School is back in session at the Churchville Schoolhouse Fall open house planned at Historic one-room school

According to a release issued by the Elmhurst History Museum on behalf of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, the public is invited to an afternoon of music, history, and fun activities amid the quaint charm of the one-room school located at 3N784 Church Road in Bensenville.

The Churchville Schoolhouse Fall Open House will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to games and activities for all ages, including folk dancing, old-fashioned crafts and vintage contests, the Conrad Fischer Elementary School Singers will perform at 11:30 a.m. and at 1 p.m. The students have been performing for events at the Schoolhouse for several years and never fail to bring a unique show of song and dance that blends the historic with the modern.

District 88 honors summer graduates Before its Sept. 12 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education recognized Addison Trail and Willowbrook students for graduating from District 88 during its Summer Commencement celebration.

The Addison Trail students who graduated are Eleazar Rodriguez, Rigoberto Sanchez, Eric Silvestre, Emily Szabelski, Leslye Vargas and Alexis Villarreal. The Willowbrook students who graduated are Murtaza Ahmad, Saira Khan and Vincent Maldonado.

• School (Continued from front page) Page County as well as one of the few remaining one-room schoolhouses in the state of Illinois still standing on its original site. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1999, it is a wellpreserved example of typical mid-1800s rural schoolhouses built by local farmers and craftsmen.

The Schoolhouse sits on property, which was once part of the August Fischer family farm that was deeded to Addison Township around 1846. Children from the towns now known as Elmhurst, Bensenville, and Addison attended the school until 1930. The Schoolhouse was managed by Elmhurst School District 205 from 1988 to 2001, and was used to teach history lessons to students.

The City of Elmhurst took ownership in 2001, and an extensive renovation took place in cooperation with the Village of Bensenville. The restoration was completed in 2010, and today the Elmhurst History Museum staff—with the support of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation—presents hands-on educational history programs to schoolchildren, scout troops, and adult groups by appointment.

A study of the most recent IRS data shows that Illinois may be losing more people than nearly any other state and in nearly every demographic.

Center for Opportunity Urbanism Executive Director Joel Kotkin said his report on outmigration shows Illinois is hemorrhaging people of all ages and incomes, second only to New York.

Chicago’s superior transportation and amenities are no longer exclusive to the Second City, according to Kotkin.

can run a global business from Dallas just as easily as you can from Chicago.”

While Kotkin said some “blue” states like Oregon have gained a number of people due to the relatively low cost of living compared with neighboring California, the states gaining the most wealthy, working age people are traditionally low-tax, businessfriendly states like Texas, Florida, the Carolinas, Tennessee and North Dakota.

Elmhurst College jumps to No. 4 on U.S. NEWS best value list Ranked No. 10 among best regional universities, best colleges for veterans

U.S. News & World Report has released its most recently list of college rankings and Elmhurst Col-

lege has placed fourth in the Midwest among colleges and university with the best value for the money.

According to the publication’s Best Colleges rankings for 2017, released on Sept. 3, Elmhurst College shot up five spots this year in the Best Value Schools in the Midwest category, from No. 9 last year to No. 4 this year.

For the second year in a row, Elmhurst College has held its No. 10 spot in the Best Regional Univer-

sities category among 115 colleges and universities across the Midwest which provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s degree programs.

The rankings showed that 75 percent of Elmhurst students in 2015 received grants based on financial need. The College notes that, when other forms of aid are added to the picture, 99 percent of fulltime Elmhurst students received some form of financial assistance.

Shelly Ruzicka is the communications and development director at Arise Chicago, a nationally renowned interfaith workers’ rights organization. Arise has trained and organized low-wage, primarily im-

migrant workers across Chicagoland, enabling them to recover more than $6.9 million in stolen wages and compensation; and has led efforts to pass groundbreaking legislation at the city, county and state levels.

Thousands of miners and former miners marched on Washington, D.C., last week. They’re calling for a congressional bailout.

But there is a math problem for the pension system: Approximately 10,000 miners are still working, with nearly 120,000 miners drawing pension benefits.

said it would be better to get more miners working and wants Congress to end the Obama administration’s war on coal.

Illinois Coal Association President Phil Gonet said there is no doubt what Obama has done to coal mines and coal miners.

“There’s a war on coal,” Gonet said. “We’re being killed by the president. Our coal production is down 25 percent relative to where

we were last year at this time.”

