The juvenile has been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, a class 3 felony; one count of reckless conduct, a class 4 felony;

His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 22 in front of Judge Anderson. The case remains under investigation.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Bensenville Chief of Police Dan Schulze announced on Aug. 9 that a 14-year-old boy had been charged with shooting and killing a 13-year-old friend.

The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing this morning where Judge Robert Anderson ordered the juvenile be released to the custody of his parents on home detention.

On Aug. 8, Bensenville police officers were dispatched to a call of a person shot inside a residence. Once inside the residence, police officers and responding paramedics found a 13-year-old boy bleeding from the head.

The boy was later pronounced dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. An investigation into the matter revealed that the juvenile and three of his friends were handling various firearms left unlocked inside the residence of one of the other juveniles.

While handling the guns, the 14-year-old juvenile allegedly shot his friend in the head. After an investigation conducted by the Bensenville Police and the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT) the juvenile was taken into custody early Friday morning, Aug. 9, without incident.

“Yesterday afternoon (referring to Aug. 8), a 13-year-old boy from Bensenville tragically lost his life when one of his friends allegedly discharged a gun, shooting the boy in the head,” Berlin said. “This morning (referring to Aug. 9), the victim’s friend finds himself accused of discharging the weapon that killed his friend.

DGTT Foundation forced to cancel Freedom & Dignity Fest Event company files for bankruptcy days before event

Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation announced on Wednesday, Aug. 7 that Imagine Events (a/k/a Imagn Events), the company handling event arrangements and ticket sales for the first-ever Freedom & Dignity Festival, had filed for bankruptcy.

The Festival, which was to feature a benefit performance by Toby Keith, was scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Schaumburg Boomers baseball stadium.

Proceeds from the Festival were slated to benefit Café Liberty, a culinary education program for veterans and their families. Café Liberty was spearheaded by Gibbons, who also manages the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot held annually on Thanksgiving Day. The Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation regretfully informed ticketholders that the event had been canceled. For ticket-related refunds, ticketholders were advised to contact Mike Birt of Imagine Events, LLC, at (630) 414-6219. All ticketing questions should be directed to Imagn Events.

According to Gibbons, Imagn Events was to provide a country music festival that would benefit Café Liberty, a charitable arm of the Foundation, at a music venue. The Foundation licensed the use of its name and agreed that Café Liberty would be a charitable beneficiary of

the festival. The Schaumburg Boomers baseball organization, a supporter of veterans and their families, agreed to provide the venue for the music festival.

“Imagn Events represented to us that they had the experience to stage such an event and that it would be a turn-key operation, meaning Imagn Events was fully responsible for all facets of the event including all financial obligations,” Gibbons said. “We trusted their assurances that they could deliver a successful event.”

Imagn Events requested a loan from the DGTT for $248,750, documented by a written note that was due to be paid back by August 1, 2019. They defaulted on the note.

The DGTT Foundation wired $248,750 to Madison Entertainment

in Nashville on March 1, 2019 as an initial payment to secure the artists that would be performing at the music venue with Toby Keith as the headliner. Online ticket sales opened on April 19, 2019.

“Periodic conference calls assured us that everything was going according to plan,” said Gibbons.

“We trusted their assurances, as this was the first event of its kind for our foundation.”

When tickets sales were questioned, Imagn Events assured everyone they were “on pace” for an event of this type.

The Foundation was able to secure sponsors for two suites, one for $50,000, another for $15,000, for which the Foundation paid the full $65,000 in advance to Imagn Events, which they requested in order to pay

for expenses.

On a conference call that took place just five days before the event, Gibbons was told to give another $406,250 or the event would be canceled.

“This was not a part of our original contract, nor was the Foundation in a financial position to agree to their ultimatum of $406,250,” Gibbons said.

“When we looked at the … numbers … the Foundation determined that Imagn Events was not in a position to stage the concert.”

Contract terminated, tickets still sold On Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Foundation terminated the agreement with Imagn Events, but unfortunately, Imagn Events continued to sell tickets, Gibbons said.

