In response to this growing scourge, the Villages of Bensenville/Wood Dale held a community education forum, on April 11, in the Community Room at Fenton High School 1000 W. Green Street, Bensenville.

DuPage County Coroner Dr. Richard Jorgensen, a former trauma surgeon for more than 20 years, took office in late 2012 and quickly became alarmed at the number of heroin-related deaths.

There were 98 such deaths in 2017 which is the same number reported in 2016; and is close to double the 51 reported in 2015, with victims ranging in age from their 20s through their 60s.

“The numbers are startling and show that we continue to have a serious problem of addiction and death related to legal and illegal opioids,” Dr. Jorgensen recently told the Daily Herald. He is on a mission to spread the word that this epidemic spans all ages, all races and all socio-economic backgrounds.

County expands response to opioid crisis; forms HOPE Task Force

In an ongoing effort to combat what has become the deadliest drug crisis in U.S. history, DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin has created the Heroin/Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Task Force.

A joint operation of the DuPage County Board and the DuPage County Health Department, the Task Force includes representatives from several agencies across the County.

The HOPE Taskforce is co-led by Board of Health Vice President Dr. Lanny Wilson and County Board member Grant Eckhoff, and includes 17 community specialists in mental health, law enforcement, the court system, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and education.

“This is a challenging epidemic that requires a wide-ranging response, and the HOPE Task Force is the next logical step,” Eckhoff said.

The HOPE Taskforce has developed a framework to: • Reduce access to drugs • Reduce opioid use and misuse • Increase overdose response • Integrate mental health and substance use disorder treatment and recovery • Provide education and prevention, and reduce stigma “Our intent is to bring together the collective wisdom and resources in DuPage County to attack this epidemic from every possible angle,” Dr. Wilson said.

Members of the HOPE Taskforce are meeting monthly to professionally and comprehensively assess opioid use in DuPage County, and recommend effective and actionable policies, initiatives and programs. The Taskforce will issue formal recommendations lat-

er this spring.

The HOPE Task Force has met with congressional leaders to discuss the framework and share the Taskforce’s recommendations to address the crisis, most recently meeting with U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Schaumburg) and Peter Roskam (R-Wheaton), to discuss the local response to this epidemic.

Additionally, DuPage County officials have taken steps to fight heroin and opioid overdoses since introducing the DuPage Narcan Program (DNP) in 2014, including: Saving more than 460 lives using the antidote Naloxone (also known as Narcan) to reverse the effects of heroin and opioids • Training more than 4,000 first responders and citizens in the use of naloxone; • Decreasing access to prescription drugs by increasing access to safe drug disposal through the Rx Box, the county-wide drug disposal program, which has collecting over 46 tons of unused medication; • Leading community and school discussions and education efforts to create awareness among community leaders, students and parents; Promoting opioid overdose prevention resources, including the Illinois Helpline for Opioid and Other Substances (1-833-2FIND HELP), and; • Providing safe-prescribing education to healthcare professionals.

HOPE Task Force meetings are open to the public and interested members of the community are invited to attend. All HOPE Task Force meetings will be announced on the DuPage County Board and DuPage County Health Department websites.

Bensenville Edge Ice Arena hosts 7th annual Law Enforcement Hockey Classic On Saturday, March 3, members of the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago FBI faced off in the 7th annual Honor Flight Chicago Law Enforcement Hockey Classic.

Honor Flight Chicago is a not-forprofit organization that is committed to honoring Chicagoland veteran’s by flying them to Washington D.C. for a day of honor at no cost to them. Each flight costs approximately $120,000 and is funded entirely by private donations. 7,436 Word War II and Korean War veterans have already made their flight to Washington D.C. There are approximately 15,000 more awaiting the opportunity.

Bensenville Village President, Frank DeSimone, kicked off the event by welcoming the crowd to the game along with news anchor Rob Johnson and actor David Eigenberg from the hit TV show, Chicago Fire. “What Honor Flight Chicago is providing for our veterans is truly humbling. Our community has the utmost respect for those who have served our country and we are honored to have the opportunity to host this event right here in Bensenville,” DeSimone said.

The fundraiser featured members from the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago FBI and included numerous raffles and silent auctions.

A few special guests included David Eigenberg, D.B. Sweeney, Daniel Carcillo, Gina Glocksen, Rob Johnson and Brent Sopel.

