DuPage County awards $1 million to area nonprofit agencies vention opportunities to strengthen families’ well-being and stability.

The grants range from $3,757 to $44,000. The agencies were required to be registered as a 501(c)(3), serve a broad geographical area of DuPage County and have made a substantial impact on County residents for at least three years.

Bond set for Elmhurst healthcare worker charged with theft, burglary DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth have announced that bond has been set for an employee of an Elmhurst independent living facility for allegedly stealing jewelry from an elderly resident at the facility.

Jossie Powell, 74, of 342 Morris Avenue, Bellwood, appeared at a bond hearing, where Judge Robert Miller set bond at $5,000 with 10% to apply.

It is alleged that in mid-January,

2018, Powell, who was employed as a part-time caregiver for her victim, stole jewelry from her victim including a men’s gold bracelet and a white gold women’s ring containing a ruby and diamonds. When the victim realized her jewelry was missing, she contacted the Elmhurst Police Department, who began an investigation. The investigation ultimately led to Powell, who has been charged with one count of Theft (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Burglary (Class 2 Felony.)

“These individuals deserve our respect, care and comfort and should not have to worry about becoming a victim of theft,” Berlin said. “I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their efforts on this case.”

Powell’s next court appearance is scheduled for May 10, in front of Judge George Bakalis.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

The DuPage County Board awarded a total of $1 million to local nonprofits today through the DuPage County Human Services Grant Fund.

Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Bob Larsen said the fund was created by the County Board to partner with agencies directly serving the needs of DuPage County residents.

“The DuPage County nonprofits who received program awards today provide vital community services as part of our County’s safety net, protecting our most vulnerable populations. This public-private partnership helps them to pursue additional private and public support to assist the largest number of people possible.

We are honored to help improve the lives of DuPage County residents through this program,” Larsen said.

Mario’s Deli II recognized for 25 years of dedicated service in Bensenville On April 10 Village President Frank DeSimone, recognized Mario’s Deli II at a Village of Bensenville Board Meeting for their 25 years of service in Bensenville.

After its many years serving the community, Mario’s Deli II is closing their doors.

The family-owned facility first opened as an Italian-American style grocery store on October 1, 1992 by owners Joe and Tony Cesario. In their 25 years of doing business in Bensenville, Mario’s Deli II provided jobs for over 150 employees.

Throughout their years in business, Mario’s Deli II became a staple of the community, eventually grow-

ing into a full Italian style deli that served both cold and hot entrees.

Their most popular sandwiches included the Italian, the Joey, and their homemade chicken salad. While in business, Joe and Tony Cesario made family and newly developed recipes in house on a daily basis.

During the April 10 Village Board Meeting, Village President, Frank DeSimone, thanked Joe and Tony Cesario by saying, “Thank you for your dedicated service and loyal corporate citizenship for the past 25 years in Bensenville and we wish the entire Mario’s Deli II team the best of luck in all their future endeavors.”

Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary, Fenton Interact Club fund four years of high school for girl from Kenyan village

For many years, Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary has funded scholarships that have helped Fenton High School graduates go to college.

This year, though, the Rotary Club is partnering with the Interact Club it sponsors at Fenton and the Bernard and Elsie Weiss Dago Scholarship Fund to pay for four years of high school for Spencer Achieng Goxy, a teenage girl from the small, rural village of Dago in western Kenya. The club’s $3,000 donation covers the costs of room and board, tuition, books, uniforms, and fees.

“I’m promising that I will work hard to achieve my goal and brighten my future,” wrote Spencer in a thank you letter she SPENCER sent to the scholarship fund in December.

ACHIENG GOXY “I, too, also would like to help other people the way you did it for me.”

This partnership to fund Spencer’s high school education formed this fall after philanthropist Brett Weiss shared his experiences in Dago at a Rotary social event. Mr. Weiss, who served as the first professional Youth Coordinator for the Bensenville Youth Services Coalition, first visited Dago in 2009, and subsequently began raising money to give to the people of Dago so they could buy shoes, water filters, backpacks, school uniforms, and even cows. He quickly came to realize, though, that to truly improve their lives, he would have to address the issue of education.

In 2011, he sponsored one student from Dago, and with his success, the scholarship fund was able to award two more scholarships the next year.

Now, there are 24 students in the program, and one is currently attending college. (For more information, visit www.hopefordago.org.)

