Police and Emergency Management Headquarters awarded Green Building Certification BENSENVILLE — On April 5 the Bensenville Police & Emergency Management Headquarters was been awarded LEED® Gold. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved envi-

ronmental and human health performance.

“We are honored to receive this prestigious certification and lead by example with our many “green” initiatives here in Bensenville,” said Village President Frank Soto. “We are very proud to have completed this project on time, under budget, and without any additional taxes or costs to our residents.”

The new 47,000 square foot state of the art headquarters is an adaptive reuse of a blighted industrial building that was vacant since 1998. It replaces the 13,500 square foot Public Safety Building at 100 North Church Road built in 1972 that had gone past its functional lifecycle.

The new Headquarters addresses the numerous func-

tional and operational issues with the previous Public Safety Building. The new Headquarters is ADA compliant, allows reports to be taken in private, provides for a safer environment for officers, prisoners and the general public, facilitates modern and professional police investigations, operations and training, and includes a large multi-purpose room that allows

for more interaction with the public at meetings and that also serves as a fully equipped emergency operations center.

In an effort to support local business the Village made extra effort to advertise the bidding opportunities locally which resulted in awarding nearly $1 million dollars of the project to

The Village also aggressively sought out cost saving opportunities and programs to reduce the Village’s out-ofpocket costs as much as possible. By staggering the bond issuances the Village had the ability to obtain Qualified Energy Conservation Bond (QECB) rebates through the DuPage County DCEO for more than $6 million of the overall bond issuance. By delaying a

year for the second tract of bonds the Village achieved savings of $1.25 million due to the issued bonds being bank qualified.

As a result of being a green community and building the police station to LEED Gold standards, making it over 20% more efficient than a standard building of its size, the Village will receive a 70% federal rebate on all interest paid for these bonds. This drops

the effective interest rate on the $6.185 million bonds to only 1.46% (from 4.88%). Savings are estimated to be at a minimum $550,000 and can grow to $1,500,000 by time the bonds are paid out. The Village has also been awarded

$117,788 in grants to reimburse energy efficiency upgrades through DCEO’s Illinois Energy Now program. Illinois Clean Energy has awarded $25,000 for the LEED Gold Certification process already underway.

ELMHURST — On average, Illinois women employed full time, year round are paid just 79 cents for every dollar paid to men – a yearly pay gap of $10,754.

That means they lose nearly $20 billion every year – dollars that could strengthen the state economy as well as the financial security of families throughout Illinois.

This was one of the findings in a new analysis conducted by the National Partnership for Women & Families, released last week.

It’s just as bad or worse for minority women. The report said for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men in Illinois, African American women are paid 64 cents; Latinas, 48 cents; and, Asian women 86 cents.

If the gap between women’s and men’s wages in Illinois were eliminated, each woman

Illinois is not the only state with a wage gap. The analysis listed 10 states with the largest cents-on-the-dollar wage gaps in the country

(from largest to smallest).

They are: Louisiana Utah Wyoming West Virginia North Dakota Alabama Idaho Oklahoma Montana Michigan “It is unacceptable that the wage gap has persisted, punishing the country’s women and families for decades,” said Debra L. Ness, president of the National Partnership for Women and Families. “Some state lawmakers have taken steps to address the issue by passing legislation to combat discriminatory pay practices and provide other workplace supports. It is past time for federal lawmakers to do the same. We need Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, which is a common sense proposal that has languished for much too long.”

Currently before Congress, the Paycheck Fairness Act would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act, help to break patterns of pay discrimination, and establish stronger workplace protections for women.

Report finds business climate thriving in DuPage County Area is prime location with lowest unemployment in region

LISLE — Choose DuPage has released its findings from their 2015 Annual Economic Indicators Report confirming DuPage County as a thriving business climate due to its low unemployment, skilled workforce, high quality of life and growing business sector.

The findings reinforce DuPage County’s attractiveness for job creators and entrepreneurs at a time when the state and communities like Chicago struggle with high taxes, pension challenges and a hostile business climate.

The report was compiled from Choose DuPage member data and professional economic data provider EMSI. Highlights of 2015 economic indicators report: • DuPage County has the lowest unemployment rate at 4.5% in the Chicagoland region, and far below the state at 6.4%; • DuPage County sales tax receipts have increased by 5.5% reaffirming a strong and welcoming business climate; • DuPage County‘s largest and fastest growing industries include healthcare, retail, scientific and manufacturing; • Suburban office leases are priced 66% lower per square foot than Chicago’s Central Business District, helping to drive DuPage’s lowest industrial vacancy in the region of 5%.

