Manufacturer AmTab opens in industrial park Company brings 160 employees to Village

Redmond reservoir expansion benefits Village and area residents

Last summer, the Village and DuPage County went through an extensive expansion project at Redmond Reservoir, which created nearly 6.5 million gallons of additional capacity. Because of high amounts of precipitation in the last few weeks, this project proved to be successful, saving Bensenville and surrounding areas from extensive water damage to properties, according to Village officials.

“Because of the extensive work done to expand the Redmond Reservoir last summer, Bensenville residents, businesses, and surrounding communities avoided major water seepage and flooding issues,” said Village President Frank DeSimone.

“This was a great example of how investing in storm water infrastructure can help improve quality of life for residents and help protect properties from extensive damage.”

During the tour, Jason explained how they take raw materials like wood and metal and the process it takes to turn it into their finished product. AmTab also prides itself on sourcing all their materials from U.S. suppliers and target local businesses as much as possible.

When looking for a new space,

AmTab General Manager Jason Samikkannu explained why Bensenville stood out as an ideal location.

“This facility provided the opportunity to centralize our operations into one space as well as providing us with room to continue to grow our business,” he said. “The central location of Bensenville to Chicago and the surrounding suburbs gives us the capability to attract high-quality front office talent and opens us up to a larger pool of the industrial work-

force. Operationally, we are now closer to our suppliers and have better shipping options.”

Samikkannu also commended the Village of Bensenville.

“The Village staff has been great to work with,” he said. “Our transition was extremely smooth, and this could not have been accomplished without the hard work of everyone at Village Hall. They were instrumental in keeping this project moving for us on a relatively tight timeline.”

Tammy Duckworth: ‘I think every Memorial Day about the guys from Illinois that never made it home’ EFFINGHAM DAILY NEWS

U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth spends Memorial Day honoring her friends in the military who have fallen and the heroic soldiers who kept her from numbering among the dead.

“Memorial Day is a day to honor our heroic dead,” said Duckworth, the junior senator from Illinois.

“People often confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. Veterans Day is when we thank our veterans for their service and Memorial Day is specifically to honor the fallen.”

Duckworth retired from military service in 2014 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after serving 23 years. She flew Black Hawk helicopter combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Deployed to Iraq in 2004, it was on Nov. 12 of that year when a rocket-propelled grenade took down her helicopter. She lost her legs and has limited use of her right arm.

“I think every Memorial Day about the guys from the Illinois National Guard that I knew that never made it home from Iraq,” Duckworth said. “Whether it’s the CH-47 (Chinook helicopter) crew that was shot down in Iraq from the Peoria unit, or whether it was Sgt. First Class Bill Chaney of my own unit out of Chicago Midway Airport, who was a Vietnam Veteran and deployed to Iraq at the age of 59, who died of natural causes and never made it home. Or whether it was the young men, that as a public official, I went to their deployment ceremony out of Woodstock, Illinois, who were killed coming back.”

Duckworth said the Chinook CH-

47 helicopter shot down on Nov. 2, 2003, was part of the Illinois Army National Guard unit based in Peoria.

Sixteen were killed and 20 wounded.

Among the dead was Illinois Army National Guard Pilot 1st Lt. Brian D. Slavenas.

Friends and family in Genoa described Slavenas to The Associated Press as a “gentle giant,” a nonviolent man who felt a duty to his country.

“He wasn’t one of those gung-ho, want-to-go-to-war-type guys,” his brother, Eric Slavenas, told the AP. “He was there to do a job.”

Duckworth said people serve their country in the military for many reasons. She began Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“I found myself in all of my classes becoming friends with either currently serving guardsmen and reservists or with veterans in my class on the G.I. Bill,” Duckworth said. “I remember watching the Berlin Wall come down and I remember seeing all of those East Germans and Czechoslovakians fleeing the Soviet Union.

“People were grabbing whatever possessions they could carry and running into freedom and I remember thinking how proud I was to be an American and it was my nation standing with the NATO allies that represented freedom and liberty.

