Willis sheds light on Assistive Technology Program Working to ensure constituents are accessing the resources they need, State Rep. Kathleen Willis (D-Addison) is bringing awareness to the assistive technology program, which offers loans to purchase assistive technology, such as hearing aids and wheelchairs, for people with disabilities.

“Families are often burdened with having to purchase costly assistive technology equipment to function in their daily lives; equipment they oftentimes cannot afford,” she said.

“When there is a resource or program in place to help combat some of these expenses, I want to ensure people are aware of it.”

Statute of limitations to be eliminated for sex crimes against children If passed, no predator will go free just because time is up

A package of bills that would eliminate the statute of limitations for sex crimes against children recently passed the House of Representatives, according to Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park).

“No child sexual predator should be allowed to go free simply because of the statute of limitations,” she said.

“We know that it is not uncommon for victims to take decades to come to terms with the sexual abuse that they endured as a child.

“The damage that sexual predators do to innocent children does not go away after a few years, and neither should the ability to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Conroy said. “It is our job to make sure that we are doing everything in our power to ensure the safety of the children in our communities.”

County offers free recycling of latex paint to residents DuPage County is hosting a Latex Paint Recycling Program at the County’s Woodridge Greene Valley Wastewater Treatment Facility. Residents can drop off their usable, unwanted latex paint during designated summer collections free of charge.

The County will accept latex-based paint that has not been frozen, is less

than 10 years old and has not been mixed with other products.

While commercial entities can pick up the recycled paint, drop off is limited to residents. Paint from businesses, contractors or commercial entities will not be accepted.

The Woodridge Greene Valley Wastewater Treatment Facility is

Villa Park man arrested at Cubs game for child exploitation

Registered sex offender allegedly points small camera at boy at urinal

A Villa Park man was arrested

by Chicago police at last Saturday’s Cubs game at Wrigley Field for sexual exploitation of a child.

The man, Nichols J. Gregor, 37, of the 300 block of No. Ardmore in Villa Park, had a history of crimes against children, according to police.

According to early reports, Gregor pointed a small camera in the direction of a young boy who was standing at a urinal in a rest-

room at Wrigley Park. The police reports said Gregor was carrying the camera in the crook of his arm and stood next to the youth at the urinal, hiding the Nichols Gregor camera with his coat while it was aimed at the boy.

Records indicate Gregor served a six-month prison sentence in

2010 for an incident in which he was allegedly using a video recorder to capture images of young boys in a bathroom of a swimming pool in St. Charles.

At that time, child pornography had reportedly been found in Gregor’s home at the time. He was on the “special sex offender probation” list for 30 months after his prison sentence.

On Saturday, June 4, Gregor was detained at Wrigley Field in the stadium’s right field holding cell until police arrived.

Democrats attempt second override of union arbitration bill

Two days after the Illinois House of Representatives failed to override the governor’s veto of a controversial binding arbitration bill, Democratic state Rep. Chris Welch wants to try again.

Welch filed the second “motion to override” of House Bill 580. On Wednesday, the House voted on the same question and it failed by two votes.

The measure is supported by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, which is at loggerheads with Gov. Bruce Rauner over the terms of a new contract for approximately 35,000 employees of state government.

The union and Democratic legislators also backed a nearly identical bill in 2015, Senate Bill 1229. That bill also failed to gain enough support to override the governor’s veto earlier last summer.

HB 580 would take contract negotiations out of the hands of Rauner and instead let a panel of unelected arbitrators decide terms of the state’s next contract with AFSCME. Rauner has said passage of this bill could cost taxpayers billions of dollars. Research shows that arbitrators often side with unions.

On Thursday, seven Republican lawmakers sent a letter to Rauner and Roberta Lynch, executive director of AFSCME, calling on them to return to the bargaining table. “It is abundantly clear that the continuation of this stalemate will continue to hurt all interested parties,” the letter states.

The letter is signed by Reps. C.D. Davidsmeyer, Sara Wojcicki Jimenez, Norine Hammond, Terri Bryant, Avery Bourne, Don Moffitt and Adam Brown.

On the AFSCME website, Lynch posted a letter that asks those seven lawmakers to support reconsideration of the veto attempt.

But Jimenez told the Illinois Radio Network that the letter and the binding arbitration bill are separate. She voted against the override attempt on Wednesday and said she does not support the request for another vote.

