaton for a home invasion.

Residents reported that they heard noises coming from outside.

The homeowners exited the back door leaving the door unlocked at which time they allegedly observed Pitts and Johnson. It is alleged that Johnson pointed a silver handgun at them as Pitts entered the residence

by the back door. It is further alleged that shortly after Pitts entered the residence, Johnson directed the victims to walk towards the rear of the residence with the gun.

Once inside, it is alleged that Pitts had entered a bedroom where two young girls and their grandmother were sleeping. Pitts allegedly attempted to pull down the blanket and shorts of one of the girls. It also is alleged that at this time the grandmother woke up and spoke to Pitts at which time he struck her left cheek, ear and neck. The girls’ father entered the room and fought with Pitts.

It is alleged that the men then fled the scene in a stolen car driven by Jackson.

At approximately 5:22 the same morning, the Lombard Police Department responded to a call in the 400 block of S. Highland Ave. for a home invasion and shooting that just occurred.

It is alleged that the male homeowner was awoken by Pitts and Johnson in his living room. It is alleged that Johnson was pointing a gun at him and asked “where’s the money?”

It is further alleged that Pitts went to the upstairs bedroom where the

mother and her daughter were sleeping in the same bed. It is alleged that Pitts ordered them to the main floor of the residence. It is further alleged that Pitts then ordered the daughter to the basement and ordered her to remove her clothing.

It is alleged that when the girl refused and fled, a physical struggle ensued between the father and Pitts.

It is alleged that the struggle went into the back yard of the residence leaving Johnson with a gun behind them. It is alleged that during the struggle, Johnson fired two gunshots, one striking the father in the chest and one into the family car.

It is alleged that the gunshot that hit the father, went through him and ultimately struck Pitts as well. It is alleged that Johnson and Pitts then fled the scene in the same stolen vehicle driven by Jackson.

“The conduct alleged in these charges is shockingly violent and demonstrates a complete disregard for our laws and for human life,” Berlin said. “The victims in this case had every right to feel safe in their own home, the one place everyone should feel safe. That sense of safety has now been shattered. But the resi-

dents of DuPage County should take comfort in knowing they have some incredibly dedicated and talented police officers in their community who will do everything they can to protect the people of DuPage County “Make no mistake, today’s charges and no-bond orders send a loud and clear message to would-be criminals that if you commit violent crimes in DuPage County, you will be caught, you’ll be arrested and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

“In the middle of the night, it is alleged that these three defendants threatened the safety, security and very lives of two unsuspecting, innocent families,” Murphy said. “I can’t begin to imagine the terror the victims must have felt when they were allegedly awoken by the defendants.

Thankfully all three defendants were quickly identified as suspects in these cases and apprehended and will now be prosecuted for their alleged crimes.”

“It is alleged that the defendants in these cases went on a one-hour crime spree and in doing so, violated the sanctity of two DuPage County households,” Newton said. “Thanks

to the cooperative efforts of the Lombard and Wheaton Police Departments, along with the legal guidance of the State’s Attorney’s Office, all three defendants will now be prosecuted for their alleged crimes.”

“I want to thank the forensic scientists at the DuPage County Crime Laboratory,” Mendrick said. “They drop everything in their life at a moment’s notice when a major crime occurs and evidence needs to be analyzed. I want to underscore the value of their important work within the law enforcement matrix of DuPage County.

If you come to this county with the intent to commit crime, you will be swiftly arrested, quantifiable and empirical evidence will be brought against you and our State’s Attorney, Bob Berlin, will prosecute you.

Again, if you come to DuPage County with intent to commit crime, you will suffer the consequences.”

All three defendants face felony attempted murder, home invasion and aggravated battery charges. The next court appearance for the defendants is scheduled for Sept. 28 for arraignment in front of Judge Alex McGimpsey.

EEHealth shares what to do when COVID-19 anxiety is no longer manageable At some point, everyone experiences anxiety.

It could be worry about a job interview or a big test, preparing for the birth of a child, or worrying about a global pandemic.