“Over a 24-hour period, the Schaumburg Boomers and the Foundation worked tirelessly together to salvage the music festival, with each entity considering taking on or continuing to take significant losses to adjust matters,” he said. “The Foundation continued to believe in the event and the venue. However, the operational hurdles remaining and the limits facing the Foundation as a result of loans made to Imagn to allow the booking of the performers, prevented the Foundation from saving the event, despite our very best efforts and cooperation from the Boomers.”

“When Imagn Events failed to perform and told the Foundation that it was unable to perform, the Foundation realized not only its longstanding reputation was at issue but also that the circumstances posed risk to hard working people, law enforcement and ticketholders.

“The decision not to proceed was a difficult decision. The Foundation remained hopeful that the event would lead to a significant donation benefitting those it serves.”

For ticket-related refunds, contact Mike Birt of Imagn Events, LLC, at (630) 414-6219. As of Aug. 7, tickets had been sold via EventSprout amounting to $287,223. Other tickets were sold on Groupon, but those numbers are not yet known.

“We sincerely hope that all ticket holders are refunded but that is out of our control,” Gibbons said.

At present, all ticket revenue and funds remitted to Imagn Events have yet to be accounted for by them. At present, Gibbons said, the Foundation’s financial outlay and potential losses are in excess of $340,000.

County-wide crime task force formed Consolidation will replace two other crime agencies

On Wednesday, Aug. 7, law enforcement officials from throughout DuPage County, including State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, Sheriff James Mendrick and nearly two dozen local police chiefs, announced the formation of a new county-wide task force charged with leading investigations into serious crimes, critical incidents and other law enforcement endeavors.

The County’s new Metropolitan Emergency Response & Investigation Team (MERIT) is the brainchild of leadership of the DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force, the DuPage Felony Investigative Assistance Team and the DuPage County Association of Chiefs of Police who recognized the benefit of consolidating both task force entities into a single county-wide effort that will now include the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. The new task force will replace both the Major Crimes Task Force and the Felony Investigative Assistance Team.

Membership to MERIT is limited to law enforcement agencies in DuPage County.

Information about finances available online Illinois residents will soon have a clearer picture of the state’s finances thanks to athe efforts of State Sen. Tom Cullerton.

Signed into law Wednesday, Aug. 7, House Bill 313 requires the Illinois comptroller’s website to display the amounts and dates of expenditures by state agencies to vendors, the salaries of each state employee and graphical data whenever possible.

“Illinois taxpayers have a right to know how their money is spent,” Cullerton said. “While this online database provides residents with an excellent resource, this legislation will expand the scope of the website to create an even clearer picture of the state’s finances.”

The website currently shows all of the state financial records and reports, with the same up-to-date numbers and information that are used by the comptroller’s office in carrying out its constitutional duties, including employee salaries. Cullerton urges Illinois residents to visit illinoiscomptroller.gov/financial-data/ state-expenditures/employee-salary-database to inspect state revenues, expenses, contracts and salaries.

In addition to increasing transparency about individual employee salaries, the new law will also extend to information about private-sector firms that seek contracts from the state.

“Our goal is to ensure this comprehensive financial database gives taxpayers an up-to-date and reliable method to inspect state revenues and expenditures to improve fiscal transparency in our state,” Cullerton said.

The bipartisan legislation passed the General Assembly with unanimous support and goes into effect immediately.

Illinois political leaders from both parties on Aug. 8 said former Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich should remain in prison despite Republican U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement that he was considering commuting the sentence of the ex-governor.

Trump reportedly made his remarks on Air Force One Aug. 7, saying Blagojevich has “been in jail for seven years over a phone call where nothing happens.”

“I would think that there have been many politicians—I’m not one of them by the way—that have said a lot worse over the phone,” Trump said, according to Politico. “I thought he was treated unbelievably unfairly. … And a lot of people thought it was unfair, like a lot of other things—and it was the same gang, the [former FBI Director James] Comey gang and all these sleazebags that did it.”