In addition to these findings, DuPage County was recently named Illinois’ Healthiest County by a study published in collaboration by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

WHEATON — The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County was awarded a $23,387 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to convert five 2016 Ford lightduty trucks to alternative-fuel vehicles that run on compressed natural gas.

All the answers, now what was the question?

I

wish I had all the answers.

I know some people who do. I’m pretty sure you do, too – know someone who is smarter than the rest of us.

Maybe you are even lucky enough to be one of them.

I think maybe I used to be one of them. Although I can’t be sure because I’m not sure of most things. I have a hazy memory of a younger me who used to know it all – or at least a lot of it. Then I blew out a few more candles on the birthday cake and realized how little I really knew and how much more there was to learn.

I saw how my opinions about different subjects changed and evolved over time, making me even more knowledgeable than I was when I thought I knew so much, but didn’t, really.

But back to the good folks who really do know it all (it goes without saying, you know who you are). One would think, I think, that a person with all the answers would experience a certain, perfect form of inner and outer peace. Being all-knowing would bring with it a heightened tranquility and sense of serenity.

There would be no need to be adamant or pushy about one’s opinions if those opinions were

always 100 percent spot-on correct. Especially the political ones. Yes, especially those.

That’s why it’s puzzling that the people with all the answers are also the ones who are often outspoken regarding their absolute and infinite knowledge. It would seem if you are unquestionably assured of your correctness that you could whisper and be heard. You wouldn’t need to shout or scream the truth – often in CAPITAL LETTERS – because that tends to turn people away, not recruit them to your cause.

Shouting often comes across as anger (just ask my kids).

When I shout I’m not doing a very good job of listening because I am so busy being right that I forget there may be another way to look at things. Shouting most often does not work and is not advisable – unless you are in a burning building, doing the laundry or for some

Kathleen Willis (D-Addison) is urging the state to recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and prioritize assistance to individuals who need assistance and counseling after being sexually assaulted.

“As the state continues to eliminate funding for vital programs, we need to take advantage of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and refocus our priorities,” said Willis. “Oftentimes, damage caused by sexual assault continues long after the crime is committed and we need to make sure victims have the resources they need for the healing process.”

The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it. Many programs that treat victims of sexual assault have been severely cut due to the Governor’s refusal to address budgetary issues until his other agenda items are addressed. This has resulted in fewer counseling services for women who have been the victims of rape and for child victims of sexual assault.

“We need to make sure that we are taking the steps needed to address the severe budget issues facing our state,” said Willis.

“However, we need to ensure that the state’s most vulnerable residents are receiving the services they need and deserve.”

To be fair, being around a bunch of uninformed people who don’t know as much as you must be frustrating for those enlightened few. Perhaps that’s why they hit the caps lock on their keyboards while signing on to social media to share nonfact-checked links. I wouldn’t know, since I’m on the negative side of the omnipotent and deep knowledge pool. But I can only imagine (which I’m probably not very good at, either).

Other techniques used by people with all the right answers include applying feigned humor

or mockery to make fun of opposing opinions. What they lack in kindness really knowledgeable people make up for in clever. LOL. This is especially compelling when sarcasm, belittling and name-calling are utilized in tandam. It takes skill to combine the three and I’m always impressed by a person who does so. I give them extra points if they include an unattractive photo of the person or politician they are intending to debase. These effective techniques work on me and I am immediately drawn to the other side of an argument when it is illustrated how silly my original opinion was anyway. I’ve got a

lot to learn.

I should give thanks for the good folks with all the answers.

They tell me what I need to know and how I should think. I used to be one of them. Then I figured things out and realized how much I’ve yet to learn and no matter how hard I try I’ll never be able to know it all.

Which might just put me one step ahead of those who think they already do.

Worry is the biggest time waster on the planet

T

he days were long, but the years went fast. My firstborn is a college graduate and in the work world.

Second born son will graduate in June. He asked if I will cry. I make no guarantees, but I did promise that I won’t blubber like I did at his preschool graduation.

I was a blithering mess. Grateful for the love and learning bestowed by the teacher, Mrs. Stenger, and awash in emotion at how fleeting time is, I cried happy tears and tears of loss.

Not really loss, but letting go.

That’s a big deal for mommies, and this mama processes transitions with a bit of emotion.

