Governor signs bill increasing protection for Illinois seniors

Law establishes standards for provider training; backed

by Alzheimer’s Association

According to a release issued by thAccording to a release issued by the Illinois chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Governor Bruce Rauner has signed legislation creating the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services Act. Senate Bill 2301, an initiative of the Alzheimer’s Association and sponsored by State Senator Dave Koehler (D-Peoria) and State Representative Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park), establishes the first minimum training standards for healthcare providers who promote their own expertise in dementia care. This law goes into effect immediately.

“This measure cracks down on deceptive advertising claims made by healthcare providers that they simply cannot deliver on,” said Jen Belkov, vice-president of Public Policy for the Alzheimer’s Association, Illi-

BBAA’s Summer Slugfest Baseball Tournament a great success The 16th annual Bensenville Summer Slugfest All Star baseball tournament just completed in late July. This year’s Slugfest had 34 different teams from 21 different baseball organizations competing at the 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U levels.

The Summer Slugfest is an in-house All Star tournament that is hosted by the BBAA (Bensenville Boys and Girls Athletic Association) that offers a five game guarantee and is played at Redmond Park, DiOrio Park, and Fenton High School.

The Village of Bensenville and the Bensenville Park District did a wonderful job of getting the fields ready for play and dealing with the few days of rain. Most participants raved about the field conditions and had nothing but praise for tournament coordinators Jason Sabala and Marty O’Connell.

Bensenville’s 14U team made it to the championship game for the first time in over 10 years but fell short against a rock solid Dunham Park team that tore the cover off the ball the entire tournament.

The 12U, 10U, and 8U divisions had three of the most entertaining championship games in years. Welles Park held on to win 7-5 over Oak Park at the 12U level; Oak Park beat Franklin Park 2-0 in a great pitchers dual with some rock solid defense at the 10U level;

Horner Park flashed some serious leather in beating Franklin Park at the 8U level by a score of 10-8.

Now signed into law, this groundbreaking legislation will apply to any care-provider claiming to have the expertise to care for an individual with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Caregivers will have to prove they have the adequate training required by law to care for an Alzheimer’s patient.

According to the association, there are currently about 220,000 Illinois residents living with Alzheimer’s disease. It is estimated that that number will increase to 260,000 Illinoisans by 2025.

Slices of life They are the same person, in two different-sized bodies, born a generation apart. They might have been twins, had they not been father and son. They are my husband and our youngest.

They share similar personalities as well as a sharp sense of humor, affection for storytelling, tendency for voicing strong opinions, a love of debate and an unwillingness to back down from a disagreement (especially with each other). They are information gatherers, knowledge sponges, trivia fact hunting hounds and conspiracy theorists.

Now that our nest is thinning, I find myself spending more time with just the two of them – an introvert sandwiched between two extroverts. Heaven help me.

This weekend, we did a little yard work. There were a number of branches littering the sidewalk in front of the house and my husband called upon our boys to help pick them up. It was a reasonable request.

thing and everything one can find to bicker about related to sticks on the sidewalk. They disagreed on stick gathering technique and how many sticks should be gathered in one armload. Whether gloves were a necessity or hindrance. About the proper way to transport sticks and the best place to put the sticks after they were removed from the sidewalk. Whether the sticks would make good kindling. Where the sticks came from. If a stick fell on the sidewalk and no one was around, would it make a sound?

And so on. So many sticks so little time.

I heard their banter from my crouched position in the garden (pulling weeds) and tried not to listen. As far as I was concerned,

nothing (NOTHING) they said had any depth of meaning. Still, neither would give in to the other’s suggestions and/or arguments.

This happens all the time. Sometimes I think they’ll drive me bonkers. Sometimes I think they already have. I plead with them to stop. But they enjoy themselves too much to heed my requests.

Simply put, their bickering is a game they love to play and to which I’m not privy to the rules or enjoyment factor.