Illinois’ coal-mining jobs are also down, with only 3,700 miners currently working in Illinois — 2,000 fewer than in 1995.

“The market for coal right now is bad because of the president’s war on coal and because of the low price of natural gas,” Gonet said. “Those have been in lockstep to work against us for the last about year-and-a-half in Illinois.”

Fantasy football – family style It’s the trending Sunday sensation more popular than selfies in restaurants or commercials during the Super Bowl. In a word, it’s fantasy football.

According to the New York Post, via the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker, roughly a quarter of the U.S. population played fantasy football last season.

Millions of those aficionados were women. That includes two at my house – my daughter and me. (Who doesn’t like a good fantasy?)

Every. One. Is. Doing. It. (You, me, all of us!) We’re drafting a team. Conducting scientific football research. Choosing a lineup.

Paying attention to the flex, and I’m not referring to football muscles.

We’re living the fantasy.

We tune in on Sunday (and Thursday and Monday) and hope to high heaven we can score enough points this week to beat our daughter’s team, which she’s aptly named

At least that’s how it goes at my house. We don’t call them Sunday fun-days for nothing.

My family is fairly low-key about the game. Many fantasy fanatics win and lose big bucks each week through online fantasy sites, which are games of skill and technically not gambling or illegal. I can assure you nothing illegal is going on at my house. We’re just competing for the family trophy.

That, and bragging rights.

While I’m relatively new to the adventure, the idea of fantasy football was conceived in 1962, with the first draft occurring in 1963 in Oakland, California. It was a small enterprise back then. Because of the intricacies of scoring by hand in the pre-smart phone era, the game grew gradually over the next few decades until the immediacy of Internet magic took hold. Fantasy football websites and apps have brought the game to the masses – including non-football types like me.

This is my second year at the game, so I’m pretty much a pro.

No matter that I came in last place last season. I was a rookie, and everyone knows you can’t expect too much during a rookie year. (My name’s Jill, not Ezekiel.)

During the off-season, I acquired a vast amount of knowledge about running backs – full and half; they run the ball.

It all boils down to grilling my husband and three boys who, unlike me, have all the qualities listed above. I figure if I ask them lots of questions, their pigskin know-how will transfer over to me via familial osmosis.

So far it’s working. They’re willing to provide me with insider insight as long as I make them nachos on game day. I figure it’s a fair trade. (Or maybe that’s a waiver?)

Some egregious examples of local officials using taxpayer dollars for entertainment and travel expenses has led to a new law that restricts the use of tax money for certain nongovernment activities.

A measure signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner completely prohibits local government officials from using taxpayer dollars for entertainment expenses.

State Rep. David McSweeney (R-Dist. 52) said the measure he advanced through the General Assembly also requires extra scrutiny on travel expenses. “And there’s no reason that government officials should spend money on entertainment, and they certainly should be very limited, and it has to be justified and subject to a public roll call by a

vote if they’re going to spend money on meals, travel and lodging.”

Edgar County Watchdogs cofounder Kirk Allen said he has found examples of this kind of spending going unchecked in several layers of government, from community college presidents to even state’s attorneys.

“It’s not just at the lower local levels. It’s all the way up to the very enforcers of our laws,” Allen said.

The measure could help restore public trust and keep property taxes from increasing.

Allen said the spending in question and a lack of oversight from boards and councils weakens public trust rapidly. “It’s compounded by malfeasance by these very elected officials as well.”

The measure takes effect Jan. 1, 2017.

No, I did not see. They of course are referring to Facebook. I do pop on to The Facebook usually every day (and I do like to call it THE Facebook), but I cannot keep up. I jump on to post something on my page or change my cover pic and that’s about it. I see what is right there before me, and often it is posts from people I do not even know. I don’t troll and scroll and search out people’s updates. I am not up to date on anyone’s goings-on, even my own family.

AT holds three fairs to prepare students for future College, Career, Activity Fairs offer many opportunities

Addison Trail recently hosted three fairs to engage students with the school and to help prepare them for future success.

A Student Activity Fair took place on Sept. 7, a College Fair took place on Sept. 14 and a Career Fair took place on Sept. 15.

