Schillerstrom offers update on western access to Village Board On Tuesday, Sept. 11, Chairman of the Illinois Tollway, Bob Schillerstrom, provided an update on the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project relevant to the Village of Bensenville.

As Chairman of the Illinois Tollway, Schillerstrom provided a number of updates including the I-490/I-90 interchanges and O’Hare Airport perimeter fence and road relocation. Schillerstrom also reported that the initial Western Access project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 and is projected to create 65,000 new sustainable jobs.

“Thank you Chairman Schillerstrom for taking the time to meet with the Village Board said Village President Frank DeSimone. “We look forward to the completion of this project and experiencing the benefits Western Access will bring to Bensenville.”

A.E. “Gene” Staley’s successful corn manufacturing company in Decatur was already producing starch, glucose, sugar and syrup in 1919 when it added professional football to the assembly line.

Staley, owner of the Staley Manufacturing Co., would eventually make Decatur the “Soybean Capital of the World.” He was behind the

creation of Lake Decatur, the Staley viaduct and the Staley Building (now the Tate and Lyle Building).

But Staley’s legacy will forever be linked with the NFL’s Chicago Bears, originally the Decatur Staleys—a football team that grew from Staley’s desire to dominate an industrial football league and expand his brand.

With no professional football league at that time and many former college football players working factory jobs, industrial leagues rose in popularity in the early 1900s—particularly in the college-football-crazy Midwest.

Staley, wanting to offer athletics as an outlet for his employees, decided in 1919 to form a team of his own. The first team was made up of the existing pool of Staley employees, though about half the squad had played in college. The team practiced and played at Staley Field—built and also used as a baseball facility.

After losing their first game, the Staleys won their next six games in the seven-game season, five in blowouts, to win the Central Illinois Championship.

One of those wins was a 41-0 drubbing of the Arcola Independents. Later that year, Arcola requested a rematch. Staley, though, found out that Arcola had hired Dutch Sternaman, a top player at the University of Illinois, to recruit some players — ringers. He refused to play them.

“Staley felt that was unfair—his players were just guys from the company,” Staley Museum Director Laura Jahr said. “He wasn’t willing to send his players in to be humiliated.”

But Arcola wasn’t alone. Many of the other teams in the industrial league the Staleys played in also hired workers because of their sports talent.

Staley didn’t want to be out-

done, and began to think bigger than just the regional league. He saw the Staleys as a way to spread the company name nationally and, in 1920, George Halas was hired as player and coach.

Halas was a 1917 Illinois graduate who had played football, baseball and basketball for the Illini before joining the Navy in 1918 and leading the Naval Academy to a Rose Bowl win against Notre Dame. He later joined the New York Yankees, but his career was cut short by injury and he went to work with a Chicago railroad.

coach and play for the team, and also recruit friends and recent college players.

“Staley and Halas came to the agreement that while the football players would have to work at the company, they would get two hours off from their duties each day to practice,” Jahr said. “Halas didn’t want to jeopardize his football reputation by fielding a team that wasn’t ready to play.”

Staley hired the players at a pay rate of $50 per week—a high wage in 1920. Suddenly, Sternaman— the player Staley refused to play against the year before—was a member of Staley’s team. Some of the 1919 roster was brought back, but they were joined by Nebraska All-American Guy Chamberlain along with several former Illinois and Notre Dame players thanks to recruiting barnstorm tour by Halas.

Staley wanted a bigger stage for his players, so Halas reached out to the owner of a team, the Canton (Ohio) Bulldogs, who had just formed a league made up of several Ohio teams. Halas convinced the members of that league to expand—it was called the American Professional Football Association—and it played the 1920 season with 14 teams.

The 1920 Staleys beat the Chicago Tigers 6-0 to win the Western Championship, then played the heavily favored Akron Indians to a scoreless tie in the championship game.

It soon became apparent, though, that paying the highest caliber players, but playing at a 2,500-seat facility in a small city, wasn’t going to be profitable long term.

Staley insisted he didn’t mind if the team lost money—his vision was advertising—but when the company didn’t perform well in 1920, shareholders began looking at the football team as dead weight.

