ficer Patrick Scanlan, who provided life-saving support, with the “Police Medal of Valor” award. This award is given to extraordinary law enforcement personnel who have displayed significant bravery and courage in the face of imminent risk or death.

“As a fellow police detective, it shakes me to my core when another officer is harmed in the line of duty, especially when it’s one of our own,” said Bensenville Mayor Frank DeSimone. “These officers displayed true acts of heroism and our community will remain forever grateful for their dedicated service and courage. Their actions that day and Officer Kotlewski’s positivity throughout his recovery are testament to their characters.

On behalf of the entire village, thank you for protecting our community and congratulations on this incredible, well-deserved award.”

Last fall, the Bensenville Police Department was notified of a domestic disturbance in the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 6. Arriving on the scene first, Officer Kotlewski attempted to deescalate the situation after being invited into the occupant’s home. Soon after, Kotlewski was fired at 10 times by the perpetrator, with 9 penetrating his back, arms and legs, severing his femoral artery.

Other officers rushed him to an area hospital, saving his life.

“Every day, our officers put their lives on the line to protect their com-

munities, walking into situations that may or may not erupt into life altering scenarios. These officers displayed exemplary and heroic actions that day and will forever be remembered for their courage,” said Ed Wojcicki, Executive Director of the ILACP. “We’re honored to present them with this year’s “Police Medal of Valor” award.

After undergoing five surgeries and countless hours of therapy, Officer Kotlewski returned home just six weeks after the incident, receiving a warm welcome from friends, family and the Bensenville community.

County Mental Health Court graduates record number of students Chief Judge Kenneth L. Popejoy announced that the DuPage County Mental Illness Court Alternative Program (MICAP) conducted a graduation ceremony honoring 22 participants in the largest Problem-Solving Court graduation class in the history of the 18th Judicial Circuit.

Judge Paul Marchese presided over the ceremony which was held

live and simulcast via Zoom. Chief Judge Popejoy attended the ceremony along with DuPage County State’s Attorney, Bob Berlin, and DuPage County Public Defender, Jeff York.

The audience included family, friends, prosecutors, defense attorneys and police officers, including the arresting officers of many of the participants.

“I commend the collaborative effort of everyone involved in the MICAP Program,” Chief Judge Popejoy said. “Working together, we can improve participant’s lives and reduce recidivism.”

The DuPage County Mental Illness Court Alternative Program (MICAP) is designed to enhance the quality of life for participants by engaging in mental health and other treatment and community-based

support systems.

These support systems use a problem-solving court model to facilitate new skills leading to a reduction in recidivism and the stigma associated with mental illness.

DuPage County announces 2022 Scholarship Program official school transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a Financial Aid Audit (financial aid award letter), and proof of enrollment in an Illinois accredited institution.

The scholarship award amounts will vary this year from $500 to $2,500 and special consideration is given to students interested in high-technology fields or other occupations in emerging fields.

Applications are available at the DuPage County Department of Community Services Office, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton, or online at www.dupagecounty. gov/CSBG. Completed applications and support documents must be received by 4:30 p.m. May 6.

Assistance available to elderly, disabled voters for upcoming Primary Election

The DuPage County Clerk Election Division has announced that special assistance in voter registration is available to the elderly and voters with disabilities through the division’s office.

The division can assist in the arrangement of voter registration appointments with deputy registrars for the upcoming June 28 General Primary Election.

All eligible registered voters, including those who are physically unable to get to their polling place, are entitled to receive a ballot by mail or in person. An individual may request a ballot to vote by mail up through June 23.

An individual may vote early at the Election Division office, beginning May 19 through June 27 or early vote in person at one of the County’s Early Voting sites, starting June 13, through Monday, June 27.

Polling locations during Early Voting and on Election Day will be equipped with touch-screen ballot marking devices to enable those who

are blind, visually impaired or have limited dexterity to vote privately without assistance.

Additionally, a voter may request assistance with marking their ballot.

At the polling place on Election Day assistance may be given by Judges of Election (one from each political party), a friend or a relative. Assistance with marking the ballot will also be at early voting sites.

