Illinois continues to lose jobs, according to latest report

ILLINOIS NEWS NETWORK Illinois lost an additional 7,200 jobs in April, according to the latest report from the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).While the state’s unemployment rate dropped from 4.9 percent to 4.7 percent, that’s largely because more than 15,000 unemployed workers stopped looking for a job, according to IDES. Manufacturing jobs also continue their decline to the tune of about 10 a day, the report said. Illinois has lost 3,600 manufacturing jobs so far this year. The IDES report noted that this latest data comes as Butterball announced it will close its plant in Montgomery.

“This jobs report coupled with another business closing its doors in Illinois reinforces the need for action,” Greg Baise, CEO and president of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, said in a news release. “Since 2009, Illinois has lost more than 1,600 manufacturing jobs while our neighbors have added tens of thousands of new jobs.The department blamed the sluggish jobs report on inaction by state lawmakers to approve structural reforms that would make Illinois more business friendly and competitive with its neighbors.“We continue to see sluggish growth in our economy due to the inability of the legislature to institute common-sense structural changes that would encourage investment in our state,” Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity Director Sean McCarthy said. “If we create a business-friendly environment, we will see greater opportunities and more good paying jobs in every community.”

Brentwood Liquors reports armed robbery

On May 11 at 3:16 p.m., Bensenville police responded to an armed robbery that occurred at Brentwood Liquors, located at 105 W. Grand Ave. Upon arrival, officers were told that an unknown white male described as thin build, roughly 55 years of age, with gray hair and a beard, entered the liquor store, displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the clerk. The clerk complied. The suspect then exited the store and entered a green sedan. The vehicle was last seen traveling south on York from Grand Avenue. The suspect was wearing glasses, a gray jacket, a green shirt and blue jeans. No one was physically injured and the case is under investigation.

ICGS to host lemonade stand for children’s cancer

Pictured on the left is Anna Ciamarra, Immaculate Conception Grade School’s own cancer hero, with one of her kindergarten pals. Anna is helping host a lemonade stand to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which raises funds for children with cancer. On Saturday, June 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of ICGS (at the corner of York and Arthur), Anna will lead ICGS in hosting her own Anna’s Lemonade Stand with the goal of raising $5,000 for ALSF. Anna also has a fundraising page for online donations through June 3, at alexslemonade. org/mypage/1321345. All are encouraged to visit Anna’s Lemonade Stand in person.

Two mothers at IC Grade School, Andrea Krautkramer and Stephanie Maddock, have joined with Anna’s mother Ruth to make preparations for the charity lemonade stand. Anna, who will graduate from ICGS kindergarten on May 26, knows all too well what it is like to battle cancer. She is currently being treated for high risk T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

This treatment, which involves a two-year period of in- and outpatient chemotherapy, lumbar punctures, transfusions, and constant diagnostic testing, has been an unimaginable challenge for the Ciamarra family.

Old-fashioned garden party to County plans benefit Mayslake restoration Memorial Day Ceremony on May 28 DuPage County will host a ceremony in observance of Memorial Day at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, at the DuPage County Government Complex in Wheaton. The guest speaker will be Jim Myrick, co-founder of the DuPage Honor Guard.

The ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial, located outside near the pond on the DuPage County Government Complex, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. The memorial commemorates DuPage County residents who lost their lives in military conflicts at home and abroad beginning with the Black Hawk War in 1832 and continuing on to the most recent engagements overseas.

The event will include the laying of the wreath by Gold Star families; a weapons salute by DuPage Honor Guard; and finally, the DuPage Honor Guard will retire the colors.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the 421 JTK Administration Building.

Additionally, DuPage County offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 29. County departments and services will reopen on Tuesday, May 30. For more information, visit dupageco-il-vetsmemorial.org.

Speakers at the event will include Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick, District 2, and Neal

Vogel from Restoric LLC, who will talk about the Mayslake courtyard restoration completed in fall 2015, and the next phase of work on the historic mansion.

“Mayslake is a beloved cultural and historical gem in DuPage County,” Redick said. “A restored and improved Mayslake will be an important tool in introducing people to nature through the arts.”

The Fenton softball team dialed it up on the offensive end in a pair of recent victories.

The Bison scored a 21-1 non-conference win against Chicago Intrinsic Charter and also was an 11-7 non-conference winner over Chicago Taft. Fenton also dropped a 7-3 non-conference game to Willowbrook. Fenton was 12-20 overall through late last week.

