On Tuesday, May 29, the Independent received a press release from DuPage County containing the following message from Dan Cronin, Chairman, DuPage County Board: “In DuPage County, our goal is to create a business-friendly environment,” the statement read. “We keep taxes as low as possible and we are equally aggressive when we seek to attract new companies as we are when we nurture and retain existing businesses.

And now, I believe a new, countywide collaboration will bring additional economy opportunity to our residents.

“Together with the College of DuPage, Choose DuPage and the Village of Glen Ellyn, we’ve launched Innovation DuPage, a small business incubator that will foster young companies and attract entrepreneurs looking to take their business innovation to the next level. The Board of Innovation DuPage (ID) held its inaugural meeting in May, and work is underway to transform the former Glen Ellyn Police headquarters building into a co-working space that will house this unique center.

“Each of the partners in this collaboration brings enthusiasm and important contributions to the companies and entrepreneurs they will serve. The Board has created a robust business model and a strong governance structure. Their various elected Boards (COD, DuPage County and the Village of Glen Ellyn) are supportive of this venture and Innovation DuPage is well on its way to becoming THE place in our County where young businesses go to grow.

Spirito! Singers celebrate 10 years of harmony, 10 years of song “I remember the first time I heard those angels sing! They took my breath away.” “This singing actually brings tears to my eyes- they are that gorgeous!” “We work so hard and sound way better than I ever imagined possible. I LOVE being part of Spirito!”

These are a few of the ways audience members, and the singers themselves have described Spirito! Singers, a chorale located in the Chicago western suburbs. With passion, dedication and exceptionally high standards, Spirito! began in 2008 with founder and Artistic Director Molly Lindberg’s vision of creating an all-girl, youth chorus of the highest caliber.

Now in its 10th season, what began as a chorus of 50 singers, one conductor and one accompanist can now boast 230 singers, 18 instructors/ accompanists who work out of five rehearsal locations, 123 alumnae and a solid reputation as a quality organization.

Where it all began A long time Elmhurst resident now living in Hinsdale, Lindberg is a graduate of University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor School of Music and has sung professionally with many choirs including the Chicago Symphony Chorus. She had originally envisioned an all-girl high school choir but soon realized that what Spirito! had to offer

was unique and could benefit younger singers as well. In its second season, a 5th -8th grade choir was added with additional emphasis on music theory education and training.

“There is a strong choral culture in our area and I knew what we offered would be a wonderful complement to existing opportunities,” said Lindberg.

“In addition to a challenging repertoire, this younger choir has 30 minutes of theory instruction each week spread across 6 different levels. The girls progress at their own pace.”

Spirito! is an auditioned choir comprised of the Ragazze Ensemble- 5th8th grade girls, Bravura Ensemble9th-12th grade young women, and another component—the Men of Spirito!

Men of Spirito! bring new spirit to singing Made up of adult men, ages 18 and older. Lindberg originally formed this as a small singing group of mostly dads who could add some variety to the concerts.

“Turns out they sounded pretty good!” Lindberg said. “The men loved singing together, the audience loved hearing them and the girls loved singing with them. So, they became a permanent fixture. It really does enrich our girl’s experience to sing with male voices in an intergenerational setting.”

The Men of Spirito! ensemble has grown and now has 30-40 singers each

season.

Spirito! has a philosophy of unity and loyalty that is sewn into its very fabric. The group motto is, “We have no bench!” While rosters are formed based on a successful audition, once in the choir there is an environment of high expectations with no internal competition between singers.

“Our young women hail from 51 schools crossing 27 communities around Chicago, but when we are together we are ‘One Voice-One Team,’” said Lindberg. “I want our girls to feel safe when they are here. There is a real bond, a kinship between our girls. A sisterhood.”

Community service emphasized Service is also an important part of the Spirito! experience. In addition to four major concerts in May and December, Spirito! sings at numerous events throughout the season. “Our concerts are wonderful, but I also want our girls to be out in the community and to directly see the impact their singing can have on people.” Along with events like the Elmhurst Cycling Classic, Relay for Life, Dan Gibbons’ Annual Turkey Trot, Downers Grove Music Club Rising Stars Awards, the Elmhurst Memorial Day Observance, Spirito! also has sung the National Anthem for the White Sox and Bulls.