Illinois House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, a Western Springs Republican, said Trump’s words were “politically driven” and “part of a theme” of the president aiming his actions at “certain groups in the United States who don’t believe in the federal government.”

“He specifically mentioned the former FBI director, and, you know, somehow blaming him for this overreach by the FBI and Department of Justice is just wrong for those of us who lived through this,” Durkin said.

Blagojevich began serving a 14year federal prison sentence in 2012.

He was convicted on 11 criminal counts related to his effort to sell the former U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama when he became president.

Blagojevich was also convicted on six counts related to campaign contribution shakedowns, including one count which said he essentially tried to trade $8 million in added state funding to pediatric specialists for a $25,000 campaign donation from a hospital CEO. In 2015, five of those counts were thrown out in appellate courts, although his 14-year sentence was reimposed months later.

Durkin said Trump’s comments attributing Blagojevich’s misdeeds to “a phone call where nothing happened” was a misrepresentation of the facts, and said talk of a commutation sends the wrong message to the American public.

“It just sends the message that if you become a folk hero within the eyes of the president, and the president wants to use this as an example of why he doesn’t like James Comey, it doesn’t seem to be what the founding fathers believed that the executive power should be about,” he said.

He said Blagojevich’s conviction “goes to the heart of the problems that we’ve experienced in state government

Speaking at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Aug. 8, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Blagojevich should serve his full sentence.

“I think President Trump has some pretty important things that he ought to be dealing with, not the least of which is the mindless killings over the last weekend, gun safety, I wish he’d focus on that. Governor Blagojevich should remain in prison,” Pritzker said.

Both Pritzker and Trump have a history with the disgraced former governor.

During Pritzker’s successful 2018 gubernatorial campaign, audio tapes of Pritzker and Blagojevich surfaced in which the two men can be heard discussing who should be appointed to Obama’s vacated Senate seat. Those recordings were obtained by an FBI wiretap via the corruption investigation during Blagojevich’s governorship which led to his eventual convictions. They were later published by the Chicago Tribune.

Pritzker was never charged with any wrongdoing by the FBI and the phone recording did not implicate him in any of Blagojevich’s crimes. The Blagojevich tapes did, however, force Pritzker to apologize for comments he made about former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, calling the African American leader too “crass” for an appointment to the vacant U.S. Senate seat.

Higher education officials say guardianship scam is not widespread problem

Officials from several public universities in Illinois told a panel of state lawmakers Aug. 8 they do not believe there is widespread abuse of court-ordered guardianships that have enabled some students from wealthy backgrounds to obtain need-based student financial aid.

“We don’t believe that this is a wide national scandal,” Andy Borst, director of undergraduate admissions at the University of Illinois, said during a special hearing in Chicago. “We saw something happening that we felt wasn’t right and we wanted to bring it to light as much as possible and correct it.”

Borst said he first became aware of the practice in May 2018 when he received a call from a high school guidance counselor asking why a particular student was being offered a university-funded scholarship that is normally reserved for students with significant financial needs.

After further review, he said, officials determined the student’s parents were still providing financial support, and the student’s financial aid package was adjusted. He said the university also forwarded the information to the U.S. Department of Education’s inspector general as well as the Illinois attorney general’s office.

At the time, Borst said, university officials thought it was an isolated in-

But in the fall of 2018, he said, he received another call from a different high school counselor describing a similar situation involving another student. That prompted a review of all students at the university who had indicated on their financial aid application forms that they were in a guardianship arrangement.

“This led to the discovery of a number of other instances of this ethically questionable maneuver,” Borst said.

Since then, Borst said, the University of Illinois has put a number of procedures in place to prevent similar abuses, and it has referred additional cases to the U.S. Department of Education and the state attorney general for further investigation.

But Michelle Trame, director of student financial aid at the university, said her office has the ability to adjust only financial aid awards that come directly from the university, and it has no authority to adjust federal aid such as Pell grants or state-based aid like the Monetary Award Program, or MAP grants, all of which are determined based on information provided in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA form.