Typically, anxiety involves thoughts and worries about a future event. While it may not feel good at the time, anxiety is a needed experience. It warns us of danger and can be a motivator for us to react or move on to the next step.

Physical symptoms (like sweaty palms or upset stomach) are the body’s reaction to anxiety and the “fight or flight” mode people shift into when experiencing a stressful situation, said Laura Koehler, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and manager of anxiety services at Linden Oaks Behavioral Health.

For many, once the body recognizes the danger is gone, things shift back to normal. It’s when it doesn’t and people live in a constant state of fear and worry, that anxiety can become a problem.

Some of the warning signs that anxiety may be a problem include: • Chronic sleep problems • Chronic appetite problems, such as loss of appetite or overeating • Avoiding work or other regular social activities • Chronic physical symptoms such as migraines, stomachaches, muscle tension or bowel problems If anxiety is causing any of those symptoms, a professional therapist or counselor may help. Treatment may involve medications or therapy to develop coping mechanisms for anxiety triggers.

Other steps that can help with anxiety include: • Developing a routine for the day.

“Give yourself some time before work

starts,” said Koehler. “It’s hard to start your workday off when you just woke up or haven’t eaten breakfast yet.”

Daily routines can help keep the body from misidentifying things as a “danger” and help you move through your day with less anxiety.

• Keeping a set sleep and wake time and adopting a healthy diet.

• Packing a self-care kit for anxiety-inducing situations. The kit may include some “distraction” items such as word searches, crossword puzzles or fidget toys to help calm the nervous energy.

• Finding soothing activities to help when anxiety flares up. A warm shower, lighting a favorite candle, spending time with a pet or cuddling up with a warm blanket can help ease anxiety.

• Connecting with others. Staying in touch with trusted friends or family members can help people better manage anxiety and keep depression at bay.

While anxiety can factor into many situations, Koehler says concerns about COVID-19 and the global pandemic is a common theme. The virus has prompted fears about health, job loss, the health of loved ones or even school activities.

“It can be very anxiety-provoking for people worrying that they’re going to give it to their loved one,” said Koehler.

It’s not uncommon to experience a range of emotions and worry as it relates to COVID-19, she said. Just as with other instances of anxiety, understanding and accepting worries about the virus can help people focus on navigating life during a pandemic.

“Being confused about COVID-19 and not worrying about it one day, then worrying about it the next — that’s all okay,” she said. “It’s not as much about

How to keep kids safe this fall during COVID-19

School districts across the country are figuring out how to navigate educating students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some started with remote learning while others brought students back on a full or part-time basis.

As parents prepare their children for fall, Dr. Victoria Uribe, who chairs the pediatric department at Elmhurst Clinic, offers a few tips on preparing kids for life during a pandemic.

• Have the talk. Talk to children about the coming school year and what it may look like for them. Ask questions about how they’re feeling, expectations, what they may need to succeed this school year and ways they can stay connected with their friends. Dr. Uribe suggests using mealtimes to continue those discussions throughout the school year.

• Educate on use of masks. A child’s face mask should be comfortable enough to wear for the length of time they will be in school. For younger children, consider a mask that ties or connects behind the head rather than one that loops over the ears, suggests Dr. Uribe. Kids should have at least two

masks, so they always have a clean mask to wear.

• Establish a sleep routine. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on sleep schedules. “Kids have been sleeping really weird hours since this all started,” says Dr. Uribe. To get kids back on a regular sleep schedule, try slowly re-adjusting by putting children to bed earlier each night and waking them up earlier each day. The National Sleep Foundation recommends children get 8 to 13 hours of sleep, depending on their age.

• Get a check-up. Even if children are starting the school year with remote learning, be sure kids are up to date on all their school physicals before school starts, says Dr. Uribe.

Don’t put off school physicals until later in the year when doctors’ offices may be dealing with flu or COVID-19 outbreaks.

• Don’t forget the flu shot. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends flu shots for children ages 6 months and older. Uribe notes that the flu shot will be of particular importance this year with the COVID-19 pandemic. “If we can prevent more flu that will help,”

says Dr. Uribe. Flu shots typically become available mid- to late-September.