“That doesn’t actually bring both sides back to the table. That would allow for the arbitrator to come in. So it’s not the same subject,” Jimenez said.

Since July 2015, AFSCME and the state have entered into three tolling agreements. These bind the union and the governor to continue negotiating in good faith until either a contract is reached or impasse occurs. The Illinois Labor Relations Board has been considering since January whether the negotiations between the state and AFSCME are at an impasse.

If an impasse is declared, the governor could implement his contract terms on the union. And if that were to happen, Lynch has indicated AFSCME could strike.

Gardening with the boys We spent most of the weekend gardening, and I’ve come to an important conclusion. Some people are born with green thumbs. Others, including the guys I live with, are simply all thumbs – and not a one of them is green.

I needed help with mulching. I consider it a heavy task and was hoping to put their muscles to work.

They were more than happy to oblige and their attitudes were terrific. A few minutes after they started, mine was not.

They lugged the hefty bags with ease, but found it difficult to distribute the mulch without pouring it all over the top of my tender plantings.

They were so effusive in their work they covered entire plants with the mulch, leaving me to dig for leaves so my plant friends could live to see another day.

Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE When I admonished them about being careful around the plants, they gave me a serious look and then went about their business – of covering more plants with mulch.

And then it started to sprinkle.

Sprinkle. An extremely light, barely tangible, you’d-hardly-notice it sprinkle. I was in the front yard – working. My hair was a bit damp, but the precipitation was miniscule.

Refreshing, actually, if you were

sweating. Which I was.

I finished my task and walked over to where the boys were supposed to be busy mulching. Not a one was in sight. I wasn’t buying the disappearing act and went in the house. There they were: on the couch in front of the TV. Without a smidgen of guilt, they announced they were on a “rain delay.” My jaw clenched and I expended much effort refraining from saying something I might later regret.

My attitude remained far from terrific.

I went outside to continue “our” work. On the way, I shut the door in a non-gentle fashion. I hoisted one of the mulch bags over my shoulder and placed it in position. I opened the bag and poured, pure adrenaline pulsing through my veins. By the time I grabbed a second bag, they

had joined me in the backyard, obviously knowing their very own supper most likely hinged on their helping me in a loving manner.

I said nothing, but accepted their “help.”

My boys have big muscles, but they also have big feet, and this was never so obvious as when they attempted to tiptoe through a freshly planted bed whereby the plants themselves seemed to attract those monstrous feet like a magnet.

Squish. Some of those unfortunate plants didn’t stand a chance under my son’s 12DD. They displayed an absolute inability to discern a weed from a wanted plant. To their credit, this often takes people years of practice, but after they pulled up the fourth (blooming) pansy, I requested they withhold their “help” in this area. Not sure yet

if the pansies will make it. My fingers are crossed.

To be honest, they do their best.

And they are interested and engaged – in their own way. Last year we grew cayenne peppers – of the heatedly hot variety. My boys were keenly fascinated – in determining who could eat the most peppers without throwing up. I won’t divulge here who won, but it’s safe to say this will probably be an annual contest.

At least it will continue this year.

The cayenne pepper plant is one of the few they didn’t stomp on or cover with mulch. True story.

Age spots, they are what they are

ometimes I get a bit contemplative when I drive. The alone time with thoughts can make a person ponder all kinds of things. Like the new tiny brown spot on my right hand that I just noticed.

It’s not chocolate. It’s not a beauty mark, a birthmark, or a scar. It’s an age spot. Oh my!

A different kind of small brown dot, a mole, has lived on the lower center of my left hand, near my wrist, for as long as I can remember. This new fellow on my right hand just showed up and has me wondering if he’s bringing his friends with. As I study my hand, I see the veins now too. Were they always this visible?

My fingers look a little wrinkly and my hand does seem to be screaming out for a dose of luxury lotion. I can’t do that, because I’m driving. There may not be laws against applying lotion while driving, but I am just not that coordinated.

I turn my hand to be palm up and study it for a bit (while watching the road of course, officer.) The lifelines there don’t seem to be any different from when I wondered about them as a teenager.

I don’t know a life from a baby line to a money line, but the lines look the same as ever. My palm side up is familiar; the backside of my hand looks more like a mom hand or a grandma hand. I am both. It is MY hand.

fist, all is well. If I extend my fingers straight out, wrinkles and creases show up that say, yep, elephant. Tiny miniature elephant wrinkles.