MORE ABOUT BENSENVILLE-WOOD DALE ROTARY In addition to covering the costs of Spencer’s high school education in Dago, Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary annually awards $10,000 in scholarships to Fenton High School graduates. The club also coordinates an annual coat drive that provides more than 400 families with new or gently used coats, gloves, scarves, and hats each winter, and it supports a wide variety of local community service initiatives, including the Bensenville-Wood Dale Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, the Summer Celebration carnival, and Music in the Park.

Members of Bensenville-Wood Dale Rotary’s Interact Club at Fenton serve as peer coaches for the school’s Special Olympics basketball team, and now fundraise for the Bernard and Elsie Weiss Dago Scholarship Fund. Bensenville Rotary also sponsors international student exchanges at Fenton, most recently for a high school student from Brazil who lived with Rotary members while attending the school and experiencing American culture. The club also sends Fenton students to Rotary leadership workshops and to the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Weekend. It funds this work through its annual dinner and raffle in November, and through membership dues and donations.

April 9 Police said Erik Betancourt-Garcia, 22, of Addison, had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for driving while license suspended and speeding near Army Trail and Highview at around 4:28 a.m.

He also was charged with driving while license suspended.

April 8 Steven J. Poulos, 32, of Franklin Park, was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper turn at an intersection, no front license plate and no insurance subsequent to investigating a traffic accident near Fullerton and Addison at around 1:47 a.m.

April 6 Larry D. Hardimon, Jr., 43, of Bellwood, was charged with aggravated assault, resisting a police officer and disorderly conduct at around 1:37 p.m.

Police said Peggy A. Villarreal, 36, of Romeoville, had a failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department for driving while license suspended, and operating a vehicle while using a hand-held electronic device subsequent to a traffic stop in the 1100 block of N. Swift at around 10:03 a.m.

Villarreal also was charged with driving while license suspended, speeding and no insurance.

Villa Park April 7 Julian O. Almanza, 31, of Aurora, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near North and Harvard at around 4:51 p.m.

Yefri A. Cifuentes-Hernandez, 28, of Bensenville, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near North and Ardmore at around 10:55 p.m.

Noah W. Townsend, 18, of Lombard, was charged with retail theft at a store on March 5. The original complaint and arrest warrant were issued April 7.

Theft was reported at an entertainment center. Police said that between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m., an unknown suspect stole a cellular phone when the victim sat it down to tie a child’s shoes.

Criminal trespass was reported in the 100 block of W. Home at 4:24 a.m. Police said an unknown suspect(s) forced entry into a closed business and activated an alarm.

The unknown suspect(s) fled.

Nothing appeared to be missing at the time of the report.

April 5 Brian K. Kolb, 56, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 300 block of E. St. Charles at around 1:22 a.m. Laura Y. Ramirez, 18, of Villa Park, and a female juvenile from Villa Park also were

charged with disorderly conduct, while a 19-year-old Villa Park man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of E. St. Charles at around 8:49 p.m.

April 4.

Theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Terrace. Police said that between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., an unknown suspect stole a cellular phone inadvertently left behind by a customer.

April 3 Keenan W. Bennett, 28, of Glendale Heights, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license suspended, operating a vehicle when the registration was suspended for no insurance, disobeying a traffic control device, no registration plate on vehicle and improper window tint near Michigan and North at around 5:29 p.m.

Tiffany A. Humberstone, 37, of West Chicago, was charged with obstructing a police officer and permitting an unauthorized person to drive near North and Villa at around 7:42 a.m.

Edward J. Soriano, 47, of Villa Park, was charged with aggravated DUI, DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance near St. Charles and Michigan at around 10:52 p.m.

Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 200 block of W. Roosevelt, at around 2:56 a.m.

Three Chicago juveniles detained for alleged attempt to break into Wheaton residence

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Wheaton Chief of Police James Volpe announced last week that three juveniles, all from Chicago, will be detained after being charged with Attempt Residential Burglary, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding and Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle for their alleged roles in an attempted residential late-night break-in in Wheaton last weekend.

The fourth individual charged in the case, Gerardo Flores, 18, (d.o.b.

6/6/1999) also of Chicago, appeared in Bond Court where Judge Joseph Bugos set bond at $150,000 with 10 percent to apply.

While all three cases have been assigned to Judge Michael Wolfe, each defendant has a next court date separate from the others. The next court dates for the defendants are April 23, for defendant “A”, April 16, for defendant “B” and April 13, for defendant “C”. Flores’ next court date is scheduled for May 7, in front of Judge George Bakalis.