The next year, in 1921, Staley agreed to bring in Halas and Sternaman as part owners of the team, and later Halas and Sternaman bought the remaining shares of the team from Staley for $100 and moved most of the team’s games to Cub Park in Chicago, which is now known as Wrigley Field, which was larger than Staley Field.

That season, still competing as the Staleys thanks to an advertising agreement between Staley and Halas, the Staleys won the APFA Championship, beating Buffalo 107.

By then, the grumbling shareholders had been joined by the factory workers, who didn’t appreciate the high wages and preferential treatment the football players were receiving despite doing little to nothing to help everyday production.

A cartoon was produced in the Staley Journal showing “Ma Corn,” rocking her baby, “Football,” while her other children, “Corn Oil,” “Starch,” “Syrup,” “Glucose” and “Feed,” sat around her misbehaving. Mama Corn is saying, “Children keep quiet. You have done nothing but make noise since little brother came.”

In early 1922, Staley announced the company would no longer be in the business of professional football. He estimated pro football had cost the company $100,000.

“We could not get the crowds in Decatur or other small cities to permit us to break even,” Staley told the Decatur Herald in February 1922.

“Our big football games were played in Chicago, where we could get metropolitan crowds.

“Considering everything, especially the interests of the stockholders, we did not feel warranted in keeping it up.”

In 1922, Halas renamed the team the Bears, and in the same year the APFA changed its named to the National Football League. Today, the NFL is the most popular sports league in the United States.

The Chicago Bears, according to the latest calculation by Forbes Magazine in 2017, are valued at $2.85 billion—seventh-most among NFL franchises.

The Staley estate doesn’t see a dime of that.

“Everybody always asks, ‘Why would he give that up?’” Jahr said.

“Well, it wasn’t the same era of football then as it is today—professional football was an unknown.

It was costing him a lot of money paying the players, and that cartoon, in his mind, bothered him.

Offering home healthcare, other services to seniors since 1985 With Betty Read at the helm, Wisdom Eldercare has been offering in-home healthcare for seniors plus a full range of elder care services since 1985.

The business is located at 386 N. York St. Suite 200 in Elmhurst.

Read served as the Elmhurst Coordinator for Senior Services at City Hall for four years and during that time, she helped establish the Elmhurst Senior Citizens Commission and Ellen Read CEO served as its president for three years. Betty was also Senior Case Coordinator for DuPage County Senior Services for three years.

Now, her daughter Ellen Read serves as CEO, in fact, all six of Betty’s children have worked in the business.

Asked who influenced her career, Betty said the work of Mother Teresa has been her inspiration.

“Her quote was, ‘I cannot do great things but I can do many small things with great love,’” she said.

And what advice would she give to someone starting out in business?

“Plan the right product at the right time at the right price,” Betty said. “Believe in yourself. Have crystal clear goals but be flexible about how to achieve the goals.”

On Friday, Sept. 7, Addison Trail and Willowbrook students and staff members participated in a West Suburban Conference workshop at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle.

The Addison Trail students who attended are pupils of Andrea Grossart, horticulture and biology teacher. They are seniors David Castillo, Adriana Gutierrez, Braden Lee and Jasmine Reynoso.

The Willowbrook students who at-

tended are members of the school’s Environmental Club, sponsored by Justine Bryers. They are juniors Christina Gomez, Elizabeth Swastek, Jake Jagiello and Erick Heredia Marquez.

Addison Trail Assistant Principal Iridia Niewinski and Willowbrook Assistant Principal Bob Daly also went on the field trip, along with 14 other schools in the West Suburban Conference.

During the workshop, participants

engaged in the Restoration Stewards Program, which involved completing an educational service project in restoration to assist The Morton Arboretum with natural areas management and conservation work. They also went on a Tree Science Showcase, where research members from The Morton Arboretum shared information about various careers available in tree science and how technology is informing their research.

LIHEAP applications to begin Oct. 1

Disconnected households and families with children ages 5 or under (includes all children who are not yet 6 years old, that is, up to 5 years and 364 days) can begin applying for LIHEAP assistance beginning Nov. 1. Individuals not eligible for priority enrollment can apply beginning Dec. 1. LIHEAP applicants will be served on a first-come, first-served basis until May 31, 2019, or until funding is exhausted.