The Event is one of Honor Flight Chicago’s largest fundraising opportunities. The funds generated from this event will help sponsor an entire flight of World War II and Korean War Veterans to fly to Washington DC. The fundraiser also payed tribute to Chicago Police Commander Paul Bauer, who was killed in the line of duty this past February.

Village of Bensenville launches Senior/ Disabled Grass Cutting Program Beginning the week of April 9, the Village of Bensenville will offer a discounted grass cutting program to its senior and disabled residents. In mid-March, letters were mailed to incorporated senior and disabled residents to inform them of the guidelines of the program and directions on how to enroll.

Village President, Frank DeSimone, is proud to roll out this program which provides Bensenville seniors and disabled residents grass cutting services for their home at a discounted rate.

DeSimone shared his excitement about the new program by saying, “Offering a grass cutting program for Bensenville senior and disabled residents is something I have wanted for a long time. I believe this program will provide our senior and disabled residents with a much needed service at an affordable price.”

The Village will hire independent contractors to provide discounted rates for common grass cutting services. The Village will also subsidize fifty percent (50%) of the cost.

The cost of the standard service plan for residents is $7.50 per cut. The standard plan includes grass cutting on a weekly basis, blowing of excess grass clippings, a spring cleanup in the first week of service and bagging of clippings in the month of October.

Add on services include edging of hardscape for $2.50 per cut as well as bagging and disposal of clippings for $2.50 per cut. Edging and bagging services must be chosen for the full season.

Services will begin the week of April 9 and continue through October 31.

Applicants must own the property and provide a copy of a recent property tax bill, residents must be 65 and older or disabled/ handicapped with no one else in the household that can cut the grass and must demonstrate a combined income of $55,000.00 or less to participate in the program.

Last week, Renee Kearley, 49, of the 300 block of East Yorkfield Avenue in Elmhurst, was deemed unfit to stand trial by DuPage County Judge John Kinsella for an incident that allegedly took place in 2015.

Kearley stands accused of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child younger than 13 years and aggravated criminal sexual abuse stemming from alleged offenses that took place on or about 12 noon of July 1, 2015,

according to reports.

Court documents indicate that doctors had been consulted about whether or not Kearley was able to stand trial since the time of her arrest.

Judge denies attorney’s motion to withdraw from case Kearley’s attorney, Jim Ryan, had filed a motion on Feb. 8 asking to withdraw from the case, claiming the defendant had “continually refused to cooperate with counsel and to assist with her own defense,” court records said. Ryan alleged that Kearley had refused to discuss not only the facts and allegations of her case, but also the possible outcome of her sentencing. She would not leave her

cell at DuPage County Jail to discuss her case with him, nor to discuss her fitness to stand trial. According to reports, Kinsella denied the motions.

Husband convicted of detaining a witness On Aug. 2, 2016, Renee’s husband Michael Kearley, 53, of the same address, was charged with bribery, unlawful communication with a witness and harassment of a witness for allegations that he was attempting to prevent someone from testifying against his wife. On June 6, 2017, he was found guilty of a misdemeanor attempt to communicate with or detain a witness.

Renee Kearley’s next court date is set for May 22.

Synthetic cannabinoid products linked to deaths

The DuPage County Health Department is providing this health alert to the community. Use of a synthetic cannabinoid has been linked to an outbreak with life-threatening reactions in Northeastern Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports 89 cases with two deaths following the use of synthetic cannabinoid products.

Although individuals report obtaining synthetic cannabinoid products in the Chicagoland area, contaminated products could be in counties across the state. Affected persons have reported obtaining cannabinoid products from convenience stores, dealers, and friends.

If you or someone you know purchased any of this product in the past month, do not use it. If you have used any of these products, and start experiencing unexplained bleeding or bruising, please have someone take you to the hospital immediately or call 911. Do not walk or drive yourself.

Patients should share with medical personnel what and when they used so that they can be treated quickly and effectively. Anyone with concerns about unusual bleeding should contact their health care provider and let them know if they have used synthetic cannabinoids.

Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made, mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on dried, shredded plant material so they can be smoked, and sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices. They are sold for recreational drug use claiming to provide the user the effects of cannabis. These products may be known as herbal or liquid incense and have brand names such as K2, Spice, Black Mamba, Bombay Blue, Genie, and Zohai, but may be packaged under other brand names.

ATHS ‘Big Fish’ production heads to State Festival This past January, seven Addison Trail students were selected to participate in the 2018 Illinois High School Theatre Festival (IHSTF) All-State production of “Big Fish.”