On other days, the situation is completely the opposite. They are the best of buds with the same viewpoints and expressions and opinions on everything from fantasy football draft picks to the best fast food French fries to the funda-

mentals of politics. They feed off each other’s energy no matter what the topic.

They were born with curious minds and fire off questions like they are conducting an interrogation. My son throws out question after question and my husband delights in providing the answers at breakneck speed.

All the verbalizations floating in the air only serve to make me feel unsettled and unable to focus.

When my son attempts to grill me in such a manner (and he does), I can’t keep up. “One question at a time,” I say. “Mom needs to think.”

My husband and son are peas in a pod or dueling banjos – depending on the day. They debate and dispute and discuss and deliberate

and I’m not sure which of them enjoys himself more. As for me, I’m like the creamy center of an Oreo – stuck in the middle playing either the role of odd mom out or referee.

It can be dizzying, but despite my complaints, I’m sandwiched between two of my favorite cookies. I’ve got my own double stuff, and it’s pretty sweet.

The saga of selling houses, evaluating what you want, and doing that As I wrote previously, we listed our house and it “sold” in nine days. They were not contingent on selling a home, only on getting financing. I was happy because they were only the second people to look and now I didn’t have to keep the place show ready at all times.

We didn’t have to do an open house.

All we had to do was find a house.

The short version of the long story is that we found a condo and the sellers there agreed to the quick closing date that our buyer wanted. So the sifting and sorting and releasing of stuff began. (You can read my past musings on my website.) Last week, a week before our set closing date, the buyer’s deal fell through. Thud.

ally embody. But I am human. I am not always a peach. My realtor will attest to that. (But she is the type of person who wouldn’t.)

It took me a day to get over my upset and regain my equilibrium. There was no point in snapping at my realtor. (There never is a point to snapping at anyone, but it happens.) When the initial surprise and disappointment dissipated, my prince and I used the new

situation as a chance to evaluate again what we really wanted.

Options were abundant. (They always are, even when we are blind to them.) Did we want to stay in our joy house? We had no buyer now. We could stay put. The masses (friends, family, acquaintances, Facebookers, garage salers) seemed to lament the fact that we were giving up our fabulous retreat here. Again I had to ask myself if I was nuts to leave this place. Nuts or not, we again confirmed we were ready for the next stop on our joy journey. Onward.

Because of our deal falling through on the house, we had an out to not go through with the purchase of the condo. More discussion. Is this what we want? A condo, that particular condo?

Find something else? Go off to France

and deal with it when we got back?

We opted to carry on with that purchase. We want ease, and a little pond with nature in the backyard, not a stereotypical condo environment. By the time you read this, we will have closed on that purchase. That too seems to have disappointed some people.

Folks assumed we were selling to either move out of country or out of state or go be vagabond gypsies. We considered all of the above. We decided to do what felt right for us for right now.

Duh. And what about getting a B&B? For now, that is not right. It does not feel easy to me, and the word ease is my guiding light at this point in time. I liked the idea of an inn because I love pretty places, I love to decorate, and I

love to meet new people. I don’t have to run a B&B to have that.

We also love being able to go and do what we want, when we want. That holds a stronger appeal.

Our ultimate desire is to enjoy life.

My motto still is let it be easy. We trust everything will all fall into place. It always does. This house is back on the market and there is a showing tomorrow. Maybe by the time this hits print, we will have a new contract on our house. Fingers crossed. Let it be easy.

Addison names appear on list of DSCC honorees Agency holds Volunteer of the Year awards

Each year, the DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC) selects

Volunteer of the Year award winners in several categories, recognizing exceptional individuals and organizations who have given their time and talent.

The Volunteers of the Year award went to Catherine and Stan Janusz who volunteer at the York Township Senior Center in Lombard.

The couple was awarded at the 16th Annual Volunteer Celebration

at the Diplomat West in Elmhurst on July 24.

