Village receives urban and community forestry grant The Village of Bensenville is among 20 Illinois communities awarded grants administered by The Morton Arboretum in partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, to help improve Illinois urban forestry. The $15,000 Urban and Community Forestry Grant will enable The Village of Bensenville to purchase parkway trees in an effort to diversify and reforest its urban canopy that was decimated by emerald ash

borer over the last decade. “Millions of trees in North America were devastated by the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle, including over 1,000 trees in Bensenville,” said Village President Frank DeSimone. “Receiving this grant helps increase the number of trees in our community which is essential to our environment and wildlife.” The 2019 / 2020 Urban and Community Forestry Grant program is

awarded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the USDA Forest Service to meet urban and community forestry goals throughout Illinois. The matching grants provide opportunities for public entities (municipalities, park districts, forest preserves etc.) to support any combination of tree planting,

developing a management plan, completing a tree inventory, or developing a tree preservation / protection ordinance. Grantees are required to update their ordinances or pass new ones to meet required standards. The Morton Arboretum provides free assistance to ensure that communities are able to meet the requirements.

The grants were awarded through a competitive process, with more than $217,000 in available funds distributed evenly north and south of highway I-80, and communities competing in their own geographic areas. The Village of Bensenville is required to match the grant funding, either financially or in-kind.

Wood Dale undertakes multi-year, multi-phase storm water project

As Wood Dale experienced yet another heavy storm system over the past week, the City is preparing to embark on the next phase of a massive storm water mitigation improvement project to assist residents. With regular, heavy storms increasing, the Wood Dale City Council took the steps necessary to develop a multiyear, multi-phase flood control project that will benefit hundreds of homes. The first phases of this project saw completion over the past year with improvements made to Squaw Creek and Dalewood Avenue areas. This coming summer, the City will embark on the next phase of the plan on the southwest side, in Wards 2 and 3, which will increase inlet capacity, enlarge underground conveyance and storage, and divert water into underground storage facilities for up to 2.4 million gallons, with lift station and discharge piping. The City is working in conjunction with other local governmental entities such as Wood Dale School District 7 to provide these solutions and lessen the impact on residents, while also saving the City and tax payers more than $1 million in the process. Grant funding will also be sourced to provide additional financial assistance for the project.

“We know that during construction, many streets will have limited accessibility,” said Director of Public Works Alan Lange, who is overseeing the project for the City. “We will do everything we can to reduce the impact on residents’ quality of life. We appreciate their patience and understanding while we upgrade the infrastructure to make Wood Dale an even better place to call home.” Phase one will include underground storage along Potter & Prospect, which includes a lift station, bringing the force main to Dalewood, and bringing collector sewers from Sarah/ Irmen intersections to connect to the underground storage; and a rear-yard storm sewer along Gilbert. Phase two, in 2021, will create additional storage at Westview Elementary School. Phase three will add southern underground storage, lift station and force main to Gilbert and develop collector sewers. In an effort to provide full understanding of the scope of the project, the City has developed a project website where residents can view a full project presentation, submit feedback or questions and subscribe to updates once the project begins. Visit the website at wooddale.com/ construction.