In the game against Intrinsic, Jenna Geraci’s two-run double in the first inning gave her the Fenton all-time RBI record. She broke the previous mark of 135 held by Nicole Susmarski.

Fenton coach Dave Mello has been pleased of late with his team’s aggressiveness out of the gates.

Suspect arrested in October shooting On May 10, the Independent learned that a person had been arrested in connection with a shooting that took place last October on eastbound I-290 near North Avenue Allante James Sewell, 23, of Frankfort, has been arrested and charged in the incident. He was taken into custody on Tuesday, May 9, by sheriff’s deputies in Will County on unrelated charges. He is currently being held in the Will County jail, according to information.

“We are starting to score early and often,” he said. “Against Taft, we scored five runs in the top of the first and then against Intrinsic we scored eight in the bottom of the first. It has been great to see the offense start scoring early in games.”

The Bison also have dialed things up on the defensive side of the diamond. “Our fielding percentage has climbed to .914 from .890,” said Mello. “It makes the game much simpler when we only need to record three outs each inning as opposed to four or five.”

Fenton’s pitching has come together as well. “Our pitchers are throwing strikes and we are doing a really nice job of limiting the walks,” said Mello. “That, coupled with improved defense has helped us compete.”

Police arrest local man for attempted robbery, felony theft Elmhurst Police have charged a local man for Felony Theft which occurred at the Shell Gas Station at 103 W. Third Street on May 3, 2017, at 3:15 a.m. and attempted robbery of the 7- Eleven Store at 572 S. York Rd. A white/male in his 40’s, wearing a White Sox jacket, entered the Shell Gas Station and demanded money from the cashier.

The offender took an undetermined amount of U.S. Currency and fled from the scene on foot. A short time later, the suspect was taken into custody in the 900 block of Hillcrest and transported to Elmhurst police headquarters. The proceeds from the theft were recovered from the suspect. Further investigation revealed that the suspect had entered the 7-Eleven at 572 S. York Rd. earlier in the night and attempted to rob the store clerk by implying that he had a gun, but was not successful. Joseph A. Addison May 18 • A 27-year-old Chicago man was charged with domestic battery in the 1-100 block of S. Fairbank Drive at around 2:44 p.m. Police said the suspect slapped the victim on the nose and mouth and choked her.

• Police said Chloe Richart, 21, of Hampshire, was found to have a failure to appear warrant out of the Kane County Sheriff’s Department for no valid driver’s license near Lake and Michigan at around 11:43 p.m.

May 9 A 21-year-old Addison woman was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and domestic battery in the 600 block of Briar Hill Lane at around 6:35 a.m. Police said the suspect shoved and kicked a victim and stabbed him on the leg with

a kitchen knife.

Villa Park May 13 • Joe Wilder, 23, of Lombard, was charged with unlawful contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile at a recreational facility at around 8:08 p.m. A male juvenile from Lombard was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, possession of alcohol and of tobacco by a minor.

• Theft was reported at a local store. Police said that a victim believes he lost his wallet while trying on clothing in the dressing room between 2 and 4 p.m., and when he checked with management, nothing had been turned in.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Charles Mitchell, 27, of 677 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn, has been sentenced to ten years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for severely beating his 61-year-old father in June, 2016. On March 9, 2017, a jury found Mitchell guilty of Aggravated Domestic Battery (Class 2 Felony) following a three-day-long trial in front of Judge Daniel Guerin, who handed down the sentence. On June 16, 2016, Mitchell appeared in Bond Court where his bond was at $1 million with 10% to apply. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

Police said that between 6 p.m. May 6 and 9:19 a.m. May 7, a vehicle parked in a driveway appears to have been hit with BBs or pellets causing dents in the fender. An unknown suspect also spray-painted graffiti on a sign in the area.

• Joanna Wyszkowska, 31, of Addison, was charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol and unlawful possession of alcohol near the Great Western Trail and Ardmore at around 4:33 p.m.

• Disorderly conduct was reported in the 900 block of W. North Ave. at around 9:54 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect kicked in the front door and threatened a family.

May 11 • Theodore E.L. Simmons, 37, of Plainfield, was charged with DUI, aggravated driving while license revoked and no stopping-standing-parking on a roadway.

• Criminal damage was reported in the 1-100 block of N. Harvard at around 6:15 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect struck the no-parking sign and damaged the post at the base.

