Building to include community visitor center

Construction has begun on a new clubhouse and visitor center at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s The Preserve at Oak Meadows in Addison. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday, Sept. 17 to mark the occasion.

“We took 10 years because we rebuilt this course,” said Forest Preserve District President Daniel Hebreard. “It now holds 20 million gallons more flood capacity for the community, and now it does not flood out when you’re coming to play 18 holes, and we increased our beautiful natural resources to truly make this a fantastic golf preserve.”

Forest Preserve District Commissioner Marsha Murphy, District 1, thanked local officials for supporting the project.

“I didn’t think I’d ever stand before you on this wonderful day,” Murphy said. “It’s going to be an absolutely spectacular building when it’s finished, and it’s going to complement our golf preserve.”

DuPage Forest Preserve District commissioners hired Pepper Construction as project construction manager to deliver the project at a price not to exceed $12.6 million.

Student accused of threatening York High School

Last week, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth said that a male York High School student had been accused of posting a threatening Snapchat message directed at the school.

The juvenile, who is an Elmhurst resident, appeared at a detention hearing, where Judge Robert Anderson ordered that he be placed on home detention. He has been charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 Felony. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 23, 2019 for status.

According to the State’s Attorney’s report, it is alleged that on Monday, Sept. 16, the juvenile, who is 15 years old and therefore, not named, posted a video message on Snapchat in which he reportedly threatened the school. The video shows the juvenile allegedly holding what appears to be a rifle, later determined to be an air-soft rifle, while making threatening remarks against the school.

The following day, DuPage County authorities became aware of the post and began an investigation, which led to the juvenile. He was taken into custody at York High School without incident.

“The safety and well-being of our children and their teachers remains a top priority of my administration,” Berlin said. “Any threat, or even the perception of a threat of violence directed at a school will immediately

be investigated and if found credible, charged accordingly “I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their quick response and apprehension of the suspect in this case.”

Police warn community threats are serious Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth released a communiqué announcing the incident that reminding the community that Internet threats are taken very serious.

“Think before you post,” Ruth said. “On Tuesday, September 17, [we] were alerted to a school related Internet threat. A York High School student was pictured with an Airsoft gun referencing school show and tell.

“Detectives apprehended the teen, met with the teen’s father, and are working with school officials for further action.”

Based on the investigation, Ruth said it is believed that this was an isolated incident and that the teen poses no credible threat to others.

The post has since been removed from Snapchat.

“Elmhurst police would like to remind students and parents that these threats are taken seriously by the police and school officials,” Ruth said.

“The consequences for these actions are enforced and students should be mindful of what they post.”

State lawmakers seek to cap insulin prices

Ten years ago, Megan Blair was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

“I remember standing at the pharmacy counter with my mom,” she said. “When the pharmacist rang up the prescription, he let us know that the 30-day supply of insulin that I needed would be about $800.

I looked at my mom and my mom looked at me.”

Blair, who is now 27 and lives in Harristown, about eight miles west of Decatur, is one of an estimated 1.3 million people in Illinois coping with diabetes, as well as the high cost of keeping it under control.

“Come to find out that the fact that I was diagnosed as a Type 1 insulin-dependent person wouldn’t be the hardest battle I would have to face the rest of my life,” she said. “Trying to make a living, have a family and learn how to come up with $800 a month on insulin to keep me alive would actually be the biggest challenge of my life.”

Blair spoke Sept. 17 at a news con-

ference in Springfield surrounded by Democratic state lawmakers who are pushing for a bill that would bring down the out-of-pocket cost for insulin for many, but not all, diabetes patients in Illinois.

“The cost of insulin clearly is breaking families that we represent,” said state Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, one of the main sponsors of a bill that would cap the out-of-pocket cost of insulin at $100 for a 30-day supply.

“Ultimately what has to happen is our Congress and our president have to act on the runaway cost of pharmaceutical drugs,” Manar said. “Senate Bill 667 (Amendment 1), we hope, addresses an issue immediately in Illinois and serves as a stepping stone to a larger reform.”

Manar and fellow-Democrat Rep. Will Guzzardi, of Chicago, introduced the language of the bill in late May, and they hope to see it passed during the upcoming veto session that begins Oct. 28.

The bill comes on the heels of unsuccessful attempts during the

regular spring session to impose even tighter controls on the cost of prescription drugs across the board in Illinois, proposals that met stiff opposition from the pharmaceutical industry.

