Congressman’s ‘Mike on the Move’ tour includes stop in suburbs U.S. Rep. Quigley makes the rounds on Pace Route 301

U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) has begun his own “Mike on the Move” transportation initiative throughout his District and last week, the effort has brought him to the suburbs.

Quigley, a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD), took a bus ride along Pace Route 301 last week to highlight Pace’s integration of Chicago’s many suburban neighborhoods and its work as the largest provider of paratransit service in the United States.

“Chicago is known as a city of neighborhoods, and our suburbs are no exception,” said Rep. Quigley. “With so much to see, eat and tour in Chicago’s suburbs, it is crucial that we have affordable, accessible public transportation connecting the suburbs to each other and the City – and Pace provides just that.

Elmhurst College preparing for annual Recycling Extravaganza Household items ranging from electronics to eyeglasses will be taken for reuse or recycling ELMHURST – On Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Elmhurst College will host its annual Recycling Extravaganza, where people can bring a variety of household items that will be recycled, repurposed and kept out of landfills.

The Recycling Extravaganza is free and open to anyone bringing householdgenerated electronic waste and other items. In addition to an electronics recycler, several nonprofit social service and green-focused organizations will be on hand to take donations of a wide variety of items, including usable building supplies, clothing, bicycles,

carpeting, books, eyeglasses, household items, appliances and much more. This year, televisions will not be accepted for recycling, although most other kinds of electronics, including computers and computer monitors, will. A complete list of acceptable items is available at elmhurst.edu/sustainability. Paper shredding will be available, but will be limited to two boxes or bags.

The Recycling Extravaganza will be held in Alexander Street parking lot on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Two indicted in armed robbery of Elmhurst gas station, suburban ATMs

According to a release issued by the office of the U.S. Attorney, two men have been indicted for the armed robbery of a gas station in Elmhurst, as well as a series of armed robberies, which took place at various automatic teller machines (ATMs) throughout the western suburbs in 2015.

On Wednesday, March 30, a federal grand jury indicted Ken-

neth Hayes, 21, of Carpentersville, and Antonio Dunner, 22, of Elgin, on charges of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by threats or violence; five counts of interfering with commerce by threats of violence; and, two counts of carrying, using or brandishing a firearm in connection with a crime of violence.

The indictment also accuses Hayes and Dunner of robbing an Elmhurst gas station at gunpoint

on Nov. 1.

The U.S. Attorney reported that the two men hide in locations near ATMs, watch for potential victims to use the cash machine, then come out and commit the ATM robberies. The indictment said Hayes and Dunner often wore disguises and reportedly verbally threatened their victims while stealing not only their cash but also their cell phones, so the police could not be called.

If convicted, the conspiracy charge and each count of the interference of commerce charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison. The first count of the firearm charge carries a mandatory minimum of seven years, and the second count carries a mandatory minimum of 25 years.

The public is reminded that an indictment contains only charges and is not proof of a defendant’s guilt.

A stop at Elmhurst Hospital While at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Rep. Quigley inspected a Ride DuPage mini bus. Ride DuPage is a countywide paratransit program created in partnership by Pace, DuPage County and several units of local government.

The program now stands as a model of success for other counties.

“I am glad to have Congressman Quigley come by with Pace executives to learn about the vital role PACE plays in providing accessibility of healthcare to patients and employees of Elmhurst Hospital,” said Diane McGinnis, Elmhurst Hospital Community and Government Relations. “The unique relationship between Route 301, Elmhurst Hospital, and the surrounding community as a whole is something I hope will continue and grow in the future.”

ADDISON — Students are ready to get fit, then douse themselves in color!

The students of the St. Philip the Apostle School will walk, jog, and run their way toward a healthier life while raising funds for a student at the school. The school is introducing a program called My School Color Run. The MY School Color Run program aims to go beyond traditional fundraising. Rather than sell goods, this program aims to engage the entire student body in a fitness initiative that aims to instill a life-long healthy way of living.

Sophia is a first grader at the St. Philip the Apostle School and is battling Aplastic Anemia. She was unable to find a match for a much-needed bone marrow transplant and is currently enrolled in a clinical study in Maryland.

All proceeds from this event will go to Sophia’s family to help the expenses during this time. We encourage all who cannot attend to consider making a donation.

The Color Run will be held on Saturday, May 21, at the St. Philip the Apostle School and will be open to the public. This is an untimed fun run. Racers will pass through several color stations throughout the course and end with a color toss.

