Aviation Commissioner visits Village On Friday, April 5, the Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie Rhee toured Bensenville with Village President Frank DeSimone and Village Manager Evan K. Summers.

While on the tour, DeSimone identified some of the Villages most heavily noise-impacted areas like Hillside Drive, which experiences over one hundred flyovers per day. They also drove though the industrial district to demonstrate how new businesses are moving to Bensenville specifically for its strategic location of being near O’Hare International Airport while also being located in DuPage County.

Some of these include businesses like Zurn and Allmetal Inc which has over one hundred employees in their facility. In addition, they discussed ways to further improve the CDA’s property located at the corner of Green Street and York Road.

Fabian recognized as ‘emerging female leader’ in Springfield State Representative Deanne M. Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) welcomed Jenifer Fabian, the Executive Director of People’s Resource Center in DuPage, to Springfield on Tuesday for a women’s brunch that honored the contributions of emerging female leaders from throughout the state.

People’s Resource Center serves residents of DuPage County by providing an array of services to get people on their feet, such as: food, clothes, social services, job training and job search assistance.

Their offices serve more than 30,000 residents in need every year.

“Fabian is making a real difference in our community by helping families get the resources to get back on their feet when they fall on hard times,” said Mazzochi. “It is my pleasure to recognize her contributions to DuPage County and promote everything People’s Resource Center does in the community.”

Fabian joined almost 40 emerging female leaders from across the state who are each taking bold steps to make Illinois a better place to live and work.

“We need to know what is keeping people up at night,” Mazzochi stated. “Where government is working for us, and where it is failing. Strong women who are in the trenches every day and the glue of their communities need to have their voices and concerns heard and drive Springfield policy discussions.

• Advanced transportation technologies grew 25.9 percent in 2019, adding 2,144 jobs.

More than 123,000 Illinoisans now work in clean energy industries after adding 4,717 jobs in 2018, according to a new analysis of energy jobs data from Clean Energy Trust (CET) and the national, nonpartisan business group E2 (Environmental Entrepreneurs). Overall, Illinois now employs 89,277 more workers in clean energy than fossil fuels (33,970).

Illinois’ clean energy workforce employs more than seven times as many people than all the computer programmers and web developers in the state, according to Department of Labor Employment Statistics.

Led by 26 percent growth in advanced transportation, Illinois’s clean energy jobs now make up 2 percent of all jobs in Illinois with employers expecting 8.5 percent increase in jobs for 2019.

Across all industries, clean jobs grew 4 percent in 2018.

“It may seem strange to say this about an industry that now employs more than 120,000, but the clean energy economy is only just getting started in Illinois,” said Jonathan Roberts, VP of Development in Midwest at Soltage Solar. “Solar development has yet to be fully unleashed, and still clean jobs already make up 1 out of every 50 jobs—growing faster than statewide employment. This report is proof Illinois workers and businesses will be reaping the benefits of clean energy even more in the coming years.”

Energy Efficiency once again led all clean energy sectors in Illinois, employing 89,469 workers – accounting for seven in 10 of all clean energy workers. Renewable Energy Generation came in second (16,954), followed by Advanced Transportation (10,417).

Released Tuesday, April 9, Clean Jobs Midwest highlights Illinois’s growing importance in America’s transition to renewable energy, with solar and wind energy now home to 14,047 jobs combined.

Contributing the most clean energy jobs were Cook County (54,071), DuPage County (13,147), and Lake County (5,946). There are 93,086 jobs in Chicago and St. Louis metro areas combined while 13,453 jobs came from the Illinois’s rural

House bill offers student financial aid to undocumented immigrants

The Illinois House on April 11 passed a bill offering state-funded student financial aid to two groups who don’t qualify for federal aid, undocumented immigrants and transgender individuals who have not registered for the draft.

“This bill creates equity,” said Rep. Elizabeth Hernandez, a Cicero Democrat and lead sponsor of the bill. “The state has already invested in these students through their education. They are residents of Illinois. Universities across the state and community colleges are supportive of this bill. This is a solution that is in the best interests of the state of Illinois and the communities we all represent.”

Federal student financial aid is available only to United States citi-

zens. In addition, male students who are 18 or older must have complied with federal requirements to register for military selective service, something that many transgender women do not do.

Hernandez said passage of the bill, House Bill 2691, would provide access to the state’s Monetary Award Program, or MAP grants, to an estimated 3,000 to 3,500 potential students who don’t currently qualify for student financial aid.

The bill would also remove all caps on how many credit hours a student can fund using MAP grants.

Currently, students are limited to 135 credit hours, but Hernandez said that disproportionately affects students of color who come from underfunded school districts and who often need to take remedial courses before they take

standard freshman-level classes, and therefore need more time to complete a degree program.

