Sheriff: Woman kills sons, sets home ablaze, commits suicide

On Friday, July 12 at about 9:30 p.m., Elmhurst firefighters responded to the 3N300 block of Willow Rd. on the report of a house fire that resulted in the death of three people. Besides extinguishing the blaze, officials removed the bodies of two men and one woman from the home. The location is in unincorporated north Elmhurst between Grand Ave. and Diversey.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office responded and began an investigation. Throughout the course of the weekend, details began to unfold including the identity of the residents of the home.

The investigation, led by DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick, found that Jamie Jones, 43, of the 3N300 block of Willow Rd in Elmhurst, had apparently shot her two sons, Jason Harris, 16, and Nathan Harris, 19. She then reportedly set the house fire before turning the gun on herself. Representatives from Mendrick’s office said it was initially thought to be a fire investigation but in time, it was determined the deaths were part of a murder-suicide. The Fire Department removed the bodies from the scene prior to County officials’ arrival at the scene.

“The investigation determined that [Jones] took the lives of both of her sons with a firearm before starting her home on fire and committing suicide with a firearm,” Mendrick said in a release.

He later released the following statement: “This is truly a tragedy. An act like this is completely inconceivable. This will be a trying time for the family, the community and our first responders who dealt with the aftermath of this horrible incident. We offer sincere condolences for anyone affected and urge anyone who is going through stressful times in their lives to please seek help.”

They are just starting to spread across the country and [we] opened the first Throw Nation in Columbus, Ohio, in March.”

According to Parker, Throw Nation creates customized experiences for groups like corporate team building events, birthday, bachelor and bachelorette parties, family gatherings, and date nights. The facility has a full bar, just like any other bar, and it has a restaurant that primarily serves “pub grub” – burgers, fries, appetizers, etc.

Among the games available are: Balls in a China Shop - a game show 1. which is created with your party in mind where participants throw baseballs at China plates.

Foot Bowling – similar to bowling except participants throw footballs at pins instead of rolling bowling balls.

Stump - also known as Hammerschlagen, players take turns hammering a nail into a stump with the back end of a rock hammer.

Curling – an Olympic sport that has contestants slide rocks over synthetic ice to land on targets.

Throw Nation is available for ages 7 and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian and they must be at least 12 years old in order to throw axes.

Besides corporate team-building, the facility is also available for charity events and Parker looks forward to getting involved with some of local charitable efforts and causes.

“We would love to have local charities do their fundraising through us,” Parker said. “If you go to our web site, you’ll see a place to click for ‘fundraising.’ We have held numerous charity events, in fact, we just started to put on five events for a local children’s hospital [at the Columbus location]. We will split half the ticket price with the charity and we have all the graphics, the invitations you can use, etc.”

Throw Nation’s location will be in the former Arena Sports Bar on Lake Street in Elmhurst.

The Independent asked if the business would be bringing jobs to the area and Parker said yes. Not only will they need chefs, bartenders and wait staff, they will also need actors with improvisational experience, who will actually audition to work on things like the game show, murder mysteries, etc.

Hundreds of Bensenville residents gathered along the parade route to catch a glimpse of the many fun floats in celebration of Americas Birthday this 4th of July.

Each year the Village plans the parade along with its annual LibertyFest which takes place at Redmond Recreational Complex.

World War II Navy veteran John Ullinskey served as this year’s Grand Marshal for the parade.

He participated in the start of D-Day as well as the invasion of Okinawa. He is now 95 years old and wears his veteran’s hat with pride.

The Village thanks John for his service and for his participation as this year’s Grand Marshal.

The parade totaled 66 floats, which included the Jesse White Tumblers, U.S. Military personnel, Bensenville elected officials and Village staff, local businesses and community groups, as well as Illinois State Representative Kathleen Willis, and many others.

The celebration continued at Redmond Recreation Complex with free ice skating and swimming along with live music.

Libertyfest activities included face painting, bounce houses, musical entertainment, food vendors, 50/50 raffles and a beer tent. The evening was capped off with a fireworks display.

Senator Glowiak champions Blue Collar Jobs Act For more than a generation, young people have been discouraged from seeking blue collar jobs in favor of pursuing college degrees. State Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) passed a measure to help encourage more job seekers to pursue occupations that ensure safety and modernize Illinois’ infrastructure.

Glowiak championed the Blue Collar Jobs Act, which offers tax incentives to companies making significant capital improvements in Illinois based on the withholding tax paid to construction workers.

The program went into effect on July 1, 2019.

“The Blue Collar Jobs Act will lift up middle class families while expanding Illinois’ businesses,” Glowiak said. “The key to growing our state’s economy is creating new jobs, expanding economic opportunities and promoting a business climate that encourages companies to stay, expand and grow in our communities.

The act creates four new tax credits; High Impact Business construction jobs credit, Enterprise Zone construction jobs credit, New Construction EDGE Credit and the River Edge construction jobs credit. The bipartisan program won the support of labor and business groups.

The Blue Collar Jobs Act is similar to the EDGE Tax Credit program, with some of the following features: • An incremental income tax withholding is offered to High Impact Businesses and businesses in

Enterprise Zones and Rivers Edge Areas.

• The credit is larger if the jobs are provided in an underserved area (defined by the EDGE tax regulations).

• The credits to the business (employer) are equal to up to 50% (or in some instances, 75% if the project is in an underserved area) of income tax withheld from construction project contractor and subcontractor employees.

Glowiak states that tax credits can only be redeemed after work is fully completed. There is no risk to the state if a company does not meet requirements since the state has already captured the withholding tax prior to when the credit is issued.

The economic development incentive comes in light of widespread labor shortages in the United States.

The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America and Autodesk reported in a 2018 survey that 80 percent of more than 2,000 U.S. construction companies indicate they are having difficulty hiring construction workers. This is an increase from 70 percent in 2017.

“This bipartisan economic development incentive is a win for Illinois workers, businesses and our economy,” Glowiak said.

“It’s our duty to ensure our workforce meets the needs of the state’s businesses.”