The new bill, Manar said, focuses exclusively on insulin because of the scope of the problem and the number of people it affects.

Citing figures from the Health Care Cost Institute, Manar said the average price of insulin in the United States nearly doubled between 2012 and 2016, rising to 25 cents per unit. For someone using an average amount of 60 units per day, that translates to an increase from $7.80 a day to $15 a day.

That’s a significantly higher cost than what people in other countries pay for the same drug. Manar noted that a single vial of one common form of insulin, Humalog, costs $20 in Japan and $31.60 in Canada. But in the United States, it costs $135.50, in large part because drug costs are

Gaming Board urges changes in law authorizing Chicago casino

By Peter Hancock The Illinois Gaming Board said Sept. 16 that state lawmakers need to change a law they enacted earlier this year if they ever hope to see a casino developed in the city of Chicago.

That vote came in response to a feasibility study released in August that said such a casino would not be feasible given the “onerous tax and fee structure” that lawmakers imposed.

At its regular monthly meeting in Chicago, the board voted unanimously to adopt a resolution stating that, “based on results of the study as required by the Illinois Gambling Act, the board recommends that the General Assembly consider making modifications to the terms of the Chicago casino license authorized under the Illinois Gambling Act.” Before lawmakers passed a massive gambling expansion bill this year, Illinois allowed up to only 10 “riverboat” casinos. Those casinos pay taxes to the state ranging from 15 percent to 50 percent of their “adjusted gross receipts.”

Under the gambling expansion bill enacted this year, lawmakers authorized six more land-based casinos, including one in Chicago. However, according to the bill, in addition to the taxes and fees that all casinos pay, the Chicago casino would be required to pay an additional 33.3 percent “privilege tax.”

That would bring the effective tax rate on a Chicago casino to roughly 72 percent, the report stated.

“To the extent a casino operator could pare down expenses and realize modest revenue and profits from non-gaming amenities … total enterprise profit margin would, in a best-case scenario, likely equate to a few pennies on the dollar—and that would require the casino to be developed without incurring any debt as we believe no traditional financing would be available for such a development as debt servicing would likely well exceed any modest profits generated,” the report stated.

The report was written by the consulting firm Union Gaming Analytics and it was delivered to the Gaming Board Aug. 12. The board then forwarded copies to Gov. J.B. Pritzker and legislative leaders.

The consultants also said a Chicago casino would have the potential to be the highest-grossing casino in the state, generating receipts far in excess of the current top casino, Rivers Casino in Des Plaines.

“This study provides valuable insights that will help make sure a Chicago casino works right for both the city and state,” Pritzker’s spokeswoman, Emily Bittner, said in a statement at the time. “We look forward to working with stakeholders, including the mayor and General Assembly, to refine this approach and ensure that we maximize the opportunities for jobs for residents and revenue to address our financial obligations.”

The Preserve at Oak Meadows underwent a major two-year restoration project that improved storm water management and water quality for Salt Creek, enhanced habitat for fish and other aquatic species, and created a premier 18-hole public golf destination. It reopened for a brief preview season in late summer 2017

and had a full grand-opening season in 2018.

The property was reconfigured to reduce flooding in nearby communities by holding an additional 20 million gallons of storm water from Salt Creek during flood events while minimizing flood damage to the course. Only 15% of the 288 acres is dedicated to fairways, greens and teeing areas, and the number of holes was reduced from 27 to 18. In addition, the project created 25 acres of wetlands and 43 acres of riparian habitat and restored 13 acres along the Salt Creek corridor to improve water quality and plant and animal diversity.

Environmentally friendly features of the building include a green roof, bird-safe glass, sustainably sourced wood, LED lighting systems, and compliance with ComEd’s energy

Commissioners also approved installing a solar power system on the cart storage building at The Preserve at Oak Meadows. The solar arrays will produce enough electricity to fully power the facility’s 75 golf carts, making The Preserve the first golf course in the U.S. with a fully solar-powered golf car fleet.

The federal government has approved Illinois’ request for disaster relief in 27 of 32 counties affected by flooding this year, Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office announced Sept. 19.

While the public assistance will allow county and municipal governments that have exhausted their available local resources to apply for grants and loans, a request for individual assistance that would benefit homeowners and business owners affected by flooding in 22 counties is still under review, Pritzker’s office said.

