White extends expiration dates for licenses, ID cards

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses and ID cards have been extended an additional five months—from Aug. 1, 2021, to Jan. 1, 2022. The new Jan. 1, 2022, extension also includes expiration dates that will occur between July and December of this year.

As a result, expired driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain valid until Jan. 1, 2022 so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities, especially during hot weather. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

“Extending expiration dates until Jan. 1, 2022, means people with an expired driver’s license or ID card do not need to rush into a Driver Services facility immediately,” said White. “During hot weather, I would suggest residents consider delaying visits to Driver Services facilities. But if you must visit a facility, please come prepared to wait outside due to continued social distancing efforts, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time. We are allowing more people in the facilities at one time due to relaxed protocols.”

White noted that Senate Bill 2232, which Gov. Pritzker signed into law Friday and had passed the House and Senate by overwhelming margins, authorizes the Secretary of State’s office to extend driver’s license and ID card expiration dates to Jan. 1, 2022. Senate Bill 2232 was sponsored by state Sen. Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) and state Rep. Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg).

White’s office continues to review ways to further expand online renewals for expired driver’s licenses and ID cards to reduce the volume.

The Illinois economy showed strong signs of recovery during the first quarter of 2021 as businesses continued to reopen from the pandemic and direct government payments flowed to businesses and individual consumers.

Data released from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed the state’s economy grew at an annual rate of 6.4 percent during the quarter as its gross domestic product—the market value of all goods and services produced by labor and property—approached its pre-pandemic level.

That growth rate was on par with the rest of the nation and slightly ahead of the pace set by most of Illinois’ surrounding states. But the state’s total GDP, at just under $770 billion annually, remained below where it was two years earlier, before the pandemic.

BEA noted that government assistance payments, including direct economic impact payments, expanded unemployment benefits and Paycheck Protection Program loans all flowed to households and businesses during the quarter through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, passed in December, and the American Rescue Plan Act, which passed in March.

But the agency also noted that the full impact of the pandemic could not be quantified in the state GDP numbers because the impacts were generally embedded within the data and could not be separately identified.

“I think that is substantially stimulus, which means borrowing money from China and throwing it into the Illinois economy,” Illinois Chamber of Commerce President Todd Maisch said during an interview.

“But there’s no substitute for basic demand in the economy. So as much as (President Joe) Biden wants to spend more and more trillions of dollars, there’s no substitute for basic demand in the economy. And we’re still lacking that; there’s no doubt about it.”

The most improved sectors of the Illinois economy were also among the hardest-hit by the pandemic— arts, entertainment and recreation, which grew at a 38.6 percent annual rate, followed by accommodation and food services, which grew at an 18.4 percent pace.

Durable goods manufacturing also showed strong improvement with a 13 percent growth rate, as did the information sector, which includes the media, which grew at a 14 percent rate.

After 36 months of construction, it took four hours to transfer 101 patients by ambulance from the original 85-year-old Elmhurst Hospital on Berteau Avenue into private suites at the new 866,000-square-foot, 259bed Elmhurst Hospital at 155 E.

County reports 80 percent of residents have received at least one dose of vaccine According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccination data, 80 percent of eligible residents 12 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 63 percent are fully vaccinated. Additionally, 98 percent of DuPage County residents ages 65 years and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and 81 percent are fully vaccinated. Most importantly, there has been a notable decline in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths throughout the county.

On April 30, DuPage County officials announced a goal to have 80 percent of eligible residents fully vaccinated by July 1 to protect the health and well-being of all residents.

Since the announcement of this goal, more than 298,000 vaccine doses have been administered to residents, and another 200,000 DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against this deadly virus.

“DuPage County set an ambitious goal and continues to lead the state in vaccination rates with 80 percent of our eligible population having received their first dose,” said DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin. “We

What is the delta variant and should we be worried?

As summer 2021 begins, COVID-19 infection rates are at an all-time low.

In the United States, with 92% of seniors over 65 having received at least one COVID-19 vaccine, the most vulnerable are protected. With nearly half of the population fully vaccinated, there are fewer individuals that can get infected, fewer that are at risk for severe infection, and fewer that can spread it to others.

Yet there is still fertile ground for the spread of more resistant SARSCoV-2 variants in those individuals not yet vaccinated, especially in communities with low vaccination rates.