Much of the service outreach takes place at Spirito!’s Service Sundays.

Grandpa pops in for a surprise following Honor Flight

Surprises can be hard to pull off but it happened on Monday, May 7. Seventh grader Mikey Rowland (left) got a big surprise after his grandfather Dick Rowland took an Honor Flight to Washington DC with other veterans recently. Mikey’s class wrote letters to his grandpa, who was in the Army SP-3, Ninth Infantry Division, 42nd AAA Battalion in Germany. They surprised him with them on the flight home from Washington. He was so touched, upon his return he popped in to surprise Mikey and his classmates and tell about his experience.

Hot May breaks records across Illinois ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK

If you thought last month was hotter than normal, you were right.

Cities across Illinois and the state as a whole experienced the hottest May in recorded history.

Illinois’ a long state. It’s usually warmer in Cairo than in Rockford. But, as a whole, state Climatologist Jim Angel said Illinois hasn’t seen a May with more days of above average temperatures.

“The statewide average temperature for the entire month was 70.6 degrees, 7.9 degrees above normal for the whole state and the warmest on record,” he said.

Many cities saw the same situation.

“In Quincy, Springfield, Champaign and Carbondale, every day was at or above normal for this time of year,” Angel said.

Other cities like Rockford were close but had a couple cool days that lowered their average.

A warm May doesn’t necessarily mean June, or July for that matter, are guaranteed to see hotter-than-normal temperatures, Angel said, but June is forecasted to be warmer than normal.

‘Just for Kids’ fishing derby June 10 at Blackwell

DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba will begin to issue electronic tablets to jail inmates beginning in early June.

The use of these tablets saves taxpayer dollars by employing an electronic means to replace and enhance services currently provided by physically removing an inmate to special service areas such as, educational and religious class, as well as providing for video visitation.

The tablets also provide instant communication directly from jail staff to an inmate and provides individual options to pass the time while awaiting trial or serving their sentence which decrease the anxiety of incarceration causing less friction between inmates and staff.

The use of the tablet will allow additional educational opportunities and informational materials not yet in place in an effort to reduce recidivism of an inmate.

The tablets are issued at no cost to either the inmates or to the taxpayers.

The costs are integrated into an inmate’s individual choices of optional access, such as direct messaging to family members provided by the tablet service provider—all of which are vetted by corrections administrative staff.

Direct internet access and social media sites will be restricted and unable to be accessed.

The use of electronic tablets in correctional institutions has been proven to provide a better environment to both inmates and jail staff. Studies have shown the integration of tablets results in less incidents of inmate disturbances, as well as a reduction of paper and loss or misinterpretation of communication between inmates and jail staff.

Additionally, a reduction of inmate movement within the facility and contact with contracted jail service providers provides a safer and more efficient environment for both inmates and staff while reducing the costs of incarceration for taxpayers.

Local man’s heart is with the next Rock ‘N Wheels band Talking Heads tribute band Big Suit to perform at June 14 community event

dison’s Rock ‘N Wheels event on Thursday, June 14 at the new Village Green by Addison Village Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Rock ‘N Wheels offers car show for your vehicle If you have a custom, classic or antique car of bike, you are welcome to bring it to the car show that takes place where Army Trail Road deadends into Lake Street. The street is open at 6 p.m. and closes when capacity is reached. Pre-registration is not required and space is limited, so arrive early.

The band, Pearl Jam Tribute Chicago, which is normally a headliner, will open for Big Suit beginning at 6:30 p.m. Big Suit takes the 95.9 The River Stage at 7:30 p.m. The evening includes nine food vendors who bring concessions for $5 or less.

While in the area, walk over to visit the Addison Historical Museum and the Arts & Crafts Fair.