DuPage County to host inaugural Community Arts Festival DuPage County will host its inaugural DuPage Community Arts Festival to highlight the importance of arts in our community.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 at the north grounds of DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 Manchester Road, Wheaton.

There will be three stages providing musical acts, along with food trucks and a beer tent providing refreshments.

Local community artists will be showcasing and selling their work throughout the festival.

Groups scheduled to perform during the festival include the headline act, Ides of March, and others including the Orbert Davis Quintet, Muriel Anderson, Ralph Covert and Ralph’s World, Son Monarcas, the DuPage Symphony Ensembles, the Chicago Jazz Academy, Vital Signs, the Road Show Inc. Show Choir, Elmhurst Symphony Chamber groups, and many more, including a visual performance by artist Lewis Achenbach.

DuPage County formed an Ad Hoc Fine Arts Committee to develop the festival as an opportunity to support local artists, many of whom have been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Presale tickets are currently available and cost $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children under the age of 3. A family pass will be available for $50. Tickets bought at the gate will cost $25 for adults, $12 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children under the age of 3. A family pass bought at the gate will cost $60. DuPage County Community Services is offering college and occupational training scholarships for low-income students with high academic potential.

The Community Services Block Grant scholarship supplements the cost of tuition, books, supplies, and other school-related items for a semester or a quarter to offset the student’s needs.

This scholarship is funded and designed in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Lombard man gets 10 years for conspiracy to commit terrorism Three years added for possession of child pornography DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that a Lombard man has entered a plea of guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit terrorism (Class 1 Felony). Christian Frazee Christian Frazee, 27, appeared in court in front of Judge Michael Reidy, who accepted Frazee’s guilty plea and sentenced him to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).

Additionally, Frazee entered a guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography (Class 2 felony) for which he was sentenced to an additional three years in the IDOC to be served concurrently.

On June 1, 2020, Frazee appeared in bond court on attempt terrorism

charges and his bond was at $1 million with 10 percent to apply. On June 30, 2020, he posted bond and was released.

On Dec. 24, 2020, Frazee again appeared in bond court on the child pornography charges where bond was set at $250,000 with 10 percent to apply in accordance with a previously issued arrest warrant. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

During the weekend of May 31, 2020, Lombard police maintained extra patrol as a result of rioting and looting that took place in Chicago, the surrounding suburbs, as well as other major cities across the country.

At approximately 12:27 a.m. on June 1, 2020, a Lombard police officer observed a male dressed in all black wearing a hood, face covering and latex gloves walking near the village hall and then in the direction

of the Village of Lombard municipal campus with a bat hanging from his bag.

The subject, later identified as Frazee, was walking in the direction of the squad cars and employee vehicles holding a lighter in his left hand and a Molotov cocktail in his right hand.

Frazee also had a butane torch lighter and seven additional lighters in his possession.

Frazee was taken into custody at this time and charged with one count of possession of an incendiary device and one count of attempt terrorism.

Both charges are a Class 1 felony.

Through the course of their investigation into the attempted terrorism charges against Frazee, investigators located hundreds of images and videos of child pornography on Frazee’s cellular telephone. On Dec. 22, 2020, a $250,000 arrest warrant was issued for Frazee.

“In June 2020, amid legitimate protests, Mr. Frazee armed himself with a Molotov cocktail, headed towards the Lombard Village Hall and municipal campus intent on terrorizing the community through violence,” Berlin said.

“If not for the vigilance and quick actions of the Lombard Police Department, the situation may have escalated resulting in the loss of property and perhaps the loss of human life.

“Judge Reidy’s sentence sends the message that criminal activity under the guise of legitimate protests is still criminal activity and will not be tolerated in DuPage County. I thank the Lombard Police Department for their truly outstanding work on this case. I thank the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as well as United States Attorney John Lausch and his office for their assistance.”

Frazee will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

It’s not too late to score summer savings at the Bensenville Park District’s Under the Sun camps. Those enrolling in adventure, sports, discovery and teen camps by Friday, May 6, can save $10 per session.