What are the variants of concern that are now circulating in the U.S. and in Illinois?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently re-named the SARSCoV2 variants of concern: alpha, beta, gamma, epsilon and delta.

The B.117 (alpha) variant is more transmissible than previous variants, but antibodies from vaccination can neutralize it nearly as well as the original strain. The alpha variant became the predominant variant in the United Kingdom during the fall of 202021. Predictions that the alpha variant would become predominant in the U.S. held true, rising from less than 1% of cases in January to 69.5% of cases by the end of May 2021.

The B.1.351 (beta) variant predominant in South Africa, and the P1 (gamma) variant predominant in South America, are also more transmissible, but they carry more worrisome mutations that result in decreased antibody neutralization of the virus.

While antibodies from patients who recovered from COVID-19 do not neutralize the alpha or gamma variants, antibodies from patients who were vaccinated with a Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine do neutralize the virus. This is because vaccination elicits antibody levels several fold higher than after natural infection.

The gamma variant increased to 8% of cases nationally and 24% in Illinois by the end of May 2021, while the beta variant was 0.7% nationally and 1.3% in Illinois. The gamma variant is also resistant to the monoclonal antibodies bamlanivimab+etesevimab but

still susceptible to casirivimab+imdevimab.

What do we know about the delta variant?

The WHO has noted the delta variant, which was first identified in India, is now spreading in more than 60 countries, including the U.S. The B.1.6172 (delta) variant was estimated by Public Health England to be 60% more transmissible than the alpha variant, which was 50% more transmissible than the original virus.

Patients infected with the delta variant have higher levels of virus detected in the airways than the alpha variant.

Like the gamma variant, it is more resistant to neutralization by antibodies. The delta variant was responsible for many of the cases in India during spring 2021.

In the United Kingdom, over three quarters of the adult population has received at least on dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and as a result, cases and deaths plummeted from a high of 60,000 cases a day in January to 2,000 a day by May 7. At the end of May 2021, cases began to rise again to 7,000 a day, by June 7, with 90% due to the delta variant. Hospitalizations have also increased. An early analysis suggests the likelihood of hospitalization in patients infected with the delta variant is twice that compared to those infected with the alpha variant.

Should we be worried about the delta variant?

Fully vaccinated people are less likely to get infected and unlikely to get severe infection. While the delta variant is more contagious and causes more severe illness, the two-dose COVID-19 vaccines can effectively neutralize it.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 88% effective against the strain after the second dose, but just 33 percent effective after one dose. The Moderna vaccine would likely provide similar protection. While the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) one-dose vaccine has not been studied against the strain, it is likely to provide significant protection.

Vaccination is effective in decreasing the chances of getting infected, become severely ill or symptomatic if infected, and in passing the virus to someone else. Vaccination is the best way to stop the spread of variants.

“That extra payment that you get from unemployment, it really does impact people’s behavior and their willingness to get back in the workforce,” he said.

Maisch also pointed to lingering concerns among many about the safety of returning to the workplace as well as structural issues in the economy such as the inability of many people in the workforce to find affordable child care.

Speaking at an unrelated event in Decatur, however, Gov. JB Pritzker disputed the idea that enhanced unemployment benefits are incentivizing people not to go back to work.

“I think it is a Republican rightwing talking point that says that people are just choosing to be lazy, to stay home, to get the extra few hundred dollars while they can,” Pritzker said.

Pritzker was speaking in Decatur to announce new policies aimed at making child care more affordable for working families so more of them will be able to return to work. That includes reducing the out-of-pocket cost of child care for those who qualify for state subsidies as well as increasing the reimbursement rate the state pays child care providers.

“We’re ensuring quality child care is accessible for more people, allowing more people to return to work without worrying about where their kids will go during the day and helping Illinois’ child care network rebuild after the last 16 months of our COVID-19 crisis,” Pritzker said.

My work to end the youth vaping epidemic

By U.S. Rep Raja Krishnamoorthi In continuing with my investigation into the youth vaping epidemic, I chaired a hearing recently with the Acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. Janet Woodcock, to determine the future of e-cigarettes in the U.S. market.

In the United States, 20 percent of high schoolers vape. These children are becoming addicted to vaping at an age when they are most susceptible to nicotine harming their neurological development.

