Pritzker signs protections for immigrant tenants CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

People who rent homes or apartments in Illinois who are not United States citizens have new legal protections under state law.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill Aug. 21 that prohibits landlords from evicting or intimidating tenants based on their citizenship or immigration status.

“Where you were born has nothing to do with the ability to pay rent

on time, which is what the relationship between a landlord and a tenant should really be about,” Pritzker said in Chicago as he signed Senate Bill 1290 into law.

The bill is nearly identical to one lawmakers passed in 2018, but which former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed. And in signing the bill, Illinois became only the second state, behind California, to enact such a law.

New laws to encourage residents to pursue vocational training Illinois now has new laws in place to encourage residents to pursue vocational training programs.

State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) supported three new laws that will help expand and attract students to vocational and apprenticeship programs to help expand the state’s economy.

An engineer herself, Glowiak Hilton passed a new law that will require the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to conduct a study on the potential expansion of apprenticeship programs.

The study outlined in Senate Bill 2024 will focus on underserved communities with high unemployment. The Commerce Department will report its findings and recommendations to the General Assembly by June 1, 2020.

“This study will ensure that the

state dedicates more time to research how we can better meet the needs of employers across Illinois,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Our goal is to ensure the state’s workforce is meeting the needs of employers to maximize opportunities to grow our economy.”

Glowiak Hilton also supported two measures to increase enrollment in apprenticeship and workforce development programs in Illinois.

The first, Senate Bill 1167, creates the Adult Vocational Community College Scholarship Program, administered by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. The program would help support non-traditional students. The scholarship would be enough to cover the cost of tuition and fees to attend the community college without exceeding $2,000 per recipient per academic year.

The combination of lower demand and fuel production costs typically restores downward pressure on pump prices through the end of the year.

These measures received bipartisan support. Senate Bill 1167 goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020 while Senate Bill 1591 and Senate Bill 2024 go into effect immediately.

White urges motorists, students practice school bus safety With summer break coming to a close, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding motorists to be alert and extra cautious regarding children traveling by school buses to and from school.

“School bus safety has been a top priority of my office for the entire 21 years I have served as Secretary of State,” said White. “Our efforts have produced positive results, and we are a national leader in school bus safety. But we cannot grow complacent.

As another school year begins, I urge everyone using our roads to be cautious of children making their way to and from school.”

According to School Transportation News, during the 2018 school year, 17 kids across the nation were killed by motorists who failed to stop for school buses loading or unloading passengers. However, Illinois experienced a fatality-free school year.

White noted the success of his office’s Toby Tire School Bus Safety program, which emphasizes to students the dangers associated with riding school buses and crossing the street. White encourages those with school-age children to take time to remind them of the fundamentals of student transportation safety: • Always look both ways while crossing the street, even in bus loading zones.

• Always stay clear of the 10-foot “danger zone” that surrounds the bus.

• Maintain proper behavior on the bus by speaking in normal tones and always stay seated.

• Stay away from strangers.

“We must remain vigilant in our efforts to protect our children and ensure they get to and from school in a safe and responsible manner,” said White. “Our children are our future.”

Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, the chief Senate sponsor of the bill, echoed that sentiment.

“The current administration in Washington is openly hostile toward immigrant communities, and as a result, fear runs rampant in these communities,” Castro said. “Many people live with a constant worry that if they complain about unsafe housing conditions, a landlord might report them, because of their immigrant status, to authorities as retaliation for speaking up.”

State Rep. Theresa Mah, a Chicago Democrat and the lead sponsor of the bill in the House, said during floor debate May 26 that it came about as a result of specific incidents that had

occurred in her district, including a case in which a landlord allegedly threatened a tenant with eviction if she did not perform uncompensated work.

The bill also had support from groups that advocate for immigrant rights, including the Latin Policy Forum, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Andrew Timms, president of the Illinois Rental Property Owners Association, said in an interview that his organization was involved in drafting the bill and did not oppose it.