It is the first time the state has received a federal disaster declaration since 2013. The declaration required a recommendation from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and approval from Republican U.S. President Donald Trump.

“My administration stands with every resident and business impacted by this year’s flooding, and we will help our communities rebuild stronger and more resilient,” Pritzker, a Democrat, said in a statement. “I want to thank our congressional delegation for their advocacy, as well as our state and federal partners, for their help securing the additional resources I requested.”

Some of the lead negotiators of the law to legalize adult-use marijuana in Illinois are seeking to provide clarity on a provision that gives local municipalities control over which facilities, if any, would be authorized to allow cannabis consumption.

The topic is at the top of the discussion list for potential follow-up legislation, commonly referred to as a trailer bill, which could be heard when the General Assembly returns for veto session in late October, the original bill’s Senate sponsor said.

That senator is Heather Steans, a Chicago Democrat who said it is “certainly not the intent” of House Bill 1438, the bill which legalized adultuse marijuana, to allow consumption at public places such as restaurants.

“If we need any clarification to make that crystal clear, we will do that,” Steans said during a phone interview. “We know we’ll be doing something along those lines, most likely.”

While the bill prohibits “smoking cannabis in any place where smoking is prohibited under the Smoke Free Illinois Act,” mitigating language appears in Section 55-25 of the more than 600-page bill.

It reads: “A unit of local government … may regulate the on-premises consumption of cannabis at or in a cannabis business establishment within

its jurisdiction in a manner consistent with this Act. A cannabis business establishment or other entity authorized or permitted by a unit of local government to allow on-site consumption shall not be deemed a public place within the meaning of the Smoke Free Illinois Act.” That language means local municipalities have the right to exempt certain facilities from the Smoke Free Illinois Act, which otherwise bans smoking in virtually all public places.

Deputy Gov. Christian Mitchell, who was one of the leading forces in Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration in negotiating the bill, said the local control over social use language was put in place to prevent “de facto prohibition” of cannabis consumption for apartment dwellers who, if their landlord banned consumption, would conceivably have no place to legally partake.

“We wanted to leave room in the bill for locals to deal with social consumption as they saw fit,” Mitchell said in a phone interview.

“I think the concern from a lot of folks was that, especially in poor areas, areas with more rental housing which are going to be disproportionately people of color, for example, if that housing, by the legal power of the landlord, bans the ability to consume cannabis on premises, you can end up with a de facto prohibition for some of those folks.”

While the bill clearly defines a cannabis business establishment as any licensed “cultivation center, craft grower, processing organization, dispensing organization, or transporting organization,” exactly which other entities a local government can exempt from the Smoke Free Illinois Act is not clearly defined.

Mitchell said discussions of public use generally revolved around the establishment of facilities similar to hookah bars or cigar lounges, which have legal exemptions in the Smoke Free Illinois Act to allow for tobacco consumption on their premises.

“That’s the context in which I’ve seen it contemplated. The restaurant context isn’t one that came up,” he said. “But I imagine with the Smoke Free Illinois Act, that would probably be more problematic.”

Sen. Jason Barickman, a Bloomington Republican who supported the bill, recalled discussions of allowing social consumption at private clubs or licensed cannabis facilities, but not public facilities such as restaurants.

“There’s a separate prohibition that is blanketed throughout the law which says that use and consumption cannot occur in public or in public places,” he said in a phone interview. “So if you’re operating a restaurant, that’s a public place, and the law would prohibit that.”

Steans said she remembered discussions of allowing cannabis use at certain licensed facilities as well, but trailer bill discussions could add some clarity to the matter.

“We want to make sure that everyone is on the same page and that the law reads exactly the way we want it to,” she said.

Steans, Mitchell and Barickman were in general agreement that “the law is the law,” and any other language involved in a trailer bill would be mostly technical in nature. For Mitchell, that means “not relitigating” issues already decided in the initial passage of the bill.

“What we have said to everyone is that the trailer bill for veto is going to be highly technical stuff that needs to change in order to ensure a smooth roll into Jan. 1, (2020). It is not a forum to relitigate issues on which folks lost out negotiations,” he said.

Pro bono attorneys needed to address ‘Justice Gap’ According to the report “The Justice Gap,” low-income Americans receive no or inadequate legal help for 86% of their non-criminal legal problems. These individuals include senior citizens, veterans, and those with disabilities. They may be experiencing housing problems or domestic violence, be trying to obtain disability benefits or immigration status after experiencing violence, or be a senior in need of advanced directives to avoid being defrauded.

