Lombard man accused of murder following incident at Elmhurst bar On Tuesday, April 13, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Mike Ruth announced that a Lombard man had been charged with murder following an altercation at an Elmhurst bar last Saturday night.

Ronald Dunbar, 55, of Lombard, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set bond at $500,000.

Dunbar has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder.

On April 10, 2021 at approximately 6:09 p.m., Elmhurst police officers were dispatched to the Spring Inn, located at 552 South Spring Road, for a disturbance.

Upon their arrival, officers observed a broken front window at the establishment.

At approximately 6:16 p.m., officers received a call of an unconscious individual, later identified as Karl Bomba, at a park approximately one mile south of the bar.

Officers responded to the call and found Bomba unconscious and not breathing.

He was immediately transported to a local hospital. On April 12, Karl Bomba succumbed to a stab wound he sustained and was pronounced dead at Elmhurst hospital.

Following an investigation into the matter led by the Elmhurst Police Department, it is alleged that an altercation between Bomba, Dunbar and a third individual outside the bar turned violent at which time Dunbar stabbed Bomba once in the chest with a pocketknife. A short time after the incident, Dunbar voluntarily went to the Elmhurst Police Department to be interviewed. Subsequently, Dunbar was arrested and charged.

On Saturday, April 10, at approximately 6:10 p.m., Elmhurst Police responded to 552 S. Spring in Elmhurst for a disturbance that occurred inside the Spring Inn. Shortly after arriving on scene, police received an additional call for assistance to respond to the area of Spring and Butterfield for a victim, who had been injured during the disturbance. The victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital but was later pronounced dead. Elmhurst Police have Ronald Dunbar, 55, of Lombard in custody as a suspect in the incident.

County says one in four residents fully vaccinated against COVID-19 tered to date.

“Today, we have reached an exciting community milestone in DuPage County’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts with one in four residents now fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” said Karen Ayala, Executive Director of DuPage County Health Department. “We are very grateful for everyone’s continued commitment to vaccinating eligible residents as quickly and equitably as possible.”

Over the past two weeks, the number of COVID-19 cases reported per

day in DuPage County increased by 42 percent with a seven-day rolling average of 275 cases reported through Apr. 12. As of Apr. 10, the test positivity seven-day rolling average in DuPage County stands at seven percent. These increases indicate a rise in COVID-19 activity throughout the county. Of further concern, COVID-19-related hospitalizations are rising as well. Today, local hospitals reported 121 COVID-19 related hospitalizations in daily census reports, representing a more than dou-

bling of daily hospitalizations and tripling of ICU admissions (now at 27) reported since March 12.

The highest case increases are observed in youth aged 5-19 years as well as adults in the 20 to 39-yearold and 40 to 59-year-old age groups.

Additionally, DCHD is closely monitoring reports of COVID-19 variants in the county. These variants are classified as COVID-19 variants of concern (VOC) as they spread more easily and quickly than other variants and likely cause more severe disease based on hospitalizations and case-fatality rates. Based on national and state-level genomic surveillance efforts to date, 65 cases of B.1.1.7, six cases of P.1, and three cases of B.1.427/B.1.429 variants have been identified in DuPage County. In Illinois, 794 cases of B.1.1.7, 164 cases of P.1, and 80 cases of B.1.427/429 variants have been reported as of Apr. 13.

Last week, DCHD received 20,000 first vaccine doses, which was a decrease of 1,110 doses from last week.

State testing Fenton continues to administer state exams. ACCESS testing was completed for English Language Learners on Monday, April 12. Man who hijacked car at gunpoint in Oak Brook Center gets 17 years On Saturday, April 17, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police James Kruger announced that a Chicago man had been sentenced to 17 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for hijacking a 67-yearold woman’s car at gunpoint in the spring of 2018. Darnell Anderson, 29, of Chicago, appeared in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay, who handed down the sentence. On Feb. 19, Anderson entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, a Class X Felony.

