Bensenville Park District to host Sports Dayz on Aug. 6 Residents can enjoy sports at three different parks

It’s training camp season, and the Bensenville Park District invites residents of all ages to “meet us at the park” to take part in one of the many Sports Dayz activities taking place at Poplar Park, Sunrise Park and Woodcrest Park between 9:30 a.m. and 12 noon Saturday, Aug. 6.

“Here’s your chance to try a new sport or to show off your skills with

your friends at one of our neighborhood parks,” said Bensenville Park District superintendent of recreation Mike Hayes. “This free event is geared toward kids of all ages and genders, so we look forward to seeing you at the park.”

The fun begins at Poplar Park at 9:30 a.m. when participants will be able to take part in a three-point

From 10 to 11 a.m., Sunrise Park will host a floor hockey shooting skills competition as well as a twoball, two-player basketball team competition where each team will have one minute to score as many baskets as they can from designat-

Come to Woodcrest Park from 11 a.m. to noon to punt, pass and kick the football around the field. Winners are determined by the distance and accuracy of their punts, passes, and kicks.

Play initiative aimed at meeting people where they live by providing programming in neighborhood parks.

More than 50 events are taking place in Bensenville parks as part of the initiative this summer.

Juveniles charged with setting fire at former Pheasant Run Resort Berlin decries fire that drew 107 firefighters from 26 departments

imately 4:41 p.m., the St. Charles Police Department and the St. Charles Fire Department responded to the former Pheasant Run resort located at 4051 E. Main St., for multiple reports of a structure fire.

Upon their arrival, authorities found large sections of the resort engulfed in flames. More than 100 firefighters from more than 25 fire departments were called to ultimately extinguish the blaze.

Contest held among residents to name new vacuums

With a nationwide staff shortage causing challenges to virtually every industry, Park Place of Elmhurst has found an innovative solution at their senior living community. To help staff efficiency, they have implemented the Whiz Robot.

The Whiz Robot works as an autonomous vacuuming robot—not to replace staff, but to augment the team and automate repetitive tasks, allowing staff to focus on other areas of need, such as personalized care.

Whiz Robots are programmed with enhanced safety measures to minimize risk. For example, if a person were to meet the robot, it is programmed to stop and move out of the way.

Park Place community members are delighted with the Whiz Robots and held a contest among the residents to name these two new “assistants.” Runners-up were Sparky & Tidy; Hazel & Alice; and, Jeeves & Jarvis. The winning names were Zig & Zag, submitted by resident Gail Balluff, who won 49 percent of the vote.

Park Place has been working closely with ProviNET Solutions, the technology division of their organization, to adopt new tools to enhance resident experience. Whiz Robots are just one example of those technological innovations. Administration is researching the possibility of using robots in the dining areas to assist staff with meal delivery as well.

Following the investigation, it is alleged that the four juveniles illegally entered the property at the former resort. It is alleged that once inside, two of the juveniles were involved in setting papers on fire at two separate locations. It is further alleged that the two juveniles left the area where they had set the papers on fire without extinguishing the fire. Charges were filed against the four juveniles on Monday, July 25.

The following day, the two juveniles facing the more serious charges turned themselves into authorities to await their detention hearing. The remaining two juveniles were notified of the charges against them and appeared in court as well.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and St. Charles Chief of Police James Keegan announced that two male juveniles have been charged with starting a three-alarm fire at the former Pheasant Run resort on North Avenue.

Two additional male juveniles have each been charged with trespassing at the resort as well. Each of the juveniles appeared at a detention hearing with their parents where Judge Anthony Coco ordered that the two charged with starting the fire—one from Carol Stream and another from Wheaton—be detained, while the other two, one from Carol Stream and another from Winfield, be released to the custody of their parents on home detention.

The detained juveniles have each been charged with one count of arson (Class 2 felony), one count of burglary (Class 2 felony), one count of criminal damage to property (Class 4 felony) and three counts of criminal trespass to a building (Class B misdemeanor). The two boys who were released to their parents’ custody have each been charged with two counts of criminal trespass to a building. The boys’ ages range from 14 to 17 years old.

Free Bensenville Park District Fitness Dayz group fitness classes have been rescheduled due to weather for three separate Saturday mornings—Aug. 6, 13 and 20. The event is part of the district’s Park ‘n Play initiative, which brings activities and events to neighborhood parks.