Illinois is one of 16 states that offer in-state tuition rates to undocumented immigrants, if they meet all other residency and admission requirements, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

NCSL also notes that at least nine states—California, Connecticut, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington—offer student financial aid to certain undocumented immigrants while others, such as Utah, allow public institutions to offer them financial aid using private funding sources.

In some states, those laws have been the subject of bitter controversy amid the fierce national debate over U.S. immigration policy. But in the Il-

linois House, opponents of the bill did not talk about immigration issues and instead focused their arguments on the potential cost.

Rep. Allen Skillicorn, a Republican from East Dundee, pointed to a fiscal note for the bill that said if all of the students who become eligible under the bill were to use those benefits, it could add about $9 million to the cost of the MAP grants. That means lawmakers would either have to appropriate more money for the program, or administrators of the program would have to shift grant funds away from other recipients.

Hernandez, though, said the bill is intended only to expand eligibility to the state financial aid program to more needy students, and that the bill itself carries no additional costs for the state.

The bill passed, by a vote of 66-47.

As Illinois kicks off the road construction season, drivers should take great care to look out for the safety of construction workers.

State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) passed Senate Bill 1496 last week, which would increase the maximum penalty for hitting a construction worker to $25,000 from the current

$10,000 fine.

“Distracted drivers are a major problem in Illinois,” Cullerton said. “As we start the construction season, it is imperative that we take every necessary step to deter drivers from taking their eyes off the road.”

Cullerton filed Senate Bill 1496 in response to an accident in which Bart-

lett resident Frank Caputo, a flagger, was struck and killed while working on the Tri-State Tollway near O’Hare International Airport.

Caputo was working construction near Rosemont around 10 p.m. September 2018, when a car drove into the closed lanes and fatally injured him.

“I made a pledge to honor Frank

Caputo by finding ways to keep his fellow workers safe,” Cullerton said.

“While a fine won’t physically stop a crash, we believe raising it will send a message to Illinois drivers about the severity of this problem.”

Senate Bill 1496 passed the Senate with unanimous support and now heads to the House for consideration.

State Senator Glowiak measure creates dementia czar for state government To advocate for Illinois Alzheimer’s patients, State Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) passed a measure to create a specialized position within the Illinois Department of Public Health to oversee the state’s Alzheimer’s efforts.

“I know as someone who cared for a husband and mother with Alzheimer’s disease, it can be stressful,” Glowiak said. “We need to ensure that caregivers have someone fighting to

help them provide their loved ones with the best possible care.”

Glowiak’s Senate Bill 1726 creates the position of Dementia Coordinator in the Department of Public Health to oversee the implementation of the Illinois Alzheimer’s Disease State Plan.

Having a dedicated coordinator would help to address the complications and cost of a disease that has only gotten deadlier.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Illinois

State Plan was established in January 2014 and is required to be updated every three years.

Nationally, the cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia was estimated at nearly $236 billion in 2016, and is expected to increase to $1.1 trillion in 2019 dollars by mid-century. Medicare and Medicaid cover about 68 percent of the total health care and longterm payments. In 2016, the Medicaid

cost of caring for people with Alzheimer’s in Illinois was $1.5 billion.

Currently, the state plan cannot be implemented by IDPH due to lack of staff and other resources.

“Under the leadership of a statewide Dementia Coordinator, those living with Alzheimer’s will have a designated advocate to fight for state policies that will improve their level of care,” Glowiak said. “This new position would ensure our state is

actively engaged in the fight against dementia.”

An equivalent position exists in state government in Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Puerto Rico.

Senate Bill 1726 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and now moves to the House for consideration.

House OKs doubling of fines for drivers who pass stopped school buses

Drivers who don’t stop for school buses could see a doubling in ticket fines under a proposed state law that passed the House on April 11.

House Bill 1873, sponsored by GOP Rep. Darren Bailey of Xenia, doubles the fine for first offenses to $300 from $150, and for second offenses to $1,000 from $500.

It passed the House on Thursday morning by a vote of 74-16, with 12 representatives voting present after extended and heated debate.

Bailey called the bill a matter of “public safety, to protect school children as they load and unload off buses.”

Critics said increasing penalties don’t deter people from violating the law, and provide only extra hardship for those who already have the least ability to pay them.

Chicago Democrat Melissa Conyears-Ervin was the first to voice opposition, saying she could not support the bill if the public is not educated about it simultaneously.

“Residents that can’t pay it may lose their license, may in turn not be able to go to work, and may in turn not be able to put food on the table for their children.

“There are people that will have no clue of this legislation, and all the bill will do is put them in a deeper hole,” Conyears-Ervin said.