May 9 • Sergio Sandoval-Muniz, 38, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license, speeding and no insurance near Ardmore and Ridge at around 11:52 p.m.

• Three male juveniles from Villa Park were charged with disorderly conduct in the 1-100 block of N. Michigan at around 3:28 p.m.

• A female juvenile from Villa Park was charged with possession of cannabis, interference with a police officer and a curfew violation in the

Upon their arrival, officers found all three men at the hotel. Mitchell’s father was suffering from multiple head injuries including a lacerated ear, a broken jaw and three missing teeth.

He was immediately transported to a local hospital where he remained for one week to receive treatment for his injuries.

An investigation into the matter revealed that Mitchell and his brother got into an altercation over a cell phone. Following the dispute with his brother, Mitchell got into a physical altercation with his father in which Mitchell struck and kicked his father about his head and body.

Mitchell will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Judge John Kinsella has sentenced Timothy Peltz, 52, of Wheaton, to 34 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for sexually assaulting a minor female. On January 20, 2017, Peltz appeared before Judge Kinsella where he entered a plea of guilty to four counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child, a Class X Felony. This afternoon, Judge Kinsella sentenced Peltz to 8½ years on each count with the counts to be served consecutively for a total of 34 years.

The sentence stems from allegations that from January 1, 2008, through August 4, 2013, Peltz sexually assaulted his minor victim on multiple occasions. The assaults came to an end when the victim became physically able to resist and then told her mother what Peltz had done to her. The girl’s mother immediately contacted the Wheaton Police Department who in turn contacted the DuPage County Children’s Center. On September 1, 2016, Peltz appeared in bond court where his bond was set at $1 million with 10% to apply. He has remained in custody since that time.

Peltz will be required to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Man accused of attacking mother with ax held on $500,000 bond DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced Friday, May 19, that bond has been set for a Downers Grove man charged with Aggravated Domestic Battery to a Senior (Class 2 Felony) for allegedly striking his 80-year-old mother in the face and head with an ax. On May 14, 2017, the victim’s daughter went to visit her mother for Mother’s Day. Upon arriving at the home, the daughter noticed lacerations about her mother’s face and head. The two women then went to the hospital to seek treatment for the victim’s injuries. Upon seeing the woman’s in-

juries, hospital authorities alerted the Downers Grove Police Department.

An investigation conducted by the Downers Grove Police Department led to Flick as the person allegedly responsible for the injuries to his mother.

It is alleged that on the evening of May 13, 2017, Flick returned to the home he shared with his mother. It is

further alleged that at some point in time Flick repeatedly hit his mother about the head and face with an ax.

Flick’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 12, 2017 in front of Judge Liam Brennan.

For the love of bookstores, abroad and everywhere Last fall we spent a month in the south of France, primarily in Aixen-Provence. One happy discovery (among countless happy discoveries) was Book in Bar, a charming bookstore with coffee bar and pastries. I love bookstores of any variety but this one was especially magical.

Not only did they have books in English, they also have books in Japanese, Chinese, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Arabic, and of course, French. Or perhaps I should say anglais, japonais, chinois, allemande, espagnol, russe, italien, arabe, francais.

People of all languages gather to read, to nibble, and to converse. You could practice your language skills just by striking up a conversation or by attending a scheduled time to do

so. They had author events, poetry readings, book clubs, and writing workshops. In a word, heaven.

The thing about bookstores, this one and all in general, is that they are ageless. Not only are the books timeless in many respects, the bookstore entices all ages. Mothers with toddlers weave in with the students and the retired folks. It does not matter how old you are, a beloved book is a topic for conversation with anyone who also resonated. Or

simply the love of books is enough of a common cause to comingle in peace.

When I have been in other countries, I often find myself in bookstores even those that are not international. I have lingered in bookstores in France, Germany, Italy and beyond just to take in the feel of the place and to delight in the written word, even if it’s in a language I cannot read.

I pick up the books and flip through them. I rub my finger on their covers. I look at the photo of the author. Even with the lack of language, there is a connection. A fellow human felt the desire to express in the written word and those thoughts are enclosed in a capsule we call a book.

My command of the French language is enough to decipher a menu, differentiate between junk mail and

real mail, and read the newspaper headlines. I do not have the skill to read a book in any language but English. Except for a few children’s books in French. But the joy of a bookstore is universal.