On March 28, 2018 at 9:36 a.m., the victim was sitting in her Honda Civic before going to work at the mall. While she was in her car, a Toyota Camry, which was reported stolen out of Maywood, blocked her in a parking spot. A male, later identified as Anderson, got out of the Toyota, opened the victim’s driver side door, displayed a gun and demanded that she exit the vehicle.

The woman got out of the car and began to run, but Anderson caught up to her and took her purse before returning to the victim’s car.

At that point, both the Toyota and

the victim’s Honda fled the scene.

The victim immediately contacted the Oak Brook Police Department who began an investigation into the hijacking. Later the same day, the stolen Camry was involved in a high-speed pursuit with the Chicago Police Department and the Illinois State Police which ended with the Camry involved in a collision.

Those involved in the crash informed police that they had bought the car from Anderson. On March 29, 2018, a search warrant executed at Anderson’s home on an unrelated matter yielded keys to his victim’s Civic. He was taken into custody and transported to the Oak Brook Police Department at that time.

“Judge MacKay’s 17-year sentence sends the message to any would-be carjackers that if you commit such a crime in DuPage County, you will be met with a significant prison sentence if convicted,” Berlin said. “Thankfully, the victim in this case was not physically injured.”

Anderson will be required to serve 50% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

Addison resident accused of misusing COVID-19 funds FBI alleges DiStefano diverted with $385,000, bought luxury automobiles

Last week, the Independent received a report indicating that the owner of an Addison business was under federal investigation allegedly for obtaining funds earmarked for COVID-19 relief and spending the funds on a line of luxury automobiles.

Francesco DiStefano stands accused of fraudulently receiving more than $1 million out of COVID-19 relief loans, according to recently unsealed court documents obtained by the Chicago Tribune. According to an FBI search warrant, DiStefano used about $385,000 over a period of about 30 days in 2020 to purchase the following vehicles: a 2016 Lamborghini Huracan, a 2020 Range Rover Evoque, a 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera, and a 2017 Maserati Ghibli.

The purchases were allegedly made through DiStefano’s business, DiStefano Enterprises LLC, a payment processing business licensed in Montana.

The Tribune reported that DiStefano allegedly bought several of the vehicles on the same day that COVID-19 relief loan funds were deposited in the business account.

The vehicles have been seized by the FBI as part of the investigation and DiStefano has not been charged with any wrongdoing at this time.

DeStefano told the Tribune that the fraud allegations were not true.

The information obtained by the Tribune said DiStefano had applied for a $198,000 PPP loan in May of 2020. His application indicated that he had 14 employees and an average payroll of $80,000 per month, but according to the affidavit obtained by the Tribune, state records from both Illinois and Montana show no wages were paid at all in 2019 or 2020. In addition, DiStefano reportedly collected personal unemployment benefits which were deposited into the same account.

Court documents further allege that DiStefano received two other PPP loans for two other companies connected to him – West Coast POS and National POS. Both of these loans used the same method of overstating the payroll and revenue figures in order to obtain them. The loans amounted to about $1.2 million and the funds were soon transferred to DiStefano from the other two companies.

According to the obtained affidavit, on the date one of the transfers took place, DiStefano purchased the Lamborghini for $195,000, using a corporate credit card for $100,000 of the purchase. The report said he used a cashier’s check for the remaining $95,000.

The following day, DiStefano reportedly purchased the Maserati, which was under lease to him since 2017. He used a $41,000 cashier’s check for that purchase, according to the FBI.

Bill clarifies anesthetists’ role, increases access to health care, and limits costs

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored what we in health care see every day: When your health is at stake as a patient, you deserve and demand the highest-quality, safest care possible—no matter where you live, how old you are, or where you are seeking that care.

We represent the Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and our members are Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. No matter how serious your ailment, you face some risks when you are under anesthesia care.

You deserve the best.