On April 8, Wheaton police officers responded to a call of a possible residential burglary in progress on Pershing Road. It is alleged that upon the officer’s arrival, the defendants fled the scene resulting in a brief car chase. It is alleged that the defendants crashed their vehicle in the driveway of a residence on North West Street and that the defendants abandoned the vehicle. All four defendants were found hiding in a shed at a residence on Harrison Street and taken into custody short time later.

John Looney was the prototype for gangsters who would follow

John Looney was the original Quad-Cities vice lord and also one of the nation’s earliest organized crime leaders.

Looney was a thin, cold, gaunt, sort of d o u r- l o o k i n g man with haunting eyes. He wore the same baggy, dirty suit every day and ate raw liver on toast. He ran for the Illinois state House as a Democrat and lost. His bitterness over that defeat launched his career as the undisputed godfather of the underworld.

He controlled a vast and unmatched empire of extortion, bribery, booze, gambling and prostitution. There were downtown shootings, political graft and bombings and behind it all a scandal sheet newspaper. His influence reached into Wisconsin, Missouri, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the East Coast.

His power in Rock Island grew almost absolute because he was able to control portions of two key elements of society: politicians and the press.

Looney published the Rock Island News from about 1905 to 1923. The papers of that era said there was “no filthier, more libelous newspaper has ever been printed in the United States.

While John Looney had several homes, his mansion overlooking the Rock River called Bel Air was famous for its weeklong parties, drunken orgies, nude swimming in the Rock River, and cock fights, boxing and bulldog fights.

In 1912, Looney got mad at Rock Island Mayor Harry Schriver when he pressed for prosecution of Looney’s henchman Anthony Billburg on gambling charges. He attacked the mayor in a series of articles in The News.

Schriver had Looney brought to the police station where he beat him as officers watched. Looney was hospitalized.

The next night, March 27, 1912, Looney’s gang convened a meeting in Market Square. The crowd grew to more than 2,000 and the angry mob stormed the police station and police fired back, killing two bystanders, wounding eight others. Martial law was declared and the governor sent in 600 troops to quell the riot.

Looney left town to recuperate at his 25,000-acre ranch in New Mexico, but returned in March 1921, revived The News and re-established his control over local vice. Looney controlled almost all gambling and prostitution houses—about 150 over a vast region—run by Helen Van Dale, known as “Queen of the Prostitutes.” This time around he added corrupt police, judges and city officials to the list of

things he controlled.

While John Looney rose to power by blackmail and gunfire, it was also his downfall. When Looney raised the “protection fee” charged to Bill Gabel, a former police officer who owned one of the city’s largest bootleg saloons, Gabel refused to pay. Instead he turned over 12 canceled checks made out to John Looney to a federal investigators.

Hotel July 31, 1922. He was getting out of his car just after midnight when shots were fired. One bullet hit him in the head and he died instantly.

Drive-by shootings had become commonplace. On Oct. 6, 1922, John Looney’s one-time lieutenant, Dan Drost, joined forces with Anthony Billburg, another former lieutenant turned enemy. With two other men they ambushed Looney and his son and bodyguard outside the Sherman Hotel. John Looney fled to the hotel, while his son, Connor, 21, returned fire before he slumped to the ground. He died the next day. The four men were sent to prison for the murder.

By Oct. 26, 1922, all of Looney’s saloons and brothels were closed. Six stills were destroyed. One of Looney’s homes was raided and its arms cache seized. With its influence gone, The News ceased publication. A federal investigation revealed that 170 or more illegal businesses had been paying for protection from Looney.

After his son’s funeral, John Looney fled to New Mexico. Federal conspiracy charges were filed against him.

Federal prohibition authorities joined state, county and city law-enforcement officers in an anti-vice campaign aimed at cleaning up the community.

John Looney was captured in Belen, N.M., on Nov. 30, 1923 and returned to Rock Island. He was sentenced to prison for conspiracy and the murder of Bill Gabel. Looney was released from prison in ill health April 7, 1934, at age 68 and never heard from again.

He died March 4, 1942.

Slices of life

Liquid gold brings clarity to our daily lives

In many parts of the world people walk miles just to access it. Here in the U.S. we may take it for granted because for most of us it comes from the tap with the flick of a wrist.

Some of us buy it bottled. Some of us like it with a slice of lemon or lime.

Some prefer iced, others straight up.

It is the base for our coffee, tea and even wine.

