Police say action was ‘targeted attack:’ general public not in danger

Over the weekend, the Independent learned that a double homicide had taken place near the intersection of Elizabeth Drive and Denise Court in Addison. According to the police report, the two men were fatally shot while driving through the Village on Saturday, May 6, which caused the vehicle to crash into a tree. Addison police are referring to the incident as a “targeted attack,” which means authorities believe no one in the general public was at any risk of death and injury.

After following up on several leads during the investigation, officers identified the victims as Alberto Rios, 20, of Villa Park and a 17-year-old juvenile male of Addison. Both were taken to area hospitals. Rios went to Adventist GlenOaks Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In a subsequent release from the Addison Police Department, the 17-year-old was identified as Kevin Bustos-Garcia, who is from DeKalb County but currently lives in Addison.

Bustos-Garcia was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center, where he too was pronounced dead.

The case remains under investigation, as police are interviewing witnesses and checking security footage from the area where the crash occurred.

Montini siblings pass State Achievement in Music exam

Congratulations went out recently for Montini Catholic siblings, Emmanuel (freshman) and Marie (junior) Corpuz for their success in passing the 2017 Illinois State Achievement in Music Examination (AIM) for piano.

The Illinois Achievement in Music Program covers twelve levels of testing and examinations are conducted in two parts: Music Theory and Technique & Performance. According to AIM Performance Chair, Diane Jankiewicz, the required repertoire covers music from different periods.

Emojimania has taken over cyber world

You could say it started with the simple, round smiling yellow face back in the historic happy hippy days of the 1960s. It’s when Yellow Smiley was first created. Love, peace, smiles and all that jazz.

For decades, Smiley was just Smiley – the iconic symbol that communicated happiness in any and every language. The word emoji hadn’t even been invented yet.

But the future had much in store for Smiley as he (or maybe she) made the leap from hippy culture hard copy to modern day digital.

This happened in the late 1990s in Japan, where the first emojis originated on cell phones. The simple Yellow Smiley exploded into myriad round yellow faces – from happy to sad to winky-face and everything in between.

Along with emotional emojis came objects, ideas, the weather and so on. There are infinite possibilities for communicating about food, travel, animals, plants and anything else an emoji artist can create. If you can

draw it, you can emoji it.

The Japanese couldn’t keep their emoji ingenuity a secret for very long. A decade or so after their inception, Smiley and his friends made the digital trip over to the U.S. (and other countries worldwide) and pretty soon everyone was using the face with tears of joy to communicate how they felt about being able to express their feelings with a single click of the keyboard.

It might feel like emojis have been around for a long time (feels that way to me). But here in the U.S. it’s been less than a decade.

Legal experts are discussing whether emojis should be admissible in court. A movie and stage play – starring emojis – have been made or are in the works. Oxford Dictionaries named the face with tears of joy emoji as its 2015 word of the year.

At least one online service helps potential patients find doctors and schedule appointments using emojis instead of words to describe their medical conditions. For instance, combining the cat emoji with a sneezing smiley face indicates allergies. A heart combined with fire equals – you guessed it – heartburn.

So. Very. Clever.

Which obviously brings us back to the pile of poo. The possibilities for diagnosis are practically endless. I’d give that a smiling thumb’s up – or in emoji-speak: J C

available emoji capabilities were released in the U.S. in 2011. According to Emojipedia (which actually exists) there are currently 1,851 emoji characters, with another 69 set to be released in June of this year.

We currently have lots of yellow emoto-faces to choose from including smiling, dizzy, worried and confounded. There’s also smiling cat face, people with bunny ears partying (so many uses for that one), thumbs up, thumbs down, various colored hearts, camels (one and two humps), blood type emojis, zodiac emojis, fire, water, beer, wine, pizza, French fries, toilet, bomb and pile of poo – just to name a few.

Emojis continue to evolve. They became racially diverse in 2015.

Gendered emojis hit our screens in 2016. Some of the 69 scheduled for release in June include vomiting, a brain, zombie (male and female), breastfeeding (female), broccoli (unisex) and a giraffe (a little past April’s due date, unfortunately).

If my facts are correct, it took until 2017 to get a breastfeeding emoji, but we’ve had access to the smiling pile of poo as well as two options for camel for years. Anyone besides me see some irony there?

Emojis aren’t just multiplying.

They are diversifying – beyond text

Fenton softball team defeats Proviso East and Illiana Christian Geraci headed to Elmhurst College; Spizzirri to sign with Aurora University

The Fenton softball team enjoyed some recent success in a span of four contests.