That show has now earned the honor of being accepted to perform during the International Thespian Festival (ITF), which will take place in June at University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

This is the first time an Illinois AllState production has been selected for this event, and the group is seek-

ing donations to help with the travel expenses. The Addison Trail students and staff who will participate in the ITF include: Cast/Ensemble: Junior Connor White; Technical Crew: Senior Ethan Macaraeg; Orchestra Pit: Senior Nina Caliendo, junior Kristopher Kusnierz; Staff: Theatre Director Anna Louise Jakubka was named as one of two producers for the show, and Theatre Tech Assistant Alex Holod, a 2009 AT grad, was selected as Props Designer.

Students in Ms. Henry’s language arts and in Ms. Vasilakos’ social science classes at Indian Trail Junior High worked in groups to write and perform skits that were related to the journey and struggles that pioneers experienced on the Oregon Trail. The skits were performed recently for classmates.

This family of pioneers traveling along the Oregon Trail is concerned for their young child who became ill on their journey. This was one of the skits performed by the 7th graders at Indian Trail Junior High, who worked on an interdisciplinary project about the Oregon Trail.

Addison Trail boys volleyball team continues to play well

The Addison Trail boys volleyball team continued its torrid start to the season by winning the six-team round-robin Rolling Meadows invitational.

The Blazers opened play with a 2521, 25-17 win over Buffalo Grove and also downed host Rolling Meadows 22-25, 25-18, 15-9. Addison Trail defeated St. Viator 25-6, 25-15 and defeated Fremd 25-23, 26-24, as well as Bartlett 25-18, 25-21.

Addison Trail won the tournament

with a perfect 5-0 mark to improve to 12-2 overall.

In the tournament, Jacob Grygo had 82 assists, 40 kills and eight blocks.

David Zielinski had 31 kills, 16 assists and three aces. Justin Werdertich had 19 kills. John Baumgartner had 11 kills and six blocks. Joe Mosny had 11 kills and six blocks, while Mikey Strycharz had 12 kills, 15 digs and four aces. Bryan Florian had 24 digs.

Earlier, the Blazers opened West Suburban Conference Gold Division play with a 26-24, 25-23 win over District 88 neighbor Willowbrook.

Zielinski had 10 kills, 10 digs and one block. Strycharz had four kills, 12 digs and one ace. Werderitch had six kills and one block, while Grygo had 23 assists and four kills.

Addison Trail’s team high score as of earlier last week was a 118.9.

On the individual front, coach Mike Galfi lauded the work of freshman Matt Wojdak. “Matt has had many strong floor routines,” he said.

Wojdak recently took fifth on floor at the Rolling Meadows invitational.

His high floor routine score as of earlier last week was a 9.2. Jakub Sitko had the team’s high score on the parallel bars at 7.8.

Both the Willowbrook boys and girls track teams competed in the recent West Suburban Conference Gold Division meets.

On the boys’ side at Proviso West in Hillside, Lugi Davila took 10th in the 55 dash with a time of 7.17.

D’onte Gholston was sixth in the 200 with a time of 25.02. Pat Florey took fourth in the 400 with a time of 53.54. Alex Medina placed sixth in the 600 with a time of 1:31.73. Senior Michael Isaacson was third in the 800 with a time of 2:04.87.

Isaacson took seventh in the 1,600 with a time of 4:48.47, while Matt Caron was eighth in the event at 4:48.47. Caron took sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:26.83 and Ian Costello was 10th at 12:00.15.

William Stout was fifth in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.32. Anthony Jones came in eighth at 8.61.

Willowbrook was fourth in the 800 relay with a time of 1:41.61. The Warriors were third in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:46.85. Willowbrook took sixth in the 3,200 relay with a time of 9:40.92.

Gholston took fourth in the long jump at 20-2. Terell Regans was 10th at 18-4. Gholston was seventh in the triple jump 38-3, while Regans was eighth at 35-11 1/2.

Brandon Loth was second in the shot put at 47-2.

Frosh-soph meet highlights included sophomore Liam Riesen winning the 400 with a time of 53.27. Sophomore

Brandon Heselton was second in the 800 at 2:08.90, while freshman Tyler King was fifth at 2:10.71. King also logged a third-place finish in the 1,600 at 4:51.18, while Heselton was sixth in the event at 4:58.15.