According to a release from DuPage County and the Metropolitan Planning Council, County Board Chairman Dan Cronin joined other representatives of the Transform Illinois Coalition in Springfield on Wednesday, April 6 to discuss their support of proposed legislation, which would limit the size, scope and cost of local government if passed.

Joining the meeting was a bi-partisan group of legislators who have sponsored 22 bills to create more opportunity for efficiency. The legislation, supported

by Transform Illinois, would 1) provide new tools to local governments to improve efficiency; 2) empower voters to make decisions; and, 3) increase transparency and accountability.

“Illinois has more units of government than any other state in the nation and the second-highest property tax rate,” said Cronin. “Many of these units were created in our parents’ or grandparents’ time and need to be reviewed, reformed or reduced. We salute lawmakers who take on this issue with an eye toward a modern, streamlined system of local government which provides both service and value for taxpayers.”

MarySue Barrett, president of the Metropolitan Planning Council, said she knew there were no “one-size-fits-all” solutions.

“The 22 bills lawmakers have proposed would increase transparency and accountability at the local level,” she said, “encourage and enable local government officials to consider new structures, and empower voters to streamline

local governments that are no longer serving their purpose.”

Alden Loury, senior policy analyst for the Better Government Association, attended the summit.

AT takes part in Sustainable Design Challenge

ADDISON — On April 5, Addison Trail students participated in the 10th Annual Sustainable Design Challenge at DuPage County’s Administration Building in Wheaton.

The event is coordinated

by School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) and is sponsored by DuPage County to encourage local schools to explore sustainability topics with students. More than 40 student groups from high schools throughout the County presented models of their designs to the public, County Board members, local professionals and county and municipal staff.

It’s like that for us city dwellers. Living in the urban jungle that we call downtown Elmhurst means sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets even.

Either way, you’re left licking your wounds and having claw soup for dinner.

Speaking of dinner, that’s one of the great things about living downtown: when you’re hungry, and even

Columnist when you’re not, you’re never more than a fork-throw away from a place to eat.

And unlike grabbing a bite in your own kitchen, a restaurant meal usually doesn’t end with a food fight.

Usually.

Plus, eating out means your own place doesn’t get the cooking smells. Of course, you can’t do anything about your neighbor who insists on fermenting cabbage in her

spare time. That odor creeps up on you like a stalker out on bail.

But there’s no sense arguing with that neighbor about her kimchi. She’ll just make more, and now she’ll be angry. I don’t know about you, but I need an angry neighbor like Quasimodo needed a backpack.

So you put your temper on Airplane Mode, you set your exhaust fan all the way up to 11, and you go out hunting for food.

At dawn, the street looks like it had been left out all night. You can stroll to your favorite coffee shop and order a bottomless cup to go. Or if your appetite’s more serious, there are plenty of places where you can sit down and

stuff yourself silly, like a bank that’s too big to fail.

After breakfast, you can get your exercise pushing yourself away from the table, or you can head out to one of the downtown’s numerous fitness centers. Sure, some folks think exercising is as useless as a tailor in a nudist colony, but others see it differently.

At any rate, after you’ve scoped out a few alleys and tried to figure out what happened to last night, it’s time for lunch.

Now here’s where you can get a little confused, like a bird that flies into your picture window. Some downtown restaurants are open for breakfast and lunch, but not dinner; some are open

for lunch and dinner, but not breakfast; some are closed from November to March; and the most exclusive ones are never open.

That’s a lot of info. You think it’s easy to pick up?

That’s what Bill Buckner thought.

Well, eventually you eat your way through downtown and stagger home, where you are nose-slapped with Essence of Boiled Cabbage from next door, and the whole cycle begins again.

Ah well, what can you do? Practice tying your shoes, play darts in the dark, try to get some shut-eye, and remember: living in downtown Elmhurst means never having to say you’re hungry.

Sports Headlock Wrestling’s Matthews wins state title

Addison Trail boys volleyball team victorious

Seven wrestlers from the Headlock Wrestling Academy, which is the kids feeder program for Addison Trail High School, recently competed in the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation novice and senior state championships.

The Novice Division is for 10-12-year-old wrestlers, while the Senior Division is for 12-14-year-old wrestlers.

Wrestlers qualified through both regional and sectional tournaments to advance to state.

At the state meet, Jake Matthews won the state title in the 108-pound Novice Division. Nick Skamra took fifth place in the 177-pound Senior Division, while John Asiuras took eighth place in the 74-pound Senior Division.

