Public Works holds open house Village celebrates $30 million upgrade to water treatment plant

The Bensenville Public Works Department hosted an open house on Saturday, July 8 to celebrate the completion of a $30 million upgrade to the water treatment plant and publics works facility at 717 E. Jefferson St. Residents and curious out-of-towners alike were welcomed to the expansive ‘yard’ for food, games, a raffle and guided tours of the various departments that make up Public Works.

Kids could climb into the drivers seat of fire engines as well as front-end loaders, dump trucks, excavators and other Village vehicles as part of the on-site ‘Touch a Truck’ event. Staff grilled hot dogs and handed out free water, lemonade apples and granola bars.

Demonstrations such as, what happens when a water main breaks — and how it is fixed — were held during the 4-hour event. On hand to greet guests and answer questions was the staff from the various departments that make up Public Works, including Forestry, Streets, Water, Fleet & Building Services, Wastewater, Stormwater, Engineering and Emergency Management as well as administration.

There was a document shredding truck at the gate, duck races, giveaways and an Arbor Day tree planting.

“I knew we needed to host an open house event once the facility was completed,” Caracci said, “But I didn’t know how much work the event would take.”

The dominant feature of the newly upgraded facility is the excess flow clarifiers -- giant pits designed to treat wastewater. This facility, attached to Public Works and located at 711 E. July 5, 12:05 p.m.in the 300 block of W. Irving Park Road, a complainant reported that he tried to stop a vehicle that was leaving the parking lot because he believed than an occupant of the vehicle stole his wallet while they were inside the restaurant. The vehicle struck him when he stood in front of it. He received minor injuries when he fell off the hood of the car. The car was last seen traveling south on Mason. Security cameras did not show any interaction between the complainant and the occupants of the vehicle who were inside of the restaurant prior to their contact in the parking lot. This case is under investigation.

BV17006631 July 2, 1:26 p.m. in the 100 block of Bernice Drive, a complainant reported she wired $1,000 to Mexico to get her nephew out of jail.

The complainant later learned her nephew was not in jail and is unaware as to whom she sent the money too. This case is under investigation. BV17006593 July 1, 9:40 a.m. in the 300 block of Evergreen St., a complainant reported that an unknown suspect broke the passenger side window of his vehicle. This case is under investigation. District 88 Board honors staff doctoral degrees During its June 12 meeting, the District 88 Board of Education, along with the District 88 administration, recognized and congratulated the three administrators listed below, who recently received their doctoral degrees.

against a West Chicago man allegedly opening fire on an occupied vehicle late last week. Jose Cardenas, 26 of 328½ High Street, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $200,000 with 10% to apply. In all, Cardenas faces one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon (Class 1 Felony), one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Cocaine (Class 1 Felony), one count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – Heroin (Class 4 Felony), one count of Possession of Cannabis (Class 4 Felony), two counts of Possession of a Weapon by a Felon (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Possession of Ammunition by a Felon (Class 3 Felony).

Detectives with the West Chicago Police Department began an investigation into allegations that at approximately 3:48 a.m., on June 10, an unknown vehicle approached a vehicle with several occupants and shot at the vehicle several times. Through the course of their investigation, Detectives identified Cardenas as a suspect in the shooting. Cardenas was taken into custody from his place of work without incident. The Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon charges stems from the allegations of the shooting on June 10. All other charges stem from Cardenas’ arrest on June 15.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

‘This is government at its worst’ McSweeney says of earmarks State Rep. calls out Republican Senator who supported veto override ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK An Illinois state representative is criticizing the $36.5 billion budget bill passed by the General Assembly this week for including hundreds of millions of dollars – at least – in earmarks for projects in lawmakers’ home districts.

Rep. David McSweeney said he was particularly curious about an earmark in Sen. Dale Righter’s district. Righter was the only Republican senator to vote Tuesday to approve $5 billion in tax hikes as part of a $36.5 billion budget. Without Righter’s vote in favor, the tax hike bill would have failed.