When you travel, I invite you to visit a bookstore. Notice what titles are translated by your favorite authors. Look at guidebooks in any language. Read the posters - you usually can get the gist even if you don’t understand all the words.

Visiting a bookstore brings in touch with other regular folks wanting to get their information and inspiration via the written word. That is something we all have in common. You see that people are people and we are more alike than different.

You can even lose yourself in the big name chain bookstore in the mall. The books can take you away from whatever is on your mind and that is magic in itself. Six minutes of reading can lower your stress. Six minutes of flipping through books, in any language, can lower mine.

For now, I daydream of old wooden floors in an ancient building with quiet murmurs of many languages, and the smiles of delight as we all peruse the pages of new delights. I close my eyes, I close the book, I smile.

Lauren Kroll dashes to the finish line

Lauren Kroll (#3004), an Addison Trail senior in the middle, dashes to the finish line of the 100-meter dash prelims at the Illinois High School Association Class 3A State Finals on Friday afternoon. Kroll won the second preliminary heat in a time of 11.97 seconds to qualify for Saturday’s finals. Kroll would not only earn all-state status in the 100-meter dash, placing sixth in :12.06 on Saturday, but would also earn fifth place in the 200-meter dash, finishing in :25.75 on Saturday.

pulled into the downtown Naperville train station at approximately 4:45 that afternoon at which time some of the passengers disembarked the train. Klein allegedly remained on the train. It is alleged that after the doors closed, Klein pulled a revolver, stuck his arm out of the window of the train door and fired one shot, striking the victim in the abdomen. It is further alleged that Klein then attempted to exit the train through the same window but was unable to as train personnel and other passengers detained him until authorities arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries.

Klein’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 12, 2017, in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

Bond set at $150,000 for teacher accused of possessing child pornography

Suspect is resident of Elmhurst

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that bond has been set at $150,000 with 10% to apply for a St. Charles East High School teacher charged with possession of child pornography. Gregory Burgener, 63, of 437 W. Fremont, Elmhurst, appeared in Bond Court this afternoon where

he was charged with two counts of Possession of Child Pornography, a Class 1 Felony.

Pursuant to an investigation led by the Elmhurst Police Department, Burgener was taken into custody this morning on charges of Possession of Child Pornography. The investigation is still in progress.

“The allegation that Mr. Burgener was in possession of child pornography is sickening,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank the Elmhurst Po-

District 4 holds Kindergarten University Addison School District 4 welcomed 120 attendees to Indian Trail Junior High on Wednesday, May 17 for a Kindergarten University event.

Incoming 2017-18 kindergarten students and their parents had access to resources and visited a variety of displays designed to help families learn ways in which they can help their children be kindergarten-ready

by August. Students had the chance to play with activities that will help develop number and letter-forming, shape identification, and many more school and kindergarten skills. Formal presentations were given in both English and Spanish, giving direction and benchmarks for parents who will be sending their children to school in fall. The Willowbrook baseball team ended up finishing second in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with a 14-4 record.

Leyden won the WSC Gold title by a game with a 15-3 mark. Willowbrook’s losses in conference were to Downers Grove South (twice), Leyden and Hinsdale South.

The Warriors head into Thursday’s Class 4A Hoffman Estates regional semifinal with a 23-8 overall mark and a No. 3 sectional seed.

Willowbrook closed out the regular season with a 1-2 mark in a WSC Gold series with Downers Grove South.

In the opener, Willowbrook allowed only four hits, but made five

errors in a loss. The Warriors had 13 hits in a 6-4 loss.

“We had the game-tying run at bat in the seventh, but couldn’t get anything going,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner.

In the second game, Willowbrook jumped out to a 4-0 lead early. Kyle Ferguson homered for the Warriors.

The Warriors were stung by eight Downers Grove South runs in the bottom of the sixth. Downers went on to win 11-4.

“We made some mistakes with errors and Downers South had some hits,” said Wisner.

Willowbrook rebounded to win the finale behind sophomore pitcher Jack Nilles who gave up three hits and no earned runs. Scott Kohrt earned the save by pitching a score-

The Addison Trail baseball team ended the regular season on a high note with a series win against Morton.

The Blazers went 2-1 in the threegame series to finish the regular season 12-15 overall and 8-10 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

Addison Trail lost the opener 8-7 after leading 7-2 at one point.

“The sixth inning they put five on us and then had one in the bottom of the seventh,” noted Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy. “It was a bad inning-and-a-half for us. It was a tough one.”