“Again, we want to be clear that this practice appears to be legal, and we have no authority to deny these students MAP or federal aid to which they are eligible according to their FAFSA and the formula set by their funding agency,” Trame said.

The problems at the University of Illinois became public when ProPublica Illinois, a nonprofit investigative news organization, published a story July 29 suggesting there may have been as many as 40 such cases, mainly from upscale communities in the north Chicago suburbs of Lake County.

By placing their teenage children in the custody of a guardian, the students were legally able to declare themselves financially independent from their parents, thereby qualifying for need-based financial aid.

But while the practice appears to have happened several times at the University of Illinois, officials from other universities said they have seen no indication of it happening at their schools.

“I can tell you that I have seen no indication of families having intentionally changed legal guardianship for financial aid purposes,” said Terri Hare, financial aid director at Western Illinois University.

Officials at Southern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Eastern Illinois University and Northeastern Illinois University all said substantially the same thing.

Lawmakers, meanwhile, appeared unsure about how to prevent such abuses from happening in the future.

While some suggested imposing tighter controls on financial aid applications, others suggested the problem might be the skyrocketing cost of higher education.

“A system that drives families to cheat is a broken system,” said Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, chair of the House Higher Education Committee.

The concern for many lawmakers is that by tightening rules on financial aid or guardianship could end up hurting those children who need those services the most.

Borst and Michelle Trame, director of student financial aid at the University of Illinois, offered three recommendations they said would make it easier for school officials to catch potentially fraudulent financial aid applications.

Those included re-evaluating the

state’s guardianship laws; giving school financial aid officials more authority to adjust financial aid packages downward, based on reasonable information they have that might not be reflected in their FAFSA form; licensing and regulating independent education consultants who advise students on how to maximize their financial aid awards; and investing more of the state’s education budget hiring high school guidance counselors.

Rep. Dan Brady, R-Bloomington, the Republican spokesperson on the higher education budget committee, said he believes the problem is rooted in something that state government might have little ability to influence.

“I think we find ourselves in uncharted waters here,” Brady said, “and I don’t know, as well-intended as all of us are on this committee, … how we get to a point where we legislate moral and ethical behavior.”

Military vehicle ‘convoy’ to stop at Cantigny The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park is planning a warm welcome for more than 50 historic military vehicles and their owners on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Their visit is part of a two-day stop in DuPage County during the 2019 Transcontinental Motor Convoy, sponsored by the Military Vehicle Preservation Association (MVPA).

The convoy—beginning Aug. 11 in Washington, D.C., and ending in San Francisco on Sept. 14—commemorates the 100th anniversary of the U.S.

Army’s first motor convoy across the United States in 1919, along the famed Lincoln Highway.

“We began a partnership with MVPA back in 2009 when the 90th anniversary convoy stopped here on its way to California,” said Ian Richardson, historic vehicles program director for the First Division Museum. “They were so impressed with how we treated them that this time around, a decade later, they’re making a multi-day stop in Wheaton, specifically to enjoy the museum and the park. The MVPA has

been good to the museum, contributing to the success of our own historic vehicle fleet.”

The restored vehicles will be staged at Cantigny Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 20. Visitors are invited to come see them and interact with their owners, most of whom are veterans and collect military vehicles as a hobby.

As MVPA members, they enjoy educating the public on the importance of the vehicles during their time in national service.

One of the vehicles on exhibit will be the First Division Museum’s own World War I “Liberty Truck,” which joined the museum’s fleet in 2018 following a lengthy restoration process.

The truck is not in the convoy, but it does run—one of the few models of its kind that still function.

“The convoy participants are eager to tour the museum and I know a few are especially excited to see the Liberty Truck,” Richardson said.

Members of MVPA conduct convoys of various lengths throughout the

year. Transcontinental convoys are uncommon and require many local support teams along the 3,200-mile route.

Cantigny is pitching in by donating fuel for each historic vehicle and meals for the owners and their families.