Bailey said he’d be willing to work with her on educating the public about the change in fine structure, because education “is what will raise the awareness to protect our children.”

Others, like Jacksonville Republican C.D. Davidsmeyer, said a driver’s first violation of the law should be enough education.

HB 1873 changes only the fine

structure for school bus violations.

It does not change other provisions of current law for drivers to have their licenses suspended for three months for first violations and for a year for second violations.

In those cases, drivers can apply to the Secretary of State’s office for a restricted driver permit, which allows them to drive to and from work.

Plainfield GOP Rep. Mark Batinick, one of the bill’s sponsors, said even with the doubled fines, Illinois’ laws for failing to stop for school buses are weak.

“I’m sitting over here stunned that we’re putting the price tag to say [an extra] $150 is too much for a school kid,” Batinick said.

He referenced other states’ penalties, some of which include jail time and fines as much as $10,000.

Minnesota, he said, has a $500 fine and 90 days of jail time for a first offense.

“We’re at the low end of the fines on this, which is probably why it keeps happening, because nobody cares about the fine,” Batinick yelled.

Bailey said Illinois school bus drivers reported more than 20,000 instances where buses were passed while the “STOP” arm was out in 2017, according to a survey by ABC 7 in Chicago.

Opponents maintained that doubling fines is regressive, and would result only in financial hurt for those who can’t pay it.

“This bill is based on a flawed premise,” said Democrat Will Guzzardi of Chicago. “The idea [is] that by raising penalties on certain types of behaviors, we will deter those behaviors.

“Raising the fines isn’t going to keep our kids any safer. It will just take more money out of the pockets of people who can least afford it.”

Graduated tax amendment clears Senate committee Bill sponsor says change wouldn’t make it easier to increase taxes

A constitutional amendment which would allow the state to adopt a graduated income tax is on its way to the full state Senate after clearing committee on party lines April 10.

The measure, SJRCA 1, would give the Legislature the authority to tax higher margins of income at higher rates. If three-fifths of each the Illinois House and Senate vote to put the question on the ballot, voters will decide in November 2020 if that authority is granted.

Senate sponsor Don Harmon, an Oak Park Democrat, said the amendment is necessary to bring tax fairness to the state, as the bottom 20 percent of Illinois earners pay 14 percent of their total income in taxes, while the top 1 percent of earners pay 7 percent of their income in taxes. Those numbers are contained in the “Terrible 10” report conducted by the Washington D.C.-based Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, which has been characterized as left-leaning.

Currently, the state constitution mandates a flat tax of 4.95 percent on every penny of income. Under the proposal touted by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, only earners whose income exceeds $1 million would be taxed at a flat rate—7.95 percent==on every penny of income.

For all other earners, different rates ranging from 4.75 percent to 7.85 percent would apply to different margins of income. Those making $250,000 or less—about 97 percent of taxpayers, according to the governor’s office—would pay less in taxes than they do currently. The proposal would increase the property tax credit by 20 percent and would include per-child tax credits up to $100.

While Harmon said he expects the Legislature to pass a specific proposal by the end of the legislative session, Republicans continued to question the likelihood of the rates remaining as they are in Pritzker’s proposal for any measure of time.

Senate Minority Leader Bill Brady, a Bloomington Republican, opposed the amendment at committee Wednesday. He said he believed it opened up the ability to “raise taxes even further” and “play games” with the tax code by removing language which states “there may be no more than one such tax imposed by the state.”

Todd Maisch of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce said this could allow the state to add “surcharges” or assessments on separate lines of income for taxpayers.

Harmon dismissed that argument, noting that language was in place only to prevent the Legislature from imposing a “synthesized graduated tax” by proposing multiple rates, and he said the amendment would give no greater taxing authority to the state than it already possesses when it comes to varying income sources.

Dale Righter, a Mattoon Republican, opposed the amendment as well.

“Over the last 20 years, the states that have graduated rate structures have lowered the threshold of income one must make in order to qualify for the highest marginal rate 23 times, and in 18 of those 23 times, that figure has dipped below $100,000.”

Harmon said it won’t be any easier to raise taxes under the new plan.

“In the 50 years or so that Illinois has had an income tax, how many times have we raised the income tax rates?” he asked. “You can count them on your fingers of one hand and not use all of them. It’s a difficult vote to take. That would be true with a fair tax or the current flat tax.”

The state’s income tax was enacted in 1969 at a 2.5 percent rate, and it jostled between that rate and 3 percent for the next 42 years. In 2011, it was temporarily raised to 5 percent for a four-year period, dropping back to 3.75 percent in 2015. The current 4.95 percent rate hit the books in 2017.

But Righter said tax hikes would be easier under a graduated tax, at least for high income earners, because “politicians are pretty good at class warfare” and could package the tax hikes as taxes on “people over there.”