Currently, there are not enough volunteer attorneys in Illinois to help them.

This shortage of pro bono attorneys not only affects the number of low-income or disadvantaged people served, but also the disposition of justice. Studies consistently show that the outcome of contested matters often turns on whether a person has an attorney.

The Pro Bono Network (PBN) has been working since 2011 to combat this shortage by expanding the pool

of attorneys available to represent those who cannot afford legal services. PBN recruits, trains, places, and supports lawyers who want to be of service but have limitations on their availability or resources.

These include attorneys who are on career breaks, have retired, or are solo practitioners. The attorneys can work from their home or at a number of locations throughout DuPage and Cook counties. Malpractice insurance is provided.

PBN invites interested DuPage County attorneys to learn more about our work, at an open house in Glen Ellyn on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Glen Ellyn Public Library. PBN also will be conducting trainings for specific DuPage projects later in October.

We are simply dealt our hand and we live it out.

There are positives and negatives to each family position. But one thing is clear. The oldest child has it the easiest.

The oldest child has a new car seat, new crib, new toys and brand new parents. These parents haven’t had the time or experience to develop bad habits like wiping the dropped pacifier on a semi clean T-shirt before returning it to baby’s mouth. New parents sanitize the pacifier every time it hits the floor.

In the best of circumstances, oldest children have the attention of two parents. Mom or dad (and sometimes both) jump up at 2 a.m. when baby produces the slightest of whimpers in their sleep.

Local wig company holds contest in October Cancer patients invited to enter to win free wig

There is a local business that offers a special service to cancer patients, which is offering a giveaway contest to help those in need.

According to owner and president Kimberly Johnson, Chrysalis Custom Hair is a wig salon that creates custom made wigs for all women, but especially focuses on those who are going through cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, when patients often lose their hair.

Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Johnson is soon accepting entries into her 5th Annual Wig Giveaway event, which is a chance for cancer patients to receive a donated, washed and refurbished wig. The purpose of the Chrysalis Custom Hair Wig Giveaway is to redistribute donated wigs to women experiencing medical hair loss in need of a wig, according to Johnson.

“The skilled and experienced stylists at Chrysalis Custom Hair have carefully washed, refurbished and styled each wig,” she said. “The giveaway is made possible through generous wig donations from women and their families.”

Registration opens at midnight on Oct. 1, 2019 and closes at 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2019. To enter visit ChrysalisCustomHair.com and click on Wig Giveaway.

“Insulin isn’t optional,” said Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur. “It’s life-or-death for people, and it is so totally unfair that people are having to choose between insulin and food for themselves or their family.”

Blair said she is among many diabetes patients who routinely ration their insulin doses, taking less than the recommended dose, in order to stretch out their supply, something that often results in subsequent hospitalization.

“And not just the easy trip to the emergency room,” she said. “It usually ended up with a twoor three-day stay in the (intensive care unit).”

Leroy Jordan, 77, of Springfield, said he also struggles with the cost of insulin to treat his Type 1 diabetes. He said he was a grown adult when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile, or insulin-dependent diabetes, a form of the disease that usually appears during childhood but which can develop later in life.

“This cost thing is just terrible,” he said.

“When youngsters are born with diabetes, we that have it later in life kind of say, ‘Oh boy, I’m very fortunate.’ But it’s killing us too.”

Senate Bill 667 would not lower the cost of insulin for all patients in Illinois. It would apply only to those on publicly-funded health plans— primarily Medicare, Medicaid and the state employee health plan. Supporters of the bill were not immediately able to say how many people that would cover, but it would not cover people on private employer-based health plans because those are regulated under federal law.

In a statement, Tiffany Haverly, spokesperson for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a group that lobbies for the pharmaceutical industry, did not comment specifically on the bill. But she said the industry sympathizes with patients struggling to afford their medications and that support is available in the form of discounts and rebates to those who cannot afford their drugs.

“In addition to supporting commonsense solutions to lower Illinoisans’ out-of-pocket costs, PhRMA recently launched a new tool— the Medicine Assistance Tool, or MAT—to connect eligible patients with over 900 public and private assistance programs,” she said. “We encourage any patient struggling to afford their medicines to visit mat.org to see what resources might be available to them.”