“He was the deciding vote for [Speaker] Michael Madigan’s massive tax increase,” McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) said. “And

specifically, there’s a very curious line item in the budget.”

McSweeney was referring to an earmark of more than $4.8 million for Eastern Illinois University for remodeling of the HVAC in the Life Science Building and Coleman Hall, upgrading the electrical distribution system, and renovating and expanding the Fine Arts Center.

The spending was included in an amendment that was a late addition to Senate Bill 6, the budget bill that passed Tuesday morning with no vote to spare.

“This is government at its worst,” McSweeney said. “You have an amendment that was added at the last minute. Nobody knows what’s in it. And then Michael Madigan’s

favorite senator decides to vote for the tax hike.”

Messages left for Righter at his Springfield office, his district office in Mattoon, as well as his mobile phone were not immediately returned.

The amendment itself is more than 600 pages long and appears to include hundreds of similar projects totaling at least in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Other earmarks in the legislation include $12.7 million for construction of a new classroom building at the Grayslake campus of the College of Lake County, in Rep. Sam Yingling’s district; $10 million for construction of a city center campus at Joliet Junior College in Rep. Lawrence Walsh’s district; and $15 million for a Chicago Metra station in Rep. Greg Harris’ district. Harris crafted Madigan’s budget in the House.

Moody’s Financial Service warned Illinois lawmakers that the 32 percent income tax increase and spending plan they approved would not be enough to guarantee Illinois won’t be downgraded to junk status. That would mean much higher costs for state borrowing.

On the other hand, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) says now that there is a budget, hundreds of canceled road projects can begin again.

“Essentially, contractors are free to resume work at any time now,” IDOT spokeswoman Kelsea Gurski said.

But there’s also the reality that a budget for the next year doesn’t do anything for Illinois’ old bills.

“In terms of being able to determine when, and if, we will receive the remaining categorical payments for FY17, we really have no idea,” Galesburg Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Hamm said.

Hamm’s district is one of hundreds of schools still waiting to be paid for costs from last year to operate things like school buses and special education programs.

Those schools will likely have to wait even longer. Skillicorn said a recent court order is going to force Illinois to spend money it doesn’t have on medical bills for the three million people in the state on Medicaid.

“Our fiscal situation has gotten worse in the last 30 days, not better,” Skillicorn said. “We have a judge that’s ruled we need to start paying off our Medicaid bills, and that’s going to take up an excessive amount of our cash flow.”

Reaffirming her support for families with children suffering from a rare autoimmune condition, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, urges the governor to sign House Bill 2721 to require insurance providers to cover the treatment for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders associated with Streptococcal infections and Pediatric Acute Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANDAS/PANS).

“I urge the governor to sign House Bill 2721and make Illinois the first in 50 states to require insurance companies to provide care for children with PANDAS,” she said. “When a child is suffering from a life-threatening illness, parents should be able to provide that child all the treatment and attention necessary without having to fear the possibility of financial hardship.”

PANDAS/PANS is an abnormal autoimmune response to a common strep

infection affecting approximately 1 in 2,000 children in the United States.

Symptoms include anxiety, severe changes in personality, separation anxiety, deterioration in handwriting skills, phobias that develop suddenly, and motor or vocal tics that mimic Tourette syndrome or seizures.

Conroy’s House Bill 2721, an initiative of local parents, ensures that all individual and group insurance plans cover PANDAS/PANS treatment. The legislation received bipartisan, unanimous support in the House and Senate. The House and Senate also unanimously concurred on Senate Amendment 1, renaming the Bill “Charlie’s law” to honor Charlie Grobe Drury’s fight against PANDAS. “PANDAS/PANS is completely treatable, but treatments and medications are expensive and the financial impact of a PANDAS/PANS diagnosis cannot be understated,” she added.

“This bill ensures that families won’t have to wait any longer to give their children the treatment they need.”

