Glenbard East student charged with alleged threat against school

On Thursday, April 21, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced that a 16-year-old male Glenbard East High School student had been charged with allegedly placing a drawing addressed to a teacher in the teacher’s file cabinet depicting an act of violence targeting the school.

The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing recently where Judge Brian Jacobs ordered that the juvenile be released to the custody of his mother on home detention lockdown. The juvenile has been charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct - Threat to a School, a Class 4 Felony. His next court appearance is scheduled

Crestview Garden Club to host 42nd annual plant sale The Crestview Garden Club of Elmhurst annual plant sale will be in full bloom on Saturday, May 14 from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. This year’s sale will be held at a new location at the Depot at Wild Meadows Trace, 511 S. York St., near the Prairie Path, just north of Vallette in Elmhurst.

There will be more than 1,200 plants to choose from and 130-plus varieties that includes sun and shade perennials, natives, herbs, tomatoes, groundcover, shrubs, vines and grasses.

The sale will also feature plants that attract pollinators. Want more butterflies and hummingbirds in your yard? Visit the special butterfly and hummingbird sections filled with Lombardian ad_Lombardian ad 4/9/22 plants that will attract them to your

yard. Most plants average in price from $5 to $10.

As the popularity of houseplants continue to attract more collectors, the sale will also feature hundreds of houseplants for sale and looking for new homes. Many houseplants help purify the air and their presence provides a calming effect.

The sale will also feature vendors selling wind chimes and a beekeeper offering honey. Club members will be available to answer gardening questions and help with plant selection. Personal checks, cash and major credit cards will be accepted for purchases. Sale takes place rain or shine.

District 88 partnerships ensure students are college, career ready In the latest District 88 newsletter, the administration unscored its commitment to making sure students are college and career ready. The District continues to focus on teaching skills and offering learning experiences to achieve that goal through providing multiple and flexible pathways for students.

District 88 partners with colleges, universities and local businesses to expand these opportunities and plans

to continue to enhance these initiatives.

One opportunity is the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Youth Apprenticeship Program, which is available to seniors at Addison Trail and Willowbrook. Through this class, students can earn school credit and receive on-the-job training, all while getting paid. Students interested in the CTE Youth Apprenticeship Program should speak with

Through a collaboration with GPS Education Partners and College of DuPage (COD), seniors in this course meet with Barney to receive credit, training and certification in OSHA 10, along with résumé, interview and soft skills preparation for an apprenticeship placement in Ad-

dison. Apprentices interview at a local company and, once hired, earn an average of $15 an hour. Participants are able to gain experience in: • Manufacturing (general manufacturing, industrial maintenance, CNC, machining, electro-mechanical) • Information technology (software/app/game design, network and security, database management, data science) Students in this course also can qualify for free college credit and

paid job training through COD’s Project Hire-Ed Apprenticeship Program.

Willowbrook High School senior Max Hirsch was recently named his school’s April recipient of the 88’s Best award. Hirsch was recognized during the District 88 Board of Education meeting on April 11. He is pictured (right) at the board meeting with Willowbrook Principal Dan Krause (left). The 88’s Best award honors students for their achievements in and out of the classroom. The award is presented to nine students at each of District 88’s two schools—Willowbrook and Addison Trail—each school year. Hirsch has consistently pursued the most rigorous academic courses available at Willowbrook. When he graduates in May, he will have taken 10 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses, as well as several honors and college-credit-earning courses. Hirsch is an Illinois State Scholar and an inductee of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Math Honor Society, World Language Honor Society and Willowbrook’s social studies honor society—Civitas. He has been named to Willowbrook’s Distinction Honor Roll in each semester of his time at the school. Hirsch has served as a leader and board member in the New Beginnings program, a program in which upperclassmen mentor freshmen and assist them in adjusting to high school. He’s also been a member of Willowbrook’s Student Council, Key Club, Econ Challenge and Math Team. Hirsch was a four-year member of Willowbrook’s boys golf team. He also caddies in the summer at Glen Oak Country Club in Glen Ellyn.

Hirsch plans to study finance and is finalizing his decision as to which college/university he will attend.

“I am very proud of the work we do to protect our planet with numerous environmentally friendly programs being launched over the last few years,” said Village President Frank DeSimone. “Programs like these, coupled with the hard work of our forestry department, play an important part in protecting our community for future generations.”