Fourth grade teacher Kim Groth at Lake Park School works with a small group of students to decode words. The students were discussing how a prefix like “mis-“ changes the meaning of the word that it is added to. These girls lit up when they compared the word “read” to “misread.”

Students in Fran O’Brien’s 4th grade class at Lake Park School participated in a whole group read-aloud exercise that helped them explore how character traits developed in the story. The students discussed the time setting for the story, sharing clues until they figured out it was not set in modern times. That conversion led to a math moment, in which one student went to the board to subtract and find out how long ago 1937 was!

At Lake Park School, Jenny Poremba’s 5th grade class engaged in show-and-tell time. This student was sharing information about his collection of beyblades and answering questions from his classmates about his collection. This classic classroom exercise helps students practice their presentation skills, learning to be comfortable speaking to an audience.

Warriors pound Leyden 42-7 to move to 3-1 District 88 bragging rights Team builds a 42-0 lead by halftime The Willowbrook football team improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the West Suburban Gold Conference by thrashing Leyden 42-7 on Friday in Northlake.

The Warriors raced to a 42-0 halftime lead in the Eagles’ homecoming game. The lead of at least 40 points triggered a running clock throughout the second half. Leyden (1-3 overall, 1-1 in the conference) scored its only touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors will play their home-

coming game this Friday against District 88 rival Addison Trail. The Blazers will enter the game at 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Senior quarterback Sam Tumilty threw four touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores during the first half against Leyden. Tumilty fired a pair of scoring passes to senior Everett Stubblefield. One of those connections covered about 80 yards.

Addison Trail girls’ volleyball team defeats Leyden, Glenbard East Blazers hit above .300 in both victories

The Addison Trail girls’ volleyball team continued its winning ways with a pair of wins against Leyden and Glenbard East.

In a 2-0 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory against Leyden (25-10, 25-14), Jess D’Ambrose had two aces to lead a six-ace Blazer attack. D’Ambrose also had eight kills and hit .412 in the match.

Katrina Bielanski had seven kills, while Ally Severino and Mia Johnson each had six kills. Johnson hit .750 in the contest, while Severino was at .500. Addison Trail hit .390 as a team in the conference match.

Pauline Wirbicki passed at a 2.67 clip on a 3.0 scale. Severino added two blocks, while Amy Reyes had 22 assists and six digs. D’Ambrose led the team with 14 digs. Bielanski and Wirbicki each finished with six digs,

while Johnson had four digs.

Addison Trail also defeated Glenbard East in two sets (25-11, 25-18) in non-conference action. Nicole Bartosik and Wirbicki each had two aces. Addison Trail had seven aces against only five service errors.

The Blazers hit .333 in the match.

Bielanski had eight kills and hit .368. D’Ambrose and Johnson each had six kills, with Johnson hitting .308. Severino had five kills and hit .714. Reyes finished with 18 asissts.

Bielanski had 10 digs, as did Wirbicki. Reyes had nine digs, while D’Ambrose finished with seven digs.

The two wins put Addison Trail at 12-5 overall and the Leyden win moved the Blazers to 2-0 in WSC Gold play.

Coach Dan Styler noted Addison Trail had a combined 53 kills against only 10 attacking errors in the two wins. “We had a really impressive

week offensively,” he said.

In both matches, Styler added, Addison Trail’s team attacking percentage was north of .300. “When our offense is in rhythm, we can be a threat against any team,” he said.

The news on the defensive front was equally good, Styler added. “I was really happy with our defense and transition game in the two matches,” he said. “Our players are moving really well together and showing a strong sense of court awareness with spacing and designated responsibilities.”

Styler said Addison Trail is preparing for a key two-week stretch of matches. “We are heading into a two-week stretch where we will play tough teams such as Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South,” he said. “We are battle-tested and excited to continue to raise our level of play heading into October.”

Warrior boys’ soccer team wins pair of games on penalty kicks Mahone scores game-winning PK against Eisenhower

The Willowbrook boys’ soccer team gave fans plenty of excitement in a pair of recent victories.

The Warriors defeated Eisenhower out of Blue Island and Chicago Little Village, both via penalty kicks. The two wins came in the PepsiCo Showdown event. Willowbrook also lost to Chicago Solario in PepsiCo action.

Willowbrook was 4-5-1 overall and 0-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action through late last week.

In assessing his team’s recent progress, coach Dan Riskind zeroed in on defense.