“We felt as though the bill that was passed through the Legislature really did target the people who were trying to use residency as a form of extortion,” he said. “We’re certainly opposed to extortion in any form.”

Fenton boys soccer coach Victor Ruiz is taking the team’s arrival in the Upstate Eight Conference as a major positive.

“With our move to the Upstate Eight, I see us in the top three within the conference with the hope of ‘Why not win the conference?’,” he said. “That is the goal.”

Fenton went 14-8-1 overall a year ago and took second in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division with a 5-1 mark. Fenton also won a Class 2A sectional and lost in the 2A supersectional (game to qualify for the state semifinals).

Back for Fenton are all-sectional and all-conference pick Ivan Jaramillo, along with all-conference selection Konrad Madej.

Jaramillo, a junior forward, scored 18 goals last season. Madej, a senior defender, had five goals, while fellow senior defender Jason Fuentes had four goals. Senior midfielder Ethan Rojas had three goals.

“I think our strength will be our team,” said Ruiz. “If we are able to stay disciplined we can be in many games.”

Ruiz said he’s been impressed thus far in practice with the team’s work ethic and willingness to get better.

On the offensive side of the field, Ruiz said working hard to put the ball in the net is a constant focus.

“We are building with the hopes of getting better,” he said.

Report: ‘Bullying’ rife in House Speaker’s office Former prosecutor paints bleak picture of Madigan’s exchief of staff

An investigation into the “workplace culture” of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s office found his former chief of staff contributed to a culture of bullying pervasive throughout the Capitol system.

The review, conducted by former federal prosecutor and former executive inspector general Maggie Hickey, was called for in response to allegations of harassment. She currently works for Schiff Hardin LLP. Hickey found “by far the most consistent criticism” of more than 100 people interviewed was “bullying,” according to the report released Tuesday. The issues, including “hazing” experienced by some workers, were described as “inevitable” due

to long hours workers spend in the Statehouse and the “militant” nature of Madigan’s staff.

Madigan and a group of female Democratic lawmakers called for Hickey to conduct the probe of the Speaker’s office in June 2018.

“I welcomed this independent review to better understand the workplace culture within the Office of the Speaker and to help improve the environment in the Capitol,” Madigan said in a press release.

One of the allegations was against Timothy Mapes, who was the speaker’s chief of staff for more than 25 years and clerk of the House for more than six years before resigning in June 2018.

Sherri Garrett, an account technician, worked in the Statehouse since the 1980s. She made eight allegations against Mapes, which Hickey classified into three groups in her report: illustrations of Mapes’ leadership approach, examples of how he managed workplace harassment complaints and allegations he made inappropriate comments at work.

she told Hickey that Mapes had “an inordinate amount of power in the State,” according to the report, including influence over harassment complaints. Hickey’s report said most of the people she interviewed, regardless of their opinion of Mapes, said he “commonly threatened people’s jobs” or “reminded them that they were dispensable.”

Hickey concluded Mapes “had a habit of being discourteous to workers and representatives.”

“The number of independently verified instances of Mr. Mapes’s derogatory behavior was overwhelming,” Hickey said in her report. “Mr. Mapes had a reputation for denigrating workers and threatening their jobs.”

The report also found Mapes made “discourteous and inappropriate comments” to and around Garrett, as well as other workers, to “[exert] power” over them.

“It is my position that the recent criticisms made against me do not truly appreciate the size of the responsibility of my position,” Mapes said in a statement distributed by his law firm, Clifford Law Offices. “The daily needs of my position required constant attention in order to ensure the successful operation of our government. I made every effort to satisfy these demands.”

But in her report, Hickey noted Mapes held “substantial actual and perceived authority” in Madigan’s office as well as the Capitol.

“Whether he intended it or not, many workers said that Mr. Mapes caused them to believe that they were easily replaceable, and therefore, they made sure not to make waves, even if they would have had workplace harassment concerns that

According to the police report, Flores was approached by officers because Flores was operating a motor vehicle with a flat tire and then parked the vehicle in a handicap parking spot. Upon further investigation, Flores was found to be driving under the influence, driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Flores was charged with those offences as well as aggravated battery, operating an unsafe motor vehicle and parking in a handicapped parking space. Flores was transported to DuPage County Jail.