Volunteers from Addison made the list of award recipients including Ken Vairo and Marie Gerth, who were among the list of 11 Nutrition Site Volunteers of the Year. Frank Plekavic and his family of Addison were named Chore Days Volunteers of the Year.

Vairo made the list of Ambassador Club awardees, having volunteered more than 200 hours.

Each year, volunteers give more than 100,000 hours to DSCC, a value of more than $2 million, DSCC said. Volunteers prepare and deliver meals, socialize with seniors, help conduct well-being checks, and help with home and yard tasks.

The DuPage Senior Citizens

Council (DSCC) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), volunteer-driven organization, dedicated to helping seniors live with safety and dignity. Since 1975, DSCC has provided a variety of programs and services for seniors, including Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels), Community Dining, Home Maintenance and Chore Days, Health and Wellness Education, and Well-Being Checks.

Addison resident provides support for People with Disabilities Addison resident Greg Czajka is what you would call a “handyman,” not only because he is a carpenter by trade, but also because he’s always using his skills to make others happy.

Under Czajka’s leadership, the event that once had a team of nine volunteers and raised just over $1,000 has grown to a group of 80 and generates over $8,000 a year.

He hopes to continue to grow Candy Days and make it more than a twoday event every August. He says what keeps him going is having a personal connection and seeing the difference in the lives of those he cares about, as well as their families.

“It is the people who work at Ray Graham and the progress they make with those served at Ray Graham that keeps me doing what I do,” he said.

Candy Days will be held on Aug. 26-27 and volunteers are still needed to work local street intersections in several suburban areas such as Downers Grove, Hoffman Estates, Elmhurst, and Addison. For more information, visit raygraham.org.

Czajka’s love for RGA continued to grow and in 2008, he and his coworkers found themselves participating in a candy drive to raise funds for the organization.

Today, he is the vice president of Carpenters Local Union 839 and coordinates the event now known as Candy Days, which relies on union members and their families to stand at local intersections requesting donations to support RGA.

Willowbrook football team ready to open season Warriors boys golf team competes in Addison Trail invitational

The Willowbrook football team will look to improve upon last year’s 5-4 overall record that did not earn the team a playoff berth despite it being playoff eligible.

The Warriors fell short on the play-

off points tiebreaker formula the IHSA uses.

Willowbrook returns three offensive starters including senior offensive lineman Lucas Olson (6-2, 260), senior wide receiver Jonathan Kelso (5-10, 178), junior running back Jack Jessen (5-11, 189) and junior offensive lineman Brandon Loth (6-0, 203).

Defensive starters back include Kelso (DB), Jessen (linebacker), Loth (linebacker), senior Freddie Clay (5-11, 169, DB) and junior Kevon Dobbins (6-0, 183, DL).

Other key returners include seniors M.J. Ranieri (6-0, 189, QBDB), Luke Halloran (6-3, 260, OL-DL), Zak Walenga (6-3, 256, OL-DL), Dylan Worden (5-9, 210, OL-LB), Will Schuller (6-0, 187, TE-DL) and Mike Dembowski (61, 180, K-WR).

A key newcomer to the team is senior wide receiver-defensive back Khalif Copeland (5-10, 181).

Fenton football team ready to move forward Bison have sights set on a return to the postseason

One of the Fenton football team’s main goals this year is simple.

Get back to the playoffs.

“That has to be the goal,” said Fenton coach Mark Kos. “Our program always should have that goal.

The day we stop setting that goal of making the playoffs is the day I shouldn’t be coaching this team anymore.”

Fenton is coming off a 2015 season where it went 2-7. But Kos is optimistic about the group he has returning, as well as the newcomers who have been added.

On offense, Fenton returns seniors Danny Lucas (6-6, 335, center), Angelo Duvall (6-4, 340, right tackle), Greg Cazares (5-7, 155, running back), Tony Cantarelli (6-1, 190, wide receiver), Tyler Santagata (6-2, 195, wide receiver), Tim Wolf (6-1, 195, left tackle) and junior Dylan Butts (6-2, 190, RB).