We bathe in it; it cleanses us. We drink it; it sustains us. Our bodies rely on it for survival. All living things do. It literally rains down from the sky to replenish itself and nourish and grow plants, people and every other living entity on the planet.

By far it’s the most common substance found on Earth. Water. It covers more than 70 percent of the world’s surface and that’s just a drop in the bucket. All things are literally floating in it. It occupies 75 percent of the both the human brain and the average tree. Jellyfish and cucumbers are 95 percent water. It embodies all

things and leaves no stone unturned – literally.

Water is life. Most of us turn on our faucets to make the morning coffee or clean the frying pan without giving much thought to the miracles of water. Maybe we should.

Our lungs are 90 percent water, our blood 83 percent. In its entirety, our body is somewhere around 60 percent water – more than half of our entire makeup is that of good old H2O. Without it we would be little more than dust.

It is our body’s only detoxifier.

How do we rid ourselves of contaminants? In sweat, exhaled breath and (ahem) during bathroom activities.

Water regulates temperature – of our bodies and the Earth. Talk about double duty. When we get hot, we sweat, ridding our body of contaminants while that same sweat cools us down. The temperature of the planet is regulated via ocean currents, which transport water from the equator toward the North and South Poles to even out distribution of the sun’s energy.

Another miracle: water recycles itself. There is the same amount on Earth today as on the day the planet was formed. Usable water is lost to pollution and contamination, but the total amount remains steady.

If the everyday truths of water have you intrigued, just wait; I’ve saved the best for last.

I’ve always thought of water as an inanimate object, but experiments have shown it reacts to the environment.

Researcher Masaru Emoto (not to be confused with Masaru Emoji)

studied the influence of words and sounds on the formation of water crystals. Best of all, he photographed his results. They blew me out of the water.

Dr. Emoto found crystal formations differed based on the sounds and vibrations surrounding them.

Positive words and harmonious music yielded beautiful and balanced crystals. Negative phrases and harsh, discordant tones resulted in disproportioned, ill-formed crystals.

Water seemed to prefer Mozart over heavy metal. My apologies to Metallica. The most delicate and harmonious crystals were formed when water was exposed to two specific words: love and gratitude. (Moment of silence here.)

This leads us to the big question: if water is affected by words, intentions and energy, what does that say about human beings who are nearly twothirds water? Do positive and negative vibrations and phrases impact

our physical beings? I’ve already locked in my answer.

Here on Earth, water is the basis for life. To think water can sense positive and negative vibrations elevates it to more than a clear liquid or a chemical compound that, when frozen, makes lemonade taste better.

Something so sensitive that it reacts to human emotions and messages with displays of beauty or discord is nothing short of miraculous. The thought that we are influenced in the same way is pretty mind bending.

Perhaps there’s more to learn from water than what I initially imagined.

I feel like I just jumped into the deep end. In a good way.

Inspiring actions can ignite us all to do a little good

An episode of The Ellen Show from last fall had Braden Baker, a 10-year-old boy who was raising money to buy hearing aids for kids and adults who can’t afford them.

Braden was born with 75 percent hearing loss and has had hearing aids since he was baby.

After his dog, aptly named Chewy, chewed up his hearing aids (not once, but twice), his mom had a heart-to-heart with him explaining that they were fortunate to be able to afford to replace his hearing aids (expensive equipment, for sure) but many people cannot, and he needs to be more careful with his.

Braden got to thinking that they were kids out there who did not have the money for new hearing aids if something happened to them, or maybe not even to have aids in the first place. He started a Go Fund Me campaign with the goal of $1,000 to help provide hearing aids for others. Braden had raised over $20,000 when got a call from The Ellen Show producers.

His mom videoed his reaction to the call – He literally fell out of his chair (and cried sweet sincere tears of joy.) This kid did not do something to try to get on TV. He did not scheme on how to get on The Ellen Show for self-promotion.

He simply decided to do something good to help others. That landed

When Braden was interviewed, he made a point to tell Ellen that he watches her and sees how she is always helping people and giving to causes, and that inspired him to help people and give to a cause. He was going to give a check to Oticon Hearing Foundation to buy hearing aids for people who could never afford them.

This kid was about a month away from his 11th birthday when the show was taped. He explained that his birthday gift was a trip to Guatemala to distribute the hearing aids his fund was able to buy.

(Most kids that age want a gaming system.)

Ellen’s advertising partner Cheerios and their “One Million Acts of Good” donated an extra $20,000 to his Go Fund Me campaign. Ellen also asked the audience to check out Braden’s cause and donate if so moved.

