Fenton school referendum voted down Low turnout may account for loss by 61% of vote
By Dee Longfellow FOR THE BENSENVILLE INDEPENDENT
Only 3,504 voters turned out on Tuesday, June 28 and that may be a big part of the reason the Fenton Community High School District 100 referendum failed to pass by a vote of 2,120 to 1,384. Despite numerous informational meetings and much communication with stakeholders on the various
issues and plans, pro and con, the turnout was low and the election was unsuccessful in supporting the referendum. The results may leave future plans at Fenton High School in question regarding improvements to the school’s structure and adding more student amenities. The effort was not for lack of trying. and the Fenton administration worked hard to get their message out about the necessity of the funds to upgrade Fenton. Informational meetings were held, extensive details were provided on the web site and Village of Bensenville’s multimedia communications department created a video that was available on the Bensenville public access channel as well as on youTube. Voting registration drives were held,
instructions were provided for mail-in voting and polling places were announced. It was noted that the school building, built in the 1950s, needs critical upgrades and that every year it is put off, the improvements become more and more costly. It was pointed out that important steps had been taken to control spending and to ensure as much money as
possible went into the classroom. Stakeholders were reminded that Fenton has the lowest bond and interest fund tax rate among high school districts in DuPage County and that the overall tax rate is lower than the state average. It remains to be seen whether or not the school district will try to add the referendum to the ballot for the General Election in November.
Dance Dayz postponed due to inclement weather Inaugural event at Rose Park rescheduled for Aug. 13
Since inclement weather forced the postponement of the Bensenville Park District’s first Dance Dayz Saturday, June 25, those looking to learn the latest dance moves or receive a small introduction into some basic dance styles will need to wait a little longer. Park district dance instructors will provide a crash
course in some basic dances set to tunes from a local disc jockey from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13. The event at Rose Park, David Drive and E. Belmont Ave. in Bensenville, is free and open to those of all ages. For more information about this and more park district events, visit BvilleParks.org.