It is so crazy to be caught off guard like this. Just a couple songs ago, I was singing along with Taylor Swift (“we’re young and we’re reckless….), knowing that I might look foolish to sing such a lyric when my hair is gray and my hands are on the steering wheel at ten and two (except when I’m flipping my right hand over to analyze it) clearly indicate that young and reckless would not be words anyone would use to describe to me.

Even so, young is in the eye of the beholder.

One minute I am thinking that we never really feel “old”, even though my birth certificate was issued fifty years ago, and obviously I am old enough to be Taylor’s mother. Yet when it’s a beautiful day and you’re driving with the windows down and the radio cranked a person feels youthful and care free.

And the next moment, you see a spot on your hand that doesn’t lick off.

So maybe this is what it is like to

feel old? I am indeed feeling kind of a little bit … fascinated….as I fixate on that age spot. Why does our skin get spots? How spotty will I be?

Should I draw a constellation on my hand and name it?

The mind wanders as the miles roll on. I don’t feel bad about aging, or the spots. It is what it is. The sun is shining. I’m still here. I do what I’ve always done. Turn up the radio a little louder and sing along.

Man shot during attempted robbery in Elmhurst Victim, 27, hospitalized; four suspects flee, still at large

Last week, the Independent learned that an attempted armed robbery had taken place at about 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, on the 200 block of First Street.

According to a release issued by the City of Elmhurst and Police Chief Michael Ruth, police investigated the Attempted RobberyShooting incident, which took place in the parking lot at 257 E. First St. in Elmhurst. A male subject reportedly approached a 27-year-old male victim in an attempt to rob him. Subsequently, the vicitm was shot in the hip and was transported to Loyola Medical Center by Elmhurst paramedics.

Neighbors reported hearing a loud noise, “Like a shot or a dropped dumpster.� They also noticed an ambulance arriving on the scene and later, leaving.

Le Tour de Shore coming June 17-18 Le Tour de Shore is a 2-day, 100 mile charity recreational bike ride from Chicago to New Buffalo, MI benefiting Arts for Kids at Maywood Fine Arts. This year’s route starts with a stroll through the new Maggie Daley Park...and ends at City Beach New Buffalo, Michigan.

Le Tour de Shore History In early 2004, after ten years of driving cars to family vacations in Union Pier, Michigan, goods friends and average cyclists, Lois and Ernie Baumann, and Kay and Steve Cough-

lin, challenged each other to ride their bicycles from Chicago to Union Pier.

So, in June 2004, with scant maps and no cue sheet, our baby boomer foursome discovered a 80 mile, 2-day scenic adventure. The thrill of this accomplishment (plus saddle sore amnesia) inspired the creation of Le Tour de Shore, a Charity Bike Ride from Chicago-to-Michigan.

In June 2005, 33 cyclists join Lois, Ernie, Kay and Steve in the inaugural LTdS (75 miles, 2-days Chicago Buckingham Fountain to New Buf-

falo, Michigan). In June 2006, 67 cyclists rode 95 miles, 2-days from Chicago Millennium Park to Warren Dunes, Sawyer, Michigan. In 2007, LTdS grew to 133 cyclists! Over 200, in 2010. Over 300, in 2012, Over 400, in 2014. Fun is contagious. In 2015, nearly 500 cyclists enjoyed the lakefront and duneland trails of the Chicago Southshore, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park, and southwestern Michigan “Harbor Country.”

The Michigan Fiber Festival is one of Michigan’s largest fiber festivals and is held in beautiful Western Michigan at the Allegan County Fair Grounds. The Michigan Fiber Festival is a fiber arts celebration that promotes the interests of individuals and businesses related to natural fibers.

This year’s Festival workshops begin on Wednesday, August 17 with four full days of classes covering all things fiber related including fiber producing animals and their management and care. The Festival begins on Saturday, August 20 and runs through 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 21.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Festival and promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 100 vendors displaying. There are fiber animal shows, a fleece competition, handspun yarn competition and a fiber art show. There will also be food booths and musical entertainment. There are on-going demonstrations throughout the Festival on shearing, herding dogs, spinning and weaving.

Addison Trail softball coach Olson happy with 2016 season Napoli, McMahon earn all-conference honors

The Addison Trail softball team’s win-loss record was not the most sightly this season.

