VFW to host veteran benefits event

On Saturday, Sept. 23, all veterans and their friends and families are invited to the Villa Park VFW from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the for the 7th Annual Veteran Benefits Event, sponsored by Welcome Home All Veterans (WHAV). Admission is FREE and everyone is invited to attend.

The event will serve to educate veterans and their families about the changes to veteran benefits that few are aware of. It will also celebrate our veterans by providing an opportunity for people to show their support to our military and the opportunity to say thank you for your service.

The event, which originated in Villa Park in 2010, provides on-site resources to learn about Medical Benefits, Retirement Benefits, VA Sign-up and more. Veterans in the region are encouraged to come out with their families to enjoy music, food and raffles.

Over the past years, due to the partnership of many organizations, businesses and private citizens we have been able to help hundreds of veterans and their family members increase their benefits; immediately, on the spot.

Villa Park Sept. 8 Ian T. Escallier, 20, of Villa Park, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, no registration speeding and no insurance near St. Charles and Michigan at around 12:54 a.m.

Sept. 7 • Criminal defacement was reported near Park and Myrtle at around 7:21 p.m. Police said that an unknown suspect defaced a stop sign at the intersection.

The multitudinous multi-tasker

A phone used to be a phone and nothing more – except for maybe a paperweight. Now our “phones” are multi-taskers of the unlimited kind. Well, unless you go over your allotted gigabytes or data plan, but you know what I mean.

That’s why I’m petitioning to change the name of cell phones.

They shouldn’t be called phones at all. I barely use mine as a phone.

Talking on the phone is so blasé. So last century.

Plus it takes time. Instead of going through the excruciatingly laborious process of carrying on a conversation, we can now type the conversation with our thumbs on a tiny onscreen keyboard. Why talk with you can type? Typing is so much faster.

Communicating via text message or email is only the tip of the usefulness iceberg. I have a compass at my beck and call. Compasses are valuable tools for people who get lost easily. This describes me to a tee. I may not have an internal compass, but my phone does. I can hardly remember how I survived,

Then there’s the built-in locater that can help you find yourself, or your phone should you lose either.

You can even track the location of your kids or spouse, not that anyone would find that useful.

Lets get serious. About Siri. She is everyone’s best friend. In fact, she’s better than a real live best friend because you can turn her off anytime you desire. Tired of Siri?

Sick of her advice? Turn her off.

And when you decide you need her to dial your phone or locate the nearest Starbucks, she’s as friendly and chipper as always. She never holds your turning her off against you. Everyone needs a sidekick

like Siri.

And, she (or he if you’ve got a male Siri) even has a sense of humor. If you want to see for yourself tell her, “I’ve got a little silhouetto of a man.” Just do it. I promise you genuine rhapsody. For an encore, say, “knock, knock.” I got a chuckle out of her response to that one.

Siri’s a real comedian, for someone who refuses to tell jokes.

Back to the multitudinous multi-tasking of the smartness we carry in our pockets. I used to use a digital camera, have my pictures printed on real paper and then put them in a photo album. I wore a watch to tell the time, but kept a separate stopwatch for races and breath-holding contests. I kept my calendar planner (book style) close at hand. When it was time to balance the checkbook I hauled out the calculator. Banking business involved a visit to the bank. Shopping involved a credit card or cash.

When I needed to check the weather, I watched the news or looked outside. If I wanted to make a grocery list or jot down an idea

for a column, I wrote it on paper, in a notebook. Monopoly and Scrabble were kept in cardboard boxes in the cupboard. When I played solitaire I used 52 cards. My flashlight was forever running out of batteries. Now it’s always charged and ready to go.

Music playlists (which we called records) were kept on cassette tapes, and later, CDs. We used to own a video camera that must have weighed at least 20 pounds. It cost as much (if not more) than an average state-of-the-art smartphone.

Our phones have become lifelines to, well, life. They connect us to the world, providing tools for communication, information, illumination, dictation, location, planning vacation and so much more.

They’ve become more than phones and deserve a name befitting their status. I propose iEverything, because that’s what they do.

I’ve even used mine as a paperweight in a pinch.

Currently there are more than 2 million Illinoisans who are eligible to vote, but aren’t registered.

