Montini Catholic students make third service trip to Nicaragua

Montini Catholic High School in Lombard recently held a very special Commissioning Mass. The Mass, celebrated by Pastor Father Jeff Stoneberg of Christ the King Parish, was held for the students and chaperones preparing for their Nicaragua Mission Trip, which was completed on June 18.

It was the third year for the trip to the garbage dump in Nicaragua.

Montini, under the direction of Campus Minister Michael Blanchette, teamed up with International Samaritan for this life-changing service trip and is very proud to be globally involved through its service learning program.

“And, the King will answer, In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me,” read Father Stoneberg in his homily address, quoting Matthew 25:40.

“What we give we get back in grace.

This trip is a wonderful part of your life’s faith journey.”

The school’s first “global mission” occurred in June of 2015 when they sent a team of nine to work with the garbage dump community in Nicaragua. The group helped build a house for a single mom and her eight children.

“It was such a powerful experience, a life changing experience,” said Blanchette, who has been instrumental in helping Montini Catholic’s service ministry to go global.

International Samaritan is an organization that serves victims of severe poverty in developing countries by partnering with them and others to alleviate hunger, homelessness, endemic disease and ignorance. The mission of this organization is to build homes for single moms, and support educational programs for the children.

Nybo urges lawmaker support of introduced ‘Capitol Compromise’ budget proposal Following a press conference hosted by Republican lawmakers last week introducing their “Capitol Compromise”—a package of bills that composes a bipartisan-compromise balanced budget with newly-added structural reforms— Senator Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) publicly voiced his support for the proposal and is urging all state lawmakers to return to Springfield to review the bills and end Illinois’ ongoing budget impasse.

The comprehensive proposal includes a truly balanced budget, a four-year hard spending cap, lasting property tax relief, and changes to Illinois’ regulatory system that will create jobs and grow the economy. The bills also include a $250 million increase for the new school funding formula and fulfilling commitments to restore child-care eligibility to 185% of the federal poverty level and a wage increase to Direct Support Professionals. It also includes term limits on legislative leaders and constitutional officers.

“The ‘Capitol Compromise’ my Republican colleagues presented today is a truly balanced, comprehensive, full-year budget that incorporates the critical budgetary and structural reforms the State Senate was negotiating during the spring legislative session, which were unfortunately missing from the Senate Democrats’ go-it-alone budget,” said Nybo. “This proposal is by name a genuine bipartisan compromise. It includes President

Cullerton’s pension reform legislation, many of the priorities in the Senate Democrats’ school funding legislation, and now provides lasting property tax relief for Illinois residents and substantial workers’ comp reform to incentivize businesses to grow in Illinois. We’re nearing the finish line. It’s time we return to Springfield to finish the job our constituents elected us to do.”

The summary of the bills are as follows: • Budget Bill: Comprehensive budget proposal that includes real spending cuts and a four-year spending cap, while providing funding to state agencies like the Department of Human Services to care for our state’s most vulnerable and the Department of Transportation to continue important infrastructure projects.

• Property Tax Relief: Four-year freeze for all taxing districts, but would allow residents, through voter referendum, to lower or increase their taxes. Allows for an exemption on existing debt service payments as requested by Senate Democrats.

• Local Government Consolidation: Strengthens and improves the already passed SB 3, and will allow for citizens-initiated consolidation on units of local government.

• Education Funding: Changes to the K-12 education funding formula that treats every district equitably that is consistent with the

Tom Cullerton outraged at NIU pay off

State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) is outraged at the latest golden parachute payout at Northern Illinois University.

News released recently outlines NIU’s plan to pay President Doug Baker $600,000 plus benefits when he steps down later this month in the wake of the Illinois Inspector General’s investigation into illegal hires made by the university.

“As students across the state of Illinois are struggling to pay tuition and fees, our public higher education institutions are handing out golden parachutes to disgraced administrators for violating taxpayers’ trust,” Cullerton said. “What message are we sending? This needs to stop now. Illinois needs to get out of the business of paying university administrators off for their mismanagement and failing to comply with state laws.”

Under the deal, Baker will receive a full year’s salary of $450,000 and $137,000 to not serve as a member of the College of Business faculty.

He also will be paid up to $30,000 for his “reasonable, unpaid expenses for legal counsel” related to his time at NIU. “It is simple. If you mismanage state funds, you should not be rewarded,” Cullerton said.

The Inspector General’s report was publically released on May 31.