Mark Denzler of the Illinois Manufacturer’s Association opposed the graduated tax as well, noting it will

remove one of “the last positives” for business stability by getting rid of the flat tax.

He said the income tax would “create an unholy trifecta” in Illinois, consisting of the second-highest property taxes in the nation, the highest sales tax and a new, higher top graduated rate.

While the bill raises the corporate flat tax rate to 7.95 from 7 percent, Denzler said the actual top corporate rate will be 10.45 percent due to a corporate personal property replacement tax levied by the state.

Dave Lowitzki, a consultant representing SEIU Healthcare, Everthrive, Sargent Shriver Center on Poverty Law, the AIDS Foundation, the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, and Heartland Alliance, pointed to the human toll of revenue shortfalls for programs the state has already committed to funding.

“We saw the state suffer for two years under a major budget crisis,” Lowitzki said. “Without a budget, social service agencies were forced to scale back or close their doors. We know part of that was politics, but the real reason the politics happened is because we didn’t have revenue.”

According to the nonprofit online political encyclopedia Ballotpedia, 37 states have higher per capita spending rates than Illinois. Harmon said the alternatives to a graduated tax were 15 percent spending cuts to all state departments, or a 20 percent increase to the current flat tax rate of 4.95 percent to a 6.95 percent rate.

But opponents, including Orphe Divounguy, chief economist of the nonprofit conservative think tank Illinois Policy Institute, said the state has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. He said Pritzker’s estimates “don’t add up,” and in order to raise the revenue necessary to close budget gaps, the middle class would have to pay higher rates if further measures such as pension reform are not enacted.

“It’s not addressing the root causes of our state’s problems. We know what the state’s problems are, they’re on the spending side, and no reforms have been introduced to deal with them,” Divounguy said.

But Deputy Gov. Dan Hynes said specific legislative counterproposals from elected Republicans have not been brought to the governor.

State Senate passes bill to keep elected officials from collecting salary plus pension

Local elected officials and county board members may soon be barred from simultaneously drawing both a salary and pension benefits from the same post.

The Illinois Senate on April 10 approved legislation to prevent representatives from double-dipping. For example, a county board member who has served long enough to earn a pension would have to wait until leaving office to begin collecting the benefit.

Sponsor Terry Link, a Democrat from Vernon Hills, said local officials in his home district of Lake County are “abusing” the opportunity. When the measure was in committee, he learned other units of local government were experiencing the same issue.

“Right now, you have a number of elected officials on the county board serving as county board members and receiving a pension plus their salary at the same time,” he said.

Link added that he is currently qualified to receive his pension from the state as a legislator, but has not chosen to do so.

“If I were to say, ‘OK, I do not want to contribute to the pension anymore but I want to collect my pension and still serve in the General Assembly,’ I think that people would be a little upset because it would basically be doubling my salary,” he said.

Republican Sen. Paul Schimpf, from Waterloo, said he understood what Link was trying to accomplish with the bill, but heard concerns from his constituents.

“This just strikes me that we’re changing the rules kind of midstream,” he said. “I think some of my constituents are going to feel like they’re being punished for their service.”

The legislation is Senate Bill 1236. It succeeded in the chamber by a vote of 45 to 6, and arrived in the House on April 11.

Sen. Glowiak on board with ‘Tobacco 21’

Illinois will join other states in raising the smoking age to 21 after the governor signed legislation supported by State Sen. Suzy Glowiak.

Glowiak (D-Western Springs) advocated for the passage of “Tobacco 21” (House Bill 345), which raises the legal smoking age from 18 to 21, prohibiting the purchase of alternative nicotine products, electronic cigarettes and tobacco products by individuals under the age of 21.

“The health risks of smoking are well known, but young adults still have access to tobacco products,” Glowiak said. “This new law will help stop this dangerous addiction at an early age. It is absolutely imperative that we take every necessary step to help save lives.”

Glowiak cited studies that found 90 percent of all adult smokers started when they were kids.

In Illinois, 34 jurisdictions have raised the age, including Chicago, Highland Park, Buffalo Grove, Evanston and Peoria.

A key benefit to raising the age is documented decreases in the number of high schoolers who smoke.

“Stopping the cycle of addiction will protect our young adults from the numerous early and long-term negative effects of smoking such as early health disease, reductions in lung function, and growth and respiratory problems,” Glowiak said.

“Raising the age is a proven method to reduce smoking rates among our teens who can be easily addicted to the negative effects of nicotine and are susceptible to beginning a deadly lifelong dependency.”

This measure was supported by the DuPage County Health Department, American Lung Association in Illinois, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association along with many others.