The convoy riders will camp at the DuPage County Fairgrounds for two nights. Those who want to see the vehicles but are unable to visit Cantigny can stop by the fairgrounds on Wednesday, Aug. 21, a convoy rest day. The vehicles resume their cross-country journey at 7 a.m. on Aug. 22.

New Gaming Board chairman vows credibility, integrity

The new chairman of the Illinois Gaming Board said Thursday he has no illusions about how tough of a job lies ahead.

“We all know that those tasks are substantial. In ordinary times our work would be challenging, but these are not ordinary times,” Schmadeke said as he opened his first meeting as head of the state’s gambling regulatory agency.

Earlier this year, the General Assembly passed the largest expansion of legal gambling in state history. It authorized the construction of up to six new casinos in the state, including one in Chicago, as well as legalized sports betting.

Revenue from those activities is earmarked for a massive, $45 billion capital improvements program,

branded as “Rebuild Illinois.”

But Schmadeke said it will be successful only if the new, expanded gambling industry in Illinois has public trust and confidence.

“Maintaining that confidence must undergird everything we do,” Schmadeke said. “Achieving and preserving the integrity of the gaming industry in Illinois will be at the heart of my tenure on this board, and based upon what I know I believe that also applies to the board as a whole and to the staff. We will undertake our responsibility as effectively and as efficiently as possible, but we will not compromise on issues of integrity.”

Gov. J.B. Pritzker named Schmadeke to head the gaming board July 29. He was partner-in-charge at the Springfield office of the law firm Hinshaw & Culbertson, LLP. Before joining that firm in 2003, he held a number of positions in state government, including general counsel to the Illinois state comptroller and chief of the General Law Bureau in

the Illinois attorney general’s office.

Pritzker also named Anthony Garcia, an attorney for Boeing Co., to serve as a member of the board.

The Gaming Board is a five-member body appointed by the governor, subject to Senate confirmation. It has general authority to implement the state’s gaming laws, including the granting and revocation of gaming licenses, approving the sale or transfer of gaming establishments, and enacting regulations that govern the industry.

In his remarks to the board, Schmadeke said the expansion of legal gambling is intended to serve three purposes—“assisting economic development, promoting Illinois tourism and increasing state and local government revenue.”

“The governor and General Assembly have recognized, however, that these goals only can be achieved if the public has confidence and trust in the credibility and integrity of the gaming operations in this state,” he said.

A memorable season as a swimmer and a coach Willowbrook graduate enjoyed a busy summer before heading to Purdue University

Elissa Haake completed her Lombard Waves swimming career by piling up victories in the recent DuPage Swim and Dive Conference Red Division “A” Meet.

Haake, who swam with the Waves for seven seasons, won two individual events and swam on two winning relay teams in the 15-18 girls division at the July 27 meet. She helped Lombard win the championship in the four-team meet. The Waves accumulated 817 team points at the meet. Roselle finished second with 779 points.

In addition to swimming with the Waves in 2019, Haake spent the season as one of the program’s assistant coaches.

“I forgot how much I love swimming,” said Haake in reflecting on her first season as a coach. “You can get caught up with times and cuts and the results on the scoreboard. The younger kids do it because they love it. This year made me remember that swimming is supposed to be fun.”

In recent years, Haake and Lombard head coach Pam Forsberg discussed the possibility of a future coaching opportunity. This spring, Forsberg informed Haake that a position was available during the Waves’ 2019 season.

Haake interviewed for the position and was offered the job.

“I was just so excited,” said Haake, who graduated from Willowbrook High School in May. “It was a crazy summer. There were some really hard days, but I loved every second of

it.”

Haake, who recently departed for Purdue University, where she will be a member of the women’s swim team, would typically be in the pool by 4:30 a.m. this summer. She practiced with her club team—Hinsdale Swim Club— from 4:30 to 7 a.m. before heading to Paradise Bay Water Park for the Waves’ 7:30 a.m. practice.

In addition to swimming for and coaching with the Waves this summer, Haake taught swim lessons at Lombard’s Paradise Bay Water Park. Her hectic summer days also typically included cross training and an evening workout with her swim club.