When my first son started kindergarten, I remember wondering if I had done enough in those early years. Five years had whooshed by. Had I played with him enough? Did I teach him enough? Did I do enough to prepare him for school? I felt the same kind of questions when my guys went off to college, and I am feeling it again.

Have I done enough as a mom to help them make their way?

It’s silly to ponder that. What if I hadn’t done enough? It’s too late now. There is no going back. We all do the best we can, and my sons know I did my best, which was far from perfect.

The biggest realization for me, one that I continually remind myself, is that this is

their journey. I am Mom, safety net and unconditional love, but they forge their own paths.

They have to learn their own lessons and figure out for themselves what they want.

As parents we have to disconnect from worry. Worry does not equate to love. Worry only gives us a heavy heart. I show interest, but I try not to worry about them or their futures.

They are just fine and will continue to be so.

I have extrapolated that out further, to let go of all worry.

Everyone I love gets the benefit of love and caring, but not the burden of worry. If I choose to worry, that serves no one.

Not them, sure as heck not me.

Worry does not get someone a job, heal their health, mend their broken heart, find their lost dog, or do anything to help anyone. Worry is the #1 biggest time waster on this planet. It has done nothing to change a single factor in anyone’s life.

Except for the worrier. Stress is the #1 cause of disease in our country. 80% of health issues

are brought on by stress. Letting go of worry is one way to improve your health instantly.

When my son drove home solo across country from Arizona to Illinois, someone asked if I was worried. “Oh, I would be worried sick,” she said. That was exactly my point.

We can worry ourselves sick, but why? Why not trust that all is well and will stay that way?

Worry is not love. Love is love. Care, concern, attention, staying in touch and helping out is love. Worry is just an ulcer waiting to happen.

Don’t let worry win. Catch yourself. Every time you think or say “I worry about you” change it to “I care about you”.

Instead of telling someone that you worry about them, say instead that you think about them and trust all is going to be great. “I care about you” brings a smile and a good feeling. That serves everyone.

Pay attention to how much you let worry infiltrate your words and thoughts. Be vigilant. You’ll feel better and so will your loved ones.

The money, raised at the ATA’s February bowling fundraiser, will be used to fund additional mini-grant projects in 2016-17.

AT elects Jacob Bartkiewicz as 88’s Best for March ADDISON — Jacob Bartkiewicz has been named as Addison Trail’s March recipient of 88’s Best recognition for his outstanding achievements in the performing arts/electives. A senior, Jacob was recognized during the March 21 District 88 Board of Education meeting.

Many students are part of Addison Trail’s performing arts programs – but none quite match the involvement, dedication and growth of Jacob.

Active in music and theatre since his freshman year, the stage soon became a second home for Jacob. He started out with the crew, but by his senior year, he was landing key roles in many plays and musicals, most notably as Pontius Pilate in this year’s winter musical, “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

“As a senior, Bartkiewicz has blossomed into a fantastic actor,” said AT Theatre Director Anna Jakubka. “He makes extremely smart choices on stage.”

AT social studies teacher and choreographer for the musicals LeVonne Cescolini-Boyer agreed.

“I have always enjoyed working with Bartkiewicz on many musicals here at

Addison Trail,” she said. “He is such a talented performer – he has brought me to tears with many of his performances.

Bartkiewicz also is such a happy student, who has a love for learning, and I really enjoyed our political discussions!”

Although he played the trumpet since fifth grade, it wasn’t until high school that he worked to improve. In his sophomore year, when asked to be the lead trumpet in the marching band, Jacob rose to the challenge.

“Bartkiewicz has steadily improved his performance, including being the first trumpet player in a long time to comfortably play the ‘High B’ in the famous ‘Hallelujah’ chorus,” said Dan O’Connell, AT Music Department Chair and Orchestra Director. “His leadership in the band has raised the overall performance level of the trumpet section, which has made it possible for us to do other notable works.”

Since his confidence has grown, he has decided to audition for marching band in college.

Excellent in the classroom as well, Jacob has taken 10 Advanced Placement (AP)/college-level courses and 15 hon-

ors courses to date.

“Bartkiewicz has the self-discipline and drive to maximize the social and academic benefits of his innate intelligence,” said Jim Perusich, Addison Trail English teacher. “He is a structured writer, a creative thinker and a student who responds positively and proactively to instructional feedback.”

On a long list of sports and extracurricular activities, Jacob played on the golf team, where he qualified for Sectionals this year. He took first place for building an air trajectory machine as part of Science Olympiad. As a member of DECA, he won first place for his operations research paper, qualifying him for the DECA International Career Development Conference later this month. He is also a Thespian, Sergeant at Arms on the Theatre Board, Vice President of the Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society and has participated in Relay For Life.