Newcomers on offense include sophomore quarterback Kyle Cacioppo (5-11, 160), junior wide receiver DJ Kelly (5-6, 147), junior wide receiver Carlos Mercado (5-10, 185), senior wide receiver Nick Mercado (5-8, 155), junior offensive lineman Anthony Park (5-10, 195) and junior offensive lineman Colton Fredericks (6-1, 210).

“We have versatility on offense,” said Kos. “We did some real good things this summer. We allowed the kids to kind of put their own signature on things within the rules of our offense. The kids have embraced the offense. They have been like sponges.

They are looking to soak up more knowledge. It was an incredible summer in terms of work ethic.

I’m happy with the skill kids, I’m happy with our backfield, I’m happy with our quarterback and our No. 2 quarterback and I’m confident our offensive line is going to be the offensive line we need them to be. We’ll have to be a little patient at the beginning of the year, but once we get going it’s going to be a very dynamic offense capable of producing.”

Defensive returners for Fenton include senior

Other key contributors on defense include junior safety Amari Baldwin (6-0, 172), Carlos Mercado (cornerback), senior inside linebacker Nikko Castaneda (5-6, 175), Wolf (defensive end), Park (defensive end) and senior nose tackle Kyle Higgins (5-7, 185).

“I like our aggressiveness, communication and discipline on defense,” said Kos. “We have more experience returning on defense. We had a great summer with the defense. I’m really excited about what this group can do. We return experience and we have versatility. That will help us expand what we can do defensively. We weren’t afraid to throw too much at the kids this summer. I’m excited to see what this group is capable of becoming.”

Kos has seen this group make big strides since last season. “We definitely were very young last year,” he said. “We were re-watching game film from the Week 1 game last year,” he said. “It’s amazing to see the kids who are still in the room with us. We really brought a team to varsity football. We have great senior leadership and that has shown through. There is no sense of class divisions with the kids. They just want the 11-best players on the field who give us the best chance to win. This is a hungry group. They hold each other accountable and push each other in practice. That makes the lives of the coaches much easier. We can focus on the Xs and Os instead of focusing on some of the behind-the-scenes stuff.”

Kos sees another year of tough matchups on Fenton’s side of the Metro Suburban Conference.

“We have to get back to competing for conference championships,” he said.

“We have expectations we’ve set for ourselves.

We are not satisfied with the manner in which we played the last two seasons. We’re excited for the opportunity for redemption. There’s only one way to go and that’s up and that’s our goal without a doubt.

It’s been a long time since Week 9 last year. We’re ready to play football.”

Nick Mercado, Butts and Prunotto are the Fenton team captains this year.

Scores were counted as one’s total over par after 13 holes. Junior Buddy Martens was 15-over, while junior Tim Keefe was 16-over. Junior Max Venchus and junior Greg Danielson both were 21-over.

Experience on the side of Addison Trail boys soccer team Blazers look to improve upon 12-win season from a year ago

Experience? The Addison Trail boys soccer team has it in spades.

And it’s that experience the Blazers hope will help them surpass last year’s 12-7-2 mark that included a 3-3 showing in the competitive West Suburban Conference Gold Division. Addison Trail has seven returning starters back this season.

“We are really looking forward to the season,” said Addison Trail coach Ryan Dini. “We have a lot of seniors on the team (12 of the 18 players are seniors). As a coach, I have been really looking forward to seeing what this team can do once the majority of them were seniors. Five seniors have been on the varsity since they were sophomores so we have a lot experience.

It’s a very experienced group of soccer players. We are eager to start playing games.”

Back for the Blazers are the likes of senior center-midfielder Tom Kania, who had eight goals and seven assists last year and is a four-year varsity starter.

He has 26 career goals. Senior defender Brian Ramos also is back, along with senior forward Enrique Luna, who had 12 goals and six assists last season.