The Blazers finished 8-21 overall and won a pair of West Suburban Conference Gold Division games.

But coach Mark Olson said records need to be thrown out the side window when assessing his team’s efforts this spring.

“My goodness, we made unbelievable progress,” he said. “It was the greatest thing to see. It was a great group of coachable young la-

dies. We didn’t see it in the win column, but we saw it in the progression we made and everything we accomplished. It was great to see.”

Olson fielded a younger team this season. “We knew going in that we would have some growing pains to go through,” he said. “We still had a good season. I really thought the attitudes of the girls and the way they approached every play was great.

The approach was great throughout the season and heading into the playoffs. We saw good things from our pitchers. We’re not at that point yet where we have that dominant pitcher. We still have to try and get 21 outs in the field. We played some new girls at new positions. We only had three varsity seniors. We know we will have a good group coming back. It’s nice to have the returners we do so we can hit the ground running.”

Olson said an important factor going forward is the development of pitchers Ally Polhad and Marie Baumgartner. “A key will be Ally’s development from a pitching standpoint and the same with Marie,” he said.

Addison Trail graduated seniors Nicolette Napoli, Alyssa McMahon and Julia Liace.

“It’s going to be a challenge filling the shoes of Nicolette and Alyssa,” said Olson. “You talk about leadership with those two. Nicolette is more of a vocal leader and a person who brought a positive attitude.

Alyssa leads by example. She has a toughness to her and gave us a lot of life. She is a fun player. Julia helped as well. She had a tough role coming in and doing the little things on the base paths. She’s another girl who had a positive attitude and set a great example for the younger kids.

Coach Gillie (assistant coach Steve Gilliam) and I were talking and we probably haven’t seen that great of senior leadership in our 20 years coaching together. Their legacy will be shown in two or three years in what this group will do. We’ll see those dividends.”

Olson said he had so much fun coaching this Blazers group. “It was a lot of fun,” he said. “At our banquet you would have thought we won 30 games. We had such great chemistry. The girls meshed well and got along great. This was a group that wanted to continue to go out and learn. We were getting comments from umpires and from other teams’ parents on how hard our girls played. That’s all you can ask for.”

Polhad, a freshman, and classmate Sophia Hawkins made immediate contributions at the varsity level for Olson.

“You are talking about 15 yearolds getting thrown right into the competitive fire and they were tremendous for us,” he said.

Napoli and McMahon earned allWest Suburban Conference Gold Division honors. Olson also lauded the efforts of players such as Jessica Bach, Nicolette Scorza, Baumgartner, as well as Gianna Sarli, Katie Lacni, Vincenza Zaccaro and Gianna Trippedi.

“Jessica played another solid third base for us as a junior,” said Olson.

“She will be a three-year starter next year. Nikki Scorza batted cleanup and played second and a little first and had some great growth. Gianna (Sarli) came out of nowhere for us.

And played well. Marie stepped up for us as a pitcher and we had a ton of sophomores contribute. A lot of girls got a lot of valuable experience this season.

Saving the best for last

Addison Trail’s Carr-Jones reflects on his state track performance

In the three to four weeks prior to the Class 3A boys state track and field meet, Addison Trail’s Jordyn Carr-Jones said he was running the 110 hurdles in the low 15-second range.

At the state meet, Carr-Jones saved his best for the most important race. He ran 14.83 in the finals to earn seventh place in Class 3A. Carr-Jones is Addison Trail’s first boys track state medalist since the late 1970s.

“It was absolutely amazing,” Carr-Jones said of the state meet.

“I loved the competition. As a whole, I loved everything about the experience.”

Carr-Jones was pleased with his running in Charleston, but with an asterisk by it. “I felt like I did the best I could, but there still is more I felt I could complete,” he said. “That was some of the best competition I’ve seen all year. It helped push me to where I ended up being.”

Carr-Jones noted he goes into

each race with the same thought.

“Every meet I’m in I think to myself I have to be the best,” he said.

“I made sure I had that mentality at state and sure enough it led me to do what I did.”

Carr-Jones admits the fact he medalled at state took some time to sink in. “I was shocked,” he said. “At first I didn’t understand.

It didn’t hit me what I did until I got back to the hotel.”

Big-stage nerves, he added, also played a role. “I was extremely nervous,” he said. “That’s the most

people I’ve seen watching at a meet all year.”