LIHEAP is a state and federally funded energy assistance program for low-income families, in which heating bill payments are made on behalf of households. Applications are processed through a network of 35 local administering agencies around the state.

A single-person household can qualify with a monthly income of up to $1,518; a two-person household up to $2,058; a family of three can earn up to $2,598; and a family of four can earn up to $3,138.

Benefits are paid directly to energy vendors on behalf of eligible households. The exception is households whose heating costs are included in their rent.

Letters to the editor Resident urges registration for Town Hall for Our Lives

In regards to last week’s article in the Independent (York students host Town Hall meeting to discuss gun violence, Sept. 20, 2018 issue) on the Town Hall For Our Lives, a local teenager has taken on the monumental task of organizing the Oct. 13 event. This young lady was so moved by stories of Parkland students -- kids her age -- who have experienced gun violence firsthand, that she started attending meetings to get educated on the issue.

From there, she engaged in marches and vigils; connected with victims in person and by phone; participated in a panel with experts promoting “gunsense” legislation and protection for mental health funding. While we pray for this violence to never enter our communities, it is this young lady’s mission to ensure we are all educated and motivated to eradicate gun violence from our daily narrative. A year that will live in infamy: It’s time to act on climate

Those of us who understand the existential threat posed by climate change have been waiting for the “Pearl Harbor moment” that galvanizes people and politicians into taking action. 2018 is turning out to be a “Pearl Harbor year,” where a majority of Americans support taking action, and we’re ready for Congress to press forward.

We thought the wake-up call on climate change had come in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The next opportunity came in 2012 when Superstorm Sandy roared up the East Coast with a storm surge that put much of New York City under water. And last year’s back-to-back-to-back storms -- Harvey, Irma and Maria -- left a swath of destruction from Houston to Puerto Rico, killing thousands and totaling some $300 billion in damage. But none of these were enough to overcome partisan squabbling and pushback from special interests.

Fortunately, Americans are connecting the dots between extreme weather disasters and climate change.

New polling from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication finds that 77 percent of U.S. adults support regulating carbon dioxide as a pollutant and 68 percent support taxing fossil fuel companies while equally reducing other taxes.

That polling should come as no

surprise, given that 2018 is turning out to be a Pearl Harbor year, not just a moment: • Triple-digit temperatures in California have created conditions for the worst wildfires in the state’s history.

• Smoke from western wildfires is creating hazardous breathing conditions across the country.

• A combination of warmer water and nitrogen runoff from farms has produced the worst “red tide” ever seen in Florida.

Encouragement can be found in a growing movement to depoliticize the issue. There are now 86 members, half Republican and half Democrat, in the bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus. In late July, caucus co-leader Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) introduced the first Republican-sponsored bill to price carbon in nearly a decade -- a major crack in the dam holding back effective climate legislation.

As Congress returns from August recess, my hope is that climate change can become a bridge issue rather than the wedge issue it’s been.

Throughout our history, Americans have set aside differences and come together in times of crisis. We can and must do that now with climate change. Let us hope this “year of infamy” will finally set the wheels in motion for Congress to enact meaningful solutions.

Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have made meaningful contributions to their communities

Cullerton’s budget transparency measure is now law A new Illinois law sponsored by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) will mandate transparency and accuracy in the governor’s annual budget proposal.

The governor recently signed Cullerton’s House Bill 5814, which will force all future governors’ offices to record late interest payments as a separate line item in agency appropriations.

The law will paint a clearer picture of the state’s financial standing and slow the depletion of funding needed to provide vital services to Illinois residents.

“All future governors will be forced to present realistic appropriations budgets in the future thanks to this bill,” Cullerton said. “We need to make sure governors, regardless of political party, do not attempt to hide behind phony numbers.”

Currently, most late payment interest penalties accrue at a rate of 12 percent per month for bills unpaid after 90 days, while health care bills accumulate interest at a rate of 9 percent after 30 days.