Secretary of State: Photos not being used for identification

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White on July 8 said that his office does not share information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or any other law enforcement agency on the issue of a person’s legal status in the United States.

White made his comment in response to published stories saying that ICE and the Federal Bureau of Investigation use photos from driver services offices nationwide as a means to identify undocumented

persons. Illinois was not mentioned as one of the participating states.

White’s statement serves to underscore this fact.

“If an individual is being sought by a law enforcement agency for criminal activity, we fully cooperate with authorities, but we do not specifically disclose the person’s legal standing.”

This was received from the office of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.

ISRA applauds Governor signing law to address concerns at upcoming event The Governor last week signed legislation aimed at addressing some logistical concerns at the Sparta World Shooting Complex, a move the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) says was needed after the Firearm Dealer License Act became law.

When the poorly written Firearm Dealer License Certification Act was passed, the act snared the World Shooting Complex in the new Dealer License law forcing the Complex to secure a license as a “retail location,” thereby making it almost impossible to follow the law during sporting events. Another unintended consequence was that it was almost impossible to transfer firearms during an event. Senate Bill 1139 addresses those concerns.

“We warned the gun control advocates that their Dealer Licensing Act was going to make it difficult to le-

gally host events at Sparta and would practically halt business at a major southern Illinois attraction and harm an important economic engine to the region,” said Richard Pearson, ISRA Executive Director. “We applaud Gov. Pritzker’s action in signing into law a measure to undo the harm that the World Shooting Complex faced.”

Specifically, SB 1139 provides: • Active duty members of the United States Armed Forces under age 21 do not need parental consent to obtain a FOID card; • Conceal Carry Licenses shall have five years for renewals from the expiration date not from when you renew the license; • The Sparta World Shooting complex does not have to obtain a license as a “retail location” under the Firearm Dealer License Certification Act; • Firearm transfers that take place

during a National Governing body sanctioned event at the Sparta World Shooting Complex are not governed by the Firearm Dealer License Certification Act; • Current or retired law enforcement officers authorized by law to possess a concealed firearm may do so while hunting where the Code would otherwise prohibit the possession of a concealed firearm.

“We appreciate the work Senator Tony Munoz, Representatives Monica Bristow and Nathan Reitz as well as former State Representative Jerry Costello II for their hard work in getting this legislation passed,” Pearson said. “While we wish the bill was not a necessary one, we are pleased the Senate Bill 1139 has been signed into law.”

Vacations, no matter what time of year are preferable to a regular old non-vacation week. But in my opinion, summer beats winter any month of the year. Summer is warm weather. Summer is sunshine beaming off the lake.

Summer is cool water and cold drinks. Summer is barbecue and corn on the cob. Summer is draping wet beach towels over the deck railing to dry. Summer is summer solstice.

Summer days are longer than winter days so you get more bang for your buck with a vacation during June, July or August. A stretched out lazy and carefree

day makes time for late morning brunches and late night sunsets.

Breakfast can morph into lunch and lunch into dinner.

You are free to sleep in and stay up late without any guilt or tiredness. An afternoon nap sounds like a good idea, because it is.

Summer vacations often involve one of my favorite places: the beach. In the best case scenario, a beach is made up of sand, which can be used to build castles or sculptures or just run through your

fingers or toes.

After sand, one of the best features of the beach is that it is nearly always in close proximity to recreational water. Not the kind of recreational water that you drink, although that also goes well with the beach on occasion.

Recreational water as in a lake, the ocean, a river and even a large pond – you get the idea.

There are all sorts of ways to recreate on or in the water.

Swimming for the fit folks. Skiing and tubing for the thrill-seekers.

Fishing for the patient types. Floating on a floaty for the floaters, Surfing. Sailing.

Splashing. Skipping rocks.

Gathering shells. Catching minnows. Boating. Kite boarding.

Kayaking. Canoeing. Jumping off the dock. Watching the tide roll

out – or in – or why not both?

You’re on vacation.

Summer vacations are filled with summer foods and drinks like watermelon and lemonade. I don’t remember ever eating watermelon in the winter. Its juicy sweetness is best saved for summer. The same goes for lemonade, except it’s more tart than sweet. Hot dogs, beans and potato salad – could there be a sweeter (and savory) summer meal?

Clothing needed during summer vacation is minimal. Packing nearly effortless. The most important item (after sunscreen) is the swimsuit, which you are free to wear all day if you choose. Beach towels are a necessity. Shoes are optional, but flip flops are fun.

Throw in a pair or two of shorts and a couple T-shirts and you are

set for the week.

By far the best thing about a summer vacation is that the word “vacation” is often preceded by the word “family.” A family vacation beats a summer vacation and a family summer vacation is the best vacation of them all.

Spending quantity and quality time with family doing whatever you love doing together is just as awesome as sitting on the deck eating watermelon and watching the beach towels dry in the late evening sunshine. Maybe even more so.

State Senator Tom Cullerton works to eliminate Franchise Tax Over the next five years, businesses will gradually cease to pay the archaic franchise tax under legislation championed by State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park).

“As a state it is our duty to adopt policies that encourage economic growth and development,” Cullerton said. “The elimination of this convoluted tax will encourage business owners to expand and grow in our communities.”

Created in 1872, the corporate franchise tax is a tax on “paid in capital” for the privilege of doing business in Illinois. Last year, 346,000 companies paid about $172

million in taxes. After Illinois’ franchise tax is eliminated, only seven states in the nation will still impose a similar tax.

“Taxing businesses sends the wrong message,” Cullerton said.

“Business owners should not be penalized for doing businesses in Illinois.”

Cullerton has also supported a new amnesty program for overdue franchise taxes and license fees.

Under that program, penalties are waived for payment of any overdue taxes or fees for the period of March 15, 2008 to June 30, 2019.

In 2017, Cullerton also champi-

oned a law that dropped the filling fees for small businesses to register in Illinois from $500 to $150 and lowered the annual filing fee for LLCs from $250 to a much lower fee of $75.