Ashley N. Rinebold, 20, of Addison, was arrested near Fullerton & Stwarts Aves., at about 8 p.m. and was charged with driving with a suspected license and for operating a motor vehicle without proper lighting. Rinebold was released on an I-Bond.

Michael F. Martin, 23, of Chicago, was arrested at Itasca Road and Sable Drive at about 10:40 p.m. According to the police report, Martin was stopped for operating a motor vehicle without any lights illuminated. Martin used a false name when approached by officers. Upon further investigation, Martin was found

to be driving while license suspended. He was charged with driving with a suspended license, improper lighting and obstructing identification. He was released on an I-Bond.

Vydreon L. Rich, 37, of Oswego, was arrested on the 200 block of No. Lake Street at about 11 p.m. on a warrant out of the Mundelein Police Department for driving with a revoked license. Rich was transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Aug. 16 A 32-year-old Addison male was arrested on the 700 block of Lincoln Ave. at about 8:49 p.m. for domestic battery. According to the police report, the suspect struck a victim on the left eye, head butted the victim, and scratched the victim’s back. The suspect threatened to kill the victim or hire someone to kill the victim on previous occasions. The suspect was taken to DuPage County Jail.

Aug. 17 A 52-year-old Addison man was arrested on the 300 block of Lake Park Dr. at about 11:22 p.m. for domestic battery. According to the police report, the suspect struck the victim on the arm and pushed the victim to the ground, then struck another victim on that person’s arm.

The suspect was transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Aug. 18 Jason J. Thayil, 33, of Missouri City, Tex., was arrested on Lake St. at Swift at about 3:31 a.m. Accord-

ing to the police report, Thayil was stopped for speeding, and improper lane usage, and was found to be DUI. He was charged with those offences and released on an I-Bond.

Aug. 21 According to police, Melissa A. Pedroza, 25, of Streamwood, was arrested for DUI on the 700 block of W. Lake St. at about 12:04 a.m. She was released on an I-Bond.

Eduardo Contreras, 34, of Addison, was arrested near Lake at Lombard at about 9:34 p.m. According to the police report, Contreras was stopped for driving without lights, and was found to be driving while license revoked. Contreras was released on I-Bond.

Villa Park Aug. 9 License plates were reported stolen at The Odeum where, according to the police report, unknown offender(s) stole the license plates from two semi-tractors that were parking in the lot.

Aug. 10 Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported on the 900 block of So. Michigan at about 5 p.m. According to the police report, an unknown offender entered an unoccupied vehicle, while it was parking the driveway and stole a purse.

Giovanni Tavira-Berrum, 35, of Addison, was arrested at Oakland & St. Charles Rd. at about 10:35 p.m.

for reportedly driving without a valid license.

Theft was reported on the 300 block of No. Princeton. According to the police report, an unknown offender stole a package that had been delivered to the residence.

Aug. 11 Joseangel Villagran, 20, of Villa Park, was arrested on the 400 block of W. Division at about 2:30 a.m. for possession of cannabis, control/sale/ possession/discharge of air rifles.

Aug. 12 Residential burglary was reported on the first block of W. Kenilworth at about 3:30 p.m. According to the police report, an unknown offender entered a residence and stole several pieces of jewelry, clothing, identification, checks and electronic devices.

Aug. 14 A 46-year-old Villa Park man was arrested on the first block of So. Ardmore at about 10:30 a.m. for violation of an order of protection. The suspect was transported to the DuPage County Jail.

Erika Nunez-Arciniega, 30, of Chicago, was arrested near North Ave. & Ellsworth at about 11:15 p.m. for DUI, driving with a suspended license and driving without lights when required.

In the report, she suggested the speaker take on a greater role in his office and delegate additional responsibilities to senior members of his staff.

The document also states the speaker’s human resources department should be given additional authority, workers should receive more harassment training, and the office should have clearer reporting structures.