Mixed up food combinations of the Midwest and beyond

Scrolling Facebook I read that cinnamon rolls and chili were “a beloved combo” in the Midwest. I hail from the Midwest and had never heard of that pairing. Does not sound appealing, but it made me hungry for a cinnamon roll. So I posted this tidbit of info with a yummy photo.

Another Midwesterner, I’ll assume an Illinois gal like me, posted that my leg was being pulled. Another gal immediately chimed in and said she grew up in Kansas and it is indeed a thing.

I then found an internet source that states chili and cinnamon rolls go together in many Midwest states, but Illinois was not mentioned. A fast food joint in Nebraska, Runza, offers a chili and cinnamon roll combo, and school lunch menus across the land started serving these two together back in the 1960s.

Hmm. Okay.

There are many food pairings that we don’t think about and take for granted or don’t know about at all so I guess it’s where you come from and what you are used to.

Through her I saw the magic of motherhood – the wonder and splendor of raising and loving a batchful of boys.

Tell people how you really feel. Be honest, but not mean. Be strong, but not callous. Trust your opinion, but listen. Be confident, but not cocky.

You’re never too old to enjoy a good giggle. Do it well and do it often. Laugh at life and at yourself

and all the inside jokes you’ve established with your sister over the years.

Stand up for what you believe in. Question authority if you have good reason to do so.

Pets are important and valued members of the family. Love them accordingly and make room for them on the couch.

Never quit learning. Pick your interests and make them good ones.

Nothing is off limits. Make jello and make lotion. Try everything in between. Share your newfound knowledge with others and especially your sister.

Don’t be cookie cutter. Strive always to be your own unique self.

Don’t follow the crowd unless the crowd is headed to a party or the beach, or in the ideal circumstances both.

You can’t pick your sister, but you can pick your friends. And in the best case scenario a sister is a little of both. I’m thankful for mine.

(Because we are too lazy to use a fork and need to shove all our food in our mouth at once.)

My husband is an adventurous eater and will try any food combination. He found a recipe a few summers ago for a refreshing salad of watermelon, cucumber, feta cheese and fresh mint. Fantastic.

Whatever food stuffs we have left over, he combines into a new creation and he is a wonderful alchemist. His inventions usually are noteworthy and delicious. At least to him.

He’s also the guy who puts whatever kind of chips we have directly

into his sandwich so he has crunch with every bite. I like crunch too but prefer my chips on my plate in their own little pile. I am talented enough to pop a chip in my mouth before, after, or even during a bite of my sandwich, but do not want my chips between the bread.

Sandwiches no longer need bread. Certainly pitas are popular.

As are waffles, pancakes, and even donuts to hold the burger or meat or whatever sandwich fixings you have.

Crazy times. I’ve seen an article for ketchup on popcorn but that grosses me out. In Paris you have the choice of sugar or salt on your popcorn at the movie theater.

For some, apple pie with a slice cheese melted on top feels like home. For others, they’ve never seen such a thing. Maybe you grew up with peanut butter and bologna sandwiches. Maybe that idea makes your stomach turn. (And that peanut butter again! It’s everywhere!)

Wherever you come from, you have your own likings. To each his own. But chili and cinnamon rolls do not do it for me. What do I want with my cinnamon roll? Another cinnamon roll. And a napkin. You can have my chili. And put peanut butter in it.

The DuPage County Heroin Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce recently outlined its framework and means to reduce the number of opioid deaths in DuPage County over the next three years.

At its Jan. 18 meeting, the Taskforce agreed to five objectives to address the ongoing public health crisis facing our community.

“Reducing access to opioids and increasing access to treatment is particularly important, considering recent news from Coroner Dr. Richard Jorgensen that the epidemic continues to have an acute impact on our County,” said HOPE Taskforce co-chairman and County Board member Greg Hart.

“While the 2018 overdose death numbers are concerning, we have a dedicated group partners on the HOPE Taskforce doing important work in our community. The HOPE Taskforce is committed to bringing forth new and innovative solutions in the coming months and years that will hopefully make a positive impact for the individuals, families, and DuPage County communities impacted by this epidemic.”

Stone second graders visit Village highlights Half of Stone School’s 2nd grade classes visited the Addison Historical Museum today, with stops in the Museum, the Coach House and the Century House. After learning about their community’s past, they joined half of the Stone 3rd grade classes for lunch at Village Hall, followed by a visit with Mayor Veenstra. The field trip concluded with a visit to the Addison Public Library where students participated in building tours and a craft activity.

The hands-on and up-close experiences with these community resources ties into the 2nd grade social science curriculum. In previous years, the trip fit into the 3rd grade curriculum, so this year the Village of Addison is supporting the transition, by inviting all of the Addison School District 4 students in 2nd and 3rd grade to participate in the activity.