Other state qualifiers included Caden Votruba in the 115-pound Novice Division, Gavin Ranquist in the 79-pound Senior Division, Jonathan Chaidez in the 84-pound Senior Division and Xavier Sierra in the 156-pound Senior Division.

The team is coached by Headlock Wrestling Academy owner Sam Geraci.

The Independent will have more on this in next week’s paper.

Addison Trail boys volleyball The Addison Trail boys volleyball team recorded a recent 25-22, 10-25, 25-23 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory over Hinsdale South.

Mikey Strycharz had 15 kills and two aces. Jacob Grygo had 15 assists and six kills. Colton Noel had five kills. David Zielinski added nine digs and 14 assists, while Arlind Rojba had 18 digs.

The win moved Addison Trail to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in WSC Gold play.

Strong pitching aiding Willowbrook baseball team in early going Warriors tackle tough early-season schedule

Right out of the gates, the Willowbrook baseball team has encountered numerous quality opponents.

The Warriors were 2-4 through their first six non-conference games. Willowbrook defeated Naperville North and Maine West and lost to Glenbard South, Glenbard East, Batavia and Oak Park-River Forest.

“Oak Park is the best team I’ve seen in my time coaching,” said Willowbrook coach Vic Wisner. “We were up on them 5-4 in the sixth inning. They are a really good team that is very well-coached. Batavia is ranked No. 10 (by one suburban daily newspaper) and we were up on them 1-0 in the sixth inning.”

Willowbrook lost 3-1 to Batavia and also dropped a 3-2 game to Glenbard

East.

“Last year we won nine one-run games,” said Wisner. “This year a little luck is falling on the other side.”

Still, Wisner is seeing plenty of things he likes in the early going.

“We are able to manufacture runs,” he said. “We’re swinging the bats well.

Oak Park had a kid throwing that had given up one hit all year. We had seven or eight hits against him. We were putting together really good at-bats. Our thing is we haven’t been able to hold on in these low-scoring games.”

Wisner enjoys playing tough teams at the start of the season.

“The way we look at it, playing this many top teams right away toughens us up and gets us ready for the conference season and the postseason,” he said. “We have faced some top-line pitching. It’s only going to help us down the road.”

Willowbrook also has benefitted from strong pitching. “Pitching was going to be a strong point for us,” he said. “We’ve had some real good

pitching so far. Our thing is we’re not getting that timely hit. We’re getting seven, eight and nine hits a game, but instead of scoring three runs in an inning, we’re scoring one. It happens.

We’ll get those timely hits. We hit the ball and have great at-bats and go deep into counts. The hits are going to fall because we are getting good swings.”

On the mound, Cam Zunkel has been a standout, as has Matt Pizur.

“Cam has looked great on the mound and in the field,” said Wisner. “He’s a returning all-conference player. Matt Pizur has pitched well for us and has hit very well.”

TJ Geritano also has played well thus far. “TJ has had a strong two weeks for us,” said Wisner.

Willowbrook is scheduled to host Hinsdale Central today and will face Morton on the road Saturday in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division doubleheader. The following weekend the Warriors start an important league series with preseason conference favorite Hinsdale South.

Numerous Fenton softball players were off to hot starts at the plate through the team’s first nine games.

Alex Stoklosa was leading the team with a .429 batting average. Diana Pikul was hitting .409, while Rose Riley was batting .389.

“Alex has stood out so far this season,” said Fenton coach Dave Mello.

“It’s great to see her leading the team in both average and on-base percentage.

She has done most of her damage with two strikes.”

Riley was leading the team with nine RBI, while Ellie Wassmann, Jenna Geraci and Pikul each had five RBI. “Our best attribute at the plate so far this season is that each and every batter is battling regardless of the score,” said Mello. “We’ve had some of our best at-

bats late in the game.”

Freshman Payton Pugliese leads the team’s pitching staff in ERA. “Our pitchers are focusing on throwing strikes early in the count and getting ahead of hitters,” said Mello. “We are falling behind in the count too often and that is leading to way too many walks.”

Riley has been a standout as well in the field. “Rose has made two diving catches as well as a couple other really nice plays,” said Mello. “She is very quick to get the ball back into the infield when it is hit to her. We are still making too many errors, but have really shown a lot of promise in practice. The girls have been making some nice defensive plays.”

Over spring break, Fenton competed in the Southern Warrior Classic in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Fenton played Independence (Tenn.), White House Heritage (Tenn.), Stewart’s Creel (Tenn.) and Lancaster (Ohio). Timothy also dropped a recent 10-0 decision to Chicago Resurrection.