“I fell in love with the meritocracy of the Army and decided that this was something I wanted to do as part of my life. I just wanted to do my part for this nation that I love more than my own life.”

After receiving her Master’s of Arts Degree in International Affairs at George Washington University, Duckworth pursued a Ph.D. in political science from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where she finished her ROTC training in May 1992 and received her commission as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Her first choice was to be a helicopter pilot, because that was one of the few Army combat assignments offered to women at the time.

Duckworth grew up in various cities throughout Southeast Asia. Her father, Franklin Duckworth, worked for the United Nations Refugee Program after he retired from the military, where he had served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Working for the U.N., Franklin Duckworth provided humanitarian aid to the Vietnamese boat people and refugees fleeing Laos and Cambodia, then worked for multinational corporations.

“Memorial Day was something we always observed at the U.S. Embassy to honor our heroic dead,” Duckworth said. “My family history on my dad’s side goes back to the Revolution, and Memorial Day was always significant in my family.”

Duckworth led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Iraq in April.

She returned to Iraq for the first time since her helicopter was shot down in 2004.

“Memorial Day isn’t about me now,” she said. “I survived the shoot down. If I was killed, Memorial Day would be about me, but thanks to the heroism of both my crew of my aircraft and the second aircraft in our flight, I made it home.

“Because they saved me, Memorial Day isn’t about me. And I get to honor them and get to honor our fallen dead and work as hard as I can for

our veterans, work as hard as I can for family members of the fallen, and make sure we stand by every one of our military men and women.”

Ceremony held to swear in Village Trustees On Tuesday, May 14, DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin administered the oath of office for Nicholas Panicola, Jr., Rosa Carmona, and Marie T. Frey as Village of Bensenville Trustees where they will all serve a four-year term. Rosa Carmona has served as a Village Trustee since 2015 and Nicholas Panicola, Jr. was appointed by Village President Frank DeSimone in 2017. Marie T. Frey was newly elected to replace Annie Jaworska, who did not seek

re-election in the April 2019 election.

Marie T. Frey has been a resident for nearly 40 years in the Bensenville-Wood Dale area. She has been active in volunteering at Village sponsored senior events including the monthly Senior Luncheon. In October of 2018, Marie was presented with the Breiter-Cuvala Volunteer of the Year Award that recognized her spirit of volunteerism in the community.

Glowiak passed House Bill 2818, which empowers the Attorney General’s Office to help keep the home addresses of survivors private from their attackers and stalkers.

“It is vital that we maintain our commitment to protect survivors of sexual assault and stalking,” Glowiak said. “When our survivors perform the courageous act of seeking justice, they aren’t just leaving a painful situation behind: They are often making themselves the target of a violent person who knows them intimately.

To give them the opportunity to take

steps toward healing and feeling safe again, we must move to protect their privacy.”

The measure allows survivors of sexual abuse or stalking to list the Attorney General’s Office as their contact address instead of revealing their actual address, running the risk that their abuser may locate them.

The program is currently established for victims of domestic violence.

House Bill 2818 expands its availability to all survivors of sexual abuse and stalking.

House Bill 2818 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and now heads to the House for a concurrence vote.

The report of a mosquito batch testing positive for the presence of West Nile virus (WNV) has prompted the DuPage County Health Department to encourage county residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites and the risk of contracting WNV. Lake Park holds Invention Convention The 5th grade classes at Lake Park held the school’s annual Invention Convention on Wednesday, May 22.

Students were asked to create an invention based on a problem that they observed, then come up with a resolution using STEAM Skills, that is, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The students displayed signs documenting their inventions, the research conducted, and explanations of the process.

judges and Lake Park students visited the Invention Convention in order to see demonstrations of the inventions. Visitors also had the opportunity to sit and watch a video presentation that included recorded “ads” all of the students had made for their inventions.

Conroy-backed gun licensing reform introduced in House

In response to the February mass shooting in Aurora that resulted in the tragic loss of five lives and injuries from which responding police officers and civilians are still recovering, State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) is working to pass bipartisan comprehensive gun licensing reform supported by the law enforcement community.