Senior defender Uriel Martinez is a four-year varsity starter and

was an all-WSC Gold and all-sectional choice a year ago.

Key newcomers to the team include Senior defender Edmond Montano and junior goalkeeper Jean Avila.

“Edmond is from the Chicago Magic Academy and has great size and speed, and is dangerous in the air.”

Dini cites strong team speed as a key strength and notes the team must continue to work on defending star players and working together in the midfield.

“Our team speed and ball-control style should give teams a lot of trouble,” he said. “We have a lot of excellent players, but they need to get more chemistry on the soccer field.”

Addison Trail had a prosperous summer session where it won a summer league title with a 10-0 record. “We had a great summer league,” said Dini. “We beat teams such as Lyons Township, Oak Park and Lane Tech to name a few.”

Dini likes the caliber of teams that appear on the Blazers’ schedule this season. “Our schedule is very difficult this year,” he said.

“We host the Joe Novy tournament and are playing in the Pepsi tournament. We are looking to finish in the top half of the conference and compete for a Top 6 seed in the sectional.”

The Blazers are looking for their first regional title since 2001.

Addison Trail hosts Fenton Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on alumni night.

The Blazers welcome WSC Gold powerhouse Morton on Sept. 6 and will head to Willowbrook for the District 88 showdown on Sept. 27.

Addison Trail girls volleyball team looking to take next step Blazers coming off 2015 season where they won 22 matches and shared the conference title

The good news: The Addison Trail girls volleyball team won 22 matches last season and shared the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title with Downers Grove South with a 5-1 record.

The even better news: The majority of contributors from last season are back a year older and stronger for the Blazers and coach Dan Styler.

“We have experience,” he said. “We’ve been in situations the last few seasons where we were able to give a lot of young talent in the program a lot of experience. We’re very happy to have a great senior class this season and some other strong returning players. It gives us a greater sign of maturity and that’s something we’ve seen the last few years.”

Addison Trail returns eight seniors including Sarah Petrbok (outside hitter), Keara Schmitt (right-side hitter), Anastasia Labadessa (setter), Alyssa Pham (defensive specialist), Alyssa Ramir

(defensive specialist), Danielle Tulke (defensive specialist), Sarah Garces (outside hitter) and Michelle Krefft (middle blocker).

Others who will help the Blazers include sophomore Nina Muell (outside hitter), juniors Nicci Scorza (middle blocker) and Giovanna Scarbaggio (middle blocker) and freshman Jess D’Ambrose (outside hitter). Muell played on the varsity as a freshman and D’Ambrose, Styler said, is expected to be a key contributor.

“We have a really well-rounded group,” said Styler. “We looked very good over the summer and we’re looking to get even better. We do not have a tall team. Height is not our biggest strength. Our players are well-rounded and have good speed and athleticism. That makes us a tough matchup despite the size limitations we have. The girls have worked very hard during the off-season. They had a taste of success and they know they can continue to get better. We have some very lofty goals this season. So far the work ethic has matched the task that has been set forth and the goals we’ve established.”

One of those goals is another conference title.

“That’s a goal every year,” said Styler. “Last year was the first time we won the conference in nine years. We have a great group here returning and winning conference is definitely one of the primary goals. We have other goals that expand beyond those six matches we play in conference.”

The Blazers opened the season earlier in the week against Lake Park.

Fenton girls volleyball team has sights set high

How much potential does the Fenton girls volleyball team have?

“This is the best team Fenton has had in quite some time,” noted Bison coach Kelly Kleidorfer. “Last season we had the most wins of any Fenton team in the 2000s.”

Fenton is coming off a 2015 season where it won 13 matches. “However, we still are looking for that first conference win since the Metro Suburban Conference expanded,” said Kleidorfer. “We have come close the past two years and certainly feel that this is the season we experience success in conference play.”