The second week of Rock ‘N Wheels will feature a band that is near and dear to the heart of Angelo Sorce, special events coordinator for the Village of Addison.

“The band … formed at my request to do a tribute to a band no one imitates -- the Talking Heads,” Sorce told the Addison Independent. “Last year I asked Deacon Blues, a Steely Dan tribute [band], to do this for me and they loved the idea.”

After that, the band Big Suit was formed has been getting booked regularly in some renowned music performance venues in Chicago.

“Now, thank me profusely, as they are getting booked in the best houses, such as the Park West, Riv, the Vic and Onesti’s Arcada.”

PBIS Barbecue On May 2, the Addison Trail Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) team hosted its annual end-of-year barbecue. The PBIS program was implemented in fall 2007 to teach students expected behaviors, rules and what it means to be a Blazer. The goal of the program is to develop a positive school climate through creating common language and standards. The barbecue is a time to celebrate improved behaviors at Addison Trail and is an opportunity to communicate behavioral data for the year not only to the staff, but to the students as well. Each year, the program recognizes acts of “Blazer Pride” with a personalized card and a cookie, and this year the PBIS team streamlined the cookie nominating process. The group also worked to get more underclassmen involved in PBIS. Meet Addison Trail’s class of 2018 graduation speaker

On May 20, Addison Trail senior Karlie Hagopian addressed about 450 of her classmates at Addison Trail’s 52nd commencement ceremony.

Despite rain, floods and a broken water main, ITJH 8th graders graduate Indian Trail Junior High School 8th graders did not have an easy path to their promotional exercise this year.

Tuesday, May 29 became the last day of classes for 8th graders when a water main broke outside the main entrance to the junior high at lunchtime. This caused administrators to cancel classes for all IT students on Wednesday, which was scheduled to be the last day of class for the 8th grade students.

In spite of the fact that students were not at school and didn’t have the opportunity to travel over to Addison Trail High School to rehearse, it was decided that the graduation ceremony would be held as scheduled on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, a huge rainstorm occurred and flooded streets all over Addison, making it challenging for students and families to get to the high school. The start time of the

ceremony was delayed in order to give students time to get into place.

Despite the setbacks, 462 ITJHS students crossed the stage to receive diplomas and accept congratulations from members of the ASD4 Board of Education.

ITJHS Principal Craig Bennett congratulated the students, wished them well in their future educational endeavors, and thanked their parents for their support.

Inspired to enter the competition

by Addison Trail World Language Department Head Erica Craig, Hagopian had learned Craig was the student speaker for her high school graduation, and she wanted to achieve that goal as well.

A 2018-19 State Scholar, Hagopian received State Commendation toward Biliteracy recognition in

Karlie Hagopian, who served as the student graduation speaker during Addison Trail’s 52nd commencement ceremony on May 20.

Spanish, which is awarded to graduating high school students who have demonstrated significant progress toward achieving a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language.

During her time at Addison Trail, Hagopian has been a member of the Girls Volleyball Team and the Girls Soccer Team, and she also played at the club level in those sports. She has been involved with Student Council, Math Team, Key Club, National Honor Society and Blazer Ambassadors as well.

Hagopian plans to attend Loyola University Chicago, where she will study to become a nurse.

“What I’ve learned most from Addison Trail is no matter what life throws at you, you can handle it,” she said. “Everyone at the school is here to help and support you. As I will mention in my speech, all the teachers, coaches and staff members at Addison Trail – along with our family members and friends – give us the tools and pieces we need to be successful. But it’s up to us to put those pieces together to form our future and who we will become.”

Willowbrook baseball team reaches sectional final Warriors finish season with 20 wins; Nilles hits walk-off homer in semifinals

The Willowbrook baseball team had its strong postseason run stopped with a 6-0 loss to Lake Park in the championship game of the Class 4A Bartlett sectional.

Willowbrook was the No. 6 seed

in the Bartlett sectional, while Lake Park was the No. 8 seed. Lake Park had previously upset No. 1 sectional seed St. Charles North to reach the sectional.