We are supporting Senate Bill 2566, sponsored by Sen. Melinda Bush in the Illinois Senate. As state legislators debate this proposal in these final weeks of the spring legislative session in Springfield, we think it’s important our patients understand what this issue is really about.

Senate Bill 2566 clarifies the law and treats nurse anesthetists as all other Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). While nurse anesthetists provide the highest-quality, safest anesthesia care possible every day around the state, some hospitals interpret current Illinois law to require a physician anesthesiologist to be “physically present” while we do our work with patients, even though nearly one-third of the state has no physician anesthesiologist practicing there.

The lack of access to care and higher costs are critical points for this legislation: • 90 percent of Illinois receives anesthesia care either only or mostly from a nurse anesthetist. We are trained to handle all of the complications that arise during an anesthetic, and more than 15 years of research has come to one conclusion: There is no difference in the safety of care provided by physician anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists.

• 31 Illinois counties have no registered anesthesia providers, and 74 percent of their surrounding counties have care provided either exclusively or predominantly by nurse anesthetists.

• The federal government’s Medicare program reimburses anesthesia services at the same level for physician anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists, because it considers the quality and safety of care to be the same.

• Anesthesia costs 25 percent more when physician anesthesiologists direct nurse anesthetists, and care provided only by physician anesthesiologists (used in less than 4 percent of cases) costs more than double the care when CRNAs work with surgeons. The costs of physician anesthesiologists’ salaries on top of CRNAs make anesthesia care

unnecessarily expensive.

Our opponents are trying troubling scare tactics about our training and this legislation to throw us off track. But we will not be discouraged.

Patients are safe under CRNA care, as Medicare insurance reimbursement rates confirm. Senate Bill 2566 simply treats nurse anesthetist care like all other APRNs in Illinois, and will encourage more CRNAs to work in the many counties where physician anesthesiologists will not: rural Illinois and in non-hospital settings. No other health care professional’s practice area would be affected by this clarifying change for CRNAs. Illinois is now among only a handful of states that still require physician anesthesiologists to be physically present while CRNAs do this work. If it works for nearly 45 other states and all other APRNs, we are confident it can work for nurse anesthetists and their patients, too.

CRNAs are a critical part of the medical care we all depend on Illinois every day. This legislation simply clarifies the law to allow us to provide the high-quality, safe care in more counties at lower costs for the health care system. Please join us in support of Senate Bill 2566 for better health care in Illinois.

Love is for certain but new reality is beyond difficult

I wanted you, and I had you. It was beyond wonderful. But you had to leave and now I am alone.

It was so comfortable between us. There was never any question of tomorrow. When I called, you answered. When you texted, I texted back. We never doubted one another’s loyalty.

You were there for the birth of our four children (and the conception for that matter — ha!). We raised them together. Family was our everything.

You were my everything. You gave us your everything.

You were always there in the face of adversity. When I got a flat tire, you showed up to fix it. When I got in a fender bender, you dropped everything and arrived before the police. You had my back.

And I had yours. I stood by your side no matter what the adversity.

I never would have considered anything but you and me. Us together. It was the way it was supposed to be.

We both knew and understood that.

You got sick and you died.

I didn’t believe it was going to happen. Looking back, I should have seen you slowly sinking, but I guess I didn’t want to see it. I couldn’t see it.

This separation from you is testing me on every level of my psyche.

On every level of my being. I am incomplete without you, yet I need to learn to be complete. Or at least pretend I’m complete, and we both know I’m not good at pretending.

But for now it’s what I have to do.

For me. For you. For us. I believe it’s what we planned. It’s what I promised you. And I try to never go back on my promises.

AAG holds virtual spring exhibit Margaret Bucholz takes ‘Best in Show’

The Addison Center for the Arts is currently hosting the Addison Art Guild’s Virtual Spring Show on its web site at addisoncenterforthearts. org. The ongoing exhibit features 31 works of diverse media by 13 AAG artists. Each artist submitted one to three pieces for display and was eligible for one award each from the judge.