Fenton also had a winning record in two of the four tournaments it played in last year. “This season, we are looking to make that happen in all four tournaments,” Kleidorder added.

The Bison return the likes of seniors Paulina Milanowski (setter), Natalie Skop (outside hitter), Maggie Rusiecka (outside hitter) and Melinda Boehm (middle blocker), along with junior Isabella Wielga (defensive specialist) and sophomore Mackenzie Miller (setter).

“Our seniors have meant so much to the program becoming competitive again and our younger players are following the lead of the seniors and working each day to make sure

we have success,” said Kleidorfer.

“We ask the team a lot, ‘Are we going to be the hammer or the nail?’

After too many years of being the nail, we are working toward being the hammer this season.”

Milanowski, the team captain, had 374 assists and 135 digs last year.

Skop had 122 kills and 136 digs, while Rusiecka had 102 kills and 33 blocks. Boehm had 68 kills and 43 blocks. Wielga had 85 digs and Miller registered 37 assists.

“We have a core group of girls playing their third season on varsity who are using their experience to elevate everyone else on the team,” said Kleidorfer. “We also have the most depth we have ever had. No team wants any injuries, but we feel we have a solid contributor at each position.”

Key newcomers include sophomores Vicky Krzyszkowski (middle blocker), Ashley Lira (libero) and Agata Kukielko (outside hitter).

Rusiecka moved to outside hitter to replace all-conference player Emmy Burris. Krzyszkowski will play a middle position, while Milanowski and Skop have played together the last two seasons. “We are shaping up quite well offensively,” said Kleidorfer. “Maggie has had an outstanding preseason. When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Addison Trail High School, Addison Last year: Addison Trail 19, Glenbard South 14 Outlook: Addison Trail is looking to improve upon last year’s 4-5 mark. The Blazers welcome in a Glenbard South team that went 6-5 last year, advancing to the second round of the state playoffs after qualifying with a 5-4 record. Addison Trail plays its first three games at home this season with Oak Park-River Forest and District 88 neighbor Willowbrook to follow.

Week 1 Preview Willowbrook at Grayslake North

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Grayslake North High School, Grayslake Last year: Teams did not play Outlook: For years, Willowbrook started the season with a neighborhood game against Glenbard East. This year, the Warriors will head north to face former Fox Valley Conference member Grayslake North. The Knights are now members of the new Northern Lake County Conference. Grayslake North is coming off a 2015 season where it went 7-4 and made it to the second round of the state playoffs. Willowbrook went 5-4 last year and finished second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division.

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Leyden High School West Campus, Northlake Last year: Leyden 42, Fenton 7 Outlook: Fenton coach Mark Kos is no stranger to the Leyden program. Kos started coaching with Tom Cerasani Sr., at Schaumburg High School. Fenton’s side of the Metro Suburban Conference again will be filled with competitive teams. “Our conference is absolutely loaded,” said Kleidorfer. “Glenbard South is a highly ranked team each season, RiversideBrookfield is a very skilled team and has a 6-7 girl that gives everyone major problems. IC Catholic Prep is a downstate threat each season.

Wheaton Academy has been really good and we also add Illiana Christian to our division this year and they always are competitive.”

Week 1 Preview Bishop McNamara at IC Catholic Prep

When: Friday, 7:15 p.m.

Where: Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex, Elmhurst Last year: McNamara 49, IC Catholic Prep 32; McNamara 42, IC Catholic Prep 14 (state semifinals) Outlook: Well, this one ought to be interesting. A Week 1 highschool matchup doesn’t get much more exciting than this. The Knights will confront the team that knocked them out of the Class 3A state semifinals last year at home. Bishop McNamara went on the next week to win the Class 3A state title in convincing fashion (50-7). IC Catholic Prep returns plenty from last year’s team, including Northern Illinois University-bound running back Jordan Rowell and quarterback Luke Ricobene. These two teams also met in Week 1 last year in Kankakee where McNamara won 49-32.