The interest penalties are paid

from the same appropriation line, depleting the amount a state agency can spend for its operations. Cullerton’s measure forces the governor’s budget to include separate line item requests to for prompt pay interest payments.

The comptroller’s January 2018 Debt Transparency Report confirmed that taxpayers owe approximately $887 million in interest penalties despite paying out over $140 million in penalties in 2017.

“As legislators, we can’t negotiate a responsible budget when we don’t know how much money is owed or where it is going,” Cullerton said. “Utilizing responsible accounting practices in state government will allow the citizens of Illinois to know how and where their valuable tax dollars are spent.”

This bipartisan measure is an initiative of Comptroller Susana Mendoza and is supported by the Better Government Association.

House Bill 5814 passed the House and Senate with unanimous support and goes into effect immediately.

The 2019 Awards Program On February 5, 2019, the top middle level and high school volunteers from each state and the District of Columbia will be named State Honorees. They will receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., with a parent or guardian for four days of recognition events from May 4-7, 2019.

In Washington, a distinguished national selection committee will name 10 of the 102 State Honorees as America’s top youth volunteers of the year.

These National Honorees will receive additional awards of $5,000, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations, and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

Several Distinguished Finalists in each state will receive bronze medallions, and runners-up will receive Certificates of Excellence. Local Honorees selected by schools and participating organizations for state-level judging will be presented with Certificates of Achievement. They will also receive President’s Volunteer Service Awards if they have served the minimum number of volunteer hours to qualify (26 hours for age 10 and younger, 50 hours for ages 11-15 and 100 hours for older students).

The Blazers were fifth out of 16 teams at the Metea Valley tournament and also took third out of eight teams at the recent Willowbrook tournament.

Senior outside hitter Nina Muell and junior outside hitter Jess D’Ambrose were named to the all-tournament team at Metea Valley.

Sophomore middle blocker Ally Severino was tops in blocks with 17, while D’Ambrose and senior setter Sam Pociecha were tied for the team lead in service aces with 22. Junior defensive specialist Pauline Wirbicki had a team-high 121 digs and junior setter Amy Reyes had a team-best 170 assists.

“We are expanding our versatility on offense,” said Addison Trail coach Dan Styler. “We’ve had great balance statistically in a few matches and an imbalance scoring in other matches.

Typically, our team performs better in matches where we engage all our offensive weapons.”

Styler lauded the team’s recent defensive play. “Our defense has been gritty and it’s the best I’ve seen in my time coaching on the varsity level,” he said. “Routinely, other coaches praise our ability to stretch plays with our defensive effort. We still have room for growth, Specifically, our blocking technique needs more consistency. However, we are very pleased with our effort.”

Styler also has seen his group step things up on the mental side of the game. “Our players are improving their volleyball IQ on a daily basis.

They are asking great questions and have a better understanding of responding to schemes of opposing teams,” he said. “Given the fact we are smaller than most teams we compete against, we are gaining an edge in the strategic element of playing in most matches.”

Styler likes the progress he’s seen through the first 16 matches of the season. “Our kids are tough,” he said. “They don’t make excuses and are eager to compete in every match.

In each of the 16 matches, our players have battled. Our execution may not always be perfect, but we have an opportunity in every match to disrupt the opposing side of the net.”

D’Ambrose had 13 kills in the win against Willowbrook, while Katrina Bielanski had nine kills and Muell had six. Muell also had 20 digs, while Wirbicki had 10 digs. Pociecha had three aces and 19 assists, while Reyes had 18 assists.

D’Ambrose had nine kills and Muell had eight kills against Glenbard East. D’Ambrose and Wirbicki each had 12 digs.

Fenton boys cross-country team looking for more success Elizondo leads way for Bison runners

The Fenton boys cross-country team is not lacking for talent.

Coach Patrick Fritsch’s squad returns a pair of runners from last year’s team that qualified for the Class 2A state meet and took third in the Metro Suburban Conference.

Back are state runners Sam Elizondo (junior) and Chris Zavala (senior).

Elizondo was Fenton’s sixth runner on the state team, while Zavala was the seventh runner.