In the game against Lake Park, the Warriors trailed 1-0 after three innings and found themselves down 5-0 after four innings thanks to the Lancers scoring four runs in the fourth inning.

Addison Trail softball team makes progress

Addison Trail softball coach Mark Olson liked what he saw from his players during the 2018 season.

The Blazers finished 11-16 overall and went 3-9 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

“I thought our effort was there throughout the year,” said Olson.

“We did a great job playing well in the second half of games. That’s when we came alive and won. Sometimes it was a little too late.”

Addison Trail placed Sophia Hawkins and Vincenza Zaccaro on the all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division team.

“Sophia is only a junior and is now a three-time all-conference selection and will be back one more time for us,” said Olson.

“Vincenza is a two-time all-conference player and is leaving us.”

Zaccaro is one of three Addison Trail players who will continue their softball careers at the college level. Zaccaro and teammate Gianna Trippiedi are headed to Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, while Katie Lacni will play at Goshen in Indiana.

“Three girls moving on to college is a positive thing for us,” said Olson.

Olson saw consistent progress throughout the spring. “We improved in all facets of the game,” he said. “Pitching-wise we cut down on the freebies (walks) and we cut down on our efforts on offense. I liked that we put the ball in play and made things happen. We were good at making adjustments and we would end up winning the fourth, fifth sixth and seventh innings. We always were battling out there.”

Olson noted his team trailed Hoffman Estates 20-11 at one point in their non-conference game. “We scored nine runs in the seventh inning to send it to extra innings,” he said. “That shows you the type of team we were this year.”

Olson also is excited about the program’s pitching future. “We won’t have to replace 100 percent of our pitchers’ innings next year,” he said.

“We had a whole new staff this year and now the girls who are coming back are good.”

Olson is encouraged by the progress sophomores Dakota Zimmerman and Elizabeth O’Brien made in the pitching circle. “They pitched 85 to 90 percent of our innings,” he said. “The girls threw strikes and it’s good that we have that coming back.”

Olson also liked the progress freshmen Anna Ruffolo, Isabel Aramburu and Jessica Krause made. “Those three freshmen stood out for us,” he said. “Anna played shortstop and started every game for us.

Izzy is an outstanding defensive catcher with an incredible arm and Jessica played second this year and will move to third next season.

They played every inning for us and did what we asked. They were standouts.”

And now the Blazers will turn their attention to 2019. “We have solid pitchers. They are girls who throw strikes,” said Olson. “If we can play defense that will keep us in games. We’re going to have a hard time replacing five solid seniors in the batting order. It will be an interesting year next year.”

Willowbrook reached the sectional final after recording a 6-5 win over neighbor Glenbard East in one semifinal at Bartlett.

Glenbard East scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but Willowbrook came right back and put up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Glenbard East tied the game with a single run in the fourth inning.

til Willowbrook came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Willowbrook needed all of one atbat in the bottom of the seventh to win it. That’s when Nilles led off the inning and belted a 1-0 pitch over the fence for a game-ending home run to right field.

Willowbrook worked its way out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning. The first Glenbard East batter was hit by a pitch on a 1-2 count.

The second batter reached on a bunt single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. The next hitter flew out to right field for the first out.

The Warriors were able to get out of the inning thanks to a fielder’s choice double play that was scored 6-4-3-2.

With a runner being thrown out at the plate and the original batter being

thrown out trying to advance to second on the fielder’s choice play.

Tumilty went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Jack Hines went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sam Pelsor had two hits in three at-bats. Scott Tumilty scored a run. Mason Kamp went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk. Jaloszynski hit a grand-slam home run. Gusel Jr. went 1-for-3 and Nilles had the solo home run to end the game. Sam Tumilty’s hit was a double. Vince Ruchala had a sacrifice.

Dax Meyer picked up the win. He went the distance, allowing seven hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked only one and threw 70 of 99 pitches for strikes.

Willowbrook finished the season with a 20-15 record. The Warriors won three of their final four games.