“The fact that our state does not require FOID card applicants to submit their fingerprints for a comprehensive background check led the Illinois State Police to approve an application for the man who went on to murder five people in our community,” she said. “Had our law enforcement agencies gotten the full picture, they would have seen his violent criminal record from out of state. This man

purchased his gun legally before Illinois State Police discovered his dangerous history months afterward and asked him to hand over his weapon.

Even though law enforcement knew he’d purchased a gun, there was no system in place to ensure he turned it in. So many lives could have been saved in this instances like this if law enforcement agencies had better access to information about applicants and the tools they need to get illegal guns out of the hands of dangerous people.”

The “Fix the FOID Act” expands background checks to all firearm purchases by removing the current exemption for some private transfers. This legislation requires fingerprint submissions, which increases law enforcement’s ability to discover

out-of-state convictions.

Currently, only individuals applying for concealed carry permits are fingerprinted, which is how the Illinois State Police discovered that the Aurora shooter had a violent criminal record dating back to 1995.

This legislation requires the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement to ensure that individuals who’ve had their FOID cards revoked surrender their guns. Under the Act, FOID cards must be renewed more frequently to ensure there are regular background checks for gun owners.

Application fees would be increased, with $4 from every FOID card dedicated to school-based mental health services.

Studios630 group hosts artists’ reception at Summer Art Show On Sunday, June 9, from 1-3 p.m., the Studios630 local artist group is holding an Artists’ Reception at the National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) in Lombard to celebrate the opening of its Summer Group Show and a solo exhibit the Next Driving Force by artist Jeff Anderson.

He approaches the canvas as a jazz musician does an improvisational piece - creating on the fly. This reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Artists will be on hand to talk about their works.

Fine art originals and prints will be available for purchase.

“I am amazed by the talent of the participating artists,” said Carol Marcus, Studios630 member and secretary. “These local artists

County receives award for diversion program The National Association of Counties (NACo) granted DuPage County a 2019 Achievement Award for its program titled “First Offender Call Unified for Success (F.O.C.U.S.)” in the category of Criminal Justice and Public Safety. The awards honor top county government programs that are innovative and enhance services for their residents.

The F.O.C.U.S. program’s goal is to provide non-violent first-time drug offenders the necessary treatment, counseling, education and support needed to successfully complete their term of probation and to ensure they remain on the road to recovery and rehabilitation. This new initiative refers cases from all felony courtrooms that involve eligible participants to the F.O.C.U.S. courtroom, headed by one dedicated judge and a staff with expertise in all facets of addiction recovery. The program is funded by a

$50,000 grant from the DuPage County Board and Heroin Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Task Force. Since its inception in September of 2018, more than 500 cases have been assigned to the F.O.C.U.S. courtroom.

“The F.O.C.U.S. courtroom provides an alternative to addiction’s dangerous and deadly path.

The F.O.C.U.S. court structure and approach allows our circuit to be a leader in addressing the unrelenting heroin/opioid epidemic. It is an innovative approach which provides first-time offenders hope, a route to recovery and a productive life,” said Chief Judge Daniel Guerin of DuPage County’s 18th Circuit.

Started in 1970, NACo’s annual Achievement Awards program is designed to recognize county government innovations. Each nominee is judged on its own merits and not against other applications received.

Lawmakers and supporters of a bill that would strengthen the Firearm Owners Identification card system chanted “Fix the FOID” in front of the statue of Abraham Lincoln outside the Capitol on May 22.

Speakers like Milagros Burgos told their stories of loved ones who’ve died because of gun violence. Burgos’ husband, Rafael, stood next to his wife, holding a photo of their daughter, Alexandria.

Burgos’ voice cracked as she spoke to a group from a podium about her daughter. Alexandria was a college student who was killed by a stray bullet in 2014 in Chicago when she was 18.

Burgos said Alexandria had no idea what a gun looked like, or what it sounded like when fired.