Margaret Bucholz won Best in Show for an intimate 12” x 9” colored-pencil portrait on black paper titled Mom Doing Sudoku in Barcelona.

This year’s judge was Chris Hughes, who awarded one Best in Show, two First Place, two Second Place, and two Merit Award ribbons to seven artists. Visit the virtual exhibit to see the judge’s comments on each of the winning art works.

She has been participating in diverse civic art programs from custom garden plots to artist street banners. She produced a virtual exhibition of her own work for the Wheaton Library

and a group show for The DuPage Art League. Margaret has led zoom workshops and produced YouTube videos teaching art techniques.

More recently, she has safely met in person with small groups of students at Addison Park District’s Remote Learning Center.

What should people with diabetes know about COVID-19?

About one in 10 Americans have diabetes and about one in three have prediabetes, according to a 2020 National Diabetes Statistics Report.

In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin and in type 2 diabetes, the body is unable to use insulin properly. Insulin is the hormone needed to extract glucose, or blood sugar, from the bloodstream into the cells of the body to use for energy.

As a result, blood glucose levels rise higher than normal.

During a COVID-19 infection, blood glucose levels can be particularly difficult to control, and in turn, high blood sugars can interfere with the body’s ability to fight the infection.

Viral infections like COVID-19 can also increase inflammation in people with diabetes and make it more difficult to recover.

While there is not enough data to show if people with diabetes are more likely to contract COVID-19 than the general population, those with diabetes who get the virus are at increased risk for complications, especially if blood sugars are not under good control.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is ample evidence that people

with type 2 diabetes (the most common type) are at increased risk for severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19. Based upon what we know at this time, people with type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes may also be at higher risk for more severe illness.

In addition, having other health conditions, such as obesity or heart disease, along with the diabetes, can put someone at an even greater risk of getting seriously ill from COVID-19.

Older people are also at higher risk of complications if they get the virus.

What should someone do if they have diabetes and develop COVID-19?

When sick with any viral infection, and especially COVID-19, people with diabetes face an increased risk of dehydration and uncontrolled blood sugars. It’s very important to drink plenty of fluids. If it’s difficult, have small sips every 15 minutes or so throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Make sure to have at least a 30-day supply of medications, including insulin.

Also, call the doctor for instructions on how to monitor blood sugars and adjust for changes during recovery. Check blood sugar extra times

throughout the day and night, including first thing in the morning and two hours after eating. Let your doctor know about rising trends.

Rising blood sugars may be due to hormones that are released by the body to help the body fight illness.

As the blood sugars rise, this increases the amount of medication or insulin needed to control blood sugars.

Insulin is particularly important for type 1 diabetics since they need insulin to live.

If the body doesn’t have enough insulin it starts breaking down fat as fuel, which produces ketones. When too many ketones are produced too fast, they can cause diabetic ketoacidosis.

People with diabetes who feel that they are sick should follow these steps, even if blood sugars are in target range: • Continue taking medications for diabetes.

• Test blood sugars every four hours and make note of them.

• Drink extra non-caloric beverages.

• Weigh in every day, losing weight may be a sign of rising blood sugars.

• Do temperature checks every morning and evening.

In addition, if they experience any

of the following emergency warning signs, seek medical attention immediately: • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest • New confusion • Inability to wake or stay awake • Bluish lips or face.

How can people with diabetes protect themselves?

No matter what type of diabetes someone has, those with existing diabetes-related health problems are likely to have worse outcomes if they contract the coronavirus than people with diabetes who are otherwise healthy. People can lower their risk of getting very ill from COVID-19 if their diabetes is well-controlled.

Taking the standard precautions to avoid infection are essential, as well as controlling blood sugar through diet, exercise, monitoring and medication. Here are some tips for diabetics during the COVID-19 pandemic: 1. Get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Having diabetes places someone at an increased risk for complications if they contract COVID-19. The vaccine can help prevent severe illness from COVID-19.