The Activity Fair allowed students to learn more about the activities and clubs offered at Addison Trail, and 22 groups participated. Addison Trail has a nearly 70-percent participation rate in activities, athletic programs and clubs. If students cannot find a club in which they are interested, they have the opportunity to start a new one. Explore the Great River State Trail The Mississippi isn’t the only river focus along the Great River State Trail. It bridges 18 streams and channels coursing their way to the Mighty Mississippi. In the sleepy river town of Trempealeau you can watch tugboats finesse 400-foot-long barges through lock and dam No. 6. Nearby, Perrot State Park is a scenic wonder. In ancient times, its soaring bluffs were isolated from those on the western shore when torrents of glacial meltwater changed the river’s course.

It became a natural landmark for people from the sophisticated Native American Hopewell culture of 2,000 years ago, to the French explorer Nicholas Perrot in 1685. Just south of trails-end at Marshland, you can tour the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, a 5,600-acre riverside home for migratory waterfowl, herons, egrets and resident bald eagles.

The Willowbrook boys golf team recorded a recent 169-186 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory over Morton at par-32 Sugar Creek in Villa Park.

The win moved Willowbrook’s

dual-meet record to 3-4.

The Addison Trail football team evened its West Suburban Conference Gold Division record with a recent 34-28 victory over Downers Grove South in Week 4 action at Downers Grove.

Addison Trail moved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in WSC Gold play with the win.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Blazers.

Addison Trail stays on the road in Week 5 when it faces Leyden in another WSC Gold game.

Leyden comes into the tilt with an identical 2-2 mark after dropping a 38-13 WSC crossover contest to Lyons Township. The Eagles are 1-0 in WSC Gold play.

Willowbrook football The Willowbrook football team dropped to 2-2 with a 30-27 loss to

Hinsdale South at home.

The Warriors now are 1-1 in conference play and will head to Elmhurst Friday to face 1-3 York in the annual neighborhood game.

In Willowbrook’s Week 3 win against Addison Trail, quarterback MJ Ranieri was 8-for-9 for 126 yards and threw two touchdown passes.

Jack Jessen ran the ball 23 times for 197 yards and one touchdown.

Christopher Diaz ran 11 times for 97 yards and one touchdown, while Ranieri ran 10 times for 49 yards and also scored a rushing touchdown. Willowbrook ran the ball 50 times for 358 yards.

Jon Kelso caught three passes for 64 yards and one touchdown.

Khalif Copeland had one touchdown catch for 15 yards. Feddie Clay caught a pass for 28 yards and Nick Sabatino had two catches for 11 yards.

“Offensively we are much more aggressive in our attack right now,” said Fenton coach Kelly Kleidorfer. “Defensively our blockers are getting a touch on more balls than earlier in the season.”

Fenton has benefitted from the return of Rusiecka, who missed the first 13 matches of the season.

“Maggie has given the team a nice boost of energy,” said Kleidorfer.

“She has jumped right back in and had 14 kills in her first two matches.”

Fenton has matches this week against Aurora Central Catholic and Glenbrd South.

“With only a few weeks left until seeding for the state tournament, we would like to add some wins to our record to help improve our seed,” said Kleidorfer.

Addison Trail boys soccer team continues to roll

The Addison Trail boys soccer team continues to impress and finds itself on one of the biggest stages in the Chicagoland area.

The Blazers, who went 8-1 through their first nine games with their only loss to top-ranked Morton, will play for the PepsiCo Showdown championship in the Gatorade bracket against Crystal Lake South at Illinois Tech (IIT) near U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. Game time is 1 p.m.

Addison Trail reached the Pepsi final by scoring wins over Whitney Young, South Elgin and St. Ignatius.

Addison Trail is the No. 1 seed in the 16-team bracket, while Crystal Lake South is the No. 3 seed.

“It should be a good game,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini.

In the St. Ignatius victory, Addison Trail was down 2-1 and came back to win 3-2.

Dini noted the team has taken a step forward of late on the defensive end. “In those three Pepsi games we let in a total of two goals,” he said.

“We play good team defense. Three of our four starters on defense are seniors.”

“Edmond played for an academy team and this is his first year with us,” said Dini. “He’s 6-3 and is huge out there. He wins those 50-50 balls in the air and marks the other teams’ best players. He has the footwork and foot skills of someone a lot smaller. He has real good ball control and is real poised.”

Dini added the team also benefits from a senior-laden roster. “Out of the 18 guys on the team, 12 are seniors,” he said. “We have a lot of senior leadership. The experience we have is paying off.”

Enrique Luna was leading the team in scoring through late last

week with eight goals and five assists. Jonathan Hernandez had five goals and six assists.