While the Bison lost 13-0 to Aurora Central Catholic in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play, they swept a doubleheader from Proviso East by scores of 14-1 and 14-0 and split a MSC Blue Division doubleheader with Illiana Christian, winning 6-2 and dropping a 9-4 decision.

Fenton was 8-18 overall through 26 games.

Bison coach Dave Mello said he’s seen some key improvements from his team on the offensive side. “Our

bunting has really been helping us get runners into scoring position,” he noted. “We also have been doing a nice job of scoring runs after two outs.”

Defensively, Mello has seen, as a whole, progress there as well. “Prior (to a recent game), we had been limiting our errors,” he said. “We have really improved defensively most days.”

And Fenton’s coach has liked what he has seen inside the pitching circle.

“Our pitching has really been coming up big,” said Mello.

Against Proviso East, sophomore Payton Pugliese and senior Cynthia Guevara became the fourth and fifth

pitchers on the team to earn a win this season.

Mello also has enjoyed the team’s camaraderie. “Our team spirit has been amazing this season,” he said.

“It is a very close-knit team and they bring a lot of energy to every game.”

“All six seniors have been major parts of the varsity program for the past three years,” said Hastings.

In Fenton’s 15-0 win over Taft, all six seniors won both their singles and doubles matches. Additionally, sophomore Monse Estrada and freshmen Joanna Toledo and Fiza Anwar won their first career varsity matches.

Other winners included Jeniffer Reyes, Galilea Rivera and Dadhi Patel.

“The team has progressed very nicely throughout the season,” said Hastings. “We have witnessed much improvement from all team members, especially the girls who are playing for the first time.”

Fenton High School student wins national scholarship Ripal Shah, a senior and member of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Fenton High School​, has been named a national semifinalist in the National Honor Society Scholarship program. She was chosen from more than 9,000 applicants, and is one of the top 300 NHS members in the nation, and will receive a $2,325 scholarship.

Finalists are selected on the basis of their leadership skills; participation in service organizations, Ripal Shah clubs, and other student groups at school and in the community; and their academic record.

While at Fenton High School, Shah has impacted her school in numerous ways: she serves as student government vice president, contributes as a member of several clubs (some of which include speech team, tennis, and class council), has received state-wide recognition in math team and group interpretation, serves as recruitment director for Illinois Leadership Seminars, and volunteers at Alexian Brothers Hospital.

In the fall, Ripal plans to attend Washington University in St. Louis to double major in Neuroscience and Computer Science.

Scholarships have been awarded by NASSP since 1946, providing more than $14 million in scholarships to outstanding NHS members.

This year, the program awarded $1 million in scholarships.

Elmhurst College received 657 gifts and raised $121,000, as alumni, faculty, staff and students came together to give back and change lives during the College’s inaugural Day of Giving.

Held on April 20, the Elmhurst College Day of Giving raised funds to support scholarships, faculty development and other benefits to students. The day began with the Scholarship Breakfast, an opportunity for – Elmhurst College President Troy VanAken donors to meet the students who benefit from their scholarship support. gifts 2:1 made from alumni from the Classes of 1968-1988 who supported the Barbara and Robert W. Swords Light of Knowledge Scholarship (up to $2,500).

• Students also have given back to the College, with 100 seniors contributing to the class gift so far.

Addison Trail students hatch, raise ducklings Learn about animal behavior, sustainability

When walking into the Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level Environmental Science class at Addison Trail, five ducklings meet you at the door.

Those ducklings hatched on April 18 and are part of a new schoolowned flock at Addison Trail to teach students about biology, as well as sustainability. Marlo Rivera, who teaches the course, said students are tracking the behaviors of the animals and evaluating the economics involved with raising them. Members of the Addison Trail Environmental Club will help with the project as well, and the Environmental Sustainability class will get involved next year. The babies are Khaki Campbell Ducks and are descendants of a domestic, genetically diverse line from

a farm in Iowa. Rivera added the goal is to have the ducklings be sustainable and live on school grounds.

Addison Trail senior Christina Sanchez said she has enjoyed participating in the project.

Addison Trail hosts third annual Job Expo On April 22, about 200 people attended the third Addison Job Expo, which took place at Addison Trail.