“We are getting better with team defense,” he said. “We have really been emphasizing that and we’ve been keeping scores down. We’re trying to settle in the back third and back half of our defense and looking to counter attack.”

Riskind noted Willowbrook re-

cently moved to a 4-4-2 formation and moved Devin Guallpa to center midfield, along with Kalep Martinez.

Kevin Kapica and Brian Fuentes are the team’s center backs.

“It’s a work in progress,” said Riskind. “We are learning when to press and when to draw back and defend.

It’s been a big focus for us. We have a lot of room for improvement, but we’ve also improved.”

Offensively, striker Norm Deci scored two goals in a recent game. “Norm has been tearing it up lately,” Riskind said.

Riskind also has been pleased with the play of attacking midfielder Dorian Mahone. “He has created a lot of chances and is assisting on a lot of Norm’s goals.”

Riskind was pleased with how the team maintained its composure in the win against Eisenhower.

“I liked our mental attack,” he said. “We got down by a goal against

Eisenhower and came back to go up 2-1. They scored in the last five minutes and then we won it on penalty kicks. The guys are doing a good job of working on the next play. They are playing in the present. I like the vibe on the team. They have good attitudes. We’re making progress. We’re playing a lot of good teams with good players. We are working hard, doing a lot of film study and making steady progress.”

Fenton girls’ cross country team makes progress at DePaul Prep meet

The Fenton girls’ cross country team had plenty of positives come out of the recent DePaul Prep Invitational.

Fenton’s varsity team took eighth out of 16 teams, while the frosh-soph squad was fifth out of nine teams.

More importantly, 13 of the 18 Fenton runners in the event enjoyed personal-record times.

Freshman Tania Miranda took sixth place in the frosh-soph meet and earned a medal, while Samantha Matuk was seventh and also earned a medal.

In the varsity race, sophomore Ally Durkowski was 30th in the 125-runner field. Junior Audrey Benitez took

32nd, while junior Lupita Honorato was 34th.

“Right now, we are healthy and staying focused,” coach Frank Kekstadt said.

Kekstadt noted the varsity lineup will feature a different look every meet leading up to the Upstate Eight Conference meet.

Fenton was slated to run Saturday at the Loyola University Lakefront meet followed by a trek to Peoria on Oct. 5 for another invitational.

“My goal is to have our freshmen gain experience and our upperclassmen to continue to drop time before we reach the regional meet,” Kekstadt said.

Fenton girls’ volleyball team defeats Elgin Boys’ golf team preparing for postseason

The Fenton girls’ volleyball team got off to a 2-1 start in Upstate Eight Conference play after a recent league victory against Elgin.

Fenton also recently competed in the West Chicago and Ridgewood tournaments. Fenton defeated that same Elgin team, while losing to Woodstock, West Chicago and Dundee-Crown at West Chicago.

The Bison defeated Ridgewood and Lisle, and lost to Chicago Taft, Woodlands Academy and DePaul Prep at the Ridgewood event.

Through late last week, Fenton was 13-8 overall.

“We are starting to get back on track,” Fenton coach Kelly Torres said. “We had a couple girls who went through a rough stretch, but

have really got it going in the last week. We’re mostly working on timing issues right now.”

One key area of focus for the Bison has been on the defensive end.

“It still needs work and that is what we are focusing on,” Torres said.

“Each match we try to find the combination that is working best to give us the best defense/serve-receive we can have that day.”

Setter Noha Zaggoti continues to wow the coaching staff with her play.

“Noha is having an incredible season,” Torres said. “Most officials we have, as well as opposing coaches comment on how good she is playing. She has put together quite the season so far.”

Junior Alexis Mendoza and sophomore Hailey Miller also are making key contributions.

“We put Alexa in the libero jersey at Ridgewood and she had an amazing day,” Torres noted. “She was solid in serve-receive and kept a lot of balls alive with her defense.”

Torres called Miller the team’s utility knife. “We can put Hailey pretty much anywhere on the court and she produces,” she said. “She has been playing good defense, as well as really getting aggressive with her attacks on offense.”

Torres said Fenton is making the needed adjustments with the postseason inching closer and closer.

“We have hit a little bit of a struggle period the last two weekends,” she said. “However, facing some adversity now will help us when regionals get here. We were having it pretty easy the first 10 matches, and now we see we need to turn it up

even higher. We are looking forward to seeing how much more we can improve before regionals.”

Fenton played Glenbard South earlier this week and hosts Leyden today before heading to the IMSA tournament Saturday.