Dr. Woodcock reiterated the findings from my investigation that flavored e-cigarettes attract children and that JUUL has played a large part in driving this epidemic and public health crisis. During the hearing, I showed internal documents from JUUL indicating that it was aware that its product’s nicotine levels were higher than others in the market and that kids were unknowingly becoming addicted to it.

As we uncovered during the hearing, the FDA’s partial flavor ban for e-cigarettes caused a migration from the company’s fruitier flavors to menthol, due to the menthol flavor exception. As Dr. Woodcock noted during our hearing, this is especially concerning because menthol has unique properties that contribute to heightened nicotine addiction. The FDA’s 2020 ban also caused kids to migrate to disposable cigarettes, which was possible under an exception to their partial flavor ban.

Federal regulators must act swiftly in the best interest of public health with regards to the youth vaping epidemic. The FDA is currently reviewing Premarket Tobacco Product Applications from e-cigarettes manufacturers to determine what products will be allowed on the market. I hope that the FDA considers the impact that these e-cigarette companies are having on the youth vaping epidemic and the health of an entire generation.

Celebration of Juneteenth at the DuSable Museum We were all witnesses to history this year when Juneteenth became a federal holiday, and I was proud to have voted for legislation to recognize this historic anniversary. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the day in 1865 on which General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and freed all those in the area still held in slavery.

Juneteenth is about reflecting on our history of racial discrimination and the progress we’ve made, while also recognizing the challenges we still face today. I was grateful for the opportunity to attend the reopening of the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago on June 19.

Glowiak Hilton commends Illinois’ first bond upgrade in 20 years Moody’s Investor Services has upgraded Illinois’ General Obligation bond rating for the first time in more than 20 years, and State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) is crediting the General Assembly’s work to get the state to this point.

“Moody’s upgrade indicates our state is making responsible budgetary decisions—it should give Illinois taxpayers a sense of relief,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By enacting balanced budgets and prioritizing fiscal stability in recent years, we’ve put Illinois on a path to a brighter future.”

Moody’s Investors Services, one of the nation’s primary credit rating agencies, recently upgraded Illinois’ General Obligation bonds a step closer

to the top rating. The upgrade signals a more stable outlook for Illinois’ economy, meaning state borrowing will cost less, which will in turn save taxpayers money.

The analysis highlighted the Fiscal Year 2022 budget for the upgrade.

Moody’s stated increased pension contributions, repayment of emergency Federal Reserve borrowings, and constrained use of federal aid from the American Rescue Plan Act are to thank for the increased rating.

This is the second positive rating action for Illinois in a week, following an outlook improvement from Fitch.

Words to live by, part 2 — compassion

Merriam-Webster defines compassion as, “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.”

Previously, I’ve postulated an idea related to the vastness of life’s purpose — an idea so wide-reaching it can be summed up in seven words. Can a mere seven words help us establish a focus on the meaning of life? Perhaps.

In fact, I’m willing to bet on it.

Because I’ve come to believe that life is much more simple than it is complicated.

Seven words might actually be superfluous. We could probably do with less. But let’s stick with them anyway; seven is a nice round number.

The first word (the subject of last week’s column) was kindness. This week, I focus on compassion — the act of understanding and identifying with the sorrows of other people, while at the same time wanting to ease them. It’s a desire to help those who are suffering. It’s needing to help someone who needs help.

The world today could benefit from more compassion.

We live in a me-focused society.

What do I have? What more do I want? Why am I happy or (more importantly) unhappy? What more can the universe deliver to me?

If not the universe, how about Amazon?

It’s too often all about me, instead of you or them or, more importantly, we.

Our decidedly inward focus causes us to tune out the needs of others.

Elmhurst Garden Club’s annual Walk & Faire returns Sunday Tickets available online only through July 10

As a consequence of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the Elmhurst Garden Club (EGC), like many organizations, found it necessary to cancel the 25th Annual Garden Walk & Faire scheduled for July 2020.

Thus, the 25th annual “Afternoon in the Garden” celebration had to be held over for another year.

Spirito to sing at Carnegie Hall NYC tour, electives highlight upcoming season Spirito Singers has announced that its 2021-22 Season will include innovative electives as well as a tour of Carnegie Hall in New York City for the Bravura Ensemble.

Rehearsals for the Ragazze Ensemble, a training ensemble comprised of 5th-8th grade treble singers, will include weekly elective classes designed to strengthen singers’ musicianship.