During races, Carr-Jones said he takes things one hurdle at a time.

“I would say the first thing you have to do is keep enough confidence,” he said.

“And then with every hurdle you think about leaning forward and getting your form down to where it needs to be. I always believe that the competition is way better than I am and I push myself even harder that way.”

This spring was only Carr-Jones’

second season in the sport. “Funny enough, I had a friend back in Bolingbrook who told me to join track,” he said. “At first I was too lazy and then I said let me try this out. Now, I love everything about the sport.”

Carr-Jones, who plans to train over the summer, is using the medal he was given at the state meet as further motivation.

“I look at the medal every day,” the senior-to-be said.

“Hopefully I can change that bronze into gold.”

Wozniak, Betts named Willowbrook outstanding athletes Three Warriors’ girls soccer players earn Chicago Fire academic distinction

The Willowbrook Athletic Booster Club recently hosted its annual senior athletic banquet at Venuti’s Italian Restaurant and Banquet Hall in Addison.

During the event, highlights and successes of each athletic team were shared and Willowbrook studentathletes were recognized for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.

Samantha Wozniak was named the Athletic Booster Club outstanding female athlete, while Lucas Betts was named the outstanding male athlete.

Josie Zabran was the recipient of the Helen Carpenter most valuable female athlete honor.

Matt Rowland was named the John A. Fischer most valuable male athlete.

Athletic Booster Club scholarships were given to Zabran, Rowland, Melissa Johnston, Meghan Koterba, William Degnan and Kyle Martyniuk.

Degnan, Rowland, Emily Isaacson and Will Karcz were named Lauren M. Kiefer Memorial Scholarship winners.

Betts, Bridget Garner, Eugene Ciesla and Danielle Velasquez were the recipient of Susan Jurkonis scholarships. Rowland and Garner earned John Hamann scholarships.

Willowbrook’s JV team won the title with a 116.55 score. Sophomore Matt Smith won the JV all-around conference title.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team places four on all-conference team Knights win 13 games and advanced to regional championship game

IC Catholic Prep’s success in girls soccer was recognized via four players earning a spot on the all-Metro Suburban Conference West Division team.

The Knights placed freshman Olivia Hurt, Tess Reardon, Tessa

Langan and Kaitlyn Grady on the all-conference team.

IC Catholic Prep finished the season 13-8-3 overall and lost to eventual Class 1A state-champion Wheaton Academy in the regional finals.

“We had a great season overall,” said IC Catholic Prep interim coach Tom Schergen, who also is

the school’s athletic director. “I was very pleased with how we performed and what we did. We had a tough draw in the regional against the eventual state champion. We’re a young team. If you look at our lineup in that regional championship game, nine of the 11 girls are coming back. We’re looking forward to next year and building on the youth that we have.”

Schergen saw that youthful roster gel together as the season wore on. “Throughout the year we played more and more as a team,” he said.

“We learned how to move the ball and play together. We learned some important skills and lessons that we know will carry into next year.”

Hurt led the Knights in goals with 21. Grace Fuller added 15 goals.

“The four all-conference players and Grace are some of the girls who really stepped up for us,” said Schergen.

Overall, Schergen likes the direction the program is headed.

“The program is in good shape,” he said.

Survey shows growth in travel to Cuba

Venice ranks as a top ‘Must See’ destination

According to a survey released

by Travel Leaders Group, Cuba continues trending upward in interest among American travelers and is likely to increase further with regularly scheduled air service from the U.S. Survey participants indicating they’d “go immediately” to Cuba if all government restrictions were lifted has risen to nearly 11%, with gains also charted among those who have already been there.

This year’s survey also explored the Top 20 International Destinations, asking travelers to rank their desire to visit each. The top “must see” destination was Venice, Italy, followed by Florence (Tuscany), Rome, London and Dublin, respectively. The survey was conducted April 4 to April 30, 2016, and includes responses from 3,431 consumers throughout the United States.

“Today’s announcement of six U.S. airlines approved for commercial flights to Cuba, beginning this fall, is another major step toward more American visitors in Cuba,” said Ninan Chacko, CEO of Travel Leaders Group. “While Congress has yet to lift all remaining restrictions on travel, it is clear from our survey data that Americans are increasingly considering and booking travel to Cuba, albeit modestly.

“Cuba is such a fascinating and culturally-rich destination that we anticipate continued growth.”