“Cutting startup fees will help new businesses get off the ground and grow roots in Illinois,” Cullerton said. “We must continue to do whatever we can to encourage economic development in our state to create new jobs, increase the tax base and spur economic development.”

State lawmakers who voted to reject pay raises violated the law, judge rules 2 former lawmakers seek back pay, likely opening legal door for others

Every lawmaker who served in the General Assembly between 2009 and 2018 might be entitled to back pay, a Cook County judge decided. Former governors and other state office holders might also qualify for lost wages.

Circuit Court Judge Franklin Valderrama ruled legislators violated the state’s governing document by approving laws that froze cost-of-living increases and implemented furlough days for themselves and state office holders for nearly a decade.

It was unconstitutional, he decided, because the laws altered wages during terms for which the lawmakers were elected.

The ruling, which could be an unexpected drag on the state’s finances, is a victory for two former senators — Democrats Michael Noland, from Elgin, and James Clayborne, Jr., from Belleville —who sued the state seeking lost wages.

“The purpose of the lawsuit we filed was to protect and vindicate the independence of each legislator of the General Assembly,” Noland and Clayborne said in a statement. “...

It is our hope that the Circuit Court decision will be followed and the impacted legislators will be paid what they are due.”

The statement was distributed by their attorney, Michael Scotti III from the Chicago-based firm Roetzell & Andress. Noland is now a

judge in Kane County and Clayborne is an attorney.

Their case could be consequential. While Valderrama did not order Comptroller Susana Mendoza to issue back pay to the former senators, he did leave the option for Noland and Clayborne to take further action to seek state funds.

While the lawsuit is applicable only to Noland and Clayborne, its outcome could create an avenue for other lawmakers to seek the same financial relief.

Potentially, those lost wages could be sought by and paid out to all members of the General Assembly who were affected by the statutes the judge deemed unconstitutional—the cost-of-living freeze, effective from July 2009 through June 2018, and the furlough days, effective from 2009 through 2013, according to the ruling issued July 2.

And because lawmakers’ pensions are calculated based on salary, any distribution of back pay would impact pension benefits as well, said Kent Redfield, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Illinois Springfield. “(The case) perfectly illustrates why voters don’t trust politicians,” Mendoza said in a statement. “...

This is another sad week for Illinois taxpayers.”

A lawmaker’s base-pay had been $67,836, until it rose by $1,600 at the beginning of this month after the first

cost-of-living increase since 2008 went into effect.

The lawsuit could also impact former governors and constitutional officers.

“I think if you read the Executive Article the same way the trial judge reads the Legislative Article (of the Constitution), every statewide elected officer will also be entitled to this money,” said Charlie Wheeler said, director of the Public Affairs Reporting program at the University of Illinois Springfield and a former bureau chief for the Chicago Sun-Times.

Valderrama based his ruling on a section of the state’s governing document that mandates “a member shall receive a salary and allowances as provided by law, but changes in the salary of a member shall not take effect during the term for which he has been elected.” Similar language exists for those in the executive branch.

When members of the General Assembly voted over the past decade to prevent cost-of-living increases from taking effect, it also affected the wages of the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller and treasurer.

Ann Lousin, a constitutional law professor at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago who helped write Illinois’ Constitution, said a legal door could be left open for former constitutional officers to seek back pay as well.

Cost of living adjustments were

the genesis of an impartial panel of 12 volunteers, called the Compensation Review Board, created in 1984 to advise on salary increases.

“It rose out of the Legislature’s political difficulty of setting its own salary,” Redfield said. “They tried to, to a certain extent, hide behind the Compensation Review Board.”

Legislators abolished it in 2009, but preserved one of its recommendations—an annual, automatic costof-living wage increase at the rate of inflation.

Noland and Clayborne voted to freeze the cost-of-living bump in 2012. At the time, Noland said in a caucus statement that because “most working families in Illinois are not seeing raises this year ... we shouldn’t either.” Clayborne called “rejecting this pay raise ... the right thing to do.”

But Valderrama ruled that preventing those wage adjustments from taking effect was unconstitutional.

“It is undisputed that the effect of the statutes was to alter or change the salaries of the members of the General Assembly during their term in office,” he wrote in the opinion.

That same rationale applies to the mandatory furlough days legislators instituted for four years—a kind of “political theater,” Redfield said, wherein members of the General Assembly mandated they take self-imposed leaves of absence to cut costs.

Lousin said it is possible for mem-

bers of the General Assembly to forgo their cost-of-living adjustments while adhering to the confines of Illinois’ Constitution.

“They could pass a resolution asking each member of their caucuses to voluntarily give up the COLAs by returning the money back to the state,” she said. “It would be constitutional because it’s not a statute compelling them, but instead the heads of the caucuses asking their members to return what would be the COLAs as a donation back to the state.”

The key, Julie Roin said, would be for legislators not to pass a statute mandating members take action that is effective in the middle of the term to which they are elected. Roin is a professor at the University of Chicago Law School.

Officials at Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office have until Aug. 2 to decide how they want to respond to Valderrama’s ruling. A spokesperson said, “We are reviewing the decision.”

“I strongly oppose Noland’s shameless money-grab and will fight it, either through an appeal, or in this court as the remaining counts proceed,” Mendoza said in a statement.

“We will work with Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office to review this week’s ruling and our legal options.”

The judge’s ruling was on only some of the counts included in the lawsuit. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Aug. 7.

Audit: State’s technology department full of waste, unequipped to deal with disaster CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

In its first two years of existence, the state’s lead technology agency was not equipped to handle technology disasters, maintained servers and computers with inadequate or nonexistent anti-virus protection, failed to implement cybersecurity controls, and did not properly document purchases or property inventory, according to a report from the Illinois Auditor General’s office.

The audit of the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology — a state agency created in January 2016 through an executive order signed by former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner — also found that an effort to consolidate financial, human capital and procurement functions for all state agencies will cost $150 million more than initially estimated over a six-year implementation period.