The remaining Stone School 2nd and 3rd graders will be taking their history/government field trip on April 23.

District 88 Board of Education Consolidated Election results

During the recent Consolidated General Election held Tuesday, April 2 four persons were elected to fouryear terms as members of the District 88 School Board of Education. Eight candidates were on the ballot, with the highest vote-getters being incumbent Donna Craft Cain, Amy Finnegan, Lisa M. Knauf and Daniel J. Olson.

Pitching a major positive for Willowbrook softball team Warriors also excelling at the plate

Softball teams with pitching tend to do good things.

Willowbrook’s roster has plenty of pitching depth that has, indeed, done good things in the early going of the 2019 season.

Through the team’s first seven games (Willowbrook was 4-3), sophomore Caroline Dooley had a win, while freshman Caitlyn Kulczyski had two wins against Schaumburg and Proviso West. She struck out 13 in her first game against Proviso West. Freshman Kayla Neff had a win against Schaumburg as well.

“With the exception of one game, pitching has been a strength of ours,” said Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos. “Caitlyn has pitched really well for us. She has great movement on the ball, but more importantly she has a great attitude and leads by example on the field. She’s also one of our leaders in batting average. Caroline Dooley has had to face some tough competition on the mound.

She had a great first outing against Plainfield Central. She only gave up two hits and struck out nine. She also is consistent at bat and when she is

not pitching, she is doing a really nice job in the outfield.”

Karos also has seen her team’s bats warm up throughout the first seven games. “We had a little slow start with our bats this year, but with each game we are getting more runners in scoring position and now we just have to execute to get those runs in,” she said. “We only are seven games in and I think the more we play the better we will be at fine-tuning the things we need to be successful going into conference play. With playing so few games so far, it’s hard to say what we have improved on the most.

Areas we are looking to improve on currently are cuts and relays, and we always are hoping to be stronger on defense.

“Our hope is to get better at all aspects of the game. I’m hoping to see our offense start getting us more runs to take a little pressure off the pitching staff. We are still young in some positions, so there will be times we make mistakes, but I’m hoping we can keep recovering and battling like we have been and get a little better each game.”

Karos also had high praise for senior Amy Bussa, Neff and Annemarie Knudtson. “They have been consistent at the plate, providing us with either runs scored or RBI.”

Addison Trail boys gymnastics teams hits 132 in meet Sitko continues improvement on parallel bars; Bastian helping in many different ways

The Addison Trail boys gymnastics team reached a 132.0 in its recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division triangular meet win against Leyden and Downers Grove South.

Addison Trail was 2-1 overall and 2-1 in WSC Gold action through late last week.

Individually, Jakub Sitko scored an 8.5 on parallel bars recently.

“Jakub continues to build on his routine as he attempts to make state,” said Addison Trail coach Mike Galfi.

Galfi said his squad continues to add new wrinkles to its routines.

“We have started to add in a number of new skills in many of our routines,” he said. “The guys on the team have done a great job of including those skills into the routines without any loss of form.”

Rings and pommel horse have been two events where key progress has been made. “Coach Kyle Padera has done an excellent job with the gymnasts on rings and pommel horse,” said Galfi. “We have made a number of gains on those two events in particular.”

Galfi said Jake Bastian has been another bright spot for the team.

“Jake has continued to develop his routines and add new skills,” he explained. “He has been the most improved gymnast for us this year, and as an all-around gymnast, is one of the most valuable on the team as well.”

The coach noted team chemistry has been outstanding. “Our gymnasts have a strong bond within the gym and do a great job of supporting each other while developing their own abilities,” said Galfi.

Addison Trail battled Hinsdale South earlier this week in a WSC Gold dual. The Blazers head to Glenbard West Saturday for a meet.

In recent action, Willowbrook dropped a 16-2 non-conference decision to Plainfield South. Caroline Dooley, Kulczyski and Katie Pettinger each had a hit. Dooley had two RBI. Kulczyski pitched the final 5 2/3 innings and struck out 10.

In a 17-1 West Suburban Conference crossover win in four innings against Proviso West, Willowbrook scored 10 runs in the second inning and had 14 hits.

Knudtson went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and four RBI. Bussa was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Emma Barrington went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and five RBI. Mikayla Tomaszewski had two hits as well. Knudtson, Samantha Mishlove, Barrington, Kulczyski and Tomaszewski each had a double.

Bussa tripled, while Barrington homered. Knudtson stole two bases.

Kulczyski pitched two innings and struck out five, while Neff did the same thing in her two innings of work.

Willowbrook then swept a non-conference doubleheader against Burbank Reavis. The Warriors won the first game 17-0, thanks in part to 10 runs in the second inning. The Warriors had 19 hits in the contest.