Sophomore Sam Glass was third in the high jump at 5-4. Freshman Haven Pryor was fifth in the long jump at 180. Glass was third in the triple jump at 38-4, while freshman Thomas Florey was fourth at 35-8 3/4.

Braden took second in the 400 with a time of 1:02.60. Sophomore Gianna Irion was eighth at 1:12.78.

Junior Victoria Palma won the 1,600 with a time of 5:16.13, while senior Angela Klingelhoffer was ninth at 6:31.21. Senior Briana Jones was eighth in the 3,200 at 14:11.40.

Irion was third in the 55 hurdles with a time of 10.15.

Willowbrook was sixth in the 4-by160 relay with a time of 1:34.85. The Warriors were second in the 1,600 relay in 4:20.72.

Melissa Florey was ninth in the long jump at 14-2. Junior Teresa Zaldivar was eighth in the triple jump at 28-5 3/4, while junior Anna Carson was ninth at 28-4 3/4.

Freshman Natasha Daum was fifth in the high jump at 4-0. Burns was third in the long jump at 14-3.

Freshman Aniyah Rushing won the shot put at 30-0 1/2.

Willowbrook baseball The Willowbrook baseball team opened West Suburban Conference Gold Division play with a 5-0 loss against Hinsdale South in a game that marked the squad’s only competition last week due to foul weather conditions. Willowbrook fell to 4-4 with the loss.

The Warriors were limited to five hits. Sam Tumilty had two hits, while Jack Hines, Ryan Mintz and Jeremy Conforti each had one hit. John Taylor and Tumilty each stole a base. Mintz took the loss. Ethan Pieniazek and Vince Ruchala pitched in relief. The Warriors were slated to play the first two games of a conference series earlier this week against Morton and a makeup conference game against Hinsdale South.

Willowbrook is scheduled to conclude the conference series with Morton today at Morton West and will face Oak Park-River Forest in a WSC crossover game at 2 p.m. in Oak Park Saturday before facing Addison Trail in a three-game WSC Gold series next week.

In addition to Wojdak and Sitko, sophomore Caleb Michaliska also has been a key contributor. “Matt Wojdak started this year with strong tumbling abilities, but is growing on all other events,” said Galdi. “Jakub and Caleb are returning sophomores who are crucial scores on the varsity squad.”

Junior captain Eric Estrada is drawing rave reviews as well.

“Eric has taken a leadership position and works tremendously hard every day,” said Galfi. “He is starting to have major gains on rings and high bar.”

Galfi said the horizontal bar and pommel horse are works in progress.

“Like most teams in the state, high bar and pommel horse always are an area of focus for improvement,” he said. “Our younger gymnasts continue to work circles and giants in hopes of competing them this year. We have a very young team that has a lot of promise. They continue to grow each and every day in practice and work tremendously hard.”

Addison Trail girls soccer The Addison Trail girls soccer team is coming off a 2017 season where it

went 6-10-3 overall and 1-4 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action.

Back for the Blazers are senior Brisamar Garcia, who coach Sergio Nunez called a smart field player, as well as junior Evelyn Dominguez (“an adaptive midfielder,” Nunez said), senior Berenice Berumen (“A defender with a mission,” the coach noted) and senior Vanessa Ramirez who Nunez termed a power striker.

Key newcomers include sophomores Lucia Fullone and Demi Koulogeorgas (who Nunez termed a dominator). “Lucia has great ball skills and Demi is a great addition to our team,” said Nunez.

“We are a newer team with a newer start,” Nunez added. “I’m feeling the best ever as far as having a whole competitive team.”

Nunez said his team’s defense will be solid and the addition of starting freshman Valeria Soto will be key as well. “Valeria has confidence beyond her years,” said Nunez. “She is going to be a star.”

Nunez said the team’s goal is to “score plenty this year.”

“We’ve won games with low goals, but we want to win by larger margins as much as possible,” he said. “I have a few girls who have specialized in finishing. I can’t wait to see that. This team is tiny but mighty. They want to learn and improve as a team. That is awesome for any coach to have.”

The elite choral organization Spirito! Singers is currently accepting auditions for the 2018-19 season for the Ragazze and Bravura ensembles.

The Ragazze Ensemble includes girls in grades 5-8 and the Bravura Ensemble features young women in grades 9-12.

Singers are admitted at the beginning of each season, so this is the only time of year members can join one of the most coveted musical ensembles in the area.