Bartkiewicz plans to attend Purdue University, where he plans to audition for the marching band and to study aerospace engineering. He would like to pursue a career as an astronaut.

Willowbrook baseball team splits doubleheader with Morton Garbacz strikes out 12 in win against West Chicago

The Willowbrook baseball team closed out a busy week by splitting a West Suburban Conference Gold Division doubleheader against Morton.

Willowbrook won the opener 8-1. The Warriors, who had six hits, led 6-1 after four innings thanks in part to a four-run outburst in the fourth.

TJ Geritano had a walk and an RBI. Cam Zunkel had a hit, a run scored, an RBI and walked three times. Kyle Martyniuk had an RBI and three walks. Kyle Ferguson had a triple, a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Jon Kelso had a hit, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Danny Olson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a double and a walk.

Mark Molitor had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Willowbrook walked 10 times in the game.

Matt Pizur was the winning pitcher. He went six innings and allowed five hits while striking out eight. Scott Kohrt pitched the seventh inning.

Morton won the nightcap 6-2 despite having only three hits.

Willowbrook had six hits, but made four errors.

Pizur went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Martyniuk walked twice. Ferguson had a hit and an RBI. Molitor went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. MJ Ranieri had a hit and an RBI. Eric Gunst pitched the first three innings and took the loss. He gave up two hits and

had one strikeout. Will Hines pitched the final three innings.

He allowed one hit, no earned runs had three strikeouts.

In earlier action, Willowbrook dropped a 5-2 WSC crossover game to Hinsdale Central. Willowbrook trailed 4-1 after two innings.

Addison Trail boys volleyball coach Chad Grant has a young roster this year.

But that young roster is gaining valuable varsity experience in the early part of the season.

“I like that we have been competitive in every match,” said Grant. “We have seven sophomores getting playing time right now and we only have one club player. We probably are the youngest team in the state.

We are losing a lot of close matches against a challenging schedule. I think we will start to win these matches as the season progresses.

We still have huge room for growth.”

In recent action, the Blazers recorded a 25-9, 25-12 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory against Proviso East.

Jacob Grygo had 11 assists, three kills and four aces for Addison Trail. Colton Noel added six kills, while Jonathan Gonzalez had three kills and one block. Michael Pudlo had three kills, as did Eric Lynch.

The win moved Addison Trail to 2-0 in WSC Gold play. The Blazers also dropped a

25-22, 25-17 contest to St. Patrick. The loss put Addison Trail at 3-8 overall.

“Our biggest improvements have been on offense,” said Grant. “We have been trying guys in different spots. We’re getting better every day.”

The Blazers are hard at work on the defensive end. “We have a long way to go defensively,” said Grant. “The boys are working hard, but we have to improve our technique, timing and reading of the opponents’ hitters.”

Part of that youthful roster is two setters in Grygo and David Zielinski. “We have two young setters who are getting more comfortable running the offense,” said Grant.

“Jacob Grygo has been great for us. He is going to have a really good career here. He also has been our best attacker.”

Grant also cited recent strong play from Noel and Pudlo. “Colton moved to the right side and is getting acclimated,” he said. “He gives us a big block and allows us to put pressure on the other teams from the right side. Michael is playing very efficiently. His timing is improving. He gives us a good serve. He doesn’t look like a sophomore.”

Addison Trail traveled to Morton earlier in the week for a conference match and will host Glenbard West today in a WSC crossover contest.

At the plate, Schwabe has been pleased with the team’s production through the top half of the order and noted the 6-9 positions will be important going forward. “Our 1-5 hitters are strong,” he said. “We will depend on Nos. 6-9 to complete the lineup.”

Schwabe likes what he’s seen so far in the field. “We are sharp defensively,” he said.

“The infield is the strength of the team. All our positions are solid. Our outfield is quickly catching up.”

Schwabe has a youthful pitching staff this season. “We’re focusing on pounding the strike zone and letting the infield do the work for them.”

Schwabe sees a bright future ahead for this year’s group.

“This team is comprised mostly of juniors (14 of 16 on the team are in the 11th grade),” he said.

“The players are skilled and unafraid. The sky is the limit if they continue to work hard.”

Fenton baseball team splits pair of games with Riverside-Brookfield

The Fenton baseball team split a pair of recent Metro Suburban Conference West Division games against RiversideBrookfield.