The report details hires made by Baker and his administration that

were paid contracts over $20,000, which are supposed to be subject to competitive bidding in accordance to state law.

The jobs were incorrectly classified to get past the requirement according to the report.

The Chicago Tribune went on later to report that two of the nine employees involved in the hiring scandal made more than $400,000 for 15 and 18 months of work.

In the midst of the state’s budget impasse, NIU announced in May they will be eliminating and reducing 150 staff positions, which included 30 active employees.

The active employees will have to transition to open positions across the university, exercise their civil service employment rights within their employment classifications or have contracts that will not be renewed.

“We are in the middle of a budget impasse. Every dollar, every penny, needs to be put toward the betterment and education of our children,” Cullerton said. “This deal is a betrayal of taxpayers’ trust. State dollars should not be used to line the pockets of failed administrators. ” Cullerton is calling for tougher regulations to stop state universities and community colleges from paying out administrators while under investigation or found guilty of university mismanagement.

Illinois superintendents in uncomfortable spot with proposed tax increases part of budget plan ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK A number of Illinois school superintendents who can’t or won’t ask their taxpayers for more money are wholeheartedly behind a plan to raise taxes on everyone in the state.

Hundreds of Illinois school superintendents are loudly demanding that lawmakers pass a budget.

But they are a lot more quiet about the $5.4 billion in tax increases that are at the center of the Senate budget plan on the table in Springfield.

Illinois school leaders say they need their money. Some say they may not be able to stay open all year next year. They want lawmakers to pass a budget.

But the heart of the Sen-

ate-passed budget includes $5.5 billion in tax increases.

Superintendents such as Ralph Grimm from Galesburg said taxpayers can’t be asked to pay more.

“I’ve said to our local board, ‘You are about where you need to be [on taxes]’,” Grimm said. “I’ve told them a local property tax increase should be one of the last things you look at.”

But Grimm was one of about three dozen superintendents at the Illinois Capitol last week pressing lawmakers for a new state budget.

He’s not alone in asking lawmakers to do what he won’t or can’t.

Sandoval Schools Superintendent Jennifer Garrison asked local

taxpayers for more money last year.

They said no.

“Locally, we did try to do a sales tax to bring in more revenue,” Garrison explained. “It failed overall.”

Andrew Nelms with Americans for Prosperity in Illinois says it’s telling that superintendents know their taxpayers are tapped out, though they seem to be OK with state lawmakers asking taxpayers for more.

“Schools account for roughly 60 percent of all property taxes statewide and that figure rises to north of 70 percent in many suburban communities,” Nelms said. “These folks have already taxed their residents to the hilt and are now de-

manding that beleaguered Illinois taxpayers forfeit more money to Springfield.”

Various national studies have concluded Illinoisans pay among the highest property taxes in the country and shoulder the heaviest overall local and state tax burden of all the U.S. states.

Indian Prairie schools Superintendent Karen Sullivan said her local taxpayers in Naperville and Aurora already pay their “fair share” and don’t want to pay more. That leaves her trying to thread the needle on the 32 percent income tax increase included in the budget approved by Senate Democrats.

“We’re not taking a position on

a tax increase or a property tax freeze, or any of that,” Sullivan said. “Our position is that we need a budget.”

Nelms said many of the superintendents who are pressing for more state money, including Sullivan, collect hefty public paychecks. He suggests they look to cut costs before they ask taxpayers to pony up more of their hard-earned money.

“Note that these well-paid superintendents did not hold a press conference to announce any cost-saving measures or offer suggestions to the Legislature about ways to reduce their operating expenses,” Nelms said “They simply demanded more money.”

Cullerton and Palmisano agree school funding changes good for DuPage Schools

State Senator Tom Cullerton passed a series of reforms to help lower Villa Park property taxes and ensure DuPage schools are fairly funded.

Cullerton worked to pass a series of reforms that will lead to property tax savings through government consolidation measures, property tax relief and working to guarantee Illinois schools are funded the right way.

Senate Bill 3, which will spread Cullerton’s bipartisan government consolidation model statewide, passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support.

This measure will allow counties to dissolve certain units of local government through a voter referendum.

“My goal is to save money, re-

duce taxes and make sure government is working for the people,” he said. “The best way to lower property taxes is to put government consolidation decisions in the hands of the people who receive the services. This one small step will lower property tax bills and streamline government services.”