“Unfortunately, the wet weather and thunderstorm threats in the area forced the postponement of the event,” explained fitness supervisor Silvia Acevedo. “With the new format, we’ve separated the activities out so participants can try all three classes for free, and we’ve also identified alternate locations to conduct the activities in the event of bad weather.”

Warrenville man charged with public indecency-lewd exposure DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin has announced that John Coakley, 59, of Warrenville, has been charged with one count of misdemeanor public indecen- John Coakley cy-lewd exposure.

On July 27, a $2,000 personal recognizance arrest warrant was issued for Coakley. He turned himself in to authorities July 28 and was released following processing. Coakley is the city administrator for the city of Warrenville.

According to the complaint, on July 24 at approximately 9:15 p.m., while at Lifetime Fitness in Warrenville, Coakley “knowingly performed an act of lewd exposure” in the men’s locker room. An investigation into the matter conducted by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office led to the charges.

“The allegations in this case are disturbing and if proven true, the defendant will be held accountable for his actions” Berlin said. “I thank the Warrenville Police Department for bringing this matter to our attention.”

Coakley’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 29 in front of Judge Monique O’Toole.

Forest preserve district to host fundraiser

Help the DuPage Forest Preserve District provide healthy habitats for native plants and animals and inspiring places for visitors by participating in “A Night for Nature” on Thursday, Sept. 15, from 5-9 p.m. at St. James Farm in Warrenville.

Anniversary thoughts, Part 2: Don’t hold back “Tell them you love them over and over again. Tell them too much, and never too little, for the time we have is short, but the love we have is endless.” – Dane Thomas This week would have (should have) been my 35th wedding anniversary.

I guess it is my 35th wedding anniversary. I’m still married, albeit without a husband. A widow (deep heavy sigh). He died shortly after our 33rd anniversary. But still, I remember, and I celebrate. No, I just remember.

We’d planned to do something “big” on this anniversary. We never felt like we had the chance before.

Fifteen, twenty, even twenty-five— we let them all pass us by.

We were always too young, or too poor, or too busy raising kids to spend the time or money for anything for just the two of us. It seemed too extravagant.

We took lots of family vacations, but they were planned around our four kids.

We always spent time together, but it typically involved practices, games or performances (of the childhood variety). We spent many weekends away from home in hotels—for tournaments and supervising kids in the pool.

They were good years—building a family, raising children. We were happy to put special times for just the two of us on hold because we had all of our future for us as a couple. We married young. We were young. There’d be plenty of time.

Or so we thought.

We thought we’d do something big this year. He’d always promised to take me to Europe. But it could have been so many things: a long weekend in Las Vegas, a trip to a secluded cabin in the mountains, the beach. Anything—something.

It didn’t matter what. It would be a rare splurge on just the two of us.

Instead, now, it’s just me. And I have some advice.

Don’t wait. Don’t wait. Don’t wait.

Please. Don’t. Wait.

There are always logical reasons to wait. To put off the things you really want to do with your spouse because don’t have enough money or time or whatever you think

you need to do all the things you want to do. Please take note of my circumstance.

You never know when your own later may no longer exist. Take the trip. Go on the vacation. Fish for salmon in Alaska. Cruise the Mediterranean. Hula in Hawaii.

Surf in South Africa. Volunteer in to build a school or a church. Go on safari. Visit a nude beach. Buy that hobby farm. Plan an extravagant night out on the town. Buy her the diamond. Get him those golf clubs.

Do it now.

My husband and I passed by anniversary number 30 and thought we had to wait until number 35 to celebrate something grand because 35 was the next big number.

Take it from me: numbers don’t matter. Life matters. Now matters.

Celebrate now. Celebrate this year, next year and the year after.

Heck, celebrate more often than that. Celebrate always. Every day.

Unabashedly.

Because, at then end of it all, not too many of us regret all the good and joyous things we did in life. We don’t regret the happy memories or songs we sang together.

What we might regret, and often regret, are the spectacular things we didn’t do. Even the mundane things we didn’t get a chance to do. Those that we thought we’d get to—some day—but didn’t because time ran out My best advice? You never know when time will run out. So do it now. Experience to the fullest.

Enjoy. Love. Create a memory worth keeping. Let your husband (or wife) take you to Europe.

Make it spectacular.

Hearing examines practices, profits of gun industry

Raja Krishnamoorthi Last week, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing examining the practices and profits of the gun industry in the wake of the recent mass shootings, the increase in general gun violence across the country, and the stunning revelation that gun manufacturers have made more $1 billion in profits from assault weapons in the past decade alone.