• Find a designated space for schoolwork. If children are learning remotely, be sure kids have a quiet, comfortable space to do their schoolwork at home. If possible, set up a desk with their supplies so they have a regular spot to do their work.

Let them pick out a few desk supplies to help personalize their space.

• Get into a routine. Remote learning kids should still get dressed and have breakfast before starting off their school day at home. Work in some outdoor break time so they don’t spend the entire day indoors.

When possible, find a way for kids to safely socialize with their friends — whether it’s a study group outside or picnic lunch in the backyard.

• Plan. College students should be stocked with essential supplies — masks, over-the-counter pain and cold medications and a thermometer. Talk to them about ways to stay healthy and safe during the pandemic and stay in regular contact throughout the year.

Viewpoint Cullerton highlights driver’s license extension for senior drivers To prevent unnecessary danger to seniors in Illinois, state Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is alerting drivers age 75 and older that their driver’s license expiration dates have been extended by one year.

“The one-year extension for our seniors will help delay a visit to the DMV during this awful pandemic,” Cullerton said. “This move will help at-risk DuPage County residents keep their driving privileges and proof of identity without putting their health and safety at risk.”

In addition to being 75 years of age or older, the driver must have a valid driver’s license. Those seniors whose licenses have been suspended or revoked do not qualify for the one-year extension. Eligible drivers should soon receive a letter from the secretary of state as proof that they qualify.

For drivers under age 75, expiration dates for driver’s licenses, ID cards and license plate stickers have been extended until Nov. 1, 2020.

Customers who choose to visit a facility must wear a face mask. In addition, customers are asked to be patient due to heavy volume and to be prepared to wait outside in various types of weather.

“There is not an immediate need for this vulnerable population to put themselves at risk,” Cullerton said.

“I urge our older populations to take advantage of this extension and stay safe.”

Cullerton continues to encourage drivers to visit www.cyberdriveillinois.com to avoid waiting in line and take advantage of online services, including replacements and renewals of registrations, driver’s licenses and ID cards.

The year 2020: Wow, in hindsight who could have seen this coming?

I thought we’d been through it all. A pandemic. The lockdown. The economy suffering because of the lockdown and pandemic. Family members losing jobs. My youngest son missing out on his last semester of high school.

Virtual graduation.

What else could possibly happen? Ha! I had to ask.

I thought the first six months of 2020 were taxing – a challenge in flexibility and change. A challenge in faith and country and leadership. I thought there weren’t any more possible challenges to tackle.

And then I lived out the last 12 days.

In less than two weeks’ time, here’s the trifecta that’s unfolded in my life: 1. I brought my 18-year-old son 1,300 miles across the country to college and left him there, only hoping he’ll do well, go to class and learn how to sort his own laundry. Oh, and of course wear his mask (or face covering, depending on your preference).

Now he’s coming up against the reality of his first hurricane, although to him “It’s just a tropical storm, mom, no big deal.”

2. I lost my dad to non-COVID illness and advanced age. I hadn’t been able to see him since the lockdown. He was in a nursing home. My sister was able to be with him in his last days and that brings me comfort.

Finally, I’ve saved the best for last (truly).

my tears were dry by this time) I was blessed with a grandson. He was born during COVID so we weren’t able to see him right away.

No visitors were allowed at the hospital.

I like to think I live a fairly boring life, but this latest trifecta has been anything but – in hearttugging ways, in sad ways and in the very best of ways. Life can be complicated. It often is.

My son was supposed to follow us across the country, not the other way around. We had a move planned, but because of COVID everything about that has changed. Instead of us being there to welcome him, he is bravely forging ahead on his own.

It’s what an 18-year-old is supposed to do. But still, I am his mom. I can’t put that behind me – now or ever. His university has an all-you-can-eat food plan and free laundry. At least those are two things I don’t have to worry about.

My dad. That’s an entire column, but I believe I’ve already written a few about this hero in my life. It’s a shame – a true shame – that he lived his last months without family or friends surrounding him with the love he so deserved. I’m mad at CORONA for that. I’m more than mad.