Cullerton supported Senate Bill 1, which will help schools such as Villa Park School District 45, Queen Bee School District 16 and U-46, which have been shortchanged for decades under the existing education funding formula.

These districts could soon see a significant increase of funding to level the playing field with neighboring school districts but not at the expense of other schools. No school district in Illinois will lose

The increase in funding to schools passed by the Senate this legislative session will work toward giving schools in need of extra support based on an evidence-based model that accounts for factors such as students with disabilities and low-income students.

Superintendent Anthony Palmisano, Villa Park School District 45, joined superintendents, school administrators and educators across DuPage County and Illinois to support Senate Bill 1.

most critical to ensure all students have the tools necessary to succeed,” Palmisano said. “The funding initiatives attached to Senate Bill 1 consider the best teaching practices associated with ensuring those tools are available to all - the students, families, and educators not only in our community but in all communities across the state.

On Wednesday, June 7, at about 8 p.m., the Independent received a tip that a hostage situation was underway in the 200 block of Plymouth in Villa Park. A witness Timothy saw a large group Jackson of police vehicles surrounding a residence and viewed one officer walking toward the house with a M-16 rifle.

As it turned out, the incident was not in fact a hostage situation but rather, a person of interest in two other criminal investigations who had barricaded himself inside the house.

He was not holding hostages.

The incidents in question allegedly occurred on the 900 block of West North Avenue in Villa Park, detectives said. One involved the unlawful discharge of a firearm on June 6 and the second, a robbery that occurred on May 29. The person of interest was also wanted on an active warrant issued by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a release issued by the Villa Park Police Department, at

approximately 3 p.m., detectives located a person of interest involved in these incidents at a residence on the 200 block of East Plymouth in Villa Park. Upon making contact, the subject refused to exit the residence. Due to the concern that the subject may be armed with a handgun, the NIPAS Swat Team was requested to the scene. The subject continued a standoff and refused to exit the residence after being advised he was under arrest.

The subject eventually surrendered to officers and was taken into custody unharmed. Detectives subsequently served a search warrant on the residence and recovered a handgun and ammunition.

Later, on Thursday, June 8 at about 12:30 p.m., the Villa Park Police released the suspect’s name and mug shot. The suspect Timothy Jackson, 25, of Villa Park, was charged with Unlawful Possession of Weapon by Felon, being a firearm which is a class 2 felony and Resisting a Peace Officer, a class A misdemeanor.

Jackson was transported to the DuPage County Jail to be held for bond court.

The Addison Trail High School spring sports teams featured no shortage of success stories in and out of the classroom.

In girls badminton, MaryGrace Mutia, Kasia Czepiel and Sandra Cosio were named to the all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division team, while Cosio, Athena Kakolires, Atsumit Flores, Jacqueline Deniz and Nicolet Bachmeier were named to the all-academic team.

In baseball, Nick Villasenor, Simon Marinelli and Trevor Fulmer were all-conference selections, while Villasenor, Marinelli, Mitch Gomez, Juan Cantu, Bobby Daniels, Anthony Biondo, George Neri and Ricky Perez were all-academic choices.

In boys gymnastics, Alex Kominowski, Jeremy Crespo and Carlos Alvarez earned all-conference honors.

Montini holds First-Step Social for incoming freshmen New friends were made and anxieties calmed on Friday, June 9th at Montini Catholic High School’s First Step Social and Barbecue welcoming their Class of 2021.

“Our tradition of welcoming new freshmen with food, fun and fellowship is enjoying its fifth year at Montini,” said Admissions Director, Kim Richmond. “Montini students act as ‘ambassadors’ and volunteer their time to welcome their newest peers to the school. They also help provide advice, and answer questions ranging from “how do I prepare for college?” to “what time is lunch?”

“You decide your own fate,” said the event’s facilitator, Mr. John Donahue-Grossman who is an inspirational storyteller and former Director of Retreats at Lasalle Manor Retreat Center. “You decide how your four years of high

school will go! Meet new people and get involved!” Grossman has been working with Montini Catholic in welcoming their freshmen for many years. He also leads the Freshman Day of Retreat held at the end of the school year.

Montini Catholic’s First Step Social is the first opportunity for freshman to begin building class spirit and to get to know their fellow classmates and future friends.

Willowbrook summer baseball team looks to keep spring momentum going Warriors 3-3 through first six games

Willowbrook summer baseball coach Vic Wisner is seeing the continuation of some common traits that have defined the program during his tenure.