In 2021, the Village continued its commitment to effective urban forest management by planting 244 trees,

pruning 850, and removing 160 that were dead or dying throughout the community. In addition, the Arboretum at Redmond Recreational Complex was officially opened and we received a Level II Arboreta accreditation. The Village looks forward to continuing these efforts for many years to come.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters. The Arbor Day Foundation was founded in 1972 and has grown to become the largest nonprofit membership organizations with more than one million members, supporters, and partners.

Foster fled the scene and was ultimately traced to Nashville, Tenn. On Jan. 19, 2019, Foster was taken into custody in Nashville. After waiving extradition, Foster was transported to DuPage County.

“Mr. Foster took responsibility for the shooting death of Jerry McCray,” Berlin said. “I offer my condolences to Mr. McCray’s family and friends on their loss. I thank the Roselle Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies … for their efforts in identifying and apprehending Mr. Foster.”

It is alleged that on or about Wednesday, April 20, the teen placed a drawing in the teacher’s file cabinet depicting a character holding a bloody knife with blood seeping out of classrooms with the caption “school stabber at Glenbard East 120 dead.” Wednesday afternoon, authorities became aware of the alleged threat and the teen was taken into custody, where he remained until his hearing Thursday morning.

“Any threat to the well-being of our students, teachers and school personnel will be taken very seriously,” Berlin said. “Students have got to understand that school threats are no joking matter and can have

a chilling effect not just on students, teachers and staff, but also on parents, siblings and the entire community. As I have said in the past, anyone suspected of making a threat, even if made in jest, will be fully investigated and appropriately charged.”

“Teachers can’t teach, and students can’t learn if they instead are concerned about their own personal safety,” Newton said. “We must do all we can to ensure that our schools remain free from violence and threats of violence.”

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Library launches new memory kits Available to those affected by Alzheimer’s, memory loss conditions

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, about 1 in 9 Americans age 65 and older have Alzheimer’s, which amounts to more than 6 million people.

In response to the growing number of people affected by Alzheimer’s and other memory-related conditions, libraries across the country have been developing memory kits for their patrons, and the Addison Public Library is the latest to join the trend.

Addison Public Library cardholders can now check out interactive kits, called memory kits, to help their loved ones stimulate their minds in a fun and engaging way.

Collection Development Coordinator Karen Dini has been leading the project, working with library staff to create themes for each memory kit backpack and curate the items inside.

“The kits are geared towards people who have family members with memory-related issues, or are caregivers for someone with memory-related issues,” said Dini. “The idea is to spur conversation, whether it’s talking about memories that the kits bring out or just spending quality time together.”

The library currently has six memory kits on shelf, each with a unique theme: dogs, cats, outer space, zoos,

the 1950s, and the 1960s. Dini said the library is actively working on cataloging more Memory Kits and will have 15 or 16 kits in total over the next several weeks.

“Other libraries have had really unique ideas for their kits that they put together, so we drew inspiration from some of the kit themes we saw while we were researching,” said Dini.

Future memory kit themes will include cooking, Chicago sports, gardening, and more.

While each memory kit is different, borrowers can expect to find a mix of books, DVDs, music, and ac-

The items inside vary based on the kit’s theme; for example, the dog-themed memory kit includes the book Really Important Stuff My Dog Has Taught Me by Cynthia Copeland, a dogs and puppies memory game, the classic Lassie films, coloring sheets, a CD with songs about dogs, and even a toy dog.

“The backpacks really take the guesswork out of planning engaging activities for someone who has dementia, and each kit has a lot of different aspects to it, so they can be used in a lot of different ways,” said Dini. “We wanted the memory kits to be versatile and open-ended, so that everyone can use the kits however they like and get the most out

of them.”

Dini said it is exciting to see the Library of Things collection expand to include memory kits, and she hopes people take advantage of this new library offering.

“With a variety of items inside each memory kit, people with Alzheimer’s or memory issues can stimulate their brains in a variety of ways,” said Dini. “At best, we hope people feel more connected and engaged while they use the kits, but at the very least, we hope people have fun together.”

Memory kits can be checked out from the Library of Things collection on the second floor of the library. To check out a memory kit, cardholders simply take the entire backpack down to Guest Services and check out the kit like they would borrow a book or a movie.

DuPage CASA recognizes Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, but for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of DuPage County and more than 900 CASA organizations around the country, child abuse prevention is our priority every day.

Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the United States each year.

Children under the age of one year have the highest level of victimization and children growing up in households with domestic violence and drug abuse are at the highest risk of abuse and neglect in their homes.