Eclectic exhibit draws ATHS students to ACA gallery The exhibit “Open Symbolism” went out with fan-fare during the closing reception, when a group of Addison Trail High School 3-D art students led by Maria Ramon visited and met a few of the artists in gallery. Joe Eddy Brown and Bill Austin were on hand to answer the student’s questions that ranged from their inspiration and education to specific creation and selections of materials. This exhibit was of particular interest to the students who are studying art made of found objects.

“I take my art students to every exhibit in the gallery, but this one directly ties into our unit,” Ramon said.

“They previewed the show, prepared questions and then viewed the pieces again with the artists. It was an invaluable opportunity to connect what they are learning with real-world artists and ask questions about the artistic process. We are so grateful to have this rich resource in our community!”

The show highlighted the talents of artists Joe Eddy Brown, Gary Brown, Anton Witek, Bill Austin and Rena Church. The eclectic group of 5 relates their collaboration to a pentaprism — reflecting an array of ideas and light in constant deviation. The group’s varied styles and viewpoints are as diverse as the materials they use and the passions the work portrays.

As the group expresses, “we don’t paint the standard portrait, common landscape or a simple bowl of fruit.

We push boundaries and break new ground – taking things and putting them into a new context.”

The current exhibit, “Creative Insights” might also be of interest to students, faculty and parents. It is a juried collection of work from 28 local artists representing a myriad of medium and styles exploring the theme of

creative insights. The current work is on exhibit through April 27, with an artist reception on Friday, April 13 from 7 – 9 p.m.

The Addison Center for the Arts gallery is open Wednesday – Saturday from 1-4 p.m. and is located at 213 N. Lombard Road, Door #4, adjacent to Addison Trail High School, parking is available in the North lot. Special tours are available by calling 630548-4500.

Veeck made sure the hot dogs were hot and the beer was cold.”

In 1942, Veeck, along with former Cubs star and manager Charlie Grimm, bought the Triple-A Milwaukee Brewers. Veeck experimented with promotions including a contest to rename the ladies’ room.

The winner was “Hall of Fem” and game times, seeking to attract as many fans as possible. He also enlisted in the Marines, serving three years in an artillery unit (the same unit as Peoria native and Chicago Cubs announcer Jack Brickhouse) during World War II. Veeck’s leg was crushed by a recoiling artillery piece and his foot was amputated.

He would later have more than 30 surgeries on the leg and lived the rest of his life in constant pain.

Veeck sold his interest in the Milwaukee club and in 1946 purchased the Cleveland Indians.

With Doby in the Cleveland lineup, Veeck also signed legendary pitcher Satchel Paige of the Negro Leagues, making him the oldest rookie in baseball history. The Indians won the World Series in 1948. A year later, and in need of money to settle a divorce with his first wife, Veeck sold the Indians.

In 1951, Veeck bought the lowly St. Louis Browns. According to one tale, when a fan called the Browns’ offices to see what time that day’s game was supposed to start, Veeck responded, “What time can you make it?”

Some of Veeck’s greatest stunts took place in St. Louis. In August 1951, Eddie Gaedel, who stood 3 feet 7 inches and wore number 1/8, suited up for the Browns. The shortest man to ever play in the major leagues walked in his only plate appearance.

Veeck also turned game management over to the fans for a game, giving the crowd signs stating “Yes” and “No” when asked if the Browns should bunt, steal a base or play the infield in. The Browns beat Philadelphia 5-3 that day.

Money issues often prompted Veeck to sell his teams but rarely was he out of the game for long. After leaving St. Louis, he returned to Chicago, buying the White Sox in 1959. That year, the Sox made the World Series for the first time in 40 years, but lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Veeck would again sell his team.

One of Veeck’s best friends was Abe Saperstein, owner of the Harlem Globetrotters.

“They were two of a kind, promoters,” Dickson said. “At one point the two of them talked about buying a circus. It was a Chicago style— brash. If Veeck grew up somewhere else he’d be a different person. He grew up reading the Chicago writers, people from his father’s era, like Ring Lardner. It was a different kind of place than anywhere else.”

In 1976, Veeck purchased his last baseball team, the Chicago White Sox again. This was on the eve of player free agency when salaries headed north of $1 million for top stars. Veeck created a strategy to keep the Sox competitive: rent-aplayer, in which he would bring in a player in the last year of his contract with no intention of signing him after the season.

“It solidified him as to who he was,” Dickson said of rent-a-player.

“He relished this opportunity.”