“Enough guns, enough lives taken away from families, enough gun violence,” Burgos said. “... We cannot get loved ones back, but we can make a difference, together.”

Alicia Schemel with Moms Demand Action said legislation like Senate Bill 1966 would have prevented the death of her father, who was shot while on his way to pick her up from work.

“I know many of you have stories about tragedies that have hit your family and friends,” said Democratic Rep. Kathleen Willis, of Addison. “We’re going to make sure we have less and less of those stories.”

If passed, the bill sponsored by Willis would overhaul the state’s FOID system.

It would increase renewal and licensing fees from $10 to $50, require a-one-time fingerprint, better define clear and present danger, and prioritize those who fall within that definition for license revocation.

When pressed on her position of mandated fingerprinting during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on May 21, Willis said she supports the measure if it means keeping people safe.

“We want to make sure we keep this state as safe as possible, allowing people who are lawful gun owners to own them in a safe manner,” Willis said during the rally.

Cindy McMullan, who attended the rally and is a member of Moms Demand Action, said she made the trip from Columbia, Illinois, because she wants to see sensible gun laws in the state.

She said she’s not opposed to lawful gun possession and the measures she supports— such as preventing domestic violence abusers or convicted felons from legally owning firearms—are also supported by gun owners. The current system, she said, “obviously has weaknesses” that put her family at risk.

Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield, the bill’s chief sponsor in the Senate, said SB1966 is a necessary change to policy and practices that will save lives. She also told the crowd to not accept “no” as an answer when requesting other lawmakers to support the bill.

“This is your state, this is our communities, and this is our problem we’re trying to fix together,” Morrison said. “You elected these people. They need to listen to you.”

ground and overloaded storm sewer systems. During this time, the Redmond Reservoir was able to utilize nearly all of its 6.5 million gallons of additional capacity. This project helped reduce the amount of flooded streets, seepage into homes, and flooding in downstream communities.

“Typically this much rain would have overflowed the reservoir but,

with the expansion last summer, there was sufficient capacity to handle the storm water,” said DeSimone.

“The added capacity also allowed the Village to delay its pumping operations, which provide a direct benefit to the downstream areas. Additionally, the recreational uses of the Redmond Park were also intact as almost all the walking paths and basketball courts were still functional.”

Warriors boys tennis team finishes third in conference

The Willowbrook baseball team dropped a 14-3 decision in five innings to Elk Grove in the championship game of the Class 4A Willowbrook regional in Villa Park.

Willowbrook was the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Glenbard West sectional, while Elk Grove was the No. 9 seed.

Against Elk Grove, Willowbrook found itself down 9-0 in the second inning after the Grenadiers put nine runs up in the second and then added five more in the third. Elk Grove had 16 hits.

Sam Tumilty went 1-for-2 with a walk. Trevor Jaloszynski went 1-for2, while Marshall McDonnell went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two walks.

Jeremy Conforti and Danny Holloway each had an RBI. Isaac Gaines

had three stolen bases, as did Scott Tumilty.

Joey Guthrie took the loss.

Willowbrook reached the regional final after an 11-5 win over Bartlett.

Willowbrook scored nine runs in the second inning and held Bartlett scoreless for four innings.

Sam Tumilty went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Jack Hines had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Jaloszynski had two runs scored and a hit. Willowbrook boys tennis The Willowbrook boys tennis team placed third in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet.

Joe Garner took second at No. 3 singles for Willowbrook. The No. 1 doubles team of Drake DelValle and Abdullah Osmani took third, as did the No. 3 doubles team of Logan Bliss and Dan Martinez. Garner and the DelValle-Osmani and Bliss-Martinez pairings earned all-WSC Gold honors.

Willowbrook also took second at its own Willowbrook District 88 Classic.

Overall, Ben Cavka at No. 1 singles and Mark Lobdell at No. 2 singles both hit the 20-win mark.

Coach Ed Delacruz was impressed with the team’s showing against Lake Park at Medinah Country Club.