Under the Sun summer camps are made to cater to children’s unique interests.

Each day, campers participate in a wide variety of engaging games, projects, crafts and, of course, swim time at the water park. Camp curriculums emphasize socialization through child-led play which lays the foundation for learning and academic success.

“Camp is all about development through experience,” says Lisa Semetko, program supervisor. “All of our activities are based on the concept of child-led play, so kids are developing their social skills and emotional skills; they’re out in nature getting to know their environment, and they’re just having fun.”

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be dedicated to the 100 Club of Illinois, in support of the families that have lost loved ones in the line of duty.

“It’s a miracle story, really, but another element to why our community remains to be Bensenville Strong,” DeSimone added.

The park district offers three camps that run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays for 6-to-10-year-olds— adventure camp, sports camp and discovery camp. Adventure campers’ days are filled with cool crafts, games, new discoveries about their surroundings and nature exploration in addition to swim time. Sports camps cater to those of all skill levels and focus on fun, good sportsmanship and skill development in hockey, soccer, softball, basketball and volleyball in addition to daily swim time. Discovery campers spend the day exploring historic Fischer Farm with fun adventures Tuesday through Friday each week.

Teen leadership camps allow campers to take on the role of counselor-in-training with a program that emphasizes responsibility, respect and cooperation. Participants aged 11-15 will play fun games, compete in sports and tackle challenges as a team and will have weekly swim time in addition to leading younger campers in their activities. The camp runs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For younger children aged 2-5, the park district offers tot and sunshine camps at the Deer Grove Leisure Center (DGLC), 1000 W. Wood Street, Bensenville.

Tot camps offer a caring and gen-

tile introduction to the camp experience for two-year-olds with a new and exciting theme presented each week. Campers meet in the Nursery Room from 9 to 11:15 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and enjoy nature exploration, vegetable gardening, water play and visits to the splash pad on hot days. They also play games, get messy with sensory craft projects and have story time.

“We enjoy outside and nature— we sing, we dance, we play,” said Cindy Banazynski, the park district’s lead preschool teacher. “It’s a lot of fun. We try to engage with nature with our youngest group in a safe way.”

The sunshine camp caters to children aged 3-5 and is designed to foster children’s growth and independence through exploration, guest speakers, sports, camp songs and playground time in addition to visits to the splash pad. The camps run from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays or Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Tiny Tot Room.

“We are outside as much as possible and want to promote the children’s love and enjoyment of nature,” Banazynski said. “We take turns playing in the sandbox; we run up and down Blackhawk Hill;

we can find all kinds of insects.

Anything that sparks the children’s interest, that’s what we want to do.”

No matter the camp, all camp counselors are trained to provide a positive camp experience for children. The staff is trained in CPR, AED, first aid and behavior management.

All camps begin Monday, June 6, and each session runs for two weeks.

The last session begins the week of August 1. To reserve a child’s place in camp, register in advance at the DGLC with a $25 down payment per session for each child. Each session must be paid in full the Thursday prior to the start of each session enrolled. A pre-camp meeting for campers and parents will take place at the DGLC Thursday, June 2.

Before- and after-camp sessions are also available for children ages 6-15. Before-camp sessions run 7-9 a.m. weekdays and after-camp sessions run 3-6 p.m. Neither these sessions nor tot and sunshine camps are eligible for the early registration discount.

Gratitude in the everyday

Today I was overwhelmed by a feeling of gratitude. This isn’t a given for me at this point in my life.

Sometimes I feel the opposite of gratitude; for that I am sorry.

I have been given much. I have been loved much. My life, for the most part has been wonderful. I was born in a country where much is wonderful and much is taken for granted.

I flip the light switch and my room is illuminated, any time day or night all 365 days of the year. I turn on the faucet and have access to an unlimited amount of clean drinking water. Sometimes I am so entitled I think my clean drinking water isn’t good enough and I purchase water that is purported to be even cleaner.

Showering every day is a given not a luxury.