During the hearing, I asked Marty Daniel, CEO of Daniel Defense, about a recent tweet the company sent out featuring an image of a sniper rifle on a rooftop aimed at a person sitting in a parked car.

Despite claims from gun companies that they market their weapons for hunting and self-defense purposes, it is clear that neither is happening in the company’s promotional tweet—it is a shooter on a roof preparing to open fire on an unsuspecting person.

The disturbing nature of this ad is magnified when considering that it comes just weeks after the Highland Park tragedy in which the gunman unleashed a hail of bullets from a rooftop position, murdering seven people and paralyzing a child from the waist down.

Despite its demonization by some extremists, the ATF plays a critical role in saving lives and combatting gun violence. ATF’s tracing center also led to the swift identification and apprehension of the Highland Park shooter before he could claim even more innocent lives.

Additional cases of monkeypox identified in DuPage County Risk to public remains low

The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) has identified four additional cases of monkeypox in recent days, bringing the total number of cases in DuPage County to five.

The DCHD is working closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the persons with monkeypox, and their healthcare providers for the appropriate testing, assessment, and coordination of antiviral treatment.

The DCHD is also working to identify contacts to inform them about how to monitor their health and seek care if symptoms appear.

If indicated, they are offered timely vaccination based on exposure

risk. Persons with monkeypox are recommended to self-isolate. At his time, there is no indication there is risk of extensive local spread of the virus.

Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox.

The symptoms of monkeypox are similar to but milder than the symptoms of smallpox. Most people who contract monkeypox will develop a rash, and some will develop flu-like symptoms beforehand. The flu-like symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches and backache, sore throat, cough, swollen lymph nodes, chills, or exhaustion.

Sometimes, people get a rash first, followed by other symptoms.

Others only experience a rash.

Symptoms usually start within three weeks of exposure to the virus.

Most infections last 2 to 4 weeks.

Anyone with a new or unexplained rash or a rash that looks like

monkeypox should talk with their healthcare provider, even if they don’t think they had contact with someone who has monkeypox.

Avoid close contact (including intimate physical contact) with others until a healthcare provider examines you. Monkeypox does not spread easily between people; however, anyone in close contact with a person with monkeypox can get it and should take steps to protect themselves.

To prevent monkeypox infection: • Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like monkeypox.

• Do not touch the rash or scabs of a person with monkeypox. o Do not kiss, hug, cuddle or have sex with someone with monkeypox.

• Do not share eating utensils or cups with a person with monkeypox.

• Do not handle or touch the bedding, towels, or clothing of a person with monkeypox.

Currently, there is no specific treatment for the monkeypox virus infection; however, smallpox antiviral drugs and vaccines may be used to help prevent and treat monkeypox virus infections.

The DuPage County Health Department has received limited doses of the JYNNEOS monkeypox vaccine and has begun distribution and administration. Healthcare providers are able to request the vaccine through the DCHD. The CDC recommends vaccination for people who have been in close contact with people who have monkeypox. While this current outbreak is largely affecting gay, bisexual, or other men who have sex with men, it is important to know anyone can get monkeypox.

Currently, people who may be eligible for vaccination include: • People who have been identified as a contact of someone with monkeypox.

• People who are aware that one of their sexual partners in the past

two weeks was diagnosed with monkeypox.

• People who had multiple sexual partners in the past two weeks in an area with known monkeypox.

(Continued from page 7) Panel discussion on price gouging by major corporations contributing to high food costs I recently traveled to the NCH Community Resource Center in Palatine to hold a panel discussion with local community leaders at the Greater Chicago Food Depository on how food price increases are affecting the health and well-being of working families in the district and across Illinois.

The demand at food banks throughout the state is increasing as donation levels have simultaneously declined due to the same rising food costs impacting people’s ability to donate money and food items of their own.

While supply chain issues and general inflation remain significant factors in the dramatic increase in food prices and the cost of other goods in recent months, I am concerned that some major companies are also taking advantage of the situation by using predatory business practices to drive up the costs of goods for consumers to boost their own profits.

As chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, I sent a letter to the four largest meat processing companies, requesting information related to the increasing costs of meat. The profit margins for these four companies have increased by 300 percent since the onset of the pandemic, with net incomes skyrocketing by 500 percent, because the price increases, they’ve foisted upon consumers greatly exceed their own cost increases.