Boys golf Through late last week, the Fenton boys’ golf team was 3-3 overall and in Upstate Eight Conference play.

In recent conference action, Fenton downed Elgin 186-262 and upended Streamwood 183-226.

“We are getting better with fairways and greens in regulation,” coach Rick Johnson said. “Our short game has improved significantly. We spend a great deal of time playing games on the practice green.”

Fenton has been receiving improved play on the links from the

likes of junior Patrick Block, sophomore Andrew Hoffing, junior Sigi Garza and freshman Taylor Siekierski. “They have all started to figure out how to get around a golf course,” Johnson said. “We are still very young.”

Johnson said Fenton has its sights set on the Upstate Eight Conference tournament Oct. 2. “We are looking to do something special,” he said.

Boys soccer Fenton’s boys’ soccer team was 4-5-1 through its first 10 contests and was 0-2-1 in Upstate Eight Conference play.

In recent action, Fenton tied Glenbard South, beat Eisenhower and Manteno, and lost to Timothy Christian. The Eisenhower, Manteno and Timothy games were part of the PepsiCo Showdown event.

The Willowbrook girls’ golf team continues to push forward.

Coach Jim White has been impressed with the team’s season-long improvement. Willowbrook was 3-7 overall in duals and 2-6 in West Suburban Conference action through late last week.

“We are competing against some of the best teams,” he said.

Sophomore Emma Rattana continues to shoot in the high 30s in the ninehole events. “Emma is our most consistent,” White said.

Junior Peyton Mitrick and freshman Mickey Martens also have been contributing of late for the Warriors.

“We are getting more low scores from a variety of players,” White ex-

plained. “They are all challenging each other. The freshmen have come a long way with competing and understanding the game more.”

White said Rattana, Mitrick and Martens are mainstays on the scorecard. “They shoot consistent low scores and are trying to make the all-conference team and make a run in the state series,” he said. “They are focused and determined to do better, as well as assisting the younger players.”

White also has been impressed with the team’s chemistry this season. “They are fun to watch,” he said. “Their successes are celebrated by everyone.”

The Willowbrook girls’ volleyball team continues to play well.

The Warriors racked up a pair of recent wins against Proviso West and Morton to up their overall mark to 125.

In a 25-12, 25-4 West Suburban Conference crossover victory against Proviso West, Natalie Cipriano registered four kills, one block and one dig.

Sofia Espinosa had three aces and five digs. Katie Linnig recorded one kill, five aces, four assists and five digs.

Payton Ceh had two kills, one ace and 16 digs. Alejandra Lopez finished with one ace and four digs. Laine Degnan had two kills and one dig. Kyla Ostrowski had four kills and two digs, while Grace Reckamp had two kills, one dig and nine assists. Stephanie Dasbach had six kills and one block.

The Warriors were 25-14, 25-10 West Suburban Conference Gold Division winners against Morton. Cipri-

ano had six kills, one block and one dig. Linnig had one ace, six assists and three digs. Ceh had three kills, two aces, 15 digs and one assist. Ostrowski had one kill, one ace and two digs.

Boys cross country The Willowbrook boys’ cross-country team ran at the recent Peoria First to Finish meet. Coach TJ Artman noted seven of the eight Warrior varsity runners in the meet ran a personal best.

“We ran well,” he said. “We took a young team filled with first-timers down there and they ran their best marks of the season.”

Junior Tyler King continues to be a key cog for Willowbrook. “Tyler is improving and leading the team,” Artman said.

Artman added the team is running well together in packs, “both in training as well as in competitions,” he said.

Willowbrook shot 349 as a team on the par-72 track. Senior Logan Rattana led the way with an 84 and took seventh overall in the tournament. Senior Utah Keehner had an 87, while junior Nick Cipriano and freshman Brett Vandergrift each shot 89s.

Willowbrook also dropped a 152177 WSC Gold match to Downers Grove South at par-36 Village Greens.

The loss put Willowbrook at 6-3 in duals this season.

Rattana shot 41, while Keehner finished with a 43. Vandergrift finished with a 46 and Cipriano had a 47.

Willowbrook competes in the Ryder Cup quad at The Preserve at Oak Meadows today and then faces Addison Trail in its annual 18-hole District 88 and WSC Gold dual at Prairie Bluff in Lockport.

The WSC Gold meet is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 1 back at Prairie Bluff.