Reader sticks up for freedom of speech, expression against ‘bully’ I am writing this letter in response to the young girl who put an unsigned letter in my mailbox regarding a flag that is in our yard. She apparently finds it offensive. With no knowledge of my family, she tells me that I am spreading hatred. The letter inaccurately states that I have “Blue Lives Matter” apparel, then goes on to make a lot of assumptions about my beliefs. She then gives her version of events that have happened across the U.S. After she believes that she has properly “schooled” me with her opinions, I am then given a list of online petitions where I can go to dutifully show my support for the black community.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind our youth that we, as Americans, are entitled to our own opinions and beliefs. There are no laws that force us to take marching orders from one group of people or another. This is the land of the free

and the home of the brave. I have tremendous respect for both of these ideas. The “free” piece of it allows you to have a position and I can use my free-thinking mind to arrive at a different position. The “brave” is for the men and women who have protected our free country for many years. It’s for my grandfather that went to fight as a 17-year-old boy in World War II. It’s for all people that put their life on the line every single day.

If in fact you feel so strongly about your personal opinions, there are countless meaningful ways to help – more helpful than an unsigned letter.

Many communities of color are losing their children in great numbers to violence, they would definitely benefit from your principles. There are many volunteer opportunities readily available. Please consider relocating to these areas, volunteering in shelters, mentoring at the boys and

girls after-school clubs or becoming a court liaison for these children. All would be tremendously impactful.

I applaud you for standing up for a group that you believe is being oppressed. What I find so contradictory is that you are attempting to oppress my voice and the God-given right to my opinion.

Delivering an unsigned letter after dark doesn’t make you a hero. Your attempt to bully me into submission will not work. If my Thin Blue Line flag is so offensive, I suggest you drive down another street. When I see things that go against my belief system, I simply pay no attention to it. I respect my fellow Americans that have differing opinions. I am an American who is protected by laws.

The flag will continue to fly and I suggest that “We The People” stand for what we hold sacred.

Reader appreciates state rep. efforts to assist vulnerable populations As we work to respond to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to ensure the most vulnerable populations remain a priority for our state leaders. This pandemic presents a particular challenge for the more than 230,000 Illinoisans living with Alzheimer’s, their more than 587,000 caregivers and the many others impacted by this disease. I am personally impacted by the disease as a family member and someone who works with those affected by the disease.

Today I write to thank state Rep. Kathleen Willis for considering the critical needs of people impacted by

dementia during the extraordinary legislative session. The legislature passed three important items – a 15% increase in funding for home and community-based services provided through the Community Care Program, a one-year renewal of the scratch-off lottery ticket benefiting Alzheimer’s care and support, and a reauthorization of $10 million in Alzheimer’s research funding.

These are important steps which will support people living with dementia currently and those who may face this disease in the years to come.

While we should be proud of the

steps already taken, we need to do more to protect residents of longterm care facilities who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. I urge policymakers to fully implement the recommendations of the Alzheimer’s Association to improve testing, reporting, surge activation, and providing support at long-term care facilities.

Let’s continue work together to protect our most vulnerable populations during these challenging times.

Internet funding approved for low-income students The DuPage County Board on Tuesday approved $1.5 million to provide low-income students with internet service.

Under the agreement approved by the County Board on Tuesday, school districts will find appropriate vendors to provide internet service at no cost to low-income students, and all or some of the costs will be reimbursed by the Regional Office of Education.

Many school districts throughout the County have moved to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funds for the program came from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Funds must be spent by Dec. 15.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 31, the DuPage County Community Based Testing Site (CBTS) will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 12 noon, or until 600 tests are completed each day.

The drive-through CBTS opened June 16 on the DuPage County Complex for residents of DuPage County to be tested for COVID-19. The COVID-19 test is free, and no appointment, doctor referral, or insurance is needed.

To ensure the safety of testing personnel, the test will be done while you are sitting in your vehicle. You must be sitting at a functioning window and cannot exit your vehicle while at the test site. No motorcycles will be allowed to enter and no pets are allowed in the vehicle.