I have machines that wash my clothes, dishes and floors. I have a reliable car that starts when I turn the key. It brings me to the superstore where I have practically unlimited access to food. This car operates on gasoline. Sometimes I complain about the prices, but I can purchase as much as I want, so long as I have the money or credit card. I have a bed to sleep on every night. It has comfy pillows and blankets. I’ve been sleeping well.

I have a roof over my head. When it rains I don’t worry about getting wet. When it is very cold I have heat to keep me warm. When it is very hot I have air conditioning to keep me cool.

My fridge and cupboards hold more than enough food for me to eat.

I can chose what I eat every day based on what I’m craving or what sounds good. I have the luxury of thinking about diet and exercise and how they can keep me healthy. I have the time to improve both in my life.

And I haven’t touched on the two most important aspects of all: people and nature.

I have friends and family who love me. Yeah, they do and I know it without a shadow of a doubt. My

kids and grandkids want to spend time with me. They value my existence that much. How beyond wonderful is that?

This morning, the birds were singing. The squirrels in my backyard were putting on a play show for my benefit. The sun was shining half the day, never mind the other half. When the clouds appeared they moved in the sky like they didn’t have a care in the world, which I’m pretty sure they didn’t.

Clouds float, rivers flow. Nature takes its course. We should be like nature. We should flow freely with the current and not cling to the rocks along the shore. The rocks only hold us back from what we are meant to be. They may feel secure and steady, but they won’t help us move forward.

They don’t aid in getting us to our destination. Only the current can do that.

Tonight I am feeling thankful.

Sometimes I cling to the rocks, even though I know that won’t get me anywhere. I am human. We all are human.

Bill eases restriction for classroom paraprofessionals Under a new law supported by state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs), more paraprofessionals, or teacher aides, will have access to classrooms sooner.

“Paraprofessionals are vital members of a school’s support staff,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By lowering the eligible age, Illinois is offering an opportunity to an aspiring educator or other responsible adult while working to address the statewide teacher shortage.”

In Illinois, paraprofessionals are currently required to be at least 19 years old. Under the new law, the age would be lowered to 18 years old, as long as the individual meets the other license requirements. Paraprofessionals are required to have a high school diploma, an associate degree and pass a competency test.

According to the Illinois State

Board of Education, the number of unfilled paraprofessional positions in school districts across the state nearly doubled from 2021 to 2022.

There were 1,237 unfilled positions last year compared to 2,397 this year, making this law more important than ever.

“Paraprofessionals add another layer of support to the classroom, allowing students to have more opportunities for one-on-one assistance,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Lowering the required age by one year will allow additional qualified individuals to take on this role and offer support to our school system.”

Senate Bill 3988 was signed into law Wednesday and is effective Jan. 1, 2023.

ACA announces Ukrainian refugee benefit and art sale The public is invited to join the Addison Center for the Arts (ACA) and artists/activists Tania Blanco and Jennifer Hereth in the ACA’s fundraising efforts to benefit Ukrainian refugees. There will an art sale and exhibition at the ACA Gallery opening Thursday, May 5, remaining through June 18.

The highlight of exposition will be a fundraising benefit reception on Saturday, May 21 from 2-5 p.m.

All proceeds from the sales and contributions will be donated to the United Ukrainian American Relief Committee (UUARC).

The UUARC is the organization that helped Blanco’s family emigrate to the U.S. from Ukraine when she was a child. She is living proof of the effectiveness of the UUARC at shepherding displaced families.

“Our hearts go out to all those who have been victimized by this tragedy,” said ACA president Mark Turk. “When disastrous, life-altering occurrences happen, we all wonder what we can do to help.

Leiber presents scratchboard demo at next AAG meeting

Annette Perone Leiber will be presenting a Scratchboard demonstration (also known as scraperboard in Great Britain) on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. in Forum Room B at Addison Trail High School. (Enter Door #4 by the Addison Center for the Arts.) Scratchboard is a form of direct engraving in which the artist uses a sharp tool to scratch India Ink from a china clay board to reveal a white or colored layer beneath.

Following the demonstration, members will have the opportunity to create a scratchboard with a design of their choice. Supplies will be furnished.