Fenton defeated R-B 6-5 and also lost 9-2. After the series split, the Bison were 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Through the team’s first five games, Garrett Focht (1B-3B, Jr.) was leading the Bison in hitting with a .500 average. Tommy Mach (IF-C, Jr.) was hitting .389, while Cory Schwarz (3BC-P, Sr.) was hitting .363. Bryan Larsen (IF-P, Jr.) was hitting .315 and Joe Simoncelli (SS2B, Jr.) was at .286.

On the mound, Tyler Santagata (IF-P, Jr.) had a win and a 2.25 ERA. Mach sported a 3.60 ERA, while Danny Lucas (1B-P, Jr.) had a win and a 4.50 ERA. Fenton is coming off a 2015 season where it won nine games overall and went 6-12 in MSC West play.

Willowbrook boys gymnastics team making big strides Warriors edge conference foe Downers Grove South by less than a point

The Willowbrook boys gymnastics team was involved in a recent good, old-fashioned nail-biter.

The Warriors edged West Suburban Conference Gold Division foe Downers Grove South by less than a point, 135.70-134.80, to remain unbeaten in league competition.

In fact, the Warriors through late last week were unbeaten at all conference levels (9-0 combined varsity, junior varsity and freshman).

“It was an intense dual meet against Downers Grove South.

We knew they would be close to use because of the scores at the Canino invitational,”

noted Willowbrook coach Caleb Strejc. “We host Hinsdale South (this week) for our final dual meet and we will prepare our hardest to try and stay undefeated at all levels in the conference—something that has not happened at Willowbrook in who knows how long.”

At the Tony Canino Invitational at Hinsdale Central, Willowbrook placed fifth out of 10 teams with a score of 132.20.

“This meet has all the teams from the West Suburban Conference,” Strejc explained. “All teams from the Silver Division but York beat us (Glenbard West, Downers Grove North, Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central). The other four teams from the gold division finished behind us with Downers South right on our tail.”

Individually, Adam Sousa won the all-around competition with a score of 52.35. He also won parallel bars, took second on high bar, vault and pommel horse, placed fourth on floor and fifth on rings.

Rick Saldana took 14th in the all-around with a score of 36.55.

At the Tom Kordewick Invitational at Hinsdale South, Willowbrook was fifth out of eight teams.

“This was a special-format meet in which guys could compete in no more than three events,” Strejc said. “It really tests the depth of a team. It was great to see some of our other guys do well and get individual awards besides Adam.”

Sousa won the rings and high bar events and was second on horse. Ian Patete was sixth on floor. Zach Zeffiro was sixth on vault. Patete also was seventh onvault. Dylan Leska placed ninth on vault, while Bailey Heppner was ninth on parallel bars.

Strejc has seen good gains made on vault and parallel bars so far this season. “On vault this can be attributed to Ricky Saldana and Zach Zeffiro starting to land their tsuks (backward flipping vault), which has led them to be able to score

in the 8s and help our team score,” he said. “On parallel bars we have seen guys such as Ricky, Miguel Portilla and Chris Ruiz begin to score in the 7s by cleaning up their routines. That has helped our overall score a lot.”

Strejc lauded the season-long efforts of Saldana, Zeffiro and Sousa.

“Ricky and Zach have stepped up by starting to land those harder vaults and bringing a lot of energy and excitement to the team through that,” he said. “Adam has stepped up by continuing to be consistent and hitting his routines meet after meet and sticking a majority of his dismounts. This is impressive because there is more pressure on him this year by not having the seniors Bret (Golz) and Keawe (Winstead) competing alongside him.”

Strejc is thrilled the team is receiving contributions throughout the roster. “What I have liked the most is the ability to step up, adapt and understand that as a group they

have a lot more responsibility that is spread out between them,” he said. “Last year all our points typically came from the scores of three guys every meet, whereas this year it is between about 10 guys. Each guy works very hard at his specialties to contribute to the overall team score and to keep that score increasing.”

Strejc noted the program’s freshman team is another bright spot this season. “They are terrific,” he said. “They are great kids with good attitudes and the desire to become better gymnasts every day of practice. If they continue working as hard as they have been and staying committed to the sport, it will be a huge factor in continuing to be a contender for conference titles in the years to come.”

The freshman will compete in a freshman invitational Friday. “That’s very exciting because it will be those guys’ first opportunity to win some individual awards and hopefully a team plaque.”