Singers begin with multi-level theory training and will continue with new offerings in vocal technique, composition, songwriting, conducting and more. Singers have the choice of Monday or Tuesday night rehearsals.

There are changes for the high school-age Bravura Ensemble as well.

In addition to participating in an elite choral ensemble, the Bravura singers will develop their musicianship skills through elective classes which will be held on Sunday afternoons after the choral rehearsal. Singers’ elective options will include solo vocal technique, composition, audition bootcamp, conducting, songwriting and theory refresher. Bravura singers can also participate in an a cappella ensemble.

After a COVID-driven hiatus, the Bravura Ensemble will head back out on tour next June. The ensemble is going to New York City to perform as part of the National Treble Chorus at Carnegie Hall. Bravura was invited to be part of this prestigious chorus after the concert’s organizers heard recordings of the ensemble. The National Treble Chorus will be comprised of top high school and collegiate treble ensembles from across the country.

The tour won’t be all-work-and-noplay. While in New York, Bravura will go to a Broadway show, visit museums and other sites, and finish with a celebration and post-concert party in Times Square.

Spirito Singers is a chorale for 5th – 12th grade treble singers with convenient rehearsal sites in Elmhurst and Oak Brook. Auditions are being scheduled now for the 2021-22 season. For information on Spirito or to schedule an audition please go to www.spiritosingers.org.

Faire, featuring five gloriously blooming private gardens, will be held on Sunday, July 11 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

In order to provide a safe environment for all those involved in and attending the Garden Walk and Faire several modifications and changes were initiated and all CDC guidelines for safety, social distancing and masking will be recognized.

A total of 500 timed entry tickets to tour the gardens will be available online only. Tickets are $18 from May 1 to midnight July 10. On the day of the Walk any available tickets will be $23 online only. NO tickets will be sold in local stores or in Wilder Park.

The Boutique Faire in Wilder Park, featuring garden plants, accessories, horticultural experts and more, is free and open from 10 a.m4 p.m.

One of the community gardens on this year’s Walk is the Darrell L. Whistler Memorial Prairie Garden at the Community Bank of Elmhurst, next to the cupola from the former hospital building.

“It’s a sweet little garden and nice tribute to Darrell,” said Club member Susan McCoyd.

At the Boutique Faire, measures will be taken to assure adequate

room for vendors’ displays and ample space to allow visitors to move about safely.

The EGC is very grateful to the Elmhurst Park District for their partnership and assistance in facilitating the operation of the Boutique Faire since 1995.

Proceeds from previous EGC Garden Walk events have gone to fully support scholarships to Illinois college and university students studying horticulture, landscape architecture, botany and environmental studies; to York Community High School students for experimental science programs; and to Elmhurst Park District summer camps. Since 1999, proceeds from the EGC Garden Walk have funded a total of $179,000 in scholarships.

Proceeds also benefit many community projects including but not limited to maintaining the Herb Garden in Wilder Park, mentoring York High School Garden Club; improving and maintaining the campus appearance at Ray Graham Learning Center; holiday decorating of the Elmhurst Public Library and contributing to Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition for public environmental programs.

Following the cancellation of the 2020 Walk many generous friends and benefactors stepped forward with contributions to EGC

Scholarship Fund allowing the club who responded to the request for to continue another year offering scholarship financial support.

The report indicates that 147 new businesses located in DuPage, representing $516 million invested, 405 jobs created or retained and 11.8M square-feet of new or improved space.

Brown, 25, of Island Lake, was charged with criminal trespass to a residence, criminal trespass to land after being given notice that entry is forbidden and disorderly conduct/ breach of peace in the 300 block of N. Princeton. Police said Brown was served with the charges on June 22.

June 13 Police said Kareem J. Thomas, 27, of Aurora, was arrested on an original complaint and warrant in the 1-100 block of E. Highland at 10:58 p.m.

College athletes can be paid for name and likeness in Illinois

Lawmakers, collegiate athletes and athletic directors from some of the state’s most prominent universities on June 29 hailed the governor’s

signing of a bill allowing college athletes to be paid for the use of their name and likeness as innovative and equity centric.

University of Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman called Gov.