To encourage more registration, State Senator Tom Cullerton’s (D-Villa Park) bipartisan measure, Senate Bill 1933, to allow Illinois residents seeking a new or renewed driver’s license or state ID would automatically be registered to vote unless they opt out, was signed into law today.

“Streamlining this process will save the state money, remove duplicate voter records and engage more people in the democratic process,” Cullerton said. “It’s our duty to make sure Illinois residents are given the opportunity to exercise their fundamental rights.”

The bipartisan law includes provisions suggested by opponents such as requiring an applicant to confirm they are eligible to vote, and giving people the option to opt-out of registering at the time they are getting their license renewed or updated.

In a 2011 interview of singer Helen Reddy (who will be 76 in October) she was asked, “How would you like to be remembered?”

District 88 schools welcome Canadian Brass ensemble On Sept. 15, the brass ensemble Canadian Brass performed at Addison Trail for about 550 music students Addison Trail as well as Willowbrook High School in Villa Park.

The members of the quintet are Chuck Daellenbach (tuba), Chris Coletti (trumpet), Caleb Hudson (trumpet), Achilles Liarmakopoulos (trombone) and Bernhard Scully (horn). Their concerts typically portray a full range from trademark baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them; from formal classical presentation to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects.

Students were able to hear and watch the group perform several numbers and also had an opportunity to ask questions.

According to the ensemble’s website, “the hallmark of any Canadian Brass performance is entertainment, spontaneity, virtuosity and, most of all, fun – but never at the expense of the music: Whatever the style, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication, skill and excellence.”

Boomers and Gen X-ers share similar financial fears, according to the study. About 66 percent of Baby Boomers admit they are concerned about outliving their retirement savings. Gen X-ers are even more fearful – 77 percent report the same concern.

These fears may stem in part from the fact that many Gen Xers are getting squeezed – with nearly a fifth of this “sandwich” generation supporting their parents and 71 percent supporting children.

To ensure your savings can last a lifetime, start by assessing your current retirement strategy, including benefits such as Social Security and any other income streams. Then look at your future financial needs.

You may also wish to investigate options such as a fixed index annuity, which can help protect your nest egg from market volatility and generate steady lifetime income.

While the survey results sug-

gest a growing participation in parents’ retirement planning, there is clearly room for improvement in communication on these subjects.

“All too often, money becomes a taboo topic or a source of embarrassment,” Hughes said. “Making time for these discussions can help encourage each generation to avoid making the same mistakes their parents did and plan better for the future.”

Stone 3rd graders meet the mayor, visit museum On Friday Sept. 15, Stone School 3rd graders spent the morning touring the Addison Historical Museum, the Coach House and Century House. After those tours, they went to Village Hall where enjoyed lunch and a visit with Mayor Veenstra.

The final portion of the field trip was a visit to the Addison Library where students learned about parts of the library that they may not have had the chance to visit before. They saw the library’s 3D printer in action, visited offices where library materials are processed before being made available to the public, and walked around the building’s green roof.

Thanks to the Village of Addison, the Addison Historical Society, and the Addison Public Library, 3rd graders from all of the District 4 schools are scheduled to have this same field trip opportunity to learn more about the community in which they live.

Those who attended the BWell Bensenville Family Fest in Redmond Park on Saturday, Sept. 16 were promised a healthy lunch and these volunteers set everything up to make sure it was ready for guests and visitors, especially for the walkers from the Walk-A-Thon, which concluded at Redmond Park.

Recently, Mr. Guerrero, Mrs. Mullins and Ms. Conner took their Lincoln School 2nd grade classes on a walking field trip to see examples of places in their community that they are learning about in social studies. The students, teachers, and chaperones walked through a shopping center), a church, a school, and a park, all places that they had read about in the classroom. Addison Trail boys soccer team ties for third place at Novy tournament Blazers football loses to Willowbrook

The Addison Trail boys soccer team recently tied for third place out of eight teams at its own Joe Novy tournament.

The Blazers defeated Sycamore 3-0, tied West Chicago 0-0, lost to Maine West 2-1 and tied Glenbard North 0-0.

Addison Trail also lost 3-0 to St. Charles North in the Pepsi Showdown. Through its first six games, Addison Trail was 1-2-3.