The Enterprise Resource Planning System, launched during former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration and overseen by the Illinois Department of Central Management Services before being taken over by DOIT, will cost just under $400 million by 2021, up from an initial estimate of $250 million.

These findings were among 30 listed in Auditor General Frank Mautino’s report for fiscal years 2017 and 2018, the first two years of operation for the department created to “deliver best-in-class innovation and technology to client agencies.”

Jennifer Schultz, a spokeswoman for DOIT, said failure to execute the requirements of the executive order was due to a number of factors, including state government dysfunction.

“The executive order establishing DOIT called for an immediate unification, which did not fully account for the transition period needed to bring the IT offices of 38 different agencies into one department,” she said in an emailed statement. “These challenges were exacerbated by the budget crisis under the previous administration. Since that time, the de-

partment has made significant progress and we are confident the new secretary (Ron Guerrier) and a fully funded state government will allow us to operate at full capacity.”

Guerrier, a former chief information officer for Toyota, was nominated by Pritzker in March to replace Jack King, who resigned as acting director in February. He is serving in an acting capacity as he awaits confirmation by the Senate.

DOIT’s mission is to “transform information technology systems,” “protect state data and systems from cyberattacks and breaches,” enable agencies to “provide better services” and to “reduce costs and avoid inefficiencies through innovation,” according to the auditor’s summary of DOIT’s annual report to the General Assembly.

But auditors detailed several findings that showed the department directly failed at executing some of its most basic core functions, while also failing in several other accounting and managerial functions.

The audit, released Tuesday, July 9, said DOIT “had not developed detailed disaster recovery plans for the mainframe and midrange environments.”

“Failure to have tested comprehensive plans could result in agencies not being able to process critical transactions for an extended period of time in the event of disaster,” the report said.

On the same day the report was released, the Department of Employment Security was in the middle of a more than two-day outage of the system it relies on to distribute unemployment checks. The system was back online Thursday, with checks expected to be released Friday after a two-day delay.

Schultz said attempts to identify the cause of the service disruption led to a 3 percent loss of data storage on the state’s mainframe system due to “technician error.”

“The mainframe environment houses a variety of applications utilized by many state agencies, but does not include every state system,”

she said in a follow-up email Friday.

“While determining the cause of the service disruption, mainframe operations were ceased. A technician error resulted in loss of a portion of data in storage.”

She added: “(T)he vast majority of impacted systems are successfully operating. A small number of applications are currently in the final stages of being restored to operation.”

Auditors also detailed servers running with unsupported operating systems and without anti-virus protection. At the time of the report, 551 computers maintained by the department did not have up-to-date anti-virus software, and 3,692 computers did not have the latest anti-virus definitions.

According to the audit, DOIT could not produce documentation of weekly reviews of security records, annual reviews of which users had powerful security privileges or assessments of newly discovered vulnerabilities.

The report also found initial intergovernmental agreements between DOIT and other state agencies did not address “the security, processing integrity, availability and confidentiality of the user agencies systems and data.”

Another finding details the department’s lack of internal controls over third-party service providers.

According to the report, DOIT agreed with all 30 findings and attributed them to causes such as “oversight,” “lack of resources,” “poor communication” and “cash

flow difficulties.” The audit also noted procedures had been, or would be, put in place to address several of the material weaknesses and deficiencies in the report, but it is unclear which of the findings have been rectified.

The department’s tracking of property was particularly lax, according to the report, which made note of 17 “missing computers” totaling $57,424 worth of property. Fourteen of those computers may have contained confidential information, as DOIT was unable to provide documentation as to what was contained on them.

DOIT was also unable to provide auditors with the purchase dates or prices for 2,305 items in its inventory, while another 6,928 items worth $5.7 million did not have purchase prices or dates initially logged.

Another 4,965 inventory items totaling $19 million were transferred to the department from other agencies but not recorded in DOIT’s records.

The department also failed to maintain records of more than $1 million of property that was deleted from its inventory, while hundreds of thousands of dollars in other property transfers and deletions were conducted without proper oversight.

Schultz said new systems are in place for tracking property.

“When DOIT was established, the IT offices of 38 different agencies were brought under the same roof.

Many of these offices operated under different property control policies or lacked policies entirely. DOIT now operates under uniform established procedures and utilizes a computer

application for intake and reporting.

Inaccurate data has been and continues to be corrected,” she said in an email.

The report also faulted the agency for not cooperating with Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza, who questioned DOIT expenditures after defeating Rauner-ally Leslie Munger in a 2016 election.

The report said Mendoza was holding $124.9 million in vouchers submitted to her office without proper documentation from DOIT, accruing $20 million in interest. A spokesman for Mendoza said the comptroller’s office was working with DOIT to determine which of those vouchers are valid.

“More than two years ago, we flagged some of the problems cited in this audit,” Mendoza said in a statement. “We noted the ‘ERP’ computerizations was a program in crisis.

This independent investigation validated our actions, which included asking tough questions, bringing it to the attention of the public and stopping payment to vendors. While the audit finding is embarrassing for the prior administration, what’s worse is that under Governor Bruce Rauner’s leadership, his agency cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars with no substantial results to show for it.”

The audit also detailed $4.1 million in overtime paid to staff without proper approval, poor documentation of emergency purchases, inadequate controls for state vehicles and employee cellphone contracts which were not canceled until nearly a year after employees left the department.

State unemployment site back up after outage; crash tied to 3 percent loss of mainframe data storage

The Illinois Department of Employment Security’s unemployment claim system was back online July 11 after a more than two-day outage

rendered the system unable to distribute unemployment checks or accept claims and certifications online.

“The mainframe system experienced a partial loss (3 percent) of data storage,” Department of Innovation and Technology spokeswoman Jennifer Schultz said in a statement, adding that staff members have “successfully restored the vast majority of affected

systems impacted by the outage.

“Staff remains focused on resolving issues with the remaining impacted applications. A full evaluation of the event will be conducted to identify potential areas for improvement and to strengthen processes, posture, and resiliency to ensure this does not happen in the future,” her statement said.