JB Pritzker’s signing of Senate Bill 2338 into law “the most dramatic, meaningful change to come to the collegiate model since the adoption of athletic scholarships.”

port in the Illinois General Assembly, and Pritzker signed it at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s State Farm Center, accompanied by lawmakers including former college athletes House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, and Rep. Kambium Buckner, D-Chicago.

“We’re very proud to be able to host this very important and special day, not only in the history of college athletics here in our state, but in the history of college athletics across all of the states,” Whitman said. “And this is one of those days that allows us to begin to usher in the new era of college athletics.”

Athletic directors from Northwestern University and DePaul University were also present at the news conference.

The new law, which took effect July 1, allows Illinois college athletes to be paid for the use of their name, image or likeness, such as appearing at autograph signings at local businesses or appearing in advertising. It would also allow the athletes to hire an agent, but would not consider them employees of the schools they attend and would not allow them to be compensated for athletic performance.

Buckner, who played football at the University of Illinois, said the new law “is not just a win for the star quarterback or the star point guard.”

“This gives the women’s tennis player an opportunity to be compensated for teaching lessons back in her hometown during summer breaks,” he said. “This creates an apparatus for the women’s softball player to

lend her image to the local pizzeria for fair market value.”

Eva Rubin, a women’s basketball player at the U of I, said college athletes pour hours into their school work and sports careers, but there are other partnerships that the new law can help facilitate.

She pointed to her experience as a Type 1 diabetic and public outreach she has participated in for that cause.

“With my small platform that I’ve been able to kind of build for myself here at the University of Illinois, I’ve had many opportunities to work with diabetes research foundations, the American Diabetes Association, just organizations and causes like that that are important to me,” she said.

“So now with the (name, image and likeness law) being passed, I can only imagine the opportunities that I’ll be able to create for myself and build for myself in ways that that will help me give back to my community.”

Vederian Lowe, a lineman for U of I’s football team, said college athletes have “been dreaming of” the opportunity to reap financial benefits for the work they put into their sports. He called the bill a “historic change” for college athletics.

The new law will allow universities to prohibit a student from obtaining any sponsorships from wearing logos from certain brands during a competition. For example, if the university has a contract with Nike, it can prevent in-game Adidas sponsorships of individual athletes.

Moody’s upgrades Illinois’ credit rating

Illinois received its first credit rating upgrade in 23 years on June 29 when Moody’s Investors Services raised the state’s rating one notch, citing “material improvement in the state’s finances.”

Although the upgrade still leaves Illinois bonds rated just two notches above so-called “junk” status, Gov. JB Pritzker said it marked a turning point for the state, and he credited the General Assembly and members of his own administration for bringing greater fiscal discipline to the state’s budget.

“Make no mistake, despite all the challenges of the last year, after eight credit downgrades our state suffered under my predecessor, I say with full certainty Illinois’ fiscal condition is heading in the right direction for the first time in the 21st century,” Pritzker said during a Statehouse news conference.

In a statement, Moody’s said its decision was based in part on the recently passed budget, which increases pension contributions, repays last year’s emergency borrowing from the Federal Reserve and keeps the state’s bill backlog in check, with only “constrained use” of federal aid from the

American Rescue Plan Act. Moody’s also noted, however, that Illinois still faces significant longterm financial pressures, including its unfunded pension liabilities which the agency said “are routinely shortchanged under the state’s funding statute.”

“These liabilities could exert growing pressure as the impact of federal support dissipates, barring significant revenue increases or other fiscal changes,” Moody’s said.

“That is certainly something that we need to continue to work on,” Pritzker said. “As you know, from the beginning when I took office, we

put forward a variety of methods for us to begin to deal with that. One of those has been a pension buyout program that has been successful. And so we’re going to continue to work on that to make sure that we expand that and offer buyouts to everybody who is in the retirement system that may want one.”

Pritzker said the rating upgrade would save Illinois taxpayers “tens of millions of dollars” in interest costs paid on its debt, some of which he said taxpayers are already seeing in the form of rates paid on some of the state’s most recent notes.

“I think it’s worth pointing out that

the bond market trades typically ahead of credit rating agencies,” he said. “So our bonds actually were trading at a kind of higher level, as if the rating had already changed, because people were looking at what we were doing and, on their own, rating our bonds, the investors themselves.”

In addition to upgrading the state’s general obligation bonds, Moody’s also upgraded the state’s Build Illinois bonds—a program begun in 1985 to fund state and local infrastructure, economic development, education and environmental projects – as well as bonds issued by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority.