All nine Willowbrook players had at least one hit and one run scored.

Eight of the nine players drove in at least one run.

Knudtson, Mishlove, Dooley, Bussa, Barrington and Kulczyski each had a double, while Tomaszewski had two doubles. Dooley, Bussa, Barrington and Kulczyski each had

a triple, giving Willowbrook 12 extra-base hits in the game. The Warriors had 32 total bases in the game in 31 at-bats.

Dooley was the winning pitcher.

She threw a four-inning two-hitter and struck out eight, while walking none.

In the nightcap, Willowbrook was a 15-1 winner against Reavis in six innings. The Warriors scored six runs in the sixth inning and had 17 hits.

Fenton softball team getting it done with the sticks Bison were 7-4 through first 11 games

Hit the ball and good things tend to happen.

That’s exactly what’s occurring with the Fenton softball team. The Bison were 7-4 overall through their first 11 games and started 2-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action.

In recent play, Fenton dropped a 15-2 decision to Aurora Central Catholic, beat Chicago Christian 149, lost to Guerin Prep 15-11 and beat East Aurora 13-0.

Through late last week, Cynthia Ibarra was leading the team in batting average at .565, while Isa Lozada was hitting .486. Ibarra had a .697 on-base percentage, while Lozada was at .617.

Lozada was the team-leader in hits with 17, while Payton Pugliese and Gianna Saldana each had 15. Ibarra had five doubles, while Lozada and Saldana each had four. Lozada was the team-leader in triples with three

and was tied with Claira Panos for the team lead in home runs with two.

Lozada had a team-best 19 RBI, while Ibarra and Saldana each had 14 RBI. Lozada and Ashley Milano each had 19 runs scored, while Lozada had 12 stolen bases and Milano had five.

“We are swinging the bats really well right now,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello. “We have a team batting average of .374 and have a lot of big hits from all nine spots in the order.

We also have been doing a nice job of getting our bunts down.”

In the pitching circle, Ibarra had three wins. Ashley Mitchell was the team leader in strikeouts with 21, while Panos had 19. Panos had a team-best 3.71 ERA. Mello added further key improvement has come from the simple task of playing catch. “It has improved a lot,” he said. “It has been a big focus from day one. It is still not at the level we would like, but the improvement has been really good. The high-level teams have no issues playing catch.

If we are striving to get to that level, it needs to start with playing catch.

“We can continue to get better in

the field against the better teams on our schedule. We need to keep our focus and not let one mistake become a bunch of mistakes. We really have hurt ourselves with errors in the games against the better teams.”

Mello noted Ibarra and Saldana, in particular, have been stepping it up of late. “Cynthia has moved into the cleanup spot in the lineup and has responded with big hits all season.

She has pitched in four games and recorded a four-inning save against Chicago Christian. Gianna has given us some solid play in right field.

Also, she has solidified the middle of the lineup from the five spot by ranking near the top in a lot of offensive statistics for us.”

Fenton had games scheduled this week against Ridgewood, Elk Grove and Chicago Lake View.

“The willingness to work on improving and becoming better allaround softball players has been fun to watch,” said Mello. “The girls realize the amount of talent we have this season and want to make sure there are no regrets at the end of the season.”

Addison Trail might have a 5-12 overall record, but coach Chad Grant has seen plenty of progress from this group.

“I like our versatility,” he said. “Justin Werderitch, who was our kill leader

for the matches that he’s played in, has missed the last seven matches. We are 1-6 in those matches and have had to move guys around a little bit. Our players have been very flexible and have responded well to the different lineups we have had to use. We are not seeing the results in the win column right now, but it should make us a better team in the long run when we get Justin back.”

The Blazers had a 1-1 mark in West Suburban Conference Gold Division play through their first two conference contests.

In a recent 25-23, 25-22 WSC Gold loss to Hinsdale South, Joe Mosny had seven kills, while Nico Nasti had 13 assists and six digs. Enzo Ciaccia had eight digs and two kills. Michael Tulke had seven digs.

In a 25-13, 25-11 WSC crossover loss to Glenbard West, Patrick Ptasznik and Mosny each had four kills, while Nasti had 13 assists.

Grant has seen particularly strong play from Mosny. “Joe Mosny has been outstanding for us in the middle all year,” he said. “He is aggressive,

smart and has been nearly automatic for us.”

Mosny was leading the team with 96 kills and was tied with Michal Zdanowicz with 10 aces. Tulke was leading with 91 digs and Nasti had 279 setting assists.

“Our serving is our best skill right now,” said Grant. “Five of our six regular servers serve at over 90 percent so we do not give teams free points there.”