“Those who were unable to certify or file new claims over the past few days should do so now,” Sam Salustro, IDES spokesman, said in a statement. “Payments can take up to two days to process, so those benefit recipients should expect payments by Monday.”

Claimants can once again file new claims or certify their unemployment status online through the Illinois Benefit Information System. Ongoing events • Addison Center for the Arts hosts Concerts in the Gazebo Tuesday evenings July 23, 30 and Aug. 13 Get your lawn chairs and coolers full of your favorite relaxing beverages ready for another summer of music under the stars at the Addison Village Green Gazebo at One Friendship Plaza. The concerts are from 7-9 p.m. In case of rain, these Tuesday night concerts will move inside to the Village Hall rotunda.

July 23—The Limited Edition. The fourth concert features the Limited Edition Big Band. It plays a variety of music from the great touring bands such as Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, and Woody Herman to classics by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman. These 18 musicians, many of whom are session players or members of other jazz, big band or pop bands in the Chicago Metro area, are a “cream of the crop” ensemble. Its members have toured with big band stars such as Henry Mancini and Ray Charles and the band showcases many fine soloists from all sections.

One of their featured players, Cary Davids, moonlights as a nuclear physicist under the stars.

July 30—Blue Buddha Band. The Blue Buddha Band will be performing their special mix of jazz and blues in an evening under the stars, outside in the Gazebo at the Addison Village Hall. The show is free; just bring your lawn chair.

Aug. 13—Rokkor will close out the ACA’s season of Concerts in the Gazebo. The band plays our favorite classic rock songs just the way we remember them.

In Funeral Service In 1892, Arthur F. Ahlgrim established the Ahlgrim Undertaking Parlor in Chicago. At that time, he had no idea he was starting a family tradition that would span four generations. Arthur’s son, Walter, joined the firm in 1925 after graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. New insights and resources for small businesses (StatePoint) Small businesses are critical to powering the national economy. They are also responsible for creating two out of every three new jobs in the country each year, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Diane Kilcommons has a master’s degree in education and has taught for 35 years, including home educating her four children. Diane and her husband, Mark, have owned Huntington Learning Center for the past nine years. Huntington Learning Center helps children improve their foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling, math, and phonics. They also help students prepare for college with their individualized exam prep programs. Higher test scores mean more opportunities. When asked what inspired you to be a teacher? Diane replied, “ I believe my desire to be a teacher was a God given gift.

I cooperated with His plan for me.” At Huntington Learning Center, children gain the foundational skills they need, which in turn, gives them confidence and motivation.

In addition to managing a learning center, Diane was very active in raising her children. Her oldest daughter, Lauren, has a master’s degree from Loyola and is a school psychologist in a suburban school district. Her second daughter, Julia has a master’s degree in nursing from DePaul and is an emergency room nurse in the western suburbs. Diane‘s youngest, twin sons, Patrick and John were able to benefit greatly by attending Huntington Learning Center themselves. Currently, Pat and John are retired from football and finished their season with a nine and one record. They graduated from Dartmouth College in June and are gainfully employed.

Together with his team of employees, Jim O’Connor runs O’Connor Garage Door located just off of Route 83. Jim has been in the garage door business for 16 years and knows the importance of a well installed and working garage door in the Chicago area. In addition, Jim has been sprinkling a little luck o’ the Irish over Elmhurst’s St. Patrick Day parade since 2005.

His Blood Runs Green Jim O’Connor is a second-generation Irishman; all four of his grandparents came from Ireland to America seeking a better life. “My dad used to say ‘we’re Americans, not Irishman,’” says O’Connor.

The stockily built O’Connor grew up on Kearsage Avenue, along with his six siblings, and attended Immaculate Conception grade school and high school. He forged lifelong friendships during his time at IC, including his good friend Paul Koch, whom he’s been friends with since the first grade. Paul, who is part-owner of Elmhurst-based Larry Roesch Chrysler Jeep Dodge, offers a rare glimpse of the reticent O’Connor by saying, “I think going to IC helped us become good guys; it was part of our ‘Leave it to Beaver’ upbringing.”

Koch adds, “Jim is seen by some, at first glance, as being cantankerous, but one quickly realizes he has a heart of gold. That’s why he organizes the St. Pat’s parade. He loves Elmhurst and wants everyone to have fun together, although he’d never admit it.”

Jim O’Connor married Mary Doolan in 1993. They have four children: Tim, Molly, Bill and Kimberly, pictured with her husband Mike and sons Dylan and Luca. O’Connor says, “My wife is mother-of-the-year.” O’Connor and his wife enjoy spending a lot of time with their grandkids.

O’Connor’s parents, Bill and Rosaleen, still live in the house where they raised their seven children. He credits them with his strong sense of faith and family. O’Connor says, “My parents raised a great family. All of us, kids, love and respect them very much.”

Jim O’Connor appreciates his Irish heritage and the strength he draws from friends, family and his community. It’s no surprise, why he chose to open his business in Elmhurst. O’Connor says, “We look out for each other here.”

Addison Trail boys basketball team enjoys more summer home cooking Blazers accomplished plenty between shootouts and camp days

As has been its custom in recent years, the Addison Trail boys basketball team parked it at home for the majority of its summer slate.

“We’ve been doing the same thing we’ve done the last six or seven years where we hosted a lot of shootouts at our place,” said Addison Trail coach Brendan Lyons.

Addison Trail also played at the Willowbrook shootout that was a live NCAA recruiting period event.

“We played about 27 games,” said Lyons. “We also had 13 days of camp. That’s more than enough for the summer. We started this concept about eight years ago where it was really small with these eight-team shootouts at our place where you play three games back-to-back-toback.

“We did eight of those this summer. It’s very convenient for us. We have a lot of guys on the team who do multiple sports. We get a lot of teams from around the Chicago metro area to come over. It ends up being a pretty good diversity of teams.”

Lyons said this summer was of particular importance to his team. “If you look back on what we lost from last year, it was a ton,” he said. “We did not have a lot of guys back with experience. It was almost like we had a clean slate for everybody. We needed to see these guys play.”