More about Annette Perone Leiber An award-winning artist, Annette is the founder and past president of the Addison Art Guild and the Addison Center for the Arts. She has had numerous one person exhibits, and her art is in collections across the United States and abroad. She teaches art classes in numerous mediums to both adults and children and gives workshops and lectures to arts and non-art groups.

Annette has grown as an artist over the years, working in acrylics, watercolors, pastels, printmaking, scratchboard, collage, pen and ink, and sculpture to name a few.

She states: “Today, I embrace contemporary techniques, while combing concepts, materials and images from many sources,” she said. “My senses fill me with wonder, compelling me to create art that will communicate my thoughts and feelings. Possessing voice, vision and creative energy, I understand myself as imagination leads me through the stages of a developing artist.”

What will you do when the lights go out—for a long time?

By Jim Nowlan Cyber-terrorism came to the front of my mind with the advent of the war in the Ukraine. If cornered, a thug like Vladimir Putin might lash back with cyberwar tools. The Russians appear quite advanced at this, based on the many, damaging hacks of American businesses that appear to be initiated from Russia.

Cyber war may simply be a problem for which there is no practicable solution, no matter what they tell you in MBA school. A cyber-attack on our electric grid may indeed be more devastating than a nuclear attack. We simply can’t live long or communicate without electricity. Scary to think about. But we must.

In 2015, respected journalist Ted Koppel published Lights Out, a sobering account of our nation’s lack of planning for a cyber-attack that takes down one or more of our three major electricity grids (basically, East, Midwest, West). Koppel’s wellplaced sources say the grids are a half-century-old, and vulnerable. The experts Koppel talked with observe, soberly, that such an attack is not a matter of if, but when.

Koppel reports there are nations and, maybe worse, freelance hackers, who know how to knock out electrical grids, just as the U.S. and Israel knocked out Iran’s nuclear operations a few years back.

After interviewing the top cyber and political authorities in our nation, Koppel concludes that no serious planning is being done, because: 1.) government and private electric producers don’t want to share vital information; 2.) the scope of how to provide for millions of people for weeks or months is too vast to get our arms around, and 3.) we’ll wait until an attack actually happens, then we’ll try to figure out what to do. By the way, what will you do if you are without electricity for weeks, even months?!

So, I checked in with a top local emergency professional, to see what

is being done at the county level.

Mat Schnepple is the director of the Office of Emergency Management for Henry-Stark counties in central Illinois. With deep experience as a fire chief, paramedic, and hazardous materials commander, Mat is a blend of earnest Boy Scout and Chicago Bears linebacker. Well-trained, decisive. The kind of guy you want in charge when things go down.

Mat says his teams of professionals and volunteers are ready to respond to 72-hour electric outages, with water, food, shelter, health care.

But when I ask about blackouts that might last weeks, even months, to millions of people, Mat’s voice kind of trails away.

As for us citizens, Koppel says we haven’t even reached the stage of apathy, which is vague awareness of the problem, plus a subconscious decision to do nothing about it.

Sometimes in life, there are no solutions. Thus, the brain tells us, rationally you might say, to put the likelihood of apocalypse out of our minds.

This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try, that is, demand that Congress and the President develop an expensive, comprehensive plan. Sometimes, as with Civil Defense efforts to protect against a nuclear attack during the Cold War, the value lay in the message sent, as possibly a deterrent—that America was ready to respond, somehow, to a nuclear attack, then regroup, resist and retaliate.

I will get my five-gallon cans of water and gasoline (the gas, not for a getaway—where would you go?— but to run the car as a generator), and a large box of meals ready-to-eat.

What do we do when the lights might go out? We wait until they go out. Then we’re screwed.

Glowiak Hilton commends new law to address teacher shortage Under a new law supported by State Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs), more paraprofessionals, or teacher aids, will have access to classrooms sooner.

“Paraprofessionals are vital members of a school’s support staff,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By lowering the eligible age, Illinois is offering an opportunity to an aspiring educator or other responsible adult while working to address the statewide teacher shortage.”