2. Manage diabetes wisely. Take

medications as directed to keep blood sugars under control. Stay in close communication with the doctor if feeling ill or with any concerns.

3. Wash hands often and wear a mask in public.

4. Practice physical distancing.

Stay at least 6 feet away from others outside of the household. Avoid large gatherings of people. Consider using mail-order prescription services and grocery delivery services.

5. Be prepared if you do get sick.

Keep a supply of fever-reducing medications, like acetaminophen (Tylenol) in your home.

6. Have up-to-date supplies of diabetic devices and prescriptions (at least a 30-day supply). Stock up on insulin supplies, glucose testing supplies, ketone test strips, glucose tablets and up-to-date prescriptions.

7. Eat healthy. Choose foods that are good sources of protein, frozen vegetables as well as non-perishable forms of healthy foods, such as whole grain pastas, brown rice and protein sources.

8. Exercise. Being active makes the body more sensitive to insulin, which can help people better manage diabetes.

DeLuca responded he was “not aware of anything that would affect anything of that nature.”

“I’m certainly not going to act like (a) judge here and decide to make a ruling on whether something is constitutional or not,” he said.

“I’ll certainly leave that for the court, but adding this provision in statute, I believe is constitutional,” he added.

The bill passed the House Executive Committee April 14 by a 12-0 vote.

Illinois will now provide Medicaid benefits to eligible mothers for up to 12 months postpartum, a major extension from the previous 60-day limit.

Gov. JB Pritzker made the announcement April 13 after a waiver submitted in 2019 by the state to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services was recently approved.

“Every mother in Illinois deserves access to quality healthcare following the birth of a child, regardless of their income level,” Pritzker said in a release. “I’m proud to announce Illinois is now the first state in the nation to offer eligible mothers 12 months of postpartum care coverage through Medicaid.”

According to the release, the measure was pursued specifically to address the significant health disparities in maternal mortality and morbidity between Black women and their white peer groups. The Illinois Department of Public Health developed a report in 2018 that found Black women were six times more likely to die of a pregnancy related condition, with a lack of care continuity and coordination contributing to over 90 percent of preventable pregnancy-related deaths in that demographic.

As a result, IDPH recommended the Medicaid extension, which was passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Pritzker in 2019 before the state formally applied to the federal government.

Women with incomes up to 208 percent of the federal poverty level set by the federal Department of Health and

Human Services will have continuous Medicaid eligibility 12 months postpartum.

“It’s a good first step,” state Rep. Mary Flowers, D-Chicago, said in an interview. “I was hoping to have it expanded to 5 years because there’s a lot of studies out there that shows just because 12 months passed it doesn’t mean the woman’s body has healed.”

All child-bearing age women should have access to quality health care, Flowers said, and she stressed that a time limit could not be placed on a mother’s recovery from childbirth.

Flowers sponsored legislation in 2019 to create the Task Force on Infant and Maternal Mortality Among African Americans. With assistance from IDPH, whose director serves on the task force, it works to establish best practices to decrease infant and maternal mortality.

The task force was set to release its first report Dec. 1, 2020 and every December annually after that.

However, according to Flowers, the group missed its initial deadline due to the COVID-19 pandemic and gave lawmakers a partial report following the start of the new General Assembly.

Flowers said the task force will deliver a full report soon and based on its findings she plans to draft legislation to further expand Medicaid benefits for mothers.

“I want to thank the governor for a good beginning of extending coverage under Medicaid, and I look forward to working with him to extend the program indefinitely,” Flowers said. “Let the doctors decide what’s in the best interest of the woman.”

The statewide unemployment rate in Illinois fell three-tenths of a percentage point in March, to 7.1 percent, as the daily count of new COVID-19 cases and the case positivity rate appeared to be leveling.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said April 15 that preliminary numbers show employers added 32,200 nonfarm jobs during the month, with the biggest gains showing up in the leisure and hospitality sector, which took the biggest hit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other industries posting gains included construction, and business and professional services. The information sector, which includes the media, financial activities and government employment, all posted modest job losses.