IC Catholic Prep softball team reaches final eight in state Josie Lytton named conference player of the year

The IC Catholic Prep softball team concluded its season by finishing as one of the top eight teams in Class 2A. The Knights dropped an 8-0 game to Beecher in the Class 2A Seneca supersectional. IC Catholic Prep was playing in the round of eight for the second year in a row.

Beecher, the 2017 Class 2A state champion, finished second in the state this year, losing over this past weekend to Taylor Ridge Rockridge 5-2 in the title game.

IC Catholic Prep also played Beecher in the round of eight last year.

“We just got beat,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Frank Reaber. “The wind was blowing in and we went up against a rise-ball pitcher. We got down by three or four runs and we only had two hits in the game.

They had a girl hit a three-run homer. When you are not hitting there is not a lot you can do. We only had two hits against the rise-ball pitcher. It was close at three runs and then they started getting a run here, a run here and another run. That changes what you can do.”

Reaber said the combination of wind blowing in and a rise-ball pitcher led to a lot of balls being hit in the air.

“Everything was in the air,” he said. “The wind was killing it. Josie (Lytton), Dani (Murillo) and Kayla (Faber-Cournane) were crushing the ball but the wind held it up.

The flags were blowing in. It was a weird situation. They beat us. They were the better team that day. They beat us a second year in a row. We could have lost to the state champions the last two years (Beecher finished second this year).”

Despite the loss, Reaber stressed the importance of the team’s tremendous run throughout the season. IC Catholic Prep finished 26-6 overall.

In addition to winning regional and sectional titles, Lytton was named the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division player of the year. The Blue Division is considered the upper division of the MSC in terms of the larger-enrollment schools being housed there.

“Overall, we had a great season,” said Reaber. “Josie being named the player of the year in the upper division is great.”

Joining Lytton on the all-MSC Blue team were teammates Murillo, Faber-Cournane, Rebecca Cash (a freshman) and Emma Lytton. “We had five kids make all-conference,” Reaber noted. “It’s a really good year. It was a tough way for us to end the year just like last year.”

Josie Lytton and Hannah Wagner are the two seniors graduating off the team. “Josie will be a big loss for us,” said Reaber. “But everybody else is coming back and hopefully they all will step up even

more.”

Reaber was proud of the fact his team was an offensive force throughout the season. “We hit the ball well all season except for Monday (against Beecher),” he said. “It’s not that we didn’t hit it well against Beecher, but the wind held everything up. Brooklyn Campos hit a line drive over the second baseman’s head. She missed it and it landed 10 feet in back of her right to the right fielder. Everything was being held up by the wind. We had no room for error. Everything we hit was in the air. The one ground ball we hit went for a base hit and we only had two hits in the game.

The girl we faced had a good riseball with good movement and we got everything up. We got beat.

The girls played very hard but we got beat.”

Reaber said getting the team to the round of eight for the second year in a row is “a big deal.”

“But you want to get downstate.

We were good enough to go. We just got outplayed in that game. If we play them five times, one team is going to win three and one wins two. They got us down 3-0 in the fourth inning and it slowly got away from us. The kids started trying to get the big hits and we had to realize we needed to go one run at a time. It was tough. The girl hits the three-run shot in the bottom of the second and there is no wind and then the wind starts blowing in during the third inning and it changed the game.”

Fenton softball team wraps up 2018 season

While the scoreboard didn’t indicate it, Fenton softball coach Dave Mello noted his squad played well in its 10-1 loss to Chicago Whitney Young in the regional semifinals.

“The game was much closer than the score indicated,” he said. “The team as a whole really performed well in the regional. We had a couple of mistakes that made the score look much worse than it really was.”

Fenton ended the year 14-22 overall and went 1-11 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play.

Individually, Rose Riley led the team in batting average this season at .485 and also was tops in on-base percentage at .551. Isa Lozada was the team leader in hits with 46 and also was tops in doubles with 10. Ri-

ley led the team in triples with seven, while Lozada was tops in home runs with five and RBI with 29. She also led the team in runs scored with 48, walks (17) and stolen bases (21).