“We have played some good teams in Illinois and then ran into some very good teams in Tennessee,” said Mello.

“The trip to Tennessee was a lot of fun because it gave everyone the chance to experience out-of-state competition and then enjoy time together off the field. We were able to conclude the trip with a nice team night of dinner and sight-seeing in Nashville.”

Mello noted after the team returned from the trip, it endured a stretch of five games being cancelled by weather in a six-game span.

Mello added the cancellations have brought about a two-week practice period. “We only had two weeks of practice at the beginning of the season before our first game so this will be like a new start to the season,” he said.

“I am excited to see how we do when Mother Nature allows us to play again.”

Fenton had games scheduled this week with Illiana Christian, St. Edward, Fenwick, IC Catholic Prep (today in Elmhurst) and Addison Trail (at home Friday).

The Addison Trail boys tennis team has some strong experience to lean on this season.

The Blazers return No. 1 singles player Alex Franco. The senior earned all-West Suburban Conference Gold Division honors after placing second in the league at No. 1 singles.

Also back are juniors Nico Favuzzi (No. 2 singles) and Josh Sapnu (No. 1 doubles).

Favuzzi and Sapnu played No. 1 doubles together last year.

Addison Trail placed fifth in the WSC Gold last year and opened up the 2016 season with a 6-1 non-conference loss to Timothy Christian.

“This year we are hoping to improve our conference place from fifth to fourth or third,” said Addison Trail coach Justin Hegner. “We have been working hard at not just being good tennis players physically, but mentally as well. We have worked at making smart shots instead of just hitting the ball hard. In doubles we are working on position just as much as working on our shots. So far the players have been responding well to this.”

Despite the loss to Timothy, Hegner had positive takeaways.

“In our first match we had some close matches that we ended up

Willowbrook boys tennis The Willowbrook boys tennis team is coming off a 2015 season where it went 9-7 in dual matches and took third in the WSC Gold Division.

The Warriors lost nine of 11 starters from a year ago (all seniors).

“This year we are reloading on talent,” said Willowbrook coach Ed DeLaCruz.

Willowbrook split its first two dual matches. The Warriors defeated Riverside-Brookfield 6-1 and lost to Glenbard East 6-1.

“The weather has been an issue to start the season as many matches have needed to be made up,” said DeLaCruz.

DeLaCruz does return two key starters in seniors Khateeb Raza (No. 1 singles) and Mike Sommers (No. 2 singles). Raza

was an all-WSC Gold Division selection last year.

DeLaCruz is excited about the program’s freshman class.

“This is the best incoming freshman class I’ve had in seven years at Willowbrook,” he said.

Freshman Drake DelValle (No. 2 doubles) and Mark Lobdell (No. 3 doubles) are varsity starters. Sophomores Abdullah Kaludi (No. 3 singles) and Raiq Siddiq (No. 2 doubles) also are contributors. “They are two very good sophomores,” said DeLaCruz.

The coach does not label this season as a rebuilding one.

“I don’t want to say this is a rebuilding year because we will be very competitive in match play throughout the season,” he said. “The future does look bright to take the program to another level. Singles will be a key to our success this year because in doubles we have some younger players trying to get experience under their belt.”

Willowbrook softball team off to strong start Conforti wins first three pitching decisions

The Willowbrook softball team was off to a 3-1 start through its first four games of the season.

The Warriors lost a nonconference game to Plainfield Central and then swept a doubleheader from West Chicago.

Willowbrook also recorded a non-conference win over Riverside-Brookfield.

Pitcher Sabrina Conforti was 3-0 through the first four games and had 12 strikeouts in 21

innings of work.

“Sabrina is forcing hitters to get the ball in play and is getting outs,” said Willowbrook coach Rachel Karos.

Willowbrook also is making things happen at the plate.

“We’re putting the ball in play and are forcing teams to play defense,” said Karos. “We have continued to get stronger at the plate with each game.”

Defense is something the Warriors are hard at work improving upon. “We are young so we are making a couple errors per game right now,” said Karos. “We are going to have to get better defensively, but we have seen improvement in this area with each game.”

Sophomore Katie Smith was leading the team in batting

average through the first four games.

“Katie is improving defensively each game and is leading the team in batting average,” said Karos.

Senior Kaylin Schuda was cited for strong leadership.

“Kaylin is hitting the ball hard, but more importantly is showing her leadership.”

Junior Veronica Swan had a game-winning single in one of the West Chicago games.