In Illinois, paraprofessionals are currently required to be at least 19 years old. Under the new law, the age would be lowered to 18 years old, as long as the individual meets the other license requirements. Paraprofessionals are required to have a high school diploma, an associate degree and pass a competency test.

According to the Illinois State

Board of Education, the number of unfilled paraprofessional positions in school districts across the state nearly doubled from 2021 to 2022.

There were 1,237 unfilled positions last year compared to 2,397 this year, making this law more important than ever.

“Paraprofessionals add another layer of support to the classroom, allowing students to have more opportunities for one-on-one assistance,” Glowiak Hilton said. “Lowering the required age by one year will allow additional qualified individuals to take on this role and offer support to our school system.”

Senate Bill 3988 was signed into law Wednesday and is effective Jan. 1, 2023.

Avian flu a concern in Illinois The Centers for Disease Control is monitoring the recent outbreak and says it is not an immediate public health concern and no human cases have been detected in the U.S. On April 21, the Illinois De-partment of Natural Re-sources recommended removing bird feeders and birdbaths until the end of May to discourage large gatherings of birds and interactions between waterfowl and songbirds. Hummingbird and oriole feeders do not need to be removed. Any remaining birdseed should also be re-moved, and bird feeders and baths should be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution that is nine parts water and one part bleach.

Joy O’Keefe, assistant professor and Extension wildlife specialist in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences, says removing bird feeders is a precaution that can protect wild and domesticated birds.

“Passerines, or songbirds, that come to bird feeders are not likely to be affected,” O’Keefe says. “In the absence of feeders, birds should be able to find natural sources of food from sprouting native plants and emerging insects.” She added that property owners can plant native shrubs and wildflowers this spring as natural food sources for birds.

Removing feeders is especially important for people who take care

of poultry because, while avian flu has not been found in songbirds, feeders can attract wild waterfowl.

Flock owners should prevent contact between their backyard flocks and wild birds.

The disease has been detected in commercial and small flock poultry and gamebird operations in 29 states. In April, two cases of avian flu were found in small backyard flocks in McLean and Carroll counties, affecting 80 birds. No commercial producers have been affected in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced an emergency order on April 5 canceling poultry-related events such as sales or exhibits.

Illinois is home to about 9 million commercially pro-duced poultry, mostly laying chickens and turkeys. The number of backyard birds that people keep for egg production is estimated to be 30,000 birds.

Small flocks may have a higher risk of contracting avian flu, says Kenneth Koelkebeck, professor and Extension poultry specialist in the Animal Sciences Department.

“Those backyard flocks are mostly outside and waterfowl may be around,” Koelkebeck says, “whereas commercial poultry are kept in enclosed buildings.”

Poultry producers should follow biosecurity measures to reduce the possibility of their birds contracting avian flu. Protocols, such as keeping free-range birds inside

and wearing protective boot covers when entering a chicken coop, reduce the risk of spreading bacteria or viral pathogens. The USDA has biosafety recommendations for backyard flocks available at bit. ly/3L9s1Rb. “Poultry owners should keep things as clean as they can,” Koelkebeck says. “Remove standing water if possible because it will attract migratory waterfowl.”

Visible symptoms of avian flu include runny eyes, swelling, and lethargy. When the disease is detected in domestic poultry, the IDOA quaran-tines the site; flocks are de-populated to prevent the disease from spreading and remove them from the food system. Other

Avian flu cases are on the rise in the Midwest. From canceled poultry shows to advising homeowners to remove bird feeders, Illinois is urging those who come into contact with birds to take steps to prevent the disease from spreading.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza is a contagious virus that spreads among wild geese, ducks, and other waterbirds species, as well as some raptors, including bald eagles.

Wild birds, which may show no symptoms even if infected, can carry the disease to new areas as they migrate north and transmit it to domestic poultry, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

Avian flu is an extremely infectious respiratory disease that affects all domestic poultry, including laying hens, broilers, and turkeys, as well as waterfowl and game birds.

It can spread quickly within flocks causing severe disease and death.

In the last outbreak of avian influenza, more than 200 commercial flocks and 21 backyard flocks in the U.S. were affected, leading to the deaths of more than 50 million birds between 2014 and 2015.