To address another driver of inflation and shortages, I’ve also launched an investigation into price gouging by the shipping industry.

For example, CMA CGM, one of the largest shipping companies in the world, recorded $11 billion in profit in the first nine months of 2021, more than the company made during the prior decade combined, as their own cost increases were dwarfed by the price hikes they pushed on their customers, driving up the prices of shipping anything, and thus what customers pay at the store.

While my investigations continue, there is no question that these types of predatory business practices are harming consumers and further fueling inflation. They must be stopped, and these companies must be held accountable.

Deadline extended for license, ID, permit registration Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits are being extended until Dec. 1. The previous extension was set to end on July 31.

As a result, expired driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits will remain valid until Dec. 1, so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities. This ex-

tension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

White’s office expanded online renewals for expired driver’s licenses and ID cards and continues to mail letters to eligible customers.

The letter provides driver’s license and ID card holders with a unique PIN needed to renew online instead of visiting a facility and waiting in

line. Customers may call 217-7851424 to confirm their eligibility for online renewal or to obtain their PIN. They may also visit https:// apps.ilsos.gov/renewaldlid/eligible.jsp to look up their eligibility status.

Customers who must visit a facility include first-time driver’s license or ID card applicants, firsttime REAL ID applicants and driv-

ers ages 75 and older who are required by state law to visit a facility when renewing their license.

White continues to encourage people to conduct other business online at ilsos.gov. In addition to driver’s license and ID card renewals for those who qualify, online services include obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, ordering a driver record and purchas-

ing license plate stickers.

White noted his office is also extending the expiration dates of Restricted Driving Permits (RDPs) to Dec. 1 for those that expired on or after Dec. 1, 2021 through Dec. 1, 2022.

As a reminder, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

Thompson Center sale finalized with Google to be building’s lone occupant CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

After years of failed efforts that spanned multiple administrations, the state has finalized the sale of the controversial James R. Thompson Center in Chicago to a company that will make it the new Chicago home of tech giant Google.

Gov. JB Pritzker made the announcement during a news conference at the building, along with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and officials from the development company and Google. Pritzker said the sale will save the state millions on deferred maintenance costs.

“When the project is done, the first Googlers will be walking into this atrium for an entirely redeveloped and truly magnificent experience, one that comes as Google continues to dramatically expand its footprint in Illinois,” Pritzker said.

Designed by architect Helmut Jahn, the 17-story structure first opened in 1985, featuring a large atrium, food court and 1.2 million square feet of

office space that currently houses offices of 50 state agencies.

But its unique, postmodern design, which some have compared to a spaceship, has long been the subject of both praise and criticism, and its high cost of maintenance and operations, estimated at $17 million a year, has been a drain on state resources.

In 2003, then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat, proposed selling the building, but that deal never went through and with state funding cuts, it began to fall into disrepair.

Former Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, also proposed selling it in 2015 and again in 2017, but lawmakers at that time could not agree on a plan amid the ongoing two-year budget impasse, which led to further deferred maintenance on the building.

A 2016 cost study estimated it would take $300 million to bring the building into good repair, and the governor’s office said that cost is projected to increase to over $525 million if maintenance needs are not addressed by 2026.

In 2019, Pritzker signed legislation that had originally passed the General Assembly two years earlier authorizing a new process of trying to sell the building through a competitive bidding process. And in January 2021 officials announced plans to begin moving employees out of the Thompson Center into another building the state had purchased for $73.5 million at 555 W. Monroe.

Then in December 2021, officials announced tentative plans to sell the building for $70 million to JRTC Holdings LLC, a firm managed by real estate developer Michael W. Reschke and the Capri Investment Group. Under that deal, the state would have purchased back 425,000 square feet of newly renovated office space and it would have contributed $148 million for its share of the renovations.

Under the new agreement announced July 27, however, the state will sell the entire building for $105 million and use $75 million of that to buy another building nearby in the

central Loop area, at 115 S. LaSalle, currently the headquarters of BMO Harris Bank which plans to relocate.

JRTC Holdings will perform the renovations on the LaSalle building to accommodate the state’s operations after BMO Harris Bank vacates the building. The improvements there are expected to take 18 months with partial occupancy expected within eight months from the closing, the governor’s office said in a news release “This trade was a huge win-win for everyone,” Reschke said. “Google was able to secure 100 percent of this iconic building for future headquarters and the state will now own 50 percent more space on LaSalle Street at 50 percent less cost.”