“We’ve had several instances of clutch hitting from Veronica,” said Karos.

At the plate, Smith was 6-for11 with four RBI through the team’s first four games. Brianna Richardson was 6-for-15 with two doubles and six runs scored. Schuda was 6-for-14

with five runs scored and four RBI. Alexa Henderson was 5-for11, while Swan, Emily King (1 home run) and Megan Talan each had three hits. Meghan Koterba had one home run and four RBI. Willowbrook is scheduled to travel to Wheeling Thursday for a non-conference game.

The Warriors host Morton in a West Suburban Conference Gold Division game Friday and host Reavis in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday.

“I’ve been really happy with the amount of improvement we’ve had in such a short period of time,” said Karos. “We are young, but we continue to play with more confidence each game.”

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team making progress

The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team has relied on a mix of experience and youth to achieve successes in the early part of the season.

The Knights started the season with a 2-1-1 mark, scoring wins over T-F United (3-0) and Regina (3-1). IC Catholic Prep dropped a 3-0 decision to Lincoln-Way East and went to a 2-2 stalemate with Argo.

Through the first four games, Grace Fuller and freshman Olivia Hurt each had scored two goals, while Tessa Langan was the team leader in assists with three.

“So far I’ve really liked our possession in most of the games,” said IC Catholic Prep interim coach Tom Schergen, who also is the school’s athletic director.

“In most of the games we’ve controlled possession. One of the issues we’ve had is finishing. We were 0-0 with five minutes left against Lincoln-Way East and we ran out of gas and couldn’t finish. We have some youth up top and they are working on consistently finishing.

We’re putting it together. We think we can compete with just about anybody.”

Schergen noted the Knights have 18 underclassmen on the roster and only four seniors.

“We are young,” he said. “But there is definitely promising talent here. Our junior class is very strong and we have a pretty strong freshman class. We start two freshmen and a third comes off the bench. Our goal as always is to compete during the season and get ourselves

ready for the Class 1A state playoffs at the end of the year.”

The Knights are receiving key contributions from a host of players including the likes of Langan, a junior midfielder, and sophomore forward-midfielder Grace Fuller, along with junior defender Tess Reardon, a threesport athlete at the school.

“Grace got hurt halfway through last year,” said Schergen. “She was having a very good freshman year and then had a stress fracture. She’s come back very strong this year. Tess Reardon is a three-sport athlete who is a very smart player.”

Also back after being slowed by injury is junior defender Kaitlin Grady, who Schergen noted combines with Reardon to create a formidable central defensive pairing.

“Olivia is a good club player and has come in here hitting the ground running for us,” said Schergen.

Sophomore Rochelle Spizzirri is the Knight’s goalkeeper. “She played two games in goal last year,” said Schergen.

“She’s relatively inexperienced, but her first game of the year she earned a shutout for us. Rochelle has made some big saves for us and every game she gets more comfortable and more accustomed to the position.”

Schergen also lauded the contributions of senior midfielders Emma Hendricks and Maeve Gillette. “Both of them have stepped up for us,” said Schergen. “Emma is a super-utility

player. She’s played almost every position on the field. She plays all-around depending on the situation.”

Schergen likes the fact he can rely on so many players up and down his roster. “That’s what I’m very happy with,” he said.

“Sometimes you might have to try and hide a weak spot on the field. We feel with our 11 starting players out there, we have a strong lineup and compete with teams.”

Schergen also has been happy with how quickly the team has meshed, given players such as Fuller and Grady were not with the team for full stretches last season.

“One of my worries was

how fast we would gel,” he said. “With Grace and Kaitlyn coming back and the freshmen playing a big part, I’ve been extremely impressed with how fast the girls have started to put things together.”

Schergen has stepped into the head coaching position in place of Tod Privett, who is taking the year off to watch his son and daughter play their spring seasons of boys volleyball and girls soccer respectively at York. Schergen has extensive high-school soccer coaching experience from his time at Bremen, Mt. Carmel and Marist. He enjoyed headcoaching stints at Bremen and Mt. Carmel.

The Don of A New Day in Sports David beats Goliath again I hope some of you got to see the NCAA basketball championship game between Villanova and North Carolina. With no time remaining on the clock, on a perfect pass from MVP Ryan Arcidaccono, Kris Jenkins made a 3-point shot to win the game for Villanova 77-74. Villanova is a small private school in Philadelphia and North Carolina is a large state school.

The lesson we learned here is to never give up, even if you are the underdog. Let’s hope our Chicago Bulls can make the playoffs.