Melvin Mora, Eduardo Huerta and Jean Avila all were named to the Joe Novy all-tournament team.

“Melvin has been our best player this year and he only is a junior,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini.

“He has great size and has a rocket for a shot. Melvin was a key member of our team last season so he has valuable experience and is becoming more of a leader this season.”

Dini cited additional recent strong play from midfielder Luis Silva.

“Luis has been a surprise for us at midfield,” he said. “He tore his ACL last season as a sophomore, but has really played well this year as a junior on varsity.”

The Willowbrook football team means business.

The Warriors moved to 3-1 on the season with a 45-0 shutout of District 88 neighbor Addison Trail in a Week 4 matchup in Villa Park.

Willowbrook led 24-0 after the first quarter and 31-0 at halftime.

Willowbrook’s defense had five interceptions and registered four quarterback sacks. Sam Tumilty had two interceptions for 119 return yards. He returned one pick-off 90 yards for a score. CJ Harris, Jacob Entwistle and Deandre Holliday each had a pick.

Jack Jessen, who also scored two rushing touchdowns, Kevon Dobbins, Emmanuel Chavez and Nick Rushing each had a quarterback sack. Martique Barksdale recovered a fumble.

Willowbrook now is 2-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play and heads to Darien Friday for a key WSC Gold showdown with Hinsdale South.

Addison Trail dropped to 2-2 and 0-1 in conference play.

Willowbrook boys golf The Willowbrook boys golf team took seventh at the recent West Chicago Invitational held at St. Andrews in West Chicago (par-72, 6,818 yards).

The loss put Willowbrook at 6-9 overall and 1-1 in WSC Gold actin.

Hanna Konrath had four digs for Willowbrook, while Charlotte Dewyer had one assist and three digs.

“Our team defense has been pretty good this season,” said Dini, who noted his team had allowed only six goals in the first six games. “We have two juniors and two seniors starting in the back for us and they have really come together to form a tough defensive group. They do not take a lot of chances and they communicate well.”

Dini said the team is hard at work to up its offensive production. “Our offense needs to improve,” he said.

“We have had some bad luck with hitting the post or crossbar in several games. We still need to shoot more

on goal and we are not connecting those crucial passes in the offensive-third to create important scoring chances.”

The coach added the squad’s current strengths are with its team defense and its goalies. “We also have played decent in the middle.

Our midfield has improved game by game,” said Dini.

Fenton boys soccer team wins five games in a week Bison football team defeats Walther, moves to 2-2

What a week it was for the Fenton boys soccer team.

The Bison completed an extremely busy week by going 5-0 to improve their record to 11-3 overall.

Fenton was a 6-2 winner over Chicago Kennedy in non-conference play. The Bison then recorded a 6-1 win over Chicago Kelly in the Pepsi Showdown tournament. Fenton defeated Aurora Central Catholic 6-4 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play.

Fenton returned to the Pepsi event and won 3-1 against Chicago Taft and then defeated Crystal Lake Central 2-0 to finish third in its bracket of the Pepsi Showdown.

In the win against Crystal Lake Central, freshman Ivan Jaramillo had two goals. Against Taft, Branny Salas had two goals, while Angel Barriga tallied a goal.

Barriga had four goals, while Jaramillo had two goals in the win against Aurora Central Catholic.

Against Kelly, Barriga had two goals and Jaramillo had one goal. Junior Abraham Sanchez and junior Moises Noyola each had a goal.

Against Kennedy, Barriga had three goals, while senior Johnny Chavez had one goal, as did Sanchez and Noyola.

“Despite having all those games, we did well. It was a busy week,” said Fenton coach Victor Ruiz.

“It’s all about game management in those situations.

If we’re up, make the other team run and preserve energy and legs for the following games. We’ve been preaching ball movement and ball control. Our highpressure defense gives us the opportunity to create mistakes for the other team and capitalize on those mistakes.”

Ruiz has been pleased with the leadership of Barriga this season. “It’s the leadership of Angel,” Ruiz explained. “I told him at the beginning of the season that this season he would work less than the three previous years he’s been here and he will be scoring more goals because of the kids around him.

We move the ball well and have great distribution.”