During that event, participants were able to meet face to face with 17 local employers and College of DuPage and submit their résumé. The expo was an initiative of the Addison Workforce Development Committee, which is comprised of the Village of Addison and local businesses and organizations. The focus of that group is two-fold: 1. Collaborate to provide opportunities to train students and adults for jobs available in the area (as well as

offer programs such as internships and job shadowing) 2. Develop a directory of local businesses (including contact information, open positions and skills employees need to have) The committee’s goal is to discover the needs of employers and train local students and adults to meet those needs.

An evening of fun and friendship was held recently by the Women’s Club of Addison at Empress Banquets. Members and friends enjoyed dinner and “Hot Shots” at a photo booth with informal and spirited photos they could take home as a memento. In my opinion

Mountains, fairy tale magic, beautiful scenery, and fine dining We are just back from Chattanooga, TN, our second trip there in less than two years. We have done many a mountain road all across the land and Lookout Mountain is milder and has a different vibe.

Most mountains have switchback roads with tight curves and steep dropoffs. Those kind of roads have me wearing my motion sickness bracelets.

(Those tight sweatband-like bracelets with pressure magnets really work!)

On Lookout Mountain, there is some winding and some steepness, but there is beauty all around, natural beauty and gorgeous homes, and no motion sickness.

Many a mountain has nice homes but most all seem like rustic log cabin kind of places, (even the high-end ones), that feel more like vacation getaway than everyday living. Lookout Mountain is a community. The homes are old, stately, impressive, and oozing with character. There is a school and a Little League park and churches.

People live here year round creating a whole different atmosphere that feels warm and welcoming. House gawking is one of my favorite activities and there is plenty to gawk at here, all along the mountain and on the brow.

Lookout Mountain is home to two tourist natural wonders, Ruby Falls and Rock City. If you’ve ever traveled the south, you may have seen barn roofs painted with the words SEE ROCK CITY. I used to think cheesy tourist rip-off, but my heart has softened after our recent visit.

Ruby Falls was discovered by Leo Lambert, who used to play in Lookout Mountain Cave when he was a kid.

entrance was closed off. Leo had the crazy idea to drill in to the mountain to find the cave and open it again for people everywhere to come and enjoy.

Not only did he find the cave (after 3 months of drilling and an expense of $25,000 - quite a large bill in 1928 he discovered a 145-foot underground waterfall and named it after his wife Ruby.

Rock City is also a gift to the world by a local man and his wife. Garnet Carter was an entrepreneur who dabbled in many things and is credited for the invention of miniature golf because a real golf course proved too difficult to build on the mountain. He and his wife Freida created the residential development on the mountain called Fairy Land because of her love for European folklore. The street names include Princess Road, Fairy Trail, and Pied Piper Street. The homes are certainly in my land of enchantment.

Frieda created gardens around the interesting rock formations on the piece of property they owned. She planted wildflowers and plants along the trail she created around the large rock formation dubbed Lover’s Leap and it grew - literally - into a beautiful magical place.

Her husband knew people would pay to see these gardens and Rock City was born. I believe in fairy tale magic and I love natural beauty so this place is right up my alley. I love how people create things for their own passion and joy and leave a legacy for us all to enjoy.

We also dig Chattanooga because we can be on a mountain (Lookout Mountain, Signal Mountain, Raccoon Mountain) and then fifteen minutes later we can be in town dining at a French bistro. It’s the best of both worlds, hiking in nature and then a waiter serving me wine and duck breast.

In 1969, Chattanooga was dubbed the nation’s dirtiest city. Now this renaissance city has been voted the best town and the best outdoor town twice in recent years. The downtown is walable, vibrant and teeming with activity.

It is a testament to good community planning and civic pride that can be an inspiration to all.

It shows what a little fairy tale magic can do. Chattanooga, we’ll be back.

Addison Trail girls badminton team qualifies three for state

Three’s company for the Addison Trail girls badminton team.

The Blazers qualified three players out of the Fremd sectional for this weekend’s state finals meet in Charleston.

Junior Mary Grace Mutia took fourth in the singles division and earned a state berth. She’ll be joined at state by the doubles team of senior Athena Kakolires and junior Kasia Czepiel, which took third in the doubles division.

Mutia won her first match at sectionals by a 21-14, 21-15 count and then

lost in the second round. She came back to win her third match 21-13, 21-9 before losing in the third-place match, 24-22, 23-21.

Kakolires and Czepiel won their first match 21-15, 21-12 and then lost in the second round before coming back to win 21-17, 20-22, 21-15 in their third match and 21-15, 21-4 in the thirdplace match.