AJ Carlson is the only returning player with substantial varsity experience. “AJ is a three-year, threesport guy with a lot of varsity experience,” said Lyons. “He’s a guy that we know what we are getting from him. He was busy this summer with all of his sports, but we were able to see him.

“We were able to play a lot of upand-coming juniors and rising sophomores. We got a good feel for who can play at the varsity level. We were able to get a lot of information and see a lot of kids. This will give us a good idea of what we want to do come November.”

Lyons liked how his squad shot the ball. “We shot the ball better than expected, in particular I thought Alex Conrad, a returning senior, shot the ball consistently well,” he said.

“When AJ was in there for us, he shot the ball well.”

Junior Robert Roszkiewicz, who played up with the varsity last season, also was impressive. “Robert is our biggest guy at 6-6 and showed a lot of versatility playing down low and shooting the ball from the perimeter,” said Lyons. “Robert, AJ and Alex really stood out for us shooting the basketball.”

Lyons said the Blazers also experimented with different defenses this summer. “When you look at our lack of size and overall lack of height, we’ve been a man-to-man team here. In my 13 years we’ve been man-to-man probably 98 percent of the time,” he explained. “We experimented with zone a little bit and got a good feel for what we can handle. It was good to get that information. We are not going to be bigger and faster than a lot of teams. To keep guys in games, we’ve started looking at maybe some other options. We’re not committing to it full-time, but I liked what I saw. It was a good changeup for us.”

Sophomore Sammy Renc also had a strong summer. “He battled through a nagging injury and played at the three-spot for us and took positive steps forward,” said Lyons.

Senior Gonzalo Reyes also opened some eyes. “Gonzalo is a scrappy guy who sets the tone,” Lyons said.

“He has good energy and a good spark on the floor. He did some nice things for us as well.”

Lyons said the team heads into the off-season in a much better place.

“We wanted to get a big enough sample size of guys, especially with the inexperience we have,” he said. “I liked how the guys competed. I got a good feel for things. I saw who has a passion for the game and who deserves to be on the team and earn playing time. In this short amount of time we learned a lot about the kids.

It’s the off-season now, but soon enough we’ll be back in school and then it will be the start of the season.”

Burns, who spent 12 seasons with the Mariners, graduated from Willowbrook High School earlier this year. He will soon attend the University of Iowa. Fox, who also graduated from Willowbrook this year, swam with the Mariners for 11 seasons. She will continue her academic and swimming careers at Monmouth College. Benedict, who recently graduated from St. Francis High School in Wheaton, spent eight seasons with the Mariners. He will continue his academic and swimming careers at Grove City College in Pennsylvania.

Fenton student-athletes rack up all-conference awards Bison girls track and softball teams lead way with combined 13 honors

Fenton student-athletes were recognized for their achievements on the field in various sports throughout the 2018-2019 school year.

In the recently completed spring season, David Burch was an all-conference selection for the Fenton baseball team.

For boys track and field, Javier Cabral, James Deckert and Nicholas Herringer earned all-Metro Suburban Conference honors.

Anthony Galeana and Adam Gebala were all-conference selections in boys volleyball. Kimberly Rivera was an all-conference pick for the Bison in girls soccer.

For girls softball the awards were abundant. Cynthia Abarra, Anaisa Lozada, Ashley Milano, Claira Panos, Gianna Saldana and Alyssa Texta were all-Metro Suburban Conference Red Division selections.

In girls track, a total of seven Bison were named to the all-conference team. That list included Theresa Clanton, Allison Durkowski, Hanna Matuszewski, Rebecca Millard, Hailey Miller, Mackenzie Miller and Analisa Murillo.

During the winter season, Diamon King was all-conference in boys basketball.

Nikolas Fischer, Lucas Feddersen, Matthew Janovsky and Conrad Oberski were all-conference in boys swimming and diving.

Ramiro Bracamontes, Burch, Jeremy Piskorz and Daniel Ramirez were all-conference in wrestling.

Alexus Arzola and Lozada were all-conference in girls basketball.

For cheerleading, Brittany Hernandez, Jocelyn Ramirez and Elizabeth Rodirguez were all-conference picks, while Karsen Ericksen, Marilyn Medina, Natalie Natiello, Kirby O’Donnell and Dale Perry were all-conference selections in dance force.

Going back to the fall season, Samuel Elizondo was all-conference in boys cross country.

The Fenton football team had Jeffrey Andrews, Kyle Cacioppo, Deck-

ert and Julian Giles earned all-conference honors.

Marcus Astorga and Fischer were all-conference in boys golf.

Ismael Ibarez, Ivan Jaramillo, Konrad Madej, Branny Salas and Abraham Sanchez were all-conference in boys soccer.

Mackenzie Miller and Victoria Krzyszkowski were all-conference in girls volleyball.

For the three athletic seasons, Mackenzie Miller, Nikolas Fischer, James Deckert and Anaisa Lozada each earned two all-conference honors, as did David Burch. Miller was all-conference in girls track and girls volleyball, while Fischer logged his honors in swimming and diving and boys golf. Deckert was all-conference in track and football, while Lozada earned all-conference honors in girls basketball and softball. Burch was an all-conference pick in baseball and wrestling.

In terms of team honors, the Fenton girls track team led the way with seven all-conference selections, followed by the girls softball team with six honorees. The boys soccer team had five all-conference selections, as did the winter dance force team.

Mariners wrap up the regular season with a home loss to Roselle Villa Park swimmers will finish the season at the Blue Division’s ‘B’ and ‘A’ meets

The Villa Park Mariners completed the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference regular season with Saturday’s home meet against the Roselle Racers. Roselle defeated the Mariners 378-274 at Jefferson Pool.

Villa Park completed its regular season with a 5-4 record. Some Mariners will complete the regular season at this weekend’s Blue Division ‘B’ Meet at Roselle. Other Mariners will finish the season at the Blue Division ‘A’ Meet, which takes place July 27 in Glendale Heights.