Fenton boys volleyball team enjoys success at Oswego tournament Sanchez, Hill among team leaders

The Fenton boys volleyball team has been racking up valuable experience in tournament competition.

The Bison went 2-1 at the Oswego tournament and also competed in the St. Charles East tournament. Through late last week Fenton had four wins on the season.

“We struggled in the St. Charles East tournament, but

we were very competitive in each match. We just couldn’t finish,” said Fenton coach Heather Petersen.

On the statistical front, Andrew Hill was leading the team in assists, while Javy Sanchez was the team leader in kills through late last week.

“Javy has become very versatile. He is one of our key hitters,” said Petersen. “Andrew’s setting has been consistent and improving dramatically.

He also contributes with his hitting. Andrew definitely has stepped up in the setter position and has taken control of the game.”

Freddie Bajo was the team

leader in blocks. “Freddie is willing to do whatever the team needs and he gets the job done,” said Petersen.

Also cited for strong play was David Gutierrez. “David always is positive on the court and all-around is a great player,” said Petersen.

Petersen has seen improvements across the board thus far. “We have been able to put everything together,” she said.

“They have good chemistry and have learned so much about the game the last few weeks. Our passing has improved significantly, although we still have some work to do.”

Petersen also is pleased with

the amount of offensive options the team has.“The offense is continuously getting better,” she said. “We have six hitters who all do a nice job. Javy and Andrew and Freddy do a very nice job putting the ball away. We are working on other options to make our offensive game more competitive.”

Fenton also is making strides on the defensive front. “The defense is coming around,” said Petersen. “We will be spending a lot of time working on this part of our game because I definitely think it is the weakest part of our game.

Although it’s improving, there is a lot of work still to do.”

Serving is another facet of the game that is on the uptick for the Bison. “Serving has improved dramatically,” said Petersen. “The mental aspect of the serving game has improved and as a team we are much more accurate and consistent.”

Fenton played Proviso West earlier in the week and will play Illiana Christian today and Rich East this coming Tuesday.

“The boys are a great group,” said Petersen. “They are dedicated, have the drive to win and work hard. It’s never a question of working hard at practice and in matches. They want to continue to grow and get better and will put the time in.”

Walsh plays key role for Willowbrook boys volleyball team Warriors go 5-5 through first 10 matches

One key bright spot for the Willowbrook boys volleyball team early on has ben the play of 6-6 middle blocker Ian Walsh.

“Ian has a great presence in the middle,” said Willowbrook coach Ryan Bazon. “He is

quick on closing blocks, great at reading hitters, has a good volleyball IQ and is a great leader.”

Through the team’s first 10 matches, Walsh had 38 kills, was hitting 40.58 percent and had 30 blocks.

Willowbrook was 5-5 overall and 1-1 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play through its first 10 matches.

“We continue to work on fundamentals at practice,” said Bazon. “We have become a better passing team and our servereceive has improved over the

first few matches. This has led to a more effective attack.”

Bazon noted the team’s middle hitters were hitting at 40.58 and 34.38 percent. “We are very strong at the middle position when it comes to leadership,” he said. “Our middle hitters are very effective hitters.”

Jack Maksymec had 45 digs on the defensive end. “Jack has been a nice addition to our defense,” said Bazon. “He anticipates well and takes control of the back row. We need to help him out at the net by improving our blocking game.”

Bazon added he’s seen more consistency with the team’s sets. “We are becoming more consistent with our communication between hitters and setters,” he said.

Serving also is being emphasized. “We need to serve better,” said Bazon. “We need to serve better. We are making too many errors and need to put more pressure on the opposing team. It has cost us a few matches.”

Willowbrook heads to York today for a WSC crossover match and then plays in the

Downers Grove South Invitational this weekend.

In a recent 25-16, 25-16 WSC crossover loss to Lyons Township, Lucas Betts had five assists. Joe Ernst had one block. Calvin Linnig had four assists, while Maksymec had one assist and four digs. Joe Ragucci had one kill. Andy Shreckengost had one block.

Ivan Tassev had one kill, one block and two digs. Brendan Waldorf had four kills, one block and five digs, while Walsh had three kills and three blocks.

Gonzalez’s three-run homer fuels IC Catholic Prep softball team Sutton blasts two home runs in Knights’ baseball win

The IC Catholic Prep softball team recorded a pair of Metro Suburban Conference West Division wins recently against Fenton and Guerin Prep.

In a 15-5 five-inning win over Guerin, the Knights exploded for 18 hits and scored 10 runs over the first three innings.