Preventing child abuse starts with recognizing the importance of strengthening families in our community. Establishing economic support, positive parenting education and quality child care are cited by the CDC as the most effective child abuse prevention strategies.

This month CASA of DuPage County tied blue ribbons at the entrance to the DuPage County Courthouse and posted signage sharing the DCFS hotline number. The organization representatives were joined by the DuPage County Chief Judge Kenneth Popejoy, along with Juvenile Court Judges Anthony Coco and Brian Jacobs, Probate Court Judge James Orel, and Judge Ann Celine Walsh, Presiding Judge of Specialty and Juvenile Courts Division.

The Blue Ribbon Campaign began in the spring of 1989 when Bonnie Finney of Virginia tied a ribbon on her car to acknowledge the loss of her threeyear-old grandson who was a victim of abuse. She encouraged her neighbors to do the same to bring her community together to protect children. The blue ribbon has been the national symbol for child abuse prevention ever since.

CASA of DuPage County encourages everyone in the community to play a role in keeping children safe. Join the effort and tie a blue ribbon to a tree in your neighborhood or wear one on your lapel. Most importantly, if you see something that you think is just not right related to the safety of a child, call the DCFS hotline 1-800-25-ABUSE. CASA of DuPage County is a nonprofit, community organization supporting children who have been abused or neglected by recruiting and training volunteer advocates to speak to their best interests in the court and in the community. The Deal—I can’t prove it, but everyone knows it’s true

By Jim Nowlan Here’s The Deal: Lawyers and judges elevated to the Illinois Supreme Court by the Judicial Nominating Committee of the Cook County Democratic Party are allowed to be the best jurists they can be on 90-95 percent of the cases before them. But, on any cases affecting the Party, such as redistricting reform, they must commit themselves to protect the Party.

That’s The Deal: A good, prestigious job, with a great pension, all in return for turning a blind eye to Lady Justice on those infrequent political cases that affect the Party and its interests, such as pensions, term limits and gerrymandering. Most wannabe jurists consider it worth the trade. They wouldn’t be offered the judgeship if they didn’t.

The Deal is never spoken, of course, in the best tradition of indicted ex-House Speaker Mike Madigan, a state lawmaker for more than half a century, and chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois for years. Winks and nods speak volumes.

And for three decades, indicted Chicago alderman Ed Burke chaired the Party judicial nominating committee. Ed was to the political manner born, you might say. His father was a powerful alderman of long standing. Ed himself has been on the Chicago City Council for more than half a century and, like Madigan, also a Democratic ward committeeman in Chicago, for seemingly forever.

Along the granite corridors of Chicago’s City Hall, everyone still doffs his cap to Ed, with a “Good morning, Mr. Chairman” (a reference to Burke’s longtime, now ex-chairmanship of the Council’s powerful Finance Committee, which has wide-ranging powers, far beyond finance).

The Deal was in obvious play in 2016, when the four Democrats on the seven-member Illinois Supreme Court

blocked a constitutional amendment petition drive signed by 600,000 Illinois voters. Petitioners sought to put on the ballot a proposal that legislative redistricting be conducted by an independent commission.

Surveys showed that 80 percent of voters supported independent mapping.

But no. In a blatantly partisan opinion, Justice Tom Kilbride wrote that the amendment was unconstitutional, preventing voters from having their say. His ludicrous reasoning: The proposal gave some responsibilities to the Illinois Auditor General, a constitutional officer of the Legislature, and that the auditor lacked the staff to carry out such responsibilities!

This, as if modest staffing issues supersede the state Constitution, rather than the other way around.

Insiders tell me that one of the two female justices on the court, Chief Justice Anne Burke (wife of guess who; see above) or Mary Jane Theis, had doubts about the opinion, but ultimately caved to The Deal. Both came up through the system of The Deal.

Nor did opinion author Kilbride recuse himself from hearing the case, even though it was argued before him by Mike Kasper, treasurer of the Democratic Party of Illinois, and Madigan’s elections lawyer. And even though the DPI had just a few years earlier contributed more than $1.5 million to his successful retention bid.

Only in Illinois.

So now, Illinois has among the most preposterously contorted legislative districts in the nation, a disservice to democracy, and to all 8 million Illinois registered voters.

This November we can expunge The Deal, by electing justices who have no ties to the Burke-Madigan Axis of the Democratic Party of Illinois.

A taxing time was had by all It was time to do taxes. What a great day it was!