“I truly hope that the workplace culture changes so that people doing this important work are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve,” Garrett said in a press release.

The report said that while many people believe the power wielded by the speaker’s office “has been used to silence opposition” and “discouraged some people from coming forward,” many of those interviewed also believed the office “can use its power to eliminate harassment and discrimination from the Capitol workplace by being transparent, accountable, and a model for other workplaces and legislatures.”

“We agree,” Hickey wrote.

The investigation also focused on allegations made by Chicago Democratic Rep. Kelly Cassidy and activist Maryann Loncar.

Agony of ‘de-feet’ During the summer months, I enjoy going barefoot and dipping my feet into the lake. My husband and I experience our own version of a pedicure when we wade in a shallow sandbar and the minnows swimming there nibble on our toes.

It scared me at first – and grossed me out to be honest – to think they were eating on our toes. But it only tickles and is actually pleasant once you get used to the idea of a small fish treating your skin like a smorgasbord.

During the summer I become more aware of feet. It’s probably because they are more available and viewable during the height of sandal season.

This can be good or bad, depending on the overall state of the feet within question or within view.

Feet are as different as the people walking atop of them. Some are short, some long. Some are wide, some narrow. Some are hairy, some bald. Some have polished toenails; others go for a more natural look.

Some are rather cute, others eye averting (ahem).

Like many things in life, my husband and I differ on foot stance.

We are definitely not feet twins; our toes are not even distantly related.

The height of my toes decreases from the tallest big toe to the shortest little toe in a uniform fashion. I am able to trim my toenails straight across because they grow straight and end straight.

I have very neat and orderly feet. (I wish the same could be said about the rest of my body and my life in general, but that’s another topic.)

The length of my husband’s toes conjures up a one-word description: anarchy. There is no law, no order, no pattern of tidiness; it’s simple disarray. His toenails are not cut neatly straight across because they do not grow neatly straight across.

They are jagged and curved in places where jags and curves are unneeded and unwanted.

Yet he doesn’t care and is basically unaware of the chaos living under his ankles.

My husband doesn’t give much thought to his toes, which is a good thing because pondering the subject would likely bring about frustration. What can a person do to change their toes? Not much besides polish and it’s highly unlikely my husband would ever go there. No, you’ve got to work with the hand (or in this case foot) you’re dealt.

with the overall look of my feet in sandals, I realize this is not the reason feet were put on earth. Feet have so much more to do than look pretty in flip-flops. They are workhorses in the plainest sense of the word.

Our feet carry the entire weight of our bodies – all day, every day.

Every step we take is dependent on one foot or the other. When we go barefoot, they get dirty. When we wear shoes they get sweaty. They get calloused and ingrown from everyday wear and tear. They get blisters when we wear the wrong shoes.

We moisturize our face, arms, legs and body but often forget about our feet until sandal season is looming and they are literally calling out for help. They do so much, and all we give them in return is the occasional pedicure, which if I am being honest, I have never experienced.

I hear many people think pedicures are fantastic. Luxurious even. I don’t think I could enjoy one; someone picking at and messing with my feet just seems a little too up close and personal.

Unless it was a school of minnows. Then I could do that.

Word meanings change with time and teens. It’s not easy keeping up with modern slang. And I generally don’t try.

Certainly I know the word “chill.”

Verb and adjective. Let’s just stay in tonight and chill. He’s really chill, I like him. Or perhaps instead of telling someone to calm down and relax, you tell them to chill.

There are some terms I can guess.

“Extra” means to be overly much, dramatic, over the top. Someone who wants a lot of attention or goes wild or is excessive. She’s so extra.

“Flex” has a new connotation and these days is not just for showing off your muscles. To flex is to show off anything. Driving his dad’s Porsche – he just wants to flex. My generation

Fitness instructor ‘s business celebrates 25 years Darlene Galgan once taught at Addison Trail

Darlene Galgan enjoys sharing her “heart and sole” with others, and while she may have taken some time to pause, she hasn’t put the brakes on her enthusiasm.