“The data is a positive step in the right direction in restoring the workforce a year after the COVID-19 pandemic devastated state and national economies and left thousands jobless,” Deputy Gov. Dan Hynes said in a statement. “While there is still more work to recover from the effects of this virus, the Pritzker administration remains fully committed to supporting claimants and dislocated workers and getting our economy back on track.”

The preliminary estimates reflect activity the week of Friday, March 12. The preliminary jobs numbers for February that were released last month were revised upwards to reflect the addition of 37,300 jobs that month, although the estimated unemployment rate in February was unchanged, at 7.4 percent.

IDES also reported that first-time unemployment claims rose during the week that ended April 10 to 18,986, a 17 percent increase from the prior week. But that also reflected an 87 percent decline from the same week a year ago, when 140,787 workers filed initial claims.

The U.S. Department of Labor reported that 238,016 were receiving continuing unemployment benefits during the week that ended April 3, down 3.4 percent from the week before.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers are backing legislation that seeks to modernize the way the Illinois State Police processes and issues Firearm Owners Identification cards and Concealed Carry Licenses, a change that supporters say would speed up the

Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, in partnership with the Illinois Association for Behavioral Health, is sponsoring House Resolution 131 which advocates for prescribed medication for addiction treatment be administered to incarcerated Illinoisans.

“This resolution sheds light on life-saving issues and I’ll continue to be an advocate for Illinoisans who struggle every day with internal battles,” said Conroy. “It is my hope that the pandemic highlights the importance of proper mental healthcare in Illinois, especially for those who are often left behind by society.

“I encourage every county in Illinois to adopt permanent policies to allow any person with a mental health related disorder to receive life-saving addiction treatment medication while under county jurisdiction.”

Conroy’s House Resolution 131 was recently filed in response to a patient at the DuPage County Jail being unjustly denied access to her life-saving prescribed medication.

The DuPage County Jail now intends to provide the prescribed, life-saving medication during the patient’s stay at its facility.

Medication Assisted Treatment, or MAT, is the use of medications in conjunction with behavioral therapy as part of a long-term treatment regimen. Sadly, a stigma still pervades correctional facilities today that does not take mental healthcare seriously enough, as evidenced by this lifeor-death matter that unfolded at the DuPage County Jail this year.

“Establishing a statewide standard and mandate on medication-assisted treatment for inmates with substance use disorders in all 102 Illinois county jails would be a gold standard of best practice to reduce both recidivism and overdose deaths after release from jail,” said Illinois Association for Behavioral Health CEO Jud DeLoss. “That’s the scientific record speaking.”

Senate Bill 1165, and its companion, House Bill 745, would essentially turn FOID cards and Concealed Carry Licenses into a single card so when someone renews their Concealed Carry License, their FOID card would automatically renew.

It would also provide for automatic renewals for people who voluntarily agree to submit fingerprints.

And it calls on ISP to develop an internet portal in which state, local and federal law enforcement agencies could access information about people whose FOID cards have been revoked or suspended.

“What this would do is, it really would modernize the FOID card,” Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, lead sponsor of the House bill, said during a news conference April 14. “This is an initiative of the Illinois State Police, and eventually we will have digital FOID cards, which I guess wouldn’t be a card at all, would it? It would be on your phone.”

ISP Director Brendan Kelly said the agency was inundated with new and renewal FOID card applications last year, which he attributed in part to the “social tensions caused by civil unrest and the global pandemic.”

From 2017 to 2020, he said, FOID card applications grew 167 percent, from roughly 166,000 to 460,000.

The surge in applications over the last year stretched ISP’s resources,

resulting in a massive backlog of applications that have not been processed within the required 30-day time frame.

“And really, I tell people that other than unemployment issues, FOID issues are the biggest calls I get in my office,” said Sen. David Koehler, D-Peoria, lead sponsor of the Senate bill.