Grant added the Blazers also are improving on the block. “We are small

and inexperienced so we have learned a lot about positioning, timing, blocking assignments and communication,” he said.

On the youth front, Zdanowicz, a sophomore, and Ciaccia, a freshman, have been key varsity contributors.

“Michal has been passing very well for us and Enzo has really been more aggressive with his attacking in Justin’s absence,” Grant noted.

“We are moving the ball around very well and have been taking care of a lot of scoring opportunities,” said Del Real. “On defense, the team has come together very well and has been improving as the season goes on.”

Del Real said a significant increase has occurred in the goal-scoring department. “Scoring has been a huge improvement from last year and the team is doing better because of the number of players getting playing time,” he explained.

Del Real cited recent strong play from Tumilty and Florey. “Gracie and Lizzy have been the most notable players and it is due to the help that is being provided from the rest of the team,” he said.

Del Real noted the team is working on continuing to improve its possession game and first-touch situations.

Del Real again cited the depth his team has as a key ingredient in the team’s early success. “I like the fact all the girls are getting a lot of playing time compared to other years,” he said.

The Warriors played District 88 neighbor Addison Trail earlier this week.

Fenton girls badminton coach Brian Hastings isn’t overly concerned about the team’s win-loss record.

“We have been working hard and improving at a consistent rate,” said Hastings. “Unfortunately, the results haven’t always shown the improvement and work that has taken place.”

Marlin Quevedo, Fiza Anwar, Abby Mathew, Virginia Salazar and Susan Martinez all have competed at the varsity level in singles.

Hastings’ top doubles teams have been Toldeo and Anwar, who have three wins at No. 1 doubles, Mathew and Salazar, who have three wins at No. 2 doubles, and Naseer and Martinez, who also have three wins at No. 4 doubles.

At the junior-varsity level, Fenton has been paced by Justice Newsome

and Hailey Esposito in singles, and the tandem of Valerie Acevedo and Lilian Ulloa in doubles.

Freshman standouts thus far for Fenton include Alexa Toledo, Kina Patel, Marissa Warden, Jazmin Camacho and Ana Brito.

“We are excited about continuing to improve,” said Hastings. “We want to finish the season off on a strong note.”

Fenton returned to action earlier this week against Lemont. The Bison have a busy schedule this coming week with contests against Niles North, Lemont and Chicago Taft.

Senate OKs slightly different bill to raise minimum salary for teachers

A second bill raising the minimum annual salary for Illinois teachers to $40,000 found legislative success this week.

Senate Bill 10, sponsored by Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), passed on a 45-11 vote April 11.

It would provide a five-year ramp to increasing Illinois’ minimum teacher salary, from just more than $32,000 in 2020-21 to $40,000 in the 2023-2024 school year.

The substance of the bill is the same as a House bill—HB 2078, sponsored by Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville)—that passed earlier in the week.

But Manar’s bill was approved with an amendment the House version did not have, which directs a state review panel to figure out how Illinois’ most underfunded school districts can get extra state aid to comply with the minimum salary law.

Manar said the state’s school funding formula must be “slightly adjusted” to make up the difference for the

cost of the bill, so that underfunded school districts could pay the minimum salaries.

He said initial estimates are that “just under” $20 million would have to be added to the funding formula to help the neediest school districts comply with the law.

According to SB 10’s amendment, the Professional Review Panel’s recommendations must be made by Jan. 31, 2020.

Manar said an ideal timeline is that the recommendations are adopted in time for the governor’s budget proposal in February 2020.

When that budget passes in May of 2020, Manar said, the school funding formula will have already kicked out the extra money to underfunded school districts, in time for the start of the school year’s classes in August and September.

“We want to have a more level entry point for teachers across the state,” Manar said of the proposed teacher salaries. “Depending on where you teach, where you live, and which districts have openings, your entry level

salary can fluctuate dramatically.

“A base rate would help reassure college students that when they graduate, they’ll have a decent wage.”

Opponents of SB 10 voiced concerns similar to the bill’s House counterpart.

“This is a significant unfunded mandate,” GOP Sen. Chuck Weaver, of Peoria, said. “School districts will be forced to lay people off.”

Sen. Kimberly Lightford, a Maywood Democrat, emphasized that the salary increase to $40,000 is not immediate, but phased in over four years—and still might not be enough.

“A $40,000 starting salary for a teacher is not a lot of money,” she said Thursday. “Yet, it would allow them the decency and respect to raise up our generations to come.”

The state’s current minimum teacher salary law of $10,000 has been unchanged since the 1980s.

Manar said the first salary increase of SB 10—to just more than $32,000 for the 2020-21 school year—is simply that same $10,000 salary adjusted for inflation to the present day.