“I like how the kids who are seniors-to-be have stepped up in leadership roles,” he said. “Kids such as Mason Kamp and Dan Gusel have really stepped up for us.”

Willowbrook was 3-3 overall through late last week. The Warriors lost two games to Plainfield East, swept a doubleheader from Glenbard South, was winning 3-1 against York when bad weather hit and lost 8-6 to

Downers Grove North.

“Our pitching continues to be good,” said Wisner. “We’re trying to find our identity right now. We lost a lot of our top hitters from last year.

We lost our first six hitters to graduation with Ben Espinoza, Jon Kelso, MJ Ranieri, Kyle Ferguson, Mike Dembowski and Alex Michaelson.

But we also have guys back such as Trevor Jaloszynski and Mason Kamp who will help us. Mason hit well for us this spring in a part-time role.”

Wisner lauded the recent performances of Scott Tumilty in center field and Jeremy Conforti at third base.

“Those are up-and-coming guys,” said Wisner. “We have kids who will step up. If you look at last year’s team, guys such as Ben Espinoza, Alec Michaelson and Mike Dembowski had less than 12 at-bats as juniors and then they come out their

senior years and hit .400. You never know. Our hitting is pretty good right now. If we can score a few runs we will be in every game because we will throw the ball well.”

Willowbrook’s pitching staff includes Jack Nilles, Ryan Mintz and Jack Hines. “These guys can throw the ball,” said Wisner. “Trevor Jaloszynski will pitch more and Vince Ruchala was outstanding in relief this spring. He had 16 appearances as a reliever and did a great job.”

Gusel and Marshall McDonnell, the team’s two catchers from the spring, also are back.

Willowbrook had another solid spring after last year’s summer success where it won 24 games in a row at one point after losing its first three games.

The Elmhurst Post 187 American Legion baseball team split a pair of recent games.

The Muddogs were 6-2 winners over Highland (Ind.) Post 180 at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The game was tied 2-2 until Elmhurst scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final margin. Post 187 had 10 hits in the game.

“They had a left-handed pitcher who threw very well,” said Post 187 coach Mike Biondo. “He kept a lot of hitters off-balance. And then in the sixth inning we broke

They see kids before them and the way they played and the experience they had. They see college kids returning, which shows how much they care about the program.”

Wisner noted he has somewhat cut back on the number of regular-season games in the summer.

“We’re trying to make it as easy as possible for the kids,” he said. “We have them a couple days and then they play with their travel teams. We share the kids really well. We have a very good relationship with the travel programs here such as the Lombard Lightning and T’s Academy.”

Willowbrook was scheduled to play Leyden, Metea Valley and Hinsdale South this week.

On Thursday, June 22 from 6-10 p.m., Addison’s “Rock ‘N Wheels” concert and festival will take place on the Village Green, 1 Friendship Plaza, east of Village Hall.

IC Catholic Prep names Nissen athletic director Comes from Mount Carmel High School in Chicago

Since 2006, Nissen has served as a teacher and coach in both private and public school settings, ICCP noted.

In a news release, IC Catholic Prep Principal Pamela Laver cited Nissen’s “energy, enthusiasm and professionalism” as some of the key attributes that led to his selection as the school’s new athletic director.

“We welcome Adam to the IC family and are incredibly excited to have him lead our athletic department,” she said. “He is student-centered, which will allow us to continue the positive momentum going forward in

our athletic programs.”

The school’s news release noted that Nissen recognizes the opportunity to be part of a close-knit school community.

“I’m looking forward to joining ICCP because of the strong Catholic values, the emphasis on character development in their students and a mission that promotes molding independent thinkers that will be leaders both in and out of the classroom,” he said in the release. “I’m a firm believer in holding both the student athletes and coaches at ICCP to the

highest standards in order to achieve not only athletic success, but also success in building better people.”

Nissen previously was a social science teacher, assistant athletic director and assistant football and track coach at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. Prior to his arrival at Mount Carmel in 2014, Nissen spent five years at Urban Prep Academy for Young Men in Chicago, teaching a variety of social-science classes and serving as the school’s history department chair. While at Urban Prep, Nissen was named teacher

of the year and staff member of the year for three consecutive years from 2011-2013.

He also spent three years at the Youth Connection Leadership Academy in Chicago where he taught history and subsequently became dean of students. He holds a master’s degree in inner-city studies from Northeastern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree in secondary social science education from the University of Iowa.