Galgan is the owner of Heart & Sole Fitness, Inc., and the award-winning program has been helping seniors get or stay fit for 25 years now, whether it be at Beacon Hill or Lexington retirement communities in Elmhurst and Lombard.

Galgan, who was first interviewed for her 20th anniversary, related how she got into working with seniors in a way she didn’t expect.

She had been a physical education teacher, girls gymnastics coach and dance instructor, but a back injury changed her career path that led to working primarily with senior citizens.

Galgan took dance lessons as a child, and went on to graduate from

DePaul University with a degree in physical education. She related that she had a gym teacher she really liked, which helped influence her career choice.

She went on to work at Addison Trail High School, teaching physical education and dance, and coached girls gymnastics, which she said was new as a sport at the time.

Her background in dance was an asset in coaching gymnastics, Galgan mentioned, and the girls won a state championship in 1977.

After starting a family and taking some time off, she injured her back and ended up having surgery. That prompted her to modify her dance regimen, and Galgan took a class at College of DuPage to get recertified for teaching.

One of her classmates, Sandy Stoub, asked if she ever considered working with seniors, she recalled, and Galgan went along to observe Stoub’s senior citizen class at a Lombard church.

Galgan was intrigued by what she saw and consequently fell in love with teaching seniors.

“I had never thought of going that route,” she admitted.

Galgan, who also taught jazz aerobics and tap dance for the Warrenville Community Club, went to work for Lexington as an independent contractor for Essert.

“They were mostly interested in me teaching dance,” she recalled.

When Essert’s business closed, Galgan remembers wondering what she would do next. The Lexington residents organized a petition to keep her on as an instructor, and the administration agreed, so Heart and Sole Fitness, Inc. was born.

She had four independent contractor instructors and a handful of substitute instructors who each had their own expertise, Galgan said, and she was able to concentrate on teaching dance to her seniors.

She also taught adults with developmental disabilities through the South East Association for Special Parks and Recreation, or SEASPAR.

The instructor explained how she teaches routines that adapt to participants’ physical limitations, but residents have always been willing to try new moves.

They typically warm up sitting down and like to groove to Big Band music.

In 2014, Heart and Sole received a Program Recognition Award from the American Heart Association.

In 2017, Galgan took some time off from teaching and focused on overseeing her instructors — who have their own areas of expertise, including a class in Ageless Grace.

Currently, “I’m easing back into it,” she related, adding that she has been teaching a class she calls “chi-

slow,” which has a basis in tai chi.

The instructor said the exercises can be done sitting down and “They all love it and it’s safe.”

“They enjoy it and I enjoy it,” she added.

Looking back on her 25 years with the business, Galgan said she loves working with the seniors and reiterated how “It wasn’t a population I had ever considered.”

However, her greatest joy, which hasn’t changed in 25 years, is “being with the people.”

“We’re always inviting people to the classes,” she said.

Pritzker signs bill phasing in $40K minimum teacher pay

Some teachers in Illinois will get a pay raise starting next year, thanks to a bill that Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law Aug. 22.

House Bill 2078, which passed the General Assembly in the final days of the 2019 session, phases in an increase in minimum teacher salaries to $40,000 a year over the next four years.

“As Illinois’ children head back to school this week and next, this new law says to them and their parents loud and clear, we value teachers,” Pritzker said during a Statehouse news conference.

The bill is aimed at relieving what many have described as a severe statewide teacher shortage in Illinois.

During the 2018-2019 school year, Pritzker said, roughly 1,500 teaching positions across the state were unfilled.

“We need to start taking this problem seriously and this legislation is a

good step toward solving it,” state Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, the chief Senate sponsor of the bill, said in a statement.

According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education, the average salary of a public school teacher in the state was $65,721 during the 20172018 academic year, the most recent year for which figures are available.

But the salaries for individual teachers varies greatly, depending on their location, years of experience, their own level of education and the financial resources of the district in which they teach.

Officials estimate the new law will affect about 8,000 of the state’s 127,000 full-time public school teachers.