“We have had improvement on our tactical play yet sometimes we are paddling up stream in our technical play,” he said. “Defensively, we play solid but that can only hold us for so long.

We need to keep working to get our offensive play up to par. We still struggle with finishes.”

Nunez is proud of the way his team competes in light of it recording only one win and two ties thus far.

Addison Trail continues to work on consistency in games. “We’ve had great moments of play where our ‘mojo’ was there,” said Nunez. “The end result was not an indicator of our play. I need to see consistency game after game. I’m very proud of the 19 girls I’ve had here

at the varsity level for sticking together and working hard to learn the game I love They understand where they are at in regard to their competitive level and I respect that about them.”

Addison Trail boys volleyball The Addison Trail boys volleyball team recorded a recent 25-20, 26-24 West Suburban Conference crossover victory against Lyons Township.

Jacob Grygo had 19 assists, five kills and five digs. Mikey Strycharz had eight kills and three digs, while Colton Noel had seven kills and three blocks.

Addison Trail moved to 14-13 overall with the win.

Willowbrook boys volleyball team bolstered by contributions of many

The Willowbrook boys volleyball is benefitting from contributions on the whole court.

Through the team’s first 18 matches (8-10 overall, 1-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play), senior Brendan Waldorf was leading the team in hitting percentage at .339.

Junior outside hitter Tim Keefe was leading the way in kills with 99 and in service aces with 14. Senior Pete Alessandri was leading the Warriors in blocks with 35, while senior Calvin Linnig and junior Nick Cookingham were tied for the team lead in assists with 176 each. Junior libero-defen-

sive specialist Buddy Martens was tops in digs with 140.

Warriors coach Ryan Bazon has been particularly impressed with the recent contributions of Martens and Keefe.

“Buddy is a great addition to our defense,” he said. “This is his first year on varsity and he has quickly adjusted to the speed of the game. He continues to get better every match and is becoming more vocal and more of a floor leader. Tim has improved his hitting efficiency and has worked hard on his passing game.”

Willowbrook has 10 juniors and only three seniors on the roster. “We are a relatively young team,” said

Bazon. “Many players are new to the speed of the varsity game. We continue to work on fundamentals at practice. We have become a better passing team and our serve-receive has improved since the first few matches.

That is something we talk about in practice. Ball control is a high priority. This has led to a more effective attack.”

Willowbrook was serving at a 92.1% clip through those first 18 matches.

“Our serving has improved,” said Bazon. “We have served at a very high percentage, which has put pressure on the other side of the net.”

Bazon also has seen progress on

the offensive side of the net. “I feel like our pin hitters (Waldorf, Keefe, right-side hitter Jacob Entwistle and right-side hitter/setter Cookingham) have improved,” he said. “We still are working on consistency with our setters and hitters. Our setters (Linnig and Cookingham) are effective leaders on the court and make great decisions.”

Middles Aleesandri and Andy Shreckengost also are key parts to the team. “I would like to involve them more in our offense,” the coach said.

“Both hit a very high percentage and using them also would open us up at the pins. We will continue to work on getting them involved more in the of-

fense.”

Bazon also lauded the team’s defensive mindset. “Exceptional effort,” he said. “We have many conversations about defensive expectations.

In practice we work a lot of drills that require players to get their hands on everything. JT Beausoliel (junior) and Buddy anchor our defense. JT brings a spark to our team with his defensive effort.”

Additionally, Bazon is a big fan of the group in general. “Most importantly, this has been an extremely enjoyable year,” he said. “These are great kids who are very coachable. I have seen a ton of improvement so far this year.”

The Willowbrook girls badminton team placed second at the recent Hinsdale South sectional.

The Warriors had 11.5 points, while host Hinsdale South won the sectional title with 17 points.

Willowbrook did qualify two players for this weekend’s state finals meet in Charleston.

Senior Grace Chantos took second in the singles division, while sophomore teammate Hanna Konrath took third.

Chantos won her first match 21-12, 21-16 and then won her second contest 21-14, 21-13 before losing to Hinsdale South in the sectional-championship match.

Konrath won her first match 21-7, 21-6 and then lost to Hinsdale South in the second round. She came back to score a 21-7, 21-13 win in her third match and then defeated another player from Hinsdale South 22-20, 21-15 for third place.

Addison Trail boys gymnastics The Addison Trail boys gymnastics team was seventh at the recent Glen-

bard West sectional.

The Blazers finished with a team score of 126.750.