Since then this young man has

raised over $75,000. Braden Baker did indeed go to Guatemala with the Oticon Hearing Foundation and they gave 100 people the gift of hearing. He has since done a TEDx Youth Talk in his home town of Ft. Worth, Texas; went to South Africa to distribute more hearing aids; and he has set a new goal of $100,000.

Braden drew a picture that says: Find Your Purpose and Do Something With It. That image has been put on t-shirts that he sells to raise

money too. The boy has certainly found his purpose.

It is inspiring for ANYONE of any age to get involved in a cause that touches their heart. The ripple effect is powerful. Maybe you feel compelled to give to a cause or maybe you feel the spark to start your own something. There’s always room for more.

We can fill the world with good.

We can raise $1,000 for a cause, we can raise $1 million. We can go on

TV or we can go door to door. We simply do what our heart calls and take one small step. As Braden’s mom told him when he launched his goal of $1,000: Put it out to the universe and see what happens!

Aside from the practical, technical and button savvy she requires, a caring attitude needs to shine through.

District 4 Foundation hosts 13th annual Family Fun Fair The Addison School District 4 Foundation for Educational Excellence hosted its 13th annual Family Fun Fair on Friday, April 13, welcoming hundreds of students and their families to Indian Trail Junior High School. The ITJHS Jazz Ensemble kicked off the evening performing a variety of jazz standards.

The group often encourages crowd participation and this year they convinced ASD4 school superintendent John Langton and group of students to get up and dance as the band performed “YMCA.” The Addison Park District, Addison Teachers’ Association (ATA), and all of ASD4’s school PTAs provided free games and prizes for the guests to enjoy. Another popular attraction was the face-painting station where volunteers spent the

evening turning children’s faces into works of art.

The highlight of the evening came with the presentation by Foundation Board Vice President Kathleen Willis of more than $23,000 worth of minigrant checks. Checks were awarded to staff members who applied for funding to carry out programs or projects that are not part of the school’s regular budget. Polar heart rate monitors, guided math materials, STEM workshops, LEGO engineering workshops and literacy materials are some of the projects that will be funded with these awards. ATA co-presidents Stacy Hahn and Bob Wojtas also made a donation presentation of $1500 to the Foundation.

These funds will be used for future mini-grant awards.

The Green Bay Botanical Garden is hosting the LEGO® exhibit known as Nature Connects® this summer.

The largest of the sculptures is a herd of deer, quite fitting for Wisconsin and coming in at a whopping 84,442 pieces. This is the only stop in Wisconsin for this nationally touring exhibit.

The Milwaukee Public Museum has two special exhibits on the calendar for 2018. Opening this winter is “Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed,” an exhibit that combines authentic artifacts and hands-on activities to shed light on this civilization known for hieroglyphic script, calendar-making and mathematics. Then in the fall, it’s “Frogs: A Chorus of Colors,” offering a look at frog species, from lush rainforests to parched deserts, and their sometimes surprising and bizarre survival strategies.

Take an Art Break The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened recently, features works by internationally established artists and offers creative workshops too, with the goal of unleashing the region’s collective creative energy while starting the conversation about how art connects us all. The museum is located in the building that once housed the historic Wausau Club, a social club and banquet hall built at the turn of the 20th century. Admission to the museum is free.

The Vox will be the new, permanent home for concert series coming to Marshfield, putting the town on the music map with artists whose concert schedule may include Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Chicago. Located in an existing vacant building, it’s one more piece of the puzzle to create a downtown arts district that already includes shops and a movie theater.

The Sylvee concert hall in Madison is scheduled to open this fall, with the first concerts announced in the spring.

His monumental images of Native American life across North America are captured in gold tone prints. The exhibit runs September through December.

“Bucky on Parade” takes to the streets of Madison and Dane County May 7-Sept. 12, with some 100 Bucky Badger statues, each standing six feet tall and each decorated by a different local artist, displayed throughout the area. These artsy renditions of the beloved mascot of the University of Wisconsin-Madison should be an instant selfie hit. After the public art display, the Bucky statues will be auctioned off to raise funds for charitable organizations. This is an encore to the city’s highly successful “Cows on Parade.”

Crack Open a Cold One Milwaukee Brewing Company is getting new and massive digs in the former Pabst Brewing Company distribution facility known as Building 42. This new location for the brewery is expected to open this summer and will include a large tasting room, event space, and rooftop patio with views of the city skyline and Lake Michigan. Milwaukee Brewing Company also has a brewery location in the city’s Walker’s Point neighborhood.

