Bensenville earns Governor’s Hometown Award Recognized for green initiatives such as recycling, shredding, composting

On Tuesday, April 20, the Village of Bensenville was one of the winners selected as part of the Governor’s Hometown Awards. The Village of Bensenville was recognized for their green initiatives which included the implementation of green energy aggregation,

free mulch programs, a cooking oil drop off bin, holiday light and tree recycling, document shredding, pumpkin compost smash recycling, and several others. The Governor’s Hometown Awards program gives formal recognition to those who contributed

toward projects within their community. These projects are sponsored by local units of government that meet a need and made a definitive impact on the community. This program is administered by the Serve Illinois Commission and the Governor’s

Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. “We are honored to be one of the recipients of the 2021 Governor’s Hometown Awards,” said Village President Frank DeSimone. “Receiving this award highlights the efforts led by the Village of

Bensenville to better our immediate community while also recognizing the importance of protecting our planet. We thank the State of Illinois for this recognition and look forward to creating more innovative programing by building upon this success.”

A special message regarding recent national events

Fenton School District #100 Superintendent

“The last 14 months have been challenging for us all. We were all affected in one way or another by the murder of George Floyd in June 2020 and many of us are reliving those feelings after watching the closing arguments and verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin last week. Meanwhile, we also are processing the release of the Adam Toledo shooting video last week, the death of Daunte Wright, and numerous hate crimes committed against Asian Americans and other people of color. These experiences and feelings are in addition to the stressful COVID-19 pandemic that continues to claim lives everywhere.

“I want you to know we at Fenton High School are here for you. Fenton has always been committed to the social and emotional well-being of all our students and staff and striving to be an anti-racist and anti-bias school district. We encourage students to reach out to their trusted adults for support. We encourage our staff to seek appropriate support as well. “Students who are struggling or who witness inappropriate reactions to any of these stressful situations should contact our Deans Office. No one is alone, and no one should feel unsafe.” James Ongtengco Superintendent

Smashing pumpkins

This youngster has a good time taking a mallet to his Halloween pumpkin at Bensenville’s Pumpkin Smash event last fall. It was just one of several “green” events that captured state-wide attention and earned Bensenville one of the Governor’s Hometown Awards.