The Blazers won the second game 5-1 behind the pitching of standout Nick Villasenor.

Addison Trail wrapped up the series with a 15-2 victory. Trevor Fulmer was the winner. “Trevor pitched well and he probably had five or six hits in the series,” said Kennedy.

Addison Trail also has been bolstered of late by the hitting of Simon Marinelli, George Neri and Jack Kalbas.

“Simon has been on a tear. He’s hitting the ball well,” said Kennedy.

“George had six hits in the series and Jack has been hitting well. He had

a bases-clearing double in the last game against Morton that helped us out.”

Addison Trail was scheduled to open the Class 4A postseason at home earlier in the week against West Chicago. A win there would have put the No. 12 seed Blazers into a game against No. 5 seed Geneva.

“We’re starting to hit the ball a little better,” said Kennedy. “Our confidence has picked up. When you get to this point the coaching is kind of done. They have to go out there and win the game. They have to keep winning and make the plays. In tournament time, mistakes are magnified.

We need to make more plays.”

Kennedy said Villasenor was slated to start the West Chicago game and if Addison Trail won, Fulmer would pitch against Geneva.

“Nick has been dominant for us all year and he’s pitching with confidence,” said Kennedy. “Trevor has been outstanding as well. His ERA is down to 2.35. We just haven’t had the run support for these guys. At this time of the year it comes down to making things happen. Our guys are confident. They know if they want to keep playing high-school baseball, they have to play the game the way they know how and to the best of their ability. It’s pretty simple at this stage. If you want to keep playing, you have to win.”

Villasenor went into the tournament with 93 strikeouts and only 10 walks and an ERA of 0.80.

“Jack does a nice job,” said Wisner. “He’s a nice pitcher. He throws 82-83 MPH and has amazing control. He can put it where he wants to and in high school baseball that’s like throwing 90. We’re still pitching well as a whole.”

Wisner also lauded the recent relief-pitching efforts of Kohrt, Vince Ruchala and Will Hines. “Our relief pitching has been pretty outstanding,” he said. “We’ve done well in

relief.”

Offensively, Willowbrook has five players batting more than .400 with Jon Kelso leading the way at .498.

“That’s the first time he’s been under .500 all year,” said Wisner.

“We’re doing a lot of things well right now. We struggled in the field a little bit against Downers Grove South and that hurt us a little bit.”

MJ Ranieri, Ben Espinoza and Mike Dembowski also are hitting above .400, while Ferguson has raised his average up to .378.

Wisner lauded the team’s performance in the WSC Gold this season.

“We’re 14-4 and alone in second place,” he said. “A 23-8 overall re-

cord is a pretty darned good year.

Any time you have less than double-digit losses you’ve played good baseball.”

Willowbrook plays today in the Class 4A Hoffman Estates regional semifinals against either Batavia or Hoffman Estates. The winner advances to the regional title game Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hoffman Estates.

“We’re expecting good things in the regionals,” said Wisner. “On the other side of the bracket is Glenbard East and Lake Park and we have played them. They are good teams but we are familiar with them, so the good thing is we don’t have to see someone we aren’t familiar with.”

The Addison Trail softball team headed into this week’s Class 4A state playoffs with some momentum on its side.

The Blazers kicked off a recent stretch with a 12-5 win on the road against West Suburban Conference Gold Division foe Morton.

“It takes about 45 minutes for us to go over there, sometimes longer,” noted Addison Trail coach Mark Olson. “We get there and we gave up four runs in the first inning, but we came back and won 12-5.”

Addison Trail then lost to Hinsdale South. “We took one on the chin against them, but we had beat them earlier in the year,” said Olson.

Addison Trail bounced back against Leyden and then beat Guerin Prep in a non-conference game before losing to Downers Grove South and splitting two games with Willowbrook.

“We played well against Downers Grove South (lost 6-2) and then we beat Willowbrook,” said Olson.

“We’re playing pretty well right now. We have some mojo going into the playoffs.”

Addison Trail finished the regular season with a 13-17 overall mark and finished 6-6 in WSC Gold play.

Addison Trail won 12-0 against District 88 neighbor Willowbrook, but then lost 3-1 in the rematch.

“We may have been riding the high from the win a little bit too long in the next game against them,” said Olson.

Overall, Olson has seen his team take the next step, particularly over the second half of the season.