“I was able to relate my personal swimming experiences with them,” said Haake of coaching some of the Waves’ younger swimmers this season.

Some of Haake’s most rewarding summer moments came when a young Wave made a personal improvement or swam his or her best race of the season.

“Just seeing some of their faces was so much fun,” she said. Haake recalled one first-year swimmer who wasn’t sure if he could complete his race. Cheered on by his teammates and coaches, the boy made it to the end of the pool to achieve his goal.

“He finished the race; that was all he wanted,” recalled Haake. “Coach Pam said, ‘You did it.’ He had the widest smile. It was the sweetest thing.”

Haake said several Lombard swimmers closed out the season with their best swims of the summer. Those performances helped the Waves win the Red Division. The victory propelled the team into the conference’s White Division in 2020.

“I really enjoyed seeing some of the incredi-

ble swims we had at the conference meet,” said Haake in referring to the recent Red Division “A” Meet in Roselle. “We had a ton of incredible swims. It was an awesome ending to the season.”

Swimming in the 15-18 girls division at the July 27 meet in Roselle, Haake won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events by decisive margins. She completed the 50-yard race over four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Her finishing time in the 100-yard race was more than nine seconds faster than the runner-up.

Haake swam the freestyle leg on the Waves’ victory in the 15-18 girls level’s 200-yard medley relay. In her last swim as a Wave, she anchored a first-place performance in the 15-18 girls division’s 200-yard freestyle relay.

Haake enjoyed a standout high school swimming career with the Addison Trail/Willowbrook co-op team. She competed in four consecutive IHSA state meets. As a sophomore, she earned a pair of top-10 finishes (in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events) at the state meet. In November, Haake closed out her high school career with a 10th-place finish in the state meet’s 200-yard freestyle race.

Haake’s success with the Addison Trail/Willowbrook team also included record-breaking efforts in the West Suburban Gold Conference Meet. As a junior, she set the conference meet record in the 100-yard freestyle. As a senior, she set a new conference meet record in the 200-yard freestyle.

“I am so excited to experience the next level,” said Haake, who will take part in her first practice with the Purdue team right after arriving at the school next week.

“I am such a learner,” said Haake, a self-described “math girl” who will major in actuarial science at Purdue. “I love learning new things.”

Addison Trail football team looking to take next step Coach Parpet Jr. likes the makeup of his 2019 roster

Addison Trail football coach Paul Parpet Jr. said success for his team will come down to making a play when one is needed to be made.

And Parpet Jr. feels he has those playmakers on a 2019 roster that looks to improve upon last year’s 1-8 record.

Parpet Jr. likes the abilities of returners such as AJ Carlson and Sal Napoli. “AJ is going to be a playmaker for us,” he said. “And Sal Napoli, if you look up football player in the dictionary, his picture is sitting right there. He’ll be a tight end/Hback for us on offense. This kid is a football player and knows everything that is going on all the time. We call him Coach Sal. If you tell him to run through a brick wall, he’s going to run through a brick wall.”

Parpet Jr. added Damarius Conrad is another key cog for the Blazers, along with junior Anthony Valenti.

“Anthony most likely will be our quarterback. He has the skill and he has the tools,” the coach said.

Senior Jacub Trippiedi is back

after being sidelined by illness last season. He will play wide receiver and could see time in the secondary.

“Jacub is the kind of kid who does exactly what he is supposed to do all the time,” said Parpet Jr. Gonzalo Reyes also will help the Blazers at wide receiver. “He’s another kid who you show him how to do something one time and he does it,” said Parpet Jr. Nick Skamra and Xavier Sierra give the Blazers experience back on the offensive line. “Nick and Xavier are big wrestlers,” said Parpet Jr. “They weren’t around a lot in the summer because they were doing wrestling stuff. They are like Sal. They are football players.”

Tom Housley, who played on the varsity as a sophomore last year, will help on the defensive line at defensive end. “Tom has a football body,” said Parpet Jr. “He is going to be huge for us.”