The DuPage County CBTS will be closed Monday, Sept. 7 to observe Labor Day. The CBTS will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Have you experienced the feeling of hopelessness and sadness for a constant period of two weeks or greater during the past 12 months (possible beginning of clinical depression)?

19.0% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 5 young people 3. Have you made a plan to attempt suicide in the past 12 months?

9.0% answered YES or almost 1 out of every 11 young people The release of these results comes just before the beginning of September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month. National Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 6 – 12, with World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10. During this day, week, and

month, organizations and individuals across the state will be conducting activities to draw attention to the terrible tragedy of youth suicide.

Local youth excel with 4-H projects

DuPage County 4-H members marked the culmination of their 4-H year virtually this year, through an online project show. More than 370 entries were submitted in this format as families embraced this adaptation to their normal in-person summer fairs and shows.

“Although it was a different experience, the 4-H virtual show still provided a way for members to show what they have learned and

accomplished throughout the year,” said Andrea Farrier, 4-H Youth Development Program coordinator in DuPage County. “This year, photos and videos of those project exhibits, along with one-page reports for each entry, were uploaded to an online system in place of being brought to a physical show.”

Each 4-H year, members select projects that interest them from a list of more than 80 across the broader ar-

eas of animal science; civic engagement; creative arts; environment; healthy living; science, technology, engineering and math; and career and leadership development. Once youth choose projects, they dive into learning on their own, through local workshops or clubs, or with the help of caring adults in their lives. Often their goal is to show off their project work through the summer 4-H show.

During the 2020 virtual show, just

like with in-person competitions, youth had the opportunity to get feedback on their work through judging. Knowledgeable judges reviewed virtual submissions and provided positive, constructive feedback to help 4-H’ers continue growing and learning into the next year.

“We thank all of our DuPage County 4-H show volunteer judges, award sponsors, superintendents, club leaders and other volunteers for giving our youth this important experience in a memorable year,” said Farrier. “Thank you also to our 4-H members and families for your hard work and dedication.”

Warriors’ girls golfers in action

Willowbrook’s girls golf team completed a busy week with Saturday’s competition against York and Glenbard West at Sugar Creek Golf Course in Villa Park. Playing at York’s home venue, the Warriors earned a team score of 189.

York won the team competition with its score of 165, while Glenbard West posted a 186. Junior Emma Rattana earned Willowbrook’s best individual score by firing a 42 on the par-32, ninehole layout. Sophomore Mickey Martens shot a 46 for the Warriors, while seniors Maddie Hayes and Peyton Mitrick turned in scores of 50 and 51, respectively. Willowbrook began the week with a West Suburban Conference dual meet against Hinsdale South. The Hornets (198) defeated the Warriors (203) in the team standings of the Aug. 24 meet at Village Greens of Woodridge. Rattana tied for first in the individual standings with her nine-hole score of 47. Mitrick contributed a 49, while sophomore Maddie Aderholt posted a 51.

Hayes contributed to the Warriors’ team score with a 56. On Aug. 26, Willowbrook played a conference dual meet against Glenbard West. The Hilltoppers (149) beat the Warriors (161) at Willowbrook’s home venue—Twin Lakes Golf Club in Westmont. Rattana (top left) earned individual medalist honors with her nine-hole score of 33.

I’m mad-enraged for robbing my wonderful and loving dad of the last weeks or months that he was cognizant enough to know he was sitting in a room that wasn’t his home, alone. It wasn’t fair. CORONA isn’t fair. Life isn’t fair. I understand this, but’s hard not to be sad about those facts sometimes.

My grandson entered the world seeing people’s faces covered by masks. It’s not ideal and I hate it, but he has 10 fingers and 10 toes. He is beautiful.

He doesn’t see our faces but he feels our love and he hears our words of endearment in his perfect little ears. When I held him for the first time his tiny hand gripped my finger. He fell asleep in my arms and grinned in his sleep.

It was probably gas, but in this year of 2020, I’ll take what I can get.