Kelly said the agency has made significant progress in reducing that backlog, primarily by hiring additional staff and improving internal processes to be more efficient, but he said the entire system needs to be modernized to meet current demands.

“We need the support of the General Assembly to push this over the edge,” he said. “We need the support of the General Assembly to implement these measures that will help us finally turn the corner and bring this system into the 21st century.”

The bill had support from at least five Republican lawmakers as cosponsors as of April 14.

Gun safety advocates, on the other hand, said in a statement that the bill does very little to improve public safety, mainly because it does not include provisions such as universal background checks and required fingerprint checks for all gun purchases.

“Senator Koehler’s gun lobby-backed bill guts real universal background checks in exchange for

nothing,” Kathleen Sances, president of Gun Violence Prevention PAC Illinois, said in a statement.

She noted that current law requires unlicensed gun dealers to see a valid FOID card but does not require them to run background checks to verify a potential buyer’s mental health or criminal history.

Kelly, however, defended Illinois’ current FOID card system, noting that in calendar year 2020 alone, more than 15,000 FOID cards were revoked and more than 5,100 unlawful attempts to purchase firearms were stopped.

FOID, concealed carry permits extended again The Illinois State Police has given another 150-day extension to people whose Firearms Owners Identification cards or Concealed Carry Licenses have expired due to a backlog in processing renewal applications.

A panel of state lawmakers gave approval April 13 to that emergency rule after ISP officials assured them that the agency had made significant progress toward clearing a backlog of renewal applications.

that we are starting to bend the curve in our direction.”

Under the emergency rule, a FOID card or CCL that has expired since the start of the pandemic is still considered valid as long as the holder has applied for renewal, paid the required fees, and the card is not subject to revocation, meaning the person has not committed an offense that would otherwise disqualify them from holding the permit.

Yvette Loizon, ISP’s general counsel, said that in the month of March alone, the agency received 14,847 renewal applications, and it approved 67,847 applications, the largest number of approvals in a single month in more than a year.

Warriors close out home season with a win over Morton STAFF REPORT

The Willowbrook football team played its third and final home game of its abbreviated season on Friday night. The Warriors beat Morton 49-19 to improve to 4-1.

Willowbrook earned its victory over Morton one week after suffering its first loss of the season—a 25-23 setback at York.

The Warriors were supposed to finish the spring season with this Friday’s game at Proviso East. Issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, have sidelined the Pirates, along with a few other West Suburban Conference teams, during the current season. At the beginning of this week, the Warriors were searching for an alternate opponent for their April 23 season finale.

“It’s been a bizarre year,” said Willowbrook head coach Nick Hildreth after Friday’s win. “This whole group of kids has endured a lot over the last year and change. They’ve handled it so well. They’ve played so hard. It’s fun to be a part of.”

Willowbrook scored three first-quarter touchdowns to take an early 21-0 lead over Morton. The Warriors’ lead grew to 35-0 in the second quarter. The Mustangs scored a touchdown in the final minute of the second period to cut Willowbrook’s halftime lead to 35-7.

The Warriors scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to build a 49-7 lead. The advantage of at least 40 points triggered a running clock for the remainder of the game.

Senior Rajee Bey-Moore scored Willowbrook’s first touchdown of the

night on a 16-yard run with 10:21 left in the opening quarter. Junior Josh Brown broke a 36-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter to push the lead to 13-0. Junior Izabelle Manning added the second of her seven extra-point kicks to raise the lead to 14-0. Brown added one more touchdown run—a 22-yard burst—in the opening quarter.

Junior Evan Stubblefield scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to extend Willowbrook’s lead to 27-0 in the second quarter. Brown’s third touchdown of the game—a 5-yard run—raised the lead to 34-0 with about three minutes left in the first half.

Morton scored its only touchdown of the first half moments after the Warriors failed to execute a clean snap on a punt play. Morton’s drive began inside Willowbrook’s 5-yard line. The Mustangs then scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. The extra-point kick cut the Warriors’ lead to 35-7.

