State’s Attorney files charges against woman for alleged voter fraud
Suspect releases statement in response
By Dee Longfellow FOR THE BENSENVILLE INDEPENDENT
On Friday, June 25, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that on Monday, June 21, his office filed multiple charges related to election fraud in the 2021 municipal election against Susan Cain, 64, of Wheaton. The charges are the result of investigations conducted by the State’s Attorney’s Office into more than 30 cases of
alleged election fraud since the November 2020 general election. While most of those cases have been closed without charges, the charges against Cain represent the sixth active case. On June 21, Judge Michael Fleming issued a $1,000 personal recognizance arrest warrant for Cain. Two days later, Cain turned herself in at the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and was released from custody. She has been charged with three counts
Inside:
of Forgery and four counts of Perjury in Election Code, all Class 3 Felonies. It is alleged that on four occasions, Cain completed an online application to vote by mail using the name of another DuPage County resident. It is further alleged that on three occasions, Cain signed the names of three of those residents on the ballot envelope prior to the ballots being mailed.
Cain’s alleged actions were discovered by the DuPage County Clerk’s Office who turned their finding over to the State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecution. On Tuesday, July 6, Cain released the following statement: “As many did during the COVID-19 pandemic, our family participated in the vote-by-mail process for the April elections,” said Cain. “In a good faith effort to do the
right thing, well in advance of the election, we self-reported challenges that we encountered during that process. We thank those who have continued to provide support and well wishes during this time, and hope our experience serves to strengthen the Illinois vote-by-mail process in the future.” Cain’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, July 26, in front of Judge Brian Telander.