Illinois became one of 33 states with confirmed avian flu cases in wild birds.

More cases have been found in Champaign, Fulton, Sanga-mon, Will and Cook counties.

IDPH warns about suspected cases of hepatitis in children Healthcare providers advised to report to public health authorities

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has announced that it has learned of three suspected cases of severe hepatitis in children under 10 years of age, potentially linked to a strain of adenovirus.

Two of the cases are in suburban Chicago and one is in western Illinois. One case resulted in a liver transplant. IDPH is working to learn of other suspected cases in Illinois

and is asking healthcare providers in the state to be on the lookout for symptoms and to report any suspected cases of hepatitis in children of unknown origin to local public health authorities.

The IDPH announcement follows a nationwide alert issued by the CDC in response to a cluster of nine cases of hepatitis of unknown origin in children in Alabama ranging in age

from 1 to 6 years old, all of whom were previously healthy.

The CDC said that symptoms of hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, rdinclude fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, light-colored stools, joint pain, and jaundice and can be caused by viruses. These cases appear to have an association with adenovirus 41.

Adenoviruses spread from person-to-person and most commonly cause respiratory illness, but depending on the type, can also cause other illnesses such as gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach or intestines), conjunctivitis (pink eye), and cystitis (bladder infection). Adenovirus type 41 typically presents as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, and is often accompanied by respiratory symptoms.

While there have been case reports of hepatitis in immunocompromised children with adenovirus infection, adenovirus type 41 is not known to be a cause of hepatitis in otherwise healthy children.

The CDC said it is working with state health departments to see if there are additional U.S. cases, and what may be causing these cases. At this time, the CDC said it believes adenovirus may be the cause for these reported cases, but investigators are still learning more—including ruling out other possible causes and identifying other possible con-

tributing factors.

The CDC is asking physicians to consider adenovirus testing using PCR or NAAT on respiratory samples, stool or rectal swabs and whole blood for pediatric patients with hepatitis of unknown etiology, and to report any possible cases of hepatitis of unknown origin to the CDC and state public health authorities.

In addition, the CDC is encouraging parents and caregivers to be aware of the symptoms of hepatitis, and to contact their healthcare provider with any concerns.

The CDC continues to recommend children be up to date on all their vaccinations, and that parents and caregivers of young children take the same everyday preventive actions that it recommends for everyone, including washing hands often, avoiding people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding touching the eyes, nose or mouth.

Gov. JB Pritzker officially lifted the state requirement that face coverings be worn on public transportation April 20 after a federal judge overturned the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mask mandate.

U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle of the Middle District of Florida ruled last week that the federal mask mandate was unlawful since it exceeds the authority of the CDC. The ruling comes about a week after the CDC extended the mask mandate through May 3.

Masks are no longer required on public transit, in public transit hubs or at airports, but local governments still have the right to maintain their own face covering requirements on public transportation.

Pritzker’s order now only requires masks where they are federally mandated, as well as in congregate facilities and health care settings.

“I’m proud of the work our state has done to fight COVID-19 and protect our most vulnerable,” Pritzker said in a news release. “I continue to urge Illinoisans to follow CDC guidelines and, most importantly, get vaccinated to protect yourself and others.”

Following Pritzker’s announcement about revising mask requirements, the Chicago Metra and CTA announced that masks will no longer be required, effective immediately.

The CDC continues to recommend face coverings for those who are immunocompromised, people who can’t be vaccinated and in areas of high transmission.

Amaal Tokars, acting director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said in a news release that the department continues to closely monitor COVID-19 cases throughout the state and is working with local public health partners to keep the public informed.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 3,931 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and nine deaths on April 20—the highest one-day case count since Feb. 11.

There were 568 individuals hospitalized for COVID-19 as of April 19, 61 in intensive care beds and 29 on ventilators, all of which remained near pandemic lows.

More than 21 million vaccine doses have been administered with about 73 percent of Illinois residents age 5 and over fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to remain upto-date on your vaccinations, and that includes booster shots, especially for those who are at risk for more severe health outcomes,” Tokars said.