First-inning RBI singles by Kayla Faber-Cournane, Kasey Carver and Georgia Mahnke helped the Knights get out to a 5-0 lead. Melissa Gonzalez keyed a four-run second inning with a three-run home run, the first of her high-school career.

In the third inning, Gonzalez had an RBI single that scored Faber-Cournane. In the fifth inning, the Knights scored five more runs. Faber-Cournane’s RBI single scored Josie Lytton to get things going.

Gonzalez finished with three hits and four RBI. Faber-Cournane was the winning pitcher. She struck out six.

In a 10-0 five-inning win against

Fenton, the Knights scored six runs in the third inning to pull away. IC Catholic Prep had 10 hits in the game.

Gonzalez had a triple in the first inning and finished with two RBI. Faber-Cournane was the winning pitcher. She struck out two and allowed four hits en route to a fiveinning shutout.

IC Catholic Prep also lost a 10-8 non-conference decision to St. Viator. The Knights trailed 9-0 after two innings thanks to an eight-run St. Viator second. However, the Knights came back and scored nine runs over the final three innings, including six in the sixth inning.

The Knights had 11 hits in the game.

ADDISON — Spring Break is almost a memory and summer vacation will be here in a few weeks.

If you’re looking for a way to keep your kids active this summer, Addison Park District has a variety of one-week specialty camps and day camps for you to choose.

Registration opens for Summer Camp as of April 1 for kids 3-13 years of age. Parents may register weekly or for the entire 10-week Day Camp program. Additionally, 5-day or 10-day Punch Cards are an option so that you may select only the days which work best your family’s schedule.

Summer Camp starts June 9 and continues through Aug. 19.

Punch Cards for 5-day or 10-day options are available to purchase for ALL of the day camps. These punch cards make it possible for your child to attend summer camp only on field trip days or the days of the week that fit best into your busy summer schedule. Field trip schedules are available online at addisonparks.org or at any Park District facility.

Tiny Tots Camp is available from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily to the youngest campers who are preschool aged or entering kindergarten in the fall. This camp meets daily at Community Park where campers will enjoy making crafts, playing a variety of indoor and outdoor games, playing on the Splash Pad of the Family Aquatic Center and going on weekly field trips every Wednesday. Campers should bring a towel, swimsuit, and a sack lunch with them each day of camp.

Kids Camp and Sports Camp are available from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily to kids who are entering first to fifth grades in the fall. While Sports Camp is truly all about sports, Kids Camp participants will enjoy a variety of activities including sports, games, arts and crafts and swimming. Sports Camp and Kids Camp will go on weekly field trips together every Tuesday and Thursday.

Parents have the option of registering their weekly so that campers can select a specific sport or interest. All campers are required to bring a sack lunch with them daily.

Hector started working in 1994 for one of the most prestigious jewelry stores in Elmhurst, York Jewelers. He learned the whole process of making a jewelry piece. Starting with the design, then carving it in wax, casting, molding, cleaning, and polishing to finish in a fine jewelry piece. Hector worked in the same location for 17 years. But, now he has decided to start his own business. Lucia has her master degree in business administration. Hector and Lucia have two children Arianna and Enrique.

Creating customer empathy If you own, run or work for any of the approximately 23 million smallto mid-sized businesses in America, chances are, you want more sales.

So, how do you make it happen? By showing customers you care. In this world of impersonal interactions and instant communication, there’s enormous value and differentiation in creating empathy for the customer’s situation.

By Diane Emo Sales training often piles on facts, CONTRIBUTOR figures and details that can turn a salesperson’s brain into a mish-mash of disconnected information with no context. So, keep it simple.

Train salespeople to be empathetic, consultative professionals by building on the things they already know. They know how they expect to be treated as customers – because we are all customers, right?

They know how they feel when people treat them unfairly or push them into a decision. They know when someone is really listening to them, not pretending. So, start with a customer context as a way to build your story.

Here is a three-step path toward building customer empathy in your sales teams.

1. Listen for emotion to find customer pain points: An interesting thing happens when salespeople ask questions – customers talk. What’s going on here?

How long has that been going on? What have you tried so far to fix it? Here’s the secret – listen for emotion in their words – disappointed, frustrated, angry, tried repeatedly, no response. Then, repeat the customer’s exact words to confirm their pain point. “It sounds like you’re pretty frustrated...” Pain points are the issues or problems that are significant enough for the customer to make a change – and buy from you instead.