Portrait of a Soldier, a memorial art exhibit featuring hundreds of handsketched portraits of Illinois service members killed in action since 9/11, will be displayed for a week at Elmhurst College beginning on Sept. 9.

Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, who established the exhibit in 2004, will introduce it during an opening ceremony on Sept. 11.

The origins of the exhibit date to 2004, when Cameron Schilling, an artist from Mattoon, drew a portrait of Charles Neeley, a fellow Mattoon resident who died in Iraq, and gave it to Neeley’s parents.

About a year later, Schilling decided to draw a portrait of each Illinois service member killed in action since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

He sends the originals to the service members’ families, and copies are

added to the Portrait of a Soldier display.

The exhibit has traveled across the state in recent years. It includes portraits of more than 300 members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. It is arranged by each soldier’s date of death, beginning with Patrick Murphy, of Flossmoor, who died on Sept. 11, 2001.

The exhibit will be on display from Monday, Sept. 9 through Sunday, Sept. 15, in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College. An opening ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the Founders Lounge.

“It’s a very hard job and teachers don’t mind that, but we also want to be secure in knowing we’ll be able to raise our own families and that our families will be secure,” she said. “This law goes a long way towards that.”

Under current law, the minimum salary for a teacher ranges from $9,000 for someone with less than a bachelor’s degree to $11,000 for someone with a master’s degree. That law hasn’t changed since the early 1980s.

The new law raises the minimum salary to $32,076 in the 2020-2021 school year. It then adds $2,500 in each of the next two years, finally arriving at $40,000 in the 2023-2024 school year.

After that, mandatory increases will be indexed to inflation.

Although passage of the bill will increase costs for some school districts, Pritzker noted that this year’s budget included a $375 million increase in state funding for K-12 education.

According to a fiscal analysis of the bill, the higher minimum salary will

add, on average, about 0.5 percent to each district’s “adequacy target” under the state’s new Evidence Based Funding system.

It also could widen the gap between current funding and the adequacy target for many districts.

Under that funding system, each district is assigned a target for adequate funding, and those that are the furthest below their target receive top priority for funding increases each year, with the goal of providing adequate funding to all districts by 2027.

EWAN’s 5th ‘Cue for a Cause fires up the grills on Sunday

In what has quickly become a Labor Day Weekend tradition in the Elmhurst community, the fifth annual ‘Cue for a Cause, presented by the Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network (EWAN). This year’s event takes place Sunday, Sept. 1 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. in the municipal lot on Vallette, just east of York St., behind the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Admission is free.

Registered competitors are no doubt perfecting their barbecue techniques in anticipation of the chance to walk away with bragging rights and a prize. First, second and third place grillers will be recognized in the categories of ribs, chicken and sauce. The team with the highest combined score among all three categories will earn the top prize of ‘Cue for a Cause Grand Champion.

Among the invited judges, all of whom are local, is Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley.

The ‘Cue isn’t just for competitors, so the public is encouraged to come out and watch what happens when competitors go toe-to-toe, or “grill-to-grill.” Four live bands

will provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening.

Elmhurst’s own “Barbeque Jim” Lawshe will fire up the grill to offer a full range of items to guests from hot dogs to burgers to pork on a stick.

Even a veggie burger will be available. Beer and wine will be available for purchase and the root beer float stand is always a hit – among kids and adults alike. There will be a dedicated kids area with games for the younger set, while adults check out the items in the raffle tent.

While competitors can’t serve their ribs or chicken to the crowds, people will have the opportunity to taste the sauces and vote on their favorite. Prizes are awarded at the end of the event, so stick around to the very end to learn who’s BBQ was the BEST! The Warriors return a number of girls from last year’s team, including sophomore Emma Rattana, who qualified for the state meet as a freshman.

Also back are juniors Kayla RaueLease and Peyton Mitrick. RaueLease was 16th at the West Suburban Conference junior-varsity meet last year. Senior Julianna Paulsen also is looking to make a difference for the Warriors.