Stone students pack food at FMSC during spring break Nearly 40 Stone School students, staff, and families kicked off their spring break by spending Monday, March 26 packaging food at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) in St. Charles. This is the second year that the Stone Student Voice, a school club, has chosen FMSC as a school service project. The food they packed was designated for distribution in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Club sponsor Marypat Hradecky initiated the club three years ago with a goal of teaching students how to be safe and responsible digital citizens,

using online communication in a positive and constructive manner. It also gives students a voice to inform their families and community about Stone School programs, academic initiatives and events.

In past years, the students have raised funds to support a variety of charitable organizations. This year the club members have worked more on having a direct impact on others, such as creating signs with positive words to identify the school’s colored pod areas. They also created and maintain a “Take What You Need” wall that is filled with positive

quotes, comments and drawing for students or staff that need inspiration. The club’s activities and initiatives are documented on their Twitter feed #StoneStudentVoi. The club has grown in size and scope this year, adding more members and two new staff sponsors, Carmela Getz and Lisa Markowski. The sponsors facilitate the student-led group as they continue to take on a variety of positive projects including participation in Random Acts of Kindness Week, #Rock Your Socks for World Down Syndrome Day, and High Five Fridays.

AT softball team visits Springfield, St. Louis

From March 26 to 30, members of the Addison Trail Softball Team travIt was a sea of plastic caps on Monday, March 26, the first day of spring break, when this group of voluneled to Springfield and the St. Louis teers including members of the Stone Student Voice club spent the day helping out at Feed My Starving area.

During their visit, they played against Lanphier High School and won. The student-athletes from both teams came together after the game and shared a meal as well. The Addison Trail group also was able to practice at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and visit several tourist sites, including the Gateway Arch and the City Museum in St. Louis; the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield; and the “World’s Tallest Man Statue” made in

memory of Robert Pershing Wadlow, the tallest person in recorded history, which is in Wadlow’s hometown of Alton.

The student-athletes also participated in several team competitions such as bowling and laser tag.

“Although the weather wasn’t the greatest, the team used the experience to bond and create a positive team chemistry,” said Mark Olson, Addison Trail social studies teacher and Head Coach of the Softball Team.

“Blazer Nation should be extremely proud of how the girls represented the school and the community.”

Addison Trail baseball team takes two from defending conference champs Blazers benefitting from strong hitting and pitching

In an early season that has been marred by poor weather and thus inconsistent scheduling, the Addison Trail baseball team has made the most of it.

The Blazers recently won two of three games in a three-game series against defending conference champion Leyden.

“Taking two of three from Leyden was huge,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy. “They are the defending conference champs.”

Trail was 5-5 overall and 2-2 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play.

“Of our five losses, four came in the bottom of the sixth inning or later,” Kennedy lamented. “We had the lead and lost it. Other than that, the year has been good. We’ve been in every game. The only game where we’ve lost by more than two runs is Downers Grove South and they scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Things snowballed for us in that game. We’ve been playing well even with the weather. The fact that we got in 10 games is amazing.

It’s a miracle in itself.”

Kennedy said his team has seen strong play in all three facets of the game, particularly hitting and defense. “We are swinging the bat well

and playing pretty good defense,” he said. “Our team average is a little over .300. That’s a huge increase for us. We’re swinging it pretty well and playing pretty good defense.

The issue is the games we’ve lost we couldn’t get off the field. The other team would string hits together and then we are kicking the ball around and giving them extra outs. When you do that, you pay the price.”

Pitching also has been a bright spot, in particular with Trevor Fulmer.

“Our pitching has been pretty solid,” said Kennedy. “Trevor has done an excellent job on the mound. He has three of our wins, which is awesome for us. He’s been pretty much right on point. His ERA is around 2.00 and he has a lot of strikeouts.”

Michael Scali is hitting over .500, while Fulmer has been equally impressive at the plate, batingt .412.

Matt Crandall is hitting .430 and Kennedy also has been pleased with the offensive efforts of Simon Marinelli, along with Nick and Vince Daudelin.

While the Fenton softball team went 1-3 during a recent four-game stretch, coach Dave Mello’s group had plenty to feel good about.

The Bison lost to IC Catholic Prep 14-0 in a Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game, defeated Timothy Christian 23-5 in a MSC crossover game, lost to Addison Trail 7-4 and lost to Riverside-Brookfield 9-5 in another MSC Blue match-up.