Other key contributors for the Bison this year will be sophomore Matt Sisto, senior Nathan Exconde, juniors Jimmy Palumbo and Ivan Sosa, along with sophomore Chris Kovich.

“Last year we relied heavily on a tight pack split to qualify for our sixth state meet in seven seasons,” said Fritsch. “After losing our entire top-five to graduation or transfer, we will have to rely even more on a tight pack to make a return trip to the state meet.”

Elizondo, Fritsch said, will be the team’s No. 1 runner, “and will be looking to lead by example for our younger runners,” he noted.

Fritsch is hopeful Zavala and sophomore Sisto will be able to finish within 15-20 seconds of Elizondo.

Willowbrook girls volleyball team defeats Morton Warriors off to 2-1 start in conference play

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team recorded a recent 25-11, 25-22 West Suburban Conference Gold Division win against Morton.

The win moved the Warriors to 2-1 in conference play. Katie Linnig had three aces and seven assists, while Payton Ceh had two aces, one kill, 11 digs and one assist. Kaitlyn Karcz had five kills and one dig. Katelyn McCann had four kills and nine digs, while Grace Reckamp had seven assists and two digs.

In a 25-21, 25-11 WSC crossover loss to York, Linnig had two kills, one ace, three digs and six assists.

Ceh had two kills and 11 digs, while Karcz had five kills, two blocks and two digs. McCann had two kills, two aces and two digs. Reckamp had one kill, one block and six assists and Emma Barringotn had three kills, two blocks and one dig. The loss put Willowbrook at 7-11 overall.

Willowbrook also recently took second place at the Leyden invitational with Barrington having a strong tournament. “Emma led us at Leyden. Her hitting efficiency and kill percentage has been great every match since that invite,” said Willowbrook coach Irene Mason.

Barrington had 11 kills against Lane Tech. Karcz had 11 kill against Proviso West and five kills on 10 swings against Morton. Ceh led the Warriors in digs in each match during a five-match stretch. “She’s contributing a lot of points through her aggressive serve,” said Mason.

Through the team’s first 17 matches, McCann was leading the way with 81 kills. Ceh had 186 digs, while Karcz had 13 blocks. Elizabeth Bruschuk was tops in aces with 36 and Linnig had 161 assists.

Mason has noticed the team’s offense making strides forward. “Our offense is getting stronger,” she said.

“Sam will be our No. 1 runner and with continued improvement could qualify for state as an individual if the team does not qualify,” said Fritsch. “Chris Zavala also has a chance of qualifying. He really is increasing his training load this season and hopes to peak at the right time.

Matt Sisto has made great strides after a successful freshman year. He will be a key contributor on our team for the next three years.”

The coach added Exconde and juniors Jimmy Palumbo and Ivan Sosa form a tight 4-6 pack. “Those three will have to finish within 1 minute, 20 seconds of Sam to have a chance to compete,” Fritsch explained.

Fritsch added the team’s main focus this season is to push beyond preconceived limits. “In order to push

ourselves to the next level, the student-athletes must push themselves further than they ever have before,” he said. “Many of our runners are being asked to step into a role that might challenge them beyond their current capabilities. But one of the most important things a young athlete can possess is a belief that with dedication and hard work, anything can be achieved.”

Fritsch said the team has its sights set on an upper-tier finish in the conference. “With the Metro Suburban Conference going through another realignment, the battle for the conference title will be very interesting,” he said. “I think a solid goal is to finish in the top three at our conference meet, but with a few new teams in our division, the order of teams could

vary greatly. Our main focus is on the sectional meet. We are looking to finish in the top five as a team to make a return trip to the state meet.

In order for this to be successful, we must have great races from our first three runners with our 4-6 runners less than 1 minute, 20 seconds back.”

Fenton ran at the Fenton Early Bird Invite where it took 11th. Elizondo was 43rd with a time of 18:09. At the DePaul College Prep Invite, Fenton was eighth and Elizondo took 16th with a time of 17;26. At the Warren invitational, Fenton took 17th with Elizondo finishing 41st with a time of 16:57.

Fenton runs at the Peoria invitational Saturday and the Elmwood Park invitational a week from Saturday.