Google, which is headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., has had a presence in Chicago since 2000. It currently employs about 2,000 employees in the city’s Fulton Market area.

Karen Sauder, Google’s president of global clients and agency solutions, said the company eventually

plans to buy the building itself in order to bring its employees into the downtown area.

“The way we see it, the Thompson Center is more than just a building,” she said. “Establishing a presence here in the loop allows us to get in on the ground floor of revitalizing and breathing new life into the very heart of the city. Just as we’re proud of the role we played in turning Fulton Market into one of the most vibrant and energetic neighborhoods in the city, we have the opportunity to do it all over again here.”

The moves by the state are part of a larger effort to optimize its real estate holdings in downtown Chicago.

Prior to those efforts, the state owned three buildings in the area, including the Thompson Center, and leased office space in seven other buildings. Together, according to the Department of Central Management Services, those properties exceeded 2.3 million square feet.

Illinois Dems stump for 2024 Chicago convention as party chair vote looms

Illinois Democrats are vying to make Chicago the host city for the Democratic National Convention in 2024 while considering who will lead their party for the next four years.

Meanwhile, the state’s Republican Party is hearing calls for a censure of one of its sitting congressmen.

Officials for the Democratic National Committee were in Chicago on July 26 as state leaders, including Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, called a news conference to tout the city as a potential host for the Democrats’ 2024 nominating convention.

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said at a July 26 news conference in Chicago the committee was looking for a city that represents diversity, inclusion and opportunity.

He said it will be the first big showcase for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who didn’t have a convention in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other finalist cities include New York City, Atlanta and Houston.

Pritzker, whose name has frequent-

ly been mentioned in the conversation as a potential replacement for Biden if he doesn’t run in 2024, said he looks at the convention as an opportunity “to show off” the city, which “represents what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris represent.”

“This is what it looks like when Americans vote for leaders who support hardworking families,” Pritzker said, citing “policies of a fair minimum wage, expanding voting rights, protecting civil rights and human rights, and standing up for the right to choose.”

Pritzker said the convention would bring “thousands of good-paying, labor-friendly jobs” and 50,000 visitors to the state. Lightfoot estimated it could generate $150 million to $200 million in spending in the local economy.

She also cited the city’s familiarity with large-scale events, along with its infrastructure, location and the state’s “unified leadership” as reasons Chicago should host the convention.

But the news conference came just four days before a contentious vote in which Democrats will choose the leader of the state party for the next

four years. The post is currently held

by Congresswoman Robin Kelly, of Matteson. She won that title in March 2021 over Pritzker’s preferred candidate, Chicago Ald. Michelle Harris.

Kelly was elected to replace former state House Speaker Michael Madigan, who stepped down last year after failing to gain another term as House speaker. He was the state’s party leader from April 1998 until February 2021.

The party’s state central committee, made up of 17 men and 17 women from the state’s congressional districts, was scheduled to vote July 30 in Springfield on whether Kelly would remain in charge of the party for another four-year term. Each committeeperson’s vote is weighted based on the number of Democratic ballots cast in the congressional district.

Because Kelly is a sitting congresswoman, she is unable to raise money for candidates in state races, although she has no restrictions on fundraising for federal races. While the party created a fundraising committee for state races, the fundraising issue remains a key point of contention.

The latest campaign filings from

the Democratic Party of Illinois’ state fund show it raised $1.72 million in the quarter ending June 30, $1.5 million of which was transferred from Pritzker’s campaign fund. The party’s state fund expended $10,424.47 for the quarter that ended June 30, excluding Pritzker-funded mailers.

In the previous quarter, the DPI state fund spent $11,240.06. Its balance as of June 30 was $2.8 million.

But the party also maintains a federal fund registered through the Federal Election Commission, and DPI spokesperson Jake Lewis said the party has raised over $2 million since Kelly took over as party chair between the two funds, not including Pritzker’s transfers.

“Under Robin Kelly’s leadership, the Democratic Party of Illinois has been overhauled from top to bottom, with new staff and vendors, upgraded data and technology services, party organizers, an active communications shop, and more,” he said in an email.

“Chair Kelly’s vision for the party is one that serves all Democrats across our state, beyond just one candidate or one caucus, and we will continue to move our party forward.”

“We encourage Democrats to focus on the issues that matter to the people of this state, like defending our fundamental rights and defeating Republicans in the November,” Lewis added.