Hanover Park, Glendale Heights and Wood Dale join Villa Park in the DuPage Swim and Dive Conference’s Blue Division this season.

Hanover Park is the host team of this Saturday’s meet in Roselle.

The Mariners who won multiple individual events during Saturday’s meet against Roselle included Phoebe Aldana, who won the 50-meter freestyle and the 25-meter butterfly in the 8-and-under girls division; Audrey Morgan, who delivered victories in the 50-meter freestyle and the 50-meter butterfly in the 11-12 girls level; Harper Conboy, who won the 50-meter freestyle and the 50-meter backstroke in the 13-14 girls division; and Jack Burns of the 15-18 boys level, who swam to wins in the 50-meter freestyle and the 50-meter butterfly.

Ella Yates of the 9-10 girls level also earned a pair of first-place finishes. She won the 50-meter butterfly, and she and fellow Mariner Maya Czech tied for first in the 100-meter freestyle. Both Villa Park swimmers completed the race in 1 minute, 31.30 seconds.

Villa Park’s other individual champions in Saturday’s meet were: Lars Bentsen (8-and-under boys; 50-meter freestyle); Naomi Aldana (9-10 girls; 100-meter individual medley); Finnley Morgan (9-10 boys; 100-meter individual medley); Bennett Vea (9-10 boys; 50-meter butterfly); Ben Evenson (9-10 boys; 50-meter backstroke); Benjamin Dean (11-12 boys; 50-meter breaststroke); Mary Turner (13-14 girls; 100-meter individual medley); Kaitlyn Fox (15-18 girls; 50-meter freestyle); Caitlin Brennan (15-18 girls; 100-meter freestyle); DeAnna Tate (15-18 girls; 50-meter butterfly); and Aidan Nichols (15-18 boys; 50-meter breaststroke).

Villa Park’s winning relay teams included the 8-and-under girls quartet of Lydia Aldana, Brooke Turner, Phoebe Aldana and Colleen Pienkos; the foursome earned a victory in the 100-meter medley relay. Ella Yates, Naomi Aldana and Maya Czech swam on two winning relay teams in the 9-10 girls level. They joined Lilly Buscher to win the 200-meter medley relay and teamed with Francesca Monteleone for a first-place effort in the 200-meter freestyle relay.

The 15-18 girls trio of DeAnna Tate, Carolyn Burns and Kylie Moses swam on two first-place relay teams. They swam with Lexi Ream to win the 200-meter medley relay.

They teamed with Kelsey Fitzgerald on the 200-meter freestyle relay.

The Mariners added a pair of relay victories in the 15-18 boys division.

Cole McGinnis, Aidan Nichols and Jack Burns swam on both first-place foursomes. They joined Spencer Benedict to win the 200-meter medley relay and swam with Raymond Brisbois on the winning 200-meter freestyle relay team.

Three days before competing against Roselle, the Mariners faced the Carol Stream Dolphins in Carol Stream. The Dolphins defeated Villa Park 437-204. The Mariners’ individual champions in the July 10 meet included Maisie Thompson, who won three events (100-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard breaststroke) in the 11-12 girls division.

Aidan Nichols (100-yard individual medley, 50-yard breaststroke) and Jack Burns (100-yard freestyle, 50-

yard butterfly) each won two events in the 15-18 boys level. Phoebe Aldana earned a pair of victories (25yard butterfly, 25-yard breaststroke) in the 8-and-under girls division.

Jonathan Lynch (9-10 boys) provided a victory in the 50-yard freestyle, while Bennett Vea (9-10 boys) won the 50-yard butterfly. Mia Nichols (13-14 girls) provided a firstplace finish in the 50-yard butterfly.

Benjamin Dean (11-12 boys) swam to a victory in the 50-yard breaststroke.

The 9-10 boys foursome of Jonathan Lynch, Jurgen Carrola, Bennett Vea and Miles Romano won the 200-yard freestyle relay. Matthew Fitzgerald, Aiden Aristuk, Ronan Dvorak and Benjamin Dean won the 200-yard freestyle relay in the 11-12 boys division. The Mariners won two relays in the 15-18 boys level. Willowbrook girls basketball team concludes highly successful summer season Warriors post 27 wins; Enjoy team camp at Grand Valley State University

A 27-7 record in any sporting endeavor falls into the superior category.

Willowbrook girls basketball coach Terry Harrell concurs with that assessment after his team posted that mark during the recently completed summer season.

“We played extremely well,” he said. “We did lose our post player during the summer to injury, but we still played well despite having no size in the middle. Having a 27-7 record, I was really happy with what we did over the summer.”

Willowbrook is returning three starters from last year’s squad, plus

a fourth player who logged extensive minutes as well. “So that’s four-fifths of our starting lineup going into this year. They played very well. I thought the whole team played well and everybody played well together.

We have a nice junior class coming in that looked pretty good as well.”

Willowbrook returns K’Aliyha Herron, Grace Tumilty, Stephanie Dasbach and Annemarie Knudtson from last year’s team. “Those four played a lot for us last year,” said Harrell. “They all averaged more than 20 minutes of playing time a game.”

Willowbrook’s fifth starter in the summer was Olivia Sobieszczyk.

“Olivia is a welcome addition,” said Harrell. “She’s suited for the big guard spot. She gets in there and uses her strength and rebounds. I feel confident where we are at right now

at this point. Hopefully everybody stays healthy. I thought we passed the ball very well as a team. In the first half of the summer we shot the ball very well. With the summer time, we’re squeezing 35 games into 20 days. I thought we rebounded well for a smaller team and played great team defense. Those games in the summer are 36-40 minutes with running clocks. We’re out there averaging 10 steals a game and we were really tough on the perimeter defensively.”

Harrell isn’t too concerned about the team’s shooting dropping off at the end of the summer. “Hopefully our shot comes back,” he said. “We were playing games at a pretty hectic pace there. One week we had 15 games.”