Thus far, neither the NCAA nor U.S. Congress have set nationwide rules governing college athlete compensation, although the Associated Press reported last week that the NCAA is working on temporary rules that could be in place by July.

“Obviously the college athletics landscape is changing, and I think that what we have proven here through this coalition is that we will always be willing and ready to be creative and to be a step ahead to lead the charge,” Buckner said. “We don’t know what everything will look like in the coming months and years, but I think what this signals is that we’re poised and ready to be at the vanguard and be at the front of the charge.”

Parade performers

Members of Willowbrook High School’s varsity dance team participated in Oakbrook Terrace’s Fourth of July parade on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors delivered several brief performances along the parade route. Pictured (left to right) at the end of the parade are: Sabrina Corso, Tabitha Bernardi, Coco Bernardi, Katie Corsini, Gianna Wiegel, Kelly Kramme, Gigi Giampaoli and Kira Gamble. Corso, Coco Bernardi and Corsini will soon begin their senior year at Willowbrook. Wiegel will start her junior year, while Tabitha Bernardi and Gamble will be sophomores. Kramme and Giampaoli are incoming freshmen.

The team’s new coaches—Claire Creighton, Emily Isaacson and Maddie Schulte—are all 2016 Willowbrook graduates who were members of the school’s varsity dance team.

Willowbrook’s dance team to hold its Kids Camp from July 12-16 The Willowbrook High School varsity dance team will hold its Kids Camp for children between the ages of 4 and 13 next week, during the week of July 12-16.

Each session of the five-day camp will run from 9 to 11 a.m. in the school’s main gymnasium. The camp’s final session of Friday, July 16, will feature a 10 a.m. showcase for family and friends.

The camp will include five days of dance activities and games. In addition to learning routines for the July 16 showcase, campers will learn the Willowbrook fight song routine.

All campers will receive a T-shirt.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all campers are required to wear a face covering to the dance camp.

The Willowbrook High School Athletic Booster Club held its annual Senior Athletic Celebration at the end of the 2020-21 school year. Several members of Willowbrook’s Class of 2021 received awards and scholarships during the May 24 event, which was held in the school’s main gymnasium. The honored students included Jack Walsh (left), who was a standout member of the school’s boys volleyball team.

Chris Leonard (right) presented Walsh with Destination Athlete’s Complete Athlete Award.

Leonard, who runs Destination Athlete’s local franchise in Lombard, noted during his presentation that Destination Athlete provides a multitude of items for youth athletics, including spirit wear, T-shirts, uniforms and equipment.

Leonard stated that because the organization serves the youth athletic community, it wants to give back to that community. To be considered for the Complete Athlete Award, students must be nominated by a coach, athletic director or guidance counselor. Leonard said that in thoroughly reviewing the nominations, Destination Athlete looks for students who show leadership in athletics, academics and in their community, and for those who demonstrate character in everything they do. Leonard said the award he presented to Walsh includes a small scholarship. Walsh will attend Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina. He will be a member of the school’s men’s volleyball team.

Man charged with shooting at police officers gets 25 years On Monday, June 28, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that a Bloomingdale man accused of shooting at two Bloomingdale police officers outside his home in 2018 was sentenced to 25 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).

Raymond Vieyra, 45, of Bloomingdale, entered a blind plea of guilty to three counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm at Peace Officer, a Class X Felony, in front of Judge John Kinsella who handed down the sentence. Vieyra was sentenced to 25 years on each of the counts, which will run concurrently. He has been held in custody at the DuPage County Jail on a bond of $3 million with 10% to apply since his arrest on October 21, 2018 and will receive credit for that time.

At approximately 4:36 a.m., Oct. 21,

2018, officers with the Bloomingdale Police Department were dispatched to Vieyra’s residence on Plymouth Lane for a report of domestic disturbance. The caller lived at the residence with Vieyra. Upon officers’ arrival, Vieyra exited the garage and began shooting at the officers. One of the officers returned fire. After shooting at the officers, Vieyra retreated back into the residence. A short time later, Vieyra exited the home with his hands up at which time he was arrested and taken into custody.

“This case serves as a reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers encounter each and every day,” Berlin said. “Thankfully, neither of the responding officers were injured during the incident.”

Vieyra will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