2. Teach a simple consulting model for valuebased conversations focused on the customer’s pain points. I write three columns on the whiteboard labeled “What I heard (pain point),” “What we will do (solution),” and “That will help you (value).” Then, I ask the rep to give me one of her customer’s pain points.

For example, “What I heard is that the odor in your restroom continues to be a problem, even though you’ve asked your service to fix it. What we will do is use a disinfectant that kills the germs causing the odor. That will help you have a restroom that consistently smells good for your customers and employees.”

3. Feel, felt, found is still a good formula for moving people from objections to closed deals.

When a customer states an objection, try this.

Say something like, “I understand how you feel.” This lets customers know you heard them express their feelings, can relate, and understand why they feel the way they do. The customer feels validated instead of ignored.

Part-time job in high school leads to career in fine jewelry Dowling Jewelry Design, Ltd., located at 1600 16th Street in Oak Brook, is in the business of making and repairing fine jewelry, a service they have offered since 2004.

“I started as a janitor in a high school in 1981, then I worked for three years at this familyowned jewelry store in Addison,” said Hugh Dowling, owner of Dowling Jewelry. “The jewelers taught me little repair and polishing.”

Asked who first influenced his career, he is quick to answer Stan Razny Sr. of Razny Jewelers.

“I worked for Razny Jewelers during high school years,” he said. “I had many jewelers, diamond settlers and goldsmiths who helped shape and develop my talents in manufacturing fine jewelry, too many to list. Each contributed something different to my career.”

After three years, he went away to St. Ambrose University for two years, after which he attended Gem City College in Quincy. That led him to a career in a trade shop doing work for other jewelry stores.

“After 19 years of working in the trade shop in 2004,” [he] said, “I opened Dowling Jewelry Design, Ltd. Hugh and his wife Julie have been married for 17 years and when not making jewelry, they enjoy sailing and traveling.

Asked what advice he might have for someone starting out in the jewelry business, he said, “Listen to all the Jewelers, Goldsmiths and Diamond Setters who will take the time to teach you.”

Five tax tips for small business owners (BPT) — Starting a business can be intimidating, but with a solid business plan and guidance from the small business community of experts, it can also be incredibly rewarding. Whether you own a local restaurant or an online Etsy shop, one of the biggest things to get used to as a new small business owner is filing taxes for the first time. If you’re filing a business return, hiring an experienced professional tax preparer can help you avoid making common mistakes that can impact the success of your small business.

To get the most from your deductions, here are five tips for small business owners to keep in mind this tax season: 1. What tax deductions can I claim?

Even if the expenses were incurred during the previous calendar year, the IRS allows businesses to deduct up to $5,000 worth of certain start-up expenses in the year the business began (subject to limitations). In addition to these costs, corporations and partnerships are allowed to deduct up to $5,000 of their organizational costs in their first year of operation.

2. Is my car mileage deductible? If you use your home as a place of business and consider it your principal place of business, car owners are typically allowed to deduct mileage costs from

their home to business-related stops.

3. Can I deduct business travel expenses? When you are traveling away from your usual business location, you may be able to deduct ordinary and necessary expenses related to your work.

These expenses include transportation costs, lodging, dry cleaning or laundry, tips, baggage charges and business equipment usage expenses such as fax machines or phones. Meals can be deducted if the trip is overnight but there is a 50 percent limitation on these deductions.

4. Are personal care and clothing expenses deductible? No, the IRS has a very strict rule against personal clothing being deducted even if they are bought for business use and only worn at work.

5. How does the Affordable Care Act (ACA) affect my taxes and deductions?

The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) Marketplace allows for small business to purchase health insurance for their employees. If you pay at least half of your employee’s premiums and have less than 25 full-time and equivalent employees with an average annual wage of less than $50,000 ($51,600 for 2016), you may be eligible for the small business health care tax credit. Halfway House Indoor Golf opened its doors in early November at 555 S. York in Elmhurst. It features four golf simulators from the leader in the golf simulator industry, Full Swing Golf. These are the same systems that many pro golfers use in their own homes. Using real clubs and real golf balls, golfers swing into a large screen. High-tech cameras and infrared sensors collect information from the swing and ball flight. The information is processed at the speed of light, and a virtual golf ball lands on the virtual golf course in the precise spot where it would land if played on the real course. The system offers about 90 championship courses with beautiful, realistic graphics. It’s the next best thing to playing on the real course!

Why the name Halfway House? Because a ‘halfway house’ on a golf course is the snack shack, usually situated between Hole 9 and Hole 10 on an 18-hole course.