Bus 9 to Paradise is on the summer reading list We have piles of books around here and my Prince and I often love to share with each other what we are reading and also sometimes like to read the same book so we can discuss. We are currently reading Bus 9 to Paradise by Leo Buscaglia. This book is from 1986 and is timeless.

Leo was a professor at University of Southern California. When one of his students committed suicide, he was moved to create a new course called LOVE. This non-credit tuition-free salary-free course changed the trajectory of his life.

The notes of his lectures became a manuscript for his first book. Someone from PBS heard one of his lectures and then taped one to air on television. Leo’s message and delivery resonated and that launched him as a motivational speaker. He went on to write many books and to deliver many talks.

Leo died in 1998. He said of his Love class: “I taught it free of salary and tuition just so students could have a forum to consider the truly essential things. I really didn’t “teach” the class. I facilitated it - helping the students to discover their own magic.”

where they can bond and get to know each other and play a lot of games together. This is our third year going there. It’s a young group, but they are talented. As the season goes on, we are going to get better on offense and defense.”

Addison Trail will hosts its Blue and White Community Night Aug. 18 from 6-9 p.m. at the high school football stadium.

Attendees will enjoy a showcase of Addison Trail’s sports teams, performing arts, clubs and more. Food and treats will be available for purchase as well.

The event is sponsored by the District 88 Foundation, which raises funds to benefit District 88 students.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and activities commence at 6:30 p.m.

The Addison Trail girls basketball team gained some valuable experience this summer.

The Blazers played in 32 summer games. Addison Trail hosted three tournaments that equated to nine total games played and also played in a summer league hosted by Palatine High School.

The squad left this past weekend for a team camp at Hope College in Michigan where it will play 11 or 12 additional games.

“It’s good to see different competition that we don’t normally see,” said Addison Trail coach Rob Schader.

Schader was pleased with the progress the team made throughout the summer. “We got better as we went along,” he said. “We have a lot of juniors who have not seen a minute of varsity basketball. The seniors we have coming back with the exception of Nicci Scorza, have not played a lot of varsity minutes.”

The Blazers showed signs of improvement particularly on the defensive end.

“At times we did some nice things

defensively. We will have to beat teams by shutting them down defensively,” said Schader. “At times we rebounded the ball very well and other times we didn’t rebound well.

It’s hit and miss. The biggest thing for us this upcoming season will be our ability to score. We have kids who have the ability to do it. The big thing with that is consistency. We have kids who right now don’t have a lot of varsity experience. We’re going to be a work in progress.”

Scorza is the only player returning with significant varsity experience.

“She started and played a ton for us last year,” said Schader. “She’s the one who has good varsity minutes under her belt.”

Berenice Berumen and Angelina Carreras also return with varsity experience. “Bernice is coming back and played some minutes for us last year. She works hard and she’s quick, which helps her out,” said Schader.

“Angelina we pulled up last year and she played five or six games for us at the end of the season and that will help her out as well.”

Schader said the newcomers to the team have enjoyed success at the lower levels the last two years.

“We’re going to be a young basketball group,” he said. “The girls who are new to the team had a really successful season last year as soph-

Addison Trail Sports Camps Addison Trail still has several summer sports camps that will occur in July.

A girls volleyball camp will be held in the main gym for players in grades 4-8 and also for high-school players. The cost of the camp is $80.

The 4-8 camp will run July 17-20 and July 24-27 from 8:30-10:15 a.m.

The high-school camp will run from July 17-20 and July 24-27 from 1011:45 a.m. The Addison Trail girls’ volleyball coaching staff and players will run this two-week intense and fun camp where campers will learn the basic fundamentals they need to be successful at any level.

The boys volleyball camp for players in grades 6-12 will run from July 17-20 and July 24-27. This camp will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. in the main gym. The cost of the camp is $70. The Addison Trail coaching staff runs the camp and it will focus on techniques and concepts for players.