“Our returners are all leaders and

are setting the expectations for the younger players,” said White, who noted he has 18 golfers in the program this season.

White has noticed improvements right out of the gates. “I’m impressed by their determination to getting better. We have girls who played a number of times over the summer and are ready for the season.”

White likes the fact his team has a willingness to be challenged and become better. “We need to stay focused, reduce mistakes on the course and play with a great deal of pride,” he said.

And that’s great news for the Willowbrook girls volleyball team.

“Our defense will continue to be our greatest strength,” coach Irene Mason said.

Willowbrook returns three-year all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division selection Payton Ceh (5-3, libero, senior), who will anchor the back line for the Warriors.

“The defensive intensity and competitive energy in the gym has been awesome,” Mason added. “I’m anticipating another standout season from

Payton, who is a four-year returning varsity libero. I’m also looking forward to having Lizzy Bruschuk (56, DS-OH, sophomore) and Payton back next to each other in the back row this season. Their competitiveness drives our team’s overall effort.”

Willowbrook won 15 matches last season and went 3-3 in WSC Gold action.

Also back for the Warriors are junior setter-right-side hitter Grace Reckamp (5-10) and sophomore setter-right-side hitter Katie Linnig (57).

Key newcomers to the group include sophomore outside hitter Kyla Ostrowski (5-8) and freshman rightside hitter Natalie Cipriano (5-6).

“I’ve been most impressed by our overall enthusiasm and knowledge and skill set of our returning starting setters (Reckamp and Linnig),”

said Mason. “Grace and Katie have emerged as vocal leaders for our team. I’m also impressed with the full recovery Payton has made since undergoing season-ending surgery last October. She has been pushing herself to get back to where she was and looks as good as new.”

Mason said the Warriors have been hard at work on the offensive end. “We are continuing to try and improve offensively and find hitters who are going to step up and consistently be a scoring threat for us,” she said.

Mason said aggressive serving is going to be a “crucial part of our offense.”

Reckamp and Linnig will run that offense. “Both have been working hard all spring and summer,” said

Expectations high for Addison Trail girls volleyball team Blazers have six starters back from last year’s 17-win team

Addison Trail girls volleyball coach Dan Styler doesn’t hide his excitement for his team this season.

“We expect to finish in the top tier of the West Suburban Gold this season,” he said. “This is the strongest group we’ve had since the 2015 team that tied for first place and the 2016 team that finished in second place.”

The Blazers are coming off a 2018 season where it went 17-19 overall and posted a 4-2 record in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action, which resulted in a third-place finish.

fact Addison Trail has six starters back from the 2018 team, headlined by senior outside hitter Jessica D’Ambrose (5-6), a four-year starter who finished last year with 214 kills, 242 digs and 36 aces. She’s a two-time all-WSC Gold selection.

Also back are seniors Amy Reyes (5-2, setter), Katrina Beilanski (5-7, outside hitter/right-side hitter) and Pauline Wirbicki (5-2, defensive specialist), along with juniors Mia Johnson (5-10, middle blocker/right-side hitter) and Ally Severino (5-10, middle blocker/outside hitter). Reyes is a three-year starter who had 354 assists and 91 digs last year. Beilanski also is a three-year starter and had 128 kills, 101 digs and 39 aces last season. Wirbicki recorded 202 digs and 12 aces last season, while Johnson had 113 kills, 36 blocks and 10 aces. Severino

had 107 kills, 30 aces and 37 blocks.

Styler said Addison Trail lacks height, a trait it is able to overcome.

“We certainly lack height, however we make up for it with resilient defenders and with the versatility of our core group of players,” he said. “The majority of our key players started last year.

It shows in our capacity to play with purpose and with greater efficiency.”

Styler has noticed a high intensity level in the practice gym so far. “Our kids are ready to compete,” he said.

“In a six-on-six setting, we are already pushing each other with longer volleys. We are seeing a shift in player-led competitions, instead of relying solely on their coaches to inspire them to compete.”