“Our offense really improved as the season went on,” said Mello. “We put up a lot of solid offensive numbers.”

In the pitching circle, Gianna Mendoza was tops in wins with four. Ashley Mitchell was tops in saves with two and strikeouts with 49. Cynthia Ibarra had the team’s lowest ERA at 4.04.

“I really liked how close the team was,” said Mello. “They were really there for each other the entire season.”

of our offensive stats, those two kids put together quite the seasons at the plate and they did a great job taking care of the left side of our infield.”

Mello said he was pleased with how the season unfolded and is looking forward to even more progress next spring.

“We really performed quite well,” he said. “Our conference is extremely tough and we also play some really good teams on our non-conference schedule. The future of the program looks really bright. Our five seniors really did an amazing job of showing the four freshmen and five sophomores we had on varsity what it takes to be successful. We have some high goals for next season and are very excited to work toward achieving them.

We feel we can compete for a conference title and a regional title.”

Elmhurst junior American Legion baseball team kicks off season

The Elmhurst Post 187 junior American Legion team got its season kicked off on the right foot recently.

Post 187 traveled to the Danville tournament where it opened up play with wins against Decatur, Piat County and Rantoul.

In a 5-1 win over Decatur Post 105 at Wabash Park in Rantoul, Elmhurst scored two runs in the top of the first and followed with three more in the top of the fourth. The Muddogs had 11 hits.

Alexis Cotto went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Tyler Gelsomino had a hit and a run scored.

Jose Alvarez had two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Joe Orrico had two hits and an RBI. Jack Ryan had a

hit and an RBI. Alanzo Howard had a hit, while Andrew Pietrucha had a hit and a run scored. Ryan tripled in the game. Cotto, Alvarez and Orrico each stole a base.

Cotto was the winning pitcher.

He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and one earned run, while striking out seven. Michael Hilgart pitched the final 2/3 of an inning.

Post 187’s U17 team then downed Piat County Post 39 by a 10-0 count in five innings in another game played at Wabash Park in Rantoul.

Elmhurst jumped on Piat County immediately with five runs in the first inning and four more in the second.

Post 187 had 10 hits.

Gelsomino had a hit and two runs scored. Pietrucha had a hit and a run scored. Cotto scored two runs and walked once. Alvarez had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Orrico had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Massimo Cortez had a hit, an RBI and three runs scored to go with a walk.

Nathan Kriz had a big game, going 3-for-3 with five RBI. Nick DeSimone had a hit and an RBI. Kriz doubled. Post 187 stole six bases, led by Kriz’s two steals.

Gelsomino was the winning pitcher. He allowed two hits over five innings and struck out five.

Post 187 followed up the Piat County win with an 11-8 victory over Rantoul Post 287 at Wabash Park.

Elmhurst overcame a 6-0 deficit heading into the top of the fourth.

Post 187 chipped away with a run in the fourth, but then found itself down 8-1 heading into the fifth inning.

“I see us going pretty far with the team we’ve put together,” said Biondo. “I can see us going to the regional but I think the Legion state tournament definitely can happen. Regionals are in reach and anything is beyond that is even more of a success.”

Post 187’s senior team is part of a district setup that also features Lake in the Hills, Wheaton and Elgin. Post 187 will play the majority of its games at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst with other games scheduled for Aurora and at Madison Meadows in Lombard.

The Post 187 senior Legion team was scheduled to open the season earlier this week with two home games against Mt. Prospect Post 525 and Arlington Heights Post 208. Post 187 is scheduled to hit the road today for a rematch with Arlington Heights in a game played at historic Rec Park in Arlington Heights.

Elmhurst is slated to play Elgin Post 57, Pirates Baseball, Wheaton Post 76 and Lake Zurich Post 964 this week.

The Lake Zurich game will be played tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Madison Meadows Field 18 in Lombard.

The 11th District tournament is scheduled to begin July 17, while the 2nd Division tournament is slated to begin July 23.

The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for continuous quality improvement.