By 1981, Veeck could no longer complete with baseball’s new financial structure and sold the team. He left the game but his legacy continues and can be seen in every majorand minor-league ballpark, from the promotions to the scoreboards. He also had an influence on race and integration of the game.

“Veeck opened the park for kids, women and families,” Dickson said.

“He knew the game was constantly facing challenges and he knew he had to keep a step ahead. He realized the total package of well-contained insanity. While it didn’t always work, consider Disco Demolition (when the White Sox had to forfeit a game because fans destroyed the field), he had a major impact on the game.”

Fenton boys track team performs well at indoor conference meet Bison girls badminton team showing positive growth

Fenton boys track and field coach Clint Porter has seen a ton of progress from his distance runners thus far.

“The strength of our team (is) our distance guys so far,” he said.

At the recent 13-team Metro Suburban Conference indoor championships, Jeremy Lodewyck won the 3,200 run with a time of 10:45.47 and Rany Almarales was second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:01.52.

Michael Lieggi was third in the 800 at 2:12.52. Cristian Sanchez took fourth in the 3,200 at 10:58.30 and the Fenton 3,200 relay team was third.

“We do have some young new guys who will perform well as they develop,” said Porter.

One individual making key strides is junior Jimmy Deckert. “Jimmy is looking to improve in the discus outside,” said Porter. “As a junior he appears to be on pace to be one of our best throwers in years and we have had some of our best efforts from this segment under the tutelage of throws coach Lee Cassidy.”

Porter said the makeup of this year’s squad has made for an enjoyable atmosphere. “As for our team, they are a very nice group of young men to coach,” he said. “They have fun in practice, compete well and are supportive of one another. Quite honestly, they are a pleasure to be around and the coaching staff feels strongly about our team’s chemistry.”

Porter added the team has its sights set on getting athletes to the state meet. “We are in the middle of

the pack when it comes to the MSC and we’re hopeful that some of our guys will have a shot at qualifying for state,” he said.

Fenton girls badminton Fenton girls badminton coach Brian Hastings has seen his 2018 team take many positive steps a monthplus into the season.

“The girls have competed at their best level thus far despite normally being outmatched in terms of experience,” he said.

Fenton has a dual-meet win against Elgin Larkin to its credit and split its matches with Morton.

“We are looking forward to continuing to improve and work on our skills and competitive levels,” said Hastings.

Jeniffer Reyes has three wins at No. 1 singles, while Galilea Rivera has a pair of wins at No. 2 singles.

Joanna Toledo and Fiza Anwar have two wins at No. 2 doubles.

Hastings added the team also has no shortage of leaders. “Galilea, Sammen Naseer and Jeniffer Reyes have done tremendous jobs as leaders and many of the girls have progressed very well throughout the season despite often playing at higher levels,” he said.

Fenton’s returning players from last year include Reyes, Rivera, Naseer, Toledo, Monse Valois, Anwar, Monse Estrada and Olivia Dworak.

“We expect Jeniffer and Galilea to accept the challenge of being our leaders and thus far they have done an outstanding job,” said Hastings earlier this season. “Jeniffer, Galilea, Sammen, Monse and Olivia return with varsity experience and we hope all the girls continue to improve as the year progresses. Overall, we are quite young and inexperienced so it will be interesting to witness their progression and the way in which they respond to challenges. The returning players are great girls who love to challenge themselves and love the sport of badminton.”

IC Catholic Prep softball team off to 9-0 start

IC Catholic Prep softball coach Frank Reaber said his team has been playing “pretty well.”

In the case of the Knights, “pretty well” must be code for “outstanding.” IC Catholic Prep was off to a perfect 9-0 start to the season thanks in part to a 6-0 showing during spring break in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

The Knights also hold wins over Proviso East, Timothy Christian and St. Francis. “St. Francis was a big win for us,” said Reaber.

Reaber said the competition in Florida “wasn’t bad.” “It’s hard to tell about the teams. I judge by the size of the schools and all the

schools we played were bigger than us,” he added. “We hit well in Florida, which is a big deal, and we are playing pretty good defense. Our base running still could improve, but it’s mostly been our hitting.

We’re putting up eight, nine and 10 runs a game. It’s hard to lose that way. Florida was a real good boost for us. We played in nice weather and had six games in four days. It was good for them. And then we get home and have this bad weather and games will be rescheduled for later in the year when we’ll start playing back-to-back-to-back. But it’s the same for everybody.”

Reaber also has been pleased with the team’s pitching. “Our pitching is good,” he said.