The Addison Trail summer theatre camp runs from July 31-Aug. 4 with a performance to be held Saturday,

Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. This camp is open to students in grades 6-12 and the cost is $50. The camp will allow students to get a hands-on experience in theatre. Students can choose between acting or working on the technical side. Students will work on acting, building, painting, lighting, sound and costumes. A sort play will be produced at the end of the camp.

The Addison Trail spirit cheerleading camp will be held Aug. 3-4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the balcony of the gym. The cost is $50 for the camp. AT’s cheerleading squads and coaches will provide campers with two days of fun and spirit.

Campers will be divided by age and learn cheer skills, including jumps, basic tumbling, cheers and basic stunting. On the last day, campers will perform their routine for family and friends and will all be invited to perform at a home football game.

Snacks, a camp T-shirt and a picture are included. Open to students in grades K-9.

The Elmhurst American Legion Post 187 Muddogs’ regular season hit the home stretch with a pair of recent games against Mt. Prospect and Round Lake.

In a 7-6 loss to Mt. Prospect Post 525 at Plunkett Athletic Complex

in Elmhurst, the visitors scored two runs in each of the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. Mt. Prospect upped its lead to 6-0 at one point. Elmhurst scored four runs in the sixth inning for the final margin.

Post 187 had 10 hits, limited its foe to five hits, but made six errors in the field.

The Willwobrook Athletic Booster Club presented its award winners and scholarship recipients for the 2016-2017 school year.

Casey King was named the outstanding male athlete, while Valentina Poggi was named the outstanding female athlete.

Grace Chantos was named the Helen Carpenter most valuable female athlete, while Jon Kelso was named the John A. Fischer most valuable male athlete.

Athletic Booster Club scholarships were awarded to King, Chantos, Kyla Denwood, Grace Guthrie, Dominic Ranieri and Luke Halloran.

Lauren M. Kiefer memorial scholarships were awarded to Zachary Walenga, King, Julia Holden, Mike Dembowski and Makena Walsh.

DiNella plays for the Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team. She is the 15th player, fifth sophomore and first goalie in the school’s history to earn the honor.

DiNella, who also earned all-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, led the MIAC in save percentage at .947, goals-against average (0.92), winning percentage (.813) and most shutouts with eight.

DiNella helped Gustavus finish third in NCAA Division III this past season.

In 22 games (19 starts), DiNella went 14-4-2 with a 1.16 goalsagainst average and a .944 save percentage to go with the previously mentioned eight shutouts.

Schmidt at Northern Illinois Former Willowbrook softball standout Sam Schmidt completed her sophomore season for the Northern Illinois University softball team.

Schmidt played in 48 games (43 starts) and had 24 hits and 19 runs scored. Of those 24 hits, four were doubles and four were home runs.

She finished the year with 19 RBI and walked 10 times. Schmidt also was a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen-base attempts and had a .939 fielding percentage in 180 total chances.

Northern Illinois finished the year 33-21 overall and went 15-6 in conference play.

Schmidt was a three-time all-conference player at Willowbrook who earned all-state honors her senior year after setting school single-season records for batting average (.583), RBI (51) and home runs (16).

Round Lake led 2-1 after the first inning and 3-2 after three innings.

The Muddogs had a doubleheader with Frankfort Post 1977 scrapped this past weekend that was scheduled for Main Park in Frankfort. One of the games, that will count as an 11th district conference game, was slated to be made up this past Monday at Plunkett in Elmhurst.

Elmhurst was 10-6 heading into that final makeup game against Frankfort. Elmhurst had a 6-1 11th district record heading into the final Frankfort makeup.

Post 187 is scheduled to open up 11th district playoff action today at the Wheaton College Field located behind Carol Stream Post 76. Wheaton Post 76 is the host of the district tournament and the 2nd division tournament that follows.

Pizur at North Park Former Willowbrook baseball star Matt Pizur is a pitcher on the North Park University baseball team.

Pizur pitched in 12 games this spring and started 10 contests. He went 2-2 in 68 2/3 innings of work.

Pizur struck out 56 batters and walked only 21.