“There wasn’t much to like about the ICCP game. They outplayed us in all areas,” said Mello. “Against Timothy, we played most of our young girls and it was great to see them have a lot of really good at-bats. The Addison Trail game, which was a 7 p.m. game following our 4:30 game at Timothy, was a really fun environment. We really competed at a high level and came up a little short at the end. To most of the team, the Riverside-Brookfield game was our best showing of the season. Our pitching did an excellent job against a really good hitting team and then we were able to produce 14 hits of our own. Even though we lost, there was a lot to build on from that game.”

Through late last week, Joni Lucas was leading the team in hitting at .600.

Rose Riley was tops in on-base percentage at .667 and slugging percentage at 1.400. Isa Lozada is the team leader in hits with 14. Gianna Mendoza is leading in doubles with four. Reyna DeLaTorre and Riley are tied for the lead in triples with two each. Lozada is tops in home runs with four, RBI with 14 and runs scored with 12. Ashley Milano and Lozada are tied for the team lead in stolen bases with seven.

Mendoza is the leader in innings pitched (12.1) and wins (2). Ashley Mitchell and Claira Panos are tied for

the team lead in strikeouts with 13 each. Mitchell is tops in ERA at 3.50 and Cynthia Ibarra is tops in WHIP with a 1.50.

“The team has really been swinging the bats well the last three games,” said Mello. “After we struggled against ICCP, we have really started hitting the ball hard. Also, our pitching has been excellent this season. We just need to back them up with better defense.”

Mello said the team is hard at work to improve on the defensive end and improving its offensive output against strong pitching. “We need to continue working on our defense,” he said. “Not only must we make the routine plays, but we need to make a few tough plays each game to help our pitchers.”

Mello had no shortage of players to single out for recent superior play, starting with sophomore transfer Gianna Saldana. “Gianna has hit long home runs in two of the last three games,” he said. “She is certainly bringing a power aspect to our lineup that we don’t usually have.”

Freshman Madison Spencer, Mello noted, was forced to play center field against R-B “and responded by making some outstanding plays in the field.

She is someone we are comfortable putting at numerous positions in the field.”

Mello added Spencer’s game in center field against R-B qualifies as an eye-opening effort, as did what Saldana did against Timothy Christian. “Gianna had back-to-back at-bats resulting in a double off the top of the fence followed by a long home run,” he pointed out.

Fenton has a busy week scheduled with games against Walther Christian, Aurora Central Catholic, St. Ignatius (at UIC) and Chicago Whitney Young on the docket.

Health Department releases latest data on childhood obesity in DuPage County The DuPage County Health Department has released the latest obesity data for DuPage County in a publication titled “Childhood Obesity in DuPage County (December 2017).”

What the data say: After a decline in recent years, the obesity rate holds steady among school-aged youth. In 2016-2017, more than one-in-seven (14.8 percent) kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade public school students in DuPage County had obesity.

Additionally, in 2016-2017, 44 percent of students with obesity had an elevated blood pressure (BP) reading.

enrolled in DuPage County’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program (15.1 percent in 2016) continues to exceed the national WIC rate (14.5 percent in 2014), stressing the need for early intervention.

(StatePoint) Misuse and abuse of drugs and alcohol among the elderly is one of the fastest growing health problems in the U.S., according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), yet it can often be mistaken for normal aging behavior.

The statistics are alarming: according to The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc., 2.5 million older adults have an alcohol or drug problem; while a SAMHSA report shows that the use of illicit drugs, combining drugs with alcohol, and the nonmedical use of pharmaceuticals, results in an average of nearly 300 emergency room visits nationwide each day for those aged 65 and older.

Despite these disturbing trends, substance abuse among the elderly often goes unrecognized and untreated. According to “The Tough Talk: Aging Parents and Substance Abuse,” a new survey commissioned by WellCare Health Plans, Inc., adult children of elderly parents know very little about the drugs and alcohol their parents consume, and three-quarters say it’s possible that they may not even know if their parent had a substance abuse problem, likely mistaking the signs -- such as slurred speech, dozing off and confusion -- for normal behaviors of aging.

“While family members may not feel equipped to identify an abuse problem, they are often the ones who can best spot changes in behaviors that could indicate one exists,” said Kevin Middleton, Psy.D., vice president, behavioral health, WellCare. “Given the seri-

ous consequences that overuse or abuse of drugs and alcohol can have on seniors, it’s important to look for those signs and also ask questions that will help determine if and what kind of help is needed.”