Willowbrook competed in the Morris shootout and also hosted its

own shootout. As usual, the Warriors ventured to Grand Valley State in Michigan for a team camp. “Grand Valley State is a good opportunity to go up there and play against teams we don’t normally see. It’s different competition and different styles of play, and that makes the girls adjust.

That camp is a good experience. It’s good for team bonding. We go away to the campus and they put the girls in dorms with girls from the college team. My favorite part is the drive back from Grand Valley State because the girls act like a family. That bonding experience is very important.”

The Warriors also did a one-day shootout down in Bradley and another at Loyola Academy. Willowbrook did not play in a summer league.

In addition to Sobiescheck’s contributions, Harrell also was happy

with the play from the likes of Hannah Guthrie, Abby Spada and Kenya Lewis.

“Hannah filled a big spot for us this summer,” said Harrell. “Abby is a guard who is real quick, played great defensively and handled the ball well. Kenya is a small, quick guard who also is a good ball handler and defender. We saw marked improvement in a lot of kids such as returning players K’Aliyha Herron and Grace Tumilty, and it was great to see Annemarie Knutdson take more shots. We played well together and I loved the overall improvement of the girls. It looked like the experience we had from last year will really help us this coming season. Our starting lineup is going to be very solid and we’re working hard on improving our depth. I think we can be a good team this year.”

Elmhurst American Legion 17U baseball team defeats Wheaton Muddogs gearing up for 2nd Division tournament

The Elmhurst 17U American Legion baseball team returned to tournament play at the recent Wheaton Legion Classic held at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream.

Elmhurst opened play with an 8-3 win over host Wheaton Post 76.

The Muddogs then dropped a tough 18-0 decision to Moline Post 246. Moline scored six runs in the first and seven more in the third in-

ning.

Michael Hilgart (IC Catholic Prep) had a hit, as did AJ Howard (ICCP).

Nick DeSimone (Fenton), Andrew Zwolinski (IC Catholic Prep), Julius Sanchez and Jake Galanis each walked. Sanchez stole two bases.

Kyle Mitchell (Fenton), Zwolinski and DeSimone pitched in the game.

Post 187 then lost 9-4 to Danville Post 210 in the Wheaton Classic. The game was knotted at 2-2 until Danville scored five runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth to open things up.

Elmhurst had seven hits. Jack

Klein went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. DeSimone had a run scored and two walks. Galanis had an RBI. Marcos Montoya (Fenton) walked.

Sanchez had two hits. Ricky Saucedo (Fenton) had a hit, a run scored and a walk. Abraham Otero (Fenton) had a hit and an RBI, while Victor Hyso (York) had a hit. Otero doubled, while Klein stole two bases. Galanis and Montoya pitched. The duo combined to strike out seven Danville batters.

The Muddogs also lost 11-0 to Ford County Post 432. Ford County scored four runs in the third and four

more runs in the fifth inning.

DeSimone walked in the game, as did Galanis. Saucedo had a hit. Damian Pacheco and Klein also each had a hit. Montoya stole a base.

Saucedo and Hilgart pitched for Elmhurst, which sported a 4-11-1 record through late last week.

In earlier action, Elmhurst dropped a 6-1 game to the Manhattan Badgers at Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee.

Manhattan led 3-0 until Elmhurst scored a run in the sixth inning. Manhattan added three runs in the seventh inning.

Jack Ryan (ICCP) and Klein each had a hit for Elmhurst. Hilgart and Ryan each drew walks. Zwolinski had an RBI. Hilgart stole two bases and Zwolinski had one steal.

Elmhurst now turns its attention toward the upcoming Illinois 2nd Division tournament hosted by Wheaton Post 76 at Pfund Stadium.

Elmhurst opens play on July 25 at 7:30 p.m. against Round Lake.

The victor faces the winner of the Morris and Palos contest. The double-elimination tournament also features Wheaton and Steger and runs through July 28.

Elmhurst Post 187 splits pair of games Muddogs competing in 11th District tournament this week

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 baseball team split a pair of games ahead of its participation in the 11th District tournament, the annual start of the American Legion playoffs.

Elmhurst dropped a 3-0 decision to the Chicago Pirates at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst. Chicago scored single runs in the second,

fourth and sixth innings.

Ryan Malek (IC Catholic Prep) had two hits in three trips to the plate.

Connor Gwaltney (Timothy Christian) drew a walk. Dave Sykora (IC Catholic Prep), AJ Parnell (Addison Trail) and Jimmy O’Donnell (Leyden) each stole a base.

Sykora pitched the first four innings and allowed no earned runs, while striking out four. Tim Beecroft (Fenton) pitched the final three innings and struck out two.

The score was tied 1-1 through three innings before Elmhurst scored a run in the fifth and then five more in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead. The Muddogs added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning and held off a late Beloit rally. The game featured a total of 23 hits.

Ian Steinorth (York) had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Malek had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Parnell had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Jack Enright (IC Catholic Prep) had two hits and an RBI. Tim Bowbin (York) had a hit, an

RBI and a run scored. Gwaltney had two hits. O’Donnell had a hit, scored three runs and walked twice. Beecroft scored two runs and walked twice.

Malek and O’Donnell each doubled, while Steinorth and Malek each hit a triple. Steinorth and Parnell each had a stolen base. Bowbin had a sacrifice fly.

Ken Slepicka (Fenwick) started and went three innings. He struck out two and allowed three hits. Parnell and Malek also pitched. Steinorth pitched the seventh and earned the save for Slepicka’s victory.

Post 187 was in the midst of the 11th District tournament earlier this

week in Carol Stream, which starts the American Legion playoffs. Elmhurst was one of four squads in the tournament along with Wheaton Post 76, Elgin Post 57 and Steger Post 521. Elmhurst opened play against Wheaton.

The winner of the 11th District tournament advances to the 2nd Division tournament also hosted by Wheaton Post 76 at Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream. Barrington Post 158 hosts this year’s Department tournament July 27-30. Post 93 out of Charleston, Illinois is the host of this year’s Great Lakes Regional Aug. 7-11.