Addison Trail senior Alex Kominowski earned an automatic state-qualifying bid after taking second on floor exercise with a 9.350 score.

The state at-large qualifiers were to be announced earlier this week.

Willowbrook boys gymnastics The Willowbrook boys gymnastics team took sixth at the recent Glenbard West sectional. The Warriors finished with a 127.650 team score.

The Warriors did not have any automatic state individual qualifiers. The list of at-large state qualifiers was to be released earlier in the week.

In other recent action, the Warriors took third at the West Suburban Conference Gold Division meet.

Willowbrook’s JV team won the conference title by 15 points.

At the varsity level at conference, Zack Zeffiro tied for third on floor at 9.2. Matt Barrantes was fourth on pommel horse with a 7.2, while Nick Donaldson took fifth at 6.9.

Donaldson was seventh on rings with a 7.1. Zeffiro tied for fourth on vault with an 8.35. Isaiah Lewis was

eighth on vault at 7.95, while Dylan Leska was ninth at 7.7.

On parallel bars, Miguel Portilla tied for third at 7.45 and Matt Smith was eighth at 7.1. On horizontal bar, Portilla was third at 7.2 and Smith took sixth at 6.6, while Leska was 10th at 5.7.

At JV Conference, Matt Foley won the floor exercise with an 8.55. Saad Omar won pommel horse with a 6.4 Brendan Bailey won still rings at 6.8.

Foley won vault with a 7.2, while Bailey won parallel bars with a 7.55. Bailey also won the horizontal bar at 5.4.

Bailey also won the all-around competition with a 39.95. Sean Luner was second at 35.85.

In other recent action, the Warriors dropped a 151.4-135.0 WSC Gold meet to Downers Grove South and also lost 137.8-129.0 to Hinsdale South.

Both Willowbrook’s JV and freshman teams won both meets to stay undefeated in conference.

“Our team mainly is just trying to clean up the routines we have now,” said Willowbrook coach Caleb Strejc after his team had competed in the conference meet. “We really need to work on sticking landings on floor passes

and then dismounts on everything.

That has been a weakness this year.

Only a few guys will be adding new skills to routines (at sectionals), mostly on high bar.”

Strejc said the team improved throughout the season on parallel-bar routines. “I have seen specific growth in the execution of the guys’ parallel routines,” he said. “They have gotten much better at that and cleaner, resulting in higher scores.”

The Warriors also have excelled on floor and vault. “Floor and vault continue to be bright spots,” said Strejc.

“Most guys consistently hit their floor routines and score in the 8s and Zack has been getting in the 9s sometimes.

Also, vault is a bright spot with the difficulty of the skills, but guys haven’t been landing consistently. Once they all land though, it will be a really great vault team score.”

Strejc said he’s quite proud of his roster for stepping up when needed.

“So many guys are able to step up and fill spots on varsity and JV when we need them,” he said. “I have not been able to have consistent lineups this year because of a lot of sickness, injuries and other random reasons, but

there always have been guys who are working hard and ready to compete.”

Bailey has made strides with his parallel bar routine. “His routine over the past few weeks has been extremely consistent and clean and he actually would have gotten third place if he would have competed varsity for conference,” the coach pointed out. “He will be a huge asset to the p-bar sectional team as a sophomore.”

Sophomore Isaiah Lewis also was praised for his recent excellence. “Isaiah has been working extremely hard on floor and vault,” said Strejc. “He improved his vault score by getting a flipping vault which makes him a very important part of our vault team.”

Strejc has no qualms about the effort he’s received and the progress he’s witnessed this season. “Each season is different, but I have really loved the tenacity the guys have shown this year having to step up and build a new team identity as we move forward from last season,” he said. “The progress has been good as guys improve their gymnastics by getting better form and execution, which will make transitioning to harder skills a lot easier over the off-season and leading into next year.”

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team split a recent Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division series with Aurora Central Catholic.

In an 11-8 home victory at Plunkett Athletic Complex, The Knights led 5-1 after the second inning, but trailed 7-5 heading into the bottom of the third.

The Knights scored six runs over a three-inning stretch to pull back into the lead. IC Catholic Prep had 10 hits.

Trey Morris had a hit and two RBI. Joey Salvi had a hit and a run scored. Austin Reed had a hit, two runs scored, an RBI and walked three times. Brendan Russ had two hits and drew two walks. Griffen Eichhorn had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Amari Reed went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Matt Sutton had two runs scored, an RBI and three walks.