Just like a cancer diagnosis can bring on a variety of emotions, the end of cancer treatment can affect emotions in other ways.

People go from being intensely focused on treatment and trying to beat the disease, to trying to figure out a “new normal” once treatment is over.

Adjusting to this new reality after cancer can bring all sorts of emotions. Some people experience depression or anxiety. Others deal with intense mood swings. Some may even have personality changes.

While strong emotions are often

expected during treatment, they can be more difficult to recognize or accept once treatment is complete.

These are common symptoms of cancer-related mood changes, provided by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network: • Feeling down or depressed • Difficulty concentrating and remembering • Loss of sexual interest or problems with sexual performance • Irritability • Changing emotions (sudden crying or anger) • Loss of interest in activities, so-

Rivian R1T truck named ‘Coolest Thing’ made in Illinois Manufacturers’ Association contest pits all-electric truck against Fruit by the Foot, others

Rivian’s all-electric R1T truck is 2022’s “Coolest Thing Made in Illinois.”

That was the result of the third annual Makers Madness bracket-style tournament hosted by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association which allows Illinoisans to vote for the “coolest” product made in the state.

This year’s winner was announced at the Governor’s Mansion last week. The contest is sponsored

by Comcast Business.

Manufactured in Normal, the R1T is the first electric truck in production that features four motors, eight driving modes and up to 400 miles of range on a single charge, combining off-road capabilities with the driving style of a sports car.

It can accelerate from zero to 60 in three seconds and has a towing capacity of up to 11,000 pounds.

The base level R1T, the Explore, starts at $68,575.

James Chen, public policy vice president and chief regulatory counsel for Rivian, said the company’s mission is keeping the world “adventurous in technology,” innovation and collaboration while providing jobs that support the Bloomington-Normal community.

“We are proud to call Illinois home and honored to accept this year’s award. So much credit goes to the plant team members who make the R1T every day and who made this accomplishment possible today,” Chen said.

Normal is home to the company’s first manufacturing campus where they build R1 products as well as commercial vans. They began production of the R1T in September

2021.

Over 400 products were submitted to this year’s Makers Madness competition with over 200,000 votes cast.

The all-electric truck bested a diverse group of challengers, including General Mills’ Fruit by the Foot snack, which is made in Belvidere.

Another product in the final four was the Orion Spacecraft Capsule’s Aft Bulkhead and Barrel and Tunnel which was made for deep-space travel missions planned by NASA. It is manufactured by Ingersoll Machine Tools Inc. in Rockford.

The other product in the finals, custom blazed diffraction gratings, allow for the creation of ultra-high line density and high precision patterning of surfaces, and are used in virtual reality headsets, semiconductor manufacturing and X-ray technology. Its manufacturer is Inprentus Precision Optics of Champaign.

Gov. JB Pritzker presented the award and said the company has established itself as a national leader in the EV industry and that he “couldn’t think of a more fitting winner” in the wake of a new state law that aims to put 1 million EVs on state roads.

Pritzker said the R1T is a “game-changer” in the auto industry and that through investments made in the Reimagining Electric Vehicles Act that incentivizes EV production in Illinois, the state can open more doors to “access 21st century manufacturing careers.”

In 2021, Pritzker signed the Reimagining Electric Vehicles Act into law, providing tax credits for manufacturers of EVs and their parts.

The tax credits range from 75 percent to 100 percent of income tax withheld for creating new jobs or

25 percent to 50 percent for retained employees and will depend on factors such as location and the number of employees hired. A 10 percent credit for training expenses would also be available.

In the Fiscal Year 2023 budget, REV credit eligibility was expanded to battery recyclers, hydrogen and

solar powered vehicles, and makers of the products’ component parts.

The Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, or CEJA, set the goal of putting 1 million EVs on state roads by 2030.

In a news release posted in early April, Rivian said the company has produced 2,553 vehicles and deliv-

ered 1,227 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022 at the Normal manufacturing facility.

“The mission of sustainability through investment in zero-emissions transportation technology and economic growth is evident throughout our operations in Illinois,” Chen said.