“Those two have really good chemistry together,” said Dini, referring to Luna and Hernandez. “Jonathan is a bigger guy at 6-feet tall and is strong with the ball. Enrique gives us speed up top.”

Junior goalies Jacob Grygo and Jean Avila have also provided a shot in the arm for the Blazers.

“We split a lot of the time between the two,” said Dini. “They are both really good goalies and we are fortunate to have two goalies like them.”

Addison Trail also is looking forward to being back at full strength.

Senior starting left back Juan Martinez returned from a hand injury recently and the team is looking

forward to the return of all-sectional sweeper Uriel Martinez from injury shortly.

“It’s awesome that we are 8-1, but we’ve had a lot of injuries,” said Dini. “It’s nice that Juan is back and it will be a big boost getting Uriel back. A lot of different guys have stepped up. Getting players back will be big both physically and mentally. This is a fun team. They have great chemistry together and they get along great. They also hate to lose. It’s a real competitive group.”

Before playing in the Pepsi final, Addison Trail was scheduled to play Hinsdale South, Proviso East (today) and Glenbard West (Saturday).

“That’s four games in seven days,” said Dini. “It will be crazy, but a lot of guys will get playing time.”

The IC Catholic Prep football team spread the wealth during its recent 72-0 rout of Chicago Christian in Metro Suburban Conference crossover action in Elmhurst.

The Knights ran for 352 yards and seven different players scored touch-

downs in helping the team move to a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Standout Jordan Rowell ran only three times for 118 yards and scored two more touchdowns. Junior Lazerick Eatman ran 12 times for 86 yards and scored two touchdowns. Sophomore Jacob Lytton ran five times for 80 yards and scored a touchdown.

Matt Jordan led the defense with an interception return for a touchdown. He had two interceptions in the game. Sanders had a fumble recovery, while Matt Sutton caused two fumbles. James Lytton also caused a fumble and Rowell added an interception. Dylan Parker, Ricky Mysliwiec and Enright Jack each had a quarterback sack.

Lytton led the defense with eight tackles. Gibbons added six, while Chuck Hipskind and Kemon Reese each had five tackles. Chris Johnson had a tackle for loss.

come very much a part of the fabric of our lives. My own dear sweet hubby posts some magical stuff there. But if you want to make sure I get your invite or hear your news, text me.

I was in the grocery store a while back (a few years now) and I recall hearing two women have an enthusiastic long-lost reunion exchange that went something like: “Sharon! Oh my goodness, it’s been years! How are you? You look great!”

“Mindy! Wow! Hey! How are you? I’m good? How are you? You look good! It has been forever!”

“Yeah, married with kids now.”

“Me too! Husband, two kids.”

“Yeah, wow, time goes so fast. So good to see you, gotta run. Hey, let’s catch up on Facebook!”

They were all smiles and hugs and giggles and “oh wows” and “it’s been so long” and “so good to see you” and that lasted all of 90 seconds and then it was … we’ll catch up on Facebook.

Do you recall running into someone in the store and standing and chatting for half an hour? I do. We hadn’t seen each other in a while.

We caught up right then and there.

There was no Facebook. There was no technology to replace conversation in the flesh.

Interesting times.

It may sound like I’m an old crabby lady, and maybe sometimes I am.

I appreciate the new and I also like the old. My hubby and I recently ran into my sons’ first grade teacher. We stood in the parking lot and chatted for 30 minutes. Sure, I can look her up on Facebook, but a good oldfashioned conversation is good too.

When I was in grade school we learned the rhyme: Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold. Technology is a new friend. Face to face is an old friend. There is room for both. And emoticons can never replace the feel of a hug.

Indiana Wine Trail Fall Haul runs November 6 and 7 The Indiana Wine Trail in Southeast Indiana will host their annual Fall Haul Event on Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7. Only this time, instead of pairing wine and food, the wine is part of the food.

A key component of this campaign will be an online road trip planner through Roadtrippers.com where travelers can discover, plan, map and book a trip along Michigan’s Scenic Byway Routes.

The experience will be found at www.puremichiganscenicroute.com and features 10 of the state’s Pure Michigan Byways. Highlighted areas of the state include the Keweenaw Peninsula, West Michigan shoreline, Sunrise Coast and US-12 route. Attractions accessible along each route are also featured allowing visitors to create custom trip itineraries. Local destinations and attractions will also be able to add their point of interest in the Roadtrippers.com database.