Willowbrook softball The Willowbrook softball team lost 9-1 to Sandburg in the championship game of the Class 4A Hindale South regional in Darien.

Willowbrook’s lone run came on a Samantha Mishlove home run.

The Warriors reached the final by defeating Summit Argo 12-2 in the regional semifinals. Willowbrook scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to trigger the slaughter rule.

Annemarie Knudtson went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Amy Bussa had two hits and two runs scored.

Emma Barrington had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Kayla Neff had two RBI. Mikayla Tomaszewski had two hits and a run scored. Katie Pettinger had two runs scored and walked three times.

Caitlyn Kulczyski and Neff combined to throw a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Kulczyski struck out six in two innings and allowed no runs.

Neff struck out seven in four innings.

Addison Trail baseball team loses to Bartlett in regionals despite allowing no hits Blazers boys volleyball team wins playoff match

The Addison Trail baseball team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Bartlett in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal game at Bartlett.

The Blazers led 1-0 until Bartlett scored both of its runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game.

Vince Daudelin was the hard-luck loser for the Blazers. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed no hits and one earned run. He struck out four and walked six.

AJ Carlson went 2-for-4. Mike Scali went 2-for-3, while Jonathan Lollino had a hit. Lollino and Daudelin each stole a base.

Earlier, Addison Trail was a 13-0 West Suburban Conferene Gold Division winner against Proviso East.

Addison Trail scored eight runs in the third inning and had 12 hits. Carlson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Daudelin had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Scali had a run scored, a hit and three RBI. Alex Conrad had three hits and two runs scored. Josh Meglio had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and two walks.

Mark Rosal had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Carlson and Daudelin each had two triples in the game, while Meglio had a double. Conrad also stole four bases.

Nick Zucchero was the winning pitcher. He allowed two hits and struck out five in five innings of work.

Addison Trail also downed Proviso East by a 14-2 count in WSC Gold play. The Blazers posted six runs in the fourth inning.

The Fenton softball team had itself a championship season.

The Bison finished 8-2 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play this season and won a conference title for the third time in school history and first since 2008 (1977 was the other title year).

In recent play, the Bison defeated Guerin Prep 6-2, Elmwood Park 133, Elgin St. Edward 17-5, Chicago Christian 6-2 and Proviso West 12-1.

Fenton lost 8-2 to Willowbrook and 10-9 to Elmwood Park.

Fenton’s season came to a conclusion after a 5-0 loss to Evanston in the semifinals of the Class 4A Glenbrook South regional.

“Winning the conference was the top performance,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello. “It wasn’t an individual

performance. It was a full team performance. After losing the first conference game of the season to Guerin, we were chasing teams the rest of the season. We had to win three in a row beginning with Guerin, and the girls put it all together to earn the championship.”

Mello said Fenton has benefited greatly this season from playing as a team. “The team is understanding the importance of knowing that everyone is on the same page,” he said.

“Everything might not always go smoothly, but they are together when it really matters.”

Mello also loved how his team handled itself during the must-win stretch of games. “Our biggest improvement has been being able to play in pressure games and deliver,” he said. “We went through a stretch of games that were all high intensity.”

Mello noted he was looking for consistency at the plate, making the normal plays and some exceptional plays, and throwing strikes and cutting down on walks heading into the

postseason.

Individually, Cynthia Ibarra, Claira Panos and Gianna Saldana stepped things up down the stretch for the Bison. “Cynthia took the ball in the circle in our biggest games during the conference race and delivered each time. Claira has been on fire at the plate and has really taken over second base. She is making some really athletic plays. And there isn’t a hotter hitter than Gianna in the area.

She has absolutely been crushing the ball.”

Fenton had 22 wins (second-most in program history) through its first 34 contests.

Fenton boys volleyball The Fenton boys volleyball team dropped a 21-25, 25-20, 25-14 contest to Addison Trail in the quarterfinals of the St. Charles North regional.

Fenton baseball The Fenton baseball team was eliminated from the postseason after a 10-6 loss to Niles North in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal game hosted in Skokie at Niles North.