IC Catholic Prep batters walked 12 times in the game. Morris and Salvi each had a double. Austin Reed stole two bases. The Knights stole five as a team.

Russ was the winning pitcher. He went three innings and struck out one. John Hoffman picked up the save. He went four innings and allowed three hits, no earned runs and struck out two.

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team went on a goal-scoring binge recently.

The Knights scored 19 goals in three victories.

In a 6-3 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Glenbard South, Olivia Hurt, Sophie Zanoni, Bella Leslie, Tessa Langan, Grace Fuller and Demitra DelFiacco each had a goal. Abi Wagner had two assists, while Langan and Hurt each had one assist.

IC Catholic Prep improved to 3-3 in MSC Blue play.

In a 6-3 MSC crossover win against St. Edward, Langan scored four goals, while Hurt had two. Hurt also had three assists, while Langan had two assists. Del Fiacco had one assist.

In a 7-0 MSC crossover win against Guerin Prep, Langan had two goals, while Fuller, Leslie, Katie Hendricks, Caitlin Curtin and Kaitlyn Grady each had one goal.

Zanoni had three assists, while Hurt, Leslie, Tess Reardon and Del Fiacco each had one assist.

Sean Hipskind was seventh in the 300 hurdles at 47.45. Rowell won the 200 in 22.88, while Luke Ricobene was second at 23.33. The Knights were second in the 1,600 relay at 3:41.90.

Tim McCann was fourth in the discus at 116-3 1/2. Rowell won the long jump in 22-0 1/2. Robbie Whelan was eighth at 18-7. Kris Askew was fourth in the triple jump at 3810, while Sean Hipskind was fifth at 38-6 1/2.

Junior Luis Vargas has thrived in the 1,600, while sophomore Angel Rodriguez and senior Jonathon Cabrera have done well in the 400 and the 1,600 relay.

Junior Mike Renc has been strong in the shot put and discus, as has ju-

nior Kevin Jacob in the sprints.

Kelsay has seen the team’s throwers take the next step forward this spring. “The throws have made the biggest improvement,” he said.

“In addition to Mike Renc, juniors Ryan Sheehan and Randall Petrbok have consistently scored high.”

Junior Kevin Jacob is doing well in the 100 and 200. “Kevin has become a force in the 100 and 200 in place of Darrion Conrad, scoring first or second in those events the

last three weeks,” Kelsay noted.

Junior Chris Purdy has overcome injuries and is starting to jump in the long jump “like he did last year,” said Kelsay.

Addison Trail has enjoyed success in its relay events as well. “Our 4-by-400 relay is dominating in the meets so far this year and the 4-by800 consistently scores first and second,” Kelsay pointed out. “Our 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 have been inconsistent due to injuries.”

Overall, Kelsay has seen the team overcome injuries throughout the season. “We struggled at the end of indoor season and early in the outdoor season as we were adjusting from injuries,” he said. “Now we are getting healthy and the experience gained by the underclassmen has allowed them to improve and really help the team.”

Against the Dukes, Kelso had a run scored and a hit. Michaelson scored two runs. Ranieri had two hits and an RBI. Ferguson had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Demobwski had a hit and an RBI. Ferguson doubled, while Kelso tripled.

Eric Grunst, Will Hines and Ruchala pitched in the game. Ruchala took the loss. He allowed no earned runs over the final 1 2/3 innings. Willowbrook pitchers struck out six and gave up four earned runs.

Also, Willowbrook lost 5-2 to Downers Grove North in another WSC crossover game. Downers led 5-0 after three innings.

Willowbrook was limited to three hits in the contest. Michaelson had a hit, as did Trevor Jaloszynski and McDonnell. Willowbrook did not strike

out in the game and drew two walks.

Jack Hines and Jaloszynski each scored a run. Willowbrook had no RBI, but Downers North committed five errors.

Kohrt took the loss. Jack Hines and Will Hines pitched the final four innings and allowed no runs on three hits.

In the JV game, Willowbrook won 3-1 against Downers North. The Warriors had only three hits in the form of two from John Taylor and one from JT Ceh. Taylor, MIntz and Ruchala each scored a run. Nick Sabatino had the team’s only RBI. Taylor and Ceh each had a double.

Brandon Shissler was the winning pitcher. He went three innings and allowed four hits. Grunst started the game.

Willowbrook was 18-6 overall after the Downers North varsity loss. The Warriors were 10-2 in Gold Division play heading into this week’s action against Proviso East.