Pritzker, meanwhile, is supporting state Rep. Lisa Hernandez, D-Cicero, an assistant majority leader in the state House who carried the recent congressional and state redistricting bills through the General Assembly.

House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch is supporting Hernandez as well.

“This means having a chair that can fundraise for all Democratic candidates,” Welch said in a statement.

Welch said Hernandez’s “vision” would be to create a new role for Kelly as “federal chair.”

“They can work in partnership to lead the party forward,” he said in the statement. “This is how we have Democrats be more supported as we face two Supreme Court races, dozens of legislative campaigns, and other races up and down the ballot.”

Welch said it is “critical” that the leader of the state party can raise and spend funds that support all Democratic candidates across the state.

“Right now, DPI does not and cannot do that. If a leadership change occurs, it will,” he said.

The powerful AFL-CIO federation of labor unions issued a statement shortly after Welch’s supporting Hernandez as well.

Kelly told NBC News she was “disappointed” in the lack of support from Pritzker, but she appeared alongside the governor and other members of Congress at the morning event July 26, and the governor downplayed intraparty tensions.

“Well, let’s be clear: We’re all standing here in unison standing up for a Democratic Convention for Chicago and for the state of Illinois,” Pritzker said.

“And I think as the Chair (Kelly) said so eloquently, after Saturday, we’re going to have a chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois, whoever that is, is going to serve a four-year term,” he added, noting Democrats would rally around the chair for the next four years.

U.S. Sen Dick Durbin remains Kelly’s most prominent backer.

Republicans, meanwhile, were dealing with intraparty tensions of their own as state lawmakers in the conservative Freedom Caucus called on the party to censure U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, for his role as an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump on the U.S. House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

State Reps. Chris Miller, Brad Halbrook, Dan Caulkins, Adam Niemerg, and Blaine Wilhour—some of GOP governor candidate Darren Bailey’s closest allies in the Illinois General Assembly—called for the state party to censure Kinzinger and called the Jan. 6 hearings “a sham without any due process.”

The state party issued a statement saying it was “focused on uniting the party to defeat Gov. Pritzker in November and make Illinois a safe and affordable place for people to live.”

Produce donations can help area food pantries

Food pantries provide much needed relief for food insecure individuals and families. But pantries often rely on donations of canned and packaged foods with limited nutritional value.

Growing Together Illinois, a program from Illinois Extension, aims to provide fresh produce to food pantry clientele across the state.

A University of Illinois research team evaluated the program and found it to be successful in improving availability and distribution of fresh, nutritious foods.

Growing Together Illinois began in 2017 as part of a multi-state effort. It is implemented in collaboration between Extension’s Master Gardener program and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed).

“The program donates fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs to the pantries.

The overall goal is improved food access, but we also provide nutrition education and other support,” says Trinity Allison, SNAP-Ed senior program lead and co-author on the study.

Produce is grown in community gardens run by volunteers with assistance from Master Gardeners, who bring knowledge and expertise on planning, planting, maintaining and harvesting.

SNAP-Ed staff assists pantries with handling and promoting the produce, and provides education on usage, recipes, and suggestions for bundling with other meal items.

Melissa Pflugh Prescott, assistant professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) at U of I, led the multi-method research project to evaluate the program.

Prescott and her colleagues used the Nutrition Environment Food Pantry Assessment Tool (NEFPAT) to track changes before and after the intervention at 17 participating pantries. NEFPAT evaluates how healthful the consumer nutrition environment is at each pantry. The tool measures a range of dimensions such as availability and variety of healthy food choices, promotion, and plan-

ning resources.

The researchers also interviewed staff at five pantries to gain deeper insights into the program’s effects, and they conducted structured observations of pantry style and storage facilities at those locations.

Prescott says NEFPAT results showed significant improvement from Growing Together Illinois in terms of providing various types of produce and promoting healthy food items to clientele, and overall NEFPAT scores improved.

“From the interviews, we learned some of the things the Growing Together team was doing to overcome common barriers pantries experience with donations. For example, they often lack storage space and may only be open a few hours each week,” she states.

“The Master Gardeners worked in collaboration with SNAP-Ed and pantry staff to time the deliveries so it made sense with the pantry operation. That was one of the biggest facilitators to making this program

work. And everything arrived at the pantries cleaned, packaged and ready to go, making it as easy as possible for the pantry staff to get it out to people.”