So you’ve seen a snake? No need to panic It’s the time of year when visitors to the forest preserves may encounter snakes, and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County reminds visitors that these animals pose little danger to humans.

“The eastern massasauga is the only venomous snake native to DuPage, and there haven’t been any confirmed sightings in the wild here for 20 years,” said District ecologist Dan Thompson. “Timber rattlers, copperheads and water moccasins live in other parts of the U.S., but they can’t survive the area’s cold winters, so they don’t live here.”

Sightings of the county’s dozen or so species of snakes increase in the forest preserves in summer, as snakes

move across trails in search of food, and on cool but sunny fall days, when these reptiles bask on rocks and along trails to stay warm. Two in particular are often misidentified as venomous.

To the untrained eye, the western fox snake, a common species in forest preserves, bears some resemblance to a rattlesnake in coloration and size. And though it has no rattle, it may mimic rattlesnake behavior and make rattle sounds by rustling its tail in the grass or vegetation to frighten away an intruder. The fox snake is a blotchy brown, can reach up to 4 feet, lives in grassy environments and eats rodents, frogs and sometimes birds.

The northern water snake, a common inhabitant near lakes and

streams, if often misidentified as a water moccasin. Though water snakes do become aggressive when handled, they pose no danger to people and will usually flee if startled.

They can reach about 4 feet, vary in color from brown to brownish-black and spend their time basking in the sun and hunting for small prey like fish, frogs and crayfish.

Other species common in the preserves are the eastern garter snake and the midland brown snake. Garter snakes are active in many environments and have distinctive yellow stripes down the length of their bodies, which can reach about 2 feet.

Midland brown snakes are common but not often seen. They hide in leaf

litter and are well camouflaged by their coloration and small size.

“Midland brown snakes are particularly easy to overlook because they resemble a stick laying on the ground, so trail users need to take special care not to trample or ride over them when cool temperatures make them sluggish,” Thompson said.

“There are about a dozen species of snakes that are native to DuPage County. Generally, snakes try to avoid interaction with humans so most people will never encounter them,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick, District 2.

“If you run across a snake in the preserves, take a moment to enjoy

the experience of seeing a snake in the wild,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore. “They are fascinating creatures and everyone should be able to appreciate their place in the environment.”

Anyone who finds an injured snake should consult the District’s Willowbrook Wildlife Center. Located at 525 S. Park Blvd. in Glen Ellyn, the center cares for injured native species and strives to rerelease them into wild spaces. Staff members answer questions daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 630-942-6200 or willowbrook@ dupageforest.org. After hours, an automated system provides information.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released its annual U.S. Firefighter Fatalities report, which showed that a total of 68 firefighters died while on duty in the United States in 2015. This represents the fourth time in the past five years that the total number of deaths has been below 70. The number of deaths of volunteer firefighters was the second lowest total ever reported (32 deaths).

“For several years, the number of on-duty firefighter deaths averaged around 100 deaths per year, but recently there’s been a fairly consistent decrease in the annual totals,” said Rita Fahy, NFPA’s manager of fire databases and systems. “The 10-year average has now dropped from approximately 100 firefighter deaths to 81.”

The breakdown, who and why Of the 68 firefighter fatalities last year, 32 were volunteer firefighters, 24 were career firefighters, six were employees of federal land management agencies, three were federal contractors, one was an employee of a state land management agency, one was a civilian employee of the military, and one was a state prison inmate.

Overexertion, stress and medical issues accounted for by far the largest share of firefighter deaths. Of the 40 deaths in this category, 35 were classified as sudden cardiac deaths, usually heart attacks, with onset while the victim was on duty. This reflects only one less death than the 2014 total, reinforcing last year’s finding, which showed that the general downward trend in on-duty sudden cardiac deaths since 2007 has stopped. Cardiac-related events accounted for 51 percent of the deaths in 2015, and 42 percent of the deaths over the past 10 years.

“While it’s encouraging to see an overall decline in the number of firefighter fatalities, areas of concern remain, particularly sudden cardiac deaths,” said Fahy. She also noted the significant number of cancer deaths and suicides among current and former firefighters that are not captured in the report that only tracks on-duty deaths.

The firefighter fatality study is made possible by the cooperation and assistance of the United States Fire Service, the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Program of the Department of Justice, the CDC National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the United States Fire Administration, the Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Bureau of Land Management of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