Olson said Alyssa Pham also has been a key contributor of late. “Alyssa has been tremendous,” he said. “Between her, Sophia Hawkins and Vincenza Zaccaro, they have solidified us in the outfield and with their bat. It’s nice to see Alyssa out there. She’s had some injuries over the last few years. This year, she’s healthy and hasn’t looked back.”

Addison Trail opened up play in the 4A playoffs earlier this week against Elgin Larkin. The winner was to face St. Charles East at Lake Park on Wednesday of this week.

“We’re happy that we’re playing at home for our first game and then we’ll go from there,” said Olson.

“We played Larkin earlier in the year and had a tough game, but right now we’re playing really well.”

Addison Trail girls soccer coach Sergio Nunez saw many positives from his team throughout the 2017 season.

Jocellyn Gallegos was the team’s leading goal-scorer, while goalie Priscilla Vega made more than 75 saves. The team’s defenders also made 47 off-side trap executions.

Addison Trail lost to Lake Park 2-0 in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs. The Blazers had played to a

0-0 tie with Lake Park a week earlier.

“Improvement was evident in our minimum ball touch,” said Nunez.

“We started with 4-5 touches before passing and got it down to 2-3 touches, which keeps the opponent guessing. Our offense did well in attacking and pressuring right away. I do want to see progress in finishing and winning 50-50 balls. Our defense was solid. We had the best off-side trap team in all the West Suburban Conference. We do need improvement on clearing and getting the ball down

field for quick transitions.”

Priscilla Vega and Jessica Cosio were strong in goal for the Blazers.

“Priscilla and Jessica did a great job this season,” said Nunez. “Priscilla with many excellent saves and Jessica with huge improvement in directing her teammates to prevent shots on her.”

Aryana Carrera, Berenice Berumen and Lizette Gallegos were key on defense. “Aryana, Berenice and Lizette really stood out as top defenders,” said Nunez. “Those back

three, game in and game out, did their 100 percent best to stop any damage from our opponents.”

Nunez also was thrilled with the team’s commitment and dedication.

“These 19 varsity players worked hard to improve individually and as a team,” he said.

“They never gave up, nor did they take a game as a loss. They committed and dedicated to finish the duration of the game with heart. They understood that you win as a team and lose as a team.”

Carrera and Vega earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors. “That’s well-deserved,” said Nunez. “They are good players and smart young ladies.”

Nunez said the team’s won-loss record did not properly reflect the progress made on the field. “At the end, our record and game results were not an indicator of how we played,” he said. “What hindered our results were strong long-distance kicks and finishing with one less touch. A top focus for us for next season.”

Addison Trail senior standout Lauren Kroll came home from the Class 3A girls state track and field finals held in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University with some heavy metal.

Kroll won state medals in both the 100 and 200 dashes to cap off her Addison Trail track and field career.

Kroll took fifth in the 200 with a time of 25.75 and was sixth in the 100 with a time of 12.06.

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team put itself one win away from history.

The Knights scored a recent 2-1 win over Chicago DePaul College Prep to win the Class 1A IC Catholic Prep sectional title at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The win moved the Knights to 20-5 overall and put them in a Class 1A supersectional game earlier this week against Chicago University High.

If IC Catholic Prep won that game it will play for the first time in program history in the state semifinals at North Central College in Naperville on Friday.

The Knights also have won nine games in a row and 14 of their last 16.

“It was the battle of halves,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Tom Schergen.

IC Catholic Prep trailed 1-0 heading into halftime as the result of an own goal.

DePaul led 1-0 until 14 minutes remained in regulation. That’s when Olivia Hurt scored off a Tessa Langan corner kick to tie the game.

Bella Leslie then put the game-winner home with eight minutes left off another Langan corner kick.

“What we did well is play with heart,” said Schergen. “In terms of games we played before that, we played team soccer, but when we got pushed a little, they all came together and played with heart and put it all out on the field. That was the difference.”

The Knights reached the final by scoring a 6-3 win over Francis W. Parker out of Chicago in the sectional semifinals.

Langan scored four goals in the game and set a new IC Catholic Prep single-season goal-scoring mark with 31. The previous record of 28 was held by Natalie D’Agostino.

Hurt and Grace Fuller each added a goal and Hurt had two assists in the game.

The 20 wins in a season also established a new program record. The previous season high was 17 wins.

“The girls are doing well,” said Schergen. “They are peaking at the right time and doing things well as a team. They are at the point where they have the opportunity to do something that no other girls’ soccer team at IC Catholic Prep has done (go downstate). They have history in

front of them. If they come out and play well (earlier this week against University), they will set another school benchmark.”