Offensively, Styler thinks his group can stretch teams. “Our distribution will be more balanced this year and we

are capable of running a faster tempo,” he explained. “In addition to our leader in kills returning, we also are confident several other players will build on their 2018 stats.”

Styler labels his back-row defenders as scrappy and noted blocking mechanics have been a point of emphasis.

“We are focusing on improving our blocking mechanics as our first line of defense,” he said. “Passing and serving efficiency will still be our key indicator to drive our success this year. We will have a blend of old and new faces anchoring our serve-receive this season.”

Reyes gives Addison Trail experience at the setting position. “Amy will run the show for us this season,” said Styler. “She had significant playing time on the varsity level the past two seasons. She will be one of the best undersized setters in the area this season.”

Styler said one key will be closing out tight matches and adapting quickly to change, “based on scouting reports and in-match situations that force us to change,” he said.

Styler said he sees two intangibles he feels will be difference-makers. “They are all intrinsically motivated and are all on the same page,” he said. “We’re fortunate that our teaching in practice is all skill-based and is focused on our team strategy. We’re able to focus on those things because our kids play with a clear purpose.”

Addison Trail opened the season earlier this week with contests against Lake Park and Maine East. The Blazers head to the Metea Valley invitational Friday.

Fenton football team ready for season

The Fenton football team continues to make progress under thirdyear head coach Matt Lynch.

“We’ve made tremendous progress,” said Lynch, whose team went 4-5 a year ago. “Every day we are taking big steps forward.”

Lynch saw plenty that he liked

“No complaints,” he said late last week. “We are motoring along. Everything is starting to come together.

We still have a week to go until we play a game, but everything is coming together nicely and things are starting to gel.”

Lynch loves his team’s work ethic heading into the season. “We will play hard,” he said. “We have a group of kids that will compete and they will be out there playing hard in practices and in games.”

Lynch said progress has been widespread, but there still is work to be done. “There is no one or two

Mason added the mental side of the game will be another key for the Warriors. “We have to work hard, be confident and believe we can compete with and beat anyone and everyone who is on the other side of the net,” she said.

Mason noted Willowbrook has finished fourth in the WSC Gold the last few years. The team would like to change that this season. “We’re looking to step up and move our way up to the top,” she said.

Fenton is now a member of the Upstate Eight Conference. The Bison will play nine UEC games this year (no non-conference games), with the first one coming Friday at home against Elgin Larkin. The Bison also will be home in Week 2 against West Chicago.

“We are excited to play new teams that we have not played before,” said Lynch. “We don’t know much about them and what to expect. We will take it as it comes.”

Providence went 5-5 last year and made the IHSA Class 6A state playoffs.

Willowbrook went 11-1 last season. The Warriors posted a perfect 9-0 regular-season record and advanced to the IHSA Class 7A state quarterfinals. Willowbrook has qualified for the state-quarterfinal round in each of the last three seasons.

Warriors split their first two meets of the season The Willowbrook boys golf team opened its 2019 season with an Aug. 19 loss to West Chicago at Sugar Creek Golf Course. The visiting Wildcats earned a team score of 165, while Willowbrook posted a team score of 170. Senior Logan Rattana joined juniors Nick Cipriano and John Donovan in shooting nine-hole scores of 42 on the par-32 course. Senior Utah Keehner contributed a 44 to round out the Warriors’ team score of 170 (42+42+42+44).

Willowbrook improved to 1-1 with a 194-219 win over Elmwood Park on Aug. 22. Junior Jake Cieslak shot Willowbrook’s low round of the day and earned medalist honors in the meet with his nine-hole score of 47. Rattana contributed a 48, while freshman Brett Vandergrift shot a 49.

Cipriano turned in a 50.

The Warriors will host the Willowbrook Invitational at Sugar Creek Golf Course this Saturday morning.

Some members of the team will also play in Saturday afternoon’s meet at White Pines Golf Club in Bensenville.

Dental insurance premiums can be more expensive than simply paying out of your own pocket for routine checkups and cleanings many times. Most dental policies emphasize prevention and diagnostics, typically covering two annual exams and cleanings and x-rays annually.