Brown’s fourth touchdown run of the night—a 3-yard run with more than nine minutes to play in the third quarter—helped the Warriors build their lead to 42-7.

Through five games, Brown has scored 19 touchdowns.

Bey-Moore delivered his second touchdown of the night on a 38-yard run that extended the lead to 48-7.

Manning’s kick gave the Warriors a 49-7 lead with 7:01 left in the third quarter.

Morton scored a touchdown late in the third quarter to reduce Willowbrook’s lead to 49-13. The Mustangs closed out the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left in the game.

The Willowbrook girls volleyball team improved to 7-2 overall and 5-0 in West Suburban Gold Conference play with last week’s 25-10, 25-14 victory over Addison Trail in Villa Park.

The Warriors honored the team’s seniors immediately after the April 15 win over the Blazers. Willowbrook will finish its abbreviated spring season this week.

Junior Katie Linnig provided 11 assists, six digs and one ace for the Warriors in the match against their District 88 rival. Freshman Calli Kenny delivered nine kills, 10 digs and one assist. Senior Grace Reckamp bashed nine kills and added five assists and two digs. Junior Elizabeth

Bruschuk contributed 11 digs, three assists and one ace. Senior Taris Thornton had two blocks and one kill.

Willowbrook’s seniors are: Stephanie Dasbach, Noelle Faulk, team manager Lindsey King, Alejandra Lopez Sahagun, Reckamp and Thornton. Each senior walked to the center of the court with her family members to greet head coach Irene Mason during the post-match ceremony.

The Willowbrook baseball team, which did not play in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, opened its 2021 season with last week’s West Suburban Gold Conference game against Downers Grove South. The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team continued its undefeated ways with a pair of recent victories.

The Knights moved to 14-0 overall and 11-0 in Metro Suburban Conference action after a 25-7, 25-9 vic-

tory over Aurora Christian.

Sophie Hurt had 10 assists, seven digs, one block and one ace, while Jess Sobon had eight kills, two digs and one ace. Lucy Russ had four kills and six digs, while Ava Falduto had seven digs and three assists. Isabella Muti had three kills, two digs and

seven aces. Allie Geiger had one kill and three blocks.

Earlier, the Knights were 25-15, 26-24 winners over Bishop McNamara in conference play. Hurt had 16 assists, six digs, two blocks and three aces. Sobob had nine kills, nine digs and one ace. Russ had four kills,

eight digs, one ace and one block.

Claire Wagner had two kills, while Kristen Brachmann had one kill and two digs. Falduto had nine digs, one ace, three assists and one kill. Muti had two kills and one dig, while Geiger had one block.

Knights coach Nancy Kerrigan said there are many factors that contribute to putting together a successful season, “but this group of young ladies is truly special,” she said. “Their consistency in the way they play has been one of the biggest keys to our success so far. They have steadily stepped up their play match after match. They are grateful for the chance to have a season, and they really enjoy each other, which has translated to a lighthearted determination that I have never felt from a team like this.”

Kerrigan said, with her senior group in mind, she piled as many matches onto the schedule as possible during the COVID-19-moved and -shortened season. “If given the choice, most athletes would say they prefer to play over practicing,” she 24 Dukes to continue athletic careers said. “My goal was to give them as at collegiate level many experiences with their teammates and friends on the court competing, since most won’t continue to play after high school.”

On the flip-side, IC Catholic Prep has three freshmen (Falduto, Russ and Geiger) in the starting lineup this season.

“Having very few practices to develop them, they have had to learn in live play,” Kerrigan noted. “Our success is a testament to their coachability. In addition, it speaks volumes about the leadership and patience of the players who surround them on the court.”

Two big strengths, Kerrigan noted, have been the aforementioned consistency and pace. “Because of the experience and athleticism of the players on the court, we can play at a much faster tempo, giving our opponents less time to react and adjust,” she said. “And we are executing so consistently, some of our opposing coaches have described us as a machine.”