Pizur struck out eight batters in a game against Carthage College and fanned seven in contests against Wisconsin Lutheran, Wheaton College and Carroll University.

IC Catholic Prep places 13 on spring all-conference lists Nearly 70 studentathletes earn all-academic honors

IC Catholic Prep had 13 student-athletes earn all-Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division honors for the spring season.

In girls’ soccer, seniors Tessa Langan and Tess Reardon, junior Grace Fuller and sophomore Olivia Hurt were named to the all-conference team. Those four helped the Knights reach the state semifinals.

Senior Trey Morris and junior CJ West earned all-conference honors in baseball.

Senior Jordan Rowell along with juniors Kris Askew and Tim McCann earned all-conference honors in boys’ track. Sophomore Jaida Smith earned all-conference accolades in girls’ track.

Senior Kaitlyn Falduto, junior Josie Lytton and sophomore Kayla Faber-Cournane were all-conference selection in softball. Those three helped the Knights reach the final eight teams in Class 2A. The Knights also had a plethora of student-athletes earn all-Metro Suburban Conference academic honors for the spring season.

Golf clubs or fishing poles?

Summer brings out two vastly diverse species of sports persons wielding sticks, and I’m not referring to hockey and lacrosse. I’m talking about fishing poles and golf clubs.

While not impossible, it is a rarity to find a golfer who enjoys the rigors of fishing and vice versa. If you happen to do both, good for you, but by and large fisherpersons fish and golfers golf; that is the way the world was created.

Logistics demand it. Both sports require patience and time, lots of time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to both fish and play golf. So one must choose. To golf or to fish: that is the question, unless you need no sleep, but most of us do.

Along with being time hogs, the two activities share a number of commonalities.

The first is money. Both sports can get expensive if you are going to dive in hook, line and sinker. You’ve got to have the right equipment and dress the part. For a fisherperson this can involve a lucky shirt, lucky hat, a rod, reel, bait, tackle box, life vest and boat. For a golfer it often includes one glove, lots of clubs, even more balls, double that on tees, a visor, special shoes, a polo shirt, goofy looking pants or maybe knickers and a golf cart, if you are really serious about the sport.

say) a propensity to perhaps exaggerate one’s abilities and success on the green or on the water are also par for the course. The way this is demonstrated differs between the two, however. With golf, the scores inexplicably inch lower while with fishing the inches of “the one that got away” grow higher.

Both involve water. Fisher folk are on the lake. Golfers can be in the drink. With golf, the aim is to put a tiny ball into a tiny hole. With fishing it is to put a big fish into your big boat, or dinghy, if your boat’s not that big. Size matters to fisherman, but only when it pertains to the size of the fish. Size isn’t as important in golf. Accuracy and power of drive lead to success or maybe even a hole in one.

Both activities give you access to fresh air. They involve patience and a steady hand, and all it takes is one great shot or one great catch to make the entire day, well, great.

Golfers and fisher peeps are known for their litany of excuses when things don’t go as hoped.

The wind shifted, the sun was in my

eyes, too many clouds, wrong ball, wrong bait, a bad hook, lost my ball in the drink, lost my lure in the lake.

Or sand trap, sand bar, lousy swing.

Lousy cast. Lousy weather.

The sports also share some of the same terms, albeit with different meanings. Golf involves the dreaded worm burner. Some fisher folks dread the worm baiting.

In golf a hook is a bad thing. In fishing it is a sharp thing. In golf a birdie is a good thing. In fishing it is a flying thing that may or may not be in competition with a fisherperson for said catch of the day– especially if it is an eagle or albatross.

When fishing you hope to catch a lunker. With golf you hope to avoid the bunker.

Golfing and fishing, they are as different as they are the same. And they give us a reason to get outside and enjoy a tiny hook or a tiny white ball, depending on your preference.

And, despite the many comparisons, there’s one difference between golfing and fishing that cannot be overlooked: No matter how hard you try, you can’t eat golf balls for dinner.