“I’m happy with how we are playing,” said Ruiz.

“We know we still have a lot of work to do. We still are making mistakes. We’re getting goals scored on us because of mental mistakes that could be avoided.

We’re getting better.”

Barriga, through late last week, was the team leader in goals scored with 22. Jaramillo was next with 12.

Fenton has two non-conference games scheduled this week against Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South.

“Those are two big games for us,” said Ruiz. “We are looking forward to both of them. They will be a really good test for our guys.”

As the American Red Cross responds to wildfires and historic hurricanes, eligible donors are reminded that giving blood or platelets during National Preparedness Month in September is one way to help ensure the Red Cross is prepared to respond to patient emergencies across the country every day.

Hurricane Irma has forced the cancellation of dozens of Red Cross blood drives in the Southeast, resulting in more than 2,100 uncollected blood and platelet donations. Natural disasters like hurricanes can disrupt blood drives and prevent donors from giving, but hospital patients still depend on lifesaving transfusions. Volunteer blood and platelet donors are the only source for blood products needed by hospital patients.

Individuals in parts of the country unaffected by Hurricane Irma are encouraged to give blood or platelets to help ensure a sufficient blood supply.

All blood types are currently needed.

Appointments can be made by using the Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS. To help reduce wait times, donors are encouraged to make appointments and use RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questions online, on the day of their donation, from a computer or mobile device at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass.

Woman charged with putting nail polish remover in stepdaughter’s bottle sentenced to 10 years

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced recently a Carol Stream woman accused of putting nail polish remover in her seventeen-month-old stepdaughter’s baby bottle has been sentenced to ten years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Andrea Vazquez-Hernandez, 37 of 661 Hearth Lane, appeared in Court this morning in front of Judge Brian Telander who handed down the sentence. On July 11, 2017, following a bench trial, Judge Telander found Vazquez-Hernandez guilty of two counts of Aggravated Battery, a Class 3 Felony, and one count of Attempt Aggravated Battery Causing Great Bodily Harm to a Child Under 13, a Class 1 Felony. She has been held in custody since May 31, 2016 on a bond of $250,000 with 10 percent to apply.

During the evening of May 29, 2016, officers with the Carol Stream Police Department responded to a call at VazquezHernandez’s home regarding a child who may have ingested nail polish remover. Upon their arrival at the home, officers spoke to the victim’s father, who had placed the call. It is alleged that earlier that evening, the child’s father attempted to give his daughter a bottle of milk and that the child immediately spit out the contents of the bottle.

The victim’s father immediately brought the girl to the hospital. All tests performed on the child at the hospital came back normal and she was released. An investigation into the matter revealed that at some point in time earlier that day, the victim’s stepmother allegedly added approximately one inch of nail polish remover to the baby bottle.

“The very idea that anyone would purposely give a potentially deadly substance to an infant is shocking,” Berlin said. “Thankfully, the infant did not suffer any serious injury as a result of Ms. VazquezHernandez’s attempts to cause her harm. I would like to thank the Carol Stream Police Department for work on this very disturbing case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Lee Roupas and Nicole Wilkes English for their work in holding Ms. Vazquez-Hernandez responsible for her deplorable actions.”

Vazquez-Hernandez will be required to serve 50% of her sentence before being eligible for parole.

Adopt a baby Blanding’s turtle

Join Forest Preserve District’s efforts to protect state-endangered species

Help pay for the care of a state-endangered Blanding’s turtle hatchling by adopting one under a new program started by the Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

The fundraising effort helps the District’s 22-year-old Project Head Start, which works to provide a safe place for Blanding’s turtles to hatch and grow in an effort to boost the species’ population. With only 269 hatchlings expected this season, adoption opportunities are limited, so donations should be made soon. So far, 26 hatchlings have been adopted.

A minimum donation of $100 is needed to adopt a turtle hatchling, which includes naming rights for the turtle, a Blanding’s turtle information card, adoption certificate with unique turtle number, a subscription to the District quarterly Conservationist; a plush turtle, and program updates twice a year. Those interested in adopting a Blanding’s turtle hatchling can do so online or at fundraising@dupageforest.org or 630-933-7097.