Schergen said the major key to the string of 14 wins in 16 games has been the players’ increasing familiarity with each other.

“The difference between early on in the season is I don’t think we knew how to play together,” he said. “We had a lot of individual play and individual talent. Now, we’ve figured out how to use teammates’ strengths.

We’ve played well as a team.”

Schergen noted DePaul held a decided shots-on-goal edge in the sectional final.

“I think they outshot us 25-4 or something like that,” he said. “Their goalie was on fire, saving everything.

A lot of teams could have gotten down and packed it in. Our girls kept fighting and kept getting after it. It’s a testament to how much heart they have. They found a way to win even with the deck stacked against them.”

Schergen also lauded the leadership abilities of senior captains Langan, Tess Reardon, Liz Maloney and Kaitlyn Grady.

“The four senior captains have been unbelievable,” he said. “They got the whole team to buy in. It’s been an unbelievable season. We’re doing the little things that make a difference. These girls never cease to amaze me.”

By Mike Miazga The IC Catholic Prep girls track team was plenty busy at the recent Class 1A state finals meet held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

IC Catholic Prep’s 400 relay team was fourth in its preliminary heat with a time of 51.49. That team included Jaida Smith, Nailah Landon, Olivia Slavin and Kiersten King—all underclassmen.

The Knights’ 800 relay team took eighth in their preliminary heat with a time of 1:53.99 with Smith Slavin, freshman Hannah Johnson and King.

Neither relay qualified for the finals.

Smith was sixth in her preliminary heat of the long jump with a mark of 15-11 3/4. Landon and Mia Valenzuela both registered no height in the preliminary flights of the high jump.

Freshman Gabi Zanoni was ninth in her preliminary flight of the shot put at 31-1. Smith was ninth in her preliminary flight of the triple jump at 33-10 1/4.

King was sixth in her preliminary heat of the 200 with a time of 27.02.

IC Catholic Prep boys track The IC Catholic Prep boys track team placed second at the recent Class 1A sectional at Seneca. The Knights ended with 92 points. Seneca won the sectional title with 112 points.

Knights standout Jordan Rowell qualified for state in three individual events. Rowell won the long jump sectional title with a mark of 22-6.

Rowell also won the 100 dash in

11.27 and took second in the 400 with a state-qualifying time of 52.03.

IC Catholic Prep won the 400 relay sectional title in 45.16. The Knights also won the 800 relay title with a time of 1:35.53.

The Knights’ other state qualifier is junior Dan McCann, who won the shot-put sectional title with a throw of 39-3.

IC Catholic Prep will compete in the Class 1A state finals meet in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University this weekend.

IC Catholic Prep baseball The IC Catholic Prep baseball team had its Class 2A regional title game at Westmont against the host school postponed by rain last weekend. The Knights were scheduled to play that game this past Monday at Westmont.

If the Knights won that game, they advanced to the Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional at home at Plunkett Athletic Complex.

The Knights reached the title game after scoring a 6-2 win over Lisle in the semifinals. IC Catholic Prep jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and led 6-0 after four innings.

IC Catholic Prep had four hits in the game. Griffen Eichhorn had a home run, two walks, a run scored and two RBI. John Hoffman had a double and two RBI, while Matt Sutton had a hit, a run scored and a walk.

Brendan Russ was the winning pitcher. He went 5 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and one earned run. CJ West pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and earned the save.

IC Catholic Prep girls track team competes at state

The Timothy Christian middle-school boys track team recently won the conference title with a strong showing at the league meet.

Timothy finished first in the boys divisions. The girls team took third out of seven schools.

“Both teams had outstanding performances,” said Timothy Christian coach Bill Ridder. “The athletes ran and jumped well with many getting their personal best at the meet.”

The boys 800 relay team of Liam Gescey, Mike Vogt, Jackson Day and Josh Pae beat the previous Timothy middle school record by two seconds with a time of 1:47.96.

Josh Bode broke the school record in the 1,600 run with a time of 5:17.

Pae broke the Timothy record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.19.

In the girls 1,600 relay, Rachel Smith, Cailey Schuurmann, Morgan Vandenbrook and Caroline Kuenzi also broke the middle-school record with a time of 5:13.

“All of the athletes performed exceptionally well,” said Ridder. “We are so proud of them.”