Junior Eric Reed will team up with Napoli at inside linebacker and could see time in the backfield at tailback.

“Eric is a tough-nosed kid,” said Parpet Jr. Senior Jon Chambers will be a presence on the defensive line and perhaps as an outside linebacker,

Parpet Jr. noted. Decorated wrestler Jake Matthews, who had a full summer wrestling schedule, will add to the talent on both offense and defense.

“In terms of depth, I think we will have a handful of guys playing on both sides of the ball,” said Parpet Jr. “It will be an old-school mentality. Addison Trail football was built on kids playing both ways and never coming off the field. Tough kids who never come off the field. We have to play our guys who give us the best chance to win.”

Parpet Jr. said his group is more than prepared to jump into the start of this week’s fall practices.

“We had a fun summer because the kids worked hard and we have a bunch of good kids,” he said.

But Parpet Jr. cautioned his squad now has to execute on its potential.

“Everybody at this time of the year says they are good on paper,” he said.

“Now, it’s a matter of putting the puzzle pieces together to be successful on Friday night. We’re looking forward to doing just that.”

Parpet Jr. said coming out of the gates strong in Week 1 against Conant at home will be critical.

“This is my 26th year at Addison

Trail and when we win the Week 1 game, nine times out of 10 we’ve qualified for the playoffs,” he said.

Parpet Jr. said the team’s first goal always is to win the West Suburban Conference Gold Division title. “I want to win the conference championship more than anybody else, but we know Willowbrook is loaded again,” he said. “Our No. 1 goal

always is to win the West Suburban Gold. We will not lose sight of that, but our No. 2 goal is to make the playoffs. If we qualify for the playoffs this season, it will be a very successful season. Our kids will be ready. We’ve gone back to the oldschool mentality here. The kids are conditioned and in great shape. We’ll see what happens.”

Willowbrook’s Silver and Blue Community Night set for Aug. 23 School’s fall athletic teams will be introduced

Willowbrook High School will hold its fourth annual Silver and Blue Community Night on Friday, Aug. 23, in the school’s football stadium.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. Activities will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Addison Trail football team looks to start hot out of the gates Blazers open against Conant on Aug. 30

In an interview that appeared in last week’s Addison Independent, Addison Trail football coach Paul Parpet Jr. said a key to his team’s season will be its performance in the early part of the schedule.

Parpet Jr. said he likes the way the first three weeks of the sched-

ule shape up with games against Conant, Downers Grove North and Proviso East. A senior-dominated Conant team went 7-3 last season, while Downers North went 4-5 and Proviso East went 2-7. Conant defeated Addison Trail only 7-0 a year ago.

Addison Trail kicks things off Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at home against Conant. The Blazers then hit the road for the next two weeks with a Friday, Sept. 6 contest (7:30 p.m. start) against Downers North and a

Friday, Sept. 13 game in Maywood up the regular season with a home games this season and will face four (7:30 p.m. start) against Proviso contest against Morton on Friday, teams that made the 2018 playoffs.

Willowbrook football team to open season against Providence Catholic Warriors to play five home games in 2019

The Willowbrook football team will kick off the 2019 season with a bang.

New on the schedule is a non-conference Week 1 tilt against Providence Catholic High School out of New Lenox. That contest takes place Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Willowbrook.

Providence, which now plays in the CCL/ESCC Green conference, went 5-5 and made the playoffs a year ago.

Willowbrook, of course, won the West Suburban Conference Gold Division, and finished with an 11-1 mark, reaching the quarterfinals of the state playoffs for a third consecutive year. Willowbrook is 29-7 over the last three seasons.

The Warriors then start a twoyear WSC crossover series with Oak Park-River Forest. Willowbrook heads to Oak Park on Friday, Sept. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Willowbrook, under the direction of coach Nick Hildreth, played five teams on its 2018 schedule that made the playoffs a year ago, but only two during the regular season. The addition of Providence and the swapping out of Hinsdale Central for Oak Park-River Forest (both made the playoffs last year) puts that number at three on the 2019 schedule.