Community gardens received program funding for the first years of operation but continue to supply donations for pantries.

“The initial small investment has turned into thousands of pounds of produce every year. It has been really exciting to see those communities increase capacity to keep the garden and the donation system going long term,” Allison says.

Prescott adds, “The national SNAP-Ed program is advocating policy, systems, and environmental change strategies to help communities make healthier eating choices.

This is a great example of a systems change, where different aspects of Extension come together in collaboration with community partners to make fresh, healthy food more accessible for vulnerable populations.”

Search by zip code to find local food pantries and free meal sites, as well as grocery stores and farmers markets that accept SNAP and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) coupons.

Forest preserve district fall tree and shrub sale now under way

Gardeners must order trees and shrubs in advance; they will not be able to shop at St. James Farm. Orders will be filled on a firstcome, first-served basis while supplies last and are subject to nursery availability.

Fall is the best time to plant native trees and shrubs. It gives them an extra growing season before the stress of summer, and there’s no need to worry about young natives trees surviving winter because they go dormant — the plant equivalent of hibernation.

Native trees and shrubs are good garden additions because they are better equipped to handle Illinois weather conditions and don’t require fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides or watering once established.

They provide greater soil stability and food and habitat for native wildlife, including pollinators. Native oaks are especially important because they are a keystone species, meaning many other plants and animals rely on them for food and shelter.

As assistant principal for student services, Tiritilli will work closely with the school’s counselors, deans and social worker to ensure that Montini is able to continue to meet the individual needs of all students. Tiritilli and his wife, Alexandria, are the parents of 2-year-old Gia, and 9-month-old Vince. His favorite pastime is spending time with his family. He also enjoys playing music and staying active.

Social media and teens: helpful or harmful?

First it was a challenge to remove items from the school bathroom.

Then a TikTok challenge urged students to slap a teacher. Next, students were encouraged to bring a weapon to school, prompting some schools across the country to shut down for a day and forcing others to increase security measures.

While social media sites like TikTok, Snapchat or Facebook helped fill the need for social connection during the pandemic, there has been a negative side.

As more teenagers have turned to social media, they’ve became more emboldened in their comments or actions.

The TikTok challenges are a good example. In one, students were challenged to remove items from their school bathrooms. In the days that followed, schools reported an increase in vandalism at their schools, particularly in the bathrooms. Some schools had to limit access to school

restrooms in an attempt to avoid vandalism.

School administrators found themselves dealing with an increase in fights among students as well as the videos of those fights that inevitably appeared on social media feeds moments after the fight.

Life as a teenager is difficult enough under normal circumstances.

Add the challenges since the pandemic began and it’s easy to understand there is more anxiety among students. Growing research suggests the prolonged use of social media can increase feelings of anxiety and inadequacy, especially in young people.

To find balance, first look at the core reason teens are using social media. Some may crave the approval of their peers. Others may be seeking fame and hope to be the next social media sensation. Some may just be looking to connect with friends.

Parents can help teens examine the

motivators behind their actions and encourage them to find some balance in their social media use and how they interact with others.

Rather than looking to the latest TikTok challenge to gain likes or views, talk to teens about what they value and if that challenge moves them toward their values or away from them. Steering a child toward activities that support the values that are important to them can help improve their self-worth.

Helping teens find safe ways to increase their interactions with others, rather than through a social media app, can also be helpful in moving them away from the negative influence of social media and find balance in their life.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on July 29 reported 35,371 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 48 deaths since July 22.

According to the CDC, 66 counties are now rated at High Community Level for COVID-19. An additional 31 counties in Illinois are now rated at Medium Community Level.

Currently, the IDPH is reporting a total of 3,563,653 cases, including 34,357 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois since the beginning of the pandemic.

As of July 28, 1,459 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 153 patients were in the ICU and 43 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators. The preliminary sevenday statewide case rate is 278 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 Illinoisans.

“With 97 counties at an elevated risk level for COVID-19, the most important thing people can do to protect themselves is to make sure they are up-to-date on their vaccinations and boosters,” said IDPH Acting Director Amaal Tokars. “This is the most effective means we have to protect ourselves from serious illness, hospitalization and death. So please don’t wait to get up-to-date.”

Tokars is also urging parents and guardians to take the steps necessary to get children vaccinated, especially small children under 5 for whom COVID-19 vaccines were recommended by the CDC on June 18.