Turtles on borderline of extinction Since 1996, the District has reared and released more than 3,000 young turtles.

In recent years, at least 90 percent of the fertile eggs recovered resulted in hatchlings. In 2014, 204 fertile eggs were collected and hatched, creating an unprecedented 100 percent hatch rate.

In more recent years, staff was only finding adult Blanding’s turtles in the preserves and no juveniles or young adults, indicating that Blanding’s turtles were dying off

faster than they could repopulate.

“The Blanding’s turtle is definitely on the brink of extinction,” said District ecologist Dan Thompson. “It’s known as the poster child of wetland species in dire straits.”

One of the biggest threats to Blanding’s turtles is predators eating their eggs in the nest. During their 60-day incubation period, 90 percent of turtle nests are destroyed by predators each year. The most voracious predators are raccoons but others include the skunk, opossum and mink.

To improve their odds, every spring Thompson and his staff don hip waders and take to the wetlands and marshes in DuPage forest preserves to collect pregnant females before they lay their eggs. They bring the turtles to the District’s Urban Stream Research Center in Warrenville, equipped with nurseries to receive and incubate the eggs.

When the female is done laying eggs and ready to be released back into her natural habitat, she is fitted with a radio transmitter on her upper shell, or “carapace,” to make it easier to locate her next year.

After the eggs hatch, they are numbered and given a medical checkup. Then they are kept and reared for about a year before being released back into the preserves after they are fitted with a microchip to help identify them in the future.

“To recover a species from the brink of extinction is a very difficult and challenging task,” Thompson said. “A collaborative effort such as this will have a much greater chance of success than one agency on its own.”

On the banks of the Mississippi River, the 148-acre Illinois state park, includes a 13-acre lake with a mile-long shoreline. In addition to fishing, boating, camping and hiking, people return to these serene surroundings for events and history.

Lake Horton, a 13-acre manmade fishing lake, is stocked for anglers wanting to catch largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill. Although there are no boat docks or boat rentals, a primitive boat launch is available. Only electric trolling motors are allowed.

Nauvoo State Park offers 150 camping spaces, equally divided between Class A and Class B areas. A youth group area is centrally located in the park. Don’t forget to ask for permission--all campers must obtain a permit for overnight camping from the park office, and groups of 25 or more must get advance permission before entering the park.

At 1.5 miles, the park’s main trail, Locust Lane, shows off some of the park’s best features. As the trail winds around the lake and through timbered areas, hikers can see and hear a variety of birds .Visitors also will enjoy the 3/8-mile accessible loop trail from the campground. A short trail connects the main picnic and playground area to the dam, and a short, one-way trail lead’s hikers to Gilligan’s Island on Lake Horton.

Fall & Seek with Pure Michigan As Michigan ushers in the vibrant colors of the fall, Pure Michigan has launched a new adventure to inspire travelers to explore the state this season. Fans are invited to join the scenic routes of three travelers as they journey across Michigan over the next six weeks, with checkpoints along the way determined by votes on the Pure Michigan Facebook and Instagram pages.

Shalee Blackmer, Dan Price and Gene Yoon will each spend two weeks exploring a different route in Michigan – Blackmer in the Upper Peninsula, Price traversing the Northern Lower Peninsula and Yoon navigating his way through Southern Michigan. Each stop along the way will be determined by the fans

of Pure Michigan. Voting started Sept. 12 with Blackmer kicking off her two-week UP adventure in Copper Harbor. The first round of voting will decide whether she travels on to Marquette or The Porcupine Mountains. Price will begin his journey on Sept. 25 in Manistee and Yoon hits the road Oct. 8 starting in Grand Rapids.

“Fall in Michigan offers countless opportunities to chase the color and discover the hidden gems found along backroads and byways,” said Dave Lorenz, Vice President of Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “As Shalee, Dan and Gene chase the bounty of fall across the state, we are excited to engage with

our fans and help inspire their next Pure Michigan Scenic Route.”

Polls for each stop will be live for 36 hours on Facebook and Instagram with fans casting their vote by commenting about which location they want the travelers to visit next.

During the voting period, Blackmer, Price and Yoon will be exploring each destination and sharing their experiences on social media using the hashtags #PureMichiganScenicRoute and #FallandSeek.