Everyone loves taxes, especially when they have to pay in which I did, this year. (Did I mention it was a great day?)

I’d let them sit for weeks, well, because I had to pay in and who wants to pay before they have to pay?

But it was time. Almost midApril and I had to get the job done.

I hunkered down on a Saturday and vowed to crunch numbers and embrace the inevitable.

(Many hours later) I was finished—all i’s dotted and t’s crossed—and was ready to e-file.

In the words of Disney’s Elsa, “Let it go, let it go!”

And let it go I did. I pressed send. Off went the 1040. Off went the state forms. I breathed a sigh of relief and thought about pouring a glass of wine.

Before I got the chance, the bing bing of an incoming email stopped my pursuit of fermented grapes. It was from the taxprocessing site.

My income tax return had been rejected.

Many Bensenville residents vehemently oppose the sale of White Pines Golf Course. This group of residents have done their due diligence and have documents through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that Mr. Vallez and the Park District Board have been working on this sale for the past 2 years without the knowledge or

support of Bensenville residents. It has been confirmed by Mr. Vallez that the Park District has spent [a great deal of money] exploring the various development options with regards to this sale.

Mr. Vallez has stated that the Park District has approximately $7 million dollars of capital improvement needs, so why does he need $125 million?

Ho hum.

It seems the number I’d input as my adjusted gross income from 2020 was incorrect. I wasn’t surprised. 2020 was a bit of a poop storm for me. When I filed taxes, I was in a deep fog of grief over the loss of my husband. I’m surprised I got them filed at all.

Last year, I failed to save a digital copy of my return. I have a hard copy, but it’s about 1,700 miles from my current location.

Such is the state of affairs when one spends nearly a year living a fog.

But 2020 is old news. It’s now 2022 and we’re filing for 2021.

And in 2022, for 2021, if you don’t have your AGI for the past year, you can’t file online. It must be done the old fashioned way— with stamps and an envelope. My tax software kindly instructed me to print out (hard copy) my return and mail it via the good and reliable United States Postal Service.

I headed toward my closet, because where do you keep your printer if not in the bedroom closet? Silly question, I know.

While hanging out with my clothes and hangers, I got set to print the first pages of my tax returns. It was then that the printer spoke up, briefly, albeit loudly. We were out of ink.

And that is how I found myself, at 6:30 on a Saturday night, headed to the superstore for printer

ink. I don’t have to tell anyone that the superstore is exactly the place I longed to be at 6:30 p.m. on a Saturday. That place was hopping!

I was on fire.

Well, not on fire, per se, but I felt the hopping spirit—especially with Easter and all.

Ink in hand, I checked out and headed to the car. I could nearly taste the finality of taxes 2021, and it was sweet.

Back in my bedroom closet, I loaded the ink and began printing the 2,000 or so pages needed for my federal and state income tax forms. OK, maybe not 2,000—let’s leave it at a rounded 1,837—or so.

The pages spewed to the floor at my feet in no random order and I bent to pick them up. As I was doing so, I noticed two shoes sitting in front of me. They sat as a pair, but it was clear they were not a pair, which was weird because my shoes normally sit as pairs.

I wondered where the other two mismatched shoes might be.

Then my eyes glanced down at my feet and I got my answer.

I was wearing the other two shoes from that mismatched pair.

They were what I was wearing while at the store buying printer ink just 30 minutes prior.

It was now 8 p.m. on a Saturday evening. I finally let the printing commence. When it was done, I bundled everything up and packed the pages neatly into addressed envelopes—ready to send. I’d bring them to the post office in the morning, but for now the job was done.

It was time for a glass of wine.

More than 125 people participated in Willowbrook High School’s annual Trivia Night. The Willowbrook Music Booster Club held the event in the school cafeteria on April 9. Willowbrook math teacher Ed Sullivan emceed the event and kept the crowd entertained during an evening filled with information and facts. The event, which also included raffle baskets and a Pick-A-Prize game, served as a fundraiser for the Willowbrook Music Booster Club. This year’s Trivia Night raised more than $5,000, which will be utilized for student scholarships, grants and other causes supported by Willowbrook’s music department.

On April 7, 13 Addison Trail students in science teacher Daniel Fernandez’s (AP) Environmental Science class visited the A.J. LaRocca Wastewater Treatment Plant. Students learned about the engineering that goes into cleaning wastewater and saw firsthand the steps required to turn wastewater into clean, reusable water. The trip served to expand the students’ understanding of environmental sustainability and how those practices are implemented within the community.