Dr. Middleton advises those with aging loves ones to be aware of the following.

• Life Changes Can Trigger Abuse: Retirement, the death of a spouse or dear friend, the loss of a pet and other significant life events, are times when the elderly are most likely to begin misusing or abusing drugs and alcohol.

IC Catholic Prep baseball team defeats Fenton and Guerin Prep Knights steal 11 bases in game

The IC Catholic Prep baseball team went 2-1 during a recent three-game stretch against Wheaton Academy, Fenton and Guerin Prep.

The Knights started the week with a 4-1 loss to Wheaton Academy in a MSC Blue Division game. IC Catholic Prep took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Wheaton scored three in the bottom of the frame and added another run in the third inning.

Griffen Eichhorn, CJ Slowinski, CJ West, Andrew Falduto and Michael Liszka each had a hit for the Knights.

West had the team’s only RBI that scored Eichhorn. The Knights did steal six bases in the game with West and Eichhorn each swiping two. West took the loss. He allowed six hits,

three earned runs and struck out six in six innings of work.

IC Catholic Prep then upended Fenton 13-3 in MSC Blue play at Redmond Park in Bensenville. Fenton led 2-1 after the third inning, but the Knights quickly took the lead with four runs in the fourth. IC Catholic Prep added a single run in the fifth and then tacked on four in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Knights had nine hits in the contest.

Falduto went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Slowinski went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Peter Sykora went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Tommy Ryan was 1-for-3 with three RBI and two walks. Slowinski and Ryan each doubled in the game.

The Knights again were proficient on the base paths with 11 stolen bases. Falduto stole four bases, while Eichhorn had two. Seven different IC Catholic Prep players stole bases.

Willowbrook boys tennis team fighting through poor weather conditions Warriors excited about talent in singles lineup

Willowbrook boys tennis coach Ed DeLaCruz is in agreement with everybody else about the recent lessthan-ideal weather.

“The weather honestly has put a damper on the season for the last two weeks,” he said.

Mother Nature had allowed Willowbrook to only play two dual matches through early last week. The Warriors defeated Riverside-Brookfield 6-1 way back on March 19 and then lost 7-0 to Glenbard East early last week in non-conference play.

The Warriors were scheduled to play a pair of West Suburban Conference Gold Division contests last week against Morton and Downers Grove South.

Willowbrook is coming off a 2017 season where it finished third in the WSC Gold for a third year in a row.

Hinsdale South won the conference last year and DeLaCruz said the Hornets again are one of the favorites in the league.

Willowbrook is led by team captains Kiran Pentela (senior) and junior Drake DelValle. Pentela plays both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while DelValle plays No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Pentela was an all-WSC Gold selection last year at No. 3 doubles.

This makes us a complete team, but we will need it this year because it will be one of the most competitive conference seasons I can remember. Along with us, Leyden is very talented. Morton, Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South know we are closing the gap regarding making a run for conference. We have the depth to challenge some spots this season. I’m more than confident saying we will have some all-conference players by the end of the season.”

Stellar performances and exquisite music bring the Elmhurst Symphony’s season to a rousing conclusion on Saturday, May 5, at 7:00 p.m. when Baird Dodge, the principal second violin of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, stars in an evening of thrilling performances featuring music of well-loved European composers. Stanger Young Artist Audition winner, violist Aditi Prakash, also joins the orchestra as a featured soloist. Our guest artists and the ESO, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, will take you on a musical journey through Europe as Dodge plays music of Saint-Saëns and Prakash performs the first movement of Walton’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. Also on the program are Weber’s Overture to Oberon and Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber. This is a concert you will not want to miss.

Generous sponsors of the concert are Keith and Irmgard Olson (scores for the music of Weber, Saint-Saëns, and Hindemith) and the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst (music for Prakash’s performance.)

The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra performs at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, located at 149 W. Brush Hill Rd. in Elmhurst.

The church has accessible parking and facilities; parking is free. The concert experience at ECRC is enhanced by the informative and lively discussion, Behind the Music Stand, led by audience favorite Dr. Ted Hatmaker, which takes place at 5:45 p.m. prior to the concert.

Concert tickets are $35 for adults, $32 for seniors, and $12 for students. Group and family rates are also available. Subscribe to the 2018-19 season at the concert and receive the early bird rate on tickets and a Symphony bar. Subscribers can choose a series of three, four or five concerts for the upcoming season.
